Queer Reads: Parker St. John

For recommendation #22, we have cowboys. 

I picked up these books in January because I was waiting on a different cowboy series that wasn’t out yet, and these are SO GOOD. (the other cowboy books I was waiting on were not, unfortunately. Maybe if I hadn’t read these first…) These books mostly take place in a small town in eastern Idaho. There’s lots of second-chances and opposites attract in these books, but one of the MCs is always a rugged cowboy. 

One of the things St. John does well is give us complex, well-developed characters. These guys have pasts, and baggage, and they’re trying really hard to be good people. They don’t always make the right choices, and they kind of suck at communicating, but you can sympathize with them, and feel for them, and root for their happily ever afters. 

If you’re in the mood for small-town cowboys, give these a try. And remember, read queer books.

In The Kitchen ~ Down In Flames

So Aemond dreamt of you...like a lot

He's not really sure when it began, but it's always more likely to happen when you spend the night at his and Aegon's

which is FREQUENT

you've been spending more and more time at the apartment, appearing in the kitchen, the living room...

It's hard for him to pretend he doesn't feel anything for you

It's hard for him to watch Aegon treat you the way he does, listen to your arguments, listen to you cry

He'll cook his breakfast and you'll join him, not normally speaking to one another.

existing in comfortable silence as you make your coffee, waiting for Aegon to wake up

it's depressingly domestic

that's what Aemond dreams about

waking and making you breakfast; you seated on the counter as you normally are, watching him cook, cracking jokes.

He's smiling, always smiling when he's dreaming of you

Placing kisses all over your face.

things don't seem so fucked up when you're in that dream life together.

Just you and Aemond, in the kitchen

It's so simple, he can almost see it when he's awake

there's a moment before you meet each other's eyes where he can still pretend

and then your eyes meet his

and the walls come up

and Aemond is awake

Itsuki in Demon Wars: Down in Flames

Yokai are not (the western idea of) demons and can be friendly as often as malevolent, but the comparison is easily made, so to have an Illyana stand-in here who is part human and part yokai, but the *human* part is seen as the problem, the violent part? That’s just a very nice twist. I like it, and the backstory given here.

Also, appropriate levels of ass-kicking.
