Anhedonia (Penelope Avenlee, she/her) is the co-host of a Dissociative Identity Disorder system, alongside the host, Daydreamer (Penny Avenlee, she/her). The system shares the ability to manifest mental/emotional states into reality: Anhedonia's powers symbolize depressive exhaustion, draining color and heat from the world around her, and enabling her to summon swaths of thick smoke which she can manipulate. In contrast, Daydreamer's powers symbolize creativity, summoning whimsical technicolor flowers and animals to assist her with various tasks.

Anhedonia previously held Daydreamer's title as part of a team of heroes called the Five Senses, a ragtag group of small-time heroes looking to gain popularity. The Five Senses were led by Mesmerism (Alexandra "Xandra" Donelle, she/her), a strict and controlling hero with the ability to manipulate others through hypnosis, and her hotheaded boyfriend, Double Exposure (Gunnar Duff, he/him). As the previous host, Anhedonia saw Mesmerism as a friend and admired her as a leader, failing to see the red flags in her leadership and friendship for all her excitement at simply being included in a real hero team.

Her boyfriend Poison Oak (Finnegan Arbor, he/him), a bashful and soft-spoken man, fought alongside her in the Five Senses, and was the team's main defense. For all his gentleness, Poison Oak was a force to be reckoned with; physically sturdy and with the ability to summon huge trees and poisonous foliage from otherwise barren ground, he could easily manipulate the terrain around the team to their advantage during battle.

Besides his girlfriend, however, he struggled to gain the approval of his teammates, particularly Mesmerism. Schisms between himself and the others became more and more frequent as Mesmerism got possessive over Anhedonia (then Daydreamer)'s time and attention, and his concerns about her behavior were repeatedly silenced. At the time, Anhedonia didn't have the will to speak up, too intimidated by Mesmerism, and too nervous to rock the boat. After all, she loved them both, and whenever she spoke up, it made Mesmerism cry. Poison Oak reassured her that it was alright, and put his head down, continuing to do his job. The both of them silently hoped that they'd eventually reach a place where they could make it on their own.

But that day was not allowed to come. During a particularly gruesome battle, against a threat that far outmatched the newcomer team, Mesmerism and Double Exposure got frightened and bailed out, forcefully dragging their other teammates with them and leaving Poison Oak to fight on his own. Their betrayal cost him his life.

The trauma of losing Poison Oak caused the system to split, restricting the trauma to Anhedonia's memory, rendering her dormant and creating a new alter - the current Daydreamer - to take her place as the host of the system. As a newly formed alter, Daydreamer was extremely lost and confused, and relied on Mesmerism's word to find her way; Mesmerism took advantage of her amnesia in order to cover up Poison Oak's death. As far as Daydreamer knew, Poison Oak never existed at all, and the team had always been more simply called The Senses. Daydreamer remains hesitantly loyal to Mesmerism, for now, although her loved ones outside the team urge her to leave.

Anhedonia, however, is no longer the woman she once was. Once she emerged from dormancy, her pain and anger had changed her. Poison Oak's death opened her eyes to Mesmerism's corruption, and in a spiral of grief she cast off her heroic identity, swearing herself to villainy and the destruction of the Senses. Her once colorful and sweet appearance drained to a smoky gray, and she took the name Anhedonia, vowing to have her revenge.

... But she realized pretty quickly that villainy is, like, really hard, actually. True to her name, Anhedonia is deeply depressed, and usually exhausted. Despite keeping her supervillain title, she often finds herself without the energy to really do anything that evil, and it dawned on her that without Daydreamer working for the Senses, they wouldn't be employed or making money. And besides, the relationship between Daydreamer and Mesmerism is, like, super complicated and she doesn't exactly have the wherewithal to untangle that shit with her right now. And Mesmerism doesn't even know she's a system. Ultimately, her grand plan for revenge is on hold, and although she still has unknowable rage in her heart for Mesmerism, right now she just kind of wants to grieve and smoke weed in the back of her best friend's van. At night, she likes to chase passersby around with faceless figures made of smoke, for a laugh.

Anhedonia is best friends with Pixie (Pandora "Pixie" Morel, they/any), Daydreamer's partner. She refers to them unofficially as her henchman, although they frankly aren't very useful to her. Despite this, though, the two are inseparable, and Anhedonia loves them deeply. Within the system, she takes on multiple roles as a co-host, protector, trauma holder, and gatekeeper, and is a bit of a control freak, frequently overworking herself to the chagrin of the system's other protectors. Her relationship with Daydreamer is strained, at once frustrated by her refusal to leave Mesmerism and concerned for her safety.
