Ao3: 10 Tips for Getting More Hits on Your Fanfic

Disclaimer! Do whatever you want! This is unpaid labor and you're doing it because you want to, don’t suck the life out of it by avoiding things you want to write about. That being said, if you are losing motivation because you aren't getting enough encouragement or you want to know where you went wrong, keep reading...

1) Tags Tags Tags

Max out your tags with tropes, characters, content warnings, audience targeting and every single spicy action taken. Less tags makes the reader think less happens in the story. They might not even read through them, but they will think that you have a plan beyond the first chapter. Dont be too scared to spoil shit, thats what tags are for.

2) Description

Likewise, make sure you have a decently long description with correct spelling and grammar. Ao3 is rife with unreadable, un-paragraphed nightmares and if your description is riddled with mistakes, people won't bother with you.

3) Pairings

Sex sells, but so does romance. Either way, the most popular stories usually cover a lot of bases by containing multiple ships. You don't have to do that, especially since it tends to water down the story and leave everyone a little dissatisfied, but try to think about the way people search for fics. They usually have a ship in mind. Work with that, try to write about pairings people like at least a little. Or dont. Live yo dreams.

4) Chapters

2,000-3,000 words, trust me. More than that and you might as well cut it in half to get twice the traffic and twice the comments. Plus, people forget what happened at the beginning of the chapter and you’ll never get any praise for all that hard work. Less, and people will feel like youre already running out of content.

5) Long-Fics

One shots (single chapter, short stories) are good, but they’re a gamble for every new reader. What are the characters like? Is this writer good? Should I be invested or will it end on a cliffhanger for no reason? Some people prefer to wrap everything up in one sitting, but if you want subscriptions, comments and bookmarks, write a long-fic (a full length story).

6) Launch

Post at least 3 chapters as fast as you can (quality is important tho). Too many long-fics claim to be 1/20 chapters, but you never see them again, orphaned before they even started. A big drop also allows your readers time to get hooked. They get comfortable just as the well runs dry and THATS when you get comments begging for more.

7) Story Ideas

Try to stay within the realm of the fandom in some way. AU’s are fine, but make sure to stay close enough to the canon in your initial pitch to still make sense. Let your audience have a chance of guessing roughly where you’re going with this idea. Age them up predictably, exaggerate established character traits, use the butterfly effect to change the canon storyline in a way that makes your audience go “Oh my god, that would be so cool! I wish that had happened!” Don’t throw a bunch of random shit at them with nothing but the character names intact, it pisses people off. (trust me)

8) Cliffhangers

Hear me out, neat and tidy leaves people satisfied... too satisfied. Don’t play keep away constantly, but every now and then, end a chapter with a cliff hanger. This gets you a lot of comments and demands for updates. Don’t frustrate people too much, but also don’t leave every chapter on happiliy ever after. Don’t let them sleep at night.

9) PROOFREAD

Oh my god I will immediately close a tab if I open it and it's nothing but typos. Use Grammarly, it's free, and learn how to paragraph. Ao3 is starved for legible stories so if you can write a generic smut fic with proper punctuation, you’re at the top of the food chain.

10) Create a portfolio

Give people a nice collection of stories to go through. If you impressed them, they’ll often go through your page to find more since now they know you can be trusted. This is where one-shots are good page fillers. So many of my Kudos emails are back-to-back readers who read my whole collection. They’d rather that than more typos and broken dreams.

(Bonus Pro-Tip: Ao3’s paragraph double-spacing is weird, but dont go through and delete the extra space, its become a standard for the website and it looks weird if you change it. Just make peace with it.)

Oh and btw, if you use italics, copy and paste in your story under Rich Text, not HTML.

okay. this is. potentially such a weird specific ask but as i am over here getting ready to tpk my party who said that. what do you think would happen if for w/e reason jace's college party like. brought jace AND porter along for a mission. no idea WHY this would happen but i'm. literally just picturing the weirdest pissing contest between peregrine and porter during fights and jace is fighting for his life because the tanks are trying to one up each other so he can't even clock that he's kind of being fought over actually.

