Chapter 1

Settling down

On their return to Sennen, they decided to stay until the end of October which would give Kerry time to make plans for the cottage. Then they would return, either at Christmas or New Years, to see her sister and her family.

Day to day, life living together was comfortable - they each found the other easy to live with and she was relieved to find that he was a tidy person and didn’t expect her to do all the heavy lifting on domestic tasks which had been a bone of contention with her ex. She did do most of the cooking though as that wasn’t his forte, however he had taught himself a little during his time in lockdown and also in Cornwall given you can’t eat out so easily there as in LA. His forte was definitely sandwiches for lunchtimes - he could wax lyrical about sandwich choices and creation and he could rustle up a couple of pasta dishes his sister had taught him as well as cook a mean steak.

They had a chat about pet peeves to try and head off issues, from the possibly trivial (like no coming in for a pee while I’m in the bath (they had 2 toilets in the house after all) to getting a cleaner and then more fundamental issues like phone privacy, honesty, not sleeping on an argument and so on.

After a couple of weeks, she commented that living together felt good and easy and she admitted how nervous she’d been, after Tresco, that they would be brought back to reality with a bump with the day to day of living together. He warned her it might not be so great when he’s filming.

“I can get a bit obsessive, reclusive. You’ll have to call me on it if I neglect you but I will try not to turn in on myself. But I also used to take on projects more I think to fill my life, I feel now I should get even more picky, now that there’s something, well someone else worth spending time on!”

Kerry had already given up waitressing due to the writing needing more time, so they often split their time between Cornwall and London where he could take meetings and do PR or press if needed while there and she would see her agent and publisher. They established a rhythm of 4 days working and 3 off for leisure and trips back in Cornwall or elsewhere. She took him to Lords to see a cricket test match, laughing as she tried to explain the intricacies of the game. Being a sports guy, he enjoyed it despite the occasional confusion at what was going on!

Another trip was to Oxford, where he’d discovered she studied at university. Their early lives had never come up in conversation til one evening they were watching an old episode of “Inspector Morse” which she said she loved.

“Reminds me of student days”

“Huh? You studied …… there?”

“Yup” she grinned at his amazement. “Don’t you think I’m clever enough?!” her eyes sparkled with mischief.

“No, god, no I mean yes!” he garbled “it’s not that, it’s just wouldn’t that be, you know like one of your highlights you drop in, you know, to impress!”

She giggled.

“Well I guess it wasn’t like that with us was it? Neither of us was trying to impress, and educational or other achievements never came up otherwise you’d have been telling me about all the A list directors who’ve chased you to work with them or how many millions you’ve made or how you were the internet’s boyfriend!”

“Stop, stop, ok, you know all that stuff?”

She nodded yes. “You only have to read one or two decent articles to get all that info you know!”

“OK but anyway back to you, so wow, Oxford!”

She told him how she’d studied English at St Catherine’s, one of the modern colleges (well, one that was built in the 1960s not the 1560’s!) and it favoured a more state school intake than the likes of Christchurch or Magdalen where old Etonians gravitated.

“But I still got to go to tutorials in the dreaming spires parts so it was a wonderful experience. We should go, on the way back from London next week. I’ll give you the tour.”

They fitted in a visit, staying at the Randolph Hotel as a treat for Kerry. She explained to him that it was always there that the well-to-do murderers in Morse episodes had stayed and it was totally central in the city too. He donned a beanie and shades to try and keep a little anonymity as they strolled around the city and she used her alumni card to get free access to some of the splendid college gardens.

There was some publicity while they were there due to fans spotting him in a pub where he’d taken his beanie and sunglasses off while they sat to eat. A small crowd had gathered as they’d left and at first it was fine, just taking selfies but when Kerry got jostled by an overzealous fan, Keanu nearly lost it, starting to drag her away but she stopped him.

“Look, don’t punish the nice guys for that one idiot. Leave her out but I’ll just go sit out of the way for a sec while you do your thing”

“You sure?” She nodded and he went back to the gathered fans, taking selfies for about 15 minutes. The rude fan stalked off when he pointedly ignored her.

“Phew that was a bit intense,” she said afterwards. It’s like news of your presence spread like wildfire!”

“Yeah took me a little off guard too. I mean usually, it only happens in airports or hotels when people get wind you are there due to an event, not so much day to day, at least not a crowd like that. Look try not to worry.” he reassured. Fortunately, the rest of their stay there passed without incident.

He’d already told Cheryl that he and Kerry were now an item and warned Kerry that at some point there might be pictures in the press and some intrusion. After that incident, she also talked to her literary agent and publishers - they were pleased, only saying the attention could be positive for her book but she hoped it wouldn’t distract or appear like she was using him. After all, she’d been pursuing her writing long before she even met him.

Before they left the UK, they made a visit to see her sister and her partner and kids. Kerry loved to see how well he got on with her brother-in-law and niece and nephew and how readily they just accepted him as her partner. But her sister couldn’t help but be worried about her younger sibling. In a quiet moment in the kitchen over breakfast, she said

“I can see he loves you, god those puppy dog eyes gazing at you last night - how do you get anything done?! But I do worry about you going away to America for long spells. Won’t you be horribly isolated, lonely even?”

