Idk if someone has asked you before but, i am very likely to have DID/OADD-1b, have anxiety and depresive symptoms and CPTSD, now, i was thinking about getting a service dog for this but idk a) how to start and b) what to theach the dog/what might be useful for me

Hey anon! I’d love to shed what light I can on this. 

Here’s a great list of psychiatric service dog tasks, so I’d definitely recommend looking through that to get an idea of what to teach and what will be useful. 

Tasks are trained after obedience work, while you’re starting to practice that obedience work in public until your dog is solidly able to listen to commands in pretty much any situation. 

If you don’t have dog training experience to an advanced level, I’d highly recommend working with a skilled trainer. There’s a lot that goes into the two years of service dog training, and it can be a tough journey mentally too. A trainer is really helpful! Even group training classes can be a big help, just let the instructors know your dog is a service dog in training so they can modify the class to fit their needs.

Also some DID/OSDD-1b specific tasks that may not be listed in the above link could be:

Guiding home during a fugue episode (when you or an alter doesn’t know where you are)

Intentionally disobeying a command to cross a street if a car is coming (helps when dissociation lowers awareness)

Alerting to switches in identity/alters

Providing tactile stimulation to calm a child alter, until an older alter can take over and front

Here’s how to start getting a service dog:

There’s two paths. One is going through a program and one is owner-training (if you’re in the US, at least, though many other countries also allow owner training). 

Programs are great because you can get a fully trained dog without having to do any of the teaching. But, psych dogs are rare and often quite expensive (the lowest I’ve found through a program is $9000, even though they’re non-profit). They can be upwards of $30,000. 

Also, it’s common to have programs (whether they cost money or not) to take several years. They also receive hundreds or thousands of applications a year, and only train a couple dozen dogs--so they’re hard to get accepted into. Even more when you have misunderstood disorders like DID or OSDD. 

So, owner training is the other route! Basically, you get a puppy (or older dog, but well bred puppies are your best bet) and train them for public obedience. Here’s the basic path to a service dog:

Intensive and positive socialization: From day 1 you want the breeder to start neurologically socializing your dog, and you want to continue positive socialization from the first day you have your pup. This is essential--an under-socialized dog will almost certainly wash or require expensive behavioral rehab. Socialization never really ends, but it’s the most critical in the first 4 months of your pup’s life and during fear periods (keeping them positive). 

Basic obedience: Getting them used to listening to you, bonding, and teaching basic commands. Use positive reinforcement only before 8 months. After that, you can move to a more balanced practice with corrections if needed. 

Public obedience: Start working on proofing that obedience in public. You can use the public access test as a guideline of what to focus on training. Basically, your dog needs to be under your control at all times--so you want to work up to that. Remember, you have at least two years before you can even start to expect a great trained dog (that’s the minimum time for maturity), so don’t get discouraged! Tali, our pup, is a year and two months and still doesn’t heel properly in public and loves saying hi to people. 

Begin psych task training no earlier than 18 months. Psych tasks can be emotionally intense for a pup, so you don’t want them to end up stressed by starting this too early. Some dogs can handle this training earlier, but it’s definitely a risk for them to wash/not work out in the future. Other tasks, like medical alert, can be trained at any time. Just don’t force your dog to learn too much too fast! (Mobility tasks also can’t start before 18 months, not with actually bearing weight at least--since their growth plates need to solidify first)

I’d definitely recommend getting familiar with the principles of dog training through blogs, videos, and books before venturing into this. Also, keep in mind that training a service dog will likely take a toll on your mental health before they help--Tali’s exhausted us, stressed us, and definitely added a toll on. So, make sure you can handle 2 years of basically raising another living being, including financial stress.

There is a big gap between the size of the Pomeranian and Husky. While the size may be important for some people, there really is a sure way to know what size you'll get when you mix the two. However, Pomsky adults have been known to range from 10 to 15 inches and weigh about 17 to 30 pounds. The Pomsky seems to take on the physical features of its parent Husky. Having a well-polished coat is soft, silky and elegant designed with a mix of color (usually white, black and gray). According to those authorities, to be recognized as a new breed, the Pomsky must be a descendant of 3 different breeds of dogs. However, the Pomsky is a hybrid, but a combination of only two breeds. If you are a hardcore pure breeder and lover of dogs, this is probably something to keep in mind.

