Long-Tailed Feelings and Regency Fairy Tales
Tumblr media
Olivia Atwater's Half a Soul was an absolutely fascinating combination of everything I loved about Regency romance and all the best bits of fairy tales. There are no "candy floss fairies" here; the fae are threatening, dangerous, and genuinely terrifying if you land on the wrong side of them. Let's talk Dora and Elias.
Unquestionably, the best part of this book is the unconventional protagonists. For everyone who thought "Mr. Darcy was cool, but make him GRUMPIER," I give you Elias Wilder, the Lord Sorcier. Elias is rude, curt, and utterly fails to suffer fools for longer than 0.0001 milliseconds. Balance that against actual brilliance, a very deeply buried squishy center, and an infallible moral compass, and he is one of the more interesting, prickly, and weirdly endearing love interests I've seen in a while.
Opposite Elias is Theodora "Dora" Ettings, who had half her soul stolen by a fairy when she was a child. He'd have gotten her whole soul, except that her cousin stabbed the fairy with a pair of iron bird scissors that Dora subsequently wears around her neck. The very cool thing about Dora is that after half her soul is stolen away, she only feels, as she describes them, "long-tailed feelings." This causes her all sorts of grief socially, and her mother and aunt never truly accept Dora as she is. The incredible thing is that Dora herself DOES. She is given the opportunity to reunite the two halves of her soul in adulthood, and doesn't do it. So I am here for and love a protagonist who owns how awesome she is.
Elias and Dora are what I would call an unconventional pair, but that quote simply makes them more interesting to watch. I highly recommend this regency fantasy fairy tale romance, and I cannot wait to read the next two in this trilogy!

“If you were a gentleman, Elias, you would offer her your coat. I’m sure the lady must be quite chilled.”
Elias glanced away from both Dora and his friend Albert, his inquiry about the mirror suddenly forgotten. “You are perhaps the only man who might accuse me of being a gentleman without being turned into a frog,” he told Albert acidly. “Take back that awful insult, before I think of an alternative animal.”
I've recently read Half A Soul and gobbled that book up so quickly! It was such a fun read~
Elias and Albert's relationship and friendship is so dear to me I'll actually disintegrate so you know I had to sketch them✍️
Might clean this up later who knows👁👁

Watched Kamen Rider ZO last night so have a doodle and some random thoughts on it below the cut
Tumblr media
(tldr I recommend it if you like some classic rider vibes and super cool kaijin suits. But also it's only 50 min long and free to watch on youtube (at least in the usa) so why not watch it)
First of all incredible kaijin suits and designs. I don't know if it's the movie budget or what but they look soooo good. Especially Doras he is probably my favorite Kaijin design period.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love the biomechanical aspects, him regenerating is just the coolest shit
The bat and spider designs are also really good, and I LOVE the stop motion they chose for the spider. Superrrr unsettling. Also the bat does the funny Pan's Labyrinth thing lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The movie also had a lot of nice cinematography. The opening shot with Masaru in the wilderness seeing visions with the music box playing in the background gives this beautiful tragedy vibe, same with the flashback of him first transforming in the rain. Helps to make you invested in him given that he doesnt get much other characterization (which is fine it is only a 50 min movie after all)
Tumblr media
There's some cool pov chase scene shots when Doras is in ball form, Doras's introduction scene is really cool and menacing, the action in general is pretty nicely shot with like a minute long continuous action scene towards the end of the movie that goes hard.
I also really liked the music in the movie. The insert song and credits song by INFIX are both bangers (especially Ai Ga Tomaranai). I also just like the trumpet heavy Showa style songs on general I think, and when the organ or electric guitar start going 👌 chefs kiss. During battle there were also like videogame-y sounding songs that reminded me of like Persona 2 for some reason that I liked a lot.
The plot and characters are pretty standard but they serve their purpose in the movie well enough given the runtime. No big complaints here.
Tumblr media
I don't know if the point of Doras mimicking Hiroshi is to say something about how "All creations crave love from their parents" or something or if they just thought it'd be creepy but either way it's cool. It definitly seemed jealous of Hiroshi's relationship with his father, but it could've also just been frustration at not being completed.
