Super Donkey Kong '99 was a 1999 unauthorized Donkey Kong platformer for the Sega Genesis. While it used many assets taken from official Donkey Kong games, the level design was, surprisingly for an unauthorized game of this kind, completely original.
Curiously, in addition to renditions of Donkey Kong music, the game featured remixes of music from Mario games. Above is a version of the Super Mario Bros. underwater theme, which appears to be based on the Super Mario Bros. title theme from Super Mario All-Stars.

Nintendo Music
I'll go ahead and say it - Nintendo is just weird. Earlier the year they posted a big FAQ on how piracy is evil and everyone's a criminal - because Nintendo loves that they have a following, but absolutely despises their fan-base.
Since then, we got the baffling Nintendo Alarmo - because I guess Nintendo saw the $99 clock apps on the eShop and figured they'd do one better ... and then since yesterday, Nintendo introduced ... Nintendo Music
I downloaded this thing and gave it a try. I've some information already available on the website and app to type down here just so it's in the same place - but also some first impressions and personal takes. Let's-a go.
Data Collection: As with any app, this thing wants your data. It's "the usual", such as what normally is available to apps; log-in info, what phone you use, location and app activity. I mention this, because knowing that your data will be collected and used means you can put a stop to it if necessary. That said, the data collected via the app can be completely deleted by request. (given that I'm in the EU, I'm hoping this is GDPR compliant) Side-note: I'm guessing this might be also be collecting data for Nintendo Alarmo themes. That seems like a Nintendo thing to do.
The App Itself Completely free to download and install, but needs a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership to function. Opens the browser rather than going in-app for your log-in efforts. Feels a little sluggish. Looks and feels like a YouTube Music/Spotify baby. Also immediately tries to be cool by giving you 'character playlists'. I think that's oddly charming.
Music Selection Yeah, this is a meager selection. I think they'll be doing the thing where they will drip-feed more music, since they immediately ask you to turn notifications on when more music drops. So far we got: Switch: Pikmin 4 / PkMn Scarlet & Violet / Splatoon 3 / ACNH / Kirby Star Allies / Super Mario Odyssey / Mario Kart 8 DX / TLOZ: BotW Wii: Super Mario Galaxy / Wii Channels Nintendo DS: Tomodachi Collection / Nintendogs Gamecube: Metroid Prime Game Boy Advance: Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade Nintendo 64: TLoZ: Ocarina of Time / Star Fox 64 SNES: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Donkey Kong Country Gameboy: Kirby's Dream Land / Dr.Mario NES: Metroid / Metroid (Famicom) / Mario Bros. The promotional material also lists F-Zero's "Mute City", so we'll see a drop soon enough.
What the app does/allows:
This thing's a streaming service, but does something incredibly un-Nintendo as a treat. I call it that, because Nintendo famously has floundered with a lot of online things .. but I am pleasantly surprised:
Allows song extensions up to an hour in-app (!)
Allows individual downloads for offline listening(!!)
Allows playing the music even when the app is in the background and if the screen is off(!!!). The last point is interesting, because while dedicated music apps tend to do that per default, the most used third-party method for streaming Nintendo's music needs you to pay a premium to do that.
Conclusion: I might not like that this is 'another app' in the pile of apps and distribution systems, but this is a start to solving Nintendo's distribution problem (see the bit about piracy at the top) - which went doubly so for their music. It makes it extra bizarre to me that they allow you to download tracks. Previously, either games had to have a 'music' feature, there had to be specific sales for OST's or people had to go for ... third-party methods.
If you have NSO, consider this app a bonus. I'm hoping this won't get enshittified within half a year.

âgaming asksâ
đ original post đ
First game you can remember playing?
either tetris or skifree or space cadet pinball
Last game you played?
BLACK BIRD by onion games for nintendo switch!! itâs basically âdefenderâ but with that great onion games/lovedelic art style. itâs really great tho there seems to be some occasional slowdown on the switch.
Games youâve played?
i have played âvirtual boy wario landâ, âpac-man VS.â, and ârockstar games presents table tennisâ, among others.
Game(s) youâre currently playing?
this is too long a list but: iâm currently playing BLACK BIRD, super mario 3D world, bowserâs fury, hitman 3 (which i beatâ but am nowhere near finished with), nioh 2 (only just started but rly liked), golf on mars, ACNH. (also unfinished: ghostrunner, RDR2, prodeus, âthe dark pictures: man of medanâ, sludge life, metro exodus, tony hawk pro skater 1+2 (finished 1 but not 2))
Game you plan to play next?
more BLACK BIRD! i think i might have been at the final boss. that might put me in the mood for some MILLION ONION HOTEL or maybe restarting DANDY DUNGEON(, both from onion games).
Games on your to-play list?
i just bought âThe Ninja Warriors Once Again, or: The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriorsâ, ODDWORLD: strangerâs wrath HD, and âSky Racketâ when they were on sale on the eshop recently. i also downloaded SINE MORA EX, might load that up whenever iâm done with BLACK BIRD. i might try to play more cyberpunk 2077 before tim rogersâs review hits (though i didnât really like the game at all). i rly wanna play more nioh 2 as well. generally, prey (2017), sekiro, RE4, pathologic 2, and rain world.
Game youâd get if time / money was no object?
chess, netrunner, magic the gathering. or rainbow six seige
Favorite game?
DOOM (1993), or TETRIS EFFECT, or moon: Remix RPG Adventure (or donkey kong: jungle beat)
Favorite game franchise ?
donkey kong, âsoulsâ, or mario
Favorite game in a series?
mario 3, f-zero GX
Favorite game to play?
f-zero gx or god hand. maybe sekiro. using those gamecube shoulder buttons to slide side to side in F0GX and then pulling both for those 90° turns feels amazing. no dodge has ever felt better than using the right stick in âgod handâ.
Most frustrating game to play?
tetris 99 is just not what i like abt tetris. dirt 5 feels like competitive plastic chewing. forced TAA, crashes, jerkweed voice fuckers spitting in your ear constantly, gross dutch angled race countdown, bogus music đ bogus! rockstar games also frustrate me (tho i like RDR2 & table tennis (& i probably like the manhunt games)); those awful menus do nothing but clunk. (having to hit âAâ scroll the map in the map tab in GTA V? when the map is the only thing you can interact with on screen? đ)
Comfort game?
mario kart 8 dx, puyo puyo tetris
Underrated game?
moon: Remix RPG Adventure, kane & lynch 2: dog days, rock band unplugged
Game that reminds you of your childhood?
lego star wars, âstar wars battlefront ii: the 2004 oneâ
Game youâre really good at?
guideline tetris. iâm also good at star wars battlefront ii but only on mos eisley and only against bots
Game with the most playtime?
across different versions, tetris. on my switch ACNH takes the cake over BOTW, puyo puyo tetris, and mario kart 8 dx. on steam itâs dirt 4.
Favorite console?
PS2 & GBA SP (which just both happen to be the first consoles i had as a kid). honorable mentions to the gamecube, the personal computer (which is the actual best but does not count, i suppose), and âthe switch proâ.
Favorite game ending?
nier automata or moon: Remix RPG Adventure or APE OUT
Favorite genre / kind of game?
racing games (see: f-zero GX, burnout 2, outrun 2, dirt 4, mario kart 8 dx, hotshot racing, etc.), âstylish character actionâ (god hand, bayonetta 2) or âhard actionâ (god hand, ape out, disc room, tormentor X punisher), platformers
Favorite side games / quests?
the baker in moon: Remix RPG Adventure, siegward in dark souls iii, dark souls/bloodborne quests in general
Favorite cheat codes / glitches?
my fav cheat code is the one in lego star wars that changes all guns to coffee mugs. in super mario land 2: six golden coins you can make mario fall into the gameâs memory and walk directly to the end of the game.
Favorite game mechanism?
the directional dodges in GOD HAND. the push/grab in APE OUT. looping level design, like doom or dark souls or metroid. getting a tetris.
Favorite characters from a game?
wario, bayonetta, everyone in moon, donkey kong, the guy from panic restaurantÂ
Favorite boss battle?
beauvoir from nier automata during route B. also a fan of the final boss in dark souls iii.Â
Favorite game soundtrack?
katamari damacy, moon, mario 3, botw, ape out
Most calming game soundtrack?
tetris effect, DKC, firelink shrine theme/DS1 menu music
Most energetic / pump up game soundtrack?
ape out, those digital hardcore songs in TAIKO NO TATSUJIN
Favorite boss fight music?
something from splatoon or bloodborne probably
Favorite game aesthetic?
megaman legends, sonic mania, mario 3, the wario land games, moon
Favorite character designs?
moon, chulip, the wario land series, katamari, panic restaurant
Favorite game fanart / fanartist?
splendidland
Favorite game fanfiction / author?
those splendidland comics where mario says fuck or where smash brothers characters are gay for each other. also this CYELATM
Do you make fancontent for any games?
i got ok at drawing wario a while ago. i should practice again
What streamers / playthroughs would you recommend?
jerma985: jurassic park trespasser, saw 1 & 2. giant bomb: âgiant bomb makes marioâ, âhitsmasâ. aurateur.
What skins are on your controllers?
my own :-(
Are you a completionist?
no, i do play slowly though. as far as being a series/franchise completionist, i am bad about thinking i need context for new games by playing old games in the same genre first
Has anything made you ragequit a game?
ornsein & smough :-( bad menus, slow tutorials in lots of games
What do your customizable characters look like?
green skinned ladies with mustaches, balding or with a bob
What game would you suggest to a non-gamer?
golf on mars, bad chess

Donkey Kong Z Episode 10
*Cranky kong appears on the black screen*
Cranky: You're still watching this crap?! Well as long as you're here, might as well see how it ends right? Oh and one more thing, wear a mask! Just because people took vaccines doesn't mean COVID-19's completely gone. ALWAYS wear a mask, doesn't matter if anyone has taken theirs off, they're idiots compared to you! Be smart about it and don't leave without one! *Walks off*
Dragon Ball Z Opening Theme Song Rock the Dragon 720p HD (Short)
Falco: Last time on donkey kong Z. We found out that the two fruit gems were on planet Aquas so we had to swim our way down to get them. Of course, there were a few snags on the way but DK managed to take care of it for us. Somehow dingodile managed to slip passed our fingers with the honeydew melon fruit gem but a Gengar named ghaster'hauns or G'Hauns snatched it back from them and return it to us. So far things are looking up for us but I wouldn't relax just yet, there's still more to the story. So let's get a move on shall we?
Episode 10: Hot enough for ya? (DK and the crossover gang arrived on Planet Titania to find the kiwi fruit gem only for them to be ambushed by gnorc and Kritter desert soldiers and grocks. Star wolf fought against DK and Diddy in and out of their ships alongside Fox, Falco and Slippy.)
DK: 99 bottles of beer on the wall! 99 bottles of beer! Take one down, pass- Falco: Do NOT finish that sentence. DK: Kay.
*The great fox kept flying in space*
DK: Are we there yet? Falco: No. DK: Are we there yet? Krystal: Not yet. DK: Are we there yet? Falco: No. DK: Are we there yet? Falco: Swear to god If you keep on asking I will grab my blaster and shoot you in the mouth with it. DK: Okay.
*The room went quiet as everyone else is doing their own thing then DK started making noises by patting his pecs then started making popping noises with his mouth*
Falco: DK! For five minutes, can you not be yourself? FOR FIVE MINUTES!!! DK: Okay. Falco: *Types on the buttons to concentrate* DK: Shhh. *Went up to falco quietly* Krystal: *Slowly covers my ears* DK: *Delivers an earth-shaking series of slamming slaps to the ground to cause shock waves*
*The entire ship felt the vibration including falco as he fell over*
Link: Don't do that! DK: Sorry, you can pretty much guess I'm bored. Link: Ya think?! Yoshi: *Giggles* That was fun! Do it again! ^_^ Link: -_- Fox: At least we're here. DK: Well FINALLY!
