spoilers + apologies, i get a bit rambly lol

my understanding is that its who the person views as their closest family.

i will point out that while gideon did have his father, when talking about his memory building a motorbike with pa coal, he mentioned that it was one of, if not his only happy memory with him. so in his mind currently, he either just doesnt remember having a father and perhaps grew up mostly an orphan, or any other memory involving pa coal is a not so happy memory, and further drives a familial wedge between them. with twig there are complicated feelings, but we know gideon basically imprinted on her and takes on a role of something either paternal, or at the least a big brother/little sister vibe.

as far as kremy goes, we all know just how attached he is to gideon, platonic or otherwise. and in his memory we learned he left his family fairly young, and other than passing through i dont think he’s ever really gone back home for visits. he has fond memories of meemaw as she taught him his culinary skills, but he doesnt speak much more on it. he has a lot more trust in gideon given the nature of their relationship, running together even well before their failed carnival and before meeting gricko, frost, and torbek, so its safe to assume that he views gideon as his most trusted ally, and even family in this instance.

frost and gricko did not have inherently bad childhoods growing up, or in frost’s case, he doesnt remember the bad parts. gricko had a fairly functional family from what we can tell, despite the whole horror story surrounding uncle glorbo, but he is ALWAYS talking about his family back home. he speaks often about cousins or his mom, so it makes total sense that he sees his immediate family as his true family. he cares about the party to a degree, but perhaps he sees them as more his employer and coworkers than true found family.

frost, we have the least info about. he comes off as apathetic, but just seems more emotionally stunted than anything. being raised in a psyonic order that revolves around controlling the mind is bound to do that to someone. however, he speaks fondly of his parents in his flashback, and seemed honestly pretty upset at the thought of their eventual demise. its safe to assume that in his mind, his parents were his closest kin, and now without the added trauma of their deaths, he thinks of them now more than ever before. he probably views the party in a similar vein to gricko, as they were hired together.

(edit: this could also stem from their understanding of family too! like gricko might believe a family is your parents, your children, their siblings and children, etc. so that might explain why his dad was up there and he didnt necessarily know him. he probably just thinks ‘oh me mum and dad’ and the portraits said ‘oh shit heres your absentee father then’)

OUaW ep 55 spoilers

Okay, so I love the paintings thing, but I have a question.

First, not the question, I love Torbek’s paintings being the whole group and that it lead to him standing up for himself more when he realized that he wasn’t part of anyone else’s. I really hope that he has an opportunity to really be angry about the way he’s been treated, he deserves at least that, and that everyone else continues to grow and treat him better and apologize.

Second, my actual question, why would Gideon and Kremy’s be limited to just each other (and Twig for Gid)? Like I get that it’s who is their close family, but like, Gricko saw his father, yet Kremy and Gideon didn’t see any of their bio family. It’s certainly not that it can only be family that’s alive, we have no idea who of Kremy’s family is alive, we know Gideon’s father is dead and can assume any other family he may have had is too, and then Twig is complicated. Frost’s parents are also dead, but he doesn’t remember that, so maybe that’s why, but then Uncle Glorbo is there? And Gricko at least thinks he’s dead, we don’t really know. Torbek’s makes perfect sense to me so I don’t really have any questions there.

I don’t expect that this will be narratively explained, but I want to know why Kremy and Gideon’s parents, possible siblings, or Kremy’s MeeMaw wouldn’t be there.
