A tale of two fluids Once upon a time there was a granite that rose from the bowels of the Earth towards the surface. At some point, it stalled in the crust and the 800 degree (C) magma started cooling amongst the country rocks in which it found itself. As the principal minerals, quartz and feldspar formed, the remaining liquid became enriched in silica, and as the end of crystallisation approached cooled very slowly and started to form large crystals of iron hued amethyst. After the granite had finished cooling, and approached the surface due to the erosion of the overlying rock groundwater saturated in calcium carbonate started to move through the rocks at the crustal level at which the amethyst found itself. As a result of a change in conditions the calcite began to exsolve from the solution and precipitated as a layer of dogtooth calcite crystals atop the amethystine substrate. Later still, iron enriched fluids draped a trace of red haematite staining over the assemblage, producing the final result you see before you. On the 10th day of Christmas my true love gave to me, two gems enjoying the snow on Earth.

“Tell me again, what is all this white stuff?” Iris questioned as he ran a hand through Dogtooth’s hair.

“It’s snow silly. Here on Earth, it gets really cold during part of the year and rain turns into snow.” He explained, sticking his tough out to snag a snowflake. 

“It’s edible?” the agate questioned as he witnessed the amethyst eat some. 

“Well yeah, it’s frozen water.” he chuckled a little before looking around the forest clearing. “We should probably collect the gems before they reform...”

“We have time. I just want to sit here with you for a little while longer.” Iris stated as he looked to the sky. He smiled then looked to the left of them. “Why did you make that weird creation out of the snow?”

“What? The snowman er- snowgem?” questioned Dogtooth with toothy grin. “It’s customary for humans to roll balls of snow up and then stack them together to make a crude image of a man. I figured since we just kicked the ass of those mutants I’d use them in our snow figure.”

“I must agree it looks better with the gems...” Iris laughed happily and leaned in to plant a kiss on his boyfriend’s lips. 

“I believe the humans say Merry Christmas?”

“Yeah! You got it! I told you I’d bring you to Earth one of these days. It just so happened we came during one of the most popular human holidays.” Dogtooth smiled wider and winked at Iris.

“Then my gift to you are these gems. See to it that they find a warm home inside that stomach of yours.” 

“Haha, I’m on it!”

Starter #8 - Dogtooth Amethyst

I got bored in the office the other day

and decided to do a fluffy lil intro to the office rock collection. BTW i love my job, but I work Saturdays and in September they are s.l.o.w. All these are ones I collected around my work. 

A quartz druzy, nice and clean, freshly broke and sparkily. The white blob on the left is a double terminated heulandite crystal. Sparkle rock, good rock. 

A leaf, a very good leaf. Once was alive, circa 33 million years ago. Has living relatives, fell in a pond, got buried. Lots and lot of these here, but nice big ones are still fun to discover. 

Not alive, never was alive, but grew the same way- crystal dendrites, probably manganese, making lil mineral ferns in rock crevices. 

Dogtooth calcite dragon head! Lookit that spherulite on the left too, those are neat. Great big fun unusual calcite formations in this, from an anomalous mineralized sandstone outcrop on my commute. 

A little blurry sorry, but this is a fun one, a jasper that looks like a storm cloud. I cut it into a block because it was too cracked for polishing and slabbing, and it soaked oil like a sponge, but so pretty... 

Blue agate thunder egg core with amethyst crystal, white common opal, ghost banding and dendrites!! sO much going on in this, I love it. Broke the egg on the saw so now it’s a desk rock. 

and an actual whole half a thunder egg, with root beer agate, white banding and yellow jelly opal. One of my favs, found it and cut it myself. Love this one. So dramatic. 

Blue galaxy agate block! Was too fractured to be slabbed, but too pretty to just throw away. Looks like worlds in there, lots of tiny spheres. 

Moss. Tubes. Zeolites. Banding. Inclusions. A perfect garden agate. Got all kinds of stuff going on in there. Crawled up a scree slope and made myself a perch on a cliff to get this out. Love it, even if it doesn’t polish great because of all the inclusions. It’s like a little alien world in there. 

Saved brightest for last. Jade. BC jade, from western Washington, it washes out the rivers and sometimes migrates down onto the beaches. Found this on the tide line while beach walking with a jade collector. Love it, favorite rock, the rock against which all greens are measured. 

Love my rocks, love that they surround me at work :P such a nerd but a happy one. also my cell phone camera has a fish eye lens for whatever reason and I hate it so sorry for the margin blur.
