Later that night
Skyhold University Hospitals and Clinics, Emergency Room / Skyhold City Police Station / Eolas Books, Solas’ Apartment
Garden-Spirit Modern AU
Under a cut, since this got PARTICULARLY long.
@silent-of-spirit, thank you for the loan of Feron, Aluriel, and Anders :)
“What do we have Ivara?” Anders asked, running quickly next to his intern, as the ER doors opened.
“Elf Male, 35, concussion, contusions, and a nasty bilateral laceration on the chest. Assault. Elf Female, 32, right leg is dislocated. Multiple contusions, broken nose. Again, assault, at the same address. Wife and daughter of the man were treated for minor bruising at the scene and are in the waiting room,” Aluriel recited quickly as they wheeled the stretcher holding the down the hallway. “Family friend is also in the waiting room with police. Apparently he was the first one on the scene.”
“Which one assaulted the other?”
“Neither. Woman’s ex-husband attacked the family. She’s the man’s sister,” Aluriel answered. “No need for security. He’s already in custody. Apparently Charger took this case out of personal interest.”
“Well I’d hate to be him right now.”
Feron walked into the surveillance room, face dark and vaguely terrifying as he looked through the window to the interrogation room beyond.
"Out." Was all he said, quiet, but the two officers fled the room without a word. He clicked the button for the cameras, leaving the moment they flickered off. He strode into the interrogation room, tossing his jacket on the back of the opposite chair, rolling up his sleeves as he blatantly ignored the smiling man cuffed to the table.
"So's this gonna be a good cop bad cop thing? Get info out of me?" The man spat, blood and saliva landing in a glob at Feron's feet. "I ain't telling you shit."
Feron paused, gaze flicking to the man for a brief moment before he finished rolling up his sleeves. "I didn't ask you to talk." He said simply. Jethan looked confused, staring up at the hulking qunari with suspicion. "See, I have a thing about abusers, rapists, and pedophiles. You don't have to say a word. Chances are, when I'm done, you won't be able to walk. There is no good cop, bad cop, Jethan. There's only me. And I'm pissed."
“Yeah, what’s my little slut of a wife to you?” Jethan said, smirking. “You fucking her too?”
“Watch your mouth, asshole. She’s not your wife. We have the records of the divorce,” Feron roared. Jethan shrank back. “And no, for your personal question. I’m not fucking her.”
“Surprising, since who isn’t,” Jethan spat again, looking at the floor. “So what’s the deal this time? Restraining order? Lock me up for a few days?”
“30 plus years in prison.”
“WHAT?”
“Stalking. Breaking and entering. Endangering a minor. Domestic assault. Aggravated assault. Premeditated attempted murder. Terroristic threats. Breaking a restraining order. Assault with a deadly weapon. Resisting arrest-“
“I was unconscious!”
“RESISTING ARREST-“ Feron said louder. “A few counts of Battery 1… and I’m sure the DA could definitely pull up some more counts against you. And worse, you decided to make it personal with me. You know what they say. Mess with the bull…”
Jethan’s face went pale as he contemplated his situation. Feron watched him, eye narrowing. Abusers didn’t last long in prison. Less so if it was an elf.
“I want a lawyer.”
“She’s in the bathroom,” Fehron laughed. “For now, it’s just you and me.”
Lily sat in the waiting room next to Solas, her hands shaking in her lap. It had been a long time since anyone had come out and talked to them, about either her father or her aunt. The tension in her mother’s face was like a piano string about to snap, dangerous and deadly. She fought a squeak as she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Da’lan, it’s alright,” Solas soothed. “You were very brave tonight.”
“I-I know… Thanks Solas.” She hugged herself, one hand rubbing her arm where she had been hit with something. “Can I borrow your cellphone?”
“Of course. Why?”
“I have to call Grace. I-“ she paused and looked at the sleek black phone, “-I don’t really want to go into work tomorrow.”
“Ah yes. You’re welcome to spend the day at the bookshop,” Solas answered, standing up. “Would you like something to drink?” He gestured to a vending machine, flashing a few dollar bills from his wallet.
“Just… water I guess,” Lily said sheepishly. He could hear the dial tone as two sodas rocketed their way through the vending machine. “Grace? You told me to call you if there was an emergency…”
“Feron.” The petite brunette public defender eyed the qunari suspiciously. “I should have known. You want something?”
“Aeda Brosca. I knew they’d send you. How’s the family?” Feron laughed, smiling at her.
“Cut the crap, Charger. You want something. Spit,” Aeda snapped. Feron sighed.
“This guy is scum Brosca. Please do not let him get off of this.”
“Give me the details, and I’ll decide if it’s worth being disbarred.”
