Something Awesome Proposal
Proposal for my COMP6841 project.
I managed to boot up an old computer I had lying in my closet. It’s still running Windows XP.
What do you want to do?
My Something Awesome proposal is to carry out exploits on this computer (since it’s an old, un-updated Windows XP system with no important data on it, it’s the perfect playground to learn how to hack!).
I’ve been purposefully vague as to what I mean by “exploits” (mainly because I’m still researching what I can do with it). But some ideas (based on my limited research thus far) I have in mind are:
Remote shell access over network
Logging into a user account without password (bypassing authentication)
Denial of service attack (i.e. malicious program that crashes the system)
Running WannaCry on it (dont worry ill be careful)
I may expand/modify this list as I learn more about Windows XP exploits.
Of course, I’ll also blog about the whole thing, describing how I carried out the exploits and how they work.
What do you plan to achieve?
To learn and document how to carry out real exploits on a Windows XP machine.
What skills will you learn?
Hacking (basically)
How to effectively communicate about security vulnerabilities and exploits (the blogging part)
What criteria will you be marked by?
Here is a suggested marking scheme:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fail: Fails to carry out any exploit of a Windows XP system (or has no evidence of doing so)
Pass: Carries out an exploit of a Windows XP system (with evidence) and explains how it works
Credit: Carries out multiple exploits of a Windows XP system (with evidence) and explains how each exploit work
Distinction: Carries out multiple diverse, demonstrably-useful, plausible exploits of a Windows XP system (with evidence), explaining thoroughly how each exploit works
High Distinction: Carries out multiple diverse, demonstrably-useful, plausible exploits of a Windows XP system with all security updates installed (with evidence), explaining thoroughly yet understandably how each exploit works
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to explain the marking scheme:
*******************************************************************************************
Fail is if I don’t do anything (should be self-explanatory).
Pass is if I successfully carry out an exploit of this Windows-XP machine (the “evidence” would be photos/screenshots/video of me actually doing it) and explain how the exploit works (in my blog)
Credit is if I basically do the same thing in Pass, but for multiple exploits (i.e. carry out more than 1 exploit).
Distinction is basically if I do a REALLY good job on Credit. To be more specific:
“multiple diverse“ means I carry out more than 1 exploit, which are all uniquely different to each other. Carrying out multiple exploits that have essentially the same effect (e.g. remote access over network) can get boring; mix it up a little with some different types of exploits; maybe a remote access here, a denial of service attack here, a ransomware there, etc.
“demonstrably-useful“: It should be self-evident how the exploits would be useful to a hacker. When you finish reading my post, I want you to say “Wow, that looks dangerous. I sure am glad I don’t use Windows XP!“. Most importantly, the reader shouldn’t walk away unsure as to what the exploit does or why anyone should care. It should be immediately apparent why the exploit is dangerous and why an ordinary Windows-XP-user would be worried about it.
“plausible“: By “plausible“ I mean that you can realistically see ordinary Windows-XP-users falling for this exploit. If the exploit requires you to have physical access to the machine and already be logged into the user’s account with their password, well, that doesn’t strike me as a particularly realistic scenario. There’s nothing impressive about “hacking“ your own computer when you have physical access to it and are already logged into your account. The exploit has to be something that you can plausibly see an actual attacker carrying out.
The “explaining thoroughly” part just means that the blog post explains in enough detail how the exploit works so as to leave no unanswered questions in the reader’s mind.
High Distinction is basically if I manage to do everything I mentioned in Distinction on a fully-up-to-date Windows XP system (i.e. all security updates installed). It’s one thing to be able to exploit a computer because the user was too lazy to install updates that would have easily protected them from it. It’s even MORE impressive if you can exploit a fully-up-to-date machine, as it shows the exploit/s is still potentially-applicable and useful to this day (and demonstrate the security risks of using Windows XP in 2019).
