Something that has been bothering me since I've read Ch. 3 of Who I See Looking Back At Me is Hallucination-Sebastian. He almost feels malicious? Like he didn't necessarily before, but him being the product of a serious mental illness always painted him in a negative light (you write high functioning depression really well btw, I would know what it feels/looks like oof) but Ch. 3 made him feel almost....bad?

Like obviously yeah he's a HALLUCINATION of yer DEAD HUSBAND but idk man, the vibes were off in this one and he kinda scared me! I'm just really curious what you intend with fake Sebastian...

you're right! in chapter three he does indeed take on a more... well... malevolent aura. threatening, a little. i don't intend on taking the whole hallucination thing further ngl. it's gonna gently fade away in chapter 4. at first i wanted there to be a symbolic kind of interaction with fake sebastian before he disappears, but i think it's more realistic if he just... stops showing up lol. also i LOVE horror and i couldnt resist making him scary LMFAO like... i write fnaf fanfic, i absolutely adore all things spooky pfft. other than that though, my reasoning for turning fake sebastian into a more malicious thing is this:

our dear reader, since learning (mer) sebastian is real, has been grappling with coming to terms with him in his new body. they're trying, they're really trying, but it's difficult when they have been hallucinating him as a human for like, years. he's unfamiliar. he's unnatural. he's cold and he's hard and he smells like fish. it would throw anyone off, i think.

they really do want to accept him as he is, though. and talking to him definitely helps ofc, bc he's the same old sebastian (just a little uh, traumatized). but as a result of this guilt they feel with not being able to accept him yet, their subconscious has turned fake sebastian into this haunting thing. a reminder of what he used to be. a sort of symbol that they still have yet to truly accept him in his new body. the reader sees him and knows that they have much to sort through mentally with regards to real sebastian.

it's a slow process, but! it has been happening in fic and will get wrapped up neatly in the next chapter c:

thinking about ethersea so here's some stuff about the pcs and the end of the world that they knew. i dont know if someone else has already put this together but here's what my brain says.

amber is a continuation of the problems from the world of the past. how can she not be? she was born before the apocalypse hit--early enough that she lost everything she had, late enough that she had to figure something new out. the only thing left for her is her hatred of the blinksharks, a problem from before that has stuck around until now. she quite literally continues this cycle of worlds and gods and destruction by jumping through the portal and becoming the god of the creatures that she hated for so, so long. not even to mention the scene where she takes the place of the girl standing her ground against koda and destroying him; something something these gods made the world the way it is and they're still causing problems...that has to mean something, right?

devo is an advocate for the world that was lost. this is clearly seen in episode 35 with his discussion with tolliver; he argues against the reckless destruction of what's left for fun, and instead wants to preserve as much as possible for the generations to come after. maybe they can't really go back ever, but they can keep as much as possible, can't they? he's the voice of hope for the people who were lost. his place as the one to give the prophecy in world B is also him calling all of these people and their families to take care of themselves, to save themselves from destruction, so that at least something can survive from this world's annihilation.

zoox is the world beginning to heal. he's a copy of the people who came before, made by those same people, sure, but he's got something new. he's magic. his magic is him and the creatures living within him. he's a person made from this ocean that is everything that is left. the sea that destroyed the world in the first place is now making its own people, trying to create new life, trying to start over again. maybe things will never be the same as before, sure, but that doesn't mean we have to entirely give up, and zoox is a perfect representation of that. he has an eagerness to live and make this world a new and better place.