“Guy’s wife, Fenara Lavellan fled the reservation about a year ago to escape his abuse. Filed for divorce, got it all tidied up all nice and legal. She’s been living with her brother and his family in this little slum of an apartment down in Lowtown,” Feron started.
“Go on…”
“Their father, one of the leaders on the Reservation kept an eye on him to try to keep this asshole on the land and not looking for his ex-wife. Well he got past them. Tracked her down via social media to the apartment, broke in, slapped up his ex-relatives and put Fenara and her brother in the hospital. We’re waiting to hear on their conditions, but both will be fine thanks to a man called Solas Erelan. Runs a bookshop up in Oldtown. Family friend apparently.” He paused waiting for her reaction.
“Sounds all tied up on your end. Best I could do is get him to plead and get a reduced sentence,” Aeda thought outloud, clicking her stiletto heel against the floor. “What’s your angle on this?”
“The Lavellans are my girlfriend’s cousins.”
“Aha, and there’s the tricky bit,” Aeda laughed, flashing a devious smile.
“No, Aeda, you don’t understand. This guy has been worrying Liahra sick for as long as I’ve known her. He needs to learn a lesson. Restraining order isn’t going to cut it this time. I want him gone. For good,” Feron growled. Aeda frowned.
“Let me see the charges… Attempted murder? Even with me, there’s no way I can get him off with less than 10 years.” She tapped her heel again. “Let me see him for 10 minutes. I’ll explain the situation to him… You get off in 10 minutes right?”
“That’s right.”
“I’ll just… leave the door unlocked when I leave,” she laughed, grinning. “Go take a smoke Charger. You’ll get your hands on him soon enough.”
The waiting room emptied more and more as the night passed steadily onwards. Solas paced back and forth, the t-shirt on his chest still damp with sweat, blood, and tears. The door opening to the ward made him stop and look up, the scruffy, ponytailed doctor walking out, wiping his hands on his scrubs.
“Mrs. Lavellan?”
Anayra stood in a hurry, walking quickly up to the doctor. “Is my husband alright?”
“Yes. He’s asleep right now, and heavily sedated. Your sister-in-law is also alright. She’s awake, but is also heavily medicated. She’s in a lot of pain. I’m Doctor Anders, by the way. I’ll be taking care of both of them.” Anders stuck out his hand and shook hers. “How are you holding up? Your daughter?”
“We’re doing alright, as much as can be expected,” Anayra sighed. Lily was drifting off to sleep in the seat she had ensconced herself in hours before. “Can we see them?”
“Of course. Aluriel?” Anders yelled back towards the ward. A young elf popped her head out.
“Yes Doctor?”
“Aluriel, please escort Mrs Lavellan and her daughter back to rooms 13 and 14.”
Anayra walked over to Lily and shook her awake gently. Solas sighed and started to walk towards the door, gripping his helmet tightly. His right hand ached from where he had hit Jethan across the face.
“Messer Erelan?”
He turned at Anayra’s voice, brows furrowing. “Yes?”
“Would you like to come with us? I don’t want Fen to be alone, and, with all due respect to her, I want to stay with my husband,” she said, almost breathless.
“I- I’d like that very much. Thank you,” Solas answered, stunned. He held his wrist out and a bright pink bracelet was snapped around it, the small elven woman leading them through the maze of the hospital. She pulled a thick curtain back and ushered Anayra and Lily inside, shutting it securely behind them.
“Miss Lavellan is right over here,” Aluriel said, sliding back the curtain. Solas nodded and ducked under the fabric, straightening in the dimly lit room. “I… I knew Fenara back on the Reservation. Thank you for saving her.”
“It was nothing,” Solas said, sitting next to the bed. Fenara’s good eye blinked open, flinching.
“Solas.” She cracked a half smile, most of her face a frozen mottled purple of brusing and dried blood.
“Hey. How are you feeling?” he asked, leaning toward her.
“I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck,” she groaned. “Meds are nice though.”
“What’s the word on the leg?”
She groaned and pulled herself upright in the bed, pulling back the sheet. Her leg was bandaged heavily with compression bandages. “They slingshotted it back into place. Knee’s sprained, so I’ll have to take it easy at work, and I’m required to take a week off so I can get these drugs out of my system, but over all, I’m fine. Thanks to you.” She smiled at him again, mussing her hair. “How long have I been out?”
“A few hours. Anayra is next door with your brother,” Solas said, passing her a cup with a straw in it. She drank it down gratefully.
“Shit. How’s Doron? Jethan slashed at him with that knife–“
“He’ll be fine. Apparently he’s still sedated, but he’s going to be fine.”
“And Jethan?” Fenara asked, her good eye widening in momentary terror.
“In custody. Likely being questioned by one ‘Feron Charger’.”
“Good.”
Aluriel came back into the room, wheeling a small cart. She smiled at her friend. “Fen, hey. We’re just about ready to release you.”
