day late but here’s my fic for day one of @souyoweek2019

soulmates or music | AO3 LINK

AU where the world is only colored in grey until you meet your soulmate

Yu Narukami didn’t mind the grey of the sky.

There was almost something poetic about how the world managed to find variation when it could only paint itself in a few hues. If he was to look hard enough, he could find something special in every gradient.

He knows most people complained about it, how drab and boring everything looked; not that most had anything to compare it to. After all, the varying shades is all they knew.

Color was a fantastic experience one would dive into the moment they meet their soulmate’s eyes for the first time. Sometimes people would puke from the overwhelming amount of new visual information. Some people cried, wept for joy at a new color filled world, for new love, for their soulmate. There’s stories of people saying they didn’t even notice the change in scenery due to how beautiful their soulmate was, and nothing could have distracted them (Yu’s not sure how true those are, too him, it just doesn’t make much sense how someone could miss the grey fading away).

Dojima passed out within seconds of meeting his. Yu asked him one of the first nights he was in their home, and had instantly felt guilty for it; he knew his Uncle lost his wife, but the question popped in his head when his mother first told him he’d be spending the year in Inbana.

Nanako was asleep already, and Yu felt his heart stop once the question escaped his lips. Dojima winced in response, jaw clenching and hand tighten around the mug he was holding. The older man let out a heavy sigh, and Yu wished he could take it back, to apologize at least but his mouth was dry and no words came to mind.

Dojima took a long drink of his coffee, and then another before finally looking at his nephew with a sad smile.

“No,” He responds slowly, unable to keep his eyes on Yu (the silver haired boy isn’t sure if this is to hide anger or to hide tears welling in his eyes. He’ll never learn that it was the latter). “When Chisato died, everything became dull and I passed out. Which, now I can find only a bit amusing seeing as when I first met her I also passed out. She was so beautiful in the grey that I had to shoot my shot. And when just turned around-- Christ I couldn’t have known she was even more enchanting that I thought at first. That was enough to knock the wind out of me, but then the color? I feel like it was just yesterday. The only thing more beautiful than it, besides meeting her, was the day Nanako was born and how she looked up at me the first time I held her in my arms.” The older man lets out an odd, airy laugh before clearing his throat, standing from the couch and making his way to put his mug in the sink.

“Anyways,” He groans, stretching out his back. “Since that day, all color is still...there. It just lost some of its charm.”

And with that Dojima bid Yu goodnight, and disappeared up the stairs.

His Uncle is a good man, Yu had no doubts about that even if he wasn’t at his best right now. He laid in bed each night thinking about Dojima and Nanako and how he could brighten the world of a man who lost his light and to a little girl who knew nothing else.

He didn’t ponder on those thoughts when he would walk to class, he would turn to the sky, slow steps as his eyes traced along the grey swirls of the clouds. Inbana was so quiet compared to the city, and Yu already could tell that peaceful walks with the rustling of leaves and a distance train was going to be at the top of the list of things he missed when he would head back to the city.

But today, that peaceful quiet was interrupted by the whirring of a bike chain succeeded by a loud crash and a pained yelp. Yu took his time directing his attention towards the commotion, and he couldn’t contain a sugary laugh as his pace sped up.

There was a pair of long legs thrashing outside of a trash can, whoever they belonged too was calling out for help, voice strained and amplified due to their head being stuck in such a confined area.

“Stop kicking me I’m trying to help you.” Yu huffed as he crouched down next to the helplessly rolling person, who was quick to still after a weak apology.

It took a bit of shifting and shimmying on Yu’s part too coax the person out of the can, but he was soon able to toss it to the side, the person’s back facing him.

Yu the person was a guy his age based on his body shape. His hair was a mess, sticking out all over the place in a way that suggests that it was like this before the crash. The uniform this person wore was the same as Yu’s own, only visible difference from this angle being a pair of obnoxiously bright orange headphones.

“Ugh shit, that hurt.” The stranger said, voice cracking as he rubbed at the back of his neck. The person groaned, followed by a huff before swirling his body around to face his hero.

“Seriously, thanks. God knows how long I would have b--”

And then their eyes lock.

Yu feels like he’s been swept up in a tornado; the world around him was bursting to life in a dizzying way. The colors hurt his head, but he couldn’t bring himself to close his eyes.

