any tips on how to draw in the splatoon style?

Ive been trying over and over to answer this question but i simply can't, cus i dont know how i make stuff, i did 2 tutorials in the past and they are simply me going "yeah you just go black in your mind and then come back and boom!" I tried to film myself a few times but still it's simply me zoning out filling a canvas of millions of sketches and then just drawing and drawing. There's no step by step thing, I simply just go BRBRBRBRBBRR and like adding really REALLY specific details and then BRBRBRBBR.

I tried hard, to think, why I make it accurate, I honestly tried for over 4 years to do splatoon looking art before i even opened this account, especially for commissions or doing more splatband art, people can give you feedback and if you're good enough they'll pay you.

I really came to think I was the best to just hate the art i did 3 days after, I did the "pufuu" moment trying to fake leake art or something and you can really put there if ppl is 1) so desesperated for new art 2) youre good at it

Then I tried to think, well did i studied the style? Yesss,,, at the begining, then i starts to differ as different artists besides Inoue, and his style also develops, so basically as long it fits,,

These 3 drawings just look complely different from each other and still it simply makes them more unique.

"But then how you make it splatoon?" You simply can't, cus it is not just one person, there is a lot, make it your own, give it your own twist, but, what about brushes, THATS what gives the style... right?

this art LOOKS officinal, but it isnt, thre's barely any rough edges like in original, there's some shading but it is not like in the original

is it the anatomy? neither, you can clearly see how they change every time how they draw inklings, sometimes the draw eyebrows in place, sometimes they round the faces sometimes they color pink they mouth despite the ink color. IT IS NOT JUST ONE PERSON.

hi omg !!!! i was feeling a lil unmotivated so this took me a while to respond im SO SOS OS SOS SO SORRY PLS FORGIVE ME <3!!!!! art block was beating my ass

but if you're wondering about the art on my OLDDD banner i only use ibis paint x ! it depends but most of the time i use the pencil brushes that the app already has ! for ryoko (pink haired oc) i use ochako or neijire (also hagakure but that was like twice) as the base because they have pretty similar eyeshapes ! for my other oc himari i just use character arts with sharper eye shapes like jirou or toga

! i use hori sketches most of the time and colored official art if im feeling bolder and i have a specific blending brush i use for shading (see below) ! for sketches after im doing changing it i use a line art pen (see below) and color code it based on what i think might look cute, i kinda just draw how i think it would look prettiest😭

for example ! :

this is ryokos hair color, but i dont want it to look dull or 'ugly' so i kinda make it pinker/redder depending on how i want it to look if that makes sense !

in this drawing, i wanted everything to look more vibrant since her quirk is active, so i wanted the shading color of her shirt to be a more vibrant color like this, until i decided i liked what it looked like !

and cus my artstyle is super inspired by horikoshis art it kinda just works out for me lol!

the anime artstyle is a little difficult to do for me cus its different from horis line art, but i do pretty much the same thing there !

Im glad to be of some help ! I dont think you'd be bothering anyone considering thats what most mogai blogs are for ! (^ ^ ) but its good 02 know how to do things on your own。

I do go over flag making but my biggest past inspo's who also contributed to me wanting to start my own coining blog are @scytheral , @laughdiamond & i do believe @puriette aswell

I remove backgrounds with a site called background remover ! Its kinda crummy ( esp if ur editing ) so u may have to clean it up with whatever u use for editting or flag making if pawssible。

I use ibis for litterally everything & its free on everything but desktop。i woulfnt recommend a bg remover app since its just a waste of space if you can just do it with a site or ibis as i do

The flag making process can be really quick or annoying as ever,,, i use laughdiamonds stripes religiously on my flags & some other sources sometimes。anything i use & anything like that is on my little side blog @boyfiegender ! Its mostly editing stuff but you may find things useful for flag making

Im not sure how one would explain it besides pick color & bucket tool (@_@ )

i know it sounds stupid for someone like me, whos horrible at art, to give tips but these actually help me so i thought id share them and also give do's and dont's with them

trace:

DONT : claim as yours, do all the time, trace it exactly, post

DO : do it occasionally, i use it to try to study a new art style i like; experiment; try to change up a few things, if you do post then credit the creator who made the art

experiment:

DONT : do something out of your comfort zone, make it adjustable to you; not others

DO : make something that you like; it doesnt have to meet others expectations

compare (hear me out on this one):

DONT : compare negatively, compare to often; it will bring down your self-esteem

DO : compare the stuff you like about other art; try to combine everything you like about other artists and that will help!

do art often:

DONT : do it constantly; unless you have the time, then its fine

DO : do it a lot; but only if you have the time

make art that isnt meant to be seen:

DONT : ???

DO : use it as a way to experiment new things; not all art is meant to be seen

art is a way to express yourself, not meet others expectations, you dont have to immediately know how to draw the mona lisa, and there isnt only one art style, make what makes YOU happy, dont worry about what others say about your art, if it makes you happy, then go with it, dont let anybody bring you down

whether you make traditional, digital, pixel, 3D, 2D, any type of art, you will be accepted because its what makes you happy and you want to do it, one day you will meet your dreams, or have a different one

okay hi so basically:

ygo doesny seem to give a shit about how souls work in egyptian myth but. basically, it would be funny if yami was a ba while appearing to yugi (not while possessing him obv). hes comically small and unintimidating but still a force to be reckoned with. its pretty much just a visual au and im genuinely surprises no ones done it yet?

akh-atem is different, i havent watched dsod yet so maybe that would fuck with canon compliance but. if you dont know, an akh is a complete, elevated soul created by a special union between the ka and the ba. i dont believe everyone in egypt got this treatment (it was a very specific and lengthy process) but atem is a cool guy he deserves it. Mildly fucks with canon but i imagine some of the remaining tomb keepers perform the necessary rituals until the creation of his akh is complete.

though atem was already chilling in the afterlife as a ba, now hes like. one with the gods. a being of pure light with insane amounts of power that can travel between earth and the afterlife (bas can already do this but shhh). what is he going to do with this? probably pay the living he knew a visit. sometimes. domino city is a bit far from egypt and atem is really trying to relax now. still, he is watching over yugi in this state and trying to keep him safe even if yugi has no idea. he can also appear in dreams! and i think he can make himself known when he is visiting earth though 1. he is scary 2. he is selective so he doesnt ever do it unless he has to. i have a scenario in my head where yugi visits atems tomb and tries to give him something (cards maybe) abd then hes like. damn i miss him. and atem flies down from the heavens as bright as the sun and jyst shows up in front of yugi and is like HOLY SHIT YUGI HI and yugi is reasonably horrified at first. luckily being a powerful ascended spirit doesnt change your personality

INFO on the akh design in question:

- i had to make my own buuut it resembles an ibis (has a human head of his likeness too). However akhs can take any form they desire. atem can look like his old self if he wants. you just csnt really fly around like that ykno

- usually, only his two Main Eyes arw open. his forehead eye opens if hes doing some scary magical spirit shit (his other two will be closed).

- his wing eyes only open if he is showing himself to someone (letting them be able to see him, making himself known), or threatening someone (im sure he has his reasons). each individual wing eye produces INSANE amounts of light and when all are open van give him the appearance of being a pure white glowing being. It will also burn your retinas right off. he is one with the sun after all

- atem is human in the afterlife. he only becomes a fucked up shadow bird if he needs to travel down and hang out on earth and stuff

I had some free time and I've been wanting to try to create a design based on Rilian for a very long time but there was always no time or energy. So I found a blank sheet, drew a sketch, I took a photo and painted it in an Ibis.

At first, I wanted to do art like she as Genshin char but I dont play in Genshin now (Maybe temporarily, maybe I won't play anymore, I don't know ) The influence of genshin and other gacha games remained, originally the red accents were hints at the pyro Vision or thing like this.

