Way back when I got back into giffing after a year of lurking in the BL fandom I needed a new url. I don't like using urls that are too obviously fandom-related (I don't mind them on other blogs at all!) but I did like Pha from Gen Y so I saw an opportunity and took it. I know that thankfully people who send you asks here are pretty much always willing to discuss the things the show did wrong, but have you ever tried to talk about your feelings towards the shitty writing (or should I just say shitty WRITER?) to someone who prefers to only see/remember the ~good things- about the show? I feel so silenced whenever I try to talk about shitty writing in this other fandom I’m in… some people make sure to warn me from the start they like to talk about the good things only and pretend the bad didn’t happen and I’m like,,, I’m really grateful about everything this show made me feel, I love parts of it so very much—so passionately—that I can’t ignore how they screwed my favorite characters over for nothing. It’s really frustrating and I just felt like asking if you ever felt like that at some point and tell you to please never stop pointing out how THE OC’s writers could have treated their precious iconic characters so, so much better! X

It's a nice community over here, and I think it helps that it's always been a safe space for Marissa fans which the larger fandom spaces (in my experience) are not. And this has been true for 20 years. I think often about the Mischa/Marissa girlies who were bullied off of TWoP and made their own sites. And the other actors had fansites too fwiw, but TWoP was very toxic for Marissa/Mischa defenders in particular.

I have always been and am still personally pretty diligent in how I engage with this show so no one I ever talk to is like "What are you talking about? It's a family show and everything was rainbows". Like, people are perfectly entitled to that feeling and TPTB still try to peddle that stuff, but I think this blog attracts more people who are like "Damn, that was shitty, I hate how they ruined that thing I loved" which is like my entire blog's ethos lol. So I am purposefully insulated, which helps. Making my answer to your question a simple no. I don't talk to people like that, and haven't tried to since I was a teenager in the 2010s. Back then I was on FanForum and still mostly kept to Marissa/RM threads, so I was insulating my fandom experience even back then.

But I can get really in my own head about feeling negative thoughts about this stuff sometimes, and can be triggered by random things when my mental health is already suffering. And this show in particular can be really draining when I let it drain me. I wish it wasn't the case! But hyperfixations be hyperfixating, I guess. It helps massively, massively to be able to talk to a fandom friend about it. Like it makes a world of difference, truly. One of my besties I talk to daily is someone I met on here who was an OG Marissa fan and has helped me just fucking vent when I need to vent. I would never go onto the sub and be like "this show sucks, and anyone who hates Marissa and thinks she deserved bad things also sucks and hates women" but that's not to say I don't actually feel that way, lmao.

Hi, I am a baby ARMY and I would like to ask a quick question (love your blog and your answers to asks, I feel like I learn something new with every post (also new to tumblr and I love it so far!))? I have never really joined a fandom before so this was like reading a book to me almost. Everything is sparkles and rainbows until you read what is actually being said in subtext. Then you learn that everything is kinda poop because that's just life lol. However, I still love it and I have learned to just block certain things and people and move on. Saves me a lot of time and stress. Your post about the JK and JM ad really did open my eyes because I thought people, specifically Kookminers, were being ridiculous. Little did I know that I, myself, was being ridiculous. I did not take SK culture into the equation at all and I truly regret that now and will try to do better in the future. International ARMYs bother me when they try to claim something is wrong and/or state something as fact when they have done little to no research into the SK culture (I will learn from these mistakes and try my best to do better). Well, before I get even more distracted, my question is why do International ARMYs make such a big deal out of skinship (when I first started watching BTS content, I knew that it had to be normal in SK to do casual affection or sometimes more with friends, which is actually really sweet)? Shippers use it to prove their ship is "real" and I just don't get it (I have seen this done with some other kpop groups I recently got into)? They even take these moments out of context, which is weird if you have watched original content. So, what's the big deal?

Let's talk about skinship. Skinship is not what makes a ship sink or swim. It is super common to be touchy and casual with close friends. International fans sometimes struggle with what's friendly and whats more than when it comes to skinship simply because it is not the norm for us. It is even less in the norm for us to see these causal touches between men. If you saw two women snuggled up on the couch together, you wouldn't have a hard time accepting they are only friends. But seeing two men do the same thing and people feel like they would only do that if they are romantically involved. Men need more platonic affection, seriously.

It would be normal to see 2 men who are good friends holding hands walking down the street. Hugs and head kisses are also the norm. Feeding each other, hugs, cuddles all normal between good friends and people you care about/trust. International fans blow it out of proportion because they are used it and don't take the culture into consideration. Just like the fansite anniversary ads that you mentioned. So what's the big deal with the skinship? There isn't. Unless you count that it showcases how cute, lovable and sweet all their bonds are together, because that is definitely true!

BTS is even closer than your normal "close friends." I've said it a lot and I'll continue to say it often. BTS have some weird boundaries with each other, meaning they really don't have any. Lmao. I think part of that stems from how tightly packed into a one bed one bath dorm they were for such a long time. Sleeping, showering, eating, going to the bathroom all literally on top of each other and sometimes with each other when short on time... well that bonds you in ways other people probably couldn't ever really understand. So their skinship gets even more "next level" at times without it changing from platonic levels.

Context and intention is super important in understanding if skinship is platonic or romantic in nature. You can have a friend slap your ass, call you hot as all hell, kiss your forehand, rub your thigh and tuck you under their arm for cuddles, and it be nothing but platonic. And honestly, I swear BTS, especially Jungkook, have a secret love language of ass slapping. Its constant with them!

There definitely is a difference though with context and intention in how BTS touch each with normal skinship and say (we all knew this was coming, you know who I think are more than just platonic in bts) how Jungkookie will sometimes melt when Jimin touches him. Or say how flustered Jikook make each other with simple touches. Context and intention. For example, normal skin skip, a sweet YoonMin back hug:

And then we have Jikook, same type of hug, same moment of resting their head on the person they are hugging. The vibe though? Totally different. The context and intention, not the same. It feels *different*:

Its not a competition or really a comparison. They are all special and beautiful moments between every single one of them. But when you look at skinship, its important to make sure you recognize what you are seeing within the norms of the Korean Culture and not through a western gaze. BTS are all overly touchy and all over each other. Its important to not base a "ship" just on skinship. I think Jikook are more than platonic because of many many reasons, which I have talked about before in my Vminkook Dynamics part 3 post. Most of which is the exclusivity and uniqueness they have to their bond and how they seek each other out all the time. The skinship can play into it, but its also so much more than that.
