The H5N1 (bird flu) virus is going around, and cats are proving especially susceptible to it. A big cat sanctuary in Washington state had TWENTY of their big cats (cougars, tigers, etc) die of bird flu.
There have also been cases of indoor-only domestic cats getting sick or even dying of bird flu after contracting it from raw cat food. And of course coming into contact with birds also puts your cat at risk.
To keep your cat safe:
Keep them away from birds, preferably keeping them entirely inside. If they are indoor-outdoor then remove any bird feeders from your yard to make cat-bird contact less likely.
Do NOT feed them raw food of any sort, including freeze-dried raw food. Freezing will not kill the virus!
A lot of raw pet food companies are using PR speak to assure customers that their raw food is safe. Remember that at the end of the day their priority is to make money and stay in business. Unless they are testing every bird carcass for the virus their assurances are meaningless, and they certainly are not testing every bird because it would be too expensive.
Cooking kills most viruses and bacteria, including H5N1.

i think the most annoying part of dog food discourse is how many people will act as though proplan/hill’s/Royal canin diets aren’t extremely and prohibitively expensive and that THAT is the reason so many people look into healthy alternatives.
People complain about corn being in the first five ingredients on most of those feeds because, regardless of other factors here, that is not an expensive ingredient. But it makes up a large chunk of the dry food. So the dry food should be fairly affordable, right?
Tumblr media
Oh… with tax you’re spending about $100 for one 45lb bag of food where the third ingredient is wheat and the fourth and fifth ingredients are corn.
Tumblr media
Oh… well! It’s slightly cheaper! But the second ingredient is rice, third is wheat, fourth is corn, and then fifth is poultry byproduct. None of those are very expensive so this just must be the low end cost of dog food unfortunately. The vets recommend it so surely that means prices aren’t inflated, right?
Tumblr media
Oh? This one has similar ingredients with the only real difference being no corn? And it’s half the price?? Well surely that’s just a fluke.
Tumblr media
Oh. Oh no.
Tumblr media
This one even has CORN in it and it’s $20 cheaper?? Wow!
Like listen at some point I don’t care if your dog food has the ichor of the gods in it, I’m not spending $100 every five days if there are cheaper options with just as many “good” ingredients in it. If you think I’m a dog abuser because I can’t afford this overpriced garbage, that’s too bad. I don’t care. My dogs are perfectly healthy with the food I give them. Great weight and great coat. People giving dog food recommendations that aren’t those top three hyper-expensive dog foods aren’t trying to epic own those dastardly vets half the time, but I really don’t blame the ones who do lose trust in vets when the only heartworm protection they recommend lately are expensive triple-action brands like Simparica Trio that costs $120+ as opposed to the other heartworm protections that are only about $40-$60 on average, which is still cheaper even if you add on a $20-$40 flea and tick protection separately, and only recommend dog food that costs $85+ a bag even if your dog doesn’t have specialized dietary needs.
Those top three foods are GREAT at making competent prescription diets, I don’t deny that. I do still have to criticize the pricing of those prescription diets though because I have spoken to DOZENS of people who had to pull their pets off of a prescription diet and struggle to find something comparable because they couldn’t afford the food, and that’s terrible! These are not poor companies! Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill’s can ABSOLUTELY afford to lower their prices to make their food accessible to people who need it for their animals but they don’t. They probably never will. Because at the core they are run by greedy corporations. It doesn’t matter how many good nutritionists are on board if the company is run by people who put profits over customers and make the food impossible for people to afford.
#I keep seeing posts from people on both sides of this#and it is frustrating to see how many vets don’t seem to acknowledge#that a MASSIVE part of the dog food debate has and always will be#the inaccessibility of these three brands#because whether corn is good or bad or neutral for a dog#It’s a cheap ingredient#any meat byproducts are a cheap ingredient#wheat in any form is a cheap ingredient#rice is a cheap ingredient#they aren’t putting Diamond dust and gold flakes in the kibble it’s very accessible and affordable ingredients for the most part#and many comparatively smaller companies use very similar ingredients and make food people can actually afford#So yeah when people look at these factors it does make them distrust vets who will almost exclusively push expensive brands#and that’s where the distrust is coming from#it’s not primarily smug tiktok kids who think they know everything#it’s just people who have less money than you and get treated like they care less for their animals because of it lol#and people who feel scammed because anything veterinary is already expensive to the point not everyone can afford it as regularly as needed#the fact people have to give pets vaccines themselves to make ends meet because most vets charge so much just to walk in the door#is a sign of a larger problem#I criticize people who avoid taking animals with surprise sickness or injuries to the vet#but it’s not exactly hard to see why that isn’t even an option for a lot of people#people can’t even afford surgery on themselves if they’re suddenly injured out of the blue in this country#So I can’t pretend to be shocked they don’t have $10k squirreled away if something unavoidable happens to a pet#no one is entitled to an animal they can’t afford yes yes but a routine vet visit shouldn’t be $600-$1000 per animal sorry#give me a copay or something