“How’s Doron?” Fenara asked, wincing as Aluriel slid the IV’s out of her hands, shuddering at the length of plastic tubing that had been in her body.
“We’re admitting him. Anayra will be staying with him. Do you have anywhere to go?”
Fenara opened her mouth before Solas cut in. “They’ll be coming back to the shop with me until the apartment is cleared by the police.”
“Good. I’ll want to get your information then Mr. Erelan. Just so we can make sure where to send the detective when he checks back in with us. Do you have a car?”
“I can be back with one in about half an hour. I need to ride my bike back and swap it out,” Solas explained standing up. “How long do you need?”
“Half an hour should be fine.”
Solas started to leave, pulling his helmet over his head, when Fenara started talking to him.
“Wait! Solas! Take Lily back with you.”
“I’ll ask Anayra quick,” Solas replied, his voice muffled by the helmet. Turning the corner fast he stuck his head in. “Anayra? Do you want me to bring Lily back to the bookshop? I need to get my car so I can take Fenara there.”
Lily looked up from where she was sitting, holding her father’s hand. Her face was tight, and worried. “I don’t want to leave Babae.”
“Lily,” Anayra sighed. “You can’t stay. And you need your sleep. You have to take care of yourself to take care of your father.”
“Yes Mamae.”
Solas took the girl’s hand and led her out of the back room and into the parking lot, reaching into the back of his bike and pulling out a spare helmet. “Here. You know how to ride?”
“I’ve ridden Fen’s Vespa,” Lily replied, pulling the helmet over her head. She flipped the visor up and looked at him. “It’s not that much different, right?”
“A little bit different. You’ll want to hold on.”
Lily nodded and flipped the visor down, waiting for Solas to climb onto the bike before she climbed on behind him, hands on his shoulders. The bike roared to life and squealed out of the parking lot, taking back roads and alleyways back to Oldtown.
“So you have a bike and a car?” Lily yelled over the engine. Solas nodded.
“Yes. Do you want to come back to the hospital to pick up Fenara with me, or do you want to stay at the shop?” he yelled back, taking a sharp left down a dimly lit path, turning back onto a main road.
“I’m not sure!” Lily yelled again. “I’ve never seen where you live!”
“It’s just above the shop! Don’t worry!”
They stopped smoothly at the back entrance to the shop, the little weathered door sparkling in the light misty dew of the oncoming morning. Lily hopped off and pulled off the helmet, handing it back to Solas. He pulled off his own and locked up the bike, motioning to a small garage just off the alleyway.
“Car’s in there. Come on in the back and we’ll get you settled in.”
The door opened with multiple clicks, and it opened to the darkened, but recognizable backroom of Eolas books. He opened another door, turning locks and revealing a dark, narrow staircase. Lily started climbing, a little apprehensive.
“Just up there!” Solas yelled up. “I’ll be up in a second!”
Lily climbed up to the second floor, gasping in surprise as it opened into a spacious apartment. It was almost a perfect opposite of the shop downstairs. Where the shop was warm, dusty, and cluttered, the apartment was stark white with art hanging on the walls, and modern, but comfortable furniture.
“”You live here?” she asked, her mouth hanging open slightly. Solas laughed as he mounted the landing.
“Surprising, isn’t it?”
“It’s so different!”
“Yes, well, rare books are generally far more lucrative than people think. Budget accordingly and you can afford quite a bit of things that people don’t usually guess you can own. Kitchen is over there, bathroom is there. You can use the TV, and any of the gaming systems if you’d like to stay here,” Solas explained, walking back through a closed door. When he came back out, he was wearing a fresh t-shirt and had bandaged his knuckles, opening a small cabinet in the kitchen and taking out a pill bottle.
“Ibuprofen?” Lily asked, holding out her hand. Solas nodded and put two into her palm, handing her a cup of water. “Thanks.”
“I’m guessing your staying, da’lan?” he said gently, noting how shaky her hand was as she brought it to her mouth.
“If.. if that’s okay?”
“It is,” Solas sighed. “There are extra pillows and blankets in that closet. Try and get some rest. I’ll be back in about fifteen minutes with Fenara.”
He turned down the stairs, locking the doors behind him as he walked out to the garage. His car roared to life with almost as much fervor as the bike, but coasted through the city streets like a ghost. He pulled up silently in front of the hospital, leaving it running as Fenara was wheeled out of the waiting room by Aluriel.
“Ready to get out of here?” Solas asked, opening the passenger door. They started to adjust the wheelchair to slide Fenara in, a few prescription bottles thrust into his hand.
“Make sure she takes at least a few of these,” Aluriel groaned, helping Fenara shift into the passenger seat. “I know her. She won’t if she thinks she can get away with it. And don’t let her go back to work for a few days. She’s had some pretty serious pain medication in her system and it needs to clear before she gets back on that moped of hers.”
