One of my Dr. Gaster theories is that the Gaster Followers (plus Sans and Papyrus) were all Gasters attempts at making artificial souls. With none of them being quite what he was looking for but a monsters nonetheless. This also heavily makes sense to me since the number associated with Gaster is six.

Side note: A personal head cannon that I’ve added to this theory is that Gaster views each of his creations as his children, so that does imply that Sans and Papyrus have four other siblings.
