are the talking crows still around? what are They doing while all this drama is going on around them in the world
Mostly doing their own crow things and not commonly having direct and mutual interactions with other sophonts. They're similar to yotici in the capacity that they have Very different modes of living than most other sophonts, and they generally are not recognized as 'People' in the same sense as humans, elowey, qilik, caelin, and delkhin. However, (given their strategic and intelligent capacity for word mimicry) talking crows tend to be comprehended as unique magical animals or spirits, or are not recognized as a distinct type of entity but rather feed into broader corvid folklore (as they are very difficult to visually distinguish from many common crows).
They make a few appearances in Whitecalf as small flocks of crows trailing the pilgrimage, picking at its food supplies and occasionally scavenging on its dead. This is a family unit of talking crows that has suffered heavily in the drought, with very few of their chicks surviving infancy and even some of the healthiest adults dying of thirst and starvation. They have recognized this mass movement of big two legged people as a source of potential sustenance, and are very persistent and skilled in keeping themselves fed.
In-text they may come off as an ambiguous, possibly magical element (or partially hallucinatory) from the character POVs, due to them going from a mundane presence indistinguishable from common crows to them uttering dire threats in clear and fluent Wardi. This is very unsettling and hard to reconcile for most who witness this, but is actually just a learned method of taking advantage of beliefs in corvids as ill omens to frighten off or distract targets while another crow snatches bits of food or a nice wineskin.
#Couya is experiencing increasing breaks from reality at this time and it is VERY unsettling for her- especially given confirmation#that it's entirely real and other people can hear it too.#Even noticing the fact that the crows will proceed to snatch food from behind her back doesn't really click as 'Oh I'm being tricked' it#just seems like an additional layer to the sinister omen#Brakul's used to the concept of birds delivering omens (though not usually through speech) so he's just like Well. You Heard Them.#Not all talking crows actually talk with other people and frequent use of vocal mimicry is a cultural rather than ubiquitous factor.#These Wardi crows have generally made a good living without interacting with humans and thus their ability for speech is not#a broadly recognized factor in Imperial Wardin and will usually be seen as singularly unusual and frightening when they DO utilize it.#talking crows#couya haidamane#brakul red dog

rating things that have been said to/about my dog, jasper
that’s a beautiful dog: 6/10 very appreciated but not the word that first comes to mind
he’s gorgeous: 7/10, same as above but slightly higher because the woman saying it sounded genuinely adoring
cute little thing: 9/10 very correct he is a little thing that can be very cute
can I have him?: 5/10 amusing at first but the insistent repeating of it was a bit concerning
what is he?: 10/10 excellent question
if I was a dog I’d marry [his breed]: 1/10 a little weird ngl

Why is it that taking care of others is beutiful and gentle and warm and important and always worth the effort but taking care of myself is ugly and gross and hard and never feels worth anything
#I am probably normal and well adjusted haha#like I am so full of drive to walk all the way to the Walgreens and buy my friends masks and hand deliver them#or make sure that my dog is getting walked every day and eating properly#or spend 90 dollars on food for a friends party#or go around for hours giving everyone news so that they aren’t alone when they hear it like I was#and I want to and I need to and I love to do these things#but then walking to the grocery store for myself so I don’t starve to death can feel like an insurmountable task#whatever at least i can be there for the people i love#that’s all I really want

I don't know how rich people aren't buying people shit constantly
#one of my friends got a concussion yesterday when he fell off his porch#and I asked him what the doctor told him to take and he said tylenol but he didn't have any#and he didn't feel well enough to go shopping#so I got on walmart's website and ordered tylenol and dog food and a couple other groceries to be delivered#and like the joy I felt being able to do that for my friend#even though I'm like. not planning on going grocery shopping for myself for at least another week cause I really shouldn't spend that money?#like if I was rich I'd be doing this shit all the time#I do not understand how rich people get rich and don't feel the desperate urge to do this shit for their friends all the time

