me browsing etsy and oogling fluorescent rocks
I keep getting autunite which actually looks really cool but what none of them mention is that it is uranium so no geiger counts, oops!
i'll just add cool things to my etsy collection to stare at because its easier to not buy them when they are not located physically near me
perhaps one day i'll see if anyone would take an art commission in exchange for some cool rock
#rock posting#screenshot#i did find a rock sale nearby recently thanks to a friend#bought a dogtooth calcite an epidote and another blue apatite#i'd brought my geiger counter so everyone wanted me to scan their quartz and stuff thats super benign#all my blue apatites are a bit spicy though including the one tower at the sale i bought

Vugs are very similar to geodes and are usually lined with calcite crystals. Because of the crystal's tooth-like shape, this form is called dogtooth spar. Custer County, South Dakota

Crystals and other geology of Nargothrond headcanons for @halfelven
Disclaimer: my scientific knowledge is primarily in ecology and medicine related topics and geology is not a strong subject for me. But I did a lot of research and I hope this is ok!
Speleothem are geological formations that form in caves from certain mineral conditions. Not all are crystalline but many are.
There are many sources of water within Nargothrond including small tributaries to the river Narog that are entirely or almost entirely underground, as well as underground pools, some of them heated. Dogtooth spar is a type of calcite crystal that forms around these pools
Calcite rafts also form on the deeper bodies of water. These can resemble stars in darkness and the chambers containing them are used for contemplation and other psychological or spiritual purposes, without significant interference or altering.
Many chambers and passages in Nargothrond are named for the minerals that formed there. These names were often originated from the dwarves who first inhabited Nargothrond.
Anthodite is a crystal with tiny, needle like formations. Its name means flower and it was a favorite of the elves of Nargothrond. Its likeness was often used in patterns in both embroidery and drawing
Frostwork crystals are another favorite, prized for their delicacy. It’s often found much deeper within Nargothrond, further than the living chambers and other main areas
The throne room and the king’s bedroom have ceilings and arches lined with crystalline stalactites, in a variety of colors. Sometimes light is deliberately shown through them to create a prismatic effect
A common theme in horror tales from Nargothrond involves people fusing or melding with crystalline forms.

/sobbing softly. Can we just- take a minute to appreciate rhodochrosite from South Africa? Rhodochrosite is SO lovely because it appears conveniently unique in its major locales. Rhodo from Africa has this dogtooth calcite form and it's very often this GORGEOUS cherry red.
The other recognizable locale is from the Sweet Home Mine, Colorado! Giving Colorado it's state mineral, even though it's should probably be silver because Colorado has been pumping that out for centuries, lol. But Sweet Home Rhodochrosite is one of the most gorgeous, fascinating minerals you can buy.
I am not sponsored in any way by Collector's Edge or any rhodochrosite mines or distributors. I just love rhodochrosite.
#mineralogy#Okay but Sweet Home rhodo is SO BEAUTIFUL these pictures don't even do it justice. I have a very very tiny piece because it's#crazy pricy; but I treasure that tiny piece#I saw that tall piece in person at TGMS and it is STELLAR. INCREDIBLE. AND EXPENSIVE AS FUCK.

What gem types can you see working for a gem that basically looks like the stereotypical aliens (so short skiny body big head no hair big black eyes) it would be cool if it could come in different colors but to make it easier it can just be a gem that comes in grey or green
100% ALIEN EYE FLUORITE CNDSJKFDVJK
Other kids of fluorite work too, if you want other colours
Calcite kinda feels like it fits too, plus there's stellar beam calcite (aka dogtooth calcite iirc) which in like metaphysical circles is meant to like connect you to aliens or something?? That one feels fairly appropriate

A very nice example of dragon scale calcite! (Sometimes referred to as black calcite.)
Found only in the Sweetwater mine of Missouri USA, this rare variety of dogtooth calcite sports some very distinct crystal formations that give it it's fancy fantasy sounding name. Being calcite though only puts this mineral at a 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, so definitely not as tough as the creatures of legend they're named after. ;)
(Those shiny metallic looking inclusions at the base of this piece are likely marcasite.)
💎 shiny rocks make brain go brrrr ✦ dragon scale calcite [x]
