UNFAIR .: TAK

An Invader Zim Short Fic

I wrote this as a study on TAK’ s character Although she only appears in one episode, her past did have a lot more substance than many other characters.

Part of this is based on the unfinished episode: The Trial, where ZIM is convicted for his crimes against the Irken empire.

Unfair, a word TAK had learned the meaning of all too well. Unfair. She was meant to be an invader, it was rooted deep within her Irken purpose. She was supposed to bring honor to her people, to the tallest, serving the empire that had built itself up from the void-laden space that they call the universe. But life was unfair.

ZIM. It was all his fault, it always was. That faulty scum of a drone should have been eradicated the moment his very existence had caused the Horrible Painful Overload Day, halting the Irken empire’s growth for five years. He was a mistake, a parasite, a pesky flea with too much power in his hands. A virulent organism that infected everything it touched with its corrupted RNA.

ZIM. He was the reason TAK was cast aside like nothing more than a replaceable item found on the deepest shelves of an overcrowded supermarket. The stupid, inpatient trainee had blasted the power grid offline through half of Irk just to get a snack. A snack!

The purple-clad Irken had been trapped in her training cell, unable to continue her examination. She pleaded her case to the Control Brains, hoping for some kind of compassion for her unfortunate situation. But of course, Irkens are never known for their sympathy.

Janitor duty. They had discarded her complaint as if she were nothing more than a fly that was too insignificant to deal with. Seventy years on planet dirt had met her anger and hatred fester for the Irken that had caused it all.

ZIM. How come he got to become an invader? Sent to another planet far away. That was meant to be her. She wasn’t the one who messed up. Why does she have to pay for that defective product's mistakes?

Hate. A concept so simple, yet powerful enough to shape someone’s mind. After a while, the burning that represented that hate deep in her squedly-splooch froze over into an icy coldness that made her resentment turn into understanding. Life is unfair. She was better than him, she would not let her emotions get the best of her.

TAK will show ZIM what a true Invader is supposed to be. Just wait ZIM, you’re about to witness the entirety of what you wished to be, but never will.

The world is unfair, ZIM didn’t choose a defective PAK. The universe had chosen him to fail from the start.

1. how many works do you have on ao3?

2. what's your total ao3 word count?

AO3 informs me it's 244,098, which feels like SO much and yet almost nothing based on the time I have theoretically been writing.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

Gonna call out ones where I've written more than a single fic and where I feel it is at least somewhat likely I'll return and write more: Animorphs, Naruto, Blade of the Immortal, and Shingeki no Kyojin, but there's loads of one-offs and smaller fandoms there too. I'd like to write more Gravity Falls, as well.

4. what are your top five fics by kudos?

With All Brightness (Lilo & Stitch), The Girl In The Water (Spirited Away), beauty, her artificers (Greek mythology), I've got Four Voices on the Line (the only one I hear is mine) (Animorphs), and love what you see in the mirror (TWEWY). Perhaps significantly, four of these were written for Yuletide, and one was written as a new year's resolution treat, so also for Yuletide.

5. do you respond to comments?

Yes, I try to.

6. what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Ummm. Hmm. One of my friends once told me my fics were "gloomy" but I have a hard time calling out the angstiest ending. 😂Maybe it's Preludes (Naruto), a Kakuzu/Madara fic with Hashirama dying nearby? Or maybe it's On Moths (BOTI), a fic about Makie dying of tuberculosis back when it seemed like that might happen.

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

With All Brightness (Lilo & Stitch) is so fluffy I think it has to be it.

8. do you get hate on fics?

I never have! Touch wood

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

Yes! I write the kind that feels right for the characters to me. I like smut as character study and I like insane mindfucks and fucking as another manifestation of a battle of wills between characters.

10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you've written?