“Aluriel, stop worrying about me,” Fenara muttered, pulling the seatbelt around her, wincing as it pressed into her bruises.
“That’s not going to happen. I’ll message you with any updates on your brother,” Aluriel laughed, almost trying to hide the urge to cry. “And please, Mr. Erelan. If she’s not safe I’ll come after you next.”
“She’ll be safer than I’ll be,” Solas assured her, sliding into the drivers seat and slamming the door.” The passenger door slammed shut and they coasted away from the hospital. Fenara leaned back.
“You changed your shirt?” she asked, finally, looking at him in the pre-dawn light. Solas nodded.
“Didn’t want to show up again covered in your blood,” he replied, turning down a main road.
“Sorry about that.”
“Don’t worry. I’m just glad you’re alright,” Solas soothed, gently touching her shoulder. Fenara flinched, pulling away. Solas backed off. “Will you be able to get up the stairs? I can carry you if I have–“
“I can walk!” Fenara snapped hastily, immediately regretting it. “I can walk. I’ll be fine Solas. I’m guessing Lily and I will share the couch?”
Solas shook his head. “Lily gets the couch, you get the bed. I can sleep in the armchair I the study.”
“Solas, I’m not going to steal your bed from you,” Fenara complained.
“Please, allow me this one simple request, Fen,” Solas sighed. “You need to sleep so your leg will heal. Just use the bed.”
“Fine. But I still feel horrible about all this. I’ve dragged you into my mess.” Solas looked at her. She sounded as though she was about to cry. “I’m so sorry I called you. I shouldn’t- I couldn’t–“
“Fenara. I’m glad you called me. In fact, I’m elated that you called me,” Solas told her, pulling into his garage. “If you hadn’t you’d be dead, or possibly worse. I would never forgive myself if I allowed that to happen.”
“But it’s my fault,” Fenara sobbed, pressing a hand into her good eye.
“Your ex-husband’s derangements are not your fault, Fenara. I’m just glad you, Lily, and your family are alright.” Solas opened his door and got out, quickly dashing around the front and opening hers before she had a chance to protest. “The shop’s just behind us. My home is above it.”
“Where’s Lily?” Fenara sniffed, wiping her eye again.
“Hopefully asleep. Though, it looks like she might have the TV on,” Solas said, eyeing the glowing window.
“Do you have cable?”
“Yes?”
“History channel,” Fenara laughed, the sound a little pained as she limped towards the door. “Little nerd.”
“Come on, let’s get you inside,” Solas laughed back. She stumbled on the stairs, Solas’ hand automatically catching her as she fell backwards. He felt her stiffen up at his touch and moved away as soon as she was steady. “I’m sorry. I should be more careful.”
“It’s not your fault,” Fenara sighed, leaning touching the bruises on her face gingerly. Solas nodded and unlocked the doors, letting them up into his apartment.
“Lily?” Fenara called up the stairs.
“Fen! Do you need help?” Lily’s head appeared at the top of the stairs, tripping down them and hooking her aunt’s arm over her shoulders, guiding Fenara to the couch. They sat down with a thump, both looking at each other, their faces exhausted. Solas walked up after them, digging around in the closet at the top of the stairs. He tossed Lily a pillow and grabbed one for himself, walking towards a door that was seemed to be his study.
“You two settle in. Lily, Fenara is using my room. I’m going to go to bed. Just knock if you need anything”
The TV was switched off, and Fenara was dosed with her pain medication, and put to bed. Lily crawled in beside her aunt, loathe to sleep alone. The little apartment fell into silence.
Back at the police station, the cameras flicked off as Aeda Brosca walked toward the door. Feron watched her, his eye narrowing as she let the door click, but not latch fully behind her. He could still see Jethan sitting in the room, his hands cuffed to the desk. There was a tentative knock at the door. He opened it to see the dwarf’s frown.
“Don’t fuck him up too much, Bull,” she said simply. He nodded, hiding a smile. “I need him to be fit to face the judge.”
“Don’t worry Aeda. He’ll be able to walk by the time you need him to,” Bull hummed, cracking his knuckles. He brushed past her and walked into the interrogation room. Jethan glared at Feron, still spitting blood to the side.
“So are we done? Can I go to my cozy cell now?” he asked, pulling against the cuffs. Bull started laughing. “What? You think this is funny?”
“No. That just means that I’m off the clock now,” Bull growled, cracking his knuckles again. Jethan shrank back in his chair again, now very afraid of the large, beefy qunari standing over him. “Which means I finally get to do this…”
The officers outside winced as there was a ear splitting crunch, and a pained yelp. Bull walked out, wiping his hand off. He looked at them both, the eye slitted.