But yeah really enjoyed the movie, might bump Shin prologue and J higher in priority in the watch queue because of how much I liked it👍

you're the expert and i don't know how else to find out: there a lot of aus I've seen repeatedly on pixiv, and i can't tell if they're just very popular fan aus or inspired by things in canon: one where draluc is in a bunny ears+waiter outfit and ronaldo in a suit with glasses, then one where they're both missing an eye and everything looks more fighty. Where did these come from??
I don't know if I'm an expert, but I'll definitely share what I've learned!
I will disclose that most of the information I have is second-hand from other sources + my own interpretations. So please don't take anything I say as cold hard fact; i'm sure I'm getting a bunch of little details mixed up
The Bunny!Draluc and Glasses!Ronaldo one is based off Chapter 227, which is basically a retelling of a collection of fairytales, except it's Kyuushi, so silly things happen
Ronaldo in Glasses is based off the Japanese fairytale of Kintarou, a story about a guy who grew up in the wilderness among animals and nature, who is brought back into society to get an office job, and ends up using his new wealth and executive power to stop his company from tearing down the mountain that he grew up at.
Bunny!Draluc is based off the Tortoise and the Hare story, where Draluc is the hare and John is the tortoise. But instead of racing, Draluc just spends his time doting on John and gushing about how cute he is (As he should ^^)
There's not much canon information about them besides that, but I believe the Kintarou and Bunny AU got put together mainly cuz they appeared in the same chapter, and also that Bonnoki might have done some account-jack/white day tweets that paired them up?
The most common fanon interpretations I've seen of them (or at least my understanding/personal headcanon of it) are that Draluc works as a bunny in an establishment (wink wink) where one can pay the hosts for goods and services (wink wink), and the prices Draluc charges for his goods and services are extremely high, and most people can't afford him/don't wanna deal with him cuz he's kinda annoying lol. But not only can newly-rich wild man Kintarou!Ronaldo pay his outragous price, he will pay his outrageous price, and then some.
Ronaldo is very light-hearted, kinda simple-minded, and naive in this AU. Very much a person who grew up surrounded by animals and is now being subjected to the weirdness of human society, but he has taken a fancy to the vampire dressing up as a bunny. But since there's not a lot of canon info on this AU outside of the short sections in the chapter, there's a lot that's left up to personal interpretation. Above is just what i kinda tend to see the most
I'm assuming the "missing eyes" one you're talking about is the Inverse/Inverted AU. This one is also based on a chapter in the manga (chapter 189) where everyone except Draluc gets hypnotized by vampiric butterflies to essentially flip their personality.
So Ronaldo, who's typically very brash, rude, arrogant, and punch-first-ask-questions-later, is inverted to instead be very polite, soft-spoken, dainty, lady-like, and prefers to talk down opponents over tea and cakes rather than get violent (Though a lot of people including myself like to also headcanon that Inverse!Ronaldo is a sadist, though this has no canon basis other than the fact that Rona tends to showcase some very masochistic tendencies in canon, and so the inverse of that would be...)
I'm not sure if this is canon to the chapter or just super popular fanon, but because Inverse!Rona is so lady-like and shoujo-esque, Rona's referred to a lot by feminine pronouns
Draluc didn't get hypnotized in this chapter, and therefore did not get an inverted personality. However, sometime later, Bonnoki posted a couple of drawings of what Inverted!Draluc would look like, including white hair, a prosthetic eye, and a rapier sword. Fan interpretation writes Inverse!Draluc as more of an introvert than Canon!Dora; for the most part, he's still polite, but in an "honorable swordsman" kinda way; he's a little more brash, rude, and unafraid to get into a fight than he is in canon.
According to Bonnoki, Inverse!Draluc cannot truly exist because he violates the Dora Dora Compliance Rule, which basically states that no matter what timeline, world, or AU, Draluc must always be weak and die in no time. I'm assuming it's because of the scar over his eye and his fake eye that Bonnoki brought this up, because him having a scar would imply that he merely sustained injury instead of outright dying.