Like, a little drabble of one back in high school, Invader Zim/Kingdom Hearts lol. I really respect authors who can do a compelling crossover, but I don't feel like I'm that good tbh! Crossovers I want: Machineries of Empire/She-Ra (I need to see Kujen and Horde Prime go toe to toe), Gravity Falls/Attack on Titan (Hange and Bill Cipher being buds), Revolutionary Girl Utena/Narnia (ANTHY IN NARNIA. THE PROBLEM OF ANTHY)

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

I had a fic's framing device lifted! It was like. Not a songfic but a poem fic. It was that Monday's Child poem, and I had a line of the poem and then a short bit of writing after each line. Someone commented telling me they liked the Batman version more (lol), when I knew mine had come first based on publication dates. It was weird but I was a lot younger at the time and didn't really know what to say.

Nope!

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, with an ex-friend.

14. what's your all-time favorite ship?

Hmmmm I don't have an all-time favorite! I'm not so much about the shipping, though I enjoy shipfic.

15. what's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

All my currently-in-progress fics are oneshots. The WIPs that are unfinished, I know I'll never finish lolol

16. what are your writing strengths?

Uhh... (digs toe in the ground) character voice and tone? I feel like I don't know my own strengths lol. I used to get praised for beautiful imagery and having a "simple" style (though people would say this and then hastily clarify that they meant it in a good way, which tickled me) but not for a while.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

I wish I was better at snappy dialogue and twisty plot, I really admire authors who are great with plot and can write things that give the feeling of like... things going wrong in a way that makes sense, characters dealing with that in a way that makes sense? Hmm.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I think it can be handled very well or very poorly. I don't know if I myself ever would if canon didn't model doing it, or if I couldn't find someone fluent in the language to check that I wasn't butchering it.

Hmm. Hard to pick just one, but here are some both old and recent that I especially like:

quelled and quenched in leaves (Stardew Valley) - a spooky fic I had a blast working on, very well received.

🐻🌠👋🗻FRIENDS🍦💎🔪🏄LEND💞🦆🕵️😲A👊👌🤟🙌HAND🤝🧙🔎💖 (Gravity Falls) - a doofy Gravity Falls casefic centered around some pretty rare characters. I jammed as many puns and gags into this as I could and tried some new things in general while I worked on it, and I'm still proud.

Chimera (Gemini) - exchange fic written for an obscure movie, another stretch in genre and tone that I still am proud of.

A Season Under the Kandrona (Animorphs) - fic about Aldrea and her family on an alien world. I just... love Animorphs so much

long still sea (Blade of the Immortal) - fix-it fic for the ending when I really needed that, written over the course of a single day in a borderline fugue state. I wish I could call on that productivity at will lmao

Apex Legends Caregiver Headcannons Part 1

Lifeline

She lets you ride around on her DOC drone

She has a HUGE selection of colorful, fun bandaids with characters- MLP, Invader Zim, Stranger Things, Spongebob, The Owl House- she always makes sure to keep extras of your faves in a little tin labeled with your name in marker on tape

She's quick to act with booboos! And she loves to give you kisses on top of your band aids

She makes sure you're eating something- she gets the need for quick, no-nonsense fuel, so if you'd rather have healthy snacks throughout the day instead of big meals, she's okay with that- she's always got an apple on hand for you or some crackers and cheese dip. As a medic, she knows it's important to get the right nutrition, so she offers a lot of balanced snacks like little ham and cheese rollups, crackers, and grapes. She does insist on a complete breakfast to prep you two for the day.

When she has to use syringes on you, she kisses your head and counts down, then goes, "ready? There we go, now was that as bad as you thought it'd be, li'l one?"

She waits patiently on the other side of her dimensional rift for you to fling out giggling and hug her. "You found me!"

She likes to hold your hands and walk behind you, guiding you as you two walk through the void

Keeps you protected with Voices of the Void- it's not unusual for her to walk over and confront anyone being a big meanie head to you behind your back.

She will Naruto Run with you.

Loves playing Hide and Seek and often lets you win- but thinks it's important for you to lose sometimes, too. She reminds you that the most important thing is that you gave it a shot and not every match is gonna be a win.

Your mental health is a big deal to her. When there's mean voices in your head, she takes you into her lap and reminds you that, although the voices are nice and helpful sometimes, you don't always have to listen to them and they are not always right. She values making decisions somewhere between emotion and logic and always asks you what you think and how you feel about a situation because that's more important than what the voices think.

