Hi....Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite anime (can be series or movies) or top 10 favorite manga? And why do you love them? Also, what are your top 5 (or top 7) favorite moments from any anime (can be series or movies) or manga that you loved?
Sorry if I ask too much, feel free if you want to answer both of my questions or just pick either one......Thanks....
aaaahh no i'm so honored to be asked something like this!! these are REALLY hard questions tho LMAO like holy shit i STRUGGLED. i ended up choosing the series/moments that left me with the greatest emotional impact or were really formative during my younger years. this turned into a really long and wordy post so uhhh sorry about that, I would have added more pics but they couldn't all be the same size so i gave up LMAO. Anyways let's get into it!!
TOP 10 ANIMANGA SERIES/MOVIES (in no particular order)
I. HAIKYUU!!
I wouldn't be much of a Haikyuu!! fan if this wasn't number one on the list (even though I said they were in no particular order, haha). With how the anime adaptation is coming along, I do absolutely recommend reading the manga. Aside from the fact that the art is just gorgeous, I love how Furudate puts so much care into the characters and story. The symbolism and poetic one-liners that have no business being in a sports manga are fucking fantastic, the development is great, everyone gets a happy and fulfilling ending, and it all wraps up like an emotional sucker punch to the stomach. I also LOVE that there's so much canon material for fans to play around with, and that there's so much left to the imagination. Haikyuu!! really is just a master class in storytelling and a total dream to analyze.
II. THE NIGHT BEYOND THE TRICORNERED WINDOW
Okay, I lied earlier. I just HAD to put this one second. (I swear after this the order doesn't matter!) It has an anime series and live-action movie adaptation, which I haven't watched, but I've heard that they don't really do the manga justice. Now, I wouldn't really recommend this one to kids, which I guess can be pretty broad or specific based on your definition? Strictly speaking there aren't any NSFW explicit scenes - nobody even gets naked at any point nor is it the hated ecchi style with random underwear/breast shots or whatever - but the two main characters are pretty euphemistic in, say, the first quarter or so of the series.
(Hiyakawa borrows power from Mikado and when that happens the feelings mirror the pleasure of intercourse, to put it bluntly, but that's not something that actually ever happens. Mostly we, the audience, just see Mikado get red and flustered, although Hiyakawa says/does shit to go along with it sometimes. It gets milder -> nonexistent as the plot progresses because that's not really the focus of the story.
Also, if you're sensitive to dubious consent then this probably isn't for you, since a big part of Hiyakawa's arc is learning how to be less fucked-up than he is and he often uses Mikado's power while Mikado tells him to wait or slow down - not because he wants to hurt Mikado or make him suffer, but because Hiyakawa just genuinely doesn't know that it's the wrong thing to do due to his upbringing. I won't go into why for spoiler reasons, but it becomes really clear by the end of the story. For those of you who are willing to look, I'm going to show a couple pics of this in action down below - otherwise, please skip over it and just scroll down to the parenthesis.
I wasn't really expecting to to go as in-depth as I did about this, and I do love this series, but I also want to give fair warning since the way the dialogue and Mikado's expressions are depicted give off a very real sense of urgency that I would hate for anyone to be caught off guard/be triggered by. I'd love to talk more about it if anyone wants to ask, but I've already diverged enough from the original question.
I don't want you thinking that they have an imbalanced toxic relationship in which Hiyakawa has all the power and Mikado is subservient to him, though, because that's not what it is either. Mikado has always been his own person, and Hiyakawa never tries to control him in any way besides from his own misunderstanding of consent. They help each other on equal grounds, but apparently the anime does a terrible job of showing that.
END )
So, why do I love this series? Well, it's modern paranormal/supernatural, which I'm a HUGE fan of. Apparently Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen author) named it as one of their own favorites, and once you read it you can really see a LOT of similarities. There's a character just like Okkotsu in that they've done REALLY shitty things and don't know whether they deserve to live or not. There's also a lot of learning how to be brave when you've been running scared your entire life and taking back your own control/power through it. And, other than the heavy stuff, it's actually quite funny. There was one moment I wasn't expecting where I actually laughed out loud.
Also, the characters are really compelling! Aside from everything I said about Hiyakawa earlier, he's one of those nonsensical types who says the most ridiculous things with the utmost sincerity and with a straight face. Mikado acts as his opposite - he easily freaks out and is very expressive. Also, the villain? Like holy SHIT. I could go on about them forever. Like. Holy fucking shit. Top-tier how they handled the boss battle because hoooolyyyyyy shiiiiiiit. But I don't want to spoil, so I'll leave it at that.
