A cute white rat enjoying the beautiful fall colors of a backyard dogwood tree! After so many cats from me, it was time for a rat! Autumn is drawing to a close but the leaves have been so beautiful, really giving me morale.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FOURLEAF ʚ♡ɞ WE LOVE LAIKA'S COMET
A number of the Laika's Comet Fan Discord members came together to create a small birthday zine for the author. The comic is currently on hiatus, so we made a collection of wallpapers for phone and desktop for Willow or other members of the community to use as they like ʚ♡ɞ
The whole collection of wallpapers can be found available to download here in high quality

hello i would like to tell youse about one of my favorite late summer/early autumn foraged goodies – kousa dogwood fruits!
kousa dogwood trees are native to asia, but are planted in the US in a lot of parks and along sidewalks. the fruit starts to ripen in late summer and is usually available into early fall. you’ll know they’re ready when they turn bright red – but the choicest ones are almost purple.
the texture of a perfectly ripe kousa dogwood fruit is soft and custardy – similar to pawpaws! the taste is a surprising combination of persimmon and pumpkin. the skin is bitter and grainy, but luckily it’s very easy to squeeze out the ripe inner fruit! this is the easiest way to eat them – just suck the pulp out through the hole at the top (pretend you are a hungry giant slurping brains for maximum fun).

they have a very short shelf life, so if you’re not eating them right away it’s best to preserve them for later use. the pulp freezes beautifully, but can also be canned or dehydrated. my favorite way to save them is to freeze portions in ice cube trays – great for adding to smoothies and such!
* This and cornelian cherry (cornus mas) are non-native, edible dogwoods. Native US dogwood trees produce smaller fruits that are either inedible or mildly poisonous.

We talk a lot about the altar and beheading (as we should) but I think we should talk more about Martyn's secret chest. If he actually wanted it hidden he could have just put it somewhere and told Ren nothing, he could have left an empty chest and pretended someone found it and stole the valuables, he could have risked everything and just given Ren a real location. Instead what he does is he not only hides the chest with what he'd need after his betrayal, he also leaves a note to Ren explaining how he doesn't trust him and leaves it in a chest he tells Ren never to open. In a way, he's building a trap. Ren seems to not quite listen to him when it comes to giving away resources and making deals so why would he ever listen to Martyn about this. Of course, Ren is going to go sniffing about the chest and discover his ally doesn't fully trust him, that he's capable of betraying him. If Ren called out Martyn about the fake chest, about his duplicity after Ren himself broke Martyn's trust by checking the chest, then that would be a way out for Martyn. It would be enough justification to betray his king the way he always planned to do. But, no matter how much time passes, Ren doesn't check the chest, doesn't discover Martyn lied to him, doesn't break his trust. When Martyn finally, after they've sworn themselves to each other and it's become clear that any plans of betrayal are just fantasies, takes Ren to the chest and reveals what he's done. Ren doesn't get angry, doesn't find any fault in his ally lying to him and planning to sever their bond, he just laughs and validates Martyn's fears, acknowledging why his hand may have made those plans to begin with. And then Martyn shows him the real chest, hidden maybe but still up on that hill, right where Martyn said it would be.

So, like . . . I changed my mind on the living room, and I like this so much better. No I did not just stay up until 6 AM on an obsessive-compulsive recoloring binge to execute this because I was feeling too lazy before.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 19 January 2025
The cut stems of Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) cultivars are used to make decorative containers for a winter display. The wavy stems of Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’ (dragon’s claw willow, Peking willow, wiggerly willow) make a dramatic arrangement and are surrounded by a planting of Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus' (variegated slender sweet flag).
