Sonic Villains: Sweet or Shite? - Part 6: KING ARTHUR & MERLINA

There are some villains I like. And there are some villains I don’t like. But why do I feel about them the way I do? That’s where this comes in.

This is a new mini-series of mine, in which I’ll be going into slightly more detail about my thoughts on the villains in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and why I think they either work well, or fall flat (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on their designs, their personalities, and what they had to show for themselves in the game(s) they featured in. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions! I don’t bite. :>

Anyhow, for today’s installment, we’ll be fighting the knight while living life as we discuss the dark spirit of Sonic and the Black Knight, as well as the schemer behind the scenes: King Arthur & Merlina.

The Gist: Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a peaceful kingdom was threatened by the rule of a corrupted king. A young wizard named Merlina valiantly defied this monarch, the famous King Arthur, and attempted to escape the clutches of his evil army, but alas, she was cornered like a poor little lamb. In desperation, she called upon a brave and noble hero to help save her kingdom.

She got a blue hedgehog instead.

He did it guys, he did the thing, we can all go home now.

Eager to fight the villain of the week, Sonic was instead put aside by Merlina, who explained to him that as long as King Arthur had the scabbard of Excalibur in his possession, he was basically Jesus and couldn't be wounded in any meaningful way. She also explained that the king was once a noble soul, until the Lady of the Lake, Nimue, lended Excalibur to him, presumably under the belief that granting an ambitious ruler immortality and the power to pluck monsters from the underworld couldn't possibly be a terrible idea.

It was.

Luckily for Sonic, Merlina guided him to a forest where a poorly guarded sword was held, the one weapon capable of dealing some real damage to the evil king. Sonic even got a chance to make it count when Arthur himself showed up right after, but since this was still early on in the game, he fucked up so badly that Arthur and the sword itself - yes, the sword itself - were both laughing at him for his incompetence.

By the way, I hope you like desaturated cutscenes.

Nonetheless, the sword - who went by the name of Caliburn - decided to give the cocky teenager a chance in spite of his own reservations, and granted him the honorable title of Knave the Hedgehog. Sonic took issue with this title, because he didn't want to be mistaken for a fancharacter (probably). As they discussed their next course of action, Merlina waxed nihilistic poetry about flowers for some strange reason.

Because that's how nature works, silly girl.

So after a trip to the Blacksmith to get Caliburn in tip-top shape for regicide, Sonic went off to seek out Nimue in order to get an idea of what to actually do. Upon visiting her, he was asked to locate and gather the sacred swords, though he was forced to detract from his mission for the sake of saving some helpless townspeople from a cruel dragon, because that's just the kind of guy that Sonic the Hedgehog is... Just as well then that it was part of Nimue's test all along! (Just as well also that King Arthur was presumably patient enough to wait for Sonic to pass his tests instead of using that time to destroy the kingdom.)

All the while, he confronted the Knights of the Round Table, who - being the king's most trusted and most capable soldiers - did nothing other than get their asses handed to them.

Until at last, when everything that had to be done was done, Sonic and Caliburn went to the Faraway Avalon, where King Arthur himself dwelled. The battle was intense to say the least, but with a little help from the sacred swords, the Blue Blur prevailed, and the corrupted monarch who plagued the kingdom... dissipated? Like the Knights of the Underworld before him...? Well at least they got Excalibur back.

Seeking to get to the bottom of this mystery, Sonic brought it to Merlina's attention, who revealed that the King Arthur the hedgehog slayed was a fake, and that there never was a true King Arthur to begin with, as he was an illusion created by Merlina's grandfather, the great Merlin himself.

She also revealed the slightly more important fact that she's an evil bitch who used Sonic for her own gain, and proceeded to use Excalibur to give the hero a very bad time.

Holding a sword like that with her hair so close? Bitch is mad.

After some reassurance that all was not in vain, Sonic convinced the Knights of the Round Table to stop kissing the now-deceased Arthur's feet and help him save the kingdom for real. Using their sacred swords, the Knights formed a powerful barrier around the kingdom's castle, and then immediately proceeded to go right back to being useless.

Just kidding. The barrier wasn't even strong enough to amount to much. That puts the Knights' usefulness points right back to zero.

“Why do people call this our last hurrah again...?”

When Sonic finally confronted Merlina in her domain, with the understandable query of why she was such a manipulative witch, she revealed that her motives are less “cackling rapscallion” and more “morally grey”. You see, with the supposed rift between Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain, and the eventual downfall of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in general, the kingdom was doomed to suffer an undesirable fate no matter what. Seeking to fix her late grandfather's mistakes, she wanted nothing more than to create a world that would never end, for ultimate peace and prosperity... as far as she knew.

