Harry Potter is Being Rebooted

HBO just confirmed a Harry Potter reboot in the form of a ten-year long tv show... and I hate it.

Why would you adapt something for the second time when you can do something new? Something on the Marauders, or founders, or Ilvermorny, or Tom Riddle, expand the world. It hasn't been nearly long enough to warrant a reboot. For years, Harry's story has been set and safe, now it's not anymore. I know adaptations have colored my feelings on the source material before just because I could always feel the disappointment in the back of my mind (note: Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children). I love HP, it was everything to me and fundamental in my development. It gifted me confidence and a safe place to turn to, not to mention that I’m positive it saved my life. They don't need to screw it up.

NOBODY could ever embody these characters the way the original actors did. Can you imagine anybody but Emma Watson being Hermione? Anyone except Daniel being Harry? Anybody else but Rupert being Ron? Believe me, I know the films are not perfect. Harry should have been sassier, Ginny should have been more fiery, Ron’s character shouldn’t have been reduced, Peeves, SPEW, and Winky should have all been included. But nothing is perfect, yet this is one of the best book to movie adaptations ever. It was done so well with so much love, care and talent. In this, Maggie Smith won’t be McGonagall, Alan Rickman won’t be Snape, Robbie Coltrane won’t be Hagrid, Evanna Lynch won’t be Luna, Gary Oldman won’t be Sirius, Helena Bonham Carter won’t be Bellatrix, Warwick Davis won’t be Flitwick, all of the Weasley’s from Molly to Arthur to the twins will be replaced.

Once Emma Watson said maybe in fifty years, they could do a reboot. She could play McGonagall, Daniel Snape, Tom Dumbledore. I’d be fine with that, but it’s too soon now. The younger cast is just now reaching their thirties, Daniel Radcliffe is just now having a child of his own. It’s too soon.

And to those who are saying “just don’t watch it.” This will affect the fandom. The characterizations, the parks, the tours, the look/feel of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade and everything else. It’s all going to be reimagined. This is nothing more than a cash grab from an already incredibly profitable franchise. As in, the third most profitable behind only Marvel and Star Wars.

The Wizarding World is always ready to be expanded. But Harry Potter, the characters, the world at that period in time, that feeling of home we get when we look at the set story, does not need a reboot.

This fandom should be a safe space for queer and trans folks, and by supporting/promoting that stupid fucking reboot you are actively endangering that.

And yes, posting, reblogging, and claiming that you wish the show was about another era (i.e. the marauders era/the founders era) falls under supporting and promoting.

DON’T FUCKING DO IT!

Maybe in 20 or 40 years to introduce a new generation to the Wizarding World you can do this. But it hasn’t been long enough to warrant it. This is nothing but a cheap cash grab that they know will get viewers in, even though they could be doing something we’ve been begging to see for years like a Marauders Show or one about the Hogwarts Founders. We don’t want this! Don’t touch this. I will never say the HP movies are perfect. Peeves being left out was a crime, Harry should have been sassier, Ron should have been more like his bookish counterpart, but they were still good. Do you know how rare it is that a book to movie adaptation comes out and its actually good? SO RARE! Harry Potter is still very much in the public eye; it doesn’t need to be messed with when you’re still making billions off of it.

so there was a leaked script of some fight between winx and trix. no details, but, winx saying their spells out loud. TRIX DON'T DO THAT. THEY CAST SPELLS WITHOUT WORDS. LIKE, THERE'S DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTION, BUT NO WORDS FROM THEM.

Like, in canon series (i mean 3 first seasons and the films) i feel like Icy said the least spells out of all trix and winx. She casts 80% of her magic without saying anything and I LOVE THIS because SHE'S SO COOL THAT SHE DOESN'T NEED TO SAY SPELLS OUT LOUD. That's like in harry potter, if you can cast spells without saying anything, that means that you are really good at magic, and i want to think that the same applies to winx club, because that makes sense!!!!

I wanna make a video where i count every spell casted by winx&trix verbally and non-verbally (my maximum tho only said 3 seasons... i don't know if i'll ever be able to re-watch that half of s5 ive seen and watch the rest of it and further seasons... or at least i need moral support for it)

i think The Powers That Be (the big media) are failing to understand that not everything has to be a franchise. not every n years old piece of media needs a reboot, or a version in a different medium, a sequel or a prequel or a midquel, or a live action version.

and i think that we're seeing this at it's worst right now with things like the minecraft movie that is lacking soul enough that it makes our animal brains shriek and recoil because the uncanny valley sense lights up - but not in an 'it's a mask or a doll that's close to realistic but not close enough' way but in an 'oh my god, this is a corpse' way. it's shaped like something you love but doesn't act like it, doesn't move like it, doesn't feel like it. the main component of what made it it is missing. it's entirely money-motivated and we can tell just by looking at it, it's like a zombie.