Gotta be the last fruit gem / Finally some good news - Briefing 1 Star Fox Assault Music Extended [Music OST][Original Soundtrack]
Slippy: I've analyzed the kiwi fruit gem. And it's the only fruit gem on planet titania. Fox: Which means it's the last one. We have more fruit gems than k rool so he'll want the rest of it when he gets the kiwi fruit gem. Krystal: We need to be smart about this, K Rool or kaliga might be waiting for us. DK: Then we take the battle to him. Fox: DK, the last time we did that, kaliga almost killed you. DK: Oh yeah... Peppy: Sorry but I'm with fox on this one, we gotta plan this one out carefully. DK: Great, more waiting. -_- Lucario: "DK, Diddy, come with me." *Walks off*
*Diddy and DK looked to each other then walked off following Lucario*
Lucario: *In the training with DK and diddy* "Have you ever heard of the super kong black?" Diddy: Your dad told us about that right? DK: Yeah...I think it has something to do with a black aura. Something about achieving enlightenment and eternal calmness when doing so. Lucario: "Before we head out to planet titania, I must help you two find your super kong form black. But in order to do this, you must contact yourselves with the black aura. Through meditation." DK: You sure that's a good idea? The last time I did that I was "too" relaxed and ended up sleeping. Lucario: *Sat down and close my eyes* Diddy: I think he's serious DK. DK: Okay, don't say I didn't warn you.
*Diddy and DK sat down in front of Lucario and closed their eyes*
Meditating with Lucario / Super Kong Form Black Obtained - Soul Calibur III OST: Labyrinth of Moonlight
Lucario: Now, picture yourselves in darkness, grab hold of the darkness and embrace it as if it is your own. You've experienced physical trauma, negative emotions, and depression, focus on both of those things and learn to overcome them. Focus on those thoughts but don't let them overtake you. Remember to visualize, and concentrate. Diddy: *My heart rate speeds up as I'm having flash back trauma with Kaliga and whimpers* ... DK: .... *Remains completely still as I meditate*
*The entire background became black while flashes of events appear one way into the next, black aura grows within DK but diddy's hesitates because of his traumatic experience with fighting kaliga*
Lucario: "Focus Diddy. Face your fears." Diddy: "I'm sorry I can't help it..." Lucario: "You are strong, you are brave. Face your fears. Stand up tall." DK: "Here's an idea. Alter the events you previously had and make them good ones instead." Diddy: "Alter my memories...hmm..."
*Instead of watching DK being slaughtered to death by kaliga, the event bubble changes to where both DK and diddy defeated kaliga and saved corneria as well as playfully humiliating kaliga on planet fichina as both of them high-five, diddy's black aura begins to form as he feels calm and relaxed. Both DK and Diddy's black aura began to strengthen and grow. Outside of meditation, they both transformed into Super Kong Form Black in sync*
Lucario: *Opened my eyes and stood back up* "Congrats boys, you two are ready." SKB Diddy: I feel weird.. SKB DK: This is awesome! I feel ten times stronger! Lucario: "With black aura, you can use it more fluently. Since you've adapted your negative energies, it transfers into the aura, making you much stronger than you were in other super kong forms." SKB DK: Kaliga won't know what hits him. This will be our surprise attack. SKB Diddy: Yeah, I'm ready for anything now.
*The three of them went back to everyone*
Fox's Encouraging Speech - SDGF Friends
Fox: So listen everyone, whether we get the final fruit gem or not. We have to put an end to the villains that come before us all. It's been a long journey for all of us but we're going to make this mission count however it may be. We also had a lot of ups and downs but in the end, we'll all remember them well. So let's just do our best and finish the fight with everything we got left.
*Everyone claps and cheers for fox*
Fox: ROB, onward to planet titania. ROB64: Affirmative.
Planet Titania - Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (PS1) Soundtrack - Fire Trial (Gamerip)
*The great fox flew down into titania where the heat is extremely brutal and there is nothing but sand and dust everywhere*
Fox: I'll be on the landmaster. Krystal, Slippy, and Falco will be on arwings. Falco: The rest of you will fight along side with DK and Diddy. We have grown quite a stronger bond this journey and let's keep it at that. Slippy: You got that right. ^_^
This heat is unbearable! - Final Fantasy X-2 Music - Bikanel Desert
*Outside of the great fox, they are excavating for the kiwi fruit gem*
Diddy: Woowee! I'm one sweaty monkey... DK: Yeah the heat is pretty brutal, slippy did say that the fruit gem is hidden within the sand. Diddy: Hopefully we find it soon otherwise my fur would burn out. If only Slippy would invent a cooling suit. Klonoa: I would use my wind ring but the wind might accidentally get caught with the dust and the heat. Koriju: *Speaking Japanese in anger cause of the heat* Yoshi: *Digs fast with my hands then ran to another section and kept digging* Falco: See anything yet foxy? Fox: Nothing still, and don't call me foxy that's just weird. Falco: *Chuckles* Right. *Kept scanning* Krystal: You sure this is the right spot? Slippy: Oh! *Using the mic* DK, diddy, go a bit closer, the fruit gem radar is picking up exactly where you two are. Diddy: Great! DK: *Started digging*
*DK dug up the kiwi fruit gem*
Got the Gem - Small Item Catch - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
DK: I got it! Fox: Good. That's the last one. Even though k rool has the rest. Falco: Okay hang on, this feels a bit too easy. Krystal: Falco's right, I don't like this one bit.
Ambush! / Vs. Star Wolf ver.2 - Metal Gear Ac!d 2 OST (Single Action/Alert Theme)
*Kremling and Gnorc Desert soldiers immediately came out of the ground and started firing at everyone and immediately, link, Koriju, sora, and Roxas attacked fast while everyone dodged the laser fire*
Peppy: It's an ambush! Fox, get out of there now! Wolf: Can't let you do that star fox!
*Star wolf came out of the sky and started firing at the arwings*
Fox: *Does a barrel and flies after wolf* You dirty dog!! Wolf: Did you really think it would be this easy? DK: Diddy! Diddy: Right!
*Both DK and Diddy transformed into super kong form black and started destroying kremling and gnorc soldiers*
Slippy: *Looks down, seeing the fight then looks forward in silence* ......... *Had an idea* Switching to auto-pilot mode! Fox: Auto-pilot? Why?! Slippy: *Turns on the auto-pilot in my arwing then jumps out of the arwing then turns on my green laser blade and ran straight into the fight and started jumping and cutting while spin dodging laser fire* Falco: Slippy! What's he doing?! The Sorceror: Take the frog's legs!
*The desert rhynorc soldiers ran after slippy and started shooting*
Slippy: Oh no you don't! *Ran straight through then jump and strike while deflecting laser fire* Koriju: Go Slippy!! Sora: Man look at him go! Roxas: We should help too. *Ran towards them and attacked* Kaliga: *Jumps down behind and grabs slippy from behind* Enough of this!! Slippy: *Accidently dropped my green laser blade* AGH!! FOX! ANYBODY!! HEEEEEELP!!!! Fox: Slippy! DK, Diddy you have to get slippy! Kaliga has him! Diddy: We're on it! Slippy: *Struggles out of kaliga's strong grip* Let me go! Kaliga: Pretty squirmy for a frog. Not to worry, your death awaits you. Slippy: You better let go of me or else! Kaliga: Or else what? You'll cry to your mommy next? Slippy: Okay you asked for it! *Lift my butt up and lets out a strong poot* HMM!! <POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!> Kaliga: Agh! *Let's go of slippy and hold my mouth and nose* Aggggh!!! Slippy: Hahaha! You got pooted! *Spanks my buttcheek and shakes my butt at kaliga while laughing at him* Kaliga: Filthy frog! I will KILL you!!! Slippy: WAH!! *Ran off* DK HELP!!! SKB DK: *Tackled kaliga down and throws him aside* SKB Diddy: *Jumps in front of slippy* You alright man? Slippy: You saved me! *Hugs diddy* Thank you guys, I thought I was a goner! SKB Diddy: *Laughs* You were awesome Slippy! Now go on back we got this from here. Slippy: You got it! *Grabs my green laser blade back then jumps back on my arwing and flew off* Fox: As much as I appreciate you handling yourself slippy, that was reckless. Slippy: I guess I was caught in the "heat of the moment". Falco: That's not funny slippy, you could have been killed. Slippy: Hehehe. ^^; Yoshi: I thought it was funny. ^^ Guntz: You would think that wouldn't you.
Kaliga's Theme - Vegeta's Theme (Extended) - [Faulconer Productions]
Kaliga: You two really are an absolute nuisance, you know that!? It's no wonder my father couldn't kill both of you! SKB Diddy: Yeah, which is why you're gonna fail like he did. Kaliga: Stay out of this! This is between me and your circus clown of an uncle!!! SKB DK: Circus clown huh? That's a new one. Not. Kaliga: This ends now Donkey Kong!! SKB Diddy: I'm not going anywhere! You're fighting against me and DK! Super Kaliga: Challenge accepted. *Transforms into my super form and ran off* SKB Diddy: Hey! Get back here!
*DK, Diddy, and kaliga started running while fighting in mid-air, even fighting upside down in mid-air, kaliga flipped over, spinning in the air then DK flew further and land on his feet and caught kaliga by punching him straight on his back, uppercutting him up to Diddy as diddy flip kick him on his head to make him drop to the ground*
Spyro: Fighting you both will be a challenge. Bring it on! *Flew down and attacked the sorcerer* The Sorceress: So Spyro, how was it like, killing the stalker girl? Spyro: *Stopped for a moment* I didn't do...wait a minute...so it was you who made her evil!! Ripto: Guilty as charged. And now she won't be wished back thanks to her psychotic ways. Awe well, too bad, so sad. She was collateral damage anyways. Spyro: She was doing just fine till you showed up! She even had a boyfriend of her own! You all twisted her mind to do bad things! Ripto: That we did. And we're quite proud. Dark Spyro: RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWR!!! *Transforms into my dark form* Try being proud of THIS!!! *Fires a dark explosive blast at ripto* Lucario: "Spyro no!!" Crash: *Spun around fast as I turn into super Crash to help Spyro but got blocked by Neo Cortex* Neo Cortex: Going somewhere? Dingodile: *Aims my flamethrower at cortex* Actually yeah, he is. Neo Cortex: Wha...dingodile? What is the meaning of this?! Dingodile: What's the meaning of, you really are stupid you know that!? N. Trophy and N. Brio died to do what that psycho crocodile says about those fruit gems, which probably doesn't mean make sense! And you act as if you don't even care! Neo Cortex: ....No, I...don't care. You and everyone else are expendable to me. Dingodile: Exactly. Neo Cortex: Is there a point to all this? Dingodile: Tiny, hold him down. Tiny Tiger: *Grabs behind neocortex and holds his arms* Neo Cortex: Tiny!? You too!! Tiny: Tiny no longer like cortex! Take us on suicide missions for us to die for lousy gems, tiny no like that at all! Dingodile: Now then. Crash: *Saw dingodile punching neocortex as open and close my eyes from the pain I witnessed* Neo Cortex: Ooo! Oh! Ow! Ouch! Agh! Ugh! Dingodile: One more perhaps? Aku Aku: At least. Dingodile: *Punched cortex straight in the face* Neo Cortex: Oof! *Fell to the ground then turned over* W-Wait! Let's talk about this! Dingodile: Talk about what?! How we're supposed to die from a stupid cause that let brio and trophy die too?! Neo Cortex: This is outrageous! You can't do this to me! I created you! Dingodile: Well you know what? I disown you as my creator. So let's bring out the butter, 'cause I'm about to make toast outta ya! *Fires my flamethrower at cortex* Neo Cortex: *Started screaming like a girl as I ran around on fire* Aku Aku: Dingodile, why would you do this? Dingodile: This whole mission has been insanity, and cortex allowed it all to happen. Even letting Klump and krusha die when they have a kid on the way. Aku Aku: A kid?! Dingodile: *Pulls out a kremling egg and shows it to them* Before they were killed, I kept this little girl...or guy safe and it took me a lot to convince tiny to come with me. But eventually, he came around. Tiny: Tiny wants to see crunch again, tiny missed him... Aku Aku: So you're coming with us to n sanity island? Dingodile: Yeah, I could use a vacation from all this, in fact, I'm gonna retire as a villain and open my own restaurant. Tiny can assist me. I'll see you guys back at the great fox. Good on ya crash mate! *Ran off* Aku Aku: Crash we have to help Spyro! Super Crash: On it! *Flew after him* Ripto: Look at you! Such a beauty in dark! Join us Spyro. You truly won't regret it. Lucario: *Blasted The Sorcerer and Ripto wand out thier hands then used mind calm on Spyro* Super Crash: *Went in front of Spyro* Whoa there, you don't wanna use that darkness. Dark Spyro: Why! All they ever do is....is....mess with....*yawns and fell asleep* Super Crash: ...Lucario I think you used too much. Lucario: *Caught Spyro* "Didn't I? He will be alright once he wakes."