Also, the background stories for the characters - once you get to them - will break your heart. Yamashita draws really simply, sure, but they have such a powerful way with storytelling that the emotions just hit you like a brick through the window.
Mostly, though, it is a story about healing, and I'm a sucker when a bunch of people who need to heal in different ways because of the same thing all come together and help each other. I can also guarantee a happy ending, so look forward to that!
III. SNOW WHITE WITH THE RED HAIR
Oh, how I love this series. I know the anime hasn't adapted to its current point, so I def encourage you to read the manga even though it's not complete yet either (and I started in like middle school LMAO). Shirayuki was honestly such a huge role model for me growing up - she was smart and pretty and determined and, even when she wasn't so sure of herself, she always wanted to do the right thing. All the characters in the main squad are so lovely and feel like a real family altogether, and I adore every single one of them. It's sweet and romantic and nails nonmagical fantasy worlds right on the head, and I'd LOVE for more people to get on board with it.
(If you need more convincing, there's pirates and festivals and assassins and a character to love for every single person out there. I know Kiki and Mitsuhide are enough to cause a crisis.)
IV. BOYS RUN THE RIOT
OKAY Y'ALL. LISTEN UP. YOU WANT MORE LOUD AND PROUD QUEER REP IN MANGA?? HERE'S YOUR QUEER REP COME AND GET IT.
It doesn't have an anime adaptation so you can't really watch anything and be done with it, but there's only four volumes so it's easy to collect. it's a story about a transgender teenage boy named Ryo who expresses himself through fashion and GOD I love everything about this series. Jin is the BEST ally. It feels like such a warm hug to see something so proudly represented in manga. ALSO Boys Run the Riot started as a prototype one-shot that the author entered into a contest, and in THAT one of the first characters prototype-Ryo comes out to actually reveals to him that he's Korean!! He kept it hidden and changed his name to protect his identity!! Do you know how fucking REAL Keito Gaku was for that!! Like there is a whoooole conversation to be had about that topic but that is not for now!!
Anyways yes Boys Run the Riot makes you want to cheer and scream when everything comes together in the end because it felt like an uphill battle you were holding your breath through the entire time and I LOVE that they get a hopeful ending. Give it a try, I'm BEGGING.
V. CARDCAPTOR SAKURA
Okay, I'm going to be honest: this is pretty much the only series that has a manga AND an anime in which I've only ever seen the anime. I hear it does a pretty good job of adapting, though, so I'm not too concerned about it. (I do plan on reading the manga to catch up to the Clear Card arc.) I'll also admit upfront that since CCS is a kids' series, there were quite a few problems in it that I didn't realize until I was much older and went back to it.
I like that Sakura feels like a very real protagonist. She was scared and wimpy quite often, and as a kid it was really empowering to watch her develop into someone confident of herself and her abilities. She's got such a great supporting crew behind her, too! I especially loved that CLAMP brought in Syaoran and Meilin from Hong Kong - even nowadays, a lot of non-Japanese foreigner animanga characters fall into the American or European category.
Also, Yuki and Touya. Just do it for them. Seriously. You can watch CCS for them and ignore everything else.
Mostly CCS, for me, was fun and magical and a great escape for a little kid who wanted to get lost in a world not too far from their own. Also, it's got that 90s-drawn aesthetic we all know and love.
VI. PLAY IT COOL, GUYS!
Honestly, I love all of Kokone Nata's works so far. She's one of the more modern authors who got picked up on Pixiv, and I'm really looking forward to seeing where she's going. Play It Cool, Guys! is one of my favorites. It's actually a manga in color, and Kokone Nata utilizes it beautifully. She has so many fun characters and makes normal, everyday life seem so bright and fun. And not to sound like a main character, but I'm also a very clumsy, accident-prone person, so it's really nice to be able to see the crew do everything that I do and do their best to overcome them.
I also love how naturally their relationships develop. Like, seriously - how would a high school kid, two entirely separate and totally opposite college students, a late-20s office employee, and a semi-famous author all fall in together?? Everything is up to fate but Kokone Nata has a way of never making it feel forced. It's not at all unreasonable to bump into each other at the bookstore or in the park - especially when we see that they actually DO interact as strangers first who all happen to hang out/live near each other, and they just drift closer when they finally recognize each other. It's so subtle but so amazing to watch in action.
Also, it's very soothing and fluffy and healing and you absolutely do not have to put the amount of analysis I do into it LMAO, so if you ever need a pick-me-up I absolutely encourage this series or any of Kokone Nata's works!