The “explaining thoroughly yet understandably how each works” part just means that the blog posts are REALLY well-written. Not only do they do a decent job of explaining how the exploit works, but they explain it in (relatively) simple terms that anyone could understand it; I don’t want to just throw a bunch of technical jargon at the reader and have them walk away confused; I might assume some level of computer-literacy in the reader, but they shouldn’t need a university degree to understand what the hell I’m saying. If an ordinary person doesn’t understand how the exploit works after reading my post about it, then I haven’t done my job as a communicator.
*******************************************************************************************
This is only a rough potential marking criteria; if my tutor wants to propose amendments to it (or to my project proposal as a whole), they can.
How long will this take?
I estimate ~1 week to research, carry out, and document each exploit. I’ll try to do as many as I can, though I’ll focus on quality > quantity (i.e. making sure the blog posts explaining/documenting each exploit is up-to-scratch before moving on to the next).
This is basically my Something Awesome project proposal: a series on hacking Windows XP.

Shoot, But It'll Value You
Canon's full-body 6D Mark II is a solid improve with a catch. I've a Panasonic Lumix p & s and a Canon Insurgent SLR. Furthermore, for those keen on capturing video, you're limited to simply Full HD with the Canon - that is unlikely to be too much of a problem for the average shooter, but it surely helps to point out the age of the camera. For straightforward HD viewing, the camcorders are equipped with a widescreen LCOS shade viewfinder and a widescreen, 1.15-million pixel three.5-inch LCD shade monitor. Viewing angles are decent, even when you do start to lose color saturation previous a sure tilt point. For more information about the PowerShot G16, S120, SX510 HS, and SX170 IS digital digicam models please visit: /powershot. Creative Shot, obtainable on the PowerShot N, is a straightforward, but highly effective instrument so as to add inventive results to your photographs. The 22-megapixel full-body CMOS sensor is a beast on its own, and the DIGIC 5+ image chip, 102,four hundred max ISO and built-in HDR options make the 5D Mark III probably the greatest DSLRs on the market. The best compact digital camera Lumix LX3 was a really small, pocket-dimension digicam with the complete functionalities of an expert DSLR, a top quality and fast Leica lens (f/2-2.eight) with a helpful zoom range of 24-70mm (full body equivalent). In addition, a collection of artistic features corresponding to Good Filter three.0, Motion Photo and Magic Frame make it simple to create attention-grabbing and unique photos value sharing. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to connect with wi-fi networks without the necessity for any additional playing cards or gadgets, making it seamless to share and retailer photos and video directly from the camera. Users may also immediately add photos wirelessly from the digital camera to Canon iMAGE GATEWAYiii, and automatically upload them to a computer remotely. Dan Bracaglia, Richard Butler, Rishi Sanyal, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10/LX15 Overview , DPReview, November 21, 2016. Whether or not you're a pro on the lookout for a premium compact camera, or simply need to take your point and shoot photography to the following stage, RX100 offers excellent high quality and DSLR-like operation in a complicated, pocket-pleasant package deal. And with its significant push in the direction of video features, together with 4K capture and an abundance of excessive-end options, that can be for both photographers and videographers alike. I found that my spouse's ELPH was light and thin sufficient to form of just disappear into a pocket and never be noticeable - for me or others. Sony makes cameras for itself, elements for companies like Nikon and Fujifilm, and imaging sensors for gadgets like the iPhone. With a FLIP5 + 15 MACROMATE MINI lens, the GoPro HERO5 Black becomes capable of taking pictures fairly spectacular macro footage, especially contemplating this is primarily a wide angle digicam. Samsung is rolling out two new point-and-shoots that present, if nothing else, that the megapixel battle continues to be far from over. Photographers who wish to immediately evaluate their footage and compose pictures with a large, shiny display screen will prefer a sizeable LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY