Going My Way was the highest grossing film of 1944 and garnered strong praises from as many sources as I could find. Bing Crosby gives a heartwarming and lighthearted performance as a new-in-town priest attempting to improve his NYC community by....starting a boys' choir? It all makes sense in the end, but makes for a slow start to this 2+ hour film.
Double Indemnity was unique in a way that almost lost my attention at the beginning. The film utilizes an overarching narration that serves as the final confession, which felt out of place at times. However, I came around to this style at the end and fully enjoyed it. This film is truly like no other, and I'd be willing to watch it again at any time.
Double Indemnity also features Sam McDaniel, the older brother of Hattie McDaniel, playing an important - yet uncredited - role in the scheme.
At the 17th Academy Awards, Going My Way made Oscar history for having one person nominated for more than one acting award for the same role. Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both Actor and Supporting Actor for the same role, winning the award for Supporting Actor.
Going My Way also won top honors for Best Film, Directing, and Acting for Barry Fitzgerald at both the Golden Globes and the NYFCC Awards.
Double Indemnity remains a top film among critics and the general audience with high ratings from Rotten Tomatoes. Double Indemnity also appears in both the 1998 and the 2007 AFI top 100 lists, with a peak placement of #29.
Unofficial Review: This feels like a strong upset. Going My Way is cute, though.

Edward G. Robinson and Billy Wilder both having been Jewish, I wonder if the distinct structural similarity between the Unetanneh Tokef and Robinson's character's rant about suicide in Double Indemnity was perhaps not a coincidence.

Barbara Stanwyck & Fred MacMurray in Double Indemnity 1944
Double Indemnity is a 1944 American crime thriller film noir directed by Billy Wilder, co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and produced by Buddy DeSylva and Joseph Sistrom. The screenplay was based on James M. Cain's 1943 novel of the same title, which appeared as an eight-part serial for Liberty magazine beginning in February 1936.
The film stars Fred MacMurray as an insurance salesman, Barbara Stanwyck as a provocative housewife who is accused of killing her husband, and Edward G. Robinson as a claims adjuster whose job is to find phony claims. The term "double indemnity" refers to a clause in certain life insurance policies that doubles the payout in cases when the death is in a statistically rare manner