����About design: I consider Rilian to be a lover of puffy dresses, but I think that if she had to wear something more practical, she would still be a lover of bows and ruffles. Even in breeches, she would strive for look more ✨luxurious✨ than ever 💫

🎵About draw in her hand: The picture with the nun is the worst part, I don't know how to make it better, maybe later, when there is less backlog at work, I can find a solution to all the shortcomings of the sketch. But not now.

Uhhh… Sorry to bother you but I have a question, please feel free to ignore it. Do you use cloud storage or something similar? If yes, what one do you use (or recommend)?

I started drawing digitally for about a year only, I'm very confused (it's fun tho :D). Using Ibis paint too. For some time I'm having some issues when saving my finished pieces and keeping their quality. When I upload them to my Google Drive (I dont know other good alternatives yet) some of the pieces look less detailed :/

If it's okay, could you share some artist wisdom? I'm unsure how I should save my art, the cloud storage is because I don't want my stuff if my tablet breaks or the app stops working/glitches.

I don't use cloud storage unfortunately, I usually save my pieces on my device and then upload them to Google Photos... Speaking of Google Photos, I think it's better than Drive for images. The storage is limited but if you're just saving your art it should be fine. Remember that by saving on cloud storage you're saving the entire artwork, if you just want to save the finished result download it as a PNG and upload it to Photos.

You don't seem to be the first person having trouble with cloud storage unfortunately, and as someone who's changed phones a lot and has lost a large amount of art, it sucks and it's basically inevitable. But what sucked more was losing my brushes, so remember to save the Qr codes of your custom brushes if anything because I don't think Cloud Storage saves those at all.

I recommend looking more into Image Resolution as a concept, it took me a bit to get it. I'm not explaining it here because I don't feel qualified to, instead I recommend looking it up yourself- ON THAT NOTE if you don't understand a concept in English always remember to look it up in your first original language. It seems obvious but it's very easy to forget. I know I do, constantly.

first way u could do it (and the way i use most often, is to use a website called quickpicturetools.com ! you select the 'blur edges' option, and then you can mess with the setting for the blur to see what you like. btw, the hex code for dark mode on rentry is #262626 <3 and the rgb (if u'll ever need it, is r38 g38 b38) this website is pretty useful in general for making small edits to a photo for any purpose <] second way you could do it is to go to a website called online-image-editor.com ! u go to the advanced setting s, and select the option that says viginette ! then u just pick which blur u like best :o i dont rlly like using this site for blurring borders since there are a limited amout of options, but if u do then use it ! lol lastly there is blurring manually by using an art software, such as ibis, krita, csp, any program made for art. you can use the air brush tool to manually blur the border of the image after copying and pasting it into the canvas, or just making the image itself the canvas. if ur also into it, u could instead (make the image the canvas, or copy n paste then delete the bg) erase the borders of the image w the soft eraser, or turning the airbrush tool into an eraser if ur program allows it. i pref erasing, mostly cause it involves less color matching 4 the grey of dark mode, also cause it'll look good for light or dark mode ! !! so thats about it, i hope this helped for all you folk out there that wanna make a rentry look pretty, but didnt know how ! <] below r some example of what the 2 sites look like, in order as mentioned :3

Do you have any tips for drawing? 

uhh well i developed my art style by looking at other peoples art

when i first began seriously drawing i was about 11, and i traced a lot

back then i didn’t know what tracing was so pls don’t blame me lol but tracing helped me a lot (if you trace don’t claim it as yours, ask permission and make sure the og artist lets you, credit them always)

i cant really help honestly because my style is a bit strange (and isn’t really similar to any artist i’ve ever seen) tho i suggest to look at refs

for people, anatomy is really important, unless you wanna have your own anatomy style thing (blocky legs, etc)

sorry if this doesn’t help lol i dont really help with drawing tips often

another thing that helped me with anatomy a lot were collab art pictures

this is one, i just got it from google . you can download ibis paint x, which is free, and has these collab art thingies where you can trace over and find your style

if you wanna do anything like anthropomorphic related i cant really help witht wht lol i don’t draw furries

i usually draw people, and for anything else, i use refs (items, backgrounds)

sorry to bother but i have a few questions! curious if you ever used other art programs besides sai and more about art things

- have you ever used sai 2? i think its still being refined

- whats your art program “progression” if you ever used a program before sai exactly, like ex: ibispaint -> fire alpaca -> sai

- are you a many layers artist with a seperate lineart layer and color each individual spots like skin, hair, eyes and etc in different layers? or do you combine the lineart and colors and just paint over it? or maybe you have multiple ways?