“Okay boys. What happened?” he asked, letting a tinge of malice into his voice. Both officers tripped over the other.
“He- um…” “He fell!” “Yeah, he fell!”
“That’s right,” Bull said, grinning. “Now, I want that bastard frog marched to his cell on the double. I’m going to go pay a visit to the hospital, check on Mr and Mrs Lavellan. The woman was discharged and is staying at the Erelan residence with the girl. I’ll go see them in a few hours. Let them get some sleep first.”
“Yes Chief!”
Feron walked out of the station just as the sun was rising. It was a new day. But it wasn’t a good one just yet.

Getting Into My OC
tagged by @galadrieljones specifically for Lily!
NAME: Lily Anayra Doron Rutherford (formerly Lily Anayra Doron Lavellan)
AGE: 5 at the start of DA:I with fics ranging up to her mid 30′s
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Lesbian
PROFESSION: Mercenary
BACKGROUND:
Born in the upper reaches of the Free Marches as the only child of a Rivani Seer and a Dalish Hunter, Lily spent her early childhood among Clan Lavellan, where her father Doron Lavellan was from. When her aunt Fenara and her father were told to go to the Conclave to collect information (and to get Fenara out of the grip of her abusive husband) Lily and Anayra followed behind them, hoping to keep their family apprised of the Templar situation. The explosion at the Temple of Sacred Ashes killed her father and her Aunt. Lily and Anayra continued to make a home together in Haven, helping as they could with the growing Inquisition’s needs. Despite their losses, the two were close as Anayra helped council the mages of the Inquisition to support the Herald, who was learned to be a former Hunter for the Chantry. Anayra lost her life at Haven, saving her daughter.
Lily was then found by the Herald of Andraste and rescued from the wreckage of what had become her home, and was placed into the care of Commander Rutherford while the Herald subdued the dragon’s attack. Feeling fiercely protective of her rescuer, Lily refused to give up on the Herald’s apparent lack of survival, and became increasingly attached to both the Herald and the Commander, eventually referring to them as “Mama” and “Papa”. She was formally adopted by Grace and Cullen Rutherford on their wedding day.
Lily was a favorite among the Inquisitor’s companions as well, receiving extensive lessons on any and all aspects she seemed interested in. She became particularly attached to Solas, finding his hostility something of a game. In time, the wills of the little girl wore down on him, and Solas assumed his position as her mentor and close confidante.

Endurance- 9/10. Lily’s a powerhouse. If something has her sights set on it, she will continue until it is finished, physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Charisma- 10/10 - Manipulative and charming, Lily uses every possible trick in her arsenal to get what she wants with the least amount of danger.
Intelligence- 7/10. Prone to the odd rash decision and angry outburst, regardless, Lily is a smart, almost prodigy child.
Agility- 9/10. Quick, spritely, and sprints like a knife through air.

Fenara/Solas, Jethan Hareel, Lily, Anayra/Doron, Maeral Lavellan
Garden-Spirit Modern AU
For @silent-of-spirit and @dadrunkwriting
“Fen, are you safe?” was the first thing Fenara heard when she answered her phone. Her father’s voice sounded panicked, and breathless.
“Yeah, what’s wrong babae?” she asked, clicking the lock around her moped tire. She started walking towards the peeling door, her keys held tight in her hand.
“Jethan got out of the Reservation. Sweetie, he’s coming after you.”
Fenara’s keys tumbled to the floor with a clank as she sunk against the cold brick siding of the ramshackle apartment building.
“Oh Creators.”
“Fen, it’s going to be okay. Just… lock up everything. I doubt he’ll go as far as to break into the building. It’s alarmed right?”
“Barely, but yes,” she answered, fighting back the urge to vomit. Images flashed through her mind of her ex-husband’s fist swinging towards her face, and purple bruises adorning her arms.
“Good. Get inside. Don’t go out for anything,” Maeral urged her.
“Understood babae.” She rushed inside, locking the doors as she went. When she got into the apartment, Anayra looked up, smiling and then frowning as Fenara slammed the door shut and bolted it, pulling the chain across the door, and then their spare security bar.
“Fenara, what’s the matter?”
“Jethan got out of the reservation. Where’s my brother?”
“Helping Lily with her homework, what-“
“Lock everything,” Fenara growled, huddling in the corner of the futon she slept on.
“Fen, he won’t come here. He doesn’t even know where we live!” Anayra said soothingly, sitting next to her sister-in-law.
“How do we know that!” Fenara whispered, fighting back the urge to cry. Her cellphone started going off again, making her jump. She checked the number, and ignored the call. Eolas Books. Now was not the time for a friendly chat. “He could be tracing my cellphone again! He could have been watching me! He might know what license plate my vespa is!”