VII. POKÉMON
Yeah, yeah I know. But I couldn't not include another childhood fave!! It was one of the very first I watched and Ash is honestly such a great protagonist and role model for younger kids. Sure, he can be an annoying brat in the ten-year-old way, but he takes losing like a champ and he always tries to do what's right. He was incredibly selfless, kind, and considerate for a character of that age and growing up alongside that really taught me a lot about what I wanted to put out into the world. Watching any episode just makes me feel comforted and like I'm paying an old friend a visit and it will always be in my favorites list. Plus the dub actually has some HILARIOUS lines LMAO.
Also, the Special Adventures manga series by Hidenori Kusaka is a total gem and was my first introduction to fandom, so if you're a Pokémon fan who hasn't read it then I really encourage you to check it out!
(I would like to make a note that I got stuck after this and was kind of fishing around in my head for the last three LMAO)
VII. HIBI CHOUCHOU
This one is one of my favorite high school romance series - it's sweet and fluffy and might be a little cheesy, but the characters are all so lovely and you can't help but want to cheer them on! The plot is kind of ridiculous when you first start it - "all guys instantly fall in love with the super pretty MC who hates the attention and has been declared 'unattainable' because of her distant attitude towards them and ends up falling for the one guy who didn't act crazy-in-love with her from the start" - but it's really heartwarming to see the growth Suiren and Taichi go through. I also really love Taichi because he feels so different and refreshing from a lot of high school romance manga male lead/love interests that I've seen. (Maybe because of the glasses? I can't name any other male lead/love interest with glasses LMAO.) It's such a gentle series and feels like a warm hug, and watching two quiet people find their way together really did wonders for shy high school me.
IX. FADED FIRST LOVE
Oh gosh, this one is SUCH a gem! You know how sometimes people want representation as a sweet story that's not about an identity crisis but just having fun and in love? That's what Faded First Love feels like. It's genuinely funny and sweet, and while Aoki DOES encounter a couple homophobic problems here and there, it's mostly lighthearted and nothing he can't handle with the help of his friends. He and Iida are both learning and doing their best, and it's one of the series I go back to whenever I want a pick-me-up.
X. JUJUTSU KAISEN
I did say before that I was a huge fan of mixing paranormal phenomena with modern settings, and Jujutsu Kaisen is a great example of that. It's crazy how much thought was put into the technical aspects of that world - every time I think about Gojo explaining to Itadori how to channel cursed energy, it makes my head hurt. The monster designs are so creative and the characters are all such a great bunch. I tear up whenever I remember Miwa listening to Mechamaru's voice recording on the plane. What really nailed it as a Top 10 for me was JJK Volume 0, because hooolyyy shiiiit. Okkotsu's growth was FANTASTIC to watch and I LOVE how confident he is now and how he follows the philosophy of "the people I care about care about you" when it comes to Itadori.
So that's it!! God, that was hard. I hope you enjoyed, and for anyone else reading it I hope this encourages you to pick up one or the other!!
Honorary mentions to: Promare, Kimi ni Todoke, From Up on Poppy Hill, Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, and tbh I'd list more but that would take forever LMAO
This is already a really long post so I'll reblog or make a part two with my fave moments, I'll let you know!
thanks all <333

Can I request a plantonic for yuki doji with an onmyoji reader

A/N: Awww, a cute Yuki Douji request. Never thought I’d get him requested because he isn’t the most popular shikigami around, but I’m happy because he’s one of my favorites as well. In fact, he’s actually my main Jungler in the Arena spinoff!
You woke up to the chill of a winter morning in full swing. From the misty sky, snowflakes gently fell to the ground, signaling the epilogue of springtime’s warmth.
As someone who adored wintertime, you would always sit in the courtyard, watching it blossom and unfold before your eyes. Throughout the years, you would spend these little moments on your own.
However, this year was different. This time, someone was there, watching the pure white scenery at your side.
“You sure love wintertime, don’t you, Master y/n?” A soft and youthful voice said. Next to you was the owner of the voice, a snow spirit named Yuki Douji.
Like the snow that was cold yet soft, he was a kind-hearted boy underneath his icy exterior. Whenever you looked at him, you wished that others would see the sweet boy that you saw and not a distant loner.
“Yeah… I’ve always loved it.” You replied. Taking a deep breath, you exhaled against your hand as cloud-like puffs of air appeared on your palms. “Ever since I was a child, it’s always been my favorite season.”
