I love a good pupdate. They adopted this shut down little dog. It wasn’t easy. There was apparently separation anxiety on top of nerves. A volunteer jumped in and gave some advice. 1. Consider a pet’s full lifetime before you adopt or take on an animal. 2. If you’re unsure… Foster. Volunteer. Get a stuffed animal. Foster an old pet. 3. If you absolutely cannot take care of your animal anymore. Do everything to rehome that animal. Family. Friends. Social networking. Rescues. Trainers. Everything. Ask everyone twice. Three times. 4. If you are 100% out of options and time. And you absolutely must surrender to a city. Then do everything you can once that animal is at the shelter to shorten the amount of time that animal is behind bars. Network. Network. Network. Keep fighting for that animal. Be careful with the words you use. Be honest. Inflammatory inaccurate language can doom an animal. 5. Realize any issue with the animal is probably something that you & your environment caused. Dogs respond to their situation and handlers more than any other animal I can think of. It was probably your lack of structure, training… lack of dog IQ. Another pet is not going to fix those things. You will only *#%€ up another puppy or kitten. 6. If the animal is old. And you think the animal should be put down. Grow a pair. Do the responsible thing. Do not surrender the animal. That is cowardly. There are organizations that can help if it’s about money. 7. Once again, I have no problem with people returning an animal that they have recently adopted or fostered. I ask everyone to listen to advice given and that I have literally spelled out clearly. Some matches are just not good matches. I would ask that you make that decision after 5 days giving the animal time to decompress. To get used to a new house, new people, car, structure, rules... 8. Before you get another pet… upgrade your animal IQ. Your ability to keep commitments. Figure out what mistakes YOU made. What you did not listen to. If cannot make a lifetime commitment… Get a stuffed animal or consider fostering or volunteering. No shame in admitting you’re not ready for a pet BEFORE YOU COMMIT TO ONE. To avoid problems in the future… Get your dog into training and proper socialization. Now. Yesterday. Tomorrow. Don’t just get a dog that you think is right for you. Get a dog that YOU are actually right for. Microchip your pets and make sure that chip is working and registered correctly with every vet visit. Spay or neuter them now. We don’t need more unwanted dogs in most American cities. See the world through your dog’s eyes, learn to speak their language… Don’t expect them to speak yours. They are constantly communicating with each other and us… Open your eyes, mind, ears and heart, and you will see this. Talk to someone who knows about dogs, before buying or adopting. Raise your dog IQ. Having had a dog when you were a kid does not make you fluent in dog language. Volunteering is the best way to get your hands on lots of different dogs and raise your dog IQ. Fostering is another way… Having a dog or cat should not be a selfish act, it should be selfless. Great to have @searchdogfoundation come and check out two of our dogs. They ended up taking one (18 month old) and they are currently networking the other… It was fascinating to work with them and watch what they look for in different dogs. Unfortunately, one of our dogs, Baby Wild (3 years), passed all the test with flying colors and would’ve been absolutely perfect… However, she’s just a little too old. It’s a damn shame. But dogs that are over two years old are considered too old. Because the entire training program itself is about two years long. I won’t go into her entire story publicly… But had certain organizations and people recognized Baby Wild’s potential earlier… She could’ve been picked a year or two ago. People just didn’t know what to do with all her energy and her absolute brilliance. Again, it’s not the dogs that are typically the issues… It’s the people that don’t recognize the genius of the dogs. @searchdogfoundation thank you so much for coming down. I will be in contact if other brilliant candidates arrive. Mike can do some of those tests and send you the videos. Do not get dogs that are beyond your capabilities. Increase your own dog IQ. Realize your own limits both physically and mentally. Get the dog into training immediately. Socialize your animals.
