“there’s a space kept in hell with your name on the seat / with a spike in the chair just to make it complete”
Have you ever had any really infected injuries? Not an injury, per se, but I've had at least one ear piercing get infected during the healing process. Shit sucks ass. Are you popular on any websites? No. What was the last song you listened to? "Savior" by SWARM. Are you considered popular at school? I wasn't. If you could host your own talk show, would you do it? No. I've got nothing interesting to talk about. If you were starving would you eat food out of a garbage can? I honestly don't know if I could with how squeamish I am about sharing food, even with family. And we're talking about sharing food that's been in the TRASH. Do you know anyone who has changed their first name? I do. Which one of your senses would you be the most devastated to lose? I THINK hearing. I hate silence, so that would just be... haunting. I want to be able to hear people's voices and other sounds. Do you know anyone who has been on life support, and survived? I have no idea. Do your parents have a strong relationship together? God no. They're divorced for a reason. Have you ever read any of Charles Darwin’s works? No. If there was such a thing as a mental health first aid kit, what would you want to be in it? Some ice cream and a Mountain Dew bc I'm an emotional eater, my "graduation" pebble from my partial hospitalization program to remember how far I've come, some cold water to run over my face (or drink), my iPod for music and phone to watch YouTube, a nice, big blanket to turn into a burrito in... that kind of stuff. If you’re in a relationship, are you happy? And if you’re single, are you looking for someone? I'm not actively searching for anyone, no. What is something that people make fun of you for? Always being on the computer. It makes me EXTREMELY self-conscious, and I really wish people would keep their mouths shut about it. Which supermarket do you like to shop at? Wal-Mart. Fuck no. Do you struggle to say ‘no’ to things you don’t want to do? YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP. Someone attractive is staring at you. What do you do? Probably just kinda smile and blush and look down/away. Are you friends with someone a lot of people dislike? *shrug* Favorite photo search engine? Tumblr for gifs, Google or Pinterest for still images, depending on what I'm looking for. Do you doggie paddle or actually swim in a pool? I'll do both, I think? It's been too long since I've swum. Ever made a snow angel? Ye-ep. Would you ever take up smoking? No. I like having operational lungs. Do you laugh at racial jokes? No. Hate to break it to ya, but they're not funny. Book series you enjoyed reading recently? I've been loving Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland, even if I'm reading very slowly. My psychiatrist has given me a new way to approach my hobbies I have difficulty engaging in, so I'm hoping if I keep it up, my rate of reading will speed up! Are there any keys on your keyboard that have letters fading away? Ahaha, yeah... "a," "s," and "d." A true gamer. How "w" is still alive, I couldn't tell ya. Favorite non-chocolate candy? Fairy lights are so cute. How many phone numbers do you have memorized? I shit you not, none. What is your third favourite colour? Hm. Maybe rose gold, or lilac. Can you remember your first phone? I mean I like to think I'm a good writer and a decent artist. Do you remember the last movie you saw while on a date? Yeah, IT with Girt. It was fun because he's a horror pansy, haha. That time fucking flies, so cherish every millisecond. Do you and your friends ever talk about your sex lives? Not really. Even when I was sexually active, I was private about that stuff. I don't care if others talk to me about theirs, but odds are I'm not saying much about myself. What were the best and worst interviews you’ve ever had? What made them so good/bad? I've never had a bad interview, but I mean, I've only had I wanna say four in my whole life. None were anything special either, though. Ever put someone else in the hospital? No. Have you ever sold anything on eBay? If so, what? No. What is the best surprise you have ever had? Finding a container of puppy chow underneath the Christmas tree one year. I guess riding a four-wheeler through the woods once with our former neighbors, who were good friends of ours.. Have you ever rode on a mobility scooter/wheelchair just for fun? Um, no? That's a jackass thing to do. Some people actually need those. Who’s the most controlling person you know? OH MY FUCKING GOD. OUR FAMILY FRIEND TOBEY. EASILY. She seizes control of EVERY situation, even if she has no right to be involved in it. Does anyone keep a photo of you in their purse/wallet, and if so, who? Not to my knowledge. Do you own a microphone? No. Do you enjoy trailers at the cinema? I do! I like arriving in time to see them. Have you ever been burgled? No, thankfully. Have you ever entered anything into Urban Dictionary? If so, what? No. What’s the last live performance you watched on TV? No idea. Have you ever been embarrassed to buy something from a shop? Not to my recollection. It helps that I'm not the one buying things, like ever. What’s the name of one of your friends’ dogs? Buster! :') He's a precious lil bean. Name a pet you definitely wouldn’t want. A GIANT CENTIPEDE. That's one pet in the invert community that I have ZERO interest in EVER owning. Those bitches are scary. Have you ever needed to wear a tie? If so, when/why? Nope.

ayy its ya girl c! i’ve done up a little draft with the slight changes that were made now that we’re living in the moden au!! please read more for ... more.
