I ran into them and he lifted me off my feet in what must have been the best hug I had ever had in a really long time. “I cannot believe my luck!” I laughed when he finally put me down.

“Are you wearing my school uniform?" San asked, looking at my clothes.

I nodded happily, “I convinced my parents to let me come back for my last year. They were hesitant at first but when I sent them my PowerPoint argument, they really couldn’t refuse.”

San rolled his eyes playfully. “Who sends their parents a PowerPoint presentation to allow them to live in a small town for their last year of high school?”

“Surprise,” I said softly, feeling a bit embarrassed when he put it like that.

San scratched the back of his head, looking apologetic. “Hey, don’t be like that, I’m just teasing. Since when did you get a soft shell?” 

That’s when I noticed we weren’t alone. “Oh, I’m sorry! San, why didn’t you say you had a friend here?” I scolded him, slapping his arm.

When still nothing came out of Seonghwa’s mouth, I sent him an odd look, but focused on San instead. “What are the chances that we might have the same home room?”

San strolled with me, pretending to think. “I dunno. I doubt they’d lump me in with the smarty pants.”

“Oh, come on. You never give yourself enough credit!” I pushed his shoulder.

“I’m serious!” San insisted. “Actually, that reminds me, how is it going to look like to the big schools when you say you’ve graduated from the middle of nowhere?”

I shrugged. “It doesn’t matter, San. You know my parents will just throw money at whatever university they want me to go to. That’s why they let me have this year for myself. They know I’ll have to commit to their life plan soon enough.” 

That final year was full of twists and turns. A phone app company released a new app called Love Alarm. It was supposed to notify you when someone came within ten meters of you and they liked you. Everyone downloaded it immediately and it changed how everything worked. Instead of confessing to someone, you just walked closely to them, and their Love Alarm would activate on their phone. The chimes could be heard at all times of the day, followed by either groans when the receiver didn’t reciprocate or cheers when they did.

It was also around the same time when I began to avoid San. I made as many excuses as I could. I was hanging out with my girl best friends or studying, or Facetiming my parents. Suddenly, there was no time to go eat food or play video games in the PC room. I had become a liar, just like my parents, and even worse, I was doing it to the one person who didn’t deserve it.

“Topaz!” I winced. That was an angry Choi San. “Why have you been avoiding me?”

I stopped my walk to the gates of our school. I had memorized exactly how far ten meters was. “I’m not avoiding you. I’m busy.”

San shook his head. He took a step towards me and I took a step back. “You’re avoiding me. Even when you had all those clubs and school to juggle in middle school, we still had time to hang out. You’re being weird and I want to know why.”

“You’re looking too deep into this San, I promise you, I’m not being weird.” The words were barely out of my mouth before San took another step and then another. I had to jump back to avoid the ten meter distance.

San narrowed his eyes at me. “I knew it.”

“You’re the one being weird! Why do you keep coming closer? Clearly I want to keep some distance between us. We’re just friends--” 

Before I could say anymore, San burst into a flat out run and there was nothing I could do before I set off his Love Alarm. He pulled his phone out of his pocket right in front of me and his screen showed that there was someone within ten meters who loved him.

“Why must you be such a stubborn, insistent butthead?” I asked.

San grinned, this one slow and satisfied. “There’s the girl I know and love.”

I blinked slowly, “What?”

San motioned with his head. “Check your phone.”

I pulled my phone out of my bag, hands shaking. When I unlocked the screen, my Love Alarm showed the same thing that was on San’s--someone within ten meters of me loved me. I hadn't heard it go off because it was in my bag and San’s had gone off at the exact same time.

“This… can’t be…” I looked up slowly from my phone and stared at San. “How?”

San pouted, “Since the day you came back and jumped into my arms.”

“Excuse you?!” I shouted, “Are you freaking serious right now?”

“Yeah! That’s why I’m so angry at you. I’ve been waiting to ring your Love Alarm for months now.” I pinched myself and yelped when it hurt. San started to laugh at me. “Do you seriously think this is a dream?”

Now it was my turn to pout, “I thought I was ruining our friendship. Either you found out I loved you and started to avoid me, or because I was avoiding you, you stopped being my friend. IT WAS TORTUROUS!”

“Well,” San held out his hand to me, wriggling his fingers when I didn’t take it immediately, “It’s real.”

I took his hand, wrapping it around his instead of finger interlocking. He swung our arms happily before tugging me along. “Now what?” I asked.

“Now?” San looked up at the sky, “Now I walk you to school every day and when everyone asks what’s going on, I tell them we rung each other’s Love Alarms!”

“San!”

“What? It’s the truth. Besides,” San started to get a little shy, “I want everyone to know you’re mine.”

After that, San and I were inseparable. We went to café dates after school. He sulked on my bed in my bedroom when I studied for school. Lunch was always sitting as close as we could on the bench, usually busting a gut over teasing each other. I had actually forgotten about the awkward friend of San's from the beginning of the year.

On my lunch hour on a particular day, I made my way to find San so we could eat lunch together. Apparently his mum had made us something really delicious today. I was practically skipping past the library when my Love Alarm went off.

I began to grin. "San, you can't eat in the library, you goof." I ran to the doors and pulled them open, fully expecting to see a dark head of hair and his rebel eyebrow slit.

Instead, an ash-colored head turned my way. His glasses were haphazardly clinging to the bridge of his nose and his mouth was agape in genuine surprise. Park Seonghwa was in the library. Then who--?

"It's not what you think!" Seonghwa stood up at the study desk he was occupying, face getting pink.

I honestly could not process what was going on. A boy I barely knew was in love with me? "There’s not really a way of getting around the fact that you rang my Love Alarm," I said a-matter-of-factly.

"Well!" Seonghwa sounded flustered but I could see the gears turning in his head. He wanted to deny it but there was no way.

"I don't even know you!" I said with confusion clearly coating my voice.

Seonghwa’s eyes stayed glued to an unknown spot on the floor. "Yeah, well, I know you. I know that you love sweets and get angry when San steals yours when you're on dates. I know that you study really hard and barely get any sleep, just to spend time with San and not let your grades drop. I know that you smell like vanilla and taste like chocolate." 

I tightened my fists. I couldn't be mad when that just sounded like San telling his best friend about his girlfriend. "So what?"

"So what?" Seonghwa said, embarrassment clearly making him angry. His face was withdrawn and cold. "You don't even know who I am and all I want is for you to run to me like you did to San that first day of school. Your love and adoration for him was so painfully clear that it made my heart ache. You didn't care, you just ran and threw yourself into his arms. How could I not fall a little bit in love with you then?"

I really didn't know what to say to that. Had it been that obvious that I loved San then, even though it had been years since I last saw him? While I was distracted with the thoughts in my head, Seonghwa took his moment.

"Don't you understand how hard it is to be in love with my best friend's girlfriend? I haven't seen San this happy… ever! He deserves it. But he tortures me when he talks about you and you're all he ever talks about.
