dude. DUDE. I just realized something. I know why Tolkien put the Dead 💀 Marshes in LotR.

Tolkien is from Britain.

Bogs, fens, marshes, wetlands, whatever you want to call them, are in many locations in the British Isles. They sometimes have will-o’-the-wisps, also called jack-o’-lanterns, which are mysterious lights that appear and disappear over the bogs, most likely caused by organic decay and decomposing matter.

The Dead Marshes are a bog that has lights, or flames, caused by dead bodies in the water. So they’re will-o’-the-wisps! Because they’re caused by organic decay.
