I may be the only person in the world headcanoning the hero, the hero's wife, Harry, and Maria as a polycule.
I am God's silliest soldier.
Her most tortured artist.
Her fattest ass-haver.
Unfortunately for the populous, I will be continuing my goofy ways. God loves my silly ideas and frankly absurd body.

Like I said, an obvious sign telling me it's a mimic didn't stop me from thinking "but what if it isn't?" I love Frieren for the after the journey story and all but mostly because I kinda am Frieren. Fun idea for D&D nerds btw, one thing that never got translated over into most RPGs is that old-school mimics were capable of speech. Anyways, figured out how to get pics from the game's snapshot mode over to here. I like games including the ability to take pics more.
Ahead is my favorite from the main story quest, and it's big spoilers for DQ Builders 2. So like...be warned:
Tumblr media
Someone familiar with the game might recognize and anachronism here, I shouldn't have Malroth for this part. My bro, it's something a lot of people didn't like about the story and I didn't either. There's a traitor in Moonbrooke's midst, and he turns the people against your bro. Meaning our bro Malroth gets thrown in jail and blames you. Causes a rift that sets up the grand finale. I was pissed honestly. Like...you expect me to want to sit around and build for these shitheads after that? It's a black game, the game kinda forces you to feel like a bad friend because I was ready to tell Moonbrooke to go fuck itself. No seriously, I actually did commemorate the moment:
Tumblr media
Yeah I just sat on the tower and made them defend their own damn castle for any of the battles. Talk about good Dragon Quest design. It's like what I said about the late-stage boss fight in DQ5. Furrowfield makes you feel the threat of dudes attacking your base. Those skeletons will make you have to rebuild a bit. Progressively past that it becomes less of a threat. Sorta frontloads the fear a Minecraft creeper strikes in you. Anyways, us flying over the field. I stumbled into that early. It did nothing to diminish the impact of one of the coolest moments in the game. Especially for an older fan of DQ2.
That's Rendarak in this game, or Rhone as I'm used to it. Moonbrooke is the snowy winter land this time. Rhone is a peaceful valley tucked away in the mountains. And even the main hero of the mainline counterpart's home of Midenhall is there. This is where you should get the reveal the world is all an illusion. Smartly using an iconic moment from Dragon Quest 2 that really holds up even today. When you finally get to Hargon's Castle in that...it looks like Midenhall. Home. You can stay at an inn or buy stuff at shops but when you leave it resets your stats and inventory. Cool trick right? Though it does lead to a fun little bug you can do with cursed equipment to make the final push less of a grind.
My mind was fuckin' blown honestly. Seeing that verdant field, seeing the name Rendarak, scary monsters just casually talking about how it's all an illusion. Wild. I honestly like the more eerie, bizarre feeling of just casually stumbling across this. And good on them for designing around my ability to just run around to parts of the island when I want. That's how I found a sweet portrait of the Princess of Moonbrooke!

rating the dragon quest protags based on how many living parents/parental figures they still have
SPOILERS BTW FOR EVERY MAINLINE DRAGON QUEST
DQ1: 0/5 - parents are never mentioned, therefore they are dead. also if you account the bad ending they are absolutely ultra dead bc the hero's entire bloodline was confirmed to be murked
DQ2: 3/5 - since there are three protagonists, the results are a bit skewed. but princess moonbrooke's parents are 100% dead
DQ3: 2.5/5 - i give a half point because technically ortega is alive for like. 3/4ths of the game. also the xenlong thing. you've also got a grandad who is. present
DQ4: 1/5 - they should technically receive no points, but their grandad Is alive and party chat implies he cares very much about his grandchild in spite of how he talks AND he lets you heal for free. so a single point it is
DQ5: 3.5/5 - while you could say the ortega reasoning applies as above, your kids also count as protags, therefore his parents (if you didn't get killed during a fight 💀) are alive and well by this ranking's standards. depending on whether you marry a briscoletti or bianca, points may get docked as bianca's mom bought the farm, but the two briscoletti ladies have both parents alive and well. hence the half point
DQ6: 5/5 - they are very much alive throughout the game, and if you account the other world he technically has two sets. so yeah. though the other world does get erased by the end of the game so uh 😶
DQ7: 10/5 - "hey auster, why did god give you TWO sets of biological parents who love and care for you?????"
DQ8: 1/5 - eight technically has trode as a parental figure of sorts, but he sucks ass :( his grandad is also alive but i mean. 🐹
DQ9: 0.5/5 - i can see the argument for aquila being a parental figure, so there's a half point since he's alive for the majority of the game. i'm not a believer of this but i'm a woman of fairness so i'll give him this. he does die tho
DQ10: ?????/5 - hard to rank this one since the point of the game is to be reborn so idk whether the first parent death should count or not. also i'm not sure if parents exists for all races i didn't play the game yet 🥹🥹🥹🥹
DQ11: 1/5 - amber is alive throughout the whole game :) also rab i guess, but he comes in mid game and eleven already had a grandad but he died. his bio parents are super dead tho

Dragon Quest VI had the potential to be soooo much better. For most of the game, I’m only ever using Hero, Carver, Nevan, and Milly because you really don’t need anyone other than them (Ashlynn… exists I guess) but when I unlock Terry and Lizzie, I find myself switching out my party a bunch for different situations and having a dungeon exploration party and a boss fight party. When I have them, it’s like one of the DQ games I find myself switching members out the most in (though DQ5 is always on top), but by that point the game is already over. It’s such a waste.