Sonic had none of it and promptly called her out on her selfish desire, but the wizard proved too much for him to handle, as evidenced by the surprisingly savage beatdown that he received immediately after. Caliburn got broke in half for his troubles, and the Knights commanded the hedgehog to get the hell out of there, but Sonic remained stubborn, as he never backs down no matter the opponent. This eventually paid off for him, as his heroic nature inexplicably summoned the power that granted him a new form: the knight in shiny gold armor, Excalibur Sonic. This was fortunately just the right amount of power necessary to defeat Merlina's final form of King Arthur 2: This Time It's Personal.

Beaten, but not outright killed, the depowered Merlina was left a broken woman. But Sonic wasn't afraid to show a bit of compassion to the wizard, as he gave her the advice that while the world may not last forever, we must live our lives to the fullest, and make the time that we do have count.

"Well yeah, that’s easy for an iconic mascot like you to say. As soon as this game is over, my career is finished. Eat shit, rodent.”

Also, Sonic turns out to be the real King Arthur. Because self-inserts are canon. Credits!

The Design: King Arthur's design is a bit on the generic side for Sonic standards, but it's decent enough for the type of villain that he is. Though you do have to wonder how he can stand upright with those gigantic shoulder pads of his.

Meanwhile, Merlina heavily resembles Shahra from Black Knight’s predecessor, as befitting of her initial role as Shahra's replacement for Black Knight, as well as making her true role all the more surprising.

“Shahra? No. I'm my own original character... Backstabbhra.”

When the latter becomes the Dark Queen, she initially settles for turning purple and gaining some fashionable feathers, before unleashing her final form which basically amounts to a collection of blue and black tentacles.

Arthur and Merlina's designs overall are... okay. Just okay.

The Personality: As someone who is more a force of nature than an actual character, King Arthur's personality amounts to saying a bunch of evil things and not much else. That's alright though, since Merlina is the true villain of this particular story, so it’s her personality that counts here.

But here's the problem... Merlina doesn't have much personality either. She spends the first half of the story taking the role of the typical assistant, and the second half whinging about how her kingdom will be ruined unless she does something about it. That is all you get with her. Yes, there is clearly meant to be more to her, as evidenced with her misguided beliefs and her relationship with her grandfather, but very little is actually done with those aspects beyond giving Sonic more things to lecture her and shout at her for.

The Execution: On paper, Merlina is a character who should be among the greatest of Sonic villains.

On paper.

But you see, while she is unique in the sense of being the rarity of a female villain AND an anti-villain in a Sonic game... there really isn't anything else going for her. Once you get past those two initial brownie points, you don't have much of real interest left. You may get a cool moment like the aforementioned beatdown of Sonic come the endgame, but you're given no reason to actually care about the person doing the deed, despite the game wanting you to do so.

“I've not been given any particular reason to do so, so no.”

There's a lot of telling with Merlina, rather than showing. She's presented as a well-intentioned extremist, but we're given no reason whatsoever to actually bother trying to see things her way, even if we would still ultimately acknowledge that what she's doing is wrong. Even Sonic himself doesn't bother considering her side of the story for a second, and while that is certainly in-character for the Blue Blur, it makes Merlina's anti-villain status - one of the very aspects that makes her unique among Sonic villains - fall flat all the more. Likewise, the only information we get about why the kingdom is destined to be doomed comes straight from Merlina's mouth, and that's it. We're never shown an example of what exactly she wants to prevent aside from vaguely alluded ruination, therefore we're given less reason to express actual interest in her motivation and goals.

Also, it must be stated: There wasn't nearly enough foreshadowing with her true intentions. Of course you don’t want to beat the player over the head to the point where they can see the twist coming from a mile away, but you still need a decent amount of build up to make a twist work, otherwise it practically comes out of nowhere. And since you don’t even need to count the hints with one hand in Merlina’s case, it does feel out of nowhere.

Overall, Merlina - and King Arthur, for that matter - are just kind of forgettable at the end of the day. Not terrible. Not outright bad. Just forgettable. And it's a huge shame, because Merlina COULD have been amazing. She had all the ingredients to stand out and be in the same tier as the likes of Eggman and Erazor. But she simply can't live up to the likes of them because there wasn't enough sufficient effort to make her truly blossom as the type of antagonist she was intended to be. There was something good going on with her, I can acknowledge and appreciate that there was something good going on with her... it just wasn't enough.

Which is kind of how I feel about Sonic and the Black Knight in general. It doesn’t do an awful lot with the things that it gets praised for. And the story as a whole - while serving as a great character analysis for Sonic himself - is just kind of boring for an actual narrative in a Sonic the Hedgehog game.

