Why Doesn't My Dog Want To Go On Walks Anymore?
Tumblr media
Going on walks for a dog is like going to a theme park for the senses. When our furry friends are out on walks, they use their nose to smell everything around the neighborhood. Anything that’s been urinated on by other dogs, where another dog’s droppings may have fallen and wherever a cat may have been being rigorously smelled. They’re also taking in all the sights of people, cars, children, other dogs, and birds. The reason why dogs do this is that they're pack animals and to them, going on a walk isn’t about exercise as it is for us owners, but rather to patrol their territory. It's in their blood. It's natural for a dog to go berserk with excitement when you rattle their leash, ready to go outside. But what if your dog suddenly, doesn’t want to go for walks, what on earth could be wrong with them?-
Discomforting equipment
Most dogs have been trained since their puppy days, to accept a leash around their neck and to walk with it without fuss. However, some dogs have not and this will mean that they will usually refuse to walk with it on. The simple way to get dogs such as this to become comfortable with the leash is to put it on at home and allow them to walk around in it like normal. Problem solved. But what if your dog that has always been leash-friendly, starts to refuse to walk with it on? This could be due to uncomfortable equipment. Have you bought a brand new leash? It might chafe and irritate your dog’s neck. It might also be a little too tight in one spot, due to uneven pressure loading. If you put a coat or cover on your dog, perhaps this could be the cause of their hesitation. New equipment for your dog should always be introduced slowly. Give him or her time to become familiar with how it feels smells and sounds like. This goes for paw shoes, muzzles and any other equipment you would put on them for walks. Not fitting them so tightly on your dog is one easy way to fix the issue quickly.
Something is up
There could be something lurking underneath the surface that might be very troubling for your dog. An undiagnosed condition or pain with your dog is something that takes time to discover. Your dog cannot talk to you, so their body language has to be assessed. You might think he or she is being lazy by laying down, not wanting to move. Consider if it's an injury related to a walk or perhaps play that your dog had. Did they run into something, were they limping at one point or were they attacked by an insect or another animal? Before taking your dog to the vet, check them over gently with your hand. Gently put pressure on your dog’s body and wait for your dog to respond. The next stage is to take your dog to a vet to have them examine your dog too. They will provide you with chronic pain management treatments and give you general advice on helping your dog recover back to normal health.
Degenerative pain
As dogs age, they develop degenerative pains such as hip dysplasia and arthritis. Usually, these conditions occur in old age, but sometimes they are genetically predisposed. If your dog is hobbling or limping, without any visible injury, they may have chronic pain. In that case, you should look for treatment options that will help with the pain that is generally incurable. Take, for example, cbd oil for pets which works just like it does for humans. It will lessen inflammation, soothes aches and pains, and it can also lessen anxiety for your dog. It won’t alter your dog’s normal brain function either because it's non-psychoactive. Thus his or her mood won’t change and neither will their behavior. Some other treatments do cause dogs to change normal behavior patterns so it's best to go with options that don’t have any negative side effects that will impact your relationship.
Mix it up
Boredom can be another reason why dogs just can’t be bothered to go for walks. Mix it up a bit, change the route and give your dog something new to experience. Even a small change to your normal route will keep your dog entertained and always ready to go outside when you ask. Dogs are amazing creatures, the most loyal and loving of all pets. However, they have personalities and opinions too. Change up the route you normally walk. Use different equipment if it's irritating them. See if they were injured at any point by running your hand over their bodies. Read the full article