OH MY GODDDD YEAH. god. i have so many thoughts on this bc like

peregrine and porter are both like. so insecure about their masculinity in ways that i think would clash TERRIBLY. like, if this is adjacent to blood and turpentine canon. maybe their new offensive caster (drow wizard, name currently undecided but he's ysvelde's cousin) bites it and aurora's not able to resurrect him. so they need a backup.

and invidia is like "guys we're close to elmville. i know none of you like him but we could get jace" and dagbert and ysvelde are like "it's not that we dont LIKE him its that he's just. a lot of drama. with aurora and peregrine and everything." but then invidia asks peregrine who's kind of like the unofficial party leader and he's like (convinced he and jace could have an affair bc he's unhappy in his marriage and in his mind jace has always been available to him as a backup option) "well, we need all the help we can get and he's our best option" and i think the only reason aurora would agree to this is bc she thinks whatever mission theyre on might actually kill him

anyways. jace shows up with porter, to everyone's shock, and is like "you guys remember porter? he said he was free too and i figured we could use extra muscle" and IMMEDIATELY peregrine is like "why'd you think that? dagbert and i are--" and then dagbert (only professional on the team) is like making nice with porter and theyre like bonding and peregrine is like [grits teeth] okay. okay. it's fine. it's just a week in the red wastes like old times.

and porter KNOWS about jace and peregrine so he's like playing up the fact that theyre together. like jace gets hurt by something and aurora like rolls her eyes and moves to heal him and porter's like nah don't worry i got him, and kisses jace's hand for a Lay on Hands. and peregrine is fully like [actively seething] calm down calm down calm down calm down

ofc this leads to peregrine taking stupid risks in a major battle bc he thinks he'll win jace over by showing him how he can protect him. and he gets hurt as a result. and so does porter bc now he's taking damage that was meant for peregrine. and jace has to be the one to burn his 9th level spell slot and kill whatever monster theyre fighting. and he's like "guys youre both better adventurers than this?? what the fuck was that?" and neither of them want to admit that theyre kind of in a contest for who can show off in front of him so theyre like "it's nothing, won't happen again"

but ofc it DOES happen again. and again. and aurora who has made it her mission to not interact w jace at all lest she "accidentally" let off a 7th level inflict wounds and reduce him to a pile of black ichor when they still need him is like "you need to tell your little dalliance to knock it off because if you two get my husband killed i can't be held responsible for what i do. youre not even dressed like a whore this time around, i dont know what kind of hex you cast on him but fucking stop it"

and jace would ignore this because to him thats classic aurora, pissed off at him for no reason & blaming him for shit he didn't do, until invidia is like "did you bring porter to fuck with perry on purpose because that's SO you and SO petty i love it" and jace is like "no of course not, i genuinely thought we could use another tank" and ysvelde is like "okay but like, you wanted to fuck with him a little bit, right? make him jealous?"

and jace (low int) finally gets it and is like oh my god. martial classes are all fucking IDIOTS. is that why theyve been absolutely fucking useless in every fight? i shouldve gone through with marrying you ysvelde my life would be so much easier if i'd done that. and THIS is when invidia and ysvelde spill all the drama to him about peregrine and aurora's crumbling marriage and jace comes clean about peregrine coming onto him at his own wedding. and they laugh and laugh and it's like old times for a brief moment.

and then peregrine and porter get into a physical fight bc peregrine doesnt like that porter's been very touchy-feely with jace lately and porter was like "what's it matter to you? he's mine now, not that he was ever yours" or some other creepy possessive bullshit like that. and jace has to separate them and talk both of them down (well he yells at porter and is very soft-spoken and simpering with peregrine) because they wont listen to anyone else.

And she walked to the door without saying anything else. It wasn't the first fight between the two siblings. She also knew that her brother was saying it in anger, but she was really hurt. So she quickly walked out the door and left the temple. Hyuga exhaled angrily and lay down on the ground.

Some of the Rascals bowed respectfully the moment she entered Heaven's gate, and y/n bowed slightly to them. She tried to smile, but it was a little difficult considering how offended she was.

She walked up the stairs and smiled at Koo, who greeted her.

