Finished watching all 2 of the episodes of dungeon meshi available and i gotta say, while i do think the sound design does it a disservice by not properly emphasizing the comedic elements and moments more, this has had the unintended side effect of making Laios 10x more attractive. Like dont get me wrong he was always an excellent character but by deemphasizing his monster interest as the main source of comedy via its intensity and off-putting-ness (in the eyes of the other characters at least) they have turned him into a serious but earnest autistic man sharing the joy of his main hyperfixation with me, which is objectively one of the Most Attractive types of guy, and has redirected the comedy onto Marcille being a failgirl. As it should. Anime laios and senshi fan service when.
#dungeon meshi#laios touden#laios dungeon meshi#please ask me for my opinions on the anime i want to share them so bad#also yall already know how i feel abt this guy im the op of the laios autistic bio major post#austistic men and failwomen are my favorite guy#senshi dungeon meshi

When dungeon meshi was airing everyone was like "laois is canonically autistic and marcile/ferin is canon and the fat guy with a moustache is used for fan service and that guy with the ponytail is a violent ableist misogynist who is punished by the narrative for getting in the way of yuri" and thought that was cool but didn't watch it bc its fans treated dunmeshi like it was the ONLY anime to ever treat women as people or whatever and I thought that was annoying. So its kind of really funny that since it ended all I've learned about it was "the author said laois isn't autistic, he's 'normal' just quirky" "marcile and ferin dont even interact nearly as much as people act like they do, let alone are they canon" "the beard guy was deliberately supposed to be off-putting" "the guy with ponytail is literally Just asian and white people don't like that"

ive thought a little more about devils nest dungeon meshi au (demons nest?) and here is the idea i was bouncing around in my head. id love for some kind of lore compliance check because i havent really gone back over the manga since i finished it, or sought out any kind of supplemental material, and i like the challenge of fitting these kinds of things into the boundaries of the source (once again DUNGEON MESHI SPOILERS. for people who havent read the manga at all)
so you have this demon (in a dungeon) (granting desires and eating them) (getting stronger) (hoping someday he can get out of the dungeon). and hes been in there a while and boy does he love watching humans get their greatest wishes granted, but the part where they gradually go mad with power or get disenchanted with the results and also he has to eat their desires anyway eventually kind of blows. he wishes he could only have the good part where he gets to make people happy forever is that too much to ask. maybe when he gets out of the dungeon he can do something about that. love to get out of the dungeon
anyway fast forward a while and this guy comes in. some teenage prince from a tallman country thats wracked with internal conflict and what HE wants is to become immortal, because that way when he takes the throne his reign will be eternal and the different clans will stop fighting over the right of succession. thats so specific. the demon loves it. he can just give him a peaceful united empire here, in the dungeon, which he can rule eternally-- no he wants the one at home. well. the problem with that is that the demon is here, in the dungeon, and not out there.
HELP WANTED NOTICE: i dont remember what the exact plan was vis a vis the winged lion getting up to the surface in the manga and i know it Had to be simpler than "just walk out of there" because why would it have had to steal laios' body about it. WOULD a sufficiently dedicated dungeon lord be able to get back up to the surface with their respective demon in tow.
ADDITIONAL HELP WANTED NOTICE: if a demon WAS freed from the dungeon without being powerful enough to get out under its own strength, how much magic would it be able to perform out there? would it be able to make somebody immortal without the big magic-insulation box. i feel like this changes a lot if greed Can grant ling immortality vs if now that hes out of the dungeon he cant really do shit.
either way now that hes out he does not technically need to eat this kids desires specifically anymore. if the immortality thing is a bust, maybe hes shaken by the experience of not being able to fulfill somebodys wish for the first time. but HIS wish has been fulfilled instead? complicated! maybe ling drags him back to his kingdom to help him gain the throne, or maybe he gets mad and leaves and greed never finds out what happens to him, but whatever goes down it changes his worldview and hes starting to develop a sense of personhood separate from the rest of the Demon Conglomerate, and also desires that are unique to Him
but he still wants to help people realize their own desires and maybe thats even strengthened by the fact that now he personally knows how much it owns (funny) to want something so bad and finally get it. so im thinking eventually he goes back to his old dungeon, now way smaller, and he sets up shop, and just waits for people to come by so he can help them in a less exploitative way. like he graduates from Addiction Metaphor to Healthy Coping Mechanism Metaphor. and the chimeras all find their way there eventually and he wins their trust one at a time until they are forced to admit this weird overly genuine dungeon guy kind of rules. his personality is laios basically he has the exact same type of autistic swag
but. if the elves heard about a demon who was just fucking going up to people floor 1 like hi im a demon welcome to my dungeon. they would shit bricks. so the raid also has to happen at some point. and i Am putting ling in there albeit as backstory so im open to suggestions as to how the rest of the cast of fma can fit into this (father and the homunculi as other more typical demons obviously) (no clue about anybody else) (come and play toys with me)