Speaking of Draluc's different colored eye/scar: as far as I'm aware, there's no canon event known that caused the eye trauma. Apparently, before more info was written for Inverse!Draluc, there was a good chunk of the fanbase that headcanoned that Inverse!Ronaldo removed one of their eyes to give to Draluc. But it was later confirmed that Draluc's eye is a prosthetic with ice powers
(which got me hmming and hawwing that maybe Northdin got something to do with that? Hmm? Hmmmmmmm? Maybe something bad happened during Draluc's apprenticeship and Northdin had to do what he could to save his student hmmmmmmm--)
Bonnoki states that Inverse!Draluc is just as weak as Canon!Draluc and can die/revive, but there was also something he said that stated that he has no regenerative powers, which kinda confuses me. A good chunk of the fandom, myself included, have kinda just.. ignored that "he's just as weak as canon" part lol. My personal headcanon is that while he is still pretty physically weak, Inverse!Draluc is wicked good at swordfighting and actually has a fairly good handle on his vampire abillties; but if he dies, he'll die for good.
I've read somewhere that Inverse!Draluc is supposed to be Draluc just cosplaying and that's why he's as weak as he is in canon despite everything pleading to the contrary, but I don't know if this is true or not.
Idk idk, I just have a lot of thoughts about Inverse; it's one of my favorites :>
And if the Inverse AU wasn't the one you were talking about with "missing eyes", then... i'm sorry, I'm afraid i don't know what you're referring to D: Maybe Uso?
Idk. I need to get to sleep now lol. I hope this helped!

Do the other queen know what happened to Didyme?
• — 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚 & 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰?
The short answer; Yes and no.
Right after Didyme’s death there was no reason to doubt either Caius or Aro, for their grief and shock at the incident was genuine. The way they took care of Marcus afterwards, was genuine. Aro was in shambles and Caius powered on as their general the same way he always did when grief hit them. The remaining royals grieved together until they could speak Didyme’s name without a lump in their throats; and life continued on.
But Aro and Caius did not marry two fools without a thought in their head, Sulpicia can be just as crafty and Athenodora inquisitive without a fault. It took many years, but they did begin to wonder.
I do believe Caius may have confessed something to his wife late one night when they were alone in the wilderness, for there was a periode when Dora was more cross towards him than usual. However, I do believe she would come to understand why he helped Aro. Caius never specified what he had done, but a near silent ‘forgive me’ slipped past his lips, and Athenodora just knew.
Sulpicia came to the conclusion quietly over the years, she saw the change in Aro no matter how many masks he hid behind. And if her husband ever saw the accusation in her thoughts he quietly shelved them for another time, though it never did. Sulpicia grieved once more, for Aro, for Didyme, for all of them.
What happened to Didyme is an open secret among the royals, the only one who ever confronted Aro about it was Marcus.
Aro has yet to pay his debts.

I read Olivia Atwater’s  REGENCY FAERIE TALES series over the weekend and enjoyed them so much I was compelled to doodle some fanart for them. If you enjoy books like HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, STARDUST, or anything written by India Holden, I would recommend giving these a read! (Her website also has short stories from this universe)

What if i rewrote Dora and Friends into the City?
Why am i once again rewriting another nick.jr show when i barely scratched the surafce about what i have for Team Umizoomi
Now this basically takes a what if dora and the lost city of gold were put in into the city but instead of finding the lost city, I take Dora's fish out of the water personality and make her deal with moving into a new place more seriously.
Her parents likely already had a job in the city but wanted to wait until Dora was old enough to move there. And rewatching "Return to the Rainforest" i was like
"nuh uh it isn't THAT EASY to return to an almost enchanted talking forest with a bunch of things actually alive nope it would take an airplane and boat to get there"
Like okay, whatever the hell is going on in the Rainforest is likely not well known around the world, and is mostly that for an important reason. My memory doesn't serve as a great tool for writing this but i do remember that a decent amount of humans do live there, Dora included.
So it's likely a hidden society, maybe Dora's parents wanted to adventure out more into the world thus why they wanted to move in the first place? Wanted to give their children more room to do adventures in?
I'm getting ahead of myself.