My favourite Sonic game is the one where Sonic made fun of attempted suicide.

pretty impatient, but not necessarily hot-headed. he’ll pace a rut in the floor if you keep him waiting for too long

the greasiest thing on the menu. just, any sort of fast food he’ll be on it (if that’s still a thing after the collapse) and no surprise austin’s the “what’s a salad” kind of person

sweat, mostly but he does have good hygiene so i guess whatever soap he uses? something sweet-smelling

you already know this smh but he always keeps the lights off, even when he’s working. he’s this close to needing glasses

i’ve said this before but he thinks that life should be taken by the reigns, that you make your own destiny. i don’t think he’s ever been the same since his wife left him though

25. What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them?

well i wanted to give ur boy arnie a husband so why not make him a lawyer that can get him out of all the shit he did prior to getting help right. he hasn’t changed much since i first made him but he’s a lot more endearing and charming now if i think about it

26. Who is the most important person in their life? Why? Who is the least important to them (that still has an impact and why?

his secretary, callie. she’s always keeping his shit in order and he’s thankful for that. also arnie, you know its arnie smh. and his daughter that i. still have to name

27. What kind of childhood did your character have?

decent at best? his dad was an asshole but he never really knew him, so yeah. he loves his mother though, and they got by just fine

28. What kind of nervous habits do they have? Do they stim? Do they have any kinds of addictions?

finger tapping. he’s always tapping his fingers against something, sometimes there’s a particular beat; a song he likes or something. hes very argumentative does that count as an addiction because if not im sure he smokes a whole lot

11. What are your OC’s hobbies?

Any kind of dice game! He loves collecting dice, and even crafts his own when the mood strikes him.

25. What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them?

Well, his name comes from a DW character that I like a lot haha

I wanted him to just be called ‘Rory’ but even when super ready and creating him mere minutes after the game first launched six years ago, it was too late and the name was already taken haha

So since I knew I was going to play ranger/longbow, I chose to call him Littlearrow. Of course, his backstory evolved a lot and I had all the time in the world to refine it, but he had pretty much the same personality I imagine him with now. And he looked like this:

41. What does your character do when they’re angry? Why?

He mostly keeps his sentences short, when he can’t avoid talking altogether. He’s afraid to say things he doesn’t mean (which does happen when he’s really angry), and he knows anger doesn’t help seeing things clearly so he’ll try to calm down, usually by counting something or fidgeting with his dice.

50. If your character was presented with imminent and unavoidable death/fatality, how would they react? Would they try to avoid death anyways? Would they try to make their last days count?

ooooooooooooooooooh this is a good one! Hmmm....well it kinda depends on WHY the death fatality is avoidable. If it was because she was going to die protecting her pack, she’d be grim but she’d accept it (she already has once before) and she would make every single one of those last days leading up to it count as best she could. She’d spend as much time with all those she cared about and leave them with happy memories of her for once she was gone. Now if it was for another reason like say....The ones who killed her family finding her on a mission and ambushing her and getting the upper hand on her...she’d would try her best to avoid it but in the end if it was imminent she’d accept it....but she would go down fighting, and take as many of them as she could down with her.

It really just depends like that.

25. What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them?

oh! oh ! oooooh! I’m so happy you ask this anon because I was just thinking about it the other day!

I had the general design and idea for Gracie for a very long time, and I began starting to vaguely flesh her out one day in like 6th grade to middle school while watching Teen Titans. Thats kinda what hit and kicked in the inspiration to actually make this thing this person I occasionally imagined and daydreamed into episodes into a full PERSON. But she never got fully fleshed out and made until I began watching Young Justice. THATS when she truly got her own name and life you could say. So she was originally a fan character for Young Justice, but her personality and design hasnt changed too much since those days( Unless of course you ask me what her designs were between season 1 and season 2, those differ). It took me YEARS to create her. Gracie’s always been this short, confident, kinda cocky and energetic and cheerful character. And I guess shes always had a resemblance to Dick(whether it was the Teen Titans protrayal or the Young Justice one, the appearance resemblance has been there.

Oh man I could go on about how fleshed out I made her in the Young Justice au and her ship with Dick in that universe and everything. You can ask me directly if you wanna know more about that.(I’ve got rants full of babbling about it)

37. What’s something that your character does, that other people don’t normally do?

Well...she has some more...animalistic habits that she does a bit more subconsciously. Its nothing to bad but sometimes its noticeable, like visibly perking up and sometimes tilting her head when she hears something with her heightened hearing( you can almost imagine the wolf ears on her head when she does it, which makes it pretty cute) or sniffing around the air and sometimes sniffing towards a person. Little things like that she does so casually without realizing that most humans do not do this. But thankfully its not too noticeable because she tries to do it subtly.