Yuki Douji looked at you, doe-eyed. Despite his ever frigid expression, the light in his eyes told you everything. “You don’t hate the cold?”
You shook your head and smiled. “Not really. Somehow, it’s comforting for me.” As you took in the beautiful scenery before you two, your mind returned to those innocent days when you built snowmen.
“Master y/n.” Yuki Douji called out to you. With a face that almost seemed to be pleading, he asked you this. “Do you want to play in the snow?”
You warmly smiled. “Sure. Not in the courtyard though, we don’t want to make a mess here, do we?”
Shortly after, you accompanied your little shikigami outside. Despite how cold it was, the Capital was busy as ever. Coal sellers littered around on the streets, trying to make a living.
Yuki Douji looked around the city with great curiosity, seemingly amazed by everything. Although he had traveled around the land before, there were still many things he hadn't seen.
While he was distracted, you grabbed and made a snowball out of the snow below. Grinning mischievously, you catapulted it towards the back of his head.
For a few seconds, he was quiet and still as if the impact of the snowball had yet to register. Before you knew it, your face was covered in snow.
“Oho, looks like lil, ol’ Yuki Douji is challenging me to a snowball battle?” You cracked your knuckles. “I like the courage.”
If anything, you were the brave one. Given he was a snow spirit, he had the advantage over you in a wintertime related activity. Nonetheless, you weren’t going to go down so easily.
As his Onmyouji, your pride wouldn’t let you lose to your own shikigami, even in something as small as a snowball fight.
The match started out normally, with you and Yuki Douji going back and forth with throwing snowballs. Although you were even at first, your shikigami’s advantage as a spirit and skilled swordsman meant he could last longer.
“Think, y/n, think.” You told herself mentally. That’s when you had a brilliant idea. Since you were an Onmyouji after all, why not use your own spells to give you a bit of a boost? Making sure it won’t go on his radar, you quietly casted a spell.
When a barrage of snowballs was directly fired at Yuki Douji’s face, he went pale and fell down on his back. Now buried underneath a pile of snow, he suddenly realized what you did.
“Hehe, I win.” You laughed, as you walked towards the pile of snow. As Yuki Douji’s head poked out of the little mound, his companion Yukimaru had emerged alongside him. Looks like the commotion had woken up the little snow bunny.
“Master y/n… Yuki Douji frowned. “You cheater.”
“Hey, who said you had to be fair in a snowball fight?” You shrugged. “On the battlefield, nothing is off-limits.”
Lording over your petty victory didn’t last too long, as realization came over you. Passers-by who were just minding their own business were staring at you two.
You had caused a ruckus in the middle of the Capital, despite being an esteemed Onmyoji. Not a very good look for you, if you say so yourself…
Once you apologized and excused yourself to Heian-kyo’s citizens, you returned to the courtyard with Yuki Douji. On the way, you couldn’t help but notice that he was still upset over the snowball fight.
Refusing to talk to you, his expression was as cold as the snow as he stomped towards the furthest corner away from you. There, he decided to distract himself by doing his usual hobby—turning Yukimaru into all sorts of shapes.
“Huh, he really is mad at me.” You thought, nervously smiling. In spite of his straight-laced disposition, Yuki Douji was very much a sensitive spirit.
Now, it was up to you to make things up to him. Since you were dealing with someone who was practically a child, the onus was on you to be the bigger person.
Luckily, you knew exactly what to do.
After a few moping sessions, Yuki Douji fell asleep on the spot. Perhaps, he was exhausted from all the pent up anger inside of him.
A few hours passed while you waited, and he woke up. “Wait, what’s this, Master y/n?”
“It’s exactly what it looks like.”
While he was sleeping, you had personally gone shopping. Normally, no one sold fruits around this cold season, so you were lucky to find some stocks of his favorite—watermelon.
“T-This isn’t a prank, is it?” Yuki Douji pouted. Looks like he still wasn’t over what you did quite yet.
“Nah, why would it be?” You said. “Actually… I bought these because I wanted to apologize.”
“You still haven’t said sorry.”
“So strict.” You remarked in your mind.
“Fine… I’m sorry.”
Yuki Douji looked away for a bit, closing his eyes and frowning. When your words of apology had registered, he opened his eyes and said this. “No more cheating, okay? Promise?”
“Promise.”
Like that, he gave you a slight smile. Now that you have been forgiven, the two of you could play again like you always did.

