Apparently yjh (helped) raise lgy while kdj was gone, I found out about this and began (artistically) vomiting all over my screen

I really like when these two interact. Especially their early-orv interactions. Lgy wanted desperately to dump ice down yjh’s shirt while yjh was trying to concoct plans to steal custody of lgy from kdj

i have many thoughts on lee gilyoung and kim dokja but i fear i may explode if i try to articulate them fully

there is something to be said in the way kdj and orv as a whole really tends to sidestep lgy. like kdj cares about lgy of course. and orv obviously wants us to care about lgy or else they would have killed him off for shock value or fridged him way earlier than they did or something. and yet he remains in the main story but still on the sidelines

i think there is something very sad to be said about how kdj very openly tends to love on/lavish attention onto sys and like consciously acknowledge that she is, in many ways, his daughter, yet doesnt really do the same for lgy. there is something very sad to be said about the way kdj tends to refer to sys individually, but only to lgy in the collective "kids." there is something very sad in the way kdj saw himself in lgy the first time he saw him on the subway and saw him both as a boy to be saved and a tool to be used and i dont think their relationship ever really recovered from this.

like he cares about them because he doesnt want to be a shitty father-figure but hes a shitty father-figure because he cares. and while sys is saved from the brunt of this to a degree because shes a character so he can just mimic how yjh treats her in worldlines where she's saved and get by on that, lgy doesnt have that kind of support. lgy is not a fictional wunderkid or pitiable, fragile little girl (however true or false that assessment of sys is). hes a snot nosed foul mouthed violent boy obsessed with bugs and death and kdj, i think, knows he ought to care for him but he doesnt know how and doesnt bother to learn and that, i believe, the not-bothering that is, is what truly incriminates him as a shitbag father. hes afraid so he doesnt try and lgy spends 90% of orv being terrified kdj secretly hates him and the worst part is hes almost right

Kim dokja somehow won the custody battle (he fully expected Yjh to win) and he doesnt know how to proceed.

Just thinking about how happy Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung will be when they find out that in all other universes, they live close to Kim Dokja

A lot of the of the No Scenario AUs have the kids as Kim Dokja’s neighbors or kids who live near by and have strangely taken a liking to him

And I think SYS and LGY would love that if they knew, that in those other possible universes, their Ahjussi/Hyung is still there and they can talk to him about bugs they found in the park, a neighbourhood stray cat or dog they feed, discuss homework with, talk about things at school with Kim Dokja not really understanding cause he’s in this late twenties thirties and basically being his unofficially adopted kids

Something I’ve been meaning to touch on is the whole “KDJ didn’t break the cycle of abuse he’s terrible father” or “KDJ was the best dad y’all lack media literacy”.

Look, Kim Dokja is a human being. He was a 28 year old, lonely, borderline suicidal man who’s never loved another person other than his mother before the apocalypse started (which that itself was a complicated case). In the end, he is a reflection of his mother. Lee Sookyoung made the decisions she did, could she have made better ones? Could she have communicated with her son more? Of course but everyone understands why she made these choices.

I’m not comparing her situation to KDJ’s but more so how they handled them and its lasting effects. It all comes down to sacrificial love. KDJ loves his kids deeply, he feels as though he doesn’t deserve them. But having them see KDJ die or lose himself over and over has undeniably left them trauma. More trauma than the apocalypse itself. His love led to hurting them. I personally don’t think it means he’s a horrible father and I don’t think anyone at KimCom would see it that way either.

Kim Dokja dealt with love the only way he knew how. And everyone knows that love was the truest thing. Because lot of the time, people feel so alone that they cannot fathom that hurting themselves will cause pain to people who love them. Who cannot bear to be without them or seeing them self-destruct or suffer in silence.

I want more orv readers to understand that doesn’t make you horrible. That doesn’t make you selfless either. You’re lost and simply need help.