or TFT show. Controls have additionally changed pretty considerably, ditching the split of buttons both aspect of the display screen in favor of a structure that'll be familiar to X-Pro2 and X-T2 customers. Our $a hundred order total is calculated in any case rebates, coupon codes and additional discounts have been utilized. In the event you're short on house and need to journey gentle, check out these compact cameras which you could slip in a pocket. The Panasonic GX800 is a great digital camera to buy if you'd like something easy that will nonetheless take great photos. Then there's the integrated Android OS with snappy 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, permitting the Samsung to run numerous apps on Android 4.three ‘Jelly Bean'. There are a lot of decisions on the market but I might suggest you to go through the checklist of Finest Point Shoot Cameras to get a good suggestion of the very best shutterbug units out there. To me, pocketable is essential for avenue images and a few tourist photos. Full HD 1080p video could be recorded at 60 frames per second, and the digital camera features in-digicam video modifying features allowing you to chop footage and mix individual clips into a single video. I took the Leica to Hong Kong in January and I had a incredible time with it for each video and photographs. If you are keen to forego the optical viewfinder and the 4K video recording for a price drop of INR 6000, then you should go for this. The Panasonic LX10 fires comparatively quickly allowing me to seize the fish within the shot as they swim by. Shot with the Nauticam WWL-1 extensive lens. This makes it simple to see that you got that super tight macro shot in focus with out having to see the precise crucial focus. The mix of Apple's current-gen A9 chipset with 2GB of RAM is sufficient to preserve things running smoothly, from swiping via house screens to switching between apps to firing up graphically intensive video games. WHY IT'S A PRIME DECIDE: A large assortment of features packed into a compact 1-inch sensor camera. EOS M10 18.0 MP ISO 12,800 Tilting contact display screen Full HD, Hybrid CMOS AF II Wi-Fi and NFC View details. Nine months ago: The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 is our new choose for a high-end compact camera, offering touchscreen operation and 4K video at a surprisingly low value. With them, there isn't any extra worrying about sharing pics on social media , as a best pocket camera result of all you might want to do is shoot, print and hand out a very good 'ole fashioned picture to your family and friends. I simply improve to a Sony RX10 iii instead and to date am very a lot in love with my outcomes. There are just a few different improvments, including a new film mode, but these are the important thing factors. Picture quality: We at Enterprise Insider shot a sequence of pictures that compared a DSLR camera, some extent-and-shoot digital camera, and a smartphone digicam. You'll be able to see the sharpness of details in the one hundred pc insets above, shot at f/9 with a 1/a hundred-second shutter pace and a sensitivity of ISO one hundred. It has almost no shutter lag, and you can shoot full resolution pictures at up to 10 frames per second, which is nice velocity. It's pretty darn similar in any other case, nevertheless: it has the same 49-level AF, 25,600 max (expanded) ISO, 3-inch, 1.04 million dot touchscreen and shoots 1080/30p video. Nevertheless, what you dont know is that your point and shoot camera additionally retains some playing cards up its sleeve, which you dont know about. We know that you've got many, many selections when you shop and we're grateful that you have chosen to place your belief in us. And to reward you for that, we expect that it is best to get a bit of something again once you store with us! And most customers would go for G1X as a result of most do not want interchangeable lenses after they have a nice zoom-lens. Sony's a6000 , in the meantime, is a highly succesful mirrorless digital camera that's often obtainable for round $650 with an included lens. There have been a variety of different minor tweaks, notably faster steady shooting of 6fps, up from 5.5fps, and a new quiet steady mode at 3fps.

PHOT201 Weird & Wonderful ‘Alienated Spaces’ - Book Design, Publication and Final Book
The main outcome for PHOT201 is to have a presentable book that contains one’s own photographic narrative for this project. Alienated Spaces is the documentation of banal and urban spaces, with the subtext of capitalism being inherently alienating and estranging.