As much as the freshly color sky called for Yu to look towards it, the silver haired boy denied that part of himself, instead doing his best to focus on the boy in front of him, who was frantically looking all around.

Yu’s not sure how long the pair just sat in silence, brains desperately trying to catch up. Outside of the now blooming headache in his temple and his sped up heartbeat, Yu felt find.

The same could not be said for the other, who after looking back at Yu had too lunge towards the trashcan to heave into. After a couple of gross noises, the stranger settled back in his place across from Yu.

“Fuck....I...you...this….holy shit.” He mumbles, eyes wide and trained on Yu, heavy breath in between each word.

“Fuuuuuck.” He whines, and Yu only cocks his head to the side. “You’re my soulmate. And you’re hot. And this was so, super embarrassing. Oh my god.”

Yu laughed with a honey-sweet grin plastered across his face as the stranger groaned loudly, dropping his head into his hands. The other boy glance up towards Yu, and made a lovesick whimper as he did.

“I’m Yosuke. Sorry, this is like, uh, a lot. But hi. I sit behind you in class, and yeah. Hi.” Yosuke’s voice is soft as Yu tries to muffle his laugh, almost forgetting to respond as he shifts so he can gaze into the other’s eyes.

They make Yu feel warm. He has no clue what the color was but it was officially his favorite now. It was breathtaking. The color reminded him of the sun peaking through his blinds in the morning, warm and unable to be ignored as it beckoned Yu to exit his dreams. Or of the way Dojima’s coffee smelt in the morning, a bit too dark for Yu’s tastes but it was soon to be evened out with the cup he would make for his daughter, with too much cream and never enough sugar if you asked her.

“Uh, hellloooo?” Yosuke called out, voice dripping with concern as he placed a hand on Yu’s knee. He jolted from the heat, the spark he felt.

“I apologize.” Yu started, carefully placing one of his hands over Yosuke’s own. “You’re just so handsome that I forgot how to speak.” Yosuke’s face flushed at this, and it only made Yu grin.

“I’m Yu, aka the luckiest guy alive right now thanks to you.”

And maybe it was jumping the gun a bit, but Yosuke surged forward and pressed their lips together.

(Dojima nor Yosuke’s parents were too pleased when they got a call that the two boys were late for their morning classes. But neither could be bothered to care.)

Yakkid - Dojima Airi

A mono-Daigo exclusive, and surprise later-in-life baby.

A pretty chill, light, person. He tends to have a pretty happy, relaxed demeanor. Rolls with the punches and, "honestly just glad to be here". He is content with just being alive. He'd call himself something of an "optimistic nihilist". Nothing matters, life is meaningless, may as well just fuck around and enjoy it. Why bother taking things too seriously?

That isn't to say he's adverse to or ill affected by the darker aspects of being raised in the Yakuza. In fact, he takes to it rather like a fish to water. Able to be cutthroat and ruthless, with a sweet, kind smile. He prioritizes minimal loss for maximum gain, with an emphasis on nuclear family, then the Tojo Clan, without forgetting to give allies just enough to keep them happy.

He does his best to be merciful where he can, and opts for diplomacy and compromise as often as possible. But he doesn't hesitate to solemnly inform someone that it's unfortunate a deal can't be brokered, before putting a bullet between their eyes.

Clever, perceptive, quick as whip, but careless. He can do just about anything and do it well. But good luck convincing him it's worth his time. He's looped through hobbies and skills, mastered and dropped them in turns, but can't be bothered to keep to them. Easily bored, but perfectly content to be as such, essentially "shutting down" and zoning out to cope.

The only two things he's properly kept up with long term are painting and violin, things his siblings fondly tease him about being "stuffy" for. Despite his very artistic passions, he is quite numbers oriented, and extremely complex math comes with ease to him.

He has a mean streak, and enjoys poking at people's sore points. A shit disturber, he has fun picking people apart. He's careless, and will often push too far.

He can be a bit vain, and reckless. When getting into fights, he's less concerned about injuries, and more about his appearance. Not that his is "prissy", he very much enjoys getting dirty, and scars don't really phase him. But if his hair were to be cut, for instance, he sulks for days.

Facially he greatly resembles his mother, but has his father's smile. He's not especially tall for a man, but had no trouble passing up his mother. While solidly built, he isn't as stocky as his mom.