Basically the story starts off with the Marquez family moving boxes into their van or vehicle, Dora looking the way she is in the series(she's probably 13 at this point), with all of the characters from the original at the house just finishing their Goodbye party for Dora. One tearful goodbye speech and promising to try and visit from Dora and Boots later(because i don't have the heart to describe it at the moment), they began their trip to the City.
I'm not sure if Diego is in the series so I'll leave Dora to be alone in the first few days, only having her family with her.
First day of school, Dora does get a good positive reception from her classmates, but from personal experience that doesn't mean everyone is her friend right away, and a few bad moments of feeling like she doesn't belong, she tries to run away(hehe impulsive decisions done on a whim)
Pablo in the series is just- the boy of the group, And likes soccer. It's i guess...fine? But i know there's more to add to that.
So he's Dora's first friend, and was the one to prevent her from actually leaving the city.
Maybe he's also very adventurous, but over time he begins to doubt his survival abilities? He's been housed in a city life that i feel like he wouldn't adjust to the change of the hardships in surviving out in the wilderness.(Might change these parts, basically summary he does want an adventure but doubts in himself alot from going to far out)
I see one scene of Pablo guiding Dora into a personal spot that he found while he was adventuring far out from his comfort zone, and maybe then they'd form a connection, Dora helping and encouraging Pablo to be brave in his skills and Pablo helping Dora by just... being there for her. They are besties
I imagine that each of the friend group will form over time, with each friend getting introduced and fleshed out in their own time. I want to explore Dora and Pablo and see how they'd bounce off of each other. The rest of the girls will be explored when i get a bounce of ideas-
And when the friend group does eventually form, then it's the City's turn to get explored.
Because like the rainforest i want to make the city itself interesting. And with someone like Dora, she's bound to uncover it's secrets.
Look the mental image of her friends just having an existential crisis over Dora's findings and shenanigans is going to be fun.

Hungry Ghosts of Starvation Heights
The community of Olalla is just across the Puget Sound from Seattle. Olalla means "berry" in the local tribal language, and the area is well known for its strawberries, which are celebrated in festivals during which people overindulge in berry-laden cuisine. Strangely, this same community was also once the place where people came to starve their way to health-and sometimes to death. All with the help of a self-proclaimed doctor named Linda Burfield Hazzard, whose starvation cure may have been most effective in producing a ghost or two.
Hazzard turned her Olalla cottage into the Wilderness Heights Sanitarium, and from the 1890s until 1912 she rented the attic to patients who had come to experience her cure. She was not a medical doctor, but practiced a form of homeopathy. She wrote a book, titled Fasting for The Cure of Disease, in which she declared that her treatment could cure everything from cancer to constipation. The treatment? Patients ate one small bowl of tomato or asparagus soup daily, for over forty days. Long walks, enemas, and vigorous message were also required one or more times a day.
Following this regimen, patients inevitably grew thinner and weaker. They were free to leave Wilderness Heights if they wanted to, but Hazzard and her fasting cure exerted a strange power over them. Local farmers watched the patients took daily from the cottage to the store and back. These walks soon became daily "crawls" as the patients' energy dissipated and they slowly faded away.
There were patients who survived and left Olalla, but many died. How many is not known: Estimates range from two dozen to over forty, possibly higher. Hazzard seldom filed death certificates with authorities, and had a special arrangement with a discreet funeral home in Seattle for burials. Conveniently for Hazzard, most of the patients who died left all their property to her. Few knew that her husband Sam had been kicked out of the U.S. Army for forgery and embezzlement.
In 1911, British heiress Claire and Dora Williamson came to Wilderness Heights to take the cure. Both lost more than fifty percent of their body weight and while Dora survived, just barely, Claire died. Someone had also embezzled money from the sisters' bank accounts. The British Consulate went after Hazzard, filing criminal charges against her, and she was found guilty of manslaughter. She spent less than two years in prison, lived briefly in New Zealand, then returned to Olalla in 1920, where she built a larger sanitarium and nursing home. This time, however, local authorities made sure that none of her patients experienced the same fate as the Williamsons.
It's hard to tell whether Linda Hazzard set out to murder her patients. When rich people (with no relatives) began to sicken from the treatment, Sam and Linda may have decided it was best for business to take over their dying patients' estates. She may not have understood the consequences of her actions. She firmly believed in her fasting cure, and that people died only because they were only beyond help. The proof? Hazzard became ill in the 1940s and died while taking her own "cure."