>>>>>
Kaliga: *Fell onto the floor, covered in blood and groans* SKB DK: Dude, you really need to step up your game, the stronger we get, the harder it will be to defeat us both. SKB Diddy: Yeah so why don't just give up? Kaliga: *Started laughing* SKB DK: ...How is that funny?
The Future King Strikes Back - Intro - Star Fox Music Extended
Kaliga: You two really think you've won but that was just the appetizer. *Snap my finger*
*Thousands of Kremling Armada Ships came out of hyperjump as fighter ships came out along with cyborg kritters flying in the air*
Kaliga: Here's the main course!! *Evil laughs* SKB DK: Uh oh, this is definitely not good... Kaliga: What's the matter? Don't have the stomach for it!?! HEHEHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Fox: Do you guys see that?! Falco: That psychopath just brought in a whole armada! Peppy: Prepare for the worst everyone, this'll be a long battle! Uka Uka: You imbecile! How can you let a bunch of minions pick you off?! Neo Cortex: I never expected them to fight against me! How was I supposed to know?! Uka Uka: Such a BIG head! Such a TINY brain! I should deliver you to those heroes right now! Neo Cortex: But they'll kill me! Uka Uka: That's a risk I'M willing to take! Natsumaru: Enough you two. Head back to the ship. Kaliga's got this under control. Neo Cortex: I do hope k rool has another plan if this fails. Uka Uka: One can only hope.

Kaliga: Welcome to MY finest hour. SKB Diddy: K Rool would never use an entire armada as big as that. How are we supposed to defeat them all?! SKB DK: ....Well, when I touched crash and slippy they both had the super form but were only limited. If I touch everyone else then it'll be the same thing. So we'll have to take'em all out in the air. Roxas: We got your back! Sora: Yea, we're pretty much experts with this! Kaliga: Although I enjoyed our fight, it is time I left. You can either accept death with dignity or regret! It's entirely up to you! *Teleport away* Super DK: *Switches to super mode* Everyone, put your hands on me and diddy's back, we'll give you all super forms. Super Diddy: *Switched to super form* Or just grab our hands, that works too.
*Everyone walked over and touched DK*
Dillon: ?! Russ: Dude this feels awesome! Sora: It's giving me Super Smash feels.
*A bright light shines all across the planet as it gave everyone a limited timed super form*
Super Link: Amazing. I've never felt such power before. Super Yoshi: I have! *Flaps my angel wings* Super Lucario: "Remember, this is only limited, so use it wisely." Super Koriju: Everyone, accelerate to attack formation and go forward!
*All the Kybernetic kremling soldiers flew towards the heroes with a battle cry while everyone else flew straight into the air and started fighting the Kyber kremling armies, it became absolute chaos. The star fox team flew in to help as well when star wolf backed off*
K Rool: O_O *watching the whole battle outside* How...how did you do all this?! Kaliga: It was a side hobby during my training and I was able to make upgrades to my kremling army. K Rool: This is absolutely beautiful! By the time they're done they'll be too tired to fight! Kaliga: Death to all who stand in our way!!!
*K Rool and Kaliga laughed in sync*
Super Dillon: *Spinning into a spiked ball and started flying while rolling through Kybernetic kremling soldiers* Fox: There's too many of them! Slippy We gotta go after the armada ships! It's where the Kyber kremlings are being stored! Falco: They'll be nothing but scrap metal! Slippy: Going into ninja mode! Only way to take them out is swift and unseen! Falco: Yeah but can THEY go invisible?! Slippy: Oh right... Super Diddy: They're just trying to tire us out! We gotta finish this quick before that happens! Super DK: Guess you know what to do next. Super Diddy: I do! Kamehameeeee- Falco: Wrong move, dumbass! Super Diddy: Oh! Sorry! Banana powerrrrrr CANNON!!!! *Fires a huge yellow beam of energy out of my hands and destroys at least ten to twenty kremling armada ships and stops then saw more cyborg kremlings come out* ....Well, that was my plan where's yours? Super DK: ^^; Kaliga: *Evil laughs as I watch* Super DK: Oh! Tag team banana power! Super Diddy: Yes but we gotta make it big enough to actually destroy all of the armada, not just some of it but ALL of it, but we also gotta be careful, star fox and the others are inside one of the armada ships to destroy them from the inside.
*Four kremling armada ships exploded while falling down from the sky*
Super Diddy: See? Super DK: *Thinks for a moment then had an idea* Super Kong Black form banana cannon! Super Diddy: What?! But we don't even know if it's going to work! Super DK: Well we can't use Super Kong Form Red, plus you don't have yours yet. Super Diddy: *Sighs* ...Honestly, anything is better than nothing. We have to move further away and generate a blast so huge that it'll destroy the entire armada. And we gotta hurry before everyone else gets tired. Super DK: Then let's do it.
*Both Diddy and DK flew up into the air and transformed into their SKB form*
Andrew: Just look at those sissies! Leon: Yeah! Running like little chickens! Panther: Hmmm... Wolf: What's up panther? Panther: ...Nothing, just speculating. Fox: What are they up to? Slippy: I dunno. I can't see them, they're too far away.
*Diddy and DK focused their energy through their hands aiming towards all the armada ships and created big dark powerful blast that wiped out every single one in their path*
SKB DK and Diddy: SHADOW AURA BLAST!!!!!
*Instead of a banana power cannon, the shadow aura blast is twice as strong and much more lethal than a gigantic blast, everyone got out of the way as the devastating wave destroyed all of the kremling armada ships in one single blast as there were nothing but explosions everywhere until it stopped as the shadow aura blast vanished*
SKB DK and Diddy: *Panting as they still have their hands out* Falco: That was AWESOME. Slippy: WHOO!! I can't believe it, we actually won! Super Lucario: "That kind of power is so much more destructive, it could have destroyed the entire planet within minutes." K Rool: WHAT?! But how!? Kaliga: Hm. K Rool: And you're calm about this, why?! Kaliga: Because I have a new plan. SKB Diddy: *Breaths heavy as smoke came out my body* We did it... it actually worked!! *Hoots and beat my chest* SKB DK: *Hoots and beat my chest*
*Everyone else flew down as their super forms timed out*
Link: They maanged to take down all of the armada ships. Falco: Not even andross can pull off something like that. Krystal: Is everyone okay? Yoshi: Yeah, we're all okay now! ^_^ Fox: Okay everyone return to the ship. I got a feeling they've backed down for now.
*Everyone went back to the great fox then from out of nowhere kaliga flew towards DK and punched him in the face as he flew towards a huge rock and smashed through and fell down to the floor*
SKB Diddy: HEY!! Kaliga: *Kicked diddy in the face*
*Diddy flew down to the floor and crashed into the sand*
Slippy: Hey! That's not fair! Kaliga: *Evil laughs* Foolish kongs! Now that both of you are exhausted, now I can take my time tearing both your heads off! DK: *Got up slowly then noticed my chi is empty along with reverting back to normal* Uh oh! Diddy: *Noticed I'm being grabbed by my tail* Let me go, let me go! Kaliga: *Started punching diddy's chest senselessly while I still hold him by his tail* DK: HEY! Krystal: Fox do something! Spyro: *Flew down and shot down ice blast towards Kaliga* Koriju: *Shot out ice blast at Kaliga* Diddy: *Shivering as I'm curled up in a ball* DK: *Grabs diddy while he's in his ball form* It's okay diddy you can come out now. Diddy: *Comes out of my ball when I noticed DK's holding me* Thanks DK. DK: Don't thank me, thank them. Spyro and Koriju: *Waved to diddy* Diddy: *Hoots* ^_^ Super Kaliga: *Started cracking and breaks out of the ice* RAAAAWR!!! THAT'S IT! THAT'S IIIIIIIIT!!!!!! *Flew straight into the air* Peppy: Well now where's he going? Fox: I'm not sure but it doesn't look good. ROB64: Confirmed. He is heading to outer space. Peppy: Outer space? For what? Super Kaliga: I've had just about enough of these insects! It's time I destroy this planet! *Stopped flying as I look at planet titania* You're hope ends here!! *Holds my hand up as I opened it* And your meaningless existence with it!!!
*An energy ball forms out of kaliga's hand and grew even bigger and bigger until it reaches the planet's length*
Super Kaliga: The Shatterbomb is now finished. Now I like to see you all try and get away from this! GO TO HELL!!!!! *Throws the shatter bomb*
*The shatter bomb flew down to planet titania as everyone quickly saw a glowing light heading down to the planet*
K Rool: *Shrieks when I saw the shatter bomb slowly hurling down* Neo Cortex: Is he insane?! He's gonna destroy all of us! K Rool: Quick! We have to get out of here now! Krystal: FOX!! LOOK!! Fox: Holy hell!! Peppy: Goodness gracious great balls of fire! Roxas: Okay it's obvious we gotta stop that ball from reaching this planet or we're all done for! Klonoa: But what can we do?! DK and Diddy ran out of chi and don't have enough to destroy it! Diddy: DK.. DK: *Looks around as I think then to Lucario* Idea! *Ran over to Lucario* Diddy: But.. DK: I have a little bit chi left. With lucario Aura blast, Koriju ice power and my banana blast it should create a big explosion into that fire ball! Koriju: It shall be done! Lucario: "Very well, let us proceed."
*All three of them walked up to where they can see the shatterbomb, the planet begins to shake and crack slowly from the shatterbombs impact*
Koriju: *Took a deep breath as fired and ice beam out of my mouth* RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWR!!!!!!! DK: BANANA POWER CANNON!!! *Thrust my hands forward and shot a yellow beam out of my hands* Lucario: AURA STORRRRRRRM!!!! *Charged my aura energy and thrust my hands and fired blue energy out of my hands*
*The three beams started to connect as they flew straight into the air and hit the shatterbomb to prevent it from hitting the ground, the shatterbomb moved back a little as the three of them put more power into their energy*
Slippy: Come on...just a little more. Diddy: Come on DK..
*The blast got stronger and pushed the shatterbomb further back*
Eyecatch B/Now back to Donkey Kong Z - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Soundtrack - World Clear

*The blast got stronger and pushed the shatterbomb further back*
Krystal: It's working!