Orgullo thoughts because…..he’s kind of the best? Who doesn’t love him
Orgullo and Akira are bros right from the start and had the most chill doji-master introduction. I’m imagining their first meeting went like Orgullo: hey, want to blow people up and have unlimited power? Akira: hell yea dude. They remain close for the rest of their lives after Orgullo becomes human (wait why am i tearing up already).......just…..guys being dudes. Hard ship, but at the very least they’re each other’s wingmen, and have totally tagteamed hookups
During the WWII three-year bad doji bonding arc, Akira and Orgullo still pursue Akira’s golfing career. The nation is shocked by Akira’s sophisticated, ahead-of-his-time golfing techniques, and the two literally receive national medals / ties to the imperial family for advancing the sport in Japan (idk why else does Akira wear that stupid top hat when we see him)
When Orgullo becomes human Akira promotes him to become his manager. Eventually Orgullo gets an MBA & becomes the head of his own management agency and one of the richest / most famous behind-the-scenes players in the world. Fussa has him on speed dial when WTI runs into any issues and Orgullo professionally (and sometimes cracks his knuckles and literally) fucks up anyone who tries to cross the band
He easily becomes the most well-adjusted doji-turned-human. I think all of the doji hang onto their quirks/emotional disorders for the rest of their lives but Orgullo integrates well into society
He’s spent most of his time as a doji in Brazil before he traveled to Japan & met Akira.
He absolutely hates snow & cold weather and whenever fall comes around in Japan he flees to Brazil for the cold seasons. Once he becomes established as a human he moves to Brazil full-time
He is closest with Desir out of all the doji because they both enjoy human culture. Desir introduces Orgullo to bespoke tailoring & gets him his first custom suits.
Orgullo is a heavy dom, obviously. He refuses to take a passive role during sex. Desir knows his type (power issues, superiority complex) and thinks Orgullo would love sub play. Orgullo gets angry and flustered whenever Desir broaches the idea
Overall he’s the Big Bro to all the evil doji but he has a low patience with them & is def that toxic family member that rags on others when they’re not ‘taking full advantage of their potential’. He yells at Eater, Avaro, and Hana when they get bad grades and though he still retains a small fear of Vice, he secretly judges him for living a chill vagrant life with K after he becomes human. He vents to Akira that he totally believes Vice could still take over the world if he wanted to, he has the intelligence & batshit savagery to do so
He doesn’t like Gauge. No reason - he just doesn’t like that there’s another guy as big as him. Slow thinks this hilarious and likes to egg Orgullo on and say he thinks Gauge is bigger/stronger whenever they have doji reunions
Orgullo hates golf but is cursed with knowing literally everything about it because of Akira. His favorite sport is soccer (bc of Brazil) and he’s also an avid UFC fan. Him and Desir become sports betting pros, and eventually Avaro joins in once he grows up but Orgullo always has to hold him back from making ridiculous parlays
The one thing he misses about being a doji is his speed - he forever hates cars and thinks most forms of transportation are dumb and too slow. He totally becomes one of those environmental menaces and takes 5-minute private jet rides just to avoid traffic
I now have an extreme desire for Orgullo / Akira content… hot bara assistant/manager that takes care of his top client….pl..s…

Soga Shōhaku (JP, 1730 - 1781)
Sessen Dōji-zu (the snow-covered-mountain child) Offering His Life to an Oni (Ogre), ca. 1764
In Japanese folklore, Sessen Doji was a young boy, abandoned by his parents and raised in the forest by the God of the mountain. One day, an Ogre demanded that he should offer his life in order to save the nearby village. The boy agreed, but then the Ogre was transformed into a beautiful princess and married Sessen Doji, rewarding his altruism.

Hey everyone!
Pasupare Popipa and I have been steadily working on this project and I’m finally ready to share it as I’ve started helping out Popipa on the recording side.
I’ve created an excel document that’s kept completely up-to-date with all new Card releases in the game and videos for what has been recorded. (Event stories, Bond Stories)
There’s already a LOT that Popipa has recorded while I’m now making my way through some of the older stuff we’ve missed.
If you have a request drop me an ask!

