Introducing…Do Nothing

Pop-culture references, a rambling stream of consciousness and jerky post-punk quirkiness; Do Nothing are a band that are equal parts playful piss-takers as they are frustrated and angry at modern life. The Nottingham based outfit made ears prick up in 2018 with their single ‘Waitress’. While 2019’s ‘Gangs’, shot through with a booming bassline and a dislocated cowbell march, and ‘Handshakes’ tarnished beauty garnered even more attention. This has meant their recently released debut EP ‘Zero Dollar Bill’ had a certain weight of expectation resting on its shoulders. The group’s primary outing has been met with widespread acclaim as it looks to pave the band’s way to something special.

At the epicentre of this beguiling mix of kitchen-sink drama and angular rhythms you’ll find the enigmatic Chris Bailey; the peculiar blend of troubadour, rambling mad-man and used car salesman (thanks to his natty grey oversized suit). Completed by Kasper Sandstrom, Charlie Howarth and Andy Harrison, the Do Nothing frontman’s eccentricities has found Bailey compare his own style to that of ol’ Gill from the Simpsons, , the infamous down-on-his-luck salesperson. The group’s mouthpiece is quite clear when it comes to his on-stage persona; he’s acting out a character, a distorted version of himself. This is where the intrigue comes in, as he can easily switch from the randomness of “please don’t stab me while I’m eating” found on ‘New Life’ and the plain speaking sardonic barb on the lithe, funkiness of ‘Lebron James’ “the results are in and it looks like everyone gets a big old slice of nothing”. Multiple listens unearth lyrical gem after lyrical gem, as Bailey’s constant stream of words tend to throw up references or oddities you might not have heard the first few times around. Like nods to (deep breath) the aforementioned yellow cartoon family, Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, a half time speech by a West Virginia American football coach (obvs), snooker player John Higgins, The Truman Show, ENRON, 2001 A Space Odyssey and the Sopranos – to name (more than) a few.

Imagine if Peep Show was set in the East Midlands and Jeremy hadn’t sold his soul to the big beat manifesto but instead roped in Martin to his post-punk band (that’s really fucking good), for him to verbalise his weird inner monologue to the world.