*The shatterbomb exploded, sending a windy shockwave all across the planet, everyone cheered for their victory*
Super Kaliga: *Noticed the shadow alliance warship flew into space* You won this round donkey kong, but mark my words, once the final battle comes, our fate will determine the universe and I will be the one to survive! *Flew off*
*Everyone went back inside the great fox as it flew out of planet titania*
Too Close for comfort - Crossing those Hills - Final Fantasy IX Extended Version Musik 1h
Krystal: DK that was truly amazing! Fox: Thanks to all of us, planet titania is safe. DK: You did awesome little man. *Ruffles slippy's head* Koriju: Hai, I am most proud of your valiant courage and your swordsmanship slippy-san. Slippy: Awe guys stop\^-^/ Krystal: I say this victory deserves a feast. DK: I agree. Diddy: So who's egg is that anyways? Dingodile: Klump and krusha, the two were supposed to raise a child together after the battle was over but...kaliga killed them when k rool had no further use for them. Diddy: Oh no...the kremling baby is parentless now... Krystal: I can sense the child's growth, she'll soon be ready to hatch. DK: How do you know it's a girl? Krystal: Sometimes, a girl just knows. Peppy: But without Klump and krusha, who's gonna raise it? DK: Not me. Diddy: DK... DK: Diddy, the kid can't stay with us, it belongs with their two fathers. We have to wish for Klump and krusha back, they didn't deserve to die at kaliga's hands. They need to be with their child. Fox: In that case, here. *Gives DK the crystal coconut* DK: *Hold the crystal coconut* I wish for Klump and krusha to be brought back to life.
*The crystal coconut started to glow brightly as two orbs flew out of it and fell on the floor and magically exploded and brought Klump and krusha out.
Klump: Krusha! Krusha: ...Klump? Klump and Krusha: We're alive! *Gave each other a hug and made out with their lips* Krusha: I missed you, Klump! Klump: I missed you too krusha! *Let's go of krusha* Wait...where are we? *Turned around and noticed the heroes staring at us* AH! Please don't hurt us! *Flinched and covered my face while my body shaking* DK: We're not here to hurt you. Klump: Wait...you used the crystal coconut to wish us back? DK: Yep. Klump: After all that we did to you and the other kongs...why? Diddy: So we can give you this. *Holds up the kremling egg* Klump: Kalli! Krusha: *Grabs the egg and hugs it* Our baby!! *Kissed the egg* Mwah, mwah, mwah, mwah! ^w^ Klump: Now that we have our egg back, we can be a family.
*The egg begins to crack*
Krusha: *Gasp* Klump, it's hatching! Kalli: *Popped out of the egg shells while rubbing my eyes and looking up to krusha and Klump* Klump: Do you know who we are? Kalli, it's us. Kalli: Dada. ^_^ *Hugs krusha* All: Awwwww. Krusha: She called me dada! I'm a daddy! *Cries* Klump: Thank you so much DK, I'll never forget this. Isn't that right, little one? *Tickles Kalli's chin* Kalli: *Laughing while cooing* ^^ DK: Sora, I want you to open a portal and send Klump and krusha to K Lumsy's island, he'll keep them safe. And also tiny tiger and dingodille back to n sanity island. Sora: On it! Roxas: I'll do n sanity island.
*Both sora and Roxas took their blades out and aimed it behind everyone that created the world's for them*
Tiny: What will tiny do? Dingodille: You'll help me in the kitchen of course. Klump: *Holds kalli in my arms* Let's get going. Kalli: Bye-bye. *Waves everyone*
*Klump and krusha went to k lumsy's island*
Dingodile: Alrighty then crash, see ya around like a rissole! *Laughs*
*Tiny and Dingodile went to n sanity island as both of the portals vanished*
DK: Okay NOW we can start our feast.
*Soon after the ship landed on another planet for everyone to come out to get some food to eat*
Krystal: Where is this place? Fox: Planet aurora. Diddy: The atmosphere feels relaxing and peaceful. Fox: I need a moment with crystal. Head for the city to the food plaza, you'll find a variety of stuff there. Diddy: Thanks fox. Hey DK Fox said that-
*DK zooms off where he can smell food*
Diddy: Aaaaand there he goes... Falco: Quick! We gotta stop him! He's gonna hog all the food! Lucario: "WHAT!? NO!!"
*Everyone ran after DK into the city*
Krystal: A moment with me? Alone? *giggles* What is the occasion? Fox: You'll see.
*Fox holds Krystal's hand as he walked up the grassy hill to see the twin moons in the sky as well as the beautiful scenery*
Krystal x Fox - Shenmue Music: Nozomi (Game Ver.)
Krystal: Oh fox, it's so beautiful. Fox: I know.
*Both fox and Krystal stare at the twin moons for a moment they gazed into each other and started making out for a minute or two then fox fell on his back on the soft grass while Krystal lands on top of fox as they both laughed*
Krystal: If we ever decide to be parents, I know what to name our child. Fox: What? Krystal: Marcus. Fox: And if it's a girl? Krystal: Aurora, like this lovely planet. Fox: I love it. Krystal: *Cuddles onto fox* Let's stay like this, just a moment longer. *kissed fox's face* Fox: Definitely. *Hugs Krystal close and looks up at the moon*
>>>>
DK: *Stopped and look around* So many good foods!^^ Diddy: As long as you're sharing all that with the others. DK: Hehe I will^^ Falco: *Stopped running as I pant heavily* Damn he runs fast for a heavy weight! Slippy: WAH!! *Tripped over and fell flat on my face* Ohhh... Sora: This place is amazing! And the aroma is delightful. Roxas: Wonder if they have any veggie burgers... Peppy: They do. *Help Slippy up* Just try not to devour the foods... *Noticed DK is gone* We seriously need to get a leash for DK. Lucario: "Do not worry I planned for something like this, I used an aura tether, so if he's far away from us, he'll simply teleport right back here." Diddy: A what?
*DK teleported back to where everyone was*
DK: What just happened? Lucario: "See?" Peppy: DK we get that you're hungry but you have GOT to stay with us as a group, you could get lost on big planets like this. DK: Oh fine! *Fold my arms* Diddy: So where to? Lucario: "We're at the food plaza, we can pick up food while we walk and eat." Daisuke: *Barks* ^^ Koriju: *Pat Daisuke's head* I would suggest Japanese food, there is so much you need to try. They are to die for. Falco: Well what are we standing around here for? Let's get going already. Russ: I couldn't agree more.
*Everyone headed to the first side shop*
Sora: So many strange foods.. Russ: Agree. Falco: *Just bought a veggie wrap* Strange but delicious ^^ DK: *Just eat everything I see, like a wild animal* Koriju: *Took the usual sushi and Japanese ramen as I eat with my chopsticks* Dillon: *Look around* Banjo: Hey mate they have large fried turkey leg! Klonoa: They do?! I gotta try some! *Ran off* Guntz: *Eats Mexican food* Yoshi: *Used my tongue to grab food and swallow them* Mmmmm. ^^
*Everyone was enjoying their meals together. Fox and Krystal soon met up with them*
Fox: I can never understand how you're so patient with donkey kong. Krystal: As long as you let him be who he is you'll have no problem with him. DK: *Ate fresh banana pudding happily* Fox: Is it going to be like this when we have kids? Krystal: ...Somewhat but no. DK's....different. But that's just what makes him special, and although falco doesn't get it since he's brash, I'm sure he understands that too. Fox: Really? I find that hard to believe. Krystal: Falco has opened up more to DK. Aside from his odor he doesn't care much of anything else. Fox: Hmm... Peppy: Well there you two are. Where'd you guys been? Fox: Needed time to ourselves. It's been a long journey for all of us. Klonoa: It sure has! *Enjoys my large turkey leg* Man this is delicious! Roxas: And the veggie burger's not bad either. Spyro: *Eats BBQ chicken wings with hot sauce on them including on my fries* Slippy: Hey fox, you gotta try some of these! I literally can't stop eating! ^_^ Fox: Sure. *Walked over and took some of what Slippy is eating* What is it? Slippy: Fried locust. It's seasoned salt powder makes it SO addicting. Fox: Is it? *Took a bite into it and chews* Hmm... Slippy: Well? Fox: ....It's delicious! *Eats two more* Krystal: *Giggles* I guess now fox is addicted to them. Slippy: I knew he'd like it. Falco: No you didn't. Slippy: Yuh huh! DK: <BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRP!!!!!!!!!!!> *On the ground with a full belly* Ohhhhhhhhh....now I can't move. ^^ Falco: You better have. We're not dragging your heavy butt back to the ship. DK: Nah I'm just kidding. Falco: Course you are. -_- DK: I'll be up in a minute, I just need to relax. ^_^ *Rubs my belly*
*After everyone had their relaxing time, some of them were talking but others still look around waiting*
DK: *Walks back over to everyone* Okay guys I'm ready. Fox: Good, now we can get back to the ship.
*Everyone walked back to the great fox when all of a sudden...*
DK: *Simply let out a fart but a chi energy orb came out of me instead* <PHOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!> O_O
*The chi energy ball flew up in the air and exploded*
Everyone: O_o Diddy: Did chi energy just shoot out of your butt!?! DK: I uh.. don't know ^^; Lucario: "Interesting.." Spyro: WELL that's definitely something you don't see every day. Crash: *Nods fast* Lucario: "DK, do it again" Falco: Say what?! Krystal: Lucario? Lucario: "Just trust me. But, aim at that tree over there." *Points to the tree* DK: Oh, okay. *Turned myself around, looking forward while my butt is aiming at the tree. Suddenly my stomach growls again then shoots out another chi energy orb out of my butt* <PHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!>
*The chi energy orb destroyed the tree as it exploded into flames*
Everyone: WHOA!! Koriju: Now that was awesome. Banjo: Sure was! Diddy: Well...guess that means chi energy is improving...in some form or another. DK: This is so cool! I can fart out an actual cannonball! I know just want to call it. Â "Banana Power Poot!" ^_^
*Everyone automatically faceplants to the floor while their legs and feet are twitching*
*Now back at the great fox*
Things are quiet in the great fox - Space Junk Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy Music Extended
DK: *Watching outer space* Fox: *Scans the area* Hm.. Krystal: Something wrong? Fox: That's the thing. Nothing is wrong. There's no enemies within miles from here. Diddy: Good. Then that means we can think of a plan to end this once and for all. Me and Diddy will use the fruit gems to track the rest of them, which is with k rool and kaliga. The rest of you guys will deal with the other villains. This is something that me and DK need to handle. Fox: Very well. Krystal: *Pick up Diddy* You've came a long way Diddy and faced your fears. We're very proud of you. Diddy: Awe, thanks, you guys. ^_^ Krystal: That deserves a reward, so I'm going to give you a kiss. *Kissed diddy's cheek* Mwah. <3 Diddy: *Blushes from the kiss* T-thank you^~^ Krystal: *Puts diddy down* Falco: Well, guess the final battle's tomorrow. We all know what to do from here on out. Slippy: Best of luck to you guys. Spyro: Same with you. Crash: *Speaking gibberish as I cock my Wumpa fruit bazooka* Aku Aku: Crash agrees of course.