quick parting thoughts on fall 22 series that rolled over to this season and some winter 23 series that i’m prepared to call early
idolish7 continues to be the gold standard in the idol genre for me, as an anime-only following this part as it aired weekly sent my stress levels through the roof lmao but in a good way
fumetsu had a weaker second season than its first imo but its first season set such a high bar that i’m not surprised, the s2 finale hit hard even though i spaced out for probably like 75% of the season... currently undecided if i’ll follow s3 week by week or binge it all at once after it’s fully released
will definitely continue one way or another bc fushi... care him so much......
isekai ojisan isn’t even a fall 22 show it rolled over all the way from summer 22 because of delay after delay after delay lmfao and yeah i think it suffered a bit for it, but even without delays it’s... probably just solidly okay to me
like disclaimer i’m generally not an isekai fan at all but enjoy genre subversion/parody, which i think this did well to a certain extent, but it was still hard carried by koyasu
as far as subversive isekai goes fabiniku still can’t be beat, WATCH FABINIKU
trigun stampede looks great and is shit. i tried so hard. to stay positive. but no it’s bad. to be clear as an original series i think it would have been just fine, possibly even good, but as an adaptation it fails on pretty much every single level
kaina of the great snow sea started out great and i still love the world building to bits, i think the early episodes are a true masterclass in that regard, but the plot itself completely failed to grip me and the series really wound up losing my attention as it went on
blue lock and cool doji danshi are also both ending soon and all i can say is they will be missed
actually no i guess for blue lock i will also say the adaptation started out so strong from a visual quality standpoint but yeah did flag a bit in more recent episodes, i’m still happy with it even though some of the intensity from the manga definitely feels lost
#crab watches#various things#parting thoughts#probably not going to do solo posts for most things this season#was this a really meh season or was i just depressed

15: Amanojaku
to the conqueror go the spoils. when the oni king takes the capital, your life changes forever.
->explicit. contains implications of torture/gore, captivity/held against your will, mind-altering magic, noncon.
.
.
.
Day and night, you can hear the oni building a new promenade. The bloodcurdling screams of their construction, the endless breaking of bodies, haunts your dreams. You’ve never seen it, sequestered away behind the palace walls, but you’re told more than you ever wanted to know about it.
“It will be called Kisaragi Road, of course,” Kanemori says with malicious glee. He’s a fox, and no matter how convincing he makes his human skin, there’s always something wild and ravenous in his red eyes. His nine bushy tail flick restlessly behind him in excitement as he regales you with the gruesome details. “Construction began at the northwest wing of the palace. It’s paved with bones. Quite the ambitious project, but once the materials dry out, they turn a lovely shade of ivory. Perhaps we’ll go for a walk together once it’s done.”
Lord Shuten-doji graciously assigned Kanemori to you as a royal attendant, an action that only served to confuse and frighten you. You weren’t anyone special, a woodcarver from a family of woodcarvers in a small mountain town. You’d never set foot anywhere near the imperial palace until the oni took the capital.
You hear that Shuten-doji, the self-appointed warlord and ruler of Japan, handpicked a group of humans to stay there, new nobility to replace the ones he slaughtered. You rarely see anyone else beyond a glimpse, a frightened shadow slipping down the hall or carried off on the shoulder of an oni warrior. But you hear them some nights deep in the palace; the slap of skin on skin, their broken moans.
Kanemori brings fragrant tea, fruits fresh from the imperial garden and a tray of sweets, luxuries you’re still unaccustomed to. Your quarters are spacious and beautiful beyond your wildest dreams, gilded folding screens adorned with scenes of the four seasons, cherry blossoms, snow-covered mountains and winding rivers rendered in delicate brushstrokes. A lacquered dresser holds all manner of lavish gifts; folding fans, combs and kanzashi, robes of brocade and silk with the blood stains nearly washed out. You don’t touch them. You remain stubbornly in the plain clothes you were brought in.
“I’m going to steal them while you’re bathing,” Kanemori threatens, leering at you as you gingerly sip your tea. “You’ll have no choice but to wander around naked or wear the damn clothes Lord Shuten-doji so kindly and thoughtfully deigned to give you.”
“I don’t want them,” you mutter. “They’re ridiculous. Why does anyone need to wear twelve robes at a time? They’d just get in the way while I’m working.” Torn from your home, your family, and any sense of safety, all you have left is your craft. You work endlessly on new carvings, birds and Buddhas and cherry blossom trees, anything to keep you busy. Kanemori peers at you across the table in curiosity but loses interest quickly, lounging in a pile of floor cushions.
“Oh? You don’t know why your royals did that, either? Humans are so strange,” Kanemori muses, toying with a lock of his long, golden hair. He’s taken to courtly attire easily, enjoying it like a child playing dress up. Sometimes he changes his robes several times a day, favoring colorful contrasts. Today, though, he’s dressed down to just three layers, his robes loose and open exposing his collarbones and most of his chest. The sloppiness is uncharacteristic. He’s bored or expecting something. Neither of these possibilities bodes well for you.