easy. zakari only listens to trashy generic-to-hardcore dubstep/electro stuff because he is an epic pro gamer

ill be real.... my very first actual oc (ash) was meant to be a harry potter self insert oc to use for roleplaying... that idea fell apart though so i repurposed her and made a bunch of others. creating a story for them was when i first really decided i wanted to be a writer actually. back then everyone was white, cishet, emo, could shapeshift into wolves,

i still have those few original characters though. i focus on other ones mostly but they’re still sort of The Iconic Squad im still perfecting them but theyre a lot better now and i like them a lot

35. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?

hmmmmmm well glitch comes to mind because something like this applies to him a lot ... for nearly his entire life he was forced to daydream, literally, and it took a massive toll on the state of his mind and body. it can be hard for him to tell reality apart from his thoughts. he does also worry a lot and has debilitating anxiety that makes him unable to properly function for a while at the beginning of his story. so i guess his imagination is pretty wild. but i’d say it’s more that he’s overall ruled by his past and his mental health

dreams and daydreaming and vivid imagination is very interesting to me though so its sort of a recurring theme in my characters and stories. i have a currently unnamed character who is the god of a universe in his mind and when he sleeps he’s awake in that world. so he never actually gets to rest. probably very exhausting. his good friend ginger also daydreams constantly, they nearly exist in two places at once as these daydreams serve as a portal to the nether realm

50. If your character was presented with imminent and unavoidable death/fatality, how would they react? Would they try to avoid death anyways? Would they try to make their last days count?

this question made me teehee because this is actually sort of a plot in one of my stories. don’t want to spoil anything but ... i’m going to spoil it jDSNDSNJ it will probably be forgotten by the time i get anything written

as the magician (a “servant” to a goddess, allowing him special abilities to protect his people), nox is presented with a prophecy that predicts his death. he knows this for a relatively long time before it happens but i think he just pushes it down. he struggles a lot with ... emotions, i guess, and it’s easier for him to bottle things away so that he can continue being a positive influence on his community. it’s sort of part of the job? but it got way out of hand with him, idk, he’s mad depressed and has forced himself to forget how to express that. he almost ignores the prophecy so much he’s caught off guard when the time finally comes.

it gets a lot worse when you bring his apprentice into the picture - glitch, who has more or less become dependent on him and only has nox to thank for slowly being able to recover from what happened to him. he effectively taught him how to be a real person so he idolizes him a lot. when it finally happens and glitch realizes he neglected to warn him of his death, despite knowing how much he mattered to him, that would ... sting a bit, to say the least. he completely shuts down, all healing progress seeming to be instantly lost. from beyond the grave i feel that would make nox regret his decision to keep it secret, but what else could he possibly do, yknow? there’s no way you can make everybody happy when it comes to death

i feel like this answer is definitely cheating but im all out of ideas. thank you for coming to my ted talk

1. What is your character's favourite colour?

White. Many people think Wynne's favourite colour is black or purple due to her edgyness, but no. She likes the purity of the colour white and loves how it fits with every colour and contrasts beautifully with black.

4. What kind of clothing does your character wear?

It's usually dark goth fashion when in usual days and usual mood. A corset is a must during work days. She really likes wearing lolita, or skirts in general, with the right amount of frill and length. But when she is in a very relaxing mood, she switches to pastel cottagecore dresses, and say bye bye to stiff corsets. She has two sides of fashion sense which are like sun and moon, you know. But it looks pretty on her anyway.

25. What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them?

When the first time I played the Arcana (which should be like, 3-4 years ago), I was in my goth phase, so of course I had wanted a goth character with the Main Six and others to interact and romance. My major inspiration was Raven from Teen Titans because half-demon girl with daddy issues oooooh~💜🖤

When I make characters, I first draft a good frame of them in my mind. Like, how should they look like, what they should usually wear, what are their likes and dislikes, powers and weaknesses. And then at last, I give them a name. A meaningful name which would completely sum up the character. And that's exactly how Wynne came.

And yeah! She is a fan character, but I am working on making her a multi-fandom one. For example, Wynne in Genshin Impact???? Sumeru girl??? Cryo Archon wHAT?!!

And the first time I made Wynne, she was soooooooo edgy. Even edgier than the present Wynne. At least we know Wynne does have her smiling moments, right? Well the prototype Wynne didn't smile at all. Yeah. Completely emotionless, manipulates all the elements (water, earth, fire, air) who always wears a black cloak and, just be edgy in Asra's shop. Oh! And prototype Wynne used to have blonde hair and blue eyes. Heck, her name back then was not even Wynne. It was Anaïs, and I had selected it just because it sounded cool lol. I was so stupid back then, I'm glad Wynne is what she is right now.