To do this, I selected to use Bob Books to create and publish by book. This post is meant to underline Bob Book’s services and their quality of work. The postage is first to be addressed. I ordered the book on December 29th, and arrived on January 7th (with me missing the delivery as I was at college, so it was collected on the 8th). In the space of 9 days, the book was printed, shipped and arrived on my doorstep. To me, this is a speedy service, and certainly worthy of being used again.
Lets start with the cover. Firstly, I wasn’t expecting the cover to be as glossy as it is. I for one am not a fan of glossy paper - at all! So I was rather disappointed when I saw the covers were a glossy card (I probably ‘glossed’ over any information). But, the print quality is outstanding, which is also a reoccurring theme. Also, the text at the top is ever so slightly cut off. This wasn’t an issue with the designer software, as I was sure to have the text away from any edges.
The rear cover follows the same tropes as the front. It uses the same glossy finish, but this doesn’t come across when I was using my light box. For the record, I was using my Canon 5D and an adapted Super Takumar 55mm F2. The ISO was set to 100, and the Takumar stopped down to F2.8 - F4. Again, the print quality is excellent and there are no issues with scan quality (just yet).
Now comes the print quality for the interior of the book. I chose to use the classic photo paper, as it wasn’t totally glossy or matte. It’s closer to a lustre finish, of which I prefer for my photography - as I feel that glossy paper makes photos look cheap and tacky. However, Bob Book’s print quality is outstanding. I don’t see any flaws with the printing at all, and the paper stock has a nice tactility because of the weight of the paper.
The text also came out well, apart from one small issue with the ‘P’ on spaces. I had noticed on the designer software that the font was not totally agreeing, despite the font coming from the software. I had thought that this wouldn’t of come across on print, but it certainly did. This is a minor issue, but it really gets under my skin, despite it being such a menial detail.
Another worry I had was the difference in scan quality with the last two shoots. The majority of the film was scanned with the Epson V850 Pro at 2400dpi. I have had immense success with the V850, as I find the scans to be nice and neutral and feature a lot of detail. However, the final shoots were completed at a time where I could not access the V850, so I had to use the scanner I own at home: the Canoscan 9000F MKii. I have mixed feelings with this scanner - whilst it’s a nice creature comfort to scan film at home, it just shows me that it isn’t worth skimping on a film scanner. There is a noticeable quality difference in the scans, when one compares them together. There doesn’t seem to be much difference at face value, but if you pixel-peel you can certainly notice a difference. I would image that with the untrained eye, this wouldn’t be too much of an issue.
The prints are also slightly darker than I also imagined. This is something that came up when I talking to my friend, Thom. He mentioned that when he prints anything using a third party, he always ups the exposure of the image by at least a stop or two. This isn’t much of an issue, until it gets to the Cinestill images where the darkness is fairly apparent.
A coda. The product that I received from Bob Books has certainly surprised me. It’s rather interesting to see one’s work within a book format - it’s rather like having a collection of prints that’re condensed together within a particular narrative. Whilst there are some minor niggles that get under my skin, I am rather glad to see how the final outcome has materialised. I am not quite sure what I was expecting, but it’s rather odd to have a ‘professional’ looking book featuring one’s work. The print quality is outstanding, as well as the resolution. There are also no QC issues with the book’s construction (although I would of preferred a lay flat book to a perfect bound, seeing how close my images are to the gutter). It does sound like I am being rather negative about this book, but I am seriously over the moon about the quality of the main product. The aspects of which I am not so fond of are learning curves, for sure. I can bare these in mind when I undertake my next book excursion. All that needs to be done now is to create the presentation that is being undertaken on the 17/1/2019. I am yet to create the presentation as I am not aware of the presentation’s format - whether it be a surf through my journal, or a slideshow detailing the main portions of this project. I also have to write up the evaluation, that evaluates the entirety of the project. This shall be started imminently.

