The Best News of Last Week - January 15, 2024
🎊 - As we embark on another journey around the sun, I am thrilled to bring you the first newsletter of the year, packed with inspiring, informative, and sometimes downright amusing stories.
1. Marijuana meets criteria for reclassification as lower-risk drug
Marijuana has a lower potential for abuse than other drugs that are subjected to the same restrictions, with scientific support for its use as a medical treatment, researchers from the US Food and Drug Administration say in documents supporting its reclassification as a Schedule III substance.
2. South Korea passes law banning dog meat trade
The slaughter and sale of dogs for their meat is to become illegal in South Korea after MPs backed a new law. The legislation, set to come into force by 2027, aims to end the centuries-old practice of humans eating dog meat.
3. After 20 years in a tiny cage, these 'broken bears' are finally feeling the grass beneath their paws
These bears, termed "broken bears" due to physical and psychological trauma from years of abuse, are treated at the Tam Dao rescue center with individually tailored diets, physiotherapy, and medical care. The bear bile trade, which involves extracting bile for traditional Asian medicine, has been illegal in Vietnam since 2005, but a black market still exists.
4. France just got its first openly gay prime minister.
Gabriel Attal is France’s youngest-ever prime minister at age 34 and the first who is openly gay.
5. Australian ‘builders without borders’ repairing war-torn homes and schools in Ukraine
Manfred Hin, a 66-year-old builder from Townsville, Australia, spent most of 2023 volunteering in Ukraine to rebuild homes and schools damaged by Russian attacks. Having contributed to over 50 house and a dozen school renovations, he worked with Ukrainian charity Brave to Rebuild, mentoring young volunteers and sourcing three tonnes of donated tools.
Inspired by Hin's story, Tasmanian carpenter Hamish Stirling also joined the efforts, learning Ukrainian, traveling to Europe, and volunteering for three months to help rebuild homes.
6. The age-standardized death rate from cancer has declined by 15% since 1990
The age-standardized death rate from cancer declined by 15%
Cancer kills mostly older people – as the death rate by age shows, of those who are 70 years and older, 1% die from cancer every year. For people who are younger than 50, the cancer death rate is more than 40-times lower (more detail here).
7. Germany Reached 55% Renewable Energy in 2023
In 2023, 55 percent of Germany’s power came from renewables — an increase of 6.6 percent, according to energy regulator Bundesnetzagentur, reported Reuters. Europe’s biggest national economy has a goal of 80 percent green energy by 2030.

Drones, snipers, razor wire, sniffer dogs, body armor, bulletproof glass, and 24-hour armed security.
This is not a list of protections in place for a visit by the president of the United States nor the contents of a shipment to frontline troops fighting in Ukraine. This is a list of the security measures election officials in counties across the US have had to implement ahead of Tuesday’s vote as a result of the unprecedented threats they have faced in recent years.
Officials are putting in place the typical final measures to ensure the smooth operation of an election, but beyond checking that they have enough ballots and that machines are working properly, officials are now faced with having to monitor for threats and make sure they have done everything they can to protect themselves and their staff.
“Given the current political environment, the possibility that an event may occur has increased, and our election professionals have responded in kind,” says Tammy Patrick, a former election official in Arizona’s Maricopa County who is now a senior adviser at the nonprofit Bolstering Elections Initiative. “Efforts focusing on the physical security of the voters, election workers, and staff by putting in bulletproof glass, panic buttons, razor wire, and fencing are fairly common, as is the installation of surveillance cameras and systems, cyber protections, and training on de-escalation techniques and response drills.”
Nowhere in the US is the militarization of the election process more evident than in Maricopa County.
The fourth largest county in the nation, Maricopa became ground zero for election denial conspiracists in recent years, after GOP lawmakers sanctioned a bogus recount in 2021, run by the Florida company Cyber Ninjas.
As a result, the county has for years been putting increased security measures in place. “We're a fortress now,” Stephen Richer, the Maricopa County Recorder, told WIRED back in February, outlining how he had to navigate security fencing, metal detectors, and security checks in order to get into his office.
As the 2024 election approaches, the measures Maricopa officials are putting in place have been ratcheted up significantly.
Officials have added a second layer of security fencing to protect election offices, as well as concrete k-rails, which means election workers will be bused in from offsite locations due to reduced parking spaces. At the country’s tabulation center, every door will be fitted with metal detectors, floodlights will be installed, and on election day the center will be protected by a ring of snipers deployed on roofs around the building, election officials told NBC.
There will also be mounted police on standby outside the building, round-the-clock armed security, and drones in flight over the building, monitoring for approaching threats. The entire election office building is also covered in security cameras that livestream everything online for anyone to watch, a security measure that doubles as a way of offering transparency into its election process.
“The security and safety of our elections and those that help conduct them are paramount in ensuring a smooth election process,” Taylor Kinnerup, communications director for the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, tells WIRED. “Since January of 2021, our office has increased badge security access, installed permanent barriers, and added additional cybersecurity measures based on the recommendations of law enforcement and other experts.”
The threats against election workers spiked in the wake of the 2020 election, spurred on by Donald Trump’s baseless allegations that the election was stolen. While the threats receded somewhat in between election cycles, they have picked up again in recent months.
WIRED revealed earlier this month that the Department of Homeland Security has issued a series of reports to government agencies warning about the “heightened risk” of right-wing extremists carrying out attacks around the election.
Just last week, the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force announced charges against four men for threats they made against election officials. “The fact that election workers need to be worried about their security is incomprehensible and unacceptable,” FBI director Chris Wray said in a statement about the threats.
Some of the charges relate to threats made back in 2022; as a result, election officials have been preparing for years for next week’s vote. Since the beginning of last year, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has conducted over 1,000 voluntary physical security assessments at election offices.
One of these assessments was conducted in Pennsylvania’s Luzerne County in late August, with officials from CISA and Homeland Security recommending that barriers be installed to prevent cars from ramming into the ground floor of the building housing the county’s election offices in Wilkes Barre.
“This is a measure taken to safeguard staff, the public, and the ballots,” Luzerne County manager Romilda Crocamo told local TV station WVIA earlier this month as workers installed boulders along the front of the building.
Crocamo also said the county had decided against using drop boxes because they could not adequately protect them. This week, multiple drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire in incidents police say were linked.
In addition to protecting the buildings where election staff work, some high-profile election officials have had to protect themselves.
Arizona secretary of state Adrian Fontes, the top election official in his state, revealed on Monday that he regularly wears a bulletproof vest after a series of threats were posted online and included his home address. In Adams County, Colorado, the county clerk and recorder Josh Zygielbaum has also been advised by local police to wear body armor after someone followed him home after a recent local election.
Zygielbaum recently told USA Today that he has taken the advice and now wears one every day. He has previously used militaristic phrases like “harden the office as a target” to describe his efforts to beef up security, which has included the installation of panic buttons under every desk
Tate Fall, Cobb County, Georgia’s election director, has also installed panic buttons that link directly to emergency services after a poll worker reported an agitated voter during this year’s presidential primary who was carrying a gun.
In some cases, new election offices have been built since the last election, including ones in California’s Los Angeles County and Durham County, North Carolina. These have been built with security in mind and feature bulletproof glass, security cameras, and doors that will open only with the right credentials.
In Los Angeles County, they are also deploying trained sniffer dogs to screen all the mail coming into election offices after a surge in letters sent to officials containing white powder, several of which have tested positive for fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that can be deadly even in small doses.
As a result, most election offices across the country have Narcan kits on hand, and officials have been trained on how to administer the drug in the case of an accidental opioid overdose. Taking things a step further, in Durham County’s new election office, they have constructed a dedicated mail-sorting room that features a separate exhaust system to prevent potentially hazardous substances contaminating the rest of the office.