This time this means war / End of Act 2 - Resident Evil 3: Nemesis OST - Traitor
K Rool: This is amazing, you build an entire Kybernetic kremling army yourself. Kaliga: Some of the kremlings helped but yes, most of it was all me. Neo Cortex: Right, so we need a plan to actually rid of the heroes. Uka Uka: I suppose that you have one? K Rool: Yes I do. I will be sending andross and gnasty gnorc to planet zoness and give those gnorc armies several ships. Kaliga: But it'll have to be built by the Kyber kremlings. They can work faster and more effectively. Next neo cortex, ripto and the sorceress will be dropped off into planet fortuna along with natsumaru. Me and father will deal with DK and Diddy on planet katina. I suspect they'll be coming for the rest of the fruit gems and when they do. I have a little surprise for them. K Rool: They won't get the rest of the fruit gems as long as there is still fight left in us. Ripto: As long as I can get rid of spyro then fine by me. The Sorceress: Well I certainly won't let you have all the fun. Ripto: Wouldn't think nothing of it. K Rool: Good, then we can proceed with the plan.

We can each be seen as a narrate â memories construct who we are â broaden notion of text
¡ Plato talks about stories and folk tradition that holds culture meaning â narrative from visual image â everyone has a different narrative of the painting before us â competing narratives within image â narrative within colour, texture
¡ Story of a story
¡ Title guides you to a narrative with the imagery reinforcing that but also telling more stories
¡ Your level of semiotic understanding limits your understanding of the image
¡ Narrative changes with the age that is looking at it - each generation is reclaiming words to subvert their original meaning.
¡ What is the first story you remember being told?
âA need to tell and hear stories is essential to the species Homo-sapiens â second in necessity apparently after nourishment and before love and shelter. Millions survive without love or home almost none in silence; the opposite of silence leads quickly to narrative, and the sound of story is the dominant sound of our lives, from the small accounts of our dayâs events to the vast incommunicable construct of psychopathsâ â Edward Reynolds Price â when nothing material remains we still have cultural stories and identities built by these stories.
¡ Thereâs a large pool of stories we like to retell such as Romeo and Juliet â this links that no idea is original â universal metaphors â passing messages down through the metaphors â themes such as love, hate and conflict
¡ Each version applies to the new generation of the time â not just about culture
¡ Narrative is a document of it times
¡Retold is different ways reachâs different audiences â becomes relevant to the year, the generation and whatâs happening around us in the world
¡ Same old story â The taming of the Shrew vs 10 things I hate about you â same stereotypes apply in both stories Â
¡Disney Princess reflective of the times â change in female character in current years â reflects cultural narratives
Cultural stories â help a community structure and assign meaning to history and their existences â include creation stories â community origins and fables which help teach moral values and ethical behaviour. Can help a community reinforce social norms and strengthen identity.
¡ âEnd of the Worldâ â types of stories we engage in â disaster films â global north â good vs bad â plays on climate change and the fear the goes along with â biblical repetition
Cultural stories â old folk tale â Juha and his donkey appear in many forms â adapted from an older oral tradition â inspired other stories â central to Arabic story telling culture â gulf region â donkeys still in pop culture
Whatâs the difference between âstoryâ and ânarrativeâ = story is a sequence of events (plot) â Narrative is the way those events are put together to be presented to an audience. â politics and moral value
¡ Royal Family â all the same story â narrative different in different sources such as newspapers â depends on the newspaperâs values
âNarrative Theory starts from the assumption that narrative is a basic human strategy for coming to terms with fundamental elementâs of our experienceâ â how ânarrative is different from other types of discourseâ- âhow stories help people make sense of the world, whilst also studying how people make sense of storiesâ
Matt Madden, 99 ways to tell a story â narrative changes in each comic â told in several imagesâ vs told in a one frame â same events, same story but a new narrative due to the construction of the story e.g. the way the story was put together not just the story itself.
Meaning in the colour â different representation
Narrative hard to pin down within work â so bland and boring â directly relatable â mundane experiences â plays with language within narrative making it obscure Â
¡ Narrative of the image Dorothea Lange â âThe Migrant Motherâ â elements missed within the frame such as the women having more children, she has also been posed â the narrative was created by Lange but it is not really telling the truth of this woman â created as an image for the great depression
The picture of revellers in Manchester â viral sensation due to it resembling a painting
¡ The Fibonacci sequence â Renaissance artists would use the ratio with the visual ad of the Fibonacci spiral which is created by drawing circular arcs connecting the opposite corners of squares in the golden rectangle.
¡ Narrative in digital age â due to screens narrative cannot be read like looking at a person and hearing their voice â how is a tone created in social media â can be done visually but also done with text and emojis
¡ Accidental storytelling â the tone of a narrative can be lost â digital debate is often tone deaf
¡ Narrating debate â done by âupper class gentlemanâ â juxtapositions
¡ Narratives in different forms â in our society there our multiple belief patterns and different types of narratives which are for the majority suppressed. The dominant classes have created the norm, a standard that is passed off as natural. This standard is reinforced by institutions such as schools and the church. Subjugated narratives have been continually produced as a response to dominant ideology. â form of protest
¡ Outsider art - something thatâs not conventional
¡ Art Therapy is a form of outsider art â didnât attend art uni â is it really outside art?
¡ âThe Palestinian Trail of Fish: Artistâs Graffiti dives into heart of refugee struggleâ â response to the bad that is happening around the artists â controversial to make â not following the norm that has been created â comment of immigrants being fish out of water
¡ âMy tattoos, or, rather, my single narrative tattoo, essentially charts the Eastward migration of Buddhism from its Hindu sources in India through its multiple manifestations / incarnations / influences in Tibet, Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, China, and, finally Japan. Not unlike Shakespeareâs Parolles, from the ironically (at least from Parollesâ point of view) titled Allâs Well that Ends Well, before I put my once-discrete tattoos into dialogue, into the development of classical narrative arcing, I was a âman of shreds and patches.â A tattoo here, a tattoo there. I found my nine scattered tattoos aesthetically unsightly. So over an 18-year period I worked (with the help of tattooists from Canada, Thailand, Colombia, India, Israel, Vietnam, and Hong Kong) on establishing an interconnected narrative. A story. But a postmodern story: one that includes, among other things, fragmentation, flashback, back story, interruption, and openendedness. Thereâs no single reading of my story of Buddhist passage.â â Jason S Polley
Prison tattoos â narrative of their lifeâs being told â symbols â more semiotics than narrative? â all tattoos follow a narrative â all part of what has made you up â your life narratives â an example of subjugated narratives
¡ Everything read as a text â shapes career and outlook
¡ Graffiti a example of a subjugated narrative â narratives found on built environment - subversive power
¡ The storyteller Walter Benjamin â
¡ The nesting place of the storyteller, Walter Benjamin pointed out, are in the loom shed and at the spinning wheel, in the fulling barn and the kitchen when doing tedious tasks - shelling peas in readiness for storing, sorting pulses for bagging, bottling and preserving. Stories were told to alleviate harsh labour and endless drudgery - and they were passed between generations - by the voice of experience, filled with the laughter of defiance, and the hope of just deserts.
¡   Creating narrative: exploring how makers and designers are using objects and making to tell stories â never used for food and drink but used for narrative
¡   Narrative fashion â everyone tells stories â fashion designers and brands use narratives to become a storyteller â the expert of storytelling and apparel comes aliveâ â the blouse has been passed down from generation to generation â narrative presents itself in clothing
¡   Creating narrative: exploring how makers and designers are using objects and making to tell stories â never used for food and drink but used for narrative
¡   Capturing a type of narrative through the aesthetic of craft by semiotics â narratives implied by signs
Set Task:
For this set task I choose to look at staged narrative. This idea came from everyones opinion of the migrant mother photography in the lecture. When asked what they thought they saw her as the mother of America, hard working, etc but no one even the lecturer mentioned that to achieve this photograph many were taken and the end product was staged by the photographer. Alongside the migrant mother I chose to look at the boy with grenade too which follows the same concept.
Dorothea Lange - Migrant Mother
The women is just a subject, âan appropriate symbolâ created by Lange
The symbol of the mother is created by the lack of the father figure, two small children holding onto her, the mothers gazing off past the camera - conjures emotions such as empathy but also admiring the mother at the time would of been a symbol of hope
Photograph taken for the FSA a government run project
One of the most reproduced images in history
Lange took a number of photographs of the mother and her family
There's a missing thumb - Lange had a retoucher remove the womens thumbÂ
Constructed narrative - how authentic is the story/narrative in the image
Raises the question what stories are true and what are not?
Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park - Diane Arbus
Seminar:
Part one
The colour of pomegranates - is a less literal sense - reveals poets life visually and poetically - little dialogueÂ
Art that tells a story, art that is inspired by a story, art that is composed by existing stories, art that invents a whole new story opposed to a narrativeÂ
Artists who explore stories
Susan Hiller, Monument - 41 photographs of memorial plaques, reenactment of how the work is seen - headphones on bench, voice plays through them
Mark Dion, Tate Thames Dig, 1999 - combined banks of the thames - collected hundreds of fragments of history and tokens of life - objects create inner monologue - explores timeÂ
Doris Salcedo - Unland -The orphans tunic 1997 - address seems of loss and bereavement - period of three years spoke to children who had witnessed the murder of their parents, how individuals experiences can be conveyed by others - physical distortion that happens within work - distortion of life that happens when you lose someone
Part two - Anti-NarrativeÂ
Desperate need to make stories to make meaning from life - what do we do with anti narrative - when every-things been flipped on its head
Paul Auster - a novel without a lot of detail where the man is - what questions begin to formulate from it? Leaves room for interpretationÂ
Exercise in frustration - full of paradox due to its ambiguityÂ
Without truth are we lost?
Definition - AntiNarrative - methods that challenge the traditional concepts of storytelling - breaks conventions and creates more question than it provides answers
Storytelling and order - need narrative structure for world to make sense
Postmodernism tolerant of ambiguity, style free work, playful work without doubt, allowed to ask a question without knowing the answers - Lyotard, The Postmodern ConditionÂ
Contemporary methods of experimentation - blending of boundaries, practitioners rather question that get a clear cut answer
A conversation with the viewerÂ
Subverting todorov - subverting the straight forward narrative structure of equilibrium, disruption and disequilibrium , an attempt to fix it, the new equilibrium

Part Four
Planning an Essay
Arrive at an academic opinion
StructureÂ
Introduction( what, why and how?) - what: explain the question, key issues and ideas - Why: why is it important, think of broader context , how does it relate personally - How: how are you going to go about answering the question?
Main Body - setting out evidence , critical framework, two or three key texts, underpinning essay, summarise, analyse and evaluate - could also be comparing two different artists
Conclusion - should set out academic conclusions based on evidence supplied in essay, no new evidence, readdress the questions and explain clearly how they have been addressed and answer within the essay, refer back to introduction and main body of writing

E3 2017 predictions
E3 predictions
In general these come from my thoughts, but also include ideas Iâve heard floated around the web which I completely agree with. Avoiding the already announced/leaked stuff, since thatâs not fun!
Iâve sort predictions for all main presentations into 3 different categories based on likelihood (âLock it in, Reggieâ (very confident), â50/50â and âswinging for the fencesâ (super unlikely but I gotta go all in)). Also, because Iâm Connell, this skews Nintendo, but I do have thoughts on everyone! And almost entirely positive ones!
These are in order of the presentation times, hence Nintendo being last. Oh, and a shadow drop is an unannounced game or feature being available for download immediately.
General Predictions/Trends:
-Â One final push for remastered collections.
- The PC gaming show will be a shit-show again.
- After âSeven Nation Armyâ did so well for the Battlefield 1 trailer, at LEAST 3 other trailers will use a contemporary song for a game set in another time.
EA:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Need for Speed will have a Cops vs Racers mode. Because it is always the best thing. Shutting down fools for daring to turn MY roads into a race track is always the best.
- FIFA presentation will not mention the Switch version at all. Info will only be turned up at the show floor, with 2-3 units available. There will be a very simple token minigame so they can justify it as being âbuilt for switchâ, but it is 99% the PS3/360 version.