March 9th, 7:12am, birthday

Airi was a later-in-life baby, and the pregnancy had a few more complications than her previous two. While she was ultimately fine, things were touch-and-go for a few days after the birth.

He isn't exactly sure what he wants to do really. So he just helps out whoever in the family needs it. He has a few ideas but nothing he's willing to fully commit to just yet.

Trauma for Flavor ; There are some serious questions regarding his parentage. Both Kimi and Daigo maintain that Daigo is his father, and he accepts Daigo as his dad.

However he knows very well that that is a legal paperwork truth only.

It's a wound he pokes when feeling especially spiteful.

"You have to stop."

Her voice was soft, but set. Firm.

"What?"

Airi looked up at his mom. He'd been rather subdued in the time since the… confrontation.

"You can't just-" she cut herself off, "I love you Riri, you're my baby. But…"

He looked scared.

"The same can't be said for Kadokura. He-" she huffed a pained laugh, "He doesn't want you baby. Hell some days I think he barely tolerates me."

Airi flinched, stricken.

"I'm sorry. I know this is all my fault and I'm sorry that you're hurt by it. I can't be sorry for everything that happened though, or I wouldn't have you. My perfect baby."

She held her arms out, and Airi decided that no, fifteen was not in fact too old to cuddle your mom.

He burrowed himself against her, half in her lap, face buried against her shoulder.

It was awkward, already he'd well outgrown her.

She didn't care. He was her son, and if he needed comfort, she'd give it. So she held him, and rocked him, gently humming.

"Please just. It's for the best, my littlest love, that you leave him alone. Be cordial, be polite, keep your nose down. I know-" she sighed, "Believe me, I know he's a difficult man, and I know you want answers, so badly, but you're not going to get them from him."

She pretended not to notice the tears dampening her shoulder, or the soft hiccuping breath.

"Mama, what's wrong with me?"

"Oh baby, nothing, there is nothing wrong with you. You're different from them, yes, but that doesn't make you any less perfect. You'll always be my perfect son."

Airi picked up on one of his mother's habits, and its something he's carried with him into adulthood.

That is, when he sees something and gets interested/excited, he tends to just grab whoever he's with, usually by the hand or wrist, and drag them in that direction.

He doesn't really care what relationship they have, he's just a very tactile person, and unashamed of pretty much anything.

Airi is a very active guy. He's working on building his international empire, and is very hands on. For awhile he was something of a guard dog/enforcer for Kichi before moving onto his own shit.

He is very fit, trained by all the best of his father's men and several of his own connections. (Mine is a terror, and made sure his beloved Daigo's beloved children were built to survive)

He does several martial arts, and is trained in a number of weapons. He regularly free runs. Much like his father, and MomPhe, he loves to swim. He's a good dancer, both as general club dancing, and 'proper' ballroom dancing.

What many are surprised to learn, is that he also does aerial silks, is quite good, and very much enjoys it. He can and will kick your ass if you try to give him shit for it.

Walking into the sitting room of the Dojima family home, Kadokura hesitated.

He didn't know Yayoi would be here.

Kimi glanced up, but didn't acknowledge him beyond that.

She seemed tense. Agitated.

Airi, (he was what, almost two now?) sat happily in her lap, oblivious to the energy in the air.

"That boy-" the older woman started before being cut off.

"Is my son," she was sharp, cold, "Mine. And your son is the one who's name is on the paperwork. The one who got up with him on nights I couldn't. The one who is raising and loving him as any son deserves. Doing a damn fine job of it considering the shit example he had to learn from."

Yayoi tensed, clearly displeased with the less than subtle insults.

Kimi didn't let her cut in.

"Airi is as much a Dojima as the rest of us, and will remain as such. Your opinion is, frankly, unneeded and irrelevant. Stay out of my family's affairs."

The former matriarch scoffed, "Affair is an interesting choice of word, Kimberly-san."

Kadokura tensed, still not quite willing to move.

The younger mother laughed caustically, "Yayoi I'm not sure why you're so interested in what I do with my vagina, but I can assure you, it isn't your business. Your son is perfectly happy with it, and his opinion is the only one I care about."

The woman stood, scandalized, "I see you can't be reasonable today. I'll be leaving."

"Good," she stated, "Bye," two separate thoughts.

The lurking man tried not to snort at the blatantly insulting farewell.

Spotting him, Yayoi sneered and turned her nose up, ignoring him as she left.

He entered the room raising a brow at her and she sighed heavily.