"Good evening y/n-san! You look beautiful as always."

Y/n smiled sadly and thanked him.

"Is Rocky upstairs?"

Koo nodded his head and she asked again,

"Is he available, do you mind if I come in?"

Koo smiled and bent slightly and pointed to the stairs with his hand.

Rocky sensed this different mood in her and knew something was wrong. He stroked the young woman's hair with his hand and gestured with his eyes to the men in the room.

Rocky smiled and took his girlfriend's hand and led her to the sofa. They sat on the sofa together and hugged.

"I know he didn't mean it on purpose... we always fight and always say mean things. But I'm still upset."

Rocky smiled and patted the young woman's shoulder.

“I know how much Hyuga loves you. And how much he cares for you."

Y/n nodded and stroked the necklace around her neck.

"I know... you're right... never mind, I just want to hug you and relax a bit. Okay?"

Rocky smiled and rested his lover's head on his chest. He hugged the young woman tightly and started playing with her hair.

He could feel how upset she was. Y/n seemed very strong, but she was a very fragile person. She always thought of others before herself. That's why he knew that at times like this, she would only come to him.

Hyuga didn't get much sleep that night. He felt guilty for what he said to his older sister. Actually at that moment, he was angry with Ranmaru and didn't want to act like that.

In the morning, when her sister still did not return, he started to worry.

He called his sister several times, but when she didn't pick up, he texted Rocky. It was early morning, but Rocky opened his eyes at the text message and checked his phone.

Seeing the message from Hyuga, he slowly pulled his arm away from the young woman and answered the message.

Hyuga relaxed and sighed at the incoming message. At least his older sister was safe. He could now sleep peacefully.

When Rocky woke up and told y/n that his brother was asking about her and he was worried, y/n didn't want to go any further. She said goodbye to Rocky and left.

Although he wanted to drop her off, she said there was no need and she wanted to go shopping.

After buying a few things from a shop in the Sannoh area, y/n left the shop and waited for a taxi. She was also stepping while waiting.

Her eyes widened as she frowned as a black car suddenly stopped in front of her. Although she wanted to escape, everything happened suddenly and the men caught y/n and forced her into the car. Y/n wanted to resist, but stopped struggling with the knife held to her throat and swallowed.

Those who saw the incident in the vicinity told the Hodlum Squad about the incident. They handed the necklace found on the ground to their leader, and Cobra's eyes opened wide.

"Do you know where Y/n-san is?" At Cobra's words, Rocky and Hyuga looked at Cobra in surprise. Hyuga spoke angrily.

"What does that mean now? What does it have to do with my sister?"

Rocky also asked curiously.

"What's going on Cobra?"

Cobra took a deep breath and took out a necklace from his pocket. He handed it to Hyuga, and Hyuga looked at the necklace in his hand in surprise.

"A young woman was abducted from an alley in Sannoh 2 hours ago. The people around found this necklace. I saw this necklace before on y/n-san."

Hyuga stood up in fear and stood in front of Cobra. He grabbed the blonde man by the collar and pulled him towards him.

"You're telling me now that Doubt kidnapped my sister?"

Rocky spoke with concern

"Y/n left a few hours ago. She said she was going shopping-"

"You let her go alone?"

Hyuga roared in anger and Rocky responded in kind

"You know your sister doesn't like that kind of thing!"

Hyuga sighed angrily and ran his hand through his hair.

"You should have been protecting her!"

"You shouldn't have disrespected her in the first place!"

Cobra intervened when Hyuga and Rocky faced off

"Cut it out! We know Doubt took her. What I don't understand is that Daruma was on good terms with Doubt?"

Hyuga thought about what had happened when Cobra asked Hyuga. His eyes flashed when he remembered what had happened.

"Son of a bitch!"

He explained when everyone looked at him

"He said he wanted to marry Y/n-"

"What?" Rocky yelled angrily, "And you didn't tell me that?"

Hyuga rolled his eyes "I just thought he was just messing with me. And I'm pretty sure he kidnapped her because of you."

Rocky clenched his jaw as Hyuga gave Rocky a look.