Generally stoic and monotone with everyone but you, her obvious soft spot

I used to reply to every comment, but now my replies are more sporadic. This is due to a combination of being very busy and not always having the energy to fight my social anxiety. I don't feel guilty about it, nor do I mind if others don't reply to my comments or reply after a long time -- this is a hobby, we've all got lives.

OK, I actually have strong feelings about this. Unless the fic takes place in two languages, canon does the interrupting other-language thing and you're mimicking it, or there's some other important reason (aesthetic, personal, logistical, etc.), "He informed them in Spanish that the goose had escaped" or "Leia and the space bank robber carried on a furious conversation in Huttese" works better than inserting a block of non-English dialogue into the text.

Additionally, I hate the way it looks when non-English words are italicized in description or dialogue. Thus, I don't do it. If a character routinely uses slang, terms of endearment, or other expressions not in English in canon, those are not getting italicized in my dialogue for that character. Ever!!!!

Gosh, I think it was Spirited Away... I got ff.net hate for it. I got flamed! People in the Neopets General Chat ("GC") had to counsel me.

Y'all I know why Teo takes so long to respond sometimes.

It's going to sound dumb, but hear me out,,, it's to make things feel more realistic. Like (spoiler for day 5) when he gets out of the hospital and had lunch in between each thing he eats he's gone for a bit. That's because it's supposed to feel like he's real. That way you can go about your day too and get small joys when you do get a message from him.

I know it's inconvenient but that's my current theory.

Today's( May 28th )Daily Dracula; I had so many emotions while reading. Even though it was a generally short entry, I've already read Dracula a few times before and knew what was coming. I felt upset by the language and depiction of the Romani people... And that I would make a post all on its own

But also I felt so much hope when Jonathan said that his messages would get out to Mina and to his boss

l gasped in horror and covered my mouth when the count revealed that he had intercepted the messages

This is just a reminder that I've read this book a few times before, and I knew exactly what was coming, but reading this in small pieces has given me such joy and allowed me to feel all of the tiny emotions once again that you might skip over when you're reading a novel as a long piece of literature

hi!! i saw the arc 2 art with zib and dib of shandzii’s that you posted and was curious if there was any more art from arc 1 that wasn’t posted due to spoilers? if not thats okay! i really love your fic and your writing and i look forward to reading more!

Oh goodness me there was a shit ton of art that just stayed between us and never went on Tumblr. Credit as always to the lovely and talented @shandzii. <3

I’ll give a little bit about each.

So this was during the phase when we were just kinda playing around with shit for Zib to say, and what would be fun. I think I suggested that Dib would be concerned and hence the second image. God look at this dumbass. Fucking. Feral bastard child. 

Obvi the reuniting. The cuties. Zim and Dib’s proto-outfits are seen here. They got fancier later but eh. I still think that they’re adorable. How could they not be?

Hahah Count of Monte Cristo go brrrrrr. But no joke that song was another factor in the au. I sent “every day a little death” to Shands and we gushed about the soundtrack back and forth for a solid day and a half. Good times. But Zib’s really out here trying to pull that stunt. Disgraceful. 

Ok this one. For context, Zim does not know about Dib yet. Or the mirror ig. So he just said the literal worst thing without knowing. Fun fun times. Zib’s plotting for revenge internally. Still kinda sad I never figured out where to put this in the fics, but what can you do... 

Aaaand here you can see that we initially made Zib out to be a much bigger creep than he turned out being. He got toned down thankfully. Still love that fucking dress though. Top tier. 

Pretty self explanatory. Look at these precious boys. Little enemies. Zim picked up his potty mouth from Red and you can’t convince me otherwise. Come on. He’s a bad influence and we all know it. 

Ah so this was during the “Zib cursed Zim to only be able to go 10 ft or so” phase. I cut a lot of that time because I really wasn’t sure what to do there? And again Zib is just. The fucking worst here. We did keep him dolling Zim up in dark colors but just in a... different way. After the Incident™. 

Aaaaaand this. *clicks tongue* This. So... this was the art that sparked the first writing (which ended up being chapter 4 of shattered trust) and you can see the details that remained. Obviously Zim’s eyes aren’t entirely blue like that in the fic otherwise I feel like way more people would have had questions. Still. This was where it started. At least the main writing. 