“I’ll be fine” she reassured “I’ll still have my writing to do and Scout, and we have each other. It will take some getting used to, sure, but it’s just a change of location really. It’s not like I see my friends that often anyway in person. Cornwall might as well be LA if you think about how unwilling most people have been to visit me since I moved!”

Electricity market could get drastic shake-up in bid to cut energy bills and boost UK security

The Government has launched a major review into how Britain’s electricity market design could be reformed to improve energy security and cut electricity costs for consumers.

Proposals include introducing incentives for consumers to maximise energy use at times when renewable energy is cheap and abundant, instead of at times of high demand on the electricity grid when costs are high and power is more likely to be generated from coal and gas with higher cost and high carbon impact.

Other suggestions include varying prices according to households’ proximity to where the power is being generated. Such an idea could mean homes and factories being built in Scotland or coastal parts of the North where offshore wind proliferates benefit from cheaper electricity.

It may also incentivise communities to approve onshore energy schemes.

Varying prices according to assets is one of the options outlined in the review, alongside proposals that could see households benefit if they shift their consumption outside of peak hours.

It is also seeking ways to reform the UK capacity market to spur the rollout of low-carbon flexible technologies, such as electricity storage systems, that promote a cleaner and lower-cost national grid.

Ministers billed the move as the biggest energy market reform in a generation for the UK.

It follows energy bills for the average household jumping by 54 per cent to a record £1,971 in April as natural gas prices surge following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Prices are set to rise further this year, with experts at Cornwall Insight predicting this month that average bills could leap to £3,245 in October and then further to £3,364 at the start of next year.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said he was confident the review would boost the UK’s energy independence from foreign markets and help ramp up clean energy supplies for future generations.

“We’ve just seen the price of offshore UK wind power fall to an all-time low and gas is a shrinking portion of our electricity generating mix, so we need to explore ways of ensuring the electricity market is adapting to the times,” he said.

“That includes ensuring the cost benefits of our increasing supply of cheaper energy trickle down to consumers, but also that our system is fit for the future – especially with electricity demand set to double by 2035.”

After consulting widely, officials hope to come up with concrete proposals by the end of 2023 although some potential changes within the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements could take place as soon as the middle of next year.

Director of RenewableUK’s Future Electricity Systems, Barnaby Wharton, said: “The electricity system will go through a profound transformation over the next decade as we continue to expand our renewables capacity. It’s vital that we have a market which supports investments in new projects and infrastructure and allows consumers to get the full benefits of a low-cost, low-carbon system.

“This consultation is an important step forward in that process, and the industry will continue to work closely with Government on building the clean energy system which the UK needs to reach net zero as fast as possible”.

Adam Berman, deputy director at generating trade association, Energy UK, said the review will help ensure private investment can be channelled to deliver “clean, low-cost, domestically produced electricity.”

He added: “With the cost of energy reaching unprecedented levels, it’s right and timely that the Government reviews how to provide the most efficient market arrangements to support decarbonisation – so that it reduces bills in the long term.”

Does anyone know who Prince Edward really is? The Queen's youngest son is not the kind of man to draw attention to himself if he can help it.

So headlines in recent days mocking him as 'Air Miles Eddie' must have caused him considerable discomfort.

Unusually for him, he used a private executive jet as well as a helicopter over two days on public engagements in Dorset and the West Midlands — engagements that he could easily have carried out by road or rail.

The cost to the taxpayer was in the region of £13,000 rather than just a few hundred pounds, giving rise to accusations that he was guilty of 'a blatant abuse of public money'.

What is strange about this is that ever since he was forced to give up a commercial life as a TV producer, he has been extremely careful, as a full-time royal, to do everything by the book — so very different from his demanding brother Prince Andrew. So what has changed?

The theory among courtiers is that the Earl of Wessex fears he and his wife Sophie are in danger of being eclipsed from the excitement of the royal show. He wants to raise their profile.

Tuesday — the opening day of Royal Ascot — was the couple's 19th wedding anniversary.

But it was the glamorous Meghan who inevitably attracted all the attention.

All this came on top of those extraordinary pictures of the newest royal and the Queen in highly animated conversation as they carried out engagements together in Cheshire last week.

Sophie, of course, has been the Queen's favourite family companion for some years.

The former PR girl, now 53, rides out with the Queen at Windsor and also goes carriage driving with her father-in-law Prince Philip, whom she calls 'Papa' (just as Princess Diana did).

'She makes him laugh, which with Philip is half the battle,' says a friend.

On most Sunday afternoons they and their children Louise, 14, and James, ten, have 'five o'clock tea' with the Queen at Windsor Castle, usually in the Oak Room.

These are precious private moments, where the Queen herself pours the tea, and not even the personable Meghan is ever likely to take Sophie's place there.

But, in their official lives, Edward and Sophie, as senior royals, have never enjoyed the same kind of public affection and enthusiasm as the other members of the family.

Indeed, there are several spoof Prince Edward social media accounts which purport to share his homespun royal thoughts, such as: 'Don't you know that feeling in the morning when you are full of energy?! Nah, me neither.'