"I'm going to kill that son of a bitch. I don't care what happens. I'll burn the whole Sword if he hurts my sister!"

Everyone in the warehouse flinched when Hyuga shouted in anger. Everyone knew how crazy the Daruma leader was, and he would undoubtedly do as he said.

When Y/n opened her eyes again, she was in a warehouse. She was tied to a chair and her whole body ached. The dried blood on her face was making her sick to her stomach.

When someone entered the warehouse again, she lifted her head and looked at the grinning man across from her.

"You turned out to be too resistant. I thought you'd die."

Y/n rolled her eyes and lowered her head. The pain in her body was hurting. Ranmaru angrily approached and raised her head, holding the young woman's hair.

"You would rather die than be with me... do you still agree y/n-chan?"

Y/n smiled and spit in the face of the man across from her.

"I'm more sure now!"

Ranmaru wiped his face and grinned. He punched the young woman hard and y/n fell to the floor with the chair.

"You will beg for death y/n, don't forget those words."

After kicking the young woman for a while, Ranmaru left the warehouse. After writhing on the floor in pain, Y/n looked at the warehouse for a while.

It was dark, but her eyes were getting used to the dark. She didn't know if there was anyone in front of the warehouse, but there was no one inside.

Hyuga was terrorizing as all the Sword members scoured the city. He was beating to death anyone he suspected, the peoples cries could be heard in Daruma. A provoked Hyuga was the worst.

Rocky was gathering information on Doubt. But there was no sign of y/n. And these two men were running out of patience.

Y/n had rubbed the ropes on the ground for hours. Her hands that were rubbing against the ground with the rope hurt so much that her eyes filled with tears.

But she couldn't give up. On the one hand, she was thinking about what his crazy brother could do.

When the ropes suddenly broke, y/n opened her eyes excitedly. She brought her hands in front of her and reached to her feet and untied the ropes.

She didn't care, even though her body hurt every time she moved, and walked to the back of the warehouse.

Luckily, no one thought she could untie the ropes. There was no one behind the warehouse and it was opening into a wooded area.

She felt that she was approaching the city as the trees dwindled. She knew she looked bloodied and scary, but she didn't care.

She headed for the first settlement she saw in front of her. There were old buildings and ruined houses. She recognized this place at first sight.

It was the Nameless street. As soon as Y/n entered the street, she realized that someone was following her.

Even though she was nervous because she entered the street without permission, she stopped and called out.

"I know you're there. Please tell Smoky. I'm y/n Hyuga!"

When no one showed up, y/n continued walking down the street. She ignored the strange looks of the people around her. She was so weak, hurt and tired.

After a few steps, her knees couldn't carry her and she fell to her knees. She started coughing from walking for a long time and groaned in pain

"Y/n-san!"

The young woman stood up at the familiar voice she heard and turned around. She smiled at the Rude Boys' Leader she saw in front of her and stepped towards him.

"Smoky!"

She staggered a few steps later, and Pi and Takeshi quickly grabbed the young woman and gently placed her on the ground.

"Bring water!"

Smoky crouched down and looked at the young woman with concern.

"Everybody's looking for you. Are you okay?"

Y/n nodded

"They might be chasing after me. Sorry, this was the closest Sword zone."

Smoky shook his head

"You don't have to apologize. We're glad you're okay. We were so worried about you. And don't worry, no one can get you out of here before they pass us."

Y/n smiled and took the water Pi was holding out. As she tried to drink the water with trembling hands, the boys looked pityingly at the young woman's bloody hands.

Takeshi took the water bottle and helped the young woman. Y/n smiled and slowly drank the water.

"Thank you"

Pi smiled and helped the young woman get up. Pi was worried when they saw that she was too tired to stand.

"Y/n-san, I can carry you. You're injured, please don't tire yourself any further."

Y/n reluctantly agreed, and the red-haired youth took the young woman on his back.

"Takeshi, inform all Sword. Inform Daruma first, we need to stop Hyuga as soon as possible."

Takeshi nodded and left the nameless street with a few guys.