“Election workers now need to be experts in security, cybersecurity, public health, and public relations, while handling drastically more information requests and recounts,” Adam Hinds, former Massachusetts state senator and current CEO of the nonprofit Edward M. Kennedy Institute, tells WIRED. “One problem is they are already stretched in terms of funding and resources. As election administration receives more attention, our election workers deserve the resources necessary.”

In anticipation of Speaker Mike Johnson heading to the U.S. southern border on Wednesday, the White House issued a statement accusing House GOPers of ducking the chance to address the issue they’ve been attacking.
“Actions speak louder than words,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement first obtained by POLITICO ahead of two days of Republican border visits. “House Republicans’ anti-border security record is defined by attempting to cut Customs and Border Protection personnel, opposing President Biden’s record-breaking border security funding, and refusing to take up the President’s supplemental funding request.”
Republicans have been critical of Biden’s handling of the southern border since the beginning of his term, often saying he’s downplayed, neglected or worsened a historic migrant influx through Mexico. They are now aiming to make the border a key 2024 election issue and place responsibility for the increase in migrants at the president’s feet.
My 2024 prediction is that we will see the Inflation Reduction Act 2.0 this year for the border. They'll call it the Border Security Plan. The BS Plan will provide subsidies for electric car chargers and dog washing stations in Vermont or something and not mention the southern border once in 400+ pages. The Dems will campaign on how much money they put into their Border Security Plan and complain that no Republicans voted for the BS.

Why Are Seers Always Cursed? (2)
Wesley Weston is a son of Apollo with the rare gift of prophecy.
Written for @crossoverdanuary Week 2024, Day 3: Percy Jackson | Lake
This takes place shortly before Annabeth, Luke, and Thalia arrive at Camp Half-Blood, and while Wes is still in middle school, meaning it's set before the primary canon events of both series. You can also read it on AO3.
Chapter 2: Camp Orientation
Previous | Next
[No Warnings Apply]
New York City was nothing like Amity Park. If Wes thought the buildings back home were pretty tall, the skyscrapers here were gargantuan. He was half worried they'd fall over at that height, like a Jenga tower. It smelled worse than Amity Park too. Maybe it was just because of the steadily increasing heat, but the place smelled like sweat and garbage.
"Come on Wesley, no time to waste," Melvin said, ushering him onto the shuttle out of the airport.
"I told you, it's just Wes," he repeated for probably the sixth time. "So how far is this Camp Half-Blood place, anyway?"
The two of them had had the chance to talk on their flight, and Melvin had explained everything. Wes hadn't wanted to believe it at first, but after listening for a while, it started to make sense.
"You mean Apollo wasn't a stage name?" Wes had asked. "That was the real, actual Apollo? No way, that's ridiculous."
"When he sent a message to camp asking for a searcher to go get you, he said that you had inherited the gift of prophecy," Melvin had said. "Haven't you ever felt or seen things before they happened? Had dreams or visions that ended up being true?"
Wes' mind had instantly gone to how he'd known that his mother was going to meet Apollo again. But then he'd started to remember other things. That time his dad had gotten fired, and he'd used his saved-up allowance to buy a consolation cake on the way home from school, even though he couldn't have known until he got home and his dad told them about it. Somehow, he'd just known that something bad had happened and his dad would need a pick-me-up.
He'd thought about how he always somehow knew when there would be a pop-quiz at school. Even about how, when he was little, he never lost a game of Guess Who. How he hadn't been surprised when he'd learned his dad wasn't really his dad, how he'd almost been expecting the news. He'd known when Easton's college acceptance letter came in the mail, and when Kyle was going to eat it and break his arm during a skateboarding competition.
All this time, Wes had attributed it to coincidence, or lucky guesses, but... could it really be prophetic knowledge?
"I can see by your expression you know exactly what I'm talking about," Melvin had said. "But prophecy is a rare and highly coveted ability. Honestly, Apollo should have called us to pick you up years ago. You're just lucky you never made the connection before, because if you knew, they'd be able to smell it on you."
"They?"
"Monsters," Melvin had clarified. "The ones from the Greek myths, harpies, cyclopes, basilisks, all them. They're all real. A demigod with the gift of prophecy like you is in even more danger than most. I mean, any demigod is in danger of being attacked and killed by monsters, but you? You they might keep alive as a prisoner, using you for your ability, and that's arguably worse."
Wes had swallowed, suddenly a bundle of nerves.
"Don't worry, though, once we get to camp, you'll be fine," Melvin had said. "There, you'll learn how to fight and protect yourself, and you'll be protected, too."
"Right...."
Wes was jumpy as they took the shuttle to the city and then the bus to Long Island. After Melvin had explained the mist to him, he looked at everything and everyone like they might be out to get him. He'd never been so paranoid in his life. But him being a demigod explained more than just his apparent precognition.
Back when he was in grade school, he could have sworn on his life that their neighbor's huge quote-unquote "dog" was not a normal dog. It's eyes glowed sometimes, and out of the corner of his eye it always looked to have horns, but they would disappear when he looked directly at it. It always growled at him when he passed, and one day, he took the long way home and snuck in through the back door because he somehow knew that if he took his usual route that dog was going to attack him.
The day after that, the neighbor took her dog and moved out suddenly. He never saw either of them again.
How many other monster-dogs and monster-people had he missed because he didn't know he should look for them? How many times had he narrowly avoided death because he had a gut feeling that made him take a different route home or fake sick to get out of school?
"Stop that," Melvin whispered.
"Huh?"
"It's good to be vigilant, but if you assume everyone is a monster, you'll drive yourself crazy," he clarified. "Our stop's coming up, and from there is a bit of a walk, but it's usually pretty quiet. Just try to stay calm. We're in the home stretch."
Right.
Trying to stay calm failed spectacularly. Wes spent the whole walk from the bus stop to the camp more anxious than he'd ever been. He felt like every shadow, and even the wind blowing through the trees was going to come after him. Melvin was right. It was driving him crazy.
"You know, this is going really smoothly," Melvin said after a while. "I mean, I said the walk would be quiet, but usually we searchers find demigods because they're being attacked or something. It's not often that a god actually comes by camp to tell us to pick up his kid and gives us an exact address.
"Of course, it's not often a demigod inherits the gift of prophecy either. In fact, I think the last one was born in the 1890s, if I remember right. It's almost as rare as a child of Hephaestus being able to control fire. I guess I should have expected your case to be different—it was certainly better planned and scheduled. I would have expected more danger though."
Suddenly, Wes felt a hot feeling shoot through him. "Wait," he said stopping in his tracks. He looked around, scanning what he could see of the horizon. "We should go a different way."
"Why? Did you see something?"
"No I felt..." Wes suddenly felt silly again. There was no reason to change course because of a feeling. Then again... he did supposedly have the gift of prophecy. Maybe it wasn't just a feeling after all. "I felt like I was standing next to a bonfire for a second. I think if we keep going this way, we'll get burned."
"It could be more dangerous if we stray from the path but... who am I to argue with a seer," Melvin said. "We'll go this way."
With that, Melvin led him just past the trees that lined the road. After about thirty minutes, they heard a distant roar in the direction the road would have been, and Melvin stopped to smell the air.
"Definitely a monster," he said.
A plume of fire shot into the sky.
"A drakon, I think. It would have been bad if we'd run into it." He looked down at Wes, a little incredulously. "I'll be damned. Did you know?"
"Not exactly," Wes said. "Like I told you, I felt fire, and a strong sense that it was related to the direction we were headed. That's all."