it just kinda feels like we're mid-stagnation of culture. original stuff just isn't being made as much anymore because it's seen as "risky" by the industry. and there isn't even any experimentation going on, just adding on things or getting rid of stuff, and the goal of all this is to make the final product more Digestible, but the side-effect is just this blandness. you're adding water and taking away the seasoning because what if it's too salty for some people, what if it's too spicy because some are more sensitive to that than others, and you end up with a vaguely tasteless sludge. nothing is gained. there's just a ghost of an aftertaste.

and the executives that mainly decide on all this want to continue doing this so much, and for the audience to be like little money-generating sheep blindly watching the same thing over and over again. but unlike sheep, we cannot regurgitate the same thing ad infinitum. we don't have the stomach for it. there's no substance and, arguably, no art in all this.

eisner was kinda onto something when he said that to make money it's necessary to make history and art, and some kind of a statement but it kinda feels like they're trying to skip this step, just keep serving us the same thing. but even the most delicious food, given enough time, gets old and boring, grows stale, and, eventually, goes bad and spoils.

i think that all that is additionally sad because it will inevitably lead to the current media cannibalizing themselves. they're already reaching for laughably young cultural texts like moana and harry potter. what will they do once they catch up to the point of history we're at right now?

Can I just say this part of the casting call for the new golden trio of the Harry Potter reboot is fucking hilarious as shit for so many reasons???? For starting orders, JKR with diverse characters??? The jokes write themselves, really, because the same woman who had characters defend elf's being slaves to someone trying to free them and the same woman who can't even google Asian names and named a black character Kingsley Shacklebolt, being diverse in a reboot??? Let alone the same woman who wrote werewolf's as being a representation for AIDs and claimed a character who had been dead for a while by that point was gay the whole time but had chosen to stop being gay or at least never love someone else because his one love had been a villain being fine with new actors having sexualities that aren't straight??? And I cannot even recall if we had ANY character in the books who was disabled, so like, uh, I'm scared how JKR will tackle this one, and its not mentioned but religion is among those protected by law with casting and just, given JKR had every single character celebrate Christmas and confirmed only ONE Jewish student attended Hogwarts...yeah no.

Yes, I googled it, I fucking re-read Lolita in preparation for this prompt because google said it was the best example of an unreliable narrator blah blah blah and I still don't get it. One answer that google also gave me was "an unreliable narrator can be defined as any narrator who misleads readers, either deliberately or unwittingly." ??? Listen bestie, I am constantly mislead and bamboozled by everything I ever read?? I feel that this fic deals with mental health issues and ptsd in a very realistic way at least to me, hits pretty close to home. One comment said "It's good to realize that a person can make you better, but cannot heal you." and this is so fucking true.

For the love of all good, if there is one fic you read this week, this month, this year, make sure it's this one. This is undoubtedly the funniest thing I've read in a while, it's so so so good. The world building is subtle but rich, the characterization is unbelievable, I love the unhinged ghosts of the story. Again, run, don't walk. I love this.

I wanna say something for those of you out here defending streaming services in the case of The Edge of Sleep.

No. We dont know anything for sure. We dont know specifically what's happening and Mark legally cant tell us more than likely. But why are you defending streaming services?

You're out here saying for all we know its not their fault Mark is getting screwed over by lack of advertising, refusal to allow him to say what streaming service his show will be on, and dropping the show early without saying anything.

If im correct the first couple of months of a shows traffic and streams is the most important.

But why would you want to back streaming services? These companies, their CEOs make BILLIONS every year. They are constantly cancelling original shows, shows made by queer people and people of color, or starring queer people and people of color. They spend money in excess making spin off and reboots of the big names like Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. And they continue to cancel things my small creators. They continue to cancel orignal content, or in the cases of some streaming services, make shows and movies and lock them in a vault and write them off for tax credits.

No, not all streaning services are the same. But I wouldn't put it past a streaming service EVER to tell a creator that they're cancelling or won't renew or won't add their new creation to their service just because "the numbers werent there" or the show is "too violent." Why would you actively WANT to defend streaming services?

Why do you want to defend people who get rid of art? People who won't put out physical media of certain shows. People who make you pay a constant monthly fee (forcing you to pay more if you don't want ads) only for them to be in control of what titles you can and cant watch. They can pull shows and movies at any time and even though you pay for the service you can't do anything about it.

I remember a time that when you paid for something, it was yours. A one time payment and you own it and you can watch it as many times you want for as long as you want WHENEVER you want.

So what you enjoy shows because theyre entertaining and they give you a quick fix of something to binge? Don't you miss storylines and character development and plot?

I think we need to take a look at why we're defending streaming services when they do so little for us and for original content.

Yes. Watch the edge of sleep, support mark. Get the show trending, generate traffic and views, but at the end of it all if youre defending a random billionaire who only sees you as another dollar sign for refusing to help a creator and instead placing a road block in the way? I think you need to take into consideration if you just want to get quick entertainment or if you actually care about people's art.