“He’s coming back tonight, you know,” Kanemori says casually, pretending to be interested in inspecting his long, sharp nails. He glances across the table at you, searching for a reaction. You don’t even look up.
“Who?” you say. “The warlord?”
“No. Lord Hozuki. The one who chose you.”
You nearly drop your carving tools. Swallowing hard, you set your project aside and drink more tea. Your memory of Hozuki is hazy at best. Everything from the day you brought here is a blur of blood and destruction. You aren’t sure you would recognize him if you saw him, and the thought of him coming back, of having you at his mercy, fills you with dread.
You don’t disguise your shock and anxiety well enough, because Kanemori is smirking. He plucks a pear from the tray he brought for you, peeling the skin with his claws in long, winding strips. “Oh, that’s right, this is a bit shocking,” Kanemori says, feigning surprise. “You haven’t seen each other since you came here. Lord Hozuki has been busy quashing a rebellion in the south. I’m sure he’ll have gifts for you. Don’t tell him I said this, but he’s rather antsy to make a good impression on you.” He takes a large, crunching bite, showing off his teeth and the force of his jaw, as if you need any reminder of what he’s capable of.
Several members of the imperial court and what was left of their samurai mounted a desperate assault on the palace one night. By candlelight, you saw Kanemori halfway between man and monster, grinning sharply as he shed his robes and took a monstrous shape. “Go back to sleep,” he’d rumbled, and stalked off elsewhere. The shrieking, the wailing, the rending of flesh from bone kept you up all night. By the time Shuten-doji heard of the attack, it was already taken care of.
“Why?” you snap. “What does it even matter? He already got what he wanted. I’m here. I can’t leave.”
“It’s important to Lord Hozuki that you fully surrender to him.” Kanemori shrugs. “I don’t get it, but it’s cute, I guess.” A noise in the courtyard draws your attention. Kanemori’s ears swivel as he listens, a wicked grin slowly spreading across his face. “Oh, wonderful. He’s back early. I should go, I’m sure he’ll be excited to see you.”
“You can’t leave,” you say desperately, but Kanemori is already on his feet and retreating from the room, giving you one last heated look from the hallway before he slips away. He slides the door shut behind him, leaving you alone. You hear the earthshaking footsteps of Shuten-doji’s army as they return, the boisterous war cries of victorious oni. They scatter, some going into town for drinks and revelry, while others retire to the palace. You hear the humans you never see, low murmurs and startled sounds.
Lights dim and writhing shadows dance across the thin paper walls separating your quarters from the others. You see a man kneel as oni encircle him, hear his moans muffled and choked as he pleasures them with his mouth and hands. A woman undresses, slowly and trembling, her robes pooling around her ankles. Two foxes circle her, nipping at her ankles and snickering as she lowers herself to her hands and knees. All around you, shapes twine together, rut against one another. The humans sound like beasts and the beasts sound eager, moaning, barking orders, riding wave after wave of pleasure.
You hear the doors to the courtyard slide open behind you. You don’t look. You’re too afraid. The footsteps you hear are heavy but they don’t shake the room. The shadow that falls across you is large but it’s smaller than the other oni. Taller and wider than you but closer to human. You aren’t deceived. You see the horns and monstrous claws. You hear the drip of fresh blood spatter across the floor with his every step.
“I’m home,” you hear him say. His voice makes you shiver. He sounds human, too, like a man you might’ve known from your hometown. You swallow hard and sit very still, staring straight ahead at the obscene silhouettes reflecting from the next room. Those enormous, twisting horns could only belong to Shuten-doji. The king of the oni himself is just on the other side of the screen, a young man in his lap, lowering him slowly onto his inhumanly enormous cock. The human shivers and cries out the oni’s name, and Shuten-doji is so gentle, so patient with him, you almost can’t believe your eyes.
“You see them?” Hozuki says. “That’s what I want for you. For us. If you’ll allow it.” He comes closer. You hear him disrobing, removing his armor. Heavy iron falls in clanging pieces to the floor. He sits beside you. You don’t look at him, but you notice things in the corner of your eye. Purple skin. Not red or blue or even green like the oni, but purple. He isn’t one solid shade but soft gradient, pale lavender along his inner thighs but deep, royal indigo on his shoulders and forearms. He wears little more than a patterned loincloth.
“You want me to surrender to you,” you mutter, remembering Kanemori’s words. “I’m supposed to just roll over and let you do what you want.”
“Will you?”
“No,” you snap.