10 Fun, Cheap Date Nights You Can Have At Home (That Aren’t Netflix)
How often have I babbled on about the importance of keeping the romance alive in your relationship? Im not trying to be annoying or repetitive, but it is important! I am a firm believer that religiously practicing date night on a regular basis is crucial to relationship health. Let me be mores specific. Im not talking about a double or triple date where the conversation is flying six different ways. I do love those group dates with my favorite couples, but I am talking about the importance of one-on-one dates with your boo. Setting aside quality time to spend with your hubby with no distractions is like an apple a day for your relationship.
To keep these date nights interesting, youll want to mix it up and try new things. Obviously, date night has the potential of becoming a very expensive activity. Try hitting up Groupon and Living Social for not only cheap dates, but dates you would have never thought of yourself, like flying trapeze classes or a painting class at a local bar. But for those of us that arent rolling in the dough, these internet deals can still be a splurge. Dont worry, I am here to tell you that you can still have a date night every two weeks (or once a month, whichever you fancy) at home and on a budget. Here are some creative ways to make your date night romantic, entertaining, and low cost.
1. Living Room Camping
This is one has sentimental value to me. When my fianc and I first started dating I was going through a rough time in generally and the bad days at work didnt help. When Id had a particularly crappy day, I would come home to find a good old fashioned fort in the living room. The outside was made with sheets and furniture; inside he made a comfortable cushioned floor using pillows and comforters. We would take refuge inside the fort and forget about all of our problems. Dont knock it until you try it! Use your fireplace or some candles as a mock campfire, roast some marshmallows and tell ghost stories. How does that not sound like a good time?
2. Outdoor Dining
If youve got a nice or even just a clean backyard, use it! Set up a small table for two outside complete with candles and a bottle of wine. Put on some nice background music and have a good old fashioned backyard dinner. Its very romantic. Unlike eating on patio of a restaurant with twenty other couples sharing your moment, this makes for a very private and intimate setting. Think your backyard or patio doesnt have the ambiance needed for outdoor dining? An easy fix is to hang cheap outdoor lights. Its amazing how one detail can work wonders on setting the mood.
3. Boudoir Photo Shoot
Okay, so if you are a little more on the reserved side (cough, prude, cough), this one may not be your cup of tea, but hear me out before you rule it out completely. Date night is supposed to be all out coming together with your significant other and getting intimate. I think this is pretty intimate, not to mention fun for all parties involved. Start by choosing a designated back drop like a free wall, a hanging sheet, the bed, etc. Pick a few different pieces of lingerie to change into. Give your guy a camera (prob best if its not a camera phone, dont want these pictures accidentally getting posted on Facebook or Instagram), and let him take control of the photo shoot. Youre the model, he is the director. Enjoy (insert winky face here).
4. Wine Tasting
If you and your guy are wine-os, youll love this one. Use your kitchen table, bar, or coffee table. Set out a few different bottles of wine and glasses. Make sure to set out some food that pairs well with what youll be drinking, think cheeses, veggies, bread, etc. No food equals getting drunk way too fast, passing out early, and a nasty hangover. That being said, take your time as you would if you were in Napa on a rustic vineyard. Swirl, sniff, sip, and then discuss your opinions on flavor and stuff. Obviously I am not well educated on wine specifics, but you dont have to be to enjoy this. Its just you and your boo, no wine snobs to make you feel dumb. If you are a wine snob, great! Youll have fun with this one too and there wont be any amateurs to slow down your night. Remember to light some candles and put on background music!
5. Game Night
Game night can go one of three ways and Ill leave it up to you to try one or all three. The first is nostalgia game night. Choose your favorite childhood board games (mine are Candy Land and Operation) and laugh at the memories over a bottle of wine or your favorite beer. The second is adult game night. This includes a more grown up version with games like Cards Against Humanity. The third is x-rated game night. Go to your local sex shop or search online for an intimate adult game. There are tons to choose from involving blind folds, melted chocolate, and roll of the body part dice. Whether you choose PG, x-rated, or all three, game night with your handsome babe is sure to be loads of fun.