- do you use references a lot? or do you “wing” how stuff looks like? (which could honestly show te growth when it looks so right which you do always! your art is amazing?)

i still have so many questions but i dont want to bother by making this ask too long, sorry about that!

i have sai2 downloaded, but i think i got the wrong version (the one that has a time trial thing and stops you from saving the files after a certain period of time). and i kinda just never bothered switching to it amd looking for a normal version? i know sai2 has a lot more options and textures and what not, but i like my old sai1 more for some reason.

for the art program progression, hmmmm. it's pretty much all sai1 i think! i have fire alpaca installed and still use it to make gifs and animations or to import text to sai / manage files / edit minecraft textures / etc, but it was never my main program. i drew some stuff in ibispaint as a kid before i had my computer, but i think back then i also mainly drew on paper, ibis wasn't my "main". never got into photoshop, never used any other programs.

for the layers. i do use them a lot, but like, for testing mostly? for example, when i want to change something in the sketch, i copy the layer and then compare the old and the new versions, deleting the one i don't like. i color and shade on one layer, but when i want to check how it'll look with different colors, i make a new layer and then compare them. when i want to fix something, like redraw the eye or clean up the sketch a bit or see how the character will look in a coat intstead of a vest, i make the new layer on top and just paint over everything. and eventually merge all the layers together and keep adding on top. so, i make a lot of layers, but then i also delete/merge a lot of them.

i used to use a lot of references and put all of them in the backgrounds of my drawings with low opacity to create this effect of busyness but also so i didn't haveto switch tabs constantly. but i stopped doing it for some reason. i do still use references, mostly for things that i don't have much experience drawing or want to be accurate. like armor, muscle structures, certain clothing elements, instruments, background elements, etc. and i wing things like poses, anatomy, expressions, clothing, lighting, composition, whatever else. i also recently find myself looking at a lot of art of other artists for inspiration, but not necessarily as references? like, the specific way that one artist drew hair poking out of the bandana, or the specific way that other artist drew a shadow on the glasses, or the specific way that other other artist drew a tail, its inspiring and i go "huh, i never thought of that" and i try to implement it in my art. well, i guess kind of like references.

This ask had me reflecting on my art style. So i pulled up some of my old and new work .

The first one is mini Bobby , i couldn't draw him at all, but i still wanted some sort of drawing so i decided to make a Gacha Bobby, I mean hey, something is better than nothing right ?

Say what you want but I'm still very fond of this little guy.

Then I made a MC × Bobby fanart. But even in that, his face was no mucho gusto and it came out very blurry and the pens lines were too thick

Then came Superman Bobby , better and more good looking than the previous crack Bobby but still very blurry.

One of the reasons was , I was using a pen style that was too thick and that really defined the outlines rather than the actual picture and when resized , it got really blurry and the app that i was using had very limited resources .

Then I switched to the app im using now - Ibis paint. It's free , has tons of features and brushes , less precise and professional than procreate but it's still very much up there. I changed my brush from a drawing pen to a pencil which has thin strokes. The result is definitely better

And I fell more in love as i drew him

I have been working on this fanart for days. Not because it's very complex or has too much details , but because my final exams have commenced, so I only draw the FACE of the islander i have in mind for the project to reward myself at the end of the day.

Today I finished drawing the faces of my second last and last islander who are going to be featured on the fanart. I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO DO HAIR HIGHLIGHTS. i basically never shade because I dont know how and I was planning on learning that during my vacation BUT I finally tried out hair shading for Jin and Bruno. And I'm loving the result.

Tadaaaaaa!!!!!! Made my day tbh can't wait to include this in the final fanart with the other three boys ( can you take the vibe and guess who they are?)
