Savage God by PottersPink, binding by DCB Bindery
Summary: Past, present, future, Steve knows Bucky Barnes. It’s why he recognized him when he found him in that alley in April of 1942, even though Bucky was older, stronger, wearier; he called himself The Asset, and had a metal fucking arm. He flinched when Steve tried to touch him, and when Steve told him he loved him, his first response was to ask why. The Asset was only with Steve in 1942 for a few days, but it’s enough to change the course of Steve’s life forever; the journey to becoming Captain America is coloured with urgency, with an undercurrent of fear and determination that in the end he just can’t manage to hide from everyone — But it was all for nothing. Steve saves Bucky from Zola, just to lose him on the train. Their second chance, wasted. Seventy years later, Steve wakes up in the twenty-first century, and he doesn’t know whether to be heartbroken or hopeful when some of the things Bucky revealed to him in 1942 start falling into place.
Specs: Square back bradel, red edges, marbled patterned endpapers and endbands, A6, with slipcase.
A gripping read from @potterspink, undoubtedly one of my all time favorites. I’ve revisited this fic over and over again and it is no less satisfying to read each time!
On the process: I knew I wanted to base the design of this binding around a matchbox, and decided to go with Diamond matches. Really liked how it turned out, especially with the striker design on the spine of the book. Had a lot of fun bringing in elements of the story into the slipcase design too, and the slipcase construction was so much simpler and easier than I expected!
I’m quite pleased with the matches marking parts one to three as well, adding a little pop of red that ties everything together. I’m binding three editions of this fic for Binderary so check out the paperback & collector's edition for a more in depth look at the typeset!

oooh can i ask about the non linear idea from your wips? i love a nonlinear narrative! <333
Thank you so much for stopping by, Bri! I would love to talk about this one, even though it's a newer idea. It's sort of a post catws fic, with Sam and Nat helping Steve go hunting for Bucky, but all spliced up with SteveandBucky history.
It's my first time trying something along these lines, and I'm really excited to play around and move the scenes around for highest impact :) Also, like with any new fic of mine, I'm playing around with a flavor of Stevebucky a little to the left of something I've written before!
Here's a bit from 1944:
Steve had always known Bucky loved him. Bucky had made it abundantly clear in his actions, in the kindness of his embraces, in the lightness of his jokes. For Steve, someone who scraped up any love leftover and held it tight, it meant the world. It still meant the world. In Bucky’s eyes was enough love for even Steve to drown in. He loves me in every way the word can be interpreted, Steve thought wonderingly, and then caught Bucky as he tried to run again. “Now you know,” Bucky said jerkily, fighting back like he was drunk or something, swatting halfheartedly at Steve’s arms. “What now, huh, Rogers?” “Bucky.” “Gonna kick me out? Nah, I know you wouldn’t. But I can’t bear your pity, so I think I’ll go anyways, if that’s alright with you. I almost wish you’d just punch me, Steve, honest—” Steve placed his hand on Bucky’s cheek. The rapid fire words faded away. “Don’t leave,” Steve said, quiet.

♥️ 👻 💕 for the wrting ask game? hope you're having a good week!
Hi hi, thank you for the ask! Hope you're having a good week as well :) ❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic?
Oh, god. When I reblogged this game I didn't realize how hard it would be, lol. I don't think I can pick a single line overall, but here's a line(s. Okay, it's a tiny paragraph, sue me) that I like from a chapter about Steve and Bucky in Naples during the war I'm reworking atm:
There has to be a kind of solace in this, he thinks, raw. Some kind of reassurance in the fact that there are things ancient here crumbling away slowly, with a quiet surety; not from senseless violence, just time. That amidst the grief, the stubborn memory of a life lovingly lived prevails.
👻 What is your wildest headcanon?
Aw, fuck, I'm blanking on this. I honestly don't even know what constitutes a wild headcanon, haha. Tbh I feel like there's very little that can surprise me anymore coming from the sprawling tapestry that is the Cap fanon, and my HCs usually fall under the "generally accepted" category so. No clue. The first thing that came to mind in terms of canon fix-its is this vague idea I had about Steve attempting to save Natasha when returning the stones but something going horribly wrong and his body and mind being scattered across space and time like the world's trippiest piñata, and him then having to piece himself together with the eventual help of others. That's not necessarily wild nor a HC though, just an interesting challenge and a way for me to be able to live with canon.
