Hexel's World Tour Week 6 – Seoul

Everyone, I'm home. I know it sounds so cliche, but the moment I got off the plane in Seoul, I felt like I was coming home🇰🇷❤️. I already knew I could speak Korean, so getting through the airport and to the main city was a breeze (but can we talk about Incheon airport? It is so cool. I could literally spend a whole day at just the airport). I quickly got to my hotel in the middle of Seoul and it is way too nice. I feel like an imposter staying here hahaha.

There are some parts of the city that feel so familiar to me, even though I can't fully remember them. One day, I ended up just walking instinctively to this hole-in-the-wall kalgooksu restaurant and had the best noodle soup ever! 🍜(or I think it's the best I've ever had. It also felt so familiar!) Another place that felt super familiar was Dongdaemun and the Design Plaza. It kind of looks like a spaceship, but I knew exactly where to exit the subway station to get there. It was like instinct. The markets in Dongdaemun are so nice! They have so much fashion and accessories 👗 it was all so overwhelming. But I was able to buy gifts for Georgia while I was there

Talking about cool shops, I just wandered around Insadong for like half a day. There are so many side streets with cafes and small shops that you wouldn't even know were there unless you went to explore. From Insadong, I ended up walking to Bukchon traditional village. Both Insadong and Bukchon are known for their traditional hanok houses. And you all, I could LIVE in one of these. They're so beautiful and smell amazing like wood and paper! I found a place in one of these hanok houses called Aromind which lets you design your own perfume scent! It was so cool and I made one for Krista (hope she likes it!) 🎁

I also wrote down all the food places I loved to go with Dustin if we ever come to Seoul together, including this place that does bbq ribs DIPPED 🍖🧀 in melted cheese and a jjajangmyeon place that handrolls their noodles! I wanted to get Dustin a whole package of Hanwoo--prime Korean BBQ beef (did you know you could buy those?!)--but I was worried about getting it through customs, also, it was a lot to ship back to the US. So I got Dustin some green tea from Ossulloc 🍵, I know it's not technically food, but it's food adjacent! And their tea house in Gwanhun-Dong was so gorgeous with all the traditional ceramics and the little displays about how the teas are roasted! Plus, they're right by Jogyesa Buddhist Temple. They told me Jogyesa is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The building dates back to the late 14th century! And you can write your wish on a piece of paper and hang it like a little flag. All the wishes fluttering in the air were so beautiful!

I didn't mean to organize my tour around Seoul based on buying the perfect gifts for my friends, but it turned out that way. So I knew I had to find something amazing for Mac, and I did in Gangnam! That neighborhood kind of reminds me of midtown New York with all the skyscrapers and the fancy hotels and buildings. They have the flagship store to this amazing sunglasses store called Gentle Monster. But they don't just sell sunglasses, they also have amazing art displays that the store clerk told me rotates regularly! In fact, lots of the cool high fashion stores do fun artsy displays in Seoul! From there, I just popped over to Lotte World Tower and bought ALL the duty free skincare! I can't wait to try all my facemasks with the band! Apparently Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea. And they even have an aquarium in there!

Across the Seoul City Hall are couples skating in the center of the bright-lit Seoul Plaza, half-oblivious and half-absorbed with the gentle snow drizzle...Passers-by, on the other hand, race against time to catch the busy subway...These are images of a multi-faceted Seoul-a city full of life, romance, advancement, youthfulness, modernity and heritage. It is stunningly beautiful, refreshingly alive and simply mesmerizing.

Thanks to the "Hallyu" phenomenon, the wonders and culture of the Oriental city has reached far beyond Asia, conquering Americans, Europeans and Latin Americans as well. However, contrary to the elegant and expensive image the city projects, there are places you can enjoy even on a budget or even for free!

Travelling in Korea need not be costly. How? First of all, you've got the option of riding the inexpensive subway system that takes you anywhere you want to go with its several route lines. You can also take the bus which has several stations across the city. What is left for you to think about is your itinerary. Well, if you are set to tour Seoul on a budget, here are some places you shouldn't miss:

1. Cheonggyecheon (Cheonggye Stream)

Once an ignored overpass back in the 70s, this long stream stretching across the city now bursts with inviting charm from the serene sound of water and colorful lights at night. The stream was restored in October 2005 by then-Seoul mayor and now President Lee Myung-Bak. Nothing compares to spending your day here at the stream, cozily playing with water and admiring pieces of art surrounding the place. It is frequented by families as the stream presents a fresh break from buzz of the city above it.