He-her. Hhhhhhh. I love she... My empress.... She may or may not have an anime villainess laugh. Who can say. I can say that I’ve done some voice acting for her, and will probably post it. Eventually. 

And the beans dancing. This was before I clarified how old Dib and Zim were in A Royal Dance and we just had the idea of them falling for each other. Shand’s coloring never ceases to amaze me really. I can’t believe that we got to work together on this, and that this whole fucking thing was real. How was this real? I don’t know.

My Zim Headcanons (mostly for the comic I'm working on with BigPoop, which is basically my 'Zim', so yeah):

He doesn't blush - instead, when he becomes filled with this twisted, foreign emotion that he feels sickly and squishy from, he develops these 'bumps' in patches. They start on his neck and as they get worse, it can go to his jaw and on the front of his face [where a nose would be]. Zim doesn't do this a lot, but when he does, it's itches for him. He doesn't like it.

His antenna act as if they have a mind of their own. If he's laying in bed and snuggling with Dib (and with Dib being a huge cuddler, this happens A LOT), his antenna will 99.9% of the time wrap around Dib's scythe part of his hair. They get tangled like this, a lot.

Speaking of antenna, Zim's is used for multiple things - smelling and hearing the most. In terms of mating, though, they're also used to "mark" what's his. He can rub them against a part of his mate which will cause them to smell different. To the mate (Dib, in this case), it smells like their favorite snack (Dib says he smells donuts, which he loves churros). To others, it smells like blood - their own blood.

Zim's antenna are extremely sensitive near the base, but less so near the top. Soft touches and caresses can soothe him, cause bumps, or make him emit a throaty low-level purr. He hates when Dib touches these uninvited, since it catches him off guard.

Zim is not soft. Rarely does he get that way, too. (And when he does, it's usually just him gazing into Dib's eyes and taking everything in.) He is naturally feral, possessive, sharp, demanding, arrogant, egotistical, critical, judgmental, and emotionally stunted (just like Dib). He can be nurturing, but only if he sees it benefiting him somehow, even indirectly. In the AU, he does harbor "squishy" feelings for Dib, but he also doesn't know how to show them properly all the time.

Zim likes to be in control, with everything, at all times. He is not submissive in any way. He likes to make orders and have others follow them.

Zim is addicted to coffee. He drinks it every morning and throughout the day. He drinks it with lots of sugar and cream; the sweeter, the better. Dib thinks he has a problem. Zim sees none.

Zim knows how to clean and cook. Germs are his enemy, and this hasn't left him since that first incident. His place is usually kept neat and tidy. With cooking, he won't explain why he knows how to (he doesn't like to relive memories of that place), but damn does he make a good casserole. Dib is useless when it comes to cooking properly for himself, so Zim has to cook for him and make sure he doesn't become malnutritious.

He's shorter than Dib once Dib is older, reaching his shoulders. But don't let height fool you - he's a force to be reckoned with, and he doesn't like to be stepped on.

Call him a "pistachio" and it'll set him off, cursing you up a storm. Dib likes to do this. Dib's lucky he still has all ten fingers.

uhhh..... parody of invader zim except dib can say fuck? i don't make a lot of AUs (okay, i do, but they're mostly related to crossovers via dimensional travel, and i don't think that just the crossover itself counts as weird enough)

i don't really write romance (since i just... don't ship a lot of characters and also i have no idea how neurotypical alloromantic relationships work because my partner and i are both autistic and aspec) but... it would be pretty cute to write a philza/kristen oneshot (from dream smp), and also badass because one of them is the goddess of death

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

hm... a chosen one story, except that the prophecy was planted by the villain and isn't true. the chosen one lives their entire life being trained and living a specific way in order to fulfill the terms, but then in their "final confrontation" with the villain, the villain reveals the plot and kills them because they are like. 14 and the villain has endless more experience and strength than they do. but the chosen one has an earpiece or the rest of their friends are standing just outside the door or something like that, so everyone finds out that the villain planned all of this so that no one would try to start a revolution, and they band together and defeat the villain. it's an allegory for waiting for someone else to stand up instead of building community and using the power of a group to get a better future