(The second, slightly more amusing thing that came to mind is that at some point in the future Bucky absolutely casually starts ~something~ with Steve at like the Brooklyn Public Library—partly because fine, sue him, he's a sappy bastard and moments of quiet joy together get to him, and partly because he's also an asshole and a riled up embarrassed Steve also gets to him. Which again is not wild at all, just based on the very real life experience of, well. Hearing people fucking at the Brooklyn Public Library, lol.) 💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
My knee-jerk response in terms of prose has to be it's never over (hey, orpheus). Even though I've posted so little of it so far I've been writing it on and off for about 2 years now, it's spawned the two other standalones I've posted, and it's my baby. A baby I am stuck on, constantly banging my head over and changing my mind about every two days as my writing has changed a bit since I started it way back when, but still my baby nonetheless.
But realistically, the work that I actually like the best is the beloved name, exiled. I don't know if that's cheating since it's not exactly prose and has zero functional plot, but it's the only fandom related thing I've ever written so quickly and in such an inspired fury, and I'm actually proud of it still.

A list of underrated fics I adore.
▪️this don’t feel anything like sinking by
@dontcallmebree
A little over six weeks and his knee heals only for his breathing to act up. It may have been a handful of decades—coming up on a century, even—but he never did forget how it felt to wheeze through the night.
Steve sees it coming when Dr. Youssef tells him his lungs are taking a turn.
The year 2032 brings about the Summer Olympics, the coldest winter of the decade, and an end to Project Rebirth.
🔹 Learning to want by @luna-rainbow
Bucky is still trying to piece together his memories, but at least he now had Steve with him.
When Steve asks him if he wanted to meet with his sister, Becca, his response was, "I don't know about wants...I'll start with the shoulds."
Steve and Bucky goes for lunch with Becca. Steve and Bucky dealing with memory loss. Steve and Bucky being mutually pining idiots.
▪️better to speak or die by emilywithoutY (@between-a-ship-and-a-hard-place)
Summers in C. are as endless and hazy as when they were kids. All James wants is to play his part well enough that his mother stops looking at him with that twist of regret in her smile.
The only thing to break the sun-soaked monotony is the arrival of the new summer intern. While the rest of the household—and half the village—fawn over Steve Roger’s movie star looks and understated charm, James finds him aloof and his polite interest near unbearable.
But as they collide in vulnerable moments, the sparks of frustration ignite something neither has the power to stop.
Do you think Jonathan understood what happened that day David first stepped into his father’s court?
🔹The weapon remembers by pushdragon
The Winter Soldier finds old fantasies of Steve in his memory, and takes them for reality.
He's got two days to sort out all his mixed-up history, before he puts himself back in cryo freeze. Harder still, he's got to convince Steve to let him do it.
▪️Preberseeschießen by Ginny_Potter (@hipsterdiva)
Bucky takes his time, ignoring his comrades’ cheering and Gaiswinkler and Mariandl’s teasing. From his position, Steve only has an oblique view of Bucky’s face, which is mostly in the dark anyway – the strong line of his jaw, a smudge of grease on his cheekbone, a sweaty lock of hair curling on his forehead, his mouth pouting in concentration. Steve itches to draw him, to take out his battered sketchbook and reproduce that instant of perfect imperfection. Steve itches to touch him, push back his unruly curls, wipe away the smudge on his cheekbone, cup his face in his hands and…
Bucky breathes out and shoots. The bullet hits water… and there it is, the zapping sound of paper tearing.
The light turns on and off three times. Third circle. Just a lick out of bullseye.
The Howlies explode in cheers.
Or, the Howling Commandos play a shooting game with the Austrian Resistance and Steve has lots of unresolved feelings about himself, his new body, and his changing relationship with Bucky. In other words, comrades are comrades, angst looms, and Steve feels.
🔹Till there were no more wolves in the West
by @dharmasharks
“I’m afraid of a lot of things, Steve,” Bucky says softly.
“But this thing sticking in my heart—the part of me that’s yours? It is the best part of me. Maybe the only good part.” His rueful smile wavers. He makes a pained expression.
“What if it’s the only good part?” he asks.
Two Brooklyn boys find themselves aboard an orphan train headed west in 1854. Across farmland, war, and the lawless frontier, a childhood promise helps them find each other again.