Decided to do these bust up drawing of the 5th hero and his three potential brides.
Headcanons on how they evolved: Madason/Abel - Evolved during the first timeskip (when he was enslaved at Crocodilopolis with Harry) at night. His growing friendship with Harry during nighttime (the only form of break they ever got during those ten years) eventually allowed him to evolve into an Umbreon (scenario suggested by @rock-the-illuminary so shoutout to him).
Bianca - The item shop owner in Stockenbarrel found a bunch of evolution stones but couldn't find use for selling an Ice Stone that he found, so he let Bianca off with it for free (this was a hard one to think up, but thank you SWSH for changing Glaceon's evolution method so I didn't have to brainstorm a scenario for her to find an Ice Rock). Also just worth noting that one of her “hair bangs” is shorter than the other.
Nera - Shortly before her 16th birthday, while at the Heaven's Above Abbey, she found a Water Stone washed ashore. This was what she wanted to become so she touched it and evolved.
Debora - She stayed at the Briscoletti residence because of her spoiled attitude. She'd frequently be showered and spoiled even further by the servants (which she'd often use either Charm or Baby Doll Eyes on them). She managed to evolve into a Sylveon from this despite seemingly ludicrous to do so.
Kinda funny how I drew them as cats back in 2021, and now I'm drawing them as veevees (but the veevees are still foxes in my eyes, minus Espeon).

i finished dragon quest 5, the DS version. this one was probably even more linear than 4 especially at the beginning but it makes up for that by having what is probably one of the most poignant stories in any RPG i've played. it was fun to see my boy Chuckler (hero) growing up and learning things. he's been through a lot. granted this is also at the cost of most of the non-hero characters getting shafted a bit, especially the women, but the story unfolds in a way that is genuinely moving. somtimes i got a little scared thinking about what would happen to Chuckler next.
being the first dq remake i played i struggled with this one the least, although looking at the SFC version a bit it doesn't seem much harder other than having the 3 party member limit. i think the only time i got truly upset at this game was the boss fight against 3 lava blobs that will sometimes do fire breath attack all at once. i appreciated some of the things the remake added such as the illustrious "BAG" feature. there were rough spots admittedly, the most prominent being when you first have to start recruiting monsters as the game doesn't tell you much. as rudimentary as the recruitment system is it was neat to see it in a game that predates pokemon (but not megami tensei) although it feels like your collection of monsters gets shafted near the end when you get more party members.
you can tell i've already slowed down playing these as dq5 took like a month to finish cause zelda got in the way among other things. i definitely want to play 6 in the future. 7 idk about that. 8 looks good. 10 isn't real and 9 and 11 look alright. maybe i should find things in the world i like that aren't video games but it feels increasingly difficult to do that as of late
i played the original 3 dragon quest (warrior) games over the past month so i'm putting my thoughts on them here
dragon quest 1: i did not finish after playing this for about 8 hours. it might have been more, i don't know. time feels irrelevant when playing this title. i wanted to give it a fair shake and i respect yuji horii's idea of wanting to make an rpg simple but i think he made it a bit too simple and the result is a mind numbing experience with rather grating audio. i listened to 2 or 3 wayneradiotv podcast episodes while playing. this does not feel like a real video game, it feels more like a fake tv show drake and josh game. it's reminiscent of a flash game you discover as a kid and get hooked on it for a few hours due to the grindy loop and then never play it again. it's also reminiscent of a lot of mobile phone games where you do nothing but press a button to make numbers go up endlessly so maybe they were really ahead of the curve with this one
dragon quest 2: started off incredibly refreshing compared to the first game, giving you plenty of more options and party members straight off the bat. at first it's pretty straightforward but once you get the boat the direction becomes incredibly unclear. sad to say i was not above using a walkthrough for a lot of it. as much as i like figuring out everything through writing down hints there is a lot of stuff that is truly cryptic, especially finding zahan. the game is already challenging but the last few areas in particular jack up the difficulty so much that after a point it stops being anger inducing and starts being really funny. it's all strangely enjoyable in a twisted way. i actually would say i liked most of this game but i would not recommend playing the original version unless you are a masochist or love to gamble
dragon quest 3: take dq2, give it an actual semblance of balance, make it even larger, and you have this one. having a highly customizable party thrown on you at the start of the game made me miss having specific characters that 2 had but it made for a better gameplay experience. somehow i didnt realize that you could have 4 party members in this one and struggled for the first few hours wondering why i ran out of mp so fast. the beginning isn't actually that hard but then there's a big difficulty jump at the desert, and then the difficulty doesn't really spike anymore until the necrogond cave to the very end. still, dq2 makes this game look very well balanced by comparison. there is a good balance of making you feel powerful and making enemies feel powerful too. i was less privy to using a walkthrough on this one but there was still some things i went to look up especially near the end where i was growing impatient. i made my own map for this one and it took me far too long to realize the world is just earth, which comes with its own baggage of having some strangely colonial themes. game was longer than i expected but overall still pretty good, this is the only one of the original nes 3 i would actually recommend playing but i figure the remakes make things a lot smoother too. i hope the hd2d remakes are good.

dragon quest is a totally normal jrpg series. it defined the genre so it has to be. there surely can't be wacky time travel shenanigans.
except dq7 is all about time travel and uh dq9 has one little bit of time travel in an extra quest, there's 2 instances of time travel in dq11, and uhhhhhh dq1 and dq2 have an alternate timeline in dqb1 and dqb2 i guess. and uhh if you consider dq5 takes place in the future of dq4 and dq6 in the past of dq4, bearing in mind what happens in dq heroes 1 and 2, empyrea has been not just world hopping but time hopping.
uuhhhhhh... love wins :3
nine altered the timeline to save aquila. eleven created another timeline to save veronica. what does it all mean…