#my desserts#okay the hot dog and hamburgers aren't my design they're one of the standard designs we're supposed to make#and about a week ago we were having a store tour#which is essentially when a bunch of rich people from higher up in the company come walk around the store#so everyone has to work way harder to make everything perfect and jam pack the shelves with food#so that they can look at it#and they send in people who's job it is to micro manage everything in the lead up to them coming#and they always insist on coming on like a monday or tuesday so most of that stuff expires and goes in the garbage#like if they at least came on like a thursday we could be prepped for the weekend rush#it costs a lot of money too like my manager owns the store and he personally has to pay for like#getting everything professionally cleaned and the extra hours and the extra product#and this was like the 6th visit in the past year! usually you get 1 or 0 visits in a year! why do they keep coming back!!!!#and this visit they were adamant about having those hot dog and hamburger cupcakes out as 6 packs#and if you're going to do 6 packs anything less than 24 packs looks pathetic#those of you who can do multiplication know that that is 144 cupcakes#and those of you with keen eyes can see that the bun is made by cutting off the top of the cupcake. which is very tedious#those cupcakes took me THREE HOURS to do#then as soon as they went out on the floor someone placed an order for 24 6 packs this coming weekend so that took me three more hours 😑#anyway after all that the higher ups didn't even come. they had 'dinner reservations'#but yeah making 16 to sell individually isn't so bad

Blossica Christmas headcanons? ^-^ /lh
Tumblr media
Me to everyone that sends me Blossica asks
This is the second Christmas they spent together, so they're more used to how Christmas works in the suitcase.
Back at their first Christmas alongside the Team Timekeeper, when there were less arcanists that there are now, it proved hard to get used to their traditions.
Or the amalgamations of these.
Jessica had spent some time confused over the decorations, and the attempts to get her not to eat the Christmas tree is an every day struggle even to this day.
The first year, it had been Jessica learning about this strange tradition. A decorated tree with "candy" that is actually made out of glass, shiny spheres that hang from the ceiling, weird soft triangular hats on everyone's head.
Jessica had to learn some things about Christmas before getting used to it, that being everything.
For Blonney, however, the thing that she had to get used to was the overflowing warmth and companionship. There were no family discussions, no envious comments flying around.
For both, it had been a strange change of pace, but not an unwelcomed one! Especially when Jessica could eat whatever she wanted from the table.
From that first experience to now, I have to say some things stayed the same.
They'd spend the days together watching shitty movies Vertin gave them, wrapping gifts for exchanges and trying to get Jessica not to eat the crystal candy canes.
Tooth Fairy rarely joins them for Christmas, considering she has her own family that's still alive and still shares time with her, but they tend to exchange gifts when she's able to spend some time with them.
Horropedia is their unwanted companion who has made himself a place on their couch to watch shitty movies, sometimes joined by a friend or two.
So far, they'd spend more time together than in company, after all it's time you spend with your loved ones. Though they participate in the suitcase's gift exchanges and dinner time.
And they can never be completely alone with Vertin and Horropedia around, so you can call it quality time with your lover and that one friend that also wants some company.

i already resent chewy for their constant packaging mistakes and overly aggressive marketing but it's really shitty of them to have a "highest quality food" button that takes you to all the heart disease causing foods instead of the actual highest quality ones that don't do that

