I finally got to THAT part the other night, and I really love how it recontextualizes Noah's character. Up to this point, he kind of comes off as a wise leader to the party, he has his flaws, but they seem pretty insignificant. Suddenly, after learning about him and Mio in this past life, that image is shattered. Noah's not perfect, he's a deeply flawed person, who can be selfish and hurt people to get what he wants. While our Noah has clearly been influenced by his friends and the way his own life has turned out and is on a better path than N was, there's hints of that side of his personality in Noah's scenes! The one with Riku where he gets lucky seven immediately came to mind for me, but I'd be interested in watching a lot of earlier scenes again for more.

A Very Good Day

Perhaps the most vivid memory of my childhood, and certainly the most joyful, is the moment my mum won Double Play, the Connecticut State Lottery game show.

Nowadays, the lottery in Connecticut is the same as anywhere else: if the numbers on your ticket match the ones drawn, you go back where you bought the ticket to stake your claim, and some money will show up in your bank account. In 1977, though, Connecticut handled its lottery with pizzazz. The seven people who came closest to matching the drawn numbers would appear on a game show.

Yes, seriously.

For legal reasons, I'm sure, the game show was based on luck every bit as much as the drawing itself. Each contestant would be asked to call heads or tails, then mash a big red button that would randomly make the call. Win or lose, the next person would have to do the same. If you got it wrong twice, you were eliminated from the game.

And, well…my mum made it all the way to the end. She won the grand prize. My sister squealed. My dad leapt from his seat, shouting, “She did it!” And I just stumbled around the set, taking it all in, this moment of delirious fantasy.

For the first—the only—time in my life, I saw my mum blissfully happy. This woman had been orphaned and rendered penniless at the age of eight. I have no idea what horrors she had to face growing up—she would never discuss her distant past with me—but she would spend the rest of her life buying and hoarding, buying and hoarding, trying to fill that void from her childhood penury. No matter how much she had, she would always buy lottery tickets, ignoring my dad’s teasing remarks about the nigh impossibility of winning, in hopes of someday striking it rich. Of being safe and secure. Of being happy.