"I guess that's all we needed," Melvin said. "Huh...." The look he fixed Wes with next was curious, almost hungry. It made the redhead squirm. "Anyway, camp's not much farther now. If the drakon's heading that way, we should warn them."
A few minutes more, and they reached the crest of a hill.
In the valley on the other side was a summer camp. Wes could see an amphitheater, a large blue farmhouse with a wraparound porch, a cluster of maybe a dozen cabins, give or take, and a little ways away a place with about a dozen long, white picnic tables. Campers ranging from about seven-or-eight to their late teens were scattered about doing an odd mix of normal camp activities and intense-looking combat training.
"Welcome to Camp Half-Blood," Melvin said brightly. "Come on, we should warn Chiron about the drakon."
Melvin led Wes down to the blue farmhouse, where he met the camp director, Mr. D, and a centaur named Chiron, who apparently was the actual camp director. Melvin quickly introduced Wes to both of them as the child of Apollo who could see the future, and then told them about the drakon they'd avoided on their way there.
"Thank you, Mr. Barkley, I'll take him from here," Chiron said, and he led Wes toward the cabins.
"Another one for cabin eleven?" A wiry-looking girl of about sixteen asked.
"Sorry, Robin, this one's been claimed by Apollo already," Chiron told her. Then he looked back at Wes. "Robin is the head counselor of the Hermes Cabin. Since Hermes is the god of travelers, that's where campers who haven't been claimed, or who were claimed by a god other than the twelve Olympians stay. We know who your godly parent is, so you'll be staying in cabin seven, the Apollo Cabin, along with the other children of Apollo.
"Apollo's head counselor, Archer, will show you around camp," he finished as he stopped in front of a cabin with the number seven hanging over the door. "Now, please excuse me, I must inform the Ares Cabin of the potential threat."
Wes waited for him to leave before knocking on the cabin door.
"If that's you, Robin, fuck off!" a voice called from inside.
"It's not!" Wes called back awkwardly.
A few seconds later, a boy about the same age as Kyle answered the door. He was about average height and build with brown skin and dark brown hair tied back into a short ponytail.
"Who're you?" he asked.
"Uh... I'm Wes Weston," Wes answered. "Chiron told me to come here."
"You're a son of Apollo?"
"I guess."
"Archer Gutierrez," he introduced. "I'm head of the Apollo Cabin, nice to meet you. Sorry about the language. Come on in."
Inside, there were bunk beds on either side with a cot in the middle of the cabin for some reason. It smelled of clean linen and dried sage. Rough wooden beams ribbed the ceiling and the white plaster walls were mostly bare, except for a few hooks, even though there were paintings and wall hangings all over the floor.
"Sorry, Robin keeps breaking in and taking everything off the walls for literally no reason," Archer explained. "We have set so many traps and stuff to stop her, but she keeps getting past them somehow. Either we're gonna have to escalate to putting in landmines like the Ares Cabin, or just stop hanging stuff on the walls altogether, because this is ridiculous. I mean it's basically harmless, but it's super annoying. Can you put that bow back up over there?"
"Are the Apollo and Hermes cabins, like, rivals or something?" Wes asked, lifting an intricately carved bow off the floor and resting it on a set of hooks Archer had pointed to.
"No, not really," he replied. "It's just Robin. I think she's still pissed that I broke up with her a couple months ago. She said she was cool with it, but she still keeps breaking into cabin seven to make a mess, so I don't know."
"Weren't you in school a couple months ago?" Wes asked. "I thought this was just a summer camp?"
"Some of us stay here year round, if we don't have anywhere else to go, or if we don't want to go," Archer answered with a shrug.
The two of them finished hanging everything back up in relative silence, broken up only by Archer's humming and Wes occasionally asking where something was supposed to go. Once they were done, Archer took him out for the grand tour. The cabins, the dining pavilion, the camp store, the forge, the amphitheater, the arts and crafts room, the archery range, the music classroom, the infirmary, the arena.
He mostly focused on the places where Apollo campers tended to hang out, unsurprisingly. Apparently Wes would be expected to help out in the infirmary sometimes, since Apollo was the god of medicine, even though the most Wes knew about medicine came from Kyle bribing him to help patch up skateboarding injuries before their dad found out.
It seemed the camp and camp activities were pretty much completely divided based on godly parent. In the dining pavilion, they had to sit at their godly parent's table, and weren't allowed to sit at someone else's. They did camp activities in groups with other people who shared their godly parent. They weren't allowed to enter cabins that weren't their own—though obviously that didn't stop Robin. The way Archer explained it made it sound like these rules were pretty strict though.
Then Wes saw something out of the corner of his eye. "Huh?"
"What? You have a question?" Archer asked.
"No, I just thought I saw... nevermind. Must've been a trick of the light." For a moment, Wes thought he saw a large pine tree at the top of the hill. But there was obviously no pine tree there.
"Come on, I'll show you the volleyball court."
"I prefer basketball."
"I'll bet you do," Archer snorted. "Apollo cabin has pick-up games from time to time. It gets pretty intense. The record for farthest score is 165 feet from the hoop."
"Really?" Wes said. "That's amazing. That's more than a full court shot. That's almost two courts."
"Everyone knows Apollo kids have the best aim. That was two year ago, though, and no one's been able to match it yet, not even the guy who did it."
Wes stopped in his tracks. The hot feeling had returned, this time on the back of his neck. He turned around and saw the camp border directly behind him.
"It's coming here," he said.
"Huh?"
"What do you guys do when a monster attacks?" he asked instead of clarifying.
"Ares cabin usually takes the front lines with the other cabins providing backup," Archer explained. "Apollo cabin grabs our bows and arrows and retreats to high ground to lay down cover fire."
"You should get ready to do that, then."
"Huh? Why?" he asked, cocking his head in confusion. "We can't know when a monster will attack until it does, so there's no point freaking out about it, ri..." he trailed off when he caught sight of the entire Ares cabin fully armed and armored and heading up the hill. "That's strange, usually they only send a few guards at a time to act as lookouts, but I haven't heard the lookouts say anything."
Just as the rest of Ares Cabin reached the top of the hill, the lookouts started to shout.
"Drakon approaching!" They screamed as loud as they could.
"How did you know?" Archer asked Wes, not moving.
"Shouldn't you get your bow?"
"Right, but this is not the end of this conversation!" He started running to tell the other Apollo campers to get ready.
As Wes looked back up to the hilltop, to the Ares campers charging down at the monster, for a moment, he saw that pine tree again, stretching up toward the heavens. Then he blinked, and it was gone. It hadn't been there in the first place.

Omg it's done it's over he's finally out of orbit jail. Stats for Fire Orbit 64!
Fresh Paint Raf used for a larger range for resonance because these dogs will just not. stay. put!! 2 oaths used. No myth, but a bigger investment in protocores. More notes to follow.

Protocores used: 2 Crit Rate deltas, 2 DMG to Weakened deltas, 1 Oath Recovery beta, 1 Oath's Strength beta Crit rate to maximize damage because a lot of it will be done outside of weakened state. Oath recovery at 17% for more wiggle room on how early/late I can use oath. Oath's Strength instead of Expedited Energy because I already knew that I wasn't going to spam active skill with this method. Fight notes: Sparing use of support skill and active skill, because more focused on positioning the dogs (Spurtail) - meaning faster charged attacks and barely any time to gather stacks. Just kept charge attacking them to squeeze together, even if it meant running around over to the other side to sandwich them. If you find a good opportunity to gather stacks, do it, and use empowered active skill ideally when the dogs are grouped up. But don't put too much focus into that. Grouping is more important. At the start of each wave, dash in towards the left of right of enemy spawns, and use resonance. This way you hit them all. It's important to hit both dogs at the start of each wave so you're not scrambling later. Used the first oath at 0:58-1:02, ideally when not shielded, but if they end up still being shielded use it anyway. The only other important time when you should be using resonance is during the last 10 seconds because that's when the second oath will be up. What I ended up doing was doing the usual holding of the shield break until those last 10 seconds to maximize oath damage - but honestly, these dogs can fly around so much that you may not have that luxury, so don't limit yourself to that. This is what the crit is for, to make your damage count whether they're shielded or not. Do your best and good luck!