50. If your character was presented with imminent and unavoidable death/fatality, how would they react? Would they try to avoid death anyways? Would they try to make their last days count?

Wynne won't waste her energy to try and avoid death. If it has finally come to her door to claim her soul for real, she would obligingly give it up. So she would definitely make her last days count. Say goodbye to her family and friends, her final apologies to everyone whom she had wronged, and of course, have a last good cup of steaming tea before kissing death and succumbing into its embrace, colder than ice. A smirk was always there on her lips, until the lustre in her golden eyes finally rusted away.

Mmmm Toni’s pretty impulsive aaand I’d say she’s the biggest hothead in the Agency!

Toni likes fruity things, like strawberries and cream

Actually, I take that back, she likes various kinds of foods! Especially pizza, though :)

Honestly, I don’t think she has a least favorite food.. she likes food in general!

Cats are pretty nice ;3c

… Vanilla.

17. How do they make a living? What kind of job do they want / not want? What is their dream job? What do they think of their current job?

Toni is a vampire hunter, plain and simple. She has no other real career that she might want (other than maybe a teacher?) I dunno… she tolerates her current job!

18. What are your OC’s greatest fears? Weaknesses? Strengths?

Fears: Avoiding spoilers, I’ll say that Toni has a fear of drowning and losing loved ones!

Weaknesses: She can be extremely reckless! Ya know, rush into things without thinking about the situation first? Kinda bad!

Strengths: Very firm in her beliefs, can be bold and confident at times. She’s definitely not the strongest or smartest hunter of the Agency, but she has her moments, of course :)

19. What kind of music do they listen to? Do they have a favorite song?

She likes alternative pop, and her favorite band reflects my own actually XD Anything by Imagine Dragons!

21. What personal problems/issues do they have? Pet peeves?

Geeze… haven’t I answered this already??

I’ve probably said this multiple times but Toni wants to learn how to play the piano! Her Mom played it occasionally and so it really connects them at times :)

24. What is their outlook on life? What is their philosophy / what do they think in general about living?

Hmm Toni is so much like me when I was a teenager, and I connect with her so much while writing/rewriting so… it’s hard to see if her personality has changed over time? I’d like to think her character has MATURED but what do I know??

Anna – refrigerator: probably a lot of stuff (bought buy her mum) / bedroom floor: plants, garden plans / nightstand: book about plants, laptop, pen, notebook, a clock, glasses, tissues / garbage can: papers, empty chocolate wrapper, tissues Vik – refrigerator: old pizza, some dumplings he got from someone, yoghurt, three oranges, some leftovers from the restaurant he works at / bedroom floor: nothing / nightstand: glasses, books, phone / garbage can: he's just got rid of his garbage :p

3. What kind of student were they/would they be in high school? Remington – in high school: quite popular and liked kid, clever, very active, liked sport / at uni: nerd, quiet and a little bit too overzealous xD (Also, check this [x] where Remi is about 15 (second picture))

Remington – ok, very active child, the older he was the more conflicted he was with his father though Emilia – happy one, loving parents, a lot of freedom; she was a bit of a tomboy James – it was quite ok considering he was an orphan, raised by his aunt (that was very loving), grew up with Emilia, smart child liked by his classmates

5. Books or authors that influenced your style the most.

Uhhhh... I think maybe L Frank Baum, CS Lewis, Frank Peretti, JK Rowling, Peter S Beagle, and Richard Adams were pretty big influences on my style?

7. Favorite author.

I HATE THIS QUESTION because I have such a hard time picking one. Dangit. But uh, CS Lewis is a huge inspiration for me? As is Richard Adams? Does that count?

31. Hardest character to write.

You didn’t specify a fandom, so I’ll go with my original stuff. Blazingcoral is REALLY hard for me to write. Like, for a while I honestly wondered if something was wrong with me for struggling with her so much, but recently I saw an interview with Lee Unkrich saying that Miguel was the hardest character for him to figure out, and how the main character is always the hardest, so I feel a bit better about that now.

I think it’s like--the story hinges on that character. It’s hard to have a good story if the main character is unlikable or flat, I think? So there’s a lot of stress to make the main character good, and interesting, and have their involvement in the plot work out, and all that fun stuff.

It’s weird, you’d think that after developing a character for years and years and years you’d get the hang of them but it... doesn’t always work that way.

I’ll also add Mako to this, since in spite of RPing him for years and years, trying to put him into an actual story has basically made me realize how flat he is, so I’m in the process of reworking his character.

32. Easiest character to write.

Again, no fandom, so I’ll go original. A lot of my characters come pretty easily--Flora is one! Like, at nearly any given moment she’ll probably be doing something that’s the most amusing to her, which usually involves being a jerk to someone or something. She’s not always that way, of course, and she has depth to her other than that, but that comes weirdly easy to me too? Like, in the rough draft of ALitD’s script, she’d suddenly get character development and I’m just like “okay, cool?? uhh, keep that up??”