“Shhhh, Fen, shhh,” Anayra whispered, stroking Fenara’s hair as the woman started to break, shaking violently. “Everything will be fine. Just relax.”
Fenara shook her head and started fiddling with a long necklace around her neck, adorned with tiny beads that represented the Creators, rubbing her fingers frantically over their etched surfaces. “He’s going to be angry. He’s going to be very angry,” she squeaked, her voice barely audible over the sound of the futon shaking. “Oh Creators why did I leave?”
“Don’t talk like that Fen. You know why you left,” Doron said harshly, walking into the room, Lily trailing behind him. “That man is the slime of the earth.”
“I know, but-“
“Just relax. Try and get some sleep,” Doron said, handing her the little pill bottle that held her emergency anxiety medication. Fenara took it with shaking hands, and gulped them down quickly, huddling herself in the corner of the futon, holding her legs close to he body. Doron turned to his daughter.“Lily, go to bed early. Make sure everything’s shut tight, okay?”
“Yes Babae,” Lily answered, walking into her room and shutting the door.
“Please turn out your light early as well,” he shouted after her. “We’re staying dark tonight.”
“I understand!”
The tiny apartment went dark as Doron and Anayra turned in for the night, locking their windows securely, Fenara falling asleep on the futon, still clutching her necklace in her hand.
Lily woke to the sound of tinkling glass, her vision blurred with sleep as she looked up into her brightly lit computer screen, her math homework still sitting half finished in her lap. She turned to the window, confused at the dark figure crawling through it.
Consciousness shot through her like lightning as she screamed, her ex-uncle’s angry eyes looking straight at her.
Jethan had climbed up the fire escape, peering into each window until he had found hers, lit up like a Satinalia tree, the blue light falling over her face. A perfect identification. Now he stood tall in her room, backing her closer and closer to the wall.
“Lily, darling, where’s your aunt, huh? Where’s my wife?” he hissed. Lily cringed. His breath smelled like stale cigarettes and cheap vodka.
“Sh-she’s not h-here,” she stuttered, her arms starting to shake.
“You know I can tell when you lie, da’lan,” Jethan laughed. “Where is she?”
“She’s not he-“ She was cut off as Jethan slammed the back of his hand into her face, sending her sprawling to the floor. Lily screamed again and crawled hastily under her bed, trying to escape her deranged relative.
“Lily? Lily! What’s wrong!”
Muffled voices were yelling outside the door, the handle turning. Jethan smiled, his visage dark and menacing.
Fenara had woken up at Lily’s first scream, scrambling towards the hall closet and shutting herself inside, her hands gripping her cellphone desperately, her hands shaking. He was here. Some how, the bastard had found her again. This time he was likely to kill her. Wasn’t that what her therapist said? A man who was as violent as Jethan wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
She tried to dial the police, her fingers shaking too much to press the buttons. Lily screamed again, and she could hear pounding on the door. She had to call someone. Anyone. Someone who knew where she lived and could get the police there.
Solas.
She only had to hit the same button three times to call him back, and then all she had to do was talk. Her thumb twitched and navigated into the call. It rung twice before Solas’ sleepy, concerned voice answered.
“Fenara? What’s wrong it’s the middle of the–“
“Solas, Jethan is here. I need you to get the police. He’s in my home, Solas!” she whispered, her voice starting to turn into a panicked yell.
“Jeth- Your ex-husband?”
“Please Solas!” she said quickly, shrinking back into the closet as footsteps neared her location. “Hurry!”
“I’ll be right there. Fenara-“ There was a crash over the line, and the phone dropped, clattering on the floor loudly. Solas jerked away from the ear piece as it echoed in his ear, quickly pulling a pair of pants on and throwing on a shirt, grabbing his cycle helmet as her screams echoed through the house.
“Jethan! Jethan please! NO!” The ringing slap was almost as loud as her shriek of pain.
He was already dialing as he climbed onto his bike, revving the engine dangerously and speeding off, leaving tire tracks in the alleyway behind the store, flattening himself against the handlebars, begging, willing himself to go faster. He had to get to Lowtown before something even worse happened.
“Nine-One-One what’s your emergency?” the operator said, the line finally answering.
“I’m currently on my way to an apartment on Pine Street. An apartment was broken into and I believe my friend is in serious danger,” Solas growled, taking turns faster and faster as the night split with the roar of the engine.
“Sir, what apartment is it?”
“39 Pine Street, unit 6.”
“Sir, are you sure there has been a break in there? We haven’t recorded any disturbances from the neighbors–“ the operator paused and there seemed to be a conversation going on. Solas skidded to a halt in front of the building, kicking the bike into a park as a gruff voice sounded on the other end.
“Sir, this is Detective Fehron Charger. There will be units on the scene in less than 5 minutes. I’m taking this case personally.”