The cottage, also known as "Starvation Heights," where Hazzard established her sanitarium changed very little over the years, and the family living there before it was torn down experienced some ghostly phenomena. On one occasion, the woman of the house was in the kitchen cooking dinner. She was facing the stove, which was against one wall, and the bathroom door was behind her. She moved back and forth between a counter on her left and the stove for several minutes. When she turned around, she saw that every chair in the kitchen, and a few from the room next door, had been piled up against the bathroom door.
The woman had been alone in the house at the time, and it's doubtful that someone else would have taken the time to sneak in and silently pile all the chairs up against the door while she was making dinner.
In the attic of the cottage, where most of her patients were treated, were several low "ledges" where the family stored small items. A psychic once said that she saw the spirits of many of Hazzard's victims sitting on the ledges, too afraid to move, even in death. The psychic burst into tears several times over the anguish she felt saturating the walls of the little house.
Three times during 2005-2006, Washington State Paranormal Investigations and Research (WSPIR) visited Starvation Heights and Weird Washington spoke to its president, Darren Thompson, about some of the group's experiences there.
The first time they broke into three teams, each of which included a psychic. To keep the destination a secret, they blindfolded the psychics and put them into separate cars. During the drive, technicians sat next to the psychics and recorded with a video camera every action and statement made along the way. En route, two psychics felt as if they would be going to a large institution having something to do with medicine. When they arrived at the cottage, the teams removed the blindfolds from the psychics and kept them from communicating with each other. Each psychic was to go through the house alone.
One team recorded a video that starts inside their car, then pans outside, where the microphone recorded a muffled statement made by a team member. The video then pans back inside the car, where the microphone picked up a strange, breathy voice, saying, "Help me!" The voice could only have come from inside the car and was not made by team members either inside or outside the car.
Another WSPIR team recorded pictures an audio outside the house while walking toward a ravine where Hazzard may have hidden the victims' bodies. Their audio recorder picked up a voice that said, "Are you talking about me now?" The team members did not hear the voice at the time and continued their conversation. Another voice seemed to be saying, "Take us up" or "Dig us up."
During the second investigation, WSPIR learned that the cottage would be torn down once the owners put a new house up on a different part of the property. They quickly organized a third investigation, during which several members spent the night there.
One man tried relaxing in Hazzards' former bedroom the room in which Linda had died. The man never had any psychic experiences before, but he felt as if something spiritual were in touch with him. He went into a trance and answered simple questions with rambles of "yes" or "no" from deep within his chest. It seemed as if he were communicating with Linda Hazzard, who was still in the house. She refused to leave and was refusing to let anyone demolish the dwelling. Her spirit was wrong, however. The family living in the cottage did indeed move, and the cottage was leveled. Was this last communication the result of investigators' prodigious imaginations or a final attempt by the former owner to interact with the world of the living?
The cottage that was once Starvation Heights is now gone, but it isn't known if the spirits detected there-whether they were those Hazzard or her unlucky patients-left with its demolition. It seems that we'll just have to remain hungry for an answer.

Reality? Augmented and Virtual? Pfft, Who Needs That? Just Strap On and Yeet into the Future of Art!
Ladies and gents, dudes and dudettes, gather 'round as we dive headfirst into the glittering, neon-drenched rabbit hole of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) art. Now, I know what you're thinking: “Is this just another Professor Pop fever dream?” Well, buckle up, because we’re about to embark on a wild ride that makes Alice's Wonderland look like a Sunday stroll in the park.
First off, let's talk AR. Imagine if Snapchat filters and Instagram reels had a baby with the art world – a baby that grew up on a steady diet of electric Kool-Aid and superhero movies. AR is all about layering digital funkiness over our humdrum reality. Like, why settle for boring old real-world sculptures when you can whip out your phone and see a 3D model of a T-Rex playing a saxophone right in your living room? Yeet, indeed!