Cutter and Dagger also come pretty easily to me. Cutter’s a neurotic mess and basically has a lot of my own issues x10--back when he was still a fancharacter I vented through him a lot. Dagger also comes pretty easily--he’s a big fat sweetheart, and is... well... kindof an idiot. He’s a lot of traits I enjoy wrapped up into one character (same with Cutter too, but Cutter has the bonus of being really relateable to me). Cutter and Dagger bounce off of each other easily and they’re a blast to write.

53. What does writing mean to you?

Making a story exist. Getting it out of your head. Actually SEEING the thing that’s been floating nebulously around in your mind, refusing to leave you alone. Untangling the story until it makes sense, or else watch it straighten itself out as it leaves your mind and enters the page or screen. Showing it to other people. Seeing what others take away from your story--what they latch onto, what made them laugh, what made them cry, what made them think.

I have so many stories floating around my head that I can’t not write. I think I would sooner lose my mind than stop writing. I have to make them EXIST. It’s not just a hobby--it’s part of me. I’ve been a storyteller since I could talk. I’ve had stories in my head that I needed to get out. They don’t always see the light of day, but I get them out of my head, in some form or other. Drawing, writing--however it needs to be done.

No, he’s not very materialistic and hasn’t had much of a chance to collect anything anyway.

What kind of things is your OC allergic to?

As a Carlec he’s automatically incapable of eating plants or dairy without getting really, really sick if that counts.

Basically pink pygamas and a cape, that’s just how Carlec dress.

How patient is your OC? How hot-headed are they?

That depends, most of the time he’s /incredibly/ hot-headed, like murderer levels of hot-headed, but if he really, /really/ likes you he’s incredibly patient and understanding.

male. weird Carlec sexuality that most resembles a combo of bisexuality/pollyamory (i don’t know all the different sexualities and such, if there’s a name for that i’d be happy to hear it) but is basically the Carlec version of being straight. mountain/marsh Carlec :3

What foods does your OC like to eat? What are their least favorite foods?

He likes to eat beetles and large, winged insects. If you only count food he can eat safely, his least favorite food is turtle. They’re too cute to eat and he doesn’t like breaking their shells.

If your OC could have any pet, what would they choose? Why?

Probably a turtle, though an Alvean bird would also be pretty cool!

What does your OC smell like?

At the very beginning of the story: dried blood, mildew, and an odd acidic smell that builds up on Carlec when they’re unhealthy.

After a while of being outside and a nice change of clothes: dead leaves, dirt, and just a hint of blood.

How do they make a living? What kind of job do they want / not want? What is their dream job? What do they think of their current job?

Currently he doesn’t, he’s working to get his /freedom/ back, he isn’t getting paid. He wants to be a dye-maker like his mom once all of this is over, it’s been his goal since he was little. He /really/ doesn’t want anything to do with mining, he’s spent long enough trapped without sunlight and warmth, thank you very much. He also doesn’t want to be a hunter.

His current job is basically escorting an idiot and an old lady from point A to point B without them getting murdered, it’s fun when he gets to threaten people or fight wolves, but it’s mostly just walking around (at first.)

What are your OC’s greatest fears? Weaknesses? Strengths?

Hmm. the Carlec have this idea where you basically have to /earn/ having a soul, and doing stuff that makes their deity upset with them starts to slowly destroy their soul. Murder is one of the things that makes her angry, and he keeps getting put in situations where he basically /has/ to kill people. He’s terrified that by the time he dies he’ll be so far gone that he’ll just disappear. It doesn’t help that he’s almost entirely sure that if he /doesn’t/ fade away he’ll end up as some kind of ghost.

He also has a fear of deep, fast water :3

What kind of music do they listen to? Do they have a favorite song?

Carlec music is nothing like any human music i’ve ever heard, so it’s a bit hard to pick out different styles and such. He likes happy music being sung by groups, which sounds a bit like if you crossed a choir, a barbershop quartet, a bunch of purring, mewling cats, and a bunch of little birds together and had them sing pop songs.

If they came from their world to ours (if not already in our’s) how would they react? What would they do?

He’d be absolutely terrified. Our world is incredibly foreign to him and i seriously doubt people would have a very positive reaction to him. Plus, unless he ended up somewhere really warm and humid he’d likely get sick pretty quickly. He’d find some place to hide and then stay there, to scared to come out for anything but food.

What personal problems/issues do they have? Pet peeves?