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

the emotion of having to choose between an entirely unfamiliar but better future, versus the painful past that's all you've ever known (which is a theme of several of my wips, including one that is actually available to the public) is, i suppose, an experience i've had often

E: If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?

well i've. never actually finished any fics aside from a singular oneshot, and also i have no idea how most of them would end, but I guess... Children of Chaos's sequel would be a bunch of interconnected oneshots about various characters meeting or getting up to shenanigans with their alternate multiverse doubles, if i go through with the ending that i'm 60% sure i want to do

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

yes, Multiverse Glitches by UniverseGlitch was a huge influence on the tone of Children of Chaos, I love the style of crack with a more serious undertone that UniverseGlitch writes... there are various other writers that have influenced various wips, but no one else that I've specifically taken note of, except for harrish6 who is the widely credited creator of "fgod" (forced god of destruction) Error Sans. if comics count, i would say that CrayonQueen's Christmas Party AU was pretty influential in giving me my "Underswap Sans is terrifyingly adorable and adorably terrifying" agenda

A: How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]?

Children of Chaos was just... you know, they get turned into children, they are agents of chaos (though not literally Chaos-chosen, which is a thing in the fic), i was like 12 when i came up with the name but to be fair my wip-naming skills have not improved and actually might have gotten worse

oh, that's a tough one... there are a lot of characters from many different fandoms that i've seen a part of myself in, but none in particular who i'd say i identify the most with

I try and respond to every comment I get on my stories! I love interacting with people and hearing their thoughts and stuff on what I write, and the fact they they took the time to write out a comment for it deserves a little thank you at the very least! I’m eternally grateful to everyone who’s taken the time to do so because it really does keep me motivated and going (but also I’ve made so many new friends along the way)!

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiext ending?

I wouldn’t say I ever ended a fic on an angsty note(?) but as far as bittersweet, I’d go with Please Stay. It was the very first long range fic I’ve written and completed, and it’s the first in a series, and even the “angsty” ending in it would be for OCs I’ve made, not even the main ship (RIP Pietro and Emilio) lmfao.

7. Do you write crossovers?

Yes and no? Like, I write au’s so does that really count as crossover if characters from the other universe aren’t really present? Like for Homestuck, I’ve got a Skyrim au going (and another different au in the works currently which I’m stupid excited about).

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not that I can really remember? I mean I probably haven’t received hate per-say, but I’ve gotten snarky comments and stuff on one of my later works that I was like “Bro fuckin why tho?” But not specifically hate.

Gosh this is actually embarrassing, but I have plans in the future for a few stories to have stuff like that (I will say now it does not pertain to any of my Luca fics and Percy Jackson fics). Yep! Probably the most ‘out there’ one was one that I dropped pretty quickly, and IZ/PNF crossover where Dib was an exchange student at the Flynn-Fletcher house. I still like my IZ/DP one though, even though it’s probably never going to be finished either.

Discounting the ones on ffnet that I think were spamming everybody who posted in the zim tag (although ‘derping mpreg whore’ was very funny), a few, yeah, but nothing that was memorable enough to stick. Plus, does hate sent to tumblr/raiding my fic’s discord server count? Because I got a great one on tumblr the other day that accused me of being horrible for enjoying a relationship that was unhealthy in canon (something they’d know I agreed with if they actually cared to check) and said mpreg didn’t make sense. For demons. Ah, tumblr.

Yep, twice! The hilarious thing is one was in a TINY fandom (Jack Blank Adventures) and it was on ffnet, which had less than ten fics at the time. The other one I don’t even remember what fandom it was, just that at some point the thief got pissy because they were being homophobic and I was like ‘why did you like the ideas of a lesbian (which was what I identified as back then) if gays are so awful then’. That was kinda funny.