Hozuki hums thoughtfully. Kanemori had warned you about this day, when it seemed like some distant specter rather than an inevitability. He made it clear that you were chosen, a fate you should be grateful for. In Shuten-doji’s empire, humans were either chosen or unprotected. It would be unwise, Kanemori had said, to displease the one who chose you. You begin to wonder if you’ve just doomed yourself, if a word out of turn is all it will take to be tossed outside the palace walls, or if he will even allow you the dignity to run for your life.
“Will you look at me?” Hozuki says at last. It’s not what you were expecting to hear. Hesitantly, you turn and take your first good look at the demon who chose you.
If your eyes were to pass over him quickly in a crowd, you would assume he was an oni like all the others. But he really is smaller, no larger than a large man. His horns are short and jut out of his hairline, fleshy and soft at the base, nearly black at the pointed ends. Long, black hair falls down his back, the cut rough and uneven at the ends. His eyes are black with silver irises, and the red lining around them calls to mind divinity, but you’ve never seen a god quite like him.
“You’re not an oni,” you say, half a question. He seems pleased by your inquisitive gaze.
“No. I’m amanojaku,” he confesses, as though this is something to be ashamed of. You don’t understand his pitying gaze until he continues. “I can sense the feelings you’re trying to hide. That desire you’re trying to smother.” Your face heats with humiliation. He doesn’t give you a chance to argue, continuing, “I feel your disgust, too. Anger. Bitterness. Resignation.” He closes his eyes. “Resignation...but no submission. That’s a shame. Don’t you want that?” He nods to the silhouettes of Shuten-doji and his lover, locked in passion. The human is louder now, moaning shamelessly as he rides Shuten-doji with his head thrown back. The oni grips his hips, growling sweet nothings and words of encouragement.
“You do,” Hozuki says quietly. “I know you do. I can feel it.” He scoots closer. You hold your ground. His hand brushes against your cheek tenderly, tucking stray hair behind your ear. “You want to lean into my touch,” he murmurs. “You’re lonely here. So desperate, you’d even let Kanemori touch you if he offered.”
“I wouldn’t,” you argue.
“You would. You should, you know. Let him touch you,” Hozuki says. You feel hot suddenly, warm where he touches you. He traces one finger down the side of your neck and pleasure ignites across your skin. “Shuten-doji picked him for you. He has an eye for what humans like. It would please me, knowing you’re sated even when I’m not here.”
Rebellion flares up within you. You think of shoving him, fighting, trying to run. Taking your chances outside. You don’t get the chance. Hozuki is one step ahead of you, swift and graceful without a single movement wasted. He knows which way you’re going to twist and struggle. He knows which hand will claw at his face and which one will grasp blindly for your carving tools, and he captures both of them easily. You’re sprawled on the floor beneath him, wrists pinned above your head. Hozuki watches emotions flicker across your face, drinking them in as he feels them second-hand; frustration, fear, loathing. This desire, you’re certain, isn’t yours. He’s doing something to you, corrupting your melancholy.
“But doesn’t it feel better like this?” Hozuki asks. He leans in, brushes his lips against the shell of your ear. You have to bite back an embarrassing sound, a needy whimper, and it makes Hozuki smile. “I’ve been there for all of the others. When the foxes took their bride, she was reluctant. But I laid beside her while she slept. I whispered softly in her ear. Now look at her.”
He turns your head. The foxes are wearing the skin of men now, holding her between them as they take turns fucking her. You can hear her frenzied gasps and moans, begging for more, harder, promising her heart, body and soul if they never leave her. You can’t explain the envy you feel, the bitter want churning in the pit of your stomach.
“Shuten-doji’s chosen was afraid. But I helped him. I looked into his eyes and saw the truth he tried to deny. Love waiting to be awoken,” Hozuki whispers, but it’s hard to listen, hard to think of anything but how the fox bride cries to be filled. You think about Hozuki. What if you let Hozuki do that to you? What if you begged that sweetly and gave yourself over to him? The thought sickens you, but it also stirs poisonous curiosity and desire.
Hozuki lets go of your wrists. He embraces you, holds you on his lap like Shuten-doji holds his chosen. You don’t fight. You don’t give in. Your thoughts are hazy and not your own. You wonder if this is how the others felt, fearful like in a dream. Knowing something is wrong but not being able to see it clearly.
Hozuki doesn’t even let you keep that uncertainty. With a gentle caress of your cheek, he wipes it away, leaving tranquility in its wake. He gazes at you with something that is not quite affection but the closest thing to it a demon can feel. Something too possessive and hungry, needing more than you can ever hope to give. You close your eyes and the sounds of the chosen in their fitful nightmares of love surround you.