“I’m going in there.”
“Normally I’d tell you not to, but lives may be at stake here. Thank you for this information.”
“Thank you.”
Solas pushed through the front door, racing up the stairs. He could hear the sound of furniture being pushed around, a glass breaking, or maybe a lamp. He took the stairs two, three at a time, slamming into the door. It was locked tight.
“Nara!” he shouted, slamming into the door with his shoulder. He could hear someone fighting with the locks as he backed up again, slamming against it one last time, feeling the wood give way as the locks that weren’t undone sheered right out of the cheap lumber.
Jethan had Fenara by the throat, a kitchen knife pushed against the pale skin as it practically glowed in the moonlight streaming through one of the windows. Her face was bruising heavily, blood pouring out of her nose and down her shirt. She was gasping, fighting to breath as he pushed the knife harder and harder against her neck. Jethan jerked her back violently, causing her to scream in pain.
“Who’s this Nara? Well you no good whore?”
“Leave her alone,” Solas hissed, narrowing his eyes. Anayra was cradling the head of her unconscious husband, eyes darting around the room like a frightened hare, Lily pushed almost flush against the wall next to the door.
“Make me.”
Solas grabbed one of the broken lamps nearby, using it as a stave to knock Jethan’s hand away from Fenara’s throat. She fell hard, tears mixing with the blood as she landed on her feet, her legs giving out from under her as one of them shifted, ostensibly broken.
“I said leave her alone,” Solas threatened, pushing the sharper end of the pole towards Jethan’s face. Jethan lunged at Solas, before being knocked sideways by a thunderous punch as Solas laid him out flat on the ground, shaking his hand out. He could hear sirens, and the sound of booted feet slamming up the stairs. Jethan groaned pitifully. Solas spat in his direction and half jogged, half dove for Fenara, holding her up. “Nara. Fenara! It’s ok. It’s over,” he whispered, brushing her hair back. She was sobbing, tears welling out of the eye that had swollen shut, clutching herself to his chest like a frightened child. “It’s okay.”
He looked up as a large qunari man pushed through the door, several other police officers behind him. Jethan was handcuffed and dragged off quickly, stretchers coming up the stairs from ambulances. She sniffed, and buried her face against his chest, still crying. “It’s all over.”

One More Step
@silent-of-spirit
Fenara/Solas • Eolas Books • 6 months after the break in • Lily’s 17th Birthday
A continuation of Come In To The Party
“Miss Lavellan, would you like to dance?”
Fenara felt her legs lock up, rooting her to the spot which she stood. Panic rose in her chest, threatening to choke her. It’s just another step, she told herself. It’s just another step to getting away from Jethan, and the hell that her marriage had been. Just one more step.
“S-sure,” she stuttered, slowly reaching her hand out. Solas actually looked shocked, but took her hand carefully, almost tentatively. She fought the urge to wince, taking a careful step and letting him lead her towards the outside of the crowd that was mashed together in a cleared section of the book shop. She could almost hear some of the gasps from her family, and the quiet whispers as someone messed with the stereo, putting on a slower song.
“I’m sorry,” Solas whispered, keeping his hands on her arms. “I should have been more considerate.”
“It’s okay,” Fenara whispered back, looking at the floor. “I–“ she paused, collecting herself, “–I’m sorry I ran away.”
“I understand why you did,” Solas answered, lifting her chin. He immediately dropped his hand back to her elbow, turning her slowly around, “I don’t blame you. I was too forward.”
“Solas–“
The music cut out and there were cheers as Liahra and Brionna wheeled out the cake from the backroom, the crowd breaking into a dissonant rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ as Lily was shoved towards the cake, grinning widely. Fenara laughed and clapped her hands as the room filled with applause as Lily blew out the candles. Slices were passed around, the room descending into conversation and low music.
Solas found himself backed into a corner next to Fenara, watching her laugh as Lily made her way over, dragging her boss with her. Grace was a bubbly redhead, chatting ainimatedly with Fenara about the family, asking questions and making sure everything was going well at home. Fenara was relaxed, grinning from ear to ear as she described the new apartment they’d moved into.
She was in the middle of describing the neighborhood when the crowd pushed back against her, throwing her off balance, falling straight into Solas’ chest, both plates of cake smashing in spectacular style into his shirt and face.
Lily fought her laughter as Solas wiped cake from his eyes. Fenara looked horrified, her hands freezing in place on his shoulders, almost worried about what would happen. How he would react.
“Oh Creators, I’m so sorry! I should have been more careful, I should–“ she started stuttering as Solas peeled the paper plates off his shirt. Her eyes widened as he started to laugh.
“Fen, it’s not a problem!” he laughed, walking toward the back room. She followed him.
