So I recently found out that Richard Stevenson, the author of the Donald Strachey mysteries, passed away in 2022 and I feel these books and their movie adaptations are WOEFULLY under appreciated pieces of gay media history. The first book, Death Trick, was released in 1981 and he continued writing Strachey books all the way up to 2019 so there's plenty to sink your teeth into on top of all his other work. Needless to say I recommend them for a fun but grounded look at gay culture in a neo noir setting. And you know, fuck it, download the 4 movie adaptations from HereTV from my google drive. The first movie is Third Man Out. Go Forth And Enjoy Gay Detectives!

A bunch of the movies I've posted are based on books and you can definitely find a number that way. Off the top of my head, here's a few more:
The Broken Earth Trilogy, N.K. Jameson
The Donald Strachey Mysteries, Richard Stevenson (there are like 20 of them)
The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. LeGuin
Covering, Kenji Yoshino
Jeb and Dash: A Diary of Gay Life 1918-1945, Jeb Alexander
Out of Sync, Lance Bass
Thank you for these, especially the nonfiction! I've got everything queued except for the Donald Strachey Mysteries, which I'll work on queuing!
(PS I love your blog, I've added so many movies to my to-watch list because of it!)

While everyone goes nuts over Benoit Blanc (haven't seen those movies yet... the general concensus seems to be that it's worth watching?), can we please remember to appreciate the OG™ gay detective Donald Strachey. Always a soft spot in my heart. ❤

hey any gay movie recommendations for a bunch of idiot queer babies in need of gay shit to entertain us
Absolutely! I'll even break them down by streaming service so you can figure out which are available to you.
Netflix
Cloudburst (2011): Road trip romcom about a couple of older lesbians running away to Canada to get married and picking up a hot young hitchhiker on the way. Bittersweet ending but absolutely worth the ride. One of my all time favorite movies.
Dear Ex (2018): A Taiwanese movie about grief and family. After his father's death, a young boy gets to know his dead father's male lover and learns about what their relationship had been like. Incredibly moving. Please watch it.
Alice Junior (2019): A Brazillian movie about a trans girl moving to a new high school. Trigger warning for some intense scenes of transphobia, but overall it's a really fun and heartwarming coming of age film.
Hulu
Breaking Fast (2020): A Ramadan holiday romcom. Very fun and feel-good, and I really appreciate how it explores the different ways that gay people come to terms with the religions they were raised with.
Bound (1996): Extremely sexy and stylish lesbian mob thriller. One of the Wachowskis' early films. Just incredible on every level. This movie deserves to be way more well-known than it is.
Wild Nights with Emily (2018): Extremely fun and funny biopic about Emily Dickinson. It has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments but also makes a really moving point about how people's lives are erased and flattened through the retelling of history. I'm not sure a lot of people liked this movie as much as I did, so your mileage may very, but I really loved it.
Amazon Prime
The Donald Strachey Mysteries: This is actually a series of four movies that all follow various episodes in the life of Donald Strachey, a gay private eye. Based on a series of books which began being published in the late 70s. These movies have the feel of a fun low-budget made-for-tv mystery, so if you enjoy that kind of thing, you'll love these movies. In order they're: Third Man Out; Shock to the System; On the Other Hand, Death; Ice Blues
Uncle Frank (2020): A moving family drama set in the 70s about a gay man returning home for his father's funeral. Has a lot of dark moments, but a happy ending, and a really sweet gay couple at the center.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020): Extremely fun gay Bollywood romcom about a man and his boyfriend going to his parents house for his cousin's wedding. I really can't recommend this one enough.
HBO Max
Unpregnant (2020): I've watched a lot of gay bro comedies and this one is by far my favorite. It's like Booksmart if Booksmart was good. It's about two teenage girls going on a cross-country road trip so that one of them can get an abortion. They get in a lot of zany hijinks along the way. Please watch it.
Desert Hearts (1985): Essentially a classic lesbian pulp novel but with a happy ending. One of the earliest mainstream movies to be both openly gay and have a happy (if a bit ambiguous) ending. Plus it's just a genuinely compelling story with some good characters.
Tubi TV
Keep in mind Tubi is 100% free even without a subscription and it has a huge LGBT section so it's a great resource for gay films! It's movies aren't really sorted in any sort of order, though, so it can be a bit daunting to try to find anything on there if you don't already have something in mind.
That said, here's some diamonds in the rough I've already dug out for you:
Ideal Home (2018): This movie stars Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan as a rich asshole gay couple who unexpectedly have to adopt a child. It's very sort of mean-spirited humor for a lot of it but also it's got a surprising amount of heart at it's center and... it's one of my main comfort movies at this point lmao.
An Almost Ordinary Summer (2019): A movie about two older Italian men getting married. Their families are opposed at first and most of the film is focused on winning them over. Also one of my main comfort movies lol
Big Eden (2000): A really sweet gay romcom about a New York artist going back to his hometown in Montana and finding love and community there.
If you're willing to pay for stuff
Unfortunately not all of my favorite movies are currently streaming anywhere, but if you're willing/able to pay to rent or buy good movies, I recommend these ones:
Nina's Heavenly Delights (2006): A delightful lesbian romcom about a woman who returns to her home in Scotland for her father's funeral and ends up trying to win a curry cooking contest to keep her family's restaurant alive. I watched this movie on my first virtual date with my now girlfriend, and she said it was her best first date ever, so... <3
Shelter (2007): Gay surfer film. Also a lot about family and self-acceptance and learning to find a healthy balance between taking care of yourself and being there for others. Great soundtrack. Beautiful cinematography. Once when I was having a hard time I watched this movie every night for like a week straight.
Four More Years (2010): An absolutely hilarious Swedish gay romcom about two politicians from opposing parties falling in love. Another one about older gays (which I always appreciate) and it's one of the most genuinely funny gay romcoms out there.
Okay, I'll put a stop to it there. But if you want to send me any follow-up recommendation requests with more specifics about what kind of movies you want to watch I'm always happy to try to give more personalized recommendations as well. Also feel free to let me know if you have any follow-up questions about any of the movies featured here.