 Hair Shedding

Pomsky seem to shed a lot of hair, in fact, for about 3 months and twice a year. I know what you are thinking, but do not worry about whether they will go completely bald all over or if they will look patchy. The Pomsky naturally have a lot of hair, so in their shedding period, it may seem like too much are coming out but do not get alarmed. You can imagine it will call for a bit of cleaning, but don’t let that discourage you from grooming or brushing. Plus, they are still pretty darn cute.

 Nature

These little guys are packed full of energy and playfulness, which means they require a lot of careful attention. You do not want to leave them idle. It’s like the saying goes, “the devil makes use of idle hands”. However, be wary not to overly ‘baby them’, so to speak, because they can definitely take your kindness for weakness.

 Their Pomeranian parent usually fall victim to something called Small Dog Syndrome. This is where the dog is believes that it is superior to its human owners. Let’s be honest. If you have a dog, or any pet that is short and too cute for words, you treat them like royalty. You give them anything they want, you cater to their appetite and preferred foods and you pretty much pamper them more than yourself most times. The problem with this is that these dogs are very proud, so do that fuels their egos and make them act out. The Pomsky is very likely to adapt this trait.

 Possible Health Issues

No creation is without fault. That universal fact holds true even with the Pomsky. Both the Pomeranian and Siberian Husky have their fair share of issues, which are likely to be passed on to the Pomsky (though not necessarily definite).

 From their Husky parent’s side, they may be susceptible to hip dysplasia, ectopy (displacement of the urethra), eye issues like cataracts, or even skin issues like zinc responsive dermatitis. On the other hand, from their Pomeranian parent lineage, Pomskies may be prone to dislocated patella (kneecap), slipped stifle, heart problems, eye infections, skin irritations and tooth decay and early loss.

 Another thing worth considering when looking at possible health issues is whether Pomsky breeders are doing Pomsky to Pomsky breeding. In that case the Pomsky’s generation will matter. It is recommended that Pomsky to Pomsky breeding only happen after multiple generations in, because there is a real chance of a throwback puppy. Basically, a throwback puppy could be husky sized and the birth would be too much for its Pomsky mother and therefore cause her to die.

So when considering them, it will do you a great deal of good to inquire if the breeder if the parents used had any health issues. Researching is crucial, because you never know what you will get and you do not want to waste your money and time.

As adorable as this is, these dogs are the reason “designer breeds” are a big thing now and puppy mills are rampant across the United States.

Please do your research when purchasing a puppy and look for the following:

- How many litters does your breeder have? A good breeder will NOT breed a dog on every heat cycle. This is unhealthy and downright dangerous, not to mention extremely cruel to the female dogs.

- Will your breeder allow you to come to their home and meet the family/dogs and puppies? Puppy mills are disgusting, smelly, unsanitary buildings full of cages that are never cleaned. Insist on visiting your new puppy at the breeder’s home in the environment it’s raised in. If they put up a fight, DO NOT PURCHASE.

- Does your breeder have the puppies vetted and insured for any health conditions? Do your research. All breeds have certain health conditions they are more susceptible to. Shepherds get hip dysplasia. Goldens get cancer. Good breeders have their breeding dogs certified against health conditions and bring their pups to an actual vet instead of buying vaccines at a farm supply store. *THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT FARM SUPPLY STORE VACCINES ARE LEGITIMATE* The veterinary world is full of counterfeit products! This goes for everything, from vaccines all the way down to flea and tick products. Legitimate companies do NOT sell to companies like Amazon, Costco, or Walmart. You are getting mock products made overseas when you buy from these retailers. Go to the Merial or Elanco or any other pet distributor website and they will tell you the same thing. When you are buying from your vet, you are buying quality. YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

- Does your breeder keep you up to date with puppy growth pictures, emails, etc as they are growing until it’s time for you to take them home? Good breeders are EXCITED about the people they choose to have a puppy go to. They want to know they’ve picked a good home, and they want YOU to be excited for your new arrival! Don’t be afraid to contact your breeder with any questions, requests for pictures, or concerns while you wait for your new puppy! Of course, your breeder is human and probably has a busy life so cut them some slack, but if emails go unanswered, and calls are avoided, back out FAST. Your breeder should know how each and every client matters!

It should be said that you can get just as cute, sweet, and healthy of a puppy at a shelter. Hundreds of thousands of dogs are abandoned or born on the streets every year, and the only way to help the pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter your existing pets, and to encourage adoption. Or, maybe you’ve been there, done that with puppy training. It’s ok if you never want to do that again! Maybe an older, less hyper dog is the better match for you. There are countless numbers of adorable, loving dogs lust waiting for the perfect home.