(A Western SteveBucky retelling.)
▪️Hiraeth by ixalit
Hiraeth
noun /ˈhɪraɨ̯θ/
[Welsh] A homesickness or nostalgia, an earnest longing or desire, or a sense of regret. The feeling of longing for a home that never was.
🔹Undone by justanotherStonyfan
You’d think, given everything, that if one of them were going to regress, that if one of them were going to break down, it would be Bucky.
(Set mostly after Endgame - canon deaths remain but Steve doesn't leave)
▪️But You Can Hold Me (Only 'Cause It's a Cold Night in Brooklyn) by Voylitscope_speed (@voylitscope)
This should just be two friends getting off after the burlesque show. This should just be two pals both thinking about the girl. That would probably be okay, Bucky thinks.
But then he ruins it all when he says,
"Come here," and puts a hand out to tug on Steve's shoulder.
(Or: Sometimes, Bucky and Steve lend each other a hand, literally. Bucky tries not to be weird about it, but he's always been bad at controlling his thoughts about Steve.)
🔹Midlife Crisis by profoundalpacakitten
Steve isn’t expecting much of anything from life, he’s content to coast by, letting life flow past. Get up, get dressed, get to work, get home, get to sleep, rinse and repeat.
▪️ The Magic Touch by @broodybuck
The soldier is finally free but he has one big problem, he can't finish. Until he meets a man called Steve who apparently has the magic touch.

July 2024 Reading List
Complete
Donut Forget Our Love (Rated: T, Words: 1K) by dontcallmebree / @dontcallmebree
Summary: Steve Rogers is snoring into his neck. Again. It’s the third time they’ve fallen into bed in the past month alone, and Bucky’s accepted that he’s got a problem. There’s a reason they broke up. Not that Bucky’s been able to remember why lately, with every happy hour that’s gone a little too happy, Steve inching his way across the room and Bucky unable to resist. Tonight, Bucky wishes he had. Bucky gets a little reminder of what his heart has always wanted: a decent bed, bite-sized donuts, and loving Steve Rogers.
I Am Ash From Your Fire (Rated: E, Words: 177K) by lavenderpanic / @lavenderpanic
Summary: Whether they’re making love or Brock’s punching holes in drywall, he just cares so damn much about Bucky. Bucky doesn’t understand why. He’s terrified someday that Brock will grow indifferent, that’s why he feels a rush of relief every time Brock calls him a stupid fucking bitch or slaps him around for screwing something up. He still cares, that’s all Bucky can ever think.
comic books and coffee cups (Rated: T, Words: 4K) by sparkagrace / @sparkagrace
Summary: Based on the prompt: Bucky Barnes is a comic book writer with a very specific idea for a new story, but he hasn't yet found an artist who will work with him on this project. Enter Steve Rogers.
Under His Protection (Rated: E, Words: 21K) by MelanieKS
Summary: There is a nefarious plot brewing in the White House against the president. After an attempt on his life, President Barnes’ detail can’t be trusted and he’s not sure who he can turn to other than his friend Natasha Romanov. Five years retired, Steve Rogers is asked to pick up his shield one last time to protect the president while S.H.I.E.L.D. works on finding the mastermind behind the plot. It’s unconventional, but the safest, while Steve and the president hide away in a secluded cabin in the middle of the mountains of New York. Attraction sparks. Tension rises. Steve vows to keep his distance and remain professional but his attraction grows by the minute, until he can’t deny it any longer.
Podfic
Podfic: Stay and the night would be enough (Rated: T) by ForeverShippingJohnlock
Summary: Written by perfect_plan. Original summary: Things haven't been going well for Steve; he lost his apartment and his job as well as still trying to cope with the death of his mother. Crashing on his friend's couch soon leads to something more for him and Clint's roommate, who shares more with Steve than they both would have expected.
dance with a ghost (Rated: T) by lightupstars
Summary: “Captain America is haunting me,” Bucky says over a bowl of ramen. His pronouncement is met with a round of silence. “Captain America,” Natasha says. “As in--” “The first Avenger,” Bucky confirms. “Supersoldier and hero of World War II. The fabric of the American conscience.” “But he’s--dead,” Sam says. His look of perplexed concern, ever perplexed and ever concerned, only increases. “You’re aware of that, right?” “I know,” Bucky says. “That’s why I said he’s haunting me.”