Characterization, 100%. I’m really good at dialogue, I think, and I have a lot of fun with action scenes even though I don’t write them too often.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Atmosphere, I suppose? Setting the scene can be difficult, I just kinda wanna... be in it already.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’ve only done it in Reinvention with Ceasar’s dialogue since him and Rex pepper Spanish into their speech in canon, and I’d just advise running it past a native speaker if possible.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Sonic! I was writing Sonic fic in my head years before I knew the concept of fic existed.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

I kinda have differing levels of favorites? Reflecting is probably my favorite short one, and I have a lot of affection for AIP, but I really, really like my new one (heh, new, geez it’s almost going on a year now) because it feels like it took what I learned from AIP and built on it, so the funny parts are funnier and the emotional stuff is tighter. 'This is what I get for always setting the bar,' I thought to myself. I was currently sitting in my office, burying my head under mountains of failed designs. I'm such a failure. She'd always come into my office late at night and hug me from behind, telling me about what happened that day.

"Dib finally decided to try and make friends with that one kid down the street, and Gaz beat the Wither in Minecraft—she's been prepping for a while," she had said. She'd paused, rubbing my shoulders, "Any progress so far?" I shook my head and laid it down on my cluttered desk.

"Don't worry, baby. I'm sure you'll find a breakthrough soon enough." She patted my back and reminded me to take my medicine before she went to bed. I couldn't get into bed with her. I didn't deserve to. She was doing so much while I just... Why does she like me? I'm not half the man she married.

Going into the kitchen, I saw she left out a plate of food for me. 'I'll eat it later,' I thought. I made some coffee, took my medicine, and went back to work.

He was overworking himself. This was so easy to see, even his son could see it without his glasses. (And you don't even wanna know how bad his vision is.) If he continued like this, this burnout wouldn't be temporary.

But how to make him take a break? I sighed to myself as I made the kids their breakfast. I know Gaz has some friends she was going to hang out with over the weekend... if I could convince Dib to stay at a friend's house I could definitely...relieve some tension.

Speaking of, Dib looked up at me after he finished his pancakes. "Mom, do you think I could investigate Zim at his house?" I choked on air before composing myself. "Yeah, sure! That sounds great!" He immediately set out to grab his science stuff and ran next door. One down, one to go.

A few minutes after she finished eating, I went over to my daughter. "Gaz, sweetie, you ready for me to drive you over?" She nodded and went up to her room to grab her suitcase and a bag. I drove her down to her mysterious friend's house and returned to get my tired husband (bitch me too).

"Cariño~ ¿Dónde estás~? Desayuno está listo. " He trudged into the room, goggles off, mumbling a tired "buenos días". He grabbed a cup of black coffee and sat down with a plate of the now cold pancakes. His eyes were open. I couldn't help but stare into them. It was rare to see them after all.

His eyes are why I fell in love with him. It should be a crime to constantly hide away such a beautiful thing—they were milk chocolate with hazel flecks spattered near the pupil. However, the dark circles that almost constantly accented them? Not so much. He needs to take care of himself.

"You should show your eyes more."

"What?" Oh fuck I said that out loud. I turned slightly red as he chuckled. "Well, I'll try for you, mi amor." A smile tugged gently at my lips. He lifted up the surgical mask he wore and sipped his coffee. I couldn't help but smile sadly at him.

"Well... if you'll try doing that, do you think you could do something else?" I asked cautiously. He raised a brow. "Do you think you could, now hear me out, do you think you could take a break for me?" He visibly tensed. Eyes looking anywhere but mine, it was clear that he was nervous.

"Um... about that-" I put a finger up to his lips behind the mask.

"I already know. That's why I'm asking. If you don't stop overworking-"

"But what have I done to deserve a break?" he said, voice breaking, "I haven't come up with any plans or inventions, no innovative ideas whatsoever—I haven't even been there for the kids! I don't deserve a break."

"Oh, baby~" I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down to my level. "You're trying too hard. Nothing will come if you try and force it. Clear your mind. Take a break. (Let me fuck you)." I muttered the last part under my breath, but he seemed to hear it.

I chuckled, and walked over to him.

I slowly put myself on top of his dick, groaning as it twitched inside me. I moaned out as I got closer to the base of his shaft. I bit my lip and looked up, tears threatening to spill from my eyes.

Its funny you bring that up bc I just wrote a post a few days ago talking about how I used to associate Apollo with Howl but I realized that the Apollo I personally work with is more like Haku (who also happens to be my favorite Studio Ghibli character!)