Take, for instance, the glorious insanity of AR installations. Picture this: you're waltzing through a park, minding your own business, when BAM! – you hold up your phone and suddenly you're surrounded by Van Gogh's Starry Night swirling around you. But wait, there's more! Tap your screen and now it's a mash-up with Kanye West’s face superimposed on the stars, each twinkling to the beat of "Gold Digger." AR takes traditional art, dunks it in a vat of pop culture references, and serves it up with a side of “OMG, what even is reality anymore?”
Now, let’s slide into the realm of VR. Oh boy, VR! The lovechild of The Matrix and every sci-fi movie ever, where you strap on those oversized goggles and suddenly you’re not just viewing art, you’re inside it. Yes, my friends, VR is the ultimate “choose your own adventure” book but with fewer words and more chances to walk into walls because you forgot you were in your mom’s basement.
Imagine stepping into a virtual gallery. You're no longer just a casual observer; you're Tony Stark flying through a museum of mind-bending creations. Here, a giant, pulsating jellyfish sculpture floats by. There, an interactive 3D model of a black hole swirls ominously, narrated by none other than Morgan Freeman because, obviously, his voice makes everything 1000% more epic. KA-POW!
Speaking of interactive, let's not forget about those VR art experiences that let you go full-on Bob Ross. Don your VR headset, grab your virtual paintbrush, and get ready to paint some “happy little trees” that you can literally walk around. Or, if you're feeling particularly avant-garde, why not create a VR masterpiece that involves neon cats riding on rainbows while quoting Shakespeare? "To yeet, or not to yeet," that is the question.
But wait, it gets wilder. Remember Pokémon GO? That was just the tip of the AR iceberg. Now, artists are creating mixed reality installations that blur the lines between the digital and the physical. Like, picture an art exhibit where you don AR glasses and suddenly the sculptures around you start talking. Not in a creepy, haunted-house way, but more like, “Hey, you look smashing today! Care to know my history?” It’s like Dora the Explorer meets Night at the Museum, but with a dash of Salvador Dalí.
And because we’re living in the age of TikTok and meme culture, these AR and VR art pieces are designed to be as shareable as possible. Snap a selfie with a digital Mona Lisa that dabs when you say “cheese,” or record a video of yourself dancing through a VR Salvador Dalí landscape, because if it didn’t go viral, did it even happen?
Now, here's the kicker: AR and VR art isn't just about creating mind-blowing visuals. It’s about making science meets art a reality. Literally. Imagine virtual galleries where you can explore interactive 3D models of scientific phenomena. Like, ever wanted to take a stroll through a human cell? Pop on your VR headset and shrink down to microscopic size, Ant-Man style, to wander through a nucleus and high-five some ribosomes. Or how about AR experiences where you can see the constellations mapped out in the night sky above you, complete with animated mythological creatures acting out their tales because plain old stargazing is so last century.
These techy art forms are also breaking down barriers, making art more accessible. You don’t need to travel to a far-off museum or shell out big bucks for an art show. Nope, just plop down on your couch, put on your VR headset, and voila! You’re at an exclusive art exhibit in Paris, sipping virtual champagne and nodding knowingly at pieces you pretend to understand. Très chic!
So, what does this all mean for the future? Will we all become digital art connoisseurs, navigating through a sea of virtual Picassos and AR Pollocks? Probably not. But we will have a heck of a lot of fun pretending. The fusion of AR and VR with art is like throwing a rave in the Louvre – it’s chaotic, exhilarating, and a little bit bonkers.
As we hurtle towards this techy art future, remember to keep your sense of humor intact. Whether you’re exploring a VR art space where kittens in space suits perform Hamlet or you're using AR to turn your living room into a disco with Andy Warhol lookalikes, the key is to embrace the absurdity. After all, if we can’t laugh at the idea of a digital Van Gogh quoting Snoop Dogg while floating above our heads, what’s the point?
So, dear students, go forth and dive into the fantastical world of AR and VR art. Strap on those headsets, fire up those apps, and prepare to be amazed, bemused, and probably a little bit confused. Just remember, when someone asks you what you did today, you can proudly say, “I explored the intersection of science and art in a mixed reality installation where Banksy’s graffiti danced to TikTok tunes.” And if they look at you like you're crazy, just smile knowingly and say, “It was lit.”