Fast Food Hot Dogs: A Quick Guide to Deliciousness
Tumblr media
Let's face it, sometimes life is busy. Between work, errands, and family commitments, there just aren't always hours to spend crafting a gourmet meal. But that doesn't mean you have to settle for boring, flavorless fast food. Fast food hot dogs can be a delicious and satisfying option – if you know where to look!
This guide will help you navigate the world of fast food hot dogs and point you in the direction of some seriously delicious options, particularly in the hot dog haven of California.
Beyond the Bland: The Rise of the Gourmet Fast Food Hot Dog
For decades, fast food hot dogs were synonymous with one thing: mediocrity. Think limp hot dogs nestled in soggy white buns, drowned in ketchup and mustard. Thankfully, those days are fading fast. A growing trend is taking hold – the rise of the gourmet fast food hot dog.
California Hot Dog Restaurants: Leading the Pack
California, a state known for its love of innovation and fresh ingredients, is at the forefront of this exciting trend. Several California hot dog restaurants are putting a delicious spin on the classic fast food hot dog, offering gourmet options that are both quick and satisfying.
What Makes a Great Fast Food Hot Dog?
Not all fast food hot dogs are created equal. Here's what separates the good from the great:
Quality Ingredients: Ditch the mystery meat! Look for restaurants that use premium ingredients like all-natural sausages, fresh toppings, and high-quality buns.
Flavor Creativity: Gone are the days of plain ketchup and mustard. The best fast food hot dog restaurants offer exciting flavor combinations with unique toppings that elevate the hot dog experience.
Speed and Convenience: Fast food is all about speed and convenience. The best fast food hot dogs should be prepared quickly without sacrificing quality or taste.
Frankfurters Hot Dogs: A California Classic
Frankfurters Hot Dogs is a California institution, a place where generations have enjoyed classic all-beef hot dogs. While they offer a delicious taste of nostalgia, they might not be what you're looking for if you're craving a more adventurous fast food hot dog experience.
The Best Hot Dog Company in California? Exploring Your Options
So, where can you find the best gourmet fast food hot dog experience in California? Here are a few options to consider:
Frank and Furter's: We might be a little biased, but Frank and Furter's is a great option for those seeking a gourmet fast food hot dog experience. We use premium all-natural sausages, fresh toppings, and delicious toasted buns to create hot dogs that are both delicious and satisfying.
Local Hot Dog Stands: Don't underestimate the power of your local hot dog stand! Many offer unique and delicious hot dog creations that are anything but ordinary.
Tips for Finding Delicious Fast Food Hot Dogs
Here are some tips for finding delicious fast food hot dogs:
Search Online: Use keywords like "Fast Food Hot Dogs near me" or "Gourmet Hot Dogs in California" to find restaurants in your area.
Read Reviews: Online reviews can be a great way to get a sense of what other people are saying about a restaurant's hot dogs.
Look for Unique Toppings: A menu that boasts interesting and unique toppings is a good sign that the restaurant takes their hot dogs seriously.
Don't Be Afraid to Experiment: With so many options available, don't be afraid to try something new. You might just discover your next favorite hot dog!
The Final Bite: Fast Food Hot Dogs Don't Have to Be Bland
Fast food hot dogs have come a long way. With a little research and exploration, you can find delicious and satisfying gourmet hot dog options that are perfect for a quick and tasty meal. So, next time you're craving a hot dog, ditch the drive-thru and explore the exciting world of fast food hot dogs in California! You might just be surprised at what you discover.
Bonus Tip: Craving a gourmet hot dog experience at home? While Frank and Furter's is always the best option, here's a quick tip – elevate your grocery store hot dogs with some delicious toppings from your kitchen! Think caramelized onions, sauteed peppers, or even a drizzle of your favorite hot sauce.

you really admitted to feeding your pet Rachel Ray brand while discouraging people from using vet approved brands huh
Yes, anon. Because that is the food my veterinarian recommended for my dogs, you ninny.

this is what I feed my dogs, again, something discussed with my vet, who I would imagine knows more about pet nutrition than you do.

our vet whom i appreciate so much went to an IBD seminar and she's now decided to let us try a novel protein diet based on what she learned...if u told me this like 3 months ago i would have been thrilled but now im just so hesitant! enzo has had a really tough time since July in getting his IBD settled. Usually from dietary indiscretion, once seemingly an immune response after being vaccinated but of course I can't ever know for sure - after his vaccination i was on a trip for a long weekend and it's possible he ate something at his sitters house. (highly doubt it was stress or anxiety. he is very resilient about me leaving him and he likes spending time with other people and dogs) i never did testing for that flare up and just treated at home so I really don't know for sure what caused it.
In any case until he's more stable again im so scared of changing anything. We at least have hydrolyzed kibble that he can return to if he responds poorly to the novel protein (we chose rabbit) but im still soooo nervous