"That woman has always hated me. And she was never much happier with the kids. And now with Airi…"

He eyed her warily, "What about Airi?"

"I guess she doesn't like how late in life he joined us. As if Airi planned it," she snorted.

"He's my son. Daigo is legally his father. That's all anyone needs to know," she continued.

He pretended not to notice how familiar the boy looked already, even as his features were only just beginning to really take shape.

"Daigo will be a good father to him."

She beamed back at him, "He's done great with the first two, I'm sure we'll be fine with this one too," she pressed an exaggerated kiss to the top of the boy's head, "Isn't that right, my perfect baby?"

The toddler giggled, cooed happily.

She glowed, radiant, and he tried not to think too hard about it.

The text came in while he was busy, and he didn’t get to check it for a couple hours. She’d gone into labor, but it was still early. She’d be waiting a while yet before much happened. Just keeping him updated.

He wasn’t worried, of course not. Even with things having gone a bit sideways with Mio, everything had been fine. So she was a little older, and this one had been higher risk, it was fine. They’d already squared away the best possible doctors and suites.

It would be fine.

He absolutely did not rush.

Nope.

So when he spotted Daigo, perched on a chair outside the room, which-

Why wasn’t he in there with her?

Even when they had to do a last minute c-section for Mio, Daigo had been in the room.

The man didn’t look up as Kadokura approached.

“What’s the current update, Daigo-chan?” he asked.

The deep shuddering sigh didn’t bode well, nor did the way the man rubbed at his face.

The pause held a little longer, before quietly, “She flatlined.”

Something icy shot through Kadokura, and it felt like the world had fallen out from under him.

Daigo continued speaking and Kadokura desperately tried to hear him.

“Blood loss. Something went wrong,” he finally looked up, and the younger man looked so tired, “They got her back, and they’re working on stabilizing her now. But-”

He could see the way he was focusing on breathing, keeping himself level.

“It was close, Kadokura-san. It was too close.”

He couldn’t answer. Couldn’t bring himself to say anything.

“You should sit, hun.”

He barely heard the woman, Kimi’s mother, as she guided him into another chair, pressing a cup of cafeteria coffee into his hands, handing the second to Daigo.

“She’s gonna be fine. She’s a tough girl. She wouldn’t leave us.”

Kadokura fought the urge to scoff, trying to keep some measure of respect when dealing with the woman.

She turned to Daigo, “The kids are- Well not fine, they understand more than they let on, but. They’re staying pretty calm all things considered. Grandpa’s sitting with them now.”

“Thank you,” Daigo managed, “I-”

“Will be staying right here, and waiting for word on your wife. The kids will be fine with us. Text me when we know something.”

He could tell she was barely hanging on, keeping herself together by sheer practical need.

With a few more reassurances, the woman made her way back to the cafeteria, to rejoin her husband and grandchildren.

The pair of men sat together in silence. Waiting.

It could have been minutes, it could have been hours, but eventually, a nurse poked his head out.

“Dojima-san?”

Daigo’s head shot up, turning towards the voice.

“She’s stable now, and we have full confidence she’ll make a complete recovery. She’s still unconscious, but you can see her now, if you’d like.”

The man took a deep, fortifying, relieved, breath.

“Thank you. And- What about-”

The nurse smiled faintly, “Your son is doing just fine, Dojima-san. A very healthy, fussy, baby.”

He nodded, and the nurse ducked back into the room.

Taking a few steps, he paused, and turned, “Kadokura-san? Are you coming?”

The older man waved him off, a soft “I’ll be in in a minute.”

A minute, as it happened, turned into a couple days, as he avoided them. He never went far, but never went into her room either.

Mid morning of day three, Daigo-chan came to collect him personally.

"She wants to see you. To introduce her son."

It took a little fortifying, but he went. Following the Tojo Chairman into the private suite.

She was pale, still looked so weak, but she was glowing as she looked up at him.

"Hey baby, look! It's daddy!"

And for a second, just a moment, not even a single breath, he thought she'd met his eyes as she said it. But her gaze slipped off him just as fast, and settled on Daigo, and he dismissed the thought.

Daigo settled next to her, smiling at the newest member of their little family, and she spoke, "Kenshi, love, meet Airi. He's perfect," something wistful passed over her, and Daigo pressed a gentle kiss against her hair, "just like his father."