2024-09-11 1:16 PM
Alternative to crit, you can increase you can keep raising ATK, but you will need to build crit eventually higher up in the orbits. It's up to you what you want to do at this point.

Ok. U asked for it….
All the odd questions for Dogmark and all the even ones for Dillion.
(You don’t have to do all of them I prommy but if you WANT TO)
OH OKAY WE'RE DOIN' THIS HUH
i'm just gonna answer these rapid-fire style because i DO want to do all of them but if i don't reign myself into one or two sentences i will probably not finish answering this until 2024. i'm also going to omit the ones that i have absolutely no idea how to answer
Dogmark:
What’s the lie your character says most often?
Even split between "it's fine" and "i don't want to talk about it"
How often do they show their genuine emotions to others versus just the audience knowing?
not very often-- not that he bottles them up intentionally, mostly that he doesn't know what to do with them. also he's been kinda sorta turning into a dog when he gets worked up, so, there's that
Can they cry on command? If so, what do they think about to make it happen?
oh hell no. he cried a lot as a kid much to the disappointment of his "boys don't cry" man's man of a dad, so now he'd be mortified to be seen crying at all as an adult, much less crying on purpose
What would you (mun) yell in the middle of a crowd to find them? What would their best friend and/or romantic partner yell?
honestly "dogmark mandog" would get his attention. i call him that all the time despite nobody in canon ever calling him that, yet he'd know exactly who's being referred to
Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive?
he wants to be gentle. he wants to be treated gently. the most he can offer is loyalty. the best he can ask for is safety.
If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?
got this one previously here, but long story short, push his buttons and make him turn into a dog
When do they fake a smile? How often?
rarely, if ever. he wears his misery on his sleeve.
What’s the most obvious difference between their behavior at home, at work, at school, with friends, and when they’re alone?
at work and with friends, he has a task or social interaction to focus on more or less keeping him from falling into an anxiety hole. when he's alone, he stops bothering to hold himself together.
What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them?
TBH IT'S THE SAME FOR BOTH.... just sayin', most people don't walk around with a pair of pointy wolfman ears and pointy dog teeth. he keeps his mouth shut and a hat over his ears in public.
What would they do if stuck in a room with the person they’ve been avoiding?
WELL the person he's been avoiding wants to find an excuse to kill him for revenge so. Sit there as still as possible hoping she won't notice him, then full anxiety attack once she does
What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it?
He used to be a big proponent of turning the other cheek to keep the peace. Recently though, he's fully embraced IF IT SUCKS HIT DA BRICKS
What do they feel guilty for that the other person(s) doesn’t / don’t even remember?
oh buddy this man has guilt spirals that operate on frequencies you couldn't even imagine. Dogmark sees shrimp guilt colors
What subject / topic do they know a lot about that’s completely useless to the direct plot?
Back before his life went to shit, he was really into repairing and restoring retro game consoles. He has long since had to abandon that hobby, but he still remembers all of the tiny ways the guts of a sega genesis can go awry
What’s the worst gift they ever received? How did they respond?
10th birthday, his uncle took him on a deer hunting trip. It was rainy, & cold, and that was the first time he ever killed anything. He didn't speak a single word for the entire rest of the trip.
How do they respond when someone doesn’t believe them?
Increasing desperation. He's not interested in misleading people, and it upsets him a lot when people take him for a liar.
When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it?
see above ^ re: All Guilt All the Time. he responds by avoiding the things he feels guilty about and/or drinking about it
How do they greet someone they dislike / hate?
A deer-in-the-headlights stare and an awkwardly mumbled "uh, hi,"
What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made?
Waking up on the forest floor, covered in blood, no memory of how he got there: "It's probably fine. I have other things to worry about"
What’s a secret they haven’t told serious romantic partners and don’t plan to tell?
his very first crush was ewan mcgregor in the phantom menace
Would they rather be invited to an event to feel included or be excluded from an event if they were not genuinely wanted there?
Oh, if he isn't wanted somewhere, he would LOVE to not know about it. Ignorance is bliss, etc etc
What phrases, pronunciations, or mannerisms did they pick up from someone / somewhere else?
He learned how to talk back and stick up for himself from his friend Pip 🥲
What do they commonly misinterpret because of their own upbringing / environment / biases? How do they respond when realizing the misunderstanding?
He grew up middle class in a predominantly white town in Wisconsin, raised by Christian parents who valued traditional gender rolls. I could write a whole essay on his internalized biases. He did an okay job unlearning a lot of that when he moved out on his own, but he also knows he's still got a ways to go
What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?
He can't articulate why, but he's always had a deep, visceral hatred for mall Santas
Who have they forgotten about that remembers them very well?
Up until extremely recently, he couldn't remember anything from his time in dogman form. There were a few survivors of those attacks who remember him very, very well.
Would they eat something they find gross to be polite?
Yeah.....
What’s a phrase they say a lot?
"fuck! i don't know!!!"
Who would / do they believe without question?
His (now ex) girlfriend, Emily. If she told him
What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate?
He really, really hates camp food. Which is really unfortunate, because that's all he really had for several years working on the forest watchtower.
What’s a simple daily activity / motion that they mess up often?
He nicks himself shaving a lot. He usually goes a little scruffy because of this.
Dillion:
How loosely or strictly do they use the word ‘friend’?
He says "my friend" like every other word, I think if he used it any more loosely it would cease to be a word
What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss?
He misses having a sparring partner who he could pay to let him win
What’s their favorite [insert anything] that they’ve never recommended to anyone before?
Oh, you simply MUST try this krill pudding, it is deLECTABLE
How loose is their use of the phrase ‘I love you’?
I.... Don't know if he's ever. Said it to anyone
What fact do they excitedly tell everyone about at every opportunity?
How handsome and great at fighting he is :) it's true, irrefutable facts
How do they put out a candle?
Sticks it under water
Who do they love truly, 100% unconditionally (if anyone)?
His party members! He truly, honestly believes in them and wants them to get what they want.
What simple activity that most people do / can do scares your character?
Swimming without GILLS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING MY FRIEND, YOU MIGHT DROWN
Did they take a cookie from the cookie jar? What kind of cookie was it?
Yes. Kelp flake flavor...
How would they respond to being fired by a good boss?
Oh, I'm terribly sorry, I believe you have made a mistake! You must have meant to fire some OTHER Sir Dillion!
What do they tell people they want? What do they actually want?
He tells people he wants to serve as someone's loyal knight. He really just wants to return to his life of comfort. He's beginning to doubt that'll ever happen.
When they make a mistake and feel bad, does the guilt differ when it’s personal versus when it’s professional?
No, it's all the same. He failed someone, and being a failure is not something he can stand being.
If they committed one petty crime / misdemeanor, what would it be? Why?
Horse theft 🐎
How do they greet someone they like / love?
A boisterous and extremely loud HELLO!!! followed by a very very firm handshake
What hobby are they good at in private, but bad at in front of others? Why?
He would literally never pass up an opportunity to look good doing something in front of someone, are you kidding
If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be?
How I Became a Royal Knight (and you can too!)