50/50:
- Mass Effect 1-3 Remastered collection, for PS4 and Xbox one. Designed to win back trust from gamers who were burned hard by Andromeda, which really damaged the brand. This leads to my further prediction (not for this though) that ME5 then connects both stories together, where the Andromeda crew find a device that allows them to send a message with information back in time to Shephards brain and bam, youâre playing with the characterâs people liked again.
- Sim City. Itâs been long enough since the last Sim City, which was disastrous. Time for EA to show they learned from their mistakes and can take on city: skylines
 Singing for the fences:
- Mass Effect Trilogy also for the Switch. Despite the only support being a terrible FIFA game thus far, the actual sales of the system will be seen as an opportunity⌠to sell old games again with very little extra work. Perhaps some token amiibo functionality in the character creator.
Microsoft:
Obviously, this will be all about Scorpio. Every game will make a point to include something about how the Scorpio version is enhanced. Also apologies, donât really have much
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Forza 5.
- Scorpio will have VR featured heavily
 50/50:
- Scorpioâs final name will be: Xbox Scorpio. Microsoft is done with numbers.
 50/50:
- It will be revealed that Scorpio, unlike PS4Pro, will have games exclusive to it.
 Swinging for the fences:
- Crackdown demo shadow drop
- Exclusive John Wick videogame for scorpio
- BATTLETOADS
Bethesda:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Wolfenstein Titan(?) official reveal.
- Prey DLC chapters.
 50/50:
- Switch Skyrim has Zelda content in it. Because why else would someone pay $60 US for this game for a third time?
- Elder Scrolls VI revealed. Will feature at least 2 of the regions. Possibly Elsweyr and Valenwood
 Swinging for the fences:
- Elder Scrolls finally bring back the Dwemer, either by reviving them or setting it in the distant past.
Ubisoft:
So⌠most of this conference is already leaked, but stillâŚ. Uh⌠hm. Well hereâs a few somethings.
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Rabbids/Mario will have a CG teaser. Gameplay saved for Nintendo.
 50/50:
- On stage reveal for Farcry will include not only making fun of the people who got so angry that the villians are a white Christian cult, but there will be an embarrassing on-stage play where people pretend to be storming the stage to protest the treatment of horrible people.
 Swinging for the fences:
- A switch exclusive Assassinâs Creed side-story, much like they did for Vita around Assassinâs Creed 3.
- Rabbids/Mario features a cover of âAll Starâ, covered by Rabbids themselves, because this game will be drowning in memes. And I will hate this while secretly loving this.
Sony:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Sony saves IO interactive, Hitman 2 will be PS4 exclusive. Microsoft SHOULD do this, but⌠this feels more like a Sony move.
- MASSIVE Spiderman blowout, including a lot of show floor stuff. Playable demo. No tie in to the movie, but instead a new story with Goblin and the sinister 6 as the villians. And thereâll be some shitty day 1 pre-order crap, probably involving a Black Cat side story. F4 will cameo, but play no major roles â however Insomniac will be building a shared games universe. Yes, even with the Squaresoft stuff.
- Bloodborne 2. It will happen.
50/50:
- A real, honest to god Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer, with worlds revealed, including Moana and Frozen.
- Shenmue 1+2 Remastered announced. With Shenmue 3 delayed (and that having been inevitable for some time), this would be a smart move to capitalise on the clear demand for more Ryo.
- Another Last of Us Part 2 teaser, but no gameplay yet.
- English Dragon Quest XI release date, mid 2018.
- Red Dead 2 trailer, first with actual gameplay. I also think this will reveal that Zelda-like free climbing is being implemented.
 Swinging for the fences:
- The vita returns as a phone. The switch has shown portable games are still viable, vita has some life in Asian territories, and Sony want to keep the remote play train going. Destined to still fail? Probably! But letâs not let reality kill HYPE.
- Last of Us Part 2 prelude chapter available now, for free. One hour of set up, basically a demo. But thatâs what they do to get the kids excited.
- Spyro Trilogy remastered. Activision gotta do something with the guy.
- Red Dead 2 trailer showcases a train heist. I LOVE train heists.
Nintendo:
In general, there wonât be much or any 3DS. Theyâre getting a lot of that out of the way this week already.
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Xenoblade 2 is not delayed, December 2018. Playable on show floor.
- Mario Odyssey for October 2017. Massive show floor presence.
- Mario Kart DLC, same format as for WiiU â 2 packs of tracks, but this time itâs 8 racing and 2 battle tracks, as well as 3 characters and karts each. A shadow drop of the ability to buy the
- Zelda DLC part 1 shadow drop. Teaser for the rest of the DLC.
- Picross Switch, available now. Not Picross 3D though, theyâll hold off on that.
- Rabbids/Mario gameplay demo
- Dragon Quest XI for Switch officially announced
- Everyone on stage will wear goofy hats because of Mario Odyssey, because hats is a big thing in that game. Hats will grant abilities.
- Splatoon 2 test fire round 2 will be announced to begin the next weekend, with significant tweaks.
- New ARMs content announced, with new ARMs avaialable immediately and
50/50:
- Massive update to switch UI, shadow dropped. Includes multiple UI styles, with Badge arcade built in for further customisation, folders, linking to old Nintendo friends lists, musical themes. Further themes will be on eshop going forward, like 3DS. And finally, this also includes the new online system, hence the new details revealed about it last week.
- Animal Crossing Switch. Early 2018, with much improved social features. Massive amiibo functionality, much like New Leaf now has. Itâll have a new hook, not sure what though. My guess is some Sim City style mayoral stuff like setting up and supplying utilities.
- Warioware Switch, holiday 2017. Itâs been a while for the Rhythm Heaven/Warioware team. I NEED THIS ONE NINTENDO.
- Smash Brothers 4 Switch, Q2 2018, rereleased with the best levels from the WiiU and 3DS levels, plus an expanded single player mode. Itâs just too crowded for this game yet, but they donât need to hold off for too long, because itâll be an evergreen. There will be a teaser though, starring Inklings, Ice Climbers and Spring Man.
- Mario Maker Switch for Q1 2018. It canât release this year, it needs space away from Mario Odyssey. The game will include a new âswitchâ block which when hit in game alternates the game style. There will also be playable Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad for each game type, each with different styles, and a different switch block or pipe that changes your character mid-level.
- Skyward Sword HD for switch, with optional non-motion controls for boring people. Q2 2018.
- Partnership with Activision to make an Amiibo action game. You might think this is a swing for the fence, but: Toys for Bob is out of a gig right now. And this would sell better than any recent Skylanders game. Activision would release special versions of select characters, so they can get their cut from the toy sales.
- Donkey Kong Country Returns 3, Q1 2018, by Monster Games. Theyâve been quiet for a while, they ported Returns to 3DS, they assisted Retro on Tropical Freeze, this is what theyâve been working towards.
- Dead Cells announced for Switch.
- Layton Collection announced⌠for phone. Lady Layton western release date.
- Retroâs game. And itâs NOT Metroid, but a sci-fi Western RPG.
- This is a long shot, but T2 is relatively impressed by the switch, so: GTA5 for Switch. With a chunk of the DLC included.
- Switch Sports, holiday 2017. The return of the king. All the games as released for WiiU, plus a few from Wii Sports resort (airplane), with additional modes for each sport. I do have a âswinging for the fenceâ on this thoughâŚ
 Swinging for the fences:
- âŚWuhu World. Remember Pilotwings 64? Where Little USA was a huge island with different activities, sights to see, and so on? Well, take Wuhu Island, scoot up the detail and resolution, include the small surrounding golf islands, and add a few other themed islands the same size as Wuhu (snow island, city island, etc). Itâs a free game where you get the islands and one activity per island, and can walk/drive around each island. Dotted around each is various locations that count as home bases for various sports/vehicles from Wii Sports, Pilotwings and some new items. Each of these is paid, and comes with various different modes and missions. This could be further expanded over time, and allows Nintendo to make money from series that could no longer be sold alone.
- Mario Kart DLC includes mission mode, which is available day 1 with missions on existing courses and expands with the DLC.
- New 2D Metroid by a small team from within Retro. There is a 3D game teased to be in the works also, but not from Retro.
- Splatoon 2 Octoling content and Amiibo, including Octoling mascots. I need this, Nintendo.
- EXCITE. TRUCK. 2.
- Nintendo Pinball. Remember Pokemon Pinball? And Metroid Prime Pinball? That but across multiple Nintendo series.
- Sonic and Mario All Stars Racing Transformed. Sumo has to have been making something aside from Snake Pass, and Sonic Racing 2 sold extremely well on the switch.
- Assault Android Cactus Deluxe for Switch. I believe in you Tim! Even if you arenât even attempting this!

PLAYING: Oddworld: Abeâs Oddysee
What hopes I had for this franchise. From my recollection, it never quite achieved the epic status it deserved. But replaying it now, I still love it as much as the first day I tried it.
This game has great vibes--even before the main menu is loaded. Mysterious and magical audio tones hauntingly accompany in-universe visuals that identify the makers and producers of this glorious game. Then weâre shown the towering paramite temple as the camera pulls us into the entrance, turning the screen black. Then the title: Oddworld: Abeâs Oddysee is revealed by magical purple sparks. Itâs so 90s.
I used to watch this well-produced opening just for fun.
Then we see Abe as he speaks his iconic âHelloâ. I mean, lots of people say hello, but not like Abe. Here the player can experiment with the âspeakâ function. Itâs a great mechanic, though maybe the developers were overly proud of it. Basically You can tell friends to follow you and wait. You can also whistle and fart.
So the game starts and weâre shown a massive industrial complex. I used to love mechanical stuff. I donât know why, i just loved the aesthetic of rusted machinery churning out smoke and pollution. I was whole heartily against pollution, but this is a video game. We enjoy many things we should not in video games.
Abe introduces us to the scenario, he and his people are slaves at this large meat processing plant called Rupture Farms. Because of over-hunting, theyâve depleted some of their meat resources, while also losing profits. The board wants to know what CEO is gonna do to fix it. Heâs gonna start grinding up Abe and his fellow Mudokons into meaty treats.
As a teenager, the conflict was obvious: exploited workers were going to literally be ground up for profits of a few rich, greedy folks. I didnât realize then how true to the world of capitalism (especially American capitalism) this was. I thought it was just a game. But now I see it as a strong metaphor. Exaggerated, but all the sentiment is pretty accurate. Workers are only valued for their profitability. And profits today are more important to sustainability tomorrow.
After the great opening, the game starts. My plan is just to play through fairly casually: hopefully getting the 50 Mudokons for the good ending. I donât have the patience to aim for all 99. The game tricks you early on, often suggesting you pull levels that immediately result in a mudokonâs death. It was funny, but irritating. Luckily, unlike Jedi Fallen Order, the game reloads quickly and not too far from your failure/death.
I absolutely love how the full-motion-video cinematics seamlessly blend into the 2D gameplay. While the game is played on a 2D plane, the various cutscenes that move us around the environment create a sense of 3D space. Also, this is from the late 90s when CGI film was still fresh and mostly undeveloped. Even a 10 second shot barrels being stamped with a product label was exciting.
Luckily, the cinematics arenât all for show. The game is telling a story and setting a mood.
Iâve replayed the opening several times. All my favorite things where there: Possessing a slig and forcing him to run through electric bolts and exploding as his evaporating remains step on a mine is one my favorites. Itâs gross, and cruel, but so are sligs. They...well, they kind of deserve it.
I love that in this oppressive, industrial manufacturing plant, itâs birds that create portals for escaping mudokons. The battle of nature vs machine is very present. We never know why Abe is able to form portals with his chanting, or take over sligs. We never know why he didnât attempt this before. Oh well.
