im immune to booktok moral handwringing about dogearing books and cracking their spine because when i was a kid i would drop books in water, throw them about, rip out pages i really disliked, use a specific coded dogear for specific pages i really liked depending on theme, doodle on the pages, rip the corners off, eat them sometimes etc etc etc....
#also all my books were secondhand cus we were fucking poor so all of them came cracked and dogearred anyway#the reasons for this was because i was a really neurodivergent kid and i liked to interact with the stories i enjoyed#and this was my way of doing that

tumblr mobile updates are really consistently just one step forward three steps back every single time huh
#trousled rants#i have polls now but the search tab is megafucked#i dont give two ounces of a shit about what's trending or staff picks or whatever give me back my easily accessible tags#n i haven't gotten this update (hopefully never will) but apparently they've changed the video ui too?? n they're trying tumblr tv again????#and images are part of that for some reason????????#i hate the tiktokification of all social media websites i hate it so much sam i am#the only reason i even have the app is bc of easier access to tags and notifications and now those 2 reasons have been halved lmao#just wait until they find some way to mess with the notes tab i Know Its Coming.............#blegh not to mention they got rid of the permalink dogear at the corners of posts so now it's even more custom-blog-theme-hostile#shaking staff by the shoulders Will You Knock It Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If literature were nothing more than verbal algebra, anyone could produce any book by essaying variations. The lapidary formula ‘Everything flows’ abbreviates in two words the philosophy of Heraclitus: Raymond Lully would say that, with the first word given, it would be sufficient to essay the intransitive verbs to discover the second and obtain, thanks to methodical chance, that philosophy and many others. Here it is fitting to reply that the formula obtained by this process of elimination lacks all value, and even meaning; for it to have some virtue, we must conceive it in terms of Heraclitus, in terms of an experience of Heraclitus, even though ‘Heraclitus’ is nothing more than the presumed subject of that experience. I have said that a book is a dialogue, a form of relationship; in a dialogue an interlocutor is not the sum or average of what he says: he may not speak and still reveal that he is intelligent, he may admit intelligent observations and reveal his stupidity.
(Borges, from "A Note on (towards) Bernard Shaw," trans. James E. Irby)
#important to dogear bits you can just read at AI Guys. 'essaying' is generally the sort of verb that makes them cower#apologies to Herakleitos and to Ramon Llull#and you know. i think there is like actually truly a conversation about AI writing as potentially a kind of parasocial literature:#a relationship which only exists in its reception. something something idealism#chatgpt is a realdoll pass it on

I get it y'all love books.
you still have to read them. people aren't evil for roughhousing their books.
let people read in peace.
#dogearing a book is not a sin#not enough people read as it is.#just tired of people being like unlike YOU _I_ like my books#has the same vibes as when I don't mind people just calling brown brown#instead of like “Burnt Umber twinged with honeysuckle thrice removed”#I get a whole spiel about it's cuz they think art is soooo precious unlike me#lemme art like I wanna#geez#feels

My dad used to be a skater and the hobby was passed down to me. He'd collect skateboards and we'd both set them up and ride them. From the perspective of the usual sort of collector this might seem harrowing. It's like saying I open up collectible figures and play with them by throwing them down stairs as a kid would.
There's a concept I learned from that though, that was reinforced by a book called Disposable : A History of Skateboard Art. It's the idea that art can be disposable. A skateboard is scratched, scraped, chipped, and one day breaks. To apply art to that sort of item gives it an initial character. It's a canvas that you express yourself on by not only getting a deck that has art that speaks to you, but also by expressing yourself physically on it by riding.
Stickers, pins, charms, patches, clothing, books, they all wear down as they're used, and that sort of use applies an earnest sort of love to them.
#I think about this when folks get upset about paperbacks being manhandled by their owners#bending the spine#adding notes#highlighting passages#folding dogears#You can be delicate and precious about the things you own and that's valid#but to allow an item its purpose and see that purpose accumulate upon it#that's a love that I truly appreciate