Step 1: have rich parents
What language would be easiest for them to learn? Why?
Whalesong
Because. Uh
I said so
Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re a listener, what makes them talk? If they’re a talker, what makes them listen?
He's a talker and a blatherer and a bloviator. He will actually listen when someone knocks him down a peg though. Or when he recognizes that he doesn't actually have anything to say about the situation at hand (which is becoming increasingly common)
Who would they say ‘yes’ to if invited to do something they abhorred / strongly didn’t want to do?
Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?
Honestly, the whole party, but especially Midas and Vecklan
He's not a thinker, but he's not necessarily a strike-first kinda guy. He's maybe more of a "threaten action before assessing the situation first" type
What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
Draw sword -> if drawing his sword changed nothing about the situation, evacuate
If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?
It's the same all around. Knowing that someone, literally ANYONE wants to comfort him, that's all that matters

Seahawks Strike Back and a squadron of SR-71 Blackbirds gets activated.
Navy Seahawks respond in the Red Sea and looking back on the squadron of SR-71 Blackbirds which were activated.

Mission Briefing
Happy New Year! 2024 is shaping up to be a significant year on many fronts, and 2023 certainly ended with a bang of sorts. Early in the morning hours of December 31st, the waters around the Arabian Peninsula were suddenly disrupted by a distress call. It's the containership Maersk Hangzhou, under siege for the second time in less than 24 hours. This time, the attackers are four small boats, manned by Iranian-backed Houthi forces, emerging from Yemeni territories under Houthi control.
The Maersk Hangzhou's crew, facing a dire situation, watched as these boats, armed with crew-served and small arms weapons, advanced and fired on the ship. These boats would get dangerously close, just 20 meters away, and even attempted to board the ship. In response, the ship's security team fights back, but the situation escalated rapidly.
Enter the heroes of our story: US Navy H60 Seahawk helicopters. These powerful machines, part of the USS Eisenhower and Gravely's compliment, fly to the rescue. They issue verbal warnings, but the small boats, undeterred, fire upon the helicopters. The Navy pilots and crew, trained for such moments, return fire in self-defense. Their precision and skill are undeniable as they sink three of the four boats and drive the fourth away. Remarkably, the US personnel and equipment remain unscathed.
An MH-60S Seahawk helicopter of HSC-7 landing (US Navy)
The exact H60 squadrons involved remain unconfirmed by US Central Command. However, among them were likely several helicopters from HSC 7, aka the "Dusty Dogs" of Carrier Airwing 3 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. These pilots, flying the Sierra model of the Seahawk, probably relied on the formidable .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the aircraft's starboard side.
While I normally do videos and newsletter articles about fighter planes, we need to take a moment to appreciate the Navy’s MH-60 Seahawk, which is an incredibly versatile machine and somewhat underrated. The Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk is a marvel of modern aviation technology. It's a twin-engine helicopter equipped with turboshaft engines, skillfully designed for multiple missions by the United States Navy. This impressive bird is derived from the U.S. Army's UH-60 Black Hawk and is part of the renowned Sikorsky S-70 family. What sets the Seahawk apart are its unique design tweaks – the main rotor blades can fold, and it has a hinged tail, making it a perfect fit for the confined spaces on ships.
In the vast blue expanses where the U.S. Navy sails, the H-60 airframe takes on various roles, embodied in the models SH-60B, SH-60F, HH-60H, MH-60R, and MH-60S. This helicopter is incredibly versatile, able to operate from virtually any air-capable naval vessel – be it a frigate, destroyer, cruiser, fast combat support ship, expeditionary transfer dock, amphibious assault ship, littoral combat ship, or even an aircraft carrier.
The Seahawk's mission profile is impressively diverse. It's a master of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASUW), making it a formidable foe against underwater and surface threats. For more covert operations, it excels in naval special warfare (NSW) insertion. In times of crisis, the Seahawk is a guardian angel, performing search and rescue (SAR) and combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions. It's also a lifeline for logistical support through vertical replenishment (VERTREP) and plays a crucial role in medical evacuations (MEDEVAC). All in all, the Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk is a multi-mission powerhouse, essential to the U.S. Navy's operations across the globe.
Looking ahead to 2024, given the ongoing events unfolding around the world, you can expect more mini documentaries not just on fixed wing aircraft, but helicopters like the Seahawk and other support aircraft.
This week in aviation history
1 January 1965: The Cold War is at its peak, and the United States Air Force is in dire need of a reconnaissance aircraft that can outrun and outmaneuver any threat. Enter the SR-71A, a marvel of engineering, capable of flying at speeds over Mach 3 and at altitudes above 85,000 feet.
On New Year’s Day in 1965, a significant day at Beale Air Force Base in California. On this day, the 4200th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing was activated, specifically to operate this groundbreaking aircraft. The SR-71A wasn't just a plane; it was a statement of technological prowess, capable of gathering crucial intelligence while remaining virtually untouchable by enemy defenses.
An SR-71 in flight. Note the water vapor plumes (USAF)
The wing's mission was clear: strategic reconnaissance, a vital component in the high-stakes game of the Cold War. The SR-71A's capabilities were unprecedented. It could cover vast distances incredibly fast, capturing detailed photographs of enemy territories without being detected or intercepted. This wing, with its Blackbirds, was a key player in the strategic balance between the superpowers.
Fast forward to January 25, 1966, the wing underwent a significant change, being redesignated as the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. This wasn't just a change of name; it signified an evolving and enduring role in strategic reconnaissance. The 9th Wing continued to operate the SR-71A, playing a crucial role in gathering intelligence during many Cold War flashpoints and beyond.
The SR-71A's service under these wings is a tale of technological achievement and strategic importance. It set numerous flight speed and altitude records, some of which remain unbroken. The aircraft itself became an icon, symbolizing speed, stealth, and the cutting-edge of aerial reconnaissance technology. Nearly 60 years later, the Blackbird still looks futuristic.
In case you missed it

Israel Vs Iran: Hypersonic missiles, rockets and an army of lakhs, how powerful are Israel and Iran
In such a situation, let us take a look at the military strength of Israel and Iran. Along with this, let us also try to know how much attacking and defensive power both have. After Iran's attack, all eyes are now on Israel's retaliation. It is believed that Israel's response can be very big and deadly. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard is not an option. IRCTC has called it revenge. Tehran says that the killing of civilians in Gaza is a response to the death of IGC Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in the recent attack in Lebanon. IGC said that the missile aimed to target three military bases in Tel Aviv. Iranian media said that the country used Fateh's hypersonic ballistic missile for the first time, although it is not yet clear which missile Iran used. Israel's Prime Minister vowed revenge and said that Iran has made a big mistake and will have to hide its price. At the same time, America said that it helped Israel in thwarting Iran's attack and also promised to support its ally to retaliate against Iran. Israel is another old enemy and a proxy war goes on between the two countries, but now both are increasingly directly involved. We are moving towards a confrontation, so let's take a look at the military strength of Israel and Iran. Along with this, let's also try to know what is the attacking and deficiency power of both. So first of all, let's talk about the soldiers. According to the Military Balance, 2023 report of the UK think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies, Iran has 6 lakh 10000 active soldiers, out of which 350000 are in service, 1 lakh 90 thousand in IGC, 18000 in Navy, 37000 in Air Force and 15000 in Air Defense. Iran has a reserve man of 350000. In Iran, men above 18 years of age must serve. Some exemptions are also given in this. Israel has 1 lakh 69500 active soldiers, out of which 126000 are in service, 9500 in the Navy, and 34000 in the Air Force. Israel needs four lakh 65000. No, in Israel also, most of the young men and women above the age of 18 are required to join the service for some time. There are some exemptions in this as well. Now coming to the military expenses, according to a fact sheet published by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (IPRI) in April 2024, Iran spent 10.2 874. on its defense in 2023, which is 06% more than in 2022. Brother Israel spent 27. dollars i.e. about 2281 decimal 63000 tax in 2023. Which is 24% more than in 2022. It is believed that the amount of military expenditure has increased due to the war that started in Gaza after October 7. Now let's come to the ground forces. According to The Military Balance 2023, Iran has added more than 10513 action tanks, added than 6798 arms guns, and more than 640 armed vehicles. The Air Force has 50 helicopters while the IGC has bristles helicopters. Israel has about 400 array tanks, 530 arms accoutrements, and added than 1190 armed cartage to carriage soldiers. Talking about the Air Force, the Iran Air Force has 312 combat aircraft and the IGC has 23 apart from this. The Air Force has two combat helicopters, the Air Force has 50 and the IGC has five helicopters. If someone stops Israel, then Iron Dog activates and it is known whether the rocket is being counted in a residential area or an empty field and its own. With this intelligence, it detects it. If the base also poses a threat, then the missile firing unit launches the missile to shoot it down. The launcher contains 20 interceptor missiles. 10 Iron Dog systems are deployed around Israel. It also has other systems that intercept long-range missiles. Among them is David Salim. The Baan system intercepts missiles between 40 km and 300 km. The Baan system intercepts missiles with a range of up to 24 km. And Ara has two weapons, Baan 2 and Baan 3. Now let's talk about Iran In February, Iran deployed the short-range, low-altitude Azar Kharak, which agency arrow in Persian.