6. Project/Craft Night
With all of the hours we spend pinning cool crafts on Pinterest, this option seems very appealing. But please, for the love of god, do not make your significant other do something he will hate like knitting or scrap-booking. Choose a house project youve been meaning to get around to or a fun project you can both be involved in. Make sure this is an activity that interests BOTH of you, not just you and not just him. Youll also make sure this is something that is more fun than it is hard work, remember you are doing this as a date. Order a pizza or take out and of course you can add alcohol to the mix if you fancy. Put on your favorite Pandora station and get to work. My man and I did this as a date night with a painting I had seen on Pinterest. It was a hand painting in which each family members hand was in a different color and the prints were all over the canvas, overlapping each other. It looked really cool, so we tried it and of course included the dogs. It was interesting night to say the least, dogs and paint can get messy. No matter, now we have a somewhat decent piece of handmade art to hang in our home.
7. Karaoke
Yes, Blake and I have done this and it was so much fun! We didnt plan on it, it just happened. We started one night with tacos and margaritas, an hour later we were taking turns on the Play Station 3 mic and singing our little hearts out. A bit of heads up, this may not be the greatest idea if you have close proximity neighbors who dont like crappy singing and loud music. If you can, do this! Such a great way to let loose with the one you love. Not into singing? No problem, make it a dance party instead. Im not a video game person, not in the slightest, but karaoke and dancing games are perfect for this. We have Sing Star and Just Dance for Play Station. If you dont have these games but want to try them, check your local rental store or RedBox. You wont regret this one!
8. Spa Session
I know what youre thinking, my manly man wont even get in a bubble bath. First of all, that sucks for him. Second of all, he will end up truly enjoying this one if he approaches it with an open mind. Okay ladies, dont torture your men! No tweezing, waxing, or anything else that is painful and/or will change his appearance. Thats how youll send him running and screaming out of the bathroom. Instead, make this a relaxation effort, not a make over. Run a warm bubble bath with salts and scented oils. While youre waiting for the tub to fill, start with a face mask. I like the warming ones, they immediately send my mind into relaxation mode. Help your beau apply and rinse off his mask. Slip into the tub together and just relax and talk. For added romance, carefully place a few candles safely around the tub and bring a glass of wine for each of you. Just dont get so relaxed that you fall asleep, because after the tub youll want to move it into the bedroom and take turns giving each other back massages. Stop by a body shop like Bath & Body Works for some aromatherapy massage oil. Best spa session ever.
9. Cooking Class
I know I said in home and I meant it. When I say cooking class I dont mean attending an actual cooking class, I mean doing your own cooking class with just the two of you. Find a recipe from a cooking magazine, book, or show that sounds delish to both of you but neither have any experience with cooking such a dish. You will work together, sharing the tasks at hand. And I mean for you to cook an actual gourmet meal, not Mac & Cheese from a box, no matter how much you crave it sometimes. This is your date night activity, so have some fun with it. Put on your aprons and help each other chop, season, and stir the ingredients. When youve completed your edible masterpiece, its time to dig in. Sit down to a table set for two and cheers each other to your cooking accomplishment.
10. Star Gazing
Its back outside for this date night. Sometimes all you need is star-filled night sky to add that little extra bit of romance. If you have a cozy backyard (and ideally a fire pit to keep you warm), take a thermos filled with hot cocoa or spiked cider, a blanket, and your loved one to do some star gazing. Do some research before hand and make a game of trying to spot certain constellations. If you have a stable flat roof, set up some lawn chairs and enjoy the view from up there. Be careful getting on and off your roof! No back yard or accessible roof? Take a stroll down to your local park. Odds are, it will be deserted after dark and the jungle gym style toys make for great seats.
No matter what you choose to do on your date nights, make sure you are focused on each other. Make it about you two and nothing else. Hopefully Ive inspired you to try something new with your partner in crime. Maybe one of these unique date nights will start a spark and youll be truly glad you branched out. If nothing else, simply relish in the company of your loved one.