One of my favorite things is to sneak between shadows right behind a slig. Itâs ridiculously cartoonish--but presented under the context that if youâre caught by the slig, youâll be riddled with a hundred holes from his machine gun. So the comical nature breaks the tension.
I love how the hints in the game, within the factory, are presented via message boards in the background. Thereâs also hints and messages presented on billboards. It keeps everything in-universe, but also helpful. It doesnât break the suspension of belief for me at all.
One sign warns that if you leave the area, all 15 mudokons on this level will die. This is confirmed one a âscoreboardâ of sorts once you leave, showing how many mudokons remain imprisoned, how many have been rescued, and sadly...how many have died. While Iâm not going for secrets, I make sure to rescue every mudokon I find in the main level, and restart if one dies.
After escaping the inner plan, weâre treated to a comical video of Abe falling into a barrel, and then getting his head hit against a pipe--which causes him to fall inside the barrel, hiding him from the sligs stationed around the corner. Very slapstick, but not excessively goofy. It plays up the idea that Abe is an unassuming hero. He never thought of himself as great, nor did he have lofty dreams of being a savior. But fate has moved him into position to change the world.
Now, we get to the factory exterior. This is when we first see scrabs, but theyâre in silhouette, so we donât get a good look. This part is aesthetically interesting, As Abe moves away from the factory, the sky changes from a sickly green, to a haunting blue. Metal platforms, guard towers, and industrial equipment give way to a rocky, barren waste with some abandoned wooden structures sprinkled through out. Sounds of machines are replaced by chirping bats. Tips are not presented via magical fireflies instead of digital marquees.
Weâre in transition to nature, but the transition is not sudden. Itâs a fade. But the presence of sligs, mines, and lethal security devices have not faded with industrial scenery.
I just keep going on-and-on and Iâm barely an hour into the game. Itâs just great, and genius, and perfect!
While the aesthetics, tones, themes are perfect--this is a game and we need to discuss gameplay:
Movement can be very exact. Itâs not as fluid and free form as something like Crash Bandicoot or Donkey Kong Country. But thatâs good, because thereâs a lot of challenging traps that require precise timing. Unfortunately, this makes the jumping while running weird. You basically have to press jump right before you actually want to jump. The game, after receiving the jump input, waits until Abe is in the next âspaceâ before performing the jump. It took a few minutes to get used to it agin.
Talking to mudokons is simple, but fun. Itâs unfortunate that you canât have more than one mudoken follow you. It leads to a lot of back tracking, and repeated actions. But itâs not been too annoying yet. Farting to make the mudokons laugh is also enjoyable.
Speaking of talking, itâs fun to taunt the sligs. As Abe, if you say âHiâ they express disgust. But as a fellow slig, the reply in kind. Also as a slig you can say âLook outâ and theyâll often respond with help. Screaming âlook outâ also causes Mudokons in the area to duck, giving you clean shots at enemy sligs.
While the game features platforming and shooting, I really see it as a puzzle game. Thereâs some room for less than precise solutions ,but for the most part every section and frame is designed for the player to overcome it a specific way. This isnât too frustrating, as it doesnât take much to resolve the solutions, and somehow it doesnât feel like scenarios repeat themselves exactly. Because the screen doesnât scroll, each frame you walk into feels like its own mini-objective. So youâre not over-burdened with solving the whole area at once. You take it bit-by-bit.
While the game slowly introduces new elements and challenges, often repeating the same scenarios with the slightest of variations, because the environment and storytelling are so interesting, you donât worry about it as much. You just enjoy the ride. And as gory as the game can be, thereâs a certain entertainment to even dying. I donât get frustrated, so much as chuckle: âWell that didnât workâ.
I didnât expect to write so much, but Iâve loved this game and Iâm falling in love all over again. Iâm also not going to check for typos--so good luck to any poor soul that bothers reading this (and future me).

The worst online service gave us one of the yearâs best online games ⢠Eurogamer.net
Over the festive break weâll be running through our top 20 picks of the yearâs best games, leading up to the reveal of Eurogamerâs game of the year on New Yearâs Eve. You can find all the pieces published to date here â and thanks for joining us throughout the year!
Over a year after its belated release, thereâs no denying one incontrovertible truth. Nintendo still canât do online gaming, and Nintendo Switch Online â well, to put it simply, it kind of sucks. For a service that remains so severely limited, Iâd almost be appalled at the gall of charging 17.99 for something that lacks so much basic functionality. But â and hereâs the kick â the worst online gaming service is where youâll find one of the best online games of the year.
It helps, of course, that that particular game is built around Tetris â and if thereâs one other incontrovertible truth around these parts itâs that Tetris, across its many variations, remains the ultimate game. Tetris 99 might be one of the most fascinating variations since⌠Well, since last yearâs Tetris Effect. Tetris 99 works as a beautiful counterpoint to that blissed out meditation, though, and whereas Tetris Effect didnât offer straight-up multiplayer, Tetris 99 offers almost nothing but.
youtube
The premise reads like some throwaway joke you might have half-heartedly given a like to on Twitter before forgetting about it completely; it is Tetris does Battle Royale, with 99 players fighting it out to the bitter end. It might well have remained a joke, if it wasnât the for the expertise and execution of Arika, developers of the superlative Tetris: The Grand Master series that still finds use in competitive play to this day.
You know Tetris, sure, and Tetris 99 rolls out a familiar take on the classic. But itâs also full of secrets â thereâs so much depth hidden away if you want to find it â and itâs emboldened by the constant thrill of competitive play. Iâd say thereâs enough there, in that main mode and the pull of achieving top spot and Tetris Maximus, to keep you going for an age, but since launch a handful of additions that have been made to make it ludicrously compelling.
Thereâs the old faithful Marathon mode, Team Battles that further ape the Battle Royale genre, CPU fights against 98 AI or just straight-up versus mode. There are fresh skins to unlock (although trust me â grind out 15 tickets and invest in the Donkey Kong one. Itâs all youâll ever need), daily challenges that gently inform the way people play (get stuck in when one of the challenges requires acquiring a certain number of KOs in a single match and youâll notice that everyone plays that bit more aggressively) and special timed events where you can get new themed wallpapers (and youâre finally able to unlock those you might have missed thanks to the most recent update).
And beyond all that thereâs faithful old Tetris, as satisfying and exhilarating now as it was in its late 80s heyday. There have been countless retellings and remixes over the years, pushing and pulling Alexey Pajitnovâs formula in new and surprising ways. Tetris 99 stands alongside last yearâs Tetris Effect as one of the very best yet.

Nintendo Direct Blathering
(What, me remember to hit post after I write something? ha. Well that was a fantastic Nintendo Direct - worth the wait in my opinion, though please Nintendo don't make us wait that long again!)
Video Link
*screams in Mario* I'm so so so excited for Mario Maker 2!! So excited I missed the bulk of the announcement and had to watch it over again because omg there's so much to be excited about here - slopes! switches! the themes! Luigi! It's coming out in June!!! I love the original Mario Maker, though I admit I didn't play all that much of it. I'm... not that good at old school Mario. I get through the games, somehow, but I'm definitely below the average skill level. Or at least I feel like that. It doesn't take away that I love the games though, and more then playing Mario Maker I love watching truly skilled players play it and the sound of it is sort of comforting? So I've fallen asleep to Mario Maker more times then I can count, and I'm looking forward to doing the same with Mario Maker 2. Fingers crossed for thwimps!
That Marvel game is mildly interesting, in that they spent so much time highlight Captain Marvel - it seems like a gesture of confidence in that movie, and that's promising. It's something similar with Joker in Smash - they aren't showing much of him, which is interesting because there's a big Persona 5 announcement planned for March. If Joker being in Smash is part of Persona 5 getting a switch release then it sort of makes sense to hold back. Yeah I'm pulling for a switch release of Persona 5, and I'm more hopeful for it after seeing the push for hardcore games. I hate that term, hardcore. The games it describes aren't necessarily harder than other games, and the easy games aren't any less core to a system's library. But what else do you call those games? Anyway, after seeing that sort of games, the Final Fantasy, the Dragon Quests, the Assassin's Creeds, the Hellblades, and even strong rumors of the Kingdom Hearts games? I feel confident in having some hope for Persona 5.
I love that Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is getting some love, because I'd really like to see a sequel to that one - there's so much more they could do with that concept and I'd like to see it. I have that one on the Wii U, but if I had the cash to burn on buying a game I already own? I would.Â
Bloodstained looks amazing. The Castlevania games are one of the gaps in my gaming experience, as I've only loved them from a distance, but I'd love to dig into Bloodstained. It looks like all the best parts of the SoTN style games, but polished and with a female protagonist.
I'm not really a fan of the series, but I've heard such good things about Dragon Quest 11 I can't help but be excited for it. I'm always down for a solid jrpg experience. Because of it's release window I imagine it's going to be my birthday game. I suppose it shows my age as a gamer that I can't quite escape the console wars mentality, and oh does it feel like a coup to have the definitive version of the game be on a Nintendo console. That's one of those good signs about the Switch and big games.
Oninaki looks beautiful. Again, I'm a sucker for pretty jrpgs. 'Deep, single player campaign' is my ultimate catnip, and I am Setsuna has been on my radar for forever. *sobs over empty wallet*
I of course downloaded and played through the Yoshi's Crafted World demo immediately. It's a delightful game, and I don't know why I'm surprised about that because of course it's a delightful game! Epic Yarn and Woolly World were delightful games so how could Crafted World be anything else? I love games that just give me a mode like Mellow Mode, so I can chill out and play a game, and it's not like it strips the challenge out of the game like some people might think. The end of March is awfully close, I need to start saving...
Fire Emblem isn't my game at all, but I have to admit on second viewing of the direct Three Houses is kind of sucking me in.
Like everyone else I downloaded Tetris 99. I'm... not great at tetris, but it's more fun to lose then I thought it would be. A nice little distraction game.
Final Fantasy VII on the switch is just.... *vibrates with excitement* FF7! Portable!! Final Fantasy IX too! I still wonder what the deal is with Final Fantasy VIII being missing in action. I'll have to look into that when I've got a spare moment.
Astral Chain is a game that at first game I wouldn't be in to - actiony, not much there to hook into. But made by Platinum Games? *hearteyes* *hearteyes* Bayonetta 3 still happily in development? *HEARTEYES INTENSIFIES* thank goodness they said something, I imagine if they didn't there'd be an uproar because of the uncertainty after Metroid Prime 4 getting restarted out of the blue. I buy the theory MP4 got handed back to Retro because Retro is finished with whatever they were working on and I'm dying to know what that was. A rerelease of the Metroid Prime Trilogy? Donkey Kong? Something new??
With a lineup like this it's hard to say they saved the best for last, but they certainly saved some strong hype for last. Link's Awakening!! I knew it was that the moment I saw the waves, just.... *screams in Zelda* That artstyle(I typo'd 'heartstyle' there, and honestly? yes!!!), that music! *buries face in hands and happy cries* Every time, it's like coming home. I don't even like that high bloom, out of focus edges graphical style, but it looks good here and I will follow Link any where.
Not part of the direct, but I the news about the Hollow Knight sequel is intriguing. Again, aren't played Hollow Knight - too poor - but the style is beautiful and I don't need to play to know the gameplay is excellent. Silksong looks like more of the same, but better and with a female protagonist. Makes me wish I'd backed the kickstarter to get in on both of these games. Â

More than just Woo-Pig.
48 HOURS
IN
FayettevillE
More Than Just Woo-Pig.