It is an infrared detection system that is equipped with radar and an electro-optic system to detect and intercept targets. It can be mounted on vehicles. Iran has more than seven different air-to-air missiles. These include more than 42 long-range ones, Russian S-200, S-300, and local Power 373. More than 59 medium-range ones. USM IM 23 has 2J and 15 short-range missiles and Chinese 4 and 9 short-range missiles with 331 torque m1 with a range of more than 250 kilometers. Now let's see the missiles. Akira is a ballistic missile, especially according to the missile defense project of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), an American think tank. Iran has at least 12 different types of short-range ballistic missiles in its arsenal, ranging from the Invercargill 69 with a range of 150 kilometers to the Khurram Shahr and Sem with a range of up to 2000 kilometers. Israel has at least 12 different types of short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, ranging from the Loda with a range of 280 kilometers to the Jadir with a range of between 4800 kilometers and 6500 kilometers. And now finally, let's take a look at the nuclear power of both countries. According to the US-based Arms Control Association, Israel is estimated to have 90 nuclear weapons, while if we look at Iran, it is believed that Iran Although Iran does not have nuclear weapons, it has an advanced nuclear program and operates several nuclear facilities and research centers. However, Iran's supreme leader Ali Khan in the early 2000s issued a religious edict or a pathway banning the development of weapons, saying that Islam does not allow such weapons. However, in 1998, Iran threatened to change its nuclear policy if it saw its existence threatened.
The ongoing tension between Iran and Israel in West Asia is at its peak. Once again, a missile attack has been carried out on Israel. Iran fired around 180 ballistic missiles on Israel and targeted Israel's central areas. This missile attack by Iran is a response to the air strike carried out on Israel in Berouz. On September 27, Israel carried out an air strike in Berouz in which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrullah was killed. This long-running conflict in the Middle East has affected the global economy of countries around the world. Also, I suppose Ukraine, and Russia are causing a lot of disruptions in the market and are affecting the investment decisions which would be called the Department. Further, the Middle East conflict is a bigger downside. Supplies are in short supply because a lot of oil and a lot of fossil fuel is concentrated in the Middle East and the longer this from the cold and the broader it becomes the more dangerous it causes. To the global economy, it is very clear that this conflict has a whole range of downside risks for the global economy. The Monetary Fund has also warned that a long-term conflict could increase the supply of oil. In such a situation, along with increasing prices, there could be more tension in this global economy. Global importance is severely impacted by how the Middle East conflict intensity is. There is no one thing that today the world is interconnected. If this device can become difficult for the world, most of the world imports more crude oil from other countries to meet its needs. In such a situation, if the conflict gets prolonged, then the impact on energy supply could be seen. Due to this, oil prices may increase and there is also a risk of rising inflation. Economy: Crude oil prices would go to high levels. No way would 75 to 80% of crude oil prices increase high inflation which could impact big World Bank is finding economic quality in this way. have some pressure on India because you are in countries long would be those things after impact for a long Asian economy and the middle east economy is currently doing well but what containing long would be those things negative things for world economy the impact of Iran Israel conflict is already there if the conflict grows further then there can be challenges for global stock market I remember in the recent times and the reasons why that I would say a very very few geographical tensions the expectations that ho Israel is going to hit back around after what happened the first of October I think is counting on the minds of the traders and investors if this goes ahead then it can have a big impact on international trade and can pose a big threat to the global economy this will be seen on the global market, especially the world economies
A 'safety shield' that protects against missiles! The word Iron Dome may be the same but it is a device which has different parts. Its most important part is the radar. This radar detects all the missiles and rockets that are fired toward Israel. Once it has this information, it sends it to the control system. This control system is the link between this system. This control system collects information about the missiles and rockets being fired and sends it to the third part of the system i.e. the missile-firing units. Now what are those units, that missile firing unit, that interceptor missiles know about those incoming rockets and missiles that are being fired towards Israel and they can destroy them in the air itself? On one side is Israel's defense system which is considered to be rock solid and on the other side are Iran's first stick missiles which are considered to be the most dangerous in the Middle East. Iran is the only nuclear country that has a missile with a 2000 km range
There are ballistic and cruise missiles that have different ranges. According to Harmonics Research Services, Shahab 3 is the basis of all medium-range ballistic missiles of Iran in which liquid propellant is used. Shahab 3 can carry a warhead of 760 to 1200 kg. The latest edition of Shahab 3, Gadar, and Imad missiles are accurate up to 300 meters of the target. According to Iranian media, Tehran has used a new missile Fateh 1. Fatehabad is a hypersonic missile, that is, it travels at a speed of about 60-100 kilometers per hour, 5 times the speed of the rocket. The range of Iran's Sajal missile is two and a half thousand kilometers. The Cyber missile can strike up to 2000 kilometers. The range of Ha Qasim is 14 kilometers. Shahab 1 can strike a target 300 kilometers away. Zulfiqar can strike 700 kilometers. Shahab 3 is capable of crossing a distance of 1000 kilometers. The K-55 is the missile with the longest strike range. It can strike up to 3000 kilometers. The enmity between Iran and Israel has increased so much that both are moving towards each other. Israel has been worried about whether it is a Gaza attack or Nabi, on 7 October, Israel had already decided long before that in a public statement that it would never let Iran become a nuclear weapons state and this news coming a year ago and is still coming that Iran is very close to making an atom bomb, if not atomic fuel, but atomic fuel, but Israel has not suffered any major loss so far. It has been said to be ready for it. Due to being in constant war, Israel had understood long ago that if it has to keep itself safe in the coming times, then the enemy missiles will have to be kept away from Israeli soil, after which it has been continuously working on its missile defense system.
Iran, not Saudi Arabia, is the most powerful Muslim country in the world! Team Leader Ya Libra Us Nahi Hai Recently, he has appealed to the Muslim countries to unite against Israel. This statement has come at a time when tensions between Israel and Iran are increasing. The situation is such that the world is on the verge of a big war. In such a situation, the question arises where does Iran stand in comparison to military power and where do the other Muslim countries stand? Turkey has been ranked as the most powerful Islamic country in the ranking of the Global Five Power Index. Turkey has the eighth rank in the list of 145 countries. Its military strength includes 883000 soldiers, of which 30000 are active and 378000 are soldiers. India's neighboring country Pakistan is one number behind Turkey in this list, that is, Pakistan is the 9th most powerful and second most powerful Muslim country in the world.