When Y/n opened her eyes, Lala and Pi were patching up her hands. When the young woman turned her head, she met Smoky and Smoky offered a small smile.

"They will notify Hyuga, I think you should go to the hospital."

Y/n nodded

"Thank you for everything."

Smoky smiled "Everyone here respects you. So do I. The kids love you. Everyone will do anything to protect you without a second thought."

Y/n smiled and nodded

"I'm grateful. And well... sorry for my brother's wrath..."

Smoky smiled as Pi and Lala giggled

"Family is everything. I can understand him." Everyone looked at the door with the man who had quickly entered the room at that time. Hyuga stood at the entrance of the room and stared at his older sister for a few seconds.

Y/n smiled and teased

"Do I really look that ugly?"

Although she chuckled, Hyuga quickly came to the bed where the young woman lay and Pi stepped aside.

Hyuga studied her sister for a while. There were wounds and bruises on her face. Moreover, she was covered in blood. Her hands were bandaged. Who knows what wounds he hadn't seen yet.

"I'm fine... it just hurts a little."

Hyuga shook his head.

"I'll take you to the hospital. The guys are waiting outside."

Y/n nodded and smiled.Hyuga lifted the blanket draped over the young woman and gently took her in his arms. As the young woman groaned in pain, Hyuga cursed and apologized.

He then turned to Smoky.

"Thank you. I won't forget it."

Smoky shook his head

"Just calm down a bit and take care of her." Hyuga nodded seriously as Y/n chuckled at what she heard and led the young woman out of the building.

Hyuga was sitting in the hospital corridor with the twins while the doctors were doing their examinations.

He looked in that direction with the leader who had suddenly entered the corridor. Rocky nervously moved to the seats with Koo and stood in front of Hyuga.

"Is he okay?"

Hyuga nodded his head.

"The doctors say there is nothing life-threatening, but she has fractures in her body. And she has bruises and sores all over her, she'll be in a lot of pain for a while."

Rocky nodded his head as he clenched his fist in anger. He was angry, at himself, at everyone, at everything.

"Did you find anything? Do you know where that motherfucker is?"

Rocky shook his head "We found a clue but he got away"

Hyuga shook his head angrily. "I'm going to kill him with my own hands."

Rocky didn't say anything. He was thinking the same thing, but all he cared about right now was whether his girlfriend was okay.

When the doctor left the room they both stood in front of the doctor "The patient's condition is good. As I said, there is no life-threatening danger, but she has many wounds and fractures. Healing will take time. You can see the patient, but please do not tire."

After they both nodded, Hyuga placed his hand on Rocky's shoulder.

"You go first, I've already seen her."

Rocky nodded and walked in. He smiled when he entered the room and saw y/n fiddling with the bed control. And he caught her attention with a fake cough.

Y/n smiled broadly at the person she saw when she lifted her head.

"Hey, it's been a long time"

Rocky nodded and sat down in the chair next to the bed. The young man's face fell with bruises on her face and bandages on her hands. Y/n sighed after realizing this.

"It's been an adventurous day, huh?"

Rocky rolled his eyes "Are you okay? I'm really asking y/n. He didn't touch you, did he?"

Y/n shook her head when she understood the question and Rocky sighed deeply.

"Does it hurt a lot?"

Y/n smiled and nodded "I don't feel much thanks to the painkillers. But I'm very sleepy."

Rocky shook his head

"I... I should have come with you. I should have guessed this would happen. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you."

Y/n frowned "How would we know? Rocky, it's not your fault. It was my fault-"

Rocky quickly shook his head. "It's my job to protect you y/n!"

Y/n sighed "You're not god, Rocky. You can't always be by my side or protect me. So stop that stupid thought, it wasn't your fault."

Rocky didn't say anything, though he wasn't convinced.

"Where's Hisa? He worries me."

"He's sitting outside."

Y/n nodded "I know he blames himself too and wants to do something stupid. Please stop him Rocky. I'm not strong enough to stop him, but I don't want him to do anything stupid-"

"I know exactly what he wants to do y/n and I can't blame him."

"This won't make me happy. It won't change what happened. I just don't want any more trouble. Please..."