There actually are some great gay-themed movies out there.
(Note: When this was originally posted I failed to include a few other really great titles: The Donald Strachey series of gay mysteries, Save Me, The Next Best Thing, Triple Crossed, GBF, Geography Club, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Hawaii, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Edge of Seventeen are all worthy of mention.)
Seen most of these but happy this list exists so I can see more

THE relatable™ moment in Donald Strachey movies: is when in Ice Blues Timothy pretends to be a pizza delivery boy, and the entire corporate office abandons their stations in pursuit of free grub.

I think it’s going to transpire that Callum had a lover in the army, which is why the army is portrayed as traumatic for him. He snapped at Tiffany for wearing a hat from the army he had amongst his personal belongings. And there are upcoming scenes of him attending the funeral of a soldier. My guess is he may have been outed in the army, hence the trauma.
That reminds me of a movie series I have watched called Donald Strachey Mysteries. In the films they main character Donald was serving in the army during Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He met another man in his unit and they fell in love, they were found out for being romantically involved and were discharged from the army. His lover committed suicide because of the event, a guilt that had weight heavily on Donald.
I wonder if this is something similar that happen to Callum, that if he did have a lover in the army, that perhaps he died at his own hand or because of something that might have happened because of something Callum did or just in a tragic event. And the loss of his lover devastated him or perhaps he blames himself for the death and it’s a guilt that weighs heavily on Callum? Or perhaps he wanted to be with this man, but this man didn’t want to be with him? And he’s off with someone else, leaving Callum a mess, who doesn’t know what to do with himself?
Though being in the army can bring it’s own issues, especially when you go off to a war zone, which I’m guessing happen to Callum.

Kerry James Caleb Odell Heartland
Who Is Kerry James? 8 Facts About the Caleb Odell Actor on Heartland
If you are a big Heartland fan, you probably know who Kerry James is and need no explanation! For those who are newer to the Heartland universe, though, Kerry James is the actor who plays the character of Caleb Odell. He is an Irish Canadian actor who was born in Saanich, Vancouver Island, in the year 1986.
Kerry James has been a mainstay on the Heartland TV show since 2008 when he first appeared as Caleb in Season 2. This was also one of the first acting jobs he landed, which may be hard to believe because he brings so much passion and skill to his portrayal of Caleb Odell. Take a look below for some more fun facts about Kerry James, as well as about his Heartland character!

