Can confirm, this was how I learned English. Only in my case, I was suddenly *living* in the anglosphere so I didn't even have the options to turn the subtitles on, and previously all I knew of the language was the alphabet, and some pre-k level words like "A is for apple" (and even those I often got the P's and Q's wrong).

Technically all you have to do to learn a language is drill flash cards and watch tv but the problem is the amount of flash cards and tv and what they don’t tell you is that your brain will protest the entire time

#it can feel a little like dropping a newborn in the deep end of the pool #but the one huge benefit of this is that you become proficient really quickly and the sentences come naturally to you #as it would to a native speaker-#-you don't have to carefully piece together grammar in your head the whole sentence will just come to you #downside: you will make the same grammatical mistakes that the locals often make #mmari rambles #linguistics #there was a wild short period of time while my brain was getting 'rewired' to this new language #where I felt like the USAmericans were talking to me in korean #like when a classmate would run up to me when we were running laps and told me '야! (my name)! 할 수 있어! 가자!'#and I was so dumbfounded I stopped right in my tracks and stared after him for solid 30 seconds