No one should be shamed for their choice in how to purchase a dog. But if you’re going to get a puppy, *please,* do your research and do your part to discourage puppy mills all over the country. They’re inhumane torture factories that just breed unhealthy, inbred dogs that continue to pass unhealthy genes into the population. And of course, have any pet you get spayed or neutered.

We finally took the first step: we got our own puppy! "My first dog (and best friend) was Rex, a sweet, playful pup. I knew it would be labor intensive and a big obligation, but that “holy crap” feeling I had when I first picked him up was just a subtle hum of the screaming siren of uneasiness I’ve come to know a few moments after.

When we prepared his crate for him, my son tied his leash to the leg of a chair, he did not like it to sit still and tried to get up and run towards a ball or something, and the next thing TERRIFIED to find that the chair was CHASING HIM:)

Anyway, I’ve learned some things and also managed to put together a few important points to take note of….

If you are thinking of bringing a puppy into your home, you may have encountered these questions: how old should a puppy be when you pick it up and what will you do with it before it receives all vaccines against infectious diseases?

If you are buying a dog, do not take it before it is 8 weeks old

For starters, as a partial answer to the first question, clearly and loudly: if you are buying a dog, don’t let the breeder (in this case it should be written in quotes) force you to take the puppy home before he is 8 weeks old. And don't be fooled, so in the desire to get cheaper, take the dog from someone who just "punches" the dog and does not care at all about the welfare of these animals.

The calculation is very clear here:

When they are 4-5 weeks old, puppies become much more physically and financially demanding, so a person who sells dogs just for the sake of making money then eventually wants to get rid of increasingly demanding puppies.

However, puppies that are prematurely separated from their mother and the rest of the litter, as adult dogs, show much more (serious) behavioral problems than puppies that remain with their mother and siblings for at least 8 weeks and in a crucial period of socialization seen lasts up to 4 months of age) were properly socialized . This is shown by many researches conducted at world scientific institutions.

What if you decide to adopt an abandoned or discarded puppy?

If you have decided to adopt a dog from a shelter or save a puppy found abandoned and thrown on the road, it is a very commendable gesture and you should not be discouraged by not knowing how this puppy spent the earliest months of life, but you should definitely leave as soon as possible to some organized form of dog training (for example to some quality individual or group course).

Don't wait for a "suitable" moment because the right moment is exactly when you brought the dog home. The longer you wait, even if there are no behavioral problems at first, the harder it will be to solve the problems once they arise.

And what about vaccines?

You’ve probably heard from someone before (probably your vet) that a puppy should be in isolation from other dogs and the outside world until it receives all the vaccines against infectious canine diseases (i.e., by about 4-5 months of age).

You definitely need to be careful where you take your puppy, but it is by no means good to keep him in isolation from all living beings, all experiences and stimuli. Infectious canine diseases are often deadly and unfortunately are very common in some areas. But keep this in mind: your puppy will not receive all the vaccines until he is about 4 months old. If you wait until then, the opportunity to socialize your dog properly will already be missed.

And not only that: according to the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior (AVSAB), behavioral problems, not contagious canine diseases, are the leading cause of death in dogs under 3 years of age ! (This refers to the fact that in the U.S., more dogs are killed each year due to behavioral problems than are killed by infectious canine diseases). The same veterinary society recommends that dogs be introduced to new places, people and other dogs before receiving all vaccines against infectious canine diseases (ie, puppy owners are advised not to keep puppies in isolation from the outside world while receiving these vaccines).

What does all this actually mean for puppy owners?

It means you need to be careful where you take your puppy before he receives all the vaccines, but not that you need to keep him locked up in the house. For example, going to dog parks, pet stores, and other places where a lot of dogs come that we don’t know if they’re vaccinated and if they’re healthy is not a good idea. This is sort of hard to answer because it would really depend on the person, the dog, what’s going on, and the contract. No court is going to uphold a contract that says you have to feed a certain food or else the dog gets taken away. Small claims court tends to go by whether there’s actually a welfare issue or legal issue and if neither are true there’s usually some sort of small payment agreement and that’s that. Usually the court rules in favor of the person who actually has the dog in their possession for things like this, so reclaiming the dog legally is next to impossible as long as welfare needs are met.