Things you can see here include the grand fountain, the wishing wall, active aquatic life, sculpture and more. Try crossing the Dapgyonori on Gwangtong Bridge on the first full moon as people believe that doing so will save you from leg ailments for the whole year. Cost: Free.

How to go there: Get off at Jongno 3-ga of Line 3 or Gwanghwamun of Line 5.

2. Namdaemun and Dongdaemun

From the Cheonggye stream, you can walk to the nearest shopping areas Namdaemun and Dongdaemun. These are two of the most famous flee markets in Seoul. Namdaemun means "Great South Gate" and Dongdaemun, "Great East Gate". For sure, experiencing these places will engage all of your five senses. See the sights, smell and taste the food, hear the trade and feel the people. Namdaemun offers you items on wholesale and retail with its more than a thousand shops, stores and vendors. Along the streets and alleys of Namdaemun are souvenir shops where you can buy Korean dolls, keychains, fans, masks and other traditional items. Also, street foods like odeng and tteokpokki are available. This place closes every Sunday.

How to go there: Get off at Hoehyeon Station of Line 4.

Another must-see place is Dongdaemun, where shopping never ends. You can also get stuff on wholesale or retail here. There are around 26 shopping malls in this area, two of the most known as Migliore and Doosan Tower. Products range from clothes, shoes, to souvenirs, house items and electrical supplies, etc. It is also closes every Sunday but is open until 5 a.m. on other days. Cost: No Fees

How to go there: Get off at Dongdaemun Station of Line 1 or 4.

3. Hangang (Han River)

How would you like the fresh breeze of river water blowing against your skin, at the same time enjoying the sights of the whole city such as the Seoul Tower, 63 Building and so on? This is possible in Hangang. Being the fourth longest river in Korea, Hangang offers a pleasurable experience for sports activities, sightseeing and relaxation.

I went to the Dongdaemun markets with my friend, and while walking out, we saw that a flea market was opened? sikhye, hallabong juice, various types of fruit jam, bread··· but my footsteps kept moving mindlessly (through the market) so as if i was possessed, my friend and i reached a lady selling ssamjang and doenjang in front of us. for the people who wanted to purchase, they could have made a wrap (with the pastes) and had a taste... i wondered if this is what it was like to be possessed while talking about this and that with my friend, we went to eat jjamppong. i want to eat it again.

when i was little and saw the grandmas selling vegetables on the street, i said that when i became an adult, i was going to buy everything. yet it still seems far away. whenever i would see a grandma on the street, i would come to a halting stop. when i miss my grandma, i feel like this. of course, i went to see her yesterday.

anyways, to share the joys and sorrows of someone with the things made up in a person's heart the things put up on the shelves of the flea market also seem have their own stories so that's why i like vintage a lot. how will you come to meet me? fate is something that is quite amazing.

Hexel's World Tour – Week 8 Indonesia

I can't believe I'm in my final destination! This month has flown by… what a whirlwind this trip has been. I am ending my trip in Indonesia! You all know me by now, so you know I had to go shopping! I was told to visit Jalan Surabaya Flea Market in Menteng! It was HUGE, just stalls and stalls of arts and crafts, fabrics, food, wood carvings! I asked one of the stall ladies and I think she told me that it's been around since the '70s. Or maybe she was saying the price of something was 70,000 Indonesian rupiah... Anyway, I got some souvenirs for the band. I even bargained the price down (which I learned to do when I was at Dongdaemun in Seoul! 🎁💵

For sightseeing I went to Monas Tower and visited the observation deck. It was fun to see the whole city! There were explanations at the tower saying that it's a symbol of independence in Indonesia which was declared in 1945 after years of Dutch colonial rule.

Since there are so many islands in Indonesia, I wanted to visit some other ones, so I flew over to the Nusa Islands. There are so many beautiful beaches here and I tried to visit more than just one. They had really cool rock formations at a lot of them, and each of them had cool names like "Devil's Tear" or "Angel's Billabong." 🏖️🌊🗿

Then, for non-beach fun, I went to Pura Paluang, which is a temple but the shrines are shaped like houses and cars. Which is why some people call it "Car Temple."🚗

From Nusa, it was a quick flight to Komodo National Park for a day trip to see the Komodo dragons!🦎 They are so big! I was a little scared of them. Not as scared as when these scary guys chased me and Krista into an alley once (long story) but scared enough that I followed all the instructions of the tour guide and didn't get close at all! I am going to fly back to Jakarta and try to visit more museums. If you've been there, let me know where to go while I'm still here!

I have to admit I really miss my friends. These adventures by myself were fun and I had so much time to learn about the world and think about myself but I'm also glad I'm going home to Plainsville soon!