FINE, LILY ORCHARD DUNGEON MESHI RESPONSE POST I GUESS
im just going through all the video points and making oppositions to them based on what i think, thats it.
laios useless in the red dragon fight: this is setting up the premise of the story where laios is spacing out because he cannot strategize on an empty stomach which is why the party loses.
there is no urgency to rescuing falin after everyone escapes the dungeon: thats to show that all the adventurers are so used to the dungeons immortality that theyve forgotten about the consequences of death (and also they are not thinking straight bc they are hungry)
dungeon meshi is not slice of life in the traditional low stakes way a slice of life set in the real world might be. the entire premise is about making a fantasy dungeon crawler and its heroes more grounded and showing things that aren't shown in video games, eating, sleeping, bathing, etc. a major theme is life and death, what is needed to sustain life and how death is a necessary part of it.
the tone of the show is not meant to be serious/silly/serious/silly, its not supposed to be wholesome, fun, and heartfelt, though it can be those things, its supposed to be weird and demystifying because its about real life (though a fantasy lense) and real life doesnt adhere to tone either.
resurrecting falin, having a bath and dinner, and then thistle coming to collect her happening in two episodes is not crazy thats almost an hour of runtime
MISGENDERING THISTLE
some of the problems with this video are just the anime format which i cant completely fault, i think the manga is better paced and the humor lands better ill probably ignore those points going forward. but i feel like if you dont watch anime very much you probably dont really know them the common genre tropes, like i certainly dont.
the reason marcille is "infinitely more popular than the rest" is a) lilys girl bias b) everyones girl bias and thats it, a lot of people like decently written generically good looking female characters. but thats not even true laios is probably equally as popular as marcille is and senshi is VERY close behind both of them.
laios is literally only generic in looks and if youre going to bring it up you might as well mention how marcille is therefore EXACTLY as generic as laios is, they are some very regular white people. in terms of looks.
laios only cares about monsters and is an asshole: this is an intentional mischaracterization the OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE STORY make about laios, which is a result of his real flaw which is struggling to connect with other people. this is a character flaw, which is intentional and something laios himself is aware of and tries to overcome, it is part of his character arc. laios is also heavily autistic coded, im not sure if ryoko kui is even aware of it or if she herself is autistic and just wrote a bit of her own struggles into laios's character but this reading is widely recognized by people who are autistic so. like its hard to argue with a mass of people who see their disability in a character. (me included)
comparing his deadpan affect to lloyd (i dont know him tbh)s intentional controlled one makes no sense bc i assume lloyd is yknow a super secret agent who IS a super secret agent because of his self control or whatever. laios is just a guy. literally just a dude, who is autistic.
marcille and laios react to falins resurrection differently because they are different characters, showing different ranges of emotion are part of their characterization. having a limited range of expressed emotion in serious situations where emotion is expected of you is also a commonly recognized autistic trait (see me not crying at the airport when my now husband had to go back to his side of the planet when we were dating)
falin is also autistic coded and shares a lot of traits with laios because its supposed to be funny that everyone thinks falin is so talented and brilliant and lovely when she yknow picks up a bug or something but they think its annoying when laios presents the same traits.
refer to point 10 again
they are literally moving through the dungeon as fast as they can. it gets brought up, laios feels guilty about it but hes not indulging in his special interest as opposed to rescuing his sister, the adventure is enabling it. whats he supposed to do brood the entire way? do you think anyone would be physically capable of doing that? see points 1-4 again if not.
just because a different character would do something different doesnt meant the story would be better, the point of THIS story is an exploration of THESE characters
this is retreading a point but "marcille is the only character who feels like a human being" .... girl the ableism - it can be argued that marcille is a bit ND herself but she is laios's neurotypical foil, the entire point of their dynamic is she is the normal person to compare him to, to act like shes the only character that matters because shes the only one thats normal has some nasty implications.
"you or i would-" thats making some assumptions
marcille is tormented the most by the show because the show is about exploring a dungeon, a major character trait of hers is her inexperience, shes squeamish shes young and naive because she has EXCLUSIVELY studied dungeons in books she has only seen the dungeon in person for like a year or two (i dont remember the time frame but we know how time works for marcille anyway). senshi by contrast has been surviving exclusively off the dungeons resources for like 60 years. you mention that marcille grows a lot by the end but its not just about eating food she learns survival skills, she learns ecology.
sorry i need to take a break to just rant, isnt this woman a writer? i feel like all she can only see characters through common media tropes and so dungeon meshi is just breaking her brain because all of these characters are written from a strong foundation they all have roots that inform all of their flaws. i feel like she isnt willing to see them that way because she assumes that because this is an anime the author didnt put any thought into the characters beyond their designs and gimmicks, thats just speculation obvs its just the impression im getting
but like i see the way people talk about kui on here how she feels like one of us because the dungeon meshi characters are her ocs. how theyre not just characters for a story. its like imagine someone talking this way about YOUR OCS, your babies, the characters you put your heart and soul into and especially for someone like kui who has created so much depth for her characters for someone [who also calls herself a writer] to brush it all off bc it got an anime adaptation and anime has tropes.
i really dont like people who approach media from "ive seen this before" and i mean im a little guilty of it but its kind of a useless thought isnt it, for the most part things get made because someone wanted to make it not because it needed to exist. i guess its a hard thing not to think when theres just SO MANY shows and stuff out there but idk, i dont think its a healthy perspective most of the time.
chilchucks a bitch you cant listen to what he says and be like "the narrative is bullying marcille" chilchuck is bullying marcille, chilchuck is a bully
(oh it seems the numbers have reset, oops)
shes talking about why anime sucks again, i havent seen spy x family and i dont care to it doesnt appeal to me
retreading points but i forgot which ones laios thinking falins dragon form is cool is another example of how laios's character essence is that he doesnt think like other people. and i have to imagine that if not for the mind control aspect falin wouldnt be horrified by her dragon form either. neither of them care about the "obvious" socially expected reaction of "horrified" theyre thinking about a) what they like to think about which tends to be ooh monsters are cool and then b) whatever is most practical at this moment - i think its not just lily that struggles with this i think its a lot of people who follow social scripts tend to follow what the main cast of dungeon meshi is thinking so theyre horrified/confused by whatever laios is doing but he just intuits what actually materially matters and what doesnt. him thinking falin getting to have a cool dragon form has NOTHING to do with his feelings about saving her.
"your experience with autism isnt universal" neither is yours???? isnt that kind of the thing about autism (this is from her comments not the video but thats kind of her point about this point in the video is that she doesnt relate to laios's autistic traits) - guys shes saying sheldon cooper gets called out on his shit and grows as a person but laios doesnt... guys i dont even know what i can specifically say to make someone stop believing that because i dont know why anyone could believe that in the first place.
i dont want to write this point bc i dont want anyone to think i dont have any concept of like pervasive preferential trends in media but i think she specifically hates laios because hes a white man with autistic traits. i think if laios was a woman those traits would be not as bad (which is kinda funny bc i was talking about that being a joke with falins autistic traits earlier)
laios is funny to me :) (in the manga mostly)
i think she shouldve read the manga instead of watching half the anime but i guess thats it. if you (anyone reading this) see this out in the wild please dont make assumptions about me based on this post, it doesnt really tell you anything about me or my wider opinions.
i guess you can assume im autistic i did say that part, go ahead and assume that i suppose.
i think i have some clarifications i was gonna make but i got tired so i cant remember where they go or what they are, this isnt really meant to be a discussion its just me writing down some thoughts indirectly bc i didnt want to comment on her video. but its in response to a video so its only fair i guess if anyone wants me to clarify i can try my best to do that