WIP
War & Peace and the Redemption of Bucky Barnes (Rated: E, Current Words: 44K) by ThePirateStorm / @fsbc-librarian
Summary: Bucky Barnes is running from his problems. He’s housesitting for his best friend while she’s on her honeymoon - the almost a year prior that he’s been staying in her house doesn’t count - when he’s woken in the middle of the night by an angel and a demon. Okay, maybe they’re not a literal angel and demon, but Steve Rogers *looks* like an angel, and his daughter Charli certainly *acts* like a demon. The father/daughter duo are running from their own problems, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t crash headlong into one another’s lives. Throw in a cursed book for good measure, and it’s about to get a whole lot more interesting.
Gold Must Be Tried By Fire (Rated: M, Current Words: 18K) by lavenderpanic / @lavenderpanic
Summary: The pamphlets about escaping abuse always glossed over this part, and Bucky finally understands why. Nobody would fucking leave if they knew how hard recovery would be. In the midst of a trial that questions every hard-won truth out of Bucky's mouth, can he possibly allow himself to heal- physically and mentally? **Sequel to I Am Ash From Your Fire**
Rereads
Heart of Mine (Rated: E, Words: 133K) by deadto27 / @deadto27
Summary: It's been three years since Bucky pulled Steve from the river. Three years where Bucky has tried to get back to the person he was, to be better, to be recovered. Three years where his motivation for getting well has been Steve Rogers. To get to see him again. But when he finally does, he gets more than he expected. Because he never expected that he’d find Steve with a child. And he really never expected that he’d find Steve with his child. ----- “HYDRA…they were using DNA to try to repeat it,” Steve continues softly. “Your DNA,” he adds, meeting Bucky’s eyes, a solemn look on his face as Bucky suddenly catches on to what Steve’s getting at. His eyes widen in shock as Steve increases his grip just slightly on his knee. “The baby…she’s, well…” Steve seems to struggle for words as Bucky’s heart starts beating faster than ever. “She’s yours.”

The Weight of Gold by dreamsinthewitchouse, binding by DCB Bindery
Summary: “The plates around your neck,” the man says. “It’s your name on them, isn’t it? I’ve seen men wear those before.” Steve nods, lifts his hand to his dog tags. “On the boat?” he asks, rubbing the metal between his fingers. The man tilts his head and blinks at Steve, a slightly sad twist to his mouth. “No, Steven. On the bottom of the ocean.”
Specs: Mini binding approx. 30 x 40mm and an A7 square back bradel. Matching marbled patterned endpapers and endbands, star cutout, and gold edges on the A7.
An enthralling mermaid au from @dreamsinthewitchouse that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since I first read it. Such an intriguing and mesmerizing take on these two and their fate!
On the process: Kicking off Binderary with a tiny book that I bound during @renegadepublishing’s mini bind along! I’m quite pleased with how it turned out, especially how the cutout peeks into the marbled endpapers. I can’t emphasize how tiny and cute this book is.
Originally I only wanted to do the mini binding for this fic, but I couldn’t help myself and bound an accompanying regular sized version. Somehow the cutout was much easier on the tiny book, but I did like coloring the edges gold for the bigger version.

i don't even know if this is stucky but i must know more about "bayou hurricane blues 2009" from the wip tag game (if you're up to sharing!) <333
Hi! Thank you for the ask<33 and I absolutely love sharing. Oversharing, even.
It's not stucky - stucky's mentioned, but not the focus. I started it during the CATWS10 event for the Sam prompts, and it was supposed to be just two parallel memories at first: him and Riley on leave having a stupid fun time in New Orleans (Riley gets a tattoo lol) but also discussing doubts about their second tour, and then him and Steve post-WS taking a break from looking for Bucky and having some uncomfortable (but ultimately loving) discussions during the 4th of July.