Our dogs used to be really cute telling us when they wanted lunch.
They would waddle up with bowl in mouth and sit there with sad puppy eyes and beg for the food they were gonna get anyway.
But now? Them suckers just freaking yeet it across the house and then scream at us if we don’t get up RIGHT that second.
And if it’s still to early our biggest dog will just come and put his lips on my face as if trying to eat me because how DARE we starve him with only his 3 meals a day and resort to eating his humans? And when that doesn’t work he jumps up and sits on me as if we don’t have at least one other person in the house with working legs.
On top of that, I do dinner. Not lunch.
#he’s such a brat#at least our skinny just sits by her bowl and then ignores it when we do feed her because it isn’t in a puzzle mat#she also goes and steals out our big dog’s bowl not because she isn’t being fed enough#it’s because she likes the puzzle maze in said bowl#she doesn’t want the food she wants the puzzle#even if we put it IN HER OWN PUZZLE MAT she still prefers the bowl#and the bulldog just expects us to air deliver it and will grumble if we DARE make her move from her couch#dogs#they’re spoiled#funny

i went to the raw shop yesterday and they didnt have what i was planning on getting so i sadly bought some mince that will work for the dogs. the rest of the meat they had was stuff that i know albi is allergic to or venison which i think shes allergic to
but i dmed my friend who works there to ask if she could tell me when they restock the meat i want and she said she had some stashed in the back i could have!
so today we went back and got the yummy stuff and an extra protein that i didnt even know they stocked! so now the girls have goat, wallaby, and hare meat, plus the lamb mince and turkey i got yesterday
#raw feeding#allergic as in small reactions like gassiness or itchiness#and then i went next door to the supermarket and they had the offal i like for the dogs!#because my local only has chicken organs now and chicken is one of albis nono foods#so i got a bunch of lamb kidney and beef heart#BUT this morning i had a kg of beef kidney and heart delivered#so it was kind of bad timing#but i thought it was going to be delivered next friday#so surprise!

i actually do kinda like delivering groceries on the side because it gives me such a unique cross-section of the community. i never know whose groceries im shopping for until i finish the delivery and see them/their home and it's like it adds more detail to the picture of who they are. the baby supplies going to the apartment that i know for a fact is one bedroom (they'll be moving soon - i bet they're apartment hunting, i hope they find a place). the new cat litter box, bowl, and kitten food going to the house covered in "i <3 my dog" paraphernalia (a kitten definitely showed up on the porch recently and made itself at home). the fairly healthy boring grocery order that includes an incongruous tub of candy-filled ice cream going to the home of an elderly woman with toddler toys in the yard (it's clearly for her grandkids, whom she sees often).
shopping for someone else's groceries is a fairly intimate thing. i've bought condoms and pregnancy tests, allergy medicine and nyquil, baby benadryl and teething gel, a huge pile of veggies paired with an equally huge pile of junk food, tampons and shampoo and closet organizers and ant traps and deodorizing shoe inserts and a million other little things that tell a million different stories in their endless combinations. one time someone had me buy one single green bean. i messaged them to confirm that's actually what they wanted, and they said yes - neither of them liked green beans very much, but they had a baby they were introducing to solid foods, and they wanted to let him try one to see if he liked them. another time i had someone request 50 fresh roma tomatoes - not for a restaurant, but for a person in an apartment. the kitchen behind them smelled like basil and garlic when they opened the door. another time i brought groceries to three elderly blind women who share a house. that was one of the few times i have ever broken my rule and gone inside a place i've delivered to, because they asked if i could place the grocery bags in a specific location in the kitchen for them to work on unloading and there was no way i was going to refuse helping.
i gripe about the poor tippers, but people can also be incredibly kind. one time i took shelter from a sudden vicious hailstorm inside an older lady's home in a trailer park, while i was in the middle of delivering her groceries. we both huddled just inside the door, watching in shock as golf-ball-sized hail swept through for about five minutes and then disappeared. she handed me an extra $10 bill on my way out the door.
when covid was at its deadliest, people would leave extra (often lysol-scented) cash tips and thank-you notes for me taped to the door or partially under the mat. i especially loved the clearly kid-drawn thank you notes with marker renderings of blobby people in masks, or trees, or rainbows. in summer of 2020 i delivered to a nice older couple who lived outside of town in the hills, and they insisted i take a huge double handful of extra disposable gloves and masks to wear while shopping - those were hard to find in stores at the time, but they wanted me to have some of their supply and wouldn't take no for an answer.
anyway. all this to say people are mostly good, or at least trying to be, despite my complaints.
