when he pushes against her grip, she pushes back, forcing his wrists to remain braced against the wall. at least having burned off the worst of her temper already, she can recognize now that he's just trying to provoke her again. it's easier to just scoff, rolling her eyes. " oh, i'm tired, party boy --- " she grits out, glaring at him, " i'm absolutely tired of your bullshit. " blue eyes narrow at that smile, barely restraining the impulse to make another attempt to wipe it off his face entirely. it's an effort to convince herself to take a deep breath and step back from him instead, irritation already mounting again despite their first round. her words are cold as one hand comes to brace against her hip. " i think you've had enough fun tonight, " she counters, " the car is out front. " her gaze flicks between him and the door expectantly, though she's surely not lucky enough for it to be so simple.

she’s already pissed that he’s run off again on his own,   forcing her to track him down for what must be the millionth fucking time at this point.   thankfully she has enough friends and contacts around the city to put together the trail in a decent amount of time.   when she arrives on the scene,   the now-familiar curse of spoiled fucking party boy is muttered under her breath.   a commotion in the crowd immediately draws her attention,   shoving through the gathering observers to find none other than her assignment throwing down with some other party-goer.   her hot anger turns FRIGID as she whips out a badge announcing herself and demanding the crowd back off while forcing herself between said spoiled fucking party boy and his would-be opponent,   who scampers off at the sight of her badge.   another glare is given to the crowd,   who collectively have enough sense to disperse at the combination of her badge and expression.   

finally,   hard gaze lands on him,   her own temper rising to meet his as they glare at each other for a second.   she doesn’t even remember their venomous words,   or who moved first,   but they pick up where he’d left off with the drunken idiot from earlier.    and fuck,   if it doesn’t feel good.   an outlet,   at last,   for every aggravation he’s caused since she was assigned this fucking detail.   she catches herself smiling at one point as she ducks under his arm,   a laugh breaking through despite her ragged breathing.   she realizes how insane this is;   to be actively trying to beat the shit out of the person she’s charged with protecting,   but clearly someone needs to knock some SENSE through that thick skull of his.   and with what she walked up on,   she can’t help thinking maybe he needed this,   too.   

she manages to corner him into the wall,   taking the opportunity to push him back against it,   finally using a bit of her training to use her weight and pin him like she might if she were about to arrest him,   though he’s facing her rather than the wall and she’s got her hands wrapped around his wrists at either side of his head.   not exactly the usual immobilization tactic,   but effective enough.   there’s nothing but their breathing for a moment,   heavy with all the exertion.   her smile is gone,   nothing but steely challenge in its wake as she meets his gaze intently:   “   are you DONE?   ”

a snort that is by no means ladylike escapes her as she glances over to the boastful man.   “   at least someone is enjoying themselves at this event.   ”   she can’t help her genuine smile,   amused as she is by such open proclamation in apparent disdain of the rules of honor that they’ve all agreed to for some forsaken reason.   “   there’s no need to rub the noses of those of us less fortunate than you second sons in your merriment,   though.   ”    taking a sip of her lemonade to cover her amusement,    she glances towards the aforementioned heir,    still being accosted by an entire host of mothers shoving their daughters in his face.   thankfully,   her mother had not yet been so desperate as to drag her around the room and shove her in the face of any bachelors,   she’s not entirely sure she could help herself in causing a scene if she so much as tried.   perhaps her mother knew that and that’s why she had refrained.
