Weaving Her Magic Since 1912 the skills of tapestry weaving have been passed down from ‘Dovecot Master Weaver’ to ‘Apprentice’. OOOH, I love this so much. In 2011 the ‘Apprenticeship Programme’ was relaunched at ‘Dovecot’ with the support of the ‘Dovecot Foundation’. ‘Dovecot’ is one of the only organisations to offer formal training in tapestry weaving. The ‘Tapestry Apprenticeship’ is vital to training and inspiring new generations of weavers. Artist Elaine Wilson is one of those talented weavers who completed her three-year apprenticeship at ‘Dovecot’. Wilson and will begin a new career with the ‘Studios’ as a ‘Junior Weaver' this year. During her apprenticeship, Edinburgh-based painter Wilson learnt the art of warping the loom, creating and inking on a tapestry cartoon and producing work that explores line, shape, texture and colour. Every task undertaken by Wilson is a new challenge to an apprentice weaver. At the studio Wilson worked alongside experience weavers on full-scale tapestry projects and created her own tapestry designs. Finally back in the studio today after a packed week spent driving all over the country! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to @dovecotstudios yesterday to listen to @katietreggiden.1 talking about her new Weaving book! It’s so interesting to hear about the weaving industry from a different perspective and to read about so many incredible makers all over the world. It was good to hear that I’m not the only weaver who struggles with how to class my work; Is it art? Craft? Are they both the same thing? I like to think that of my designs as functional art created using a craft process. Weaving Her Magic From translating her own paintings to weaving works inspired by Romantic painter JMW Turner and contemporary artist Jenny Saville, Junior Weaver Elaine Wilson is a talent to be reckoned with. Wilson completed a three year apprentice at ‘Dovecot Studios’ in Edinburgh and, as of 2021, became a ‘Junior Weaver’. Not something to be taken lightly. During her apprenticeship Wilson worked directly alongside experienced weavers on full-scale tapestry projects and created her own tapestry designs. Whilst learning the technical and practical skills of weaving during her three years as an apprentice at ‘Dovecot’ Wilson (like all apprentices) undertook her own study into the process, story telling and history of tapestry.