“I should at least help you clean up. I feel so bad about this,” she said, shutting the door behind her. Solas looked back at her as she ducked under the cabinet, pulling out a roll of paper towels.
The party was muffled, the sounds hardly penetrating the thick walls. They were alone.
“What a mess,” she muttered, wiping chunks of cake off of his shirt.
“It’s alright. It’ll wash,” Solas chuckled, taking a step back. He peeled off the shirt and wiped frosting off of his face. Fenara’s cheeks burned, dragging her eyes across his bare chest. He still had some remnants of cake on his face.
“Come here,” she whispered, walking over to him. He sat down on a chair as she licked the paper towel, wiping away at the sugary confection. He smiled as she delicately wiped at his cheeks, shutting his eyes as she fussed over him.
“All clean?” he asked, finally opening his eyes. He was smiling at her. Fenara froze.
One step at a time.
She shut her eyes almost frowning as she deliberated with herself. Solas raised his eyebrow, wondering what was wrong.
“Fena–“
She pushed forward, catching his lips with hers, her eyes screwed shut in determination. Solas stiffened, surprised. Voices in his head screamed at each other, some celebrating, some trying to process the event.
As fast as she had kissed him, she stopped, pulling away, her head hanging as she stared at the floor. Her hands were shaking on his shoulders. It took him a moment to realize that she was fighting the desire to cry.
“I-I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.” she sniffed, letting go of his shoulders and starting to stand up. Solas felt his heart rise to choke him, as he grabbed her wrists, pulling her back into his arms.
He was kissing her. He was kissing her, surrounded by the scent of vanilla icing, spicy perfume, and the scent of her shampoo. He cupped her cheeks with his hands, fingers tangling in her hair and pulling her closer, wanting to bask in the moment forever as she– she kissed him back, with as much passion, her hands still shaking as they gripped his shoulders. He moved an arm to her waist, and was rewarded by her not flinching or shying away from his touch as he pulled her closer, still kissing her.
“FUCKING FINALLY!”
They broke apart, Fenara turning hastily towards the door, where Lily stood, looking smug, and Bull was laughing, smiling widely with his arm around Liahra.
“We’ve been waiting for you two to finally kiss,” Liahra laughed, resting her head against Bull. Behind them Anayra and Doron looked like they were about to cry, smiling proudly.
“LILY!” Fenara groaned, backing off of Solas quickly and pressing herself against the counter.
“What? You two were taking too long. It is my party, remember?” Lily giggled. She winked saucily at Fenara. “If you two are done necking–“
“Lily…”
“–then we can cut you guys another slice of cake, and I can open presents,” Lily laughed, ignoring her aunt’s threatening tone. “Take your time… we’ll leave you alone for now,” she laughed, walking off, letting the door swing shut.
Fenara’s cheeks were bright pink with embarrassment as Solas stood up, shaking his head in amusement.
“Rotten little brat,” Fenara cursed, spitting the words in annoyance. Solas tilted her face back up to him, smiling fondly. “I’m sorry about her.”
“I’m not.”
He kissed her again, delicately, softly, feeling the silken surface of her skin against his fingers, pulling away to smile at her, losing himself in her eyes.
“She did say take our time,” Fenara laughed, hopping up on the counter.
“We have plenty of time vhenan,” Solas sighed, pulling her into a hug. “But, we should get back to the party. It is Lily’s birthday after all. She only turns seventeen once.”
“You’re right,” she whispered, nuzzling against his chest. “But first, we should find you another shirt.”
One step at a time.

@thevikingwoman replied to your post:
Garden’s List of OCs (and their relationships)
Hey Garden. I’m trying to figure out what Lily and Fenera’s background is in arbitrary decisions AU, and where Grace fits in? (sorry. I’m impressed with all these worlds :P )
The reason it’s called the Arbitrary Decisions AU is because Grace decides to go to Therinfal and NOT the Conclave :)
Fenara is Lily’s Father’s sister (Lily’s Biological Aunt). Lily’s father dies in the Conclave Explosion, and Lily’s Mother dies in Haven (the same as in my Canon Universe). Fenara becomes Inquisitor, since Grace is not present at the conclave.
Grace comes in during the Arbitrary Decisions AU as the de facto leader of what remains of the Templar Order (Outlined in Part 4 of Stained). She settles into Skyhold and enters a polyamorous relationship with Cullen and Barris. She is the one who starts the hunt for Solas after the Exalted council at Fenara’s request. I haven’t quite worked out how she ends up adopting Lily, but it happens.
All of Lily’s story has currently been written or the Canon story, so if you want to ask for some later Arbitrary AU stuff between Fenara, Solas, and Lily, feel free :D
[In the Canon Storyline, Fenara AND Doron Lavellan die in the Conclave Explosion, Grace becomes Inquisitor, and Lily is fully orphaned after Haven.]