hi. need help deciding an idea for my next powerpoint topic. here's the pros and cons
COMMUNITY
^_^: i can rewatch it and take notes on individual episodes, i get to ramble about trobed and geothermal escapism and abed in general
X: genuinely this would be so fucking long. i would have to probably only do one season or choose 3 eps from every season. if i did that tho, i would spoil it and frankly i think geothermal escapism is something everyone should experience with no prior knowledge. so probably id just do the first season. but then i dont get to talk about character growth DO YOU SEE THE CATCH 22 HERE
FNAF
^_^: i get to make another fnaf powerpoint (funny as hell, everyone enjoyed the last one) and ill maybe finally finish that video rip
X: done fnaf before. kind of want to branch out? but also i'm comfortable with fnaf so..
ROTTMNT
^_^: i get to ramble about why it's the best tmnt series (< guy who hasn't watched any of the other ones) and character ramble in general. i will reveal im a donnie kinnie which will be funny
X: brother i don't even know where to start. i love so much about this series and have very few gripes with it. love explosion. it's a bit of an intimidating project.
DUNGEON MESHI
^_^: AAUAAHHHHHGGG i already talk about this a lot and nobody has any clue what the hell im yapping about but this would force them to listen
X: i haven't read anything past the anime so i could only explain the anime and some additional epic lore stuff<3
MINECRAFT
^_^: i'm autistic as hell about this and could talk about SOOOOO much. speedruns, game mechanics, lore, personal headcanons, builds, etc.
X: none in particular except that i don't have any suuuuper strong passion for putting my thoughts in powerpoint form.
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH EVERY YOUTUBER IM SUBSCRIBED TO
^_^: easy and would be funny and also i get to share multiple interests
X: not particularly passionate about this. would still have a fuck ton of fun of course tho