Israel had been working on a pager attack for 10 years, trusted the salesgirl
A big revelation was made about the drinking water and walkie-talkie dhaba in Lebanon last month. The plan to shut down the walkie-talkies used in Lebanon on 17 September 2015 was started. The distribution of these pagers was started in 2015. The batteries of the walkie-talkies were fitted with explosive material and surveillance equipment. The report said that the pagers and Deepa which exploded in the first phase in Lebanon were made in Israel in 2022 and were quietly mixed in the Apollo supply line without the knowledge of the company. When a saleswoman convinced Hezbollah that these pager walkie-talkies were possible for surveillance, her mentors bought 5,000. An Israeli official who gave information about the details of the operation said that the woman was in touch with Hezbollah and she explained to them why the bigger pager with a bigger battery was better than the original model

Hey, to all of you who think this is a good point being made, please go read my post again. Two examples used common gender stereotypes, the context behind doing this is unsupportive conservative families who use mourning as a guilting and shaming tactic to make their kids feel bad for coming out, will have denied their kids activities based on gender stereotypes. The point being made here was the experiences being denied will be offered by friends and allies as the more supportive party in their life. Two non-gendered activities were also referenced but in comments like these they're completely ignored along with the above underlying context.
If you're wondering "well why was this response done like this?", the tags on this response were TERF and "Radical Feminist" dog whistles. This responder believes in ideology shared by Nazi's and other fascists. This person is trying to signal an attack on my account to cause harm and fill the reblogs and chat and my asks with hateful commentary to silence me or get me to kill myself and delegitimize my voice by insinuating and accusing me of sexism and misogyny. Fascists operate by engaging in smear campaigns as a way to legitimize their voice by delegitimizing the voices of opposition, rather than by debating motivations because, fun fact, the motivations of fascism is supremacy and control and not equality and freedom of expression. Please note, the ideology of so called "Radical Feminism" and "Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism" has lead to the creation of Project 2025, where-in if a Republican Presidential Candidate were to take office in November 2024, they'd attempt the criminalization of all LGBTQIA+ folk as sexual predators by giving complete control to the Standing President of the United States of America. This would force not only transgender children and youth permanently into the closet, but all LGBTQIA+ folk or face criminal charges. This would force a lot of queer youth to commit acts of self-harm and or suicide, as well as increase hostility towards anyone who is or percieved to be queer.
This is not a good person making a well-meaning callout post. This is a fascist that wants queer folk to conform or die. They've been blocked, and if you believe in mental health and safety as well as civil liberties for all, I'd encourage you to do the same.
Unfriendly reminder that while you're busy mourning the loss of your childs old gender, claiming you need to mourn the death of your son/daughter, there's a group of boys/girls/enbies scrambling to take your kid clothes shopping, snatching up the chance to take those "first" experiences from you forever. Your sons first fishing trip is gonna be with his best bros, your daughters first makeover is going to be with her girl friends, your kids first camping trip out as themselves is gonna be with the besties. Good luck getting those bonding experiences back. While you're busy trying to guilt-trip your kid with your weird manufactured parental trauma, there's a whole community ready to take your place as the better family.
Your loss, someone elses gain.

Gaza prisoners describe 'horrific' abuse in Israel's Ofer jail
New Post has been published on https://sa7ab.info/2024/08/06/gaza-prisoners-describe-horrific-abuse-in-israels-ofer-jail/
Gaza prisoners describe 'horrific' abuse in Israel's Ofer jail
Palestinians detained in Gaza and taken to Israel’s Ofer prison have described abuse and severe torture at the hands of prison authorities, including broken bones and critical wounds.
Testimonies from prisoners were collected and published by the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, which focuses on the welfare of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
The commission’s lawyer visited the detainees, where they recounted how they were stripped off from their clothes, beaten and blindfolded.
The prisoners who spoke to the commission were identified as Mohammed Jamous, 44, Fadi Ayad, 38, and Fadi Howaydi, 38.
The men said they were taken from Gaza in military vehicles where they faced degrading verbal abuse and torture. They said that the conditions and violations they faced in the facilities where they were held were “horrific”.
A report from the commission details various forms of systematic abuse, including the use of attack dogs, tear gas and pepper spray in cells.
Some of the detainees who spoke to the commission said they lost consciousness multiple times after beatings, and one man named Islam Sirsawi reportedly succumbed to death after being tortured.
“Our bodies are exhausted, and we have become prone to illness and injury,” one detainee said. “No medical treatment or medication is provided. Despite these dire conditions, we cling to the hope of returning to our families alive.”
The testimonies come amid increasing reports of horrific torture and abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails, leading in many cases to their deaths.
A report published last week by the UN Human Rights Office said that 53 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons and facilities since the beginning of the Gaza war last October, including 36 at the notorious Sde Teiman facility in southern Israel.
On Thursday, Gaza’s Ministry of Prisoners and Freed Prisoners said that Omar Abdul Aziz Junaid, 26, died in Israeli prison after being subjected to interrogation and severe torture. Junaid was detained along with his brother Yasser from their home in Jabalia in December.
Since then, the prisoner group said, his whereabouts were unknown.
However, Israeli rights group HaMoked later informed the family that he died on 17 June. The family have demanded an official investigation into the cause of his death, emphasising he did not suffer from any illnesses or conditions prior to his death.
Since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, thousands of Palestinians have been detained and taken to unknown locations, makeshift detention centres or Israeli jails where they are subjected to torture.
Recently nine Israeli soldiers were arrested by authorities at Sde Teiman, following reports of horrific sexual abuse of a Palestinian detainee there.
Far-right Israeli activists, including politicians and cabinet ministers later stormed the facility demanding their release.
Israel’s indiscriminate war on Gaza has killed over 39,000 Palestinians and wounded over 90,000 others, while plunging the Strip into a deep humanitarian crisis.

Combatting stress (1)
Word for Today written by Bob and Debby Gass
Friday 5th July 2024
‘You will be strong and free of fear.’ Job 11:15 NLT
When you ignore the warning signs, chronic stress can take a toll on your body. So what are some of the signals? Well for starters, your stomach churns at any form of disagreement. When you can’t find an outlet for pent-up frustration, you may resort to overeating, smoking, drinking, drugs and generally abusing your body. You isolate yourself, which affects your loved ones. Debora M. Coty writes about what she terms the ‘Three Fs: outward fussing, inward fuming and chronic fatigue’. She jokes, ‘I knew it was time to address my stress issues when my growl grew louder than the dog’s, and my family tactfully suggested I get a rabies shot.’
However, it’s the signs you don’t see that can do the most damage. Cortisol, a hormone our bodies release in the grasp of stress, adds to feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness. And studies verify that, over time, stress raises your blood pressure, contributes to migraines and tension headaches, and results in plaque that leads to heart disease. Chronic stress has been observed to increase cardiovascular risk, and is connected to alcoholism, anxiety attacks, asthma, cancer, colds, depression, flu, insomnia, obesity, strokes and ulcers. And those uncontrolled crying spells you have when you’re exhausted are no coincidence; stress can activate emotional outbursts.
If this describes you, take action! Rearrange your priorities, slow down, take control of your life and turn to God. When you ‘prepare your heart and lift up your hands to him in prayer…You will be strong and free of fear’ (Job 11:13, 15 NLT).