However, the real Edward, 54, is keen to be taken more seriously, especially as he is expected to be elevated from an earl to a duke and inherit his father's title, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Edward's dreams of a life away from the royal ribbon-cutting routine finally ended in 2011 when Ardent Productions, the television production company which the prince set up in 1993 with £300,000 of his own money, was dissolved.

The company's most spectacular achievement was the ignominy and very public criticism it faced in 2001 after it had a crew film on the St Andrews university campus while his nephew Prince William, newly arrived as a student, was there.

For her part, PR Sophie famously fell foul of a Sunday newspaper sting in 2001 in which she talked about the Royal Family and other prominent people to a potential 'client' who was, in fact, an undercover reporter.

She described the Queen as 'the old dear' and Cherie Blair, the then Prime Minister's wife, as 'absolutely horrid, horrid, horrid'.

She also created a memorable 'royals for hire' storm when, just three months after becoming the Countess of Wessex, she posed beside a Rover car at the Frankfurt Motor Show having secured a £250,000 contract to publicise the model.

After this, the couple had to throw in the commercial towel, and no one can say that, in subsequent years, they haven't worked hard to rehabilitate themselves.

For Edward, this would not be difficult, as he was the Queen's last child and Philip's favourite son.

In Sophie, the Queen saw her special qualities as a royal consort — ones that blended perfectly with her own quiet approach to duty.

And Sophie is very much a modern royal in the sense that she is surprisingly self-sufficient.

She does her own hair, sometimes drives herself to engagements and prefers to make her own 'briefing' notes without the help of a lady-in-waiting.

The daughter of a tyre company executive from Kent, Sophie seems to have little use for airs and graces.

It is Edward who is increasingly indignant — and has at times been furious — at the 'downgrading' of their royal status.

With Meghan's arrival, that can only be exacerbated.

For her part, Sophie has never been troubled by slipping down the official rankings. The

subsequent arrivals of two new royal duchesses — Camilla in 2005 and Kate in 2011 — meant Sophie, a mere countess, dropped down to fifth.

The arrival just last month of another duchess, Meghan, pushed her down to sixth — and in the quaint custom of royal protocol she has to curtsy to the Duchess of Sussex (and to the Duchess of Cambridge), whereas she only has to curtsy to Sophie if Prince Edward is with her.

So in what is the highly competitive world of life inside palace walls, one can perhaps understand Edward's anxieties, especially as 'the firm' moves towards his eldest brother Charles's plans for a slimmed-down monarchy.

Edward was even angrier than Prince Andrew when, together with Princess Anne, they were excluded from the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee flypast in 2012.

And yet, for Sophie, relative anonymity — one might even call it obscurity — has been a blessing.

It has meant she continues to drive the children to school in Ascot and Windsor like other school-run mums, and can have informal lunches with girlfriends, confident in the knowledge that people won't keep pointing her out.

However, friends explaining her appreciation of being able to live life as a normal family conveniently overlook the 57-room Bagshot Park, a rambling Victorian mansion which is their home in Surrey.

Though it should be pointed out that a large part of the place is office space and they occupy only about a quarter of it.

Their support staff are based in offices there, rather than in Buckingham Palace, and they have a relatively small domestic staff of a 'house manager' and an assistant, a chef, two cleaners who live out and a full-time nanny.

Sophie's father Christopher Rhys-Jones, 87, often stays with them.

Since Sophie's mother died in 2005, he has become a regular name on the guest list of the Queen, who likes him very much, and he has been touched by the friendship the royals have shown him.

He was not, however, in the Queen's Royal Ascot party this week, almost certainly because he finds such major occasions a bit stressful at his age.

In this area, at least, Prince Edward finds enormous comfort.

Not for him and Sophie the excruciating spectacle of a father-in-law in cahoots with the paparazzi, for example, or, in a toe-curling television interview, revealing the private thoughts and views of his royal son-in-law.

But then Christopher Rhys-Jones is no Thomas Markle. Like Kate's father, Michael Middleton, he has kept a discreet silence on what he has seen and heard.

So can we expect Prince Edward to become 'Air Miles Andy Mark II'?

Thus far, it must be said, Edward has carefully avoided the royal pitfalls that have characterised his elder brother's life.

Yes, he has made mistakes, but he has never pursued the company of dubious billionaires and never given cause for people to describe him as arrogant.

And unlike Andrew's daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Edward has not saddled his children with the style HRH — Louise is not a princess and James is not a prince.

'They will have to work for a living,' the Countess of Wessex has said.

So does Prince Edward really want to raise his royal profile, or is it merely a knee-jerk reaction to all the excitement and ballyhoo that has surrounded the new arrival in the family?

Oakley uses this central location to elicit feelings of suffocation, claustrophobia and banality, juxtaposed with the eeriness and wilderness of the sea, the wind and the natural habitat surrounding these stark, static structures. Here, the caravan site becomes a psychological terrain, forging a unique evocation of girlhood.

The Dardenne brothers’ Palme d’Or-winning 1999 drama Rosetta is also set within a static caravan park, this time in the Belgian town of Seraing.