Well. he just got out of prison and now has to babysit an insensitive, ignorant Alvean and a grumpy old lady, he’s convinced that he’s missing a chunk of his soul, his dad died while he was away and he didn’t have a chance to say goodbye, he’s constantly anxious and lashes out at people violently when startled, he feels incredibly uncomfortable in the center of attention but also feels like he has to be the most intimidating, loud person in a room to feel safe… the list just goes on.

He really doesn’t like being interrupted or asked stupid questions.

What kind of student were they/would they be in high school?

If the teacher was nice he’d be incredibly respectful and work very hard to do well. if they were a jerk (or he saw them as one) he’d be a rebellious little monster, seeming to do everything in his power to either get them fired or get himself kicked out of the class.

What is a random fact about your OC?

He wears his cape over his right shoulder to hide the lack of spines on his upper arm. He’s asymmetrical, something that isn’t too uncommon when Mountain and Marsh Carlec mix, but that’s still incredibly uncommon in the general population. He was teased for it as a kid and is still insecure about it.

What is their outlook on life? What is their philosophy / what do they think in general about living?

He tries to be optimistic, but a life of bad luck and being treated like garbage has kinda made that hard.

What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them?

I was bored one day and ended up coming up with a scene of a token-evil teammate finding out their mom was super sick and trying to hide their panic and sadness from their team because their merciless, sadistic reputation needs to be upheld, dang it! And i wanted to draw it. I used a random generator to get the basic idea of what the Carlec look like (slender, delicate build..same height as the average human..reddish/grayish brown skin..muted black hair..very large ears..giraffe-like spots on arms and legs..large, brown/red eyes..colorful, modest clothing.) and made a ton of potential designs for him before eventually settling on one that’s very similar to how he looks now, just with smaller ears, more spots, slightly different hair, and a slightly different face shape. I never ended up drawing that scene, but i decided to keep him anyway. His personality started out as a manipulative, sadistic, just about irredeemable monster with the redeeming qualities of “he loves his parents” and “he /eventually/ cares about his teammates.”

Who is the most important person in their life? Why? Who is the least important to them (that still has an impact and why?

His mom. After the events that caused his issues she was the only person who really stuck with him. His village decided he was possessed and thus dangerous, his dad disapproved very vocally of his decision to become a maker instead of continuing his training as a hunter, and his best friend/fiancée eventually betrayed him. His mom never stopped supporting him and believing that he could get better.

Hmm. Aggy’s weird in that once he cares about you he /doesn’t stop caring/ no matter what you do, so i don’t know if his friend can be counted here? If so, then definitely her. She was one of two actually good things in his life, then she had him sent to a human prison for murdering a pair of assassins. That place was absolutely /horrible/ and it was probably the worst thing that could’ve been done for his mental health.

If she doesn’t count, then probably the first prisoner he ended up killing while in prison. That idiot trying to kill him is what set him firmly on the path towards what he is today, if that hadn’t happened the queen probably would have had him released years ago.

What kind of childhood did your character have?

A not very nice one. Way too much being treated like some kind of monster, too much of his parents arguing about him, too many former friends avoiding him, too many injuries, and nowhere near enough support, love and guidance.

What kind of nervous habits do they have? Do they stim? Do they have any kinds of addictions?

When he’s nervous he tends to swish his tail back and forth like an angry cat, and also often bites and chews on things when they’re available.

If those count, then i suppose so? I don’t know a whole lot about the subject.

Not at the moment, but he used to have a bit of one to this special drink the Carlec have at parties. It makes people more energetic and cheerful, then incredibly tired as soon as it wears off. The Carlec have a lot of parties, so most have at least a bit of an addiction to the stuff.

If they could choose their epitaph for their grave, what would they choose?

Hmm. he’d just have somebody else chose it if he could, but if he absolutely had to choose it’d be something along the lines of “i promise i won’t haunt you guys. Probably. I’ll have to think about it.”

Do they want to get married? Why or why not? Would they ever want kids? Do they have kids? Why?

No. he’s pretty much done with romance after what happened with his Ex. there’s a chance that someone could change his mind with enough time, but it’s gonna be difficult.

He’s not sure about having kids, but he doesn’t think there’s much chance of it anyway if he never gets married.

What is their most traumatic memory/experience? What is their favorite memory?

Most traumatic memory: his entire village turning on him and his best friend in the whole world not only not defending him, but making sure he gets punished even more harshly than he would’ve otherwise.

Favorite memory: this one’s more vague, it’s stuff that happened almost every day and kinda blurred together, but it was all equally amazing as far as he’s concerned. Waking up every morning, warm and safe in his comfortable, cozy home. Spending several hours making dye with his mother and laughing with her about how it had somehow gotten all over their hands and faces while his dad went out hunting. All the little things that he had to go without for so long.

If they could have one thing in the world, what would it be?