The Hogs will forever reign supreme up on the hill in Fayetteville â even when the football and basketball teams are in shambles. But say, "Who pig?" and plan your visit on a weekend when there's not a big game. You might want to bring a bike and use the Razorback Regional Greenway to pedal around town and all the way north to Bentonville. That would help you burn off all the calories you're going to pile on touring Fayetteville's fantastic food and bar scene.
Day 1:
Start with a burger in a basement
"Housed in a cellar location straight out of a Beat poem, it's the kind of place that'll make even an oldster feel like the clock has been wound back to the glory days the minute you walk in the door," the Arkansas Times once wrote in a review of Hugo's (25 1/2 N. Block Ave.), a Fayetteville institution since 1977. Most of the decor appears not to have changed since then. Hugo's will hopefully forever be a bit dingy. That's the way we like it. There's no better place in Fayetteville to grab a burger and a beer.
Buy books, records
The best book shopping in Arkansas is in Fayetteville. Dickson Street Bookshop (325 W. Dickson St.), where used and out-of-print books are bought and sold ("where good books go to good people" is the store's motto), is a rabbit warren of literary delights in which bibliophiles can happily lose an hour or two. Nightbird Books (205 W. Dickson St.) sells a smart and broad collection of new books for adults and children. It's got everything an indie bookstore fan could want: pet birds to admire, an in-store coffee shop and comfy chairs. Block Street Records (17 N. Block Ave.) is the record shop every college town should have now that the kids are buying vinyl again. It's got a wide selection of obscure as well as popular new and used albums, a knowledgeable staff, and it's open daily with hours that stretch to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
You need nature
And Lake Fayetteville and the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks will provide. You didn't bring a boat, of course, but no worry: Lake Fayetteville will rent you one for its calm, no-wake waters. Or climb back on your mountain bike and check out the surrounding area. The 6.9-mile nature trail is a destination for bird watchers and others who like to walk in the woods, and it goes right by the Botanical Garden. There's a $7 ticket, but you'll see 12 themed gardens, a butterfly house and learn about bats or succulents or tea â whatever is being offered in the garden's educational program.
Grab a drink and some nostalgia
Maxine Miller sits at the head of the table of the Arkansas Bar Hall of Fame (which does not, but should, exist!). As a 24-year-old single woman in 1950, she opened Maxine's Tap Room at 107 N. Block Ave. For more than 50 years, Miller presided over the smoky shotgun bar, perched on the only green stool in a line of a red ones, sipping coffee and playing dominos, while generations of students stopped in for cold beer, a beloved jukebox and a try on an arcade bowling game known as "Ding Ding." In her later years, Miller sold T-shirts that read, "It was your parents' bar. Now it's yours." When Miller died in 2006, her family kept the bar open, but a fire forced it to close for a year, among other setbacks. But in 2013, the owners of nearby Block Avenue businesses The Little Bread Co., Terra Tots and Hammer & Chisel stepped in to operate the bar. They gave it a update, stripping out drop ceilings and peeling back some of the bric-brac, and introducing a smart, classic cocktail menu. It remains one of the best bars in Arkansas. Bonus points: Former Arkansas Times arts and entertainment editor and professional music nerd Robert Bell often DJs there.
Head south to the Mill District
Restaurateurs Jerrmy Gawthrop and Clayton Suttle have made South Fayetteville a food and drink destination. In 2006, they opened Greenhouse Grille (418 S. School Ave.), a "new American" restaurant that specializes in innovative takes on comfort food and relies heavily on local ingredients. Naturally, it's vegetarian and vegan friendly, though you can also get beef tenderloin served with bleu cheese butter. In 2014, Gawthrop and Suttle opened Wood Stone Craft Pizza + Bar just to the south of Greenhouse Grille (557 S. School Ave.). It's a similar formula to Greenhouse, with lots of local ingredients inventively combined, but on pizza cooked in a wood oven. You'll also find a happening bar scene, with a wide selection of Arkansas craft beers and craft cocktails; there's boozy root beer and dreamsicle floats, too. Both restaurants are easily accessible for bikers or walkers on the Frisco Trail, part of the Razorback Regional Greenway.
Stay downtown ... or on the outskirts
The former Cosmopolitan Hotel underwent a complete redesign and renovation, which included replacing and updating furniture, fixtures, plumbing and electrical systems, before reopening in 2012 as The Chancellor (70 N. East Ave.), a boutique hotel with 92 rooms and 15 suites, modern decor and an affordable price point (rooms start at $99). It's downtown near the square and within walking distance of campus and many of our recommendations for food, drink and fun. Or stay at the Inn at the Mill (3906 Johnson Mill Blvd.) just outside of town, in Johnson, near Arvest Park, where the Northwest Arkansas Naturals play. The late Fayetteville architect James Lambeth restored the Johnson Mill, part of which dates back before the Civil War (some of it was burned after the battle of Pea Ridge and reconstructed after the war), in the 1990s and constructed the inn around it. His daughter, Courtney James, and her husband, Miles James, ran it and the restaurant James at the Mill. The Jameses sold the property earlier this year and the new owners plan to turn the restaurant into additional space for lodging. In the meantime, what's there has been recently renovated.
Day 2:
Grab breakfast or brunch or toast at Arsaga's
Cary and Cindy Arsaga opened the first location of Arsaga Coffee Co. in 1992. Since then, the Arsaga family has become near synonymous with coffee in Fayetteville, adding new locations and its own warehouse roastery. In 2012, they transformed a long dilapidated freight train building into what became Arsaga's at the Depot (548 W. Dickson St.), an all-day restaurant that specializes in crepes, but also does sandwiches, salads, loaded fries and big breakfast plates. It's got a big outdoor porch that overlooks the Frisco Trail. In 2016, the family opened Arsaga's Church & Center (200 W. Center), nicknamed "Toast," because the shop only sells coffee and other drinks and loaded thick-cut toasts â like the Boss Hog (smoked pork, pimento cheese, pickled carrot, parsley and mojo verde on multigrain bread) or the Toast Shop Crunch (buttered and sugared sourdough topped with sweet maple cream and fresh fruit).
Art and architecture
The stomping grounds of E. Fay Jones and Edward Durrell Stone ought to have some architecture to look at, right? Stone designed the Fine Arts Center building on the UA campus, the Sigma Nu house and other buildings. Jones, the famed creator of Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, who taught at the UA, which named its architecture school for him, designed many of the fabulous mid-century homes you see tucked into Fayetteville's hills. In fact, Fayetteville is lousy with architectural firms and exciting 21st century designs by the DeMx, Marlon Blackwell, David McKee firms and others. If it's old you're into, Fayetteville has that in spades, too: In 1853, a century before Jones was bringing his version of Prairie-style works to town, Col. Tebbets built his place at 118 E. Dickson St. It's now the home of the Washington County Historical Society. Even earlier, in 1845, Judge David Walker built a home at 207 Center St.; it's one of the few properties, like the Col. Tebbets house, to survive the Civil War; now called the Walker-Stone House, it hosts exhibits of fine art. The oldest standing building in Fayetteville is the Ridge House, a portion of which dates to 1830.
Like Fort Smith, Fayetteville has joined the mural movement, with the Green Candy public art project. Check out "Owl" on the east side of the former Mountain Inn building; it's a three-story work by Puerto Rican artist Alexis Diaz. There's a timely eclipse mural by Argentinian street artist Marina Zumi on the west side of Hog Haus Brewing Co. And Fayetteville artist Jason Jones is the creator of the gas-masked rabbit at 545 W. Center St.
After you've seen what's outside, go indoors to see what's on the walls at the Walton Arts Center's Joy Pratt Markham Gallery. Before the renovation of the UA Fine Arts Center â part of the $120 million, Walton-family-supported School of Art that will be built during the next five years â see what's up in the gallery there. Ride your bike there; you'll never find a place to park.
Too much culture for you?
If you like your fun with a big helping of nostalgia, the Arkadia Retrocade (1478 N. College Ave.) is the place to get your fix on Asteroids, Galaga, Donkey Kong and other classic arcade games for one low entry fee.
Refresh in style ... or waste the afternoon and evening at adult playland
The restored Carnall Hall, the turn-of-the-century women's dorm that has been transformed into luxe lodging, has a terrific dark and cozy bar called the Lambeth Lounge. It's got that swank, intellectual Algonquin Round Table feel. And if you pull a Dorothy Parker and have one too many, no matter: Ella's Restaurant is in Carnall Hall, too, and it's a white-tablecloth, crab cakes and tenderloin kind of place.
On the other hand, JJ's Beer Garden & Brewing Co. (3615 N. Steel Blvd.), owned by JJ's Grill restaurateur Jody Thornton, is a 12,000-square-foot brewpub that has it all: beer brewed on location, a huge menu of pub grub and an outdoor barbecue food truck, and a massive outdoor patio and play area with a 16-by-19-foot TV, shuffleboard, cornhole, ping pong, bocce ball, sand volleyball and even a wading pool. You can imagine that things get a little crazy here on game days.

POST 6:Â âCompetitionâ
Disneyland is in the amusement park industry. It operates in southern California and is affected by the regional culture of this area. The main generational cohort that Disney targets is digital natives. Therefore, Disneylandâs competitors are those firms that offer similar goods and services in the same area and target the same market. Disneylandâs key competitors include Universal Studios Hollywood, Knottâs Berry Farm, Sea World San Diego, and Six Flags Magic Mountain. Disneyland is the innovation leader in the amusement park industry and has the largest, most loyal following of the parks in the area due to its well-established brand name and superior customer service. In some ways, Disneyland is isolated from its competitors, but there are still some things Disneyland should watch out for from competitors.
Disneyland had 17,943,000 visitors in 2016, compared to 8,086,000 for Universal Studios Hollywood, 4,014,000 for Knottâs Berry Farm, 3,528,000 for Sea World San Diego, and 3,332,000 for Six Flags Magic Mountain (Rubin, 2017). These numbers indicate that Disneyland holds a comfortable lead in market share over the competition at around 25% for Parks and Resorts in the area (csimarket.com). Disneyland is definitely not the price leader in its industry, but isnât the most expensive option either. With ticket prices starting at $97, Disneyland is significantly more expensive than Knottâs Berry Farm (tickets starting at $45), Sea World San Diego (tickets starting at $69.99), and Six Flags Magic Mountain (tickets start at $55.99). However, Universal Studios Hollywood was actually more expensive than Disneyland on the day I did my research, with tickets starting at $99. Universal Studios was also offering Southern California residents special pricing as well as monthly payment options, making it the most like Disneyland as far as pricing and deals goes.
Some of Disneylandâs competition has suffered from decreased attendance due to social trends like animal rights beliefs. The evaluative criteria of the modern consumer have changed, and treatment of animals has become a determinant attribute for many consumers. Sea World has been under fire in recent years for ethics concerns regarding treatment of animals, leading to negative word of mouth and a decreased attendance rate for them while the other parksâ attendance went up, highlighting the importance of ethics while doing business.
Universal Studios seems to be Disneylandâs main competitor in the theme park industry, despite bringing in less than half of the visitors Disneyland does. The park reached capacity for the first time ever in 2017 with estimations of over 40,000 people attending the park in one day. Universal Studios has also announced a partnership with Nintendo to add attractions based on Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong (Martin, 2017). Disneyland should note that Universal Studios is definitely attempting to sway consumers from Disneyland to its own park, expanding their park with new attractions and changes as well as using their established image within the movie industry to draw crowds in to real-life sets of their favorite movies, like Fast & Furious and King Kong, as well as their most recent addition, a Harry Potter themed area of the park. Universal Studios also offers Universal CityWalk, a three-block shopping center similar to Disneylandâs Downtown Disney. Disneyland must be wary of cheaper alternatives and the growing popularity of competition.