Kerry Learned to Ride on the Heartland Set
Many of the actors from the Heartland cast have had past equestrian experience or been around horses. Kerry James, however, is not one of those people. He did not come to the set with lots of experience with horses, so he attended something called “cowboy camp” on set. During cowboy camp, he was taught the basics of being a cowboy, like horse riding and roping.
Kerry feels very lucky that he was brought on without having this experience, especially because his character also did not exist in the books that the TV series is based upon! Luckily, Kerry has done a fantastic job portraying Caleb and making the character a great addition to the show.

Kerry James Found His Passion For Acting in High School
Kerry James became passionate about acting when he was a high school student. Actually, he was not a good student in high school, so he needed some extra credits to graduate and took drama to earn those credits. Luckily, he ended up loving it!
Once he graduated, he moved to Vancouver and learned acting at the Vancouver Film School, even training under his mentor, Warren Robertson, who is a well-known acting coach. He worked hard on stage and then landed his role on Heartland soon after, which was kind of his big break and one of his first roles.
Playing Caleb in Heartland Was One of Kerry James’ First Acting Jobs
Kerry James went to acting school after high school, but then was doing odd jobs and waiting tables, doing construction work, and delivering furniture while he chased his big break. You’ve probably heard a similar story countless times with other actors! It was around this time that he landed the role of Caleb Odell in Heartland.
Kerry has said many times that getting the job to play Caleb was one of the best things that could have happened to his acting career. He says it was a crash course in acting, and that he was able to learn a lot on set from the cast and crew.
Kerry James Has Also Been Acting Outside of Heartland
Heartland is not the only credit Kerry James has under his belt! Like many other actors, he has branched out to play other roles, too, during his time on Heartland– after all, playing the same role for so long can sometimes go stagnant, or an actor may feel like they are too comfortable and need to challenge themselves.
Some of the credits that Kerry has are Aliens In America, On the Other Hand, Death: A Donald Strachey Mystery, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, and Goodnight for Justice: Queen of Hearts.
Kerry James is Passionate About Writing
Once Kerry began to get more involved in the film industry and start to get the roles he was auditioning for, he started to develop a passion for screenwriting and writing scripts. He does not want to stick to acting forever– his dream is to, someday, direct a movie that he has also written the script for.
Kerry James Loves Sports and Working Out
Kerry is very athletic, and is a natural athlete– after all, he was able to come onto the Heartland set with no equestrian experience and learn the ropes quickly! In high school, he actually trained with Chris Frehlick, who is a former Olympic volleyball player. Kerry also loves to spend time outside.
When he was a teen, Kerry also played basketball and even won the BC AAA High School Boys’ Provincial Championship back in 2003. These days, Kerry is still very serious about athletics, taking care of his body, and staying in shape. You know what they say– the body is a temple! When he is not busy on set, he uses some of his downtime to work out and engage in different sports like boxing and football.
Does Kerry James Have a Wife?
Sometimes, we love our favorite celebrities so much that we are interested in what they do outside of work, too, and while they’re not on set! Seeing them on our screens in a movie or TV series makes it feel like we know them, not like they are strangers playing a character. So, you may be interested in some of the more personal details of Kerry James’ life– not the lift of the character he plays.
While Kerry James is very private, he currently does not have a wife or is not married. Some rumors say that he has had at least one serious partner previously, but as of right now, he is single.
Kerry James is on Cameo
Many of the actors from Heartland– as well as other actors and celebrities– are on Cameo. What is Cameo, you may ask? It is an online platform where celebrities will create short, personalized videos for you in exchange for a donation.
Kerry James is one of the actors that is on Cameo, so if you or a loved one is a huge fan of him or his character, this could be perfect to get you a special video– like a birthday wish or motivational speech!

Первый фильм «Третий лишний: загадки Дональда Страчи / Third Man Out: A Donald Strachey Mystery» единственный с озвучкой, но плохой озвучкой. Лёгкий детектив с великолепными персонажами. Главные герои очень любят друг друга. Фильмы сняты по книгам (которых намного больше), но на русский язык они не переведены.
В главных ролях: Чед Аллен, Себастьян Спенс