Watched the new Dungeon Meshi and Oh My Lord the argument between Shuro and Laois hit me like a sack of edible bricks. Laois is so autistic, he misses social cues, he doesnt notice ppl dont like him or are annoyed. Theres something so magical about a character like this, he is so me. Growing up I missed social cues and often assumed ppl were my friends despite them implying they didnt want me around or leaving me out. I will ramble about my special interests to general annoyance and mocking, but I wont realize everyone is making fun of me.
People assume maliciousness from Laois but he appears to simply not know he could be percieved that way. He is such a good guy but hes so oblivious and idk but that resonates so much with me.
I did not expect to be attacked in this way while watching the funny monster show

I’ve really been enjoying dungeon meshi but I don’t think I can engage with the fandom bc tbh I don’t give a fuck about any of the characters
NOW DONT GET ME WRONG, they’re fine! Interesting and weird and pleasantly diverse, very well written. I like them.
But also I do not CARE about PEOPLE tell me more about THE ECOSYSTEMMMMMMM
To me they’re like the mildly charismatic narrator/hosts of a nature documentary, purely the vehicle through which I get to see and learn about this environment and the creatures in it. And also some of them are getting killed and mutated or something blah blah blah TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE MONSTERS
I don’t even care about food aside from as an aspect of the ecosystem yes that looks delicious Senshi but also what is the full life cycle of the creature you just fried?
If this whole series was Laios being Steve Irwin and going into the dungeon like that I would be 10000000000% more insane about it
As it stands I watch it like “:) this is nice” for the people segments and then “HOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH BOYYYYY, WHAT IS THAT?!?!?!? 🩷💜💙💚🪱🪺🐁🐉🦥🦑🦂🪰🐦🔥🌴🪸💐 WEIRD SHIT??? TELL ME ABOUT THAT ONE!!!”
And then it’s back to the people and I’m like“:( aw. This is nice but you didn’t tell me everything about that little guy we just met. I know his bite is super poisonous and he uses camouflage which is cool BUT YOU COULD TELL ME MORE. You’re dying of poison yeah yeah yeah guys fix your guy or whatever where’s another monster?”
Everyone on tumblr has autistic king Laios or disaster honor student Marcille content but nobody puts Living Armor field guild pages on my dash where’s my bio nerds who couldn’t give a fuck about the characters literally if they all died permanently and were replaced I’d be mildly sad but if the new people are gonna show me more shit about the dungeon biosphere IDGAF BABYYYY
#yeah senshi is lovely but DID YOU SEE THAT MOLLUSK MATING RITUAL?!?#TELL ME MORE ABOUT BIG MONSTER PARASITES#dark magic is super illegal and you guys are gonna get arrested? oh. well sucks for you WHERE ARE THE BUGS HMMM??

when it comes to characters that i see myself in/desire to be or full blown think "literally me", they tend to never be male characters. women? yes. nb? yes. transmasc? sometimes yes. I can't really find myself attaching to cis male characters in the way that i attach to characters whom have those queer gender identities, simply cause its just hard to see myself in a character who represents an identity i want to disown. Not to say I don't latch onto any male characters Ever but its not out of being able to find them affirming on a personal level.
For example, Laios from Dungeon Meshi is awesome and cute and i can very much relate to his autistic ass nature, but i couldn't see him as a character that represents me simply because he's a man. Doesn't mean i don't adore him to bits though, lovely man.... i need him... but even though I relate to the way he acts in many ways, I couldn't look at him and say "Literally me" in a whole-spirited sense.
However, among all the cis male characters in media... there is one silly exception: Jake the Dog. Jake has to be one of the most 'Guy' characters I know in media, so much so that i can't even convince myself with a head-canon that he's anything other than a cis man. Not only he's a man, but i can't really name things i have in common with him to call Jake a notably relatable character. Yet, somehow whenever i see him i... Feel Like Him.. in a way. Like some sort of weird spirit animal he's helped me know myself more, as if watching him grow is peering into a reflection from the future. I wish i could explain where that feeling comes from, especially since i basically said that Jake would be a character i could never see myself in; even if he's one of my favorite characters ever.
Im not really sure what it is. Maybe it's his worldview, or his lifestyle, or that hes really really funny. Maybe this is just the AT hyperfixation making it all up, I dont know!!! but what i do know is Whenever im thinking to myself, whether it be a random thought about the world, or a hypothetical conversation. sometimes my inner monologue will say something that has me thinking
"huh... thats something Jake would say...".
STILL WISH I WAS MARCELINE DOE