Data shows dogs are a danger to letter carriers in D-FW
For at least 86 years, The Dallas Morning News has printed a similar story.
In 1938, the paper reported a superintendent of a post office wanted mail service suspended at homes with vicious dogs.
Two or three United State Postal Service letter carriers were bitten each week, he said.
He cited an instance where a letter carrier had died from a dog bite-induced infection to support his argument.
In 1967, The News spoke to Don R. Antoniello, who held the “dubious distinction” of being the 84th letter carrier who was attacked or bitten in Dallas in the past year.
From July 1974 to June 1975, the paper reported 61 mail carriers were bitten.
In 1982, a dog bit letter carrier Kathy Delmar, and her story earned a spot on the first page of the Metro section.
In 1995, dogs bit post workers Vangie Navarro and Don Doherty. In 1997, an unidentified Fort Worth letter carrier.
The pages of The News in the 2000s and the 2010s recount similar anecdotes.
But data from 2023 shows that after all these years, parts of North Texas continue to face the same issue.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area was one of the most dangerous in the state for letter carriers when it came to dog attacks last year, according to the USPS.
Dallas had the second-most dog attacks or bites on letter carriers in the state, and Fort Worth ranked fourth.
The cities had 39 and 23 attacks or bites, respectively.
“That’s their main threat … ever since the existence of a letter carrier. It hasn’t changed,” said Kimetra Lewis, president of the Dallas branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “Now, and we have to be more aware of other things, but dog bites are just like No. 1.”
In early June, the USPS held their 2024 National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign.
The postal service holds a similar campaign every year to educate dog owners and promote safe interactions between dogs and postal workers, said Lecia Hall, a USPS strategic communications specialist in Plano.
“Dog owners can help protect the carriers,” Hall said. “Our [campaign] for this year was, ‘Don’t let your dog bite the hand that serves you,’ you know, and the letter carriers are the people that are out there serving the customers.”
In 2023, there were more than 5,800 dog attacks on postal workers nationwide, which was an increase from the prior year.
Of these, 411 occurred in Texas.
Four cities in Texas are on the USPS’s list of the top 20 cities with the most dog attacks on letter carriers.
According to a letter to the editor written by Dallas Postmaster Daniel Reyes III, dogs bit an average of 15 letter carriers every day.
The USPS began campaigning about dog bite awareness in the mid-1980s according to a Dallas Morning News article written June 19, 1995.
About the time the campaigning started, the service counted 7,000 bites or attacks each year, the article said.
Both pet dogs and stray dogs can pose a threat, but Lewis said stray dogs are more likely to attack letter carriers.
Stray dogs are more common in certain parts of the city, such as the southern side of Dallas, Lewis said.
Letter carriers are advised to call animal control through the city’s 311 number to report stray or loose dogs.
Lewis said animal control needs to spend more time in the streets looking for stray dogs.
Marlo Clingman, the Dallas animal services marketing coordinator, said the city has 41 animal services officer positions, though five are currently vacant.
The organization uses data from phone calls, online forms and an app to set up patrols based on the volume of reports in certain areas, she said.
Animal services will then round up these dogs all at once.
In the month of May, animal services had about 7,000 calls, and they picked up 1,487 loose dogs, she said.
While Clingman did not comment on whether she thinks an increased animal service presence would lessen the number of stray dogs, she did say that people should call animal services through the city’s 311 number if they see a loose dog.
The city also has a survey about loose dogs that’s running through the end of July, she said.
While Lewis said these stray dogs pose a bigger threat to letter carriers, pet dogs can still be problematic, she said.
“I do think that the owners of the dogs are being real lax and not making sure that they’re properly contained,” Lewis said. “I’m a dog owner, so I don’t believe in a dog being on [a rope] or something tied into the backyard, but I do think that the customers need to be made more aware of making sure the dogs are contained.”
How to prevent bites, and what to do once they happen
As part of their yearly campaign, the USPS highlights measures dog owners and postal workers can take to prevent dog bites.
Owners should keep their dogs behind a fence, away from the door or in another room or on a leash, the USPS said in their news release.
Pet owners should remind children to not take mail directly from the letter carrier because the dog may view the letter carrier as a threat to the child.
If a dog does attack, letter carriers are trained to stand their ground and protect their bodies by placing something, such as their mail satchel, between their bodies and the dogs. If necessary, letter carriers will use dog repellent.
However, if a letter carrier feels their safety is at risk, they can bar delivery service to sections of a neighborhood until the dog is deemed safe. In these instances, mail will have to be picked up at the local post office.
When a dog bites a letter carrier, the postal service is obligated to pay injured workers for the 45 days following an injury if they opt for continuation of pay, Lewis said.
They can also file for federal workers compensation after suffering an injury on the job, according to Brad Parker, a Bedford attorney who has been working in personal injury law for almost 40 years.
They can also sue a third party — the dog owner — for the injury.
“One of the things that we really focus on on these cases is the fear, the sheer terror of being attacked by a dog,” Parker said.
According to the most recent information available from the Insurance Information Institute, the average cost per insurance claim for a dog bite is $64,555.
When a postal employee suffers an injury, the owner could be responsible for medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and pain and suffering for the employee, the USPS said.
“I am grateful that [the postal service does] take out the time to, you know, to talk to the letter carriers, to have safety talks, to advise them on ways to avoid being attacked and what they need to do in the event that they have they do get attacked by a dog,” Lewis said.

The Healing Power of Service Dogs for Veterans
The Healing Power of Service Dogs for Veterans http://chuckschmalzried.net/the-healing-power-of-service-dogs-for-veterans/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-healing-power-of-service-dogs-for-veterans The bond between humans and dogs is special, marked by loyalty, companionship, and an unspoken understanding. For veterans dealing with the physical and emotional challenges that often accompany military service, service dogs have emerged as powerful allies in the journey toward healing and recovery. Companionship and Emotional Support: Service dogs provide constant companionship, offering a unique form of emotional support for veterans navigating the complexities of civilian life after service. The unconditional love and non-judgmental presence of these canine companions can significantly alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Assistance with Physical Challenges: For veterans with physical disabilities, service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks that enhance independence and mobility. From retrieving items to opening doors and providing stability while walking, these dogs become invaluable partners, helping veterans regain a sense of autonomy in their daily lives. Alleviating Symptoms of PTSD: Post-traumatic stress disorder can manifest in various ways, affecting the mental and emotional well-being of veterans. Service dogs are trained to sense changes in their handler’s mood and intervene when anxiety or panic attacks occur. A trained service dog’s calming presence can interrupt the distress cycle and provide grounding during challenging moments. Navigating Social Situations: Reintegrating into civilian life can be daunting for veterans, especially in social settings. Service dogs act as social buffers, providing a source of comfort and a conversation starter. This can help veterans feel more at ease and connected to their surroundings, facilitating a smoother transition to civilian interactions. Creating Routine and Structure: The structure that comes with caring for a service dog can be therapeutic for veterans. Daily routines like feeding, grooming, and exercise provide a sense of purpose and stability. This routine is especially beneficial for veterans adjusting to civilian life, helping them establish healthy habits and a sense of normalcy. Increased Physical Activity: Service dogs require regular exercise, motivating veterans to engage in physical activity. This not only contributes to the overall well-being of the veteran but also serves as a positive outlet for stress and pent-up energy. The bond forged during walks and playtime fosters a sense of joy and connection. Improved Sleep Patterns: Sleep disturbances are common among veterans after military service. Service dogs are trained to create a safe sleep environment by providing a physical presence, mitigating nightmares, and offering security. Improved sleep quality contributes significantly to overall mental health.