Freedom, of course.

Would they ever kill someone? What would someone have to do to push them to kill someone? If they would kill someone, why?

Aggy’s got this thing, it happens sometimes to Carlec who’ve been through something traumatic, where he’s constantly on edge and automatically reacts to perceived threats with violence. It’s incredibly difficult to keep under control, and even when it is it often just builds up until they eventually snap and get even more violent than they would have otherwise. In serious cases the Carlec will seem more like a feral animal than a person, luckily Aggy doesn’t have it that bad but if things continue the way they have he’s gonna get there within a few years.

What social groups and activities does your character attend? What role do they like to play? What role do they actually play, usually?

He used to love helping with the music for parties, he’d play bells and sing.

How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?

His imagination is a bit caught up with imagining horrible situations he could end up in, potential escape routes for every room he enters, and stupid nicknames for everyone he meets.

What does your character want most? What do they need really badly, compulsively? What are they willing to do, to sacrifice, to obtain?

To go home and be happy. That’s his main goal at all times, ‘make sure this goes well so i can go home’, ‘save [insert person here] so i can redeem myself so i can be happy’ etc.

He needs to hurt critters and fight people and kill things. He gets super anxious all the time, and that’s the one thing he’s found that helps him calm down.

He’s willing to do a whole lot of things. He won’t hurt anyone he cares about, and he’d prefer not to die, but other than that he’s pretty much gonna do anything to get what he wants.

What’s something that your character does, that other people don’t normally do?

Well.

He eats his food raw. He kills people. He torments small creatures. There’s a lot of stuff he does that most people wouldn’t.

What would your character do with a million dollars?

Use it to try to free one of his old prison-friends and then give him whatever’s left. Carlec don’t really use money.

What is in your characters refrigerator right now? On their bedroom floor? Nightstand? Garbage can?

He’s currently homeless and has no possessions other than the clothes on his back and a knife.

Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where are they going? What do they wear? Who will they be with?

Well, if he’s free to have a night out in the first place he’s probably home, so most likely some kind of party, his party outfit, and either his team or his parents. He doesn’t have many friends :D

What does your character do when they’re angry? Why?

Attack things. Make things hurt. Cause whatever pain he can in whatever made him angry. It makes him feel somewhat better.

Does your character have any scars? Where did they get them from?

Not really, it’s hard to scratch a Carlec through their scales, and it takes a lot of damage for an injury to show through them after it’s healed. If he were human he’d have scars all over from fights, running through dense forest, falling in a river and nearly dying as a kid, etc.

What was the most offensive thing your character had ever said?

Oh, that’s hard. Aggy loves to offend people, it’s one of his favorite hobbies.

How does your character react/ accept criticism?

That depends on both what’s being criticized and how the criticism is given. It could be anything from quickly accepting it and asking for advice to /literally/ killing you.

If your character was given a slice of pineapple pizza and they HAD to eat it (or something bad would happen), how would they react? Do they even LIKE pineapple pizza?

Well. almost literally /nothing/ on pineapple pizza is edible for him, so he’d react pretty badly. Whatever this ‘something bad’ is has to be pretty bad. He’d eat it, but would clearly hate every second of it and would get really, really sick afterwards.

Your character is given a voodoo doll of themself. What do they do with it? Do they see if it actually works?

He would immediately believe it was real and quickly hide it in the safest place he can possibly find.

Can your character draw? What do they like to draw? Do they doodle?

Not really, he could probably make little stick-figures, but that’s about it.

What were their parents like? How has that affected how they are as an adult?

Evr, Aggy’s mom, was very loving, supportive and comforting, she was his mentor and primary source of advice, help and positive social interaction.

Kven, his dad, started out the same. Unfortunately Aggy becoming ‘possessed,’ deciding to be a Maker despite clearly being a natural Hunter (that’s a huge deal to a lot of Carlec), and losing his cheerful, friendly attitude kinda messed up their relationship. He was usually either angry at him or ignoring him.

He doesn’t know Rili or Tin very well, they married his mom about two years after he was kicked out.

Does your character like candy? Do they get sugar rushes? What are they like when they get a rush?

The closest thing to candy the Carlec have is this super sweet nectar that they make into drinks or soak meat in, and it’s literally made to give anybody/anything that drinks it a sugar rush. When Aggy drinks it he gets even more jumpy than usual, but also super giggly so it seems like he’s having fun?

If your character was presented with imminent and unavoidable death/fatality, how would they react? Would they try to avoid death anyways? Would they try to make their last days count?

He’d be horrified and depressed, this means that he won’t get his chance at redemption or see his family again. He’d do everything he could to both prevent/delay his death and get home as soon as possible, desperate to see Evr again and at least say goodbye.