I couldn't complete it in time, but it's really gotten away from me since. Turned more into Sam's retrospective about different relationships in his life, memories from growing up/pre-CATWS and his feelings about community and purpose and (to a lesser extent) being in the service. Snippet under the cut:
Sam was usually the one jumping in headfirst, and Riley was the one making the sign of the cross Sam'd give him shit for later before jumping right along with him. It's a dizzying reversal. He's not exactly sure what to do with it, and so he says the only truth he can think of. It's a given, really, or it should be: simple enough to fit into words and big enough to break through them, to feel overwhelming and awkward leaving his mouth. "You know I got your back, right? No matter what' you're thinking or what you decide, I got your six." Riley shakes his head, won't meet his eye like it's not the answer he was looking for; like maybe it's the answer he needed to hear the most. "That mean you're my guardian angel, Wilson?" "Hey, you're the one who's got wings scrawled on his ass." He takes a sip from the glass, mulls it around his mouth to buy himself some time like that might help wash out the feeling of being in uncharted waters. Some things never really needed saying between them before, but this is different. "Just means— I hear you, all right. And if you wanna jump ship after this, then yeah. Yeah, I got your back. I've been... I've been sea-sick for a long time, too." Riley's eyes still have that glassy, caught-out look to them, but after a minute his mouth ticks up at the corner. "You're heavy on the metaphors tonight, man." Sam groans. This is what he gets. "Oh, okay—" "No, I mean—it's very romantic, all this. The light, the summer breeze, you waxin' poetry about our camaraderie— you about to drop onto one knee? I mean, I'm pretty sure someone's pissed on this sidewalk more than once, but hell, I'll take it." ""Fuck off, Baker, Jesus Christ," he says, laughing. Safe back in familiar territory. "I'm about to ask for a reassigment is what I'm about to do."

And on my breast you may carve a turtle dove, To signify I died of love.
Tumblr media
This was written as a beyond belated New Year's gift for @kestrafagnor, @amarriageoftrueminds, @16woodsequ, and @dontcallmebree. Without their hilarious input in this post, this fic would never have left my Google Docs.
Link here.
In which, comedy and tragedy are rolled into a one-shot featuring: the bitterly cold Hanukkah of 1944, the Howling Commandos & the Gayest Coverup in Modern History™, a Californian pickpocket, and Steve's dread which only grows as the war progresses and the passage of time steadily brings him closer to losing the man he loves.

Catch up tag
Thank you for tagging me, @somanywords. Always love an excuse to ramble on about things! 💛
Last song I listened to: Weak In Your Light by Nation of Language
Last thing I read: I fell down a Cat Sebastian rabbit hole (all the blame goes to @voylitscope) and read her Cabot Trilogy (mlm romances set in the late 50s to early 70s, mostly in NYC) within a few days. Her books are a little fanfic-y in ways that I find both delightful and frustrating at times, but mostly I'm having a blast. I've now read four of her books and I'm starting to recognize certain recurring patterns when it comes to characterizations and romantic/sexual dynamics, but luckily it's the exact kind of stuff that I like, so I'm not getting bored yet.
Last movie I watched: All of Us Strangers, which worked for me more as an emotional experience rather than a movie, or a coherent story, but I think that was the intended effect. Absolutely phenomenal performance by Andrew Scott.
Last tv show: I'm currently watching Shōgun (excellent in every way) and Fallout (bonkers gory fun), and I finished 3 Body Problem (the good parts were good, the bad parts were almost laughably bad—I'm surprised I made it to the end, tbh). I also tried to watch Manhunt, the limited Apple series about the Lincoln assassination and the hunt for John Wilkes Booth, starring Tobias Menzies. "Tried" being the operative word here. I've made it through 3 episodes and it's just not grabbing me at all. Even worse, some of the narrative choices make me actively angry. I doubt I will continue. Next up: Ripley and yessss, Kings.
Last thing I googled: "iwtv season 2 release date" (It's May 12th!)
Last thing I ate: chocolate cookie
Sweet, salty, or savory: I mean all of them are good but if I have to choose: savory!
Sleep: Would love to get some. Or at least more than 3 hours at a time would be fantastic.
Currently reading: Dreamland by Adam Soboczynski, which I find entertaining as an anecdotal memoir, but I had hoped for more insightful commentary on the cultural tensions between East and West Germany post-reunification as seen through the eyes of a Polish immigrant. But maybe that's just a case of false expectations on my part, rather than a flaw of the book.
And now the awkward part! Honestly, if you read this, consider yourself tagged. I genuinely enjoy hearing about what people read/watch/eat. But ok, I'll play and tag @some-october-in-the-future, @dontcallmebree, @burberrycanary, @thisonesatellite, @latums. No pressure, obviously.