DESMOND SAYRE
monty might not love social media and technological advances but they changed his life. his family still sucked, always grasping for power and rejecting change, but at least he didn’t feel as alone... not when he could text his friends and get immediate answers back from them. not having the time to dwell and sink in self pity really helped him.
ya boy also didn’t have to live his life thinking something was wrong with him bc he wasn’t sexually attracted to people like he was supposed to. he had access to google, he learned what asexuality and the spectrum was, and he knew more about himself and didn’t have to just ... not know. i think this made him sleep around less, get to know people a bit more, and while he’s still not an open kind of guy he didn’t really date much. it did however mean he stayed with laurel way longer than he should have... put up with way more crazy than he would have in the past.
he has instagram but never posts. seriously, he has one post from a year ago. he does like things though and is always commenting on posts. sometimes nice, sometimes not. he doesn’t have facebook, twitter, youtube, or snapchat. he thinks the snapchat filters are dumb and ruin perfectly good pictures. he also hates selfies and thinks they’re dumb. why does he even have insta? it’s probably the only way to stay up to date on hogwarts gossip.
i do think because everything online can be so negative, and escalate so quickly, monty never would have came out and admitted that he was bisexual/demisexual except to the people he’s told in canon. it’s still something he plans on taking to his grave and obliviating out of anyone who knew. the gay shame is real. get a grip boy.
i think he’s definitely got the aesthetic of like... the guy with gauges in his ears, maybe he has his eyebrow pierced, and he definitely still has the nipple piercing. i think he probably has more tattoos, exclusively wears leather jackets, combat boots, and ripped jeans, and wears a lot of plain colored shirts or black shirts. he still loves black. he will always love black. he wears a lot of it.
he hasn’t appropriated a lot of muggle culture into his day to day. i feel like he only got a phone in the last year and is awful at remembering to check it. it’s probably an older model too because he didn’t care what they gave him and it’s slate grey with no case because he lives on the edge. yolo. he doesn’t have any muggle cars or anything like that but he definitely has a netflix account and television because why not. his favorite show would probably be something like the good place.
ya boy still flunked out of hogwarts because that’s just how his life goes. he’s repeating his final year and you bet ya ass people tweeted about THAT for awhile. we love vague tweeting.
PHOENIX VASQUEZ
phoenix’s childhood is still relatively the same; he was adopted by the vasquez family. however, adopting wasn’t as easy as it had been back in the day because lycanthropy wasn’t as frowned upon in this decade as it would have been before. while people didn’t love it, it wasn’t something that meant no other family was interested, or other people weren’t willing to bend red tape. which means nix didn’t move around as much as a kid because his parents were able to keep working at their jobs in the states!! they only moved to the UK when he was fifteen as his grandmother was sick. so basically he moved to and started going to hogwarts in year 5 instead of year 1.
personality wise, nix is very similar. he’s still very awkward, very quiet, and is a genuinely nice person to everyone he meets. he’s more often about his lycanthropy as his parents never begged him to keep it a secret and it’s not uncommon for him to be making werewolf jokes at his own expense. he thinks it’s funny.
technology!! nix loves snapchat. he’s not huge on technology bc he’s kind of a hipster -- he still uses ballpoint pens and notebooks, doesn’t own a computer and only has a dinky phone that texts and calls. no data. he can only use snapchat when he’s near a wifi hotspot so you’ll sometimes see him getting frustrated with his phone when it starts buffering and flopping. he DOES borrow a friend’s computer to upload podcasts though because he’s a podcaster!!! he has a podcast called ‘howlcast’ and he does reviews of mainstream media depictions of werewolves and compares them to the reality. he also interviews lycanthropy specialists, advocates, and famous lycanthropes to talk about the werewolf experience. he kind of loves it?? he puts out an episode a week and does a Q&A on twitter straight after the episode goes up for any fans of the podcast.
nix doesn’t have a luxury broom or any of those fancy toys that the rich kids usually sport. he likes his regular ‘ol magical broomstick and doesn’t think a suped up car is something that he needs in his life. he good.
modern 2018 phoenix also died his hair a bluey teal color! he thought it was fun and tbh he is living his best life.
LAUREL DIAN
laurel’s family aspire to be the kardashians. they have a b level reality show, think something on tlc so they have their little cult following that laurel l o v e s. she loves the attention and loves the perks that come with it.
her aesthetic is probably like.. forever 21 / hipster / hippe chick. she wears a lot of crop tops, high waisted skirts, floral prints, lace, etc. everything .. and i mean everything ... is accentuated with red lipstick. that’s her aesthetic x 100. she has an iphone with a bedazzled phone case and probably drives a really compact car. her broom would be luxury too and she’s definitely on tinder select looking for cute boys (or girls) to bring home with her.
as for social media.. she has her hand in a lot of different platforms. she prefers facebook over most of the other ones. she also loves pinterest and is always pinning home decor ideas, cooking ideas, etc. she’s a feminist and sjw when it comes to twitter. it’s not uncommon to see her beefing with someone on twitter because they’re trolling or being rude/racist/sexist/etc. she loves tearing people a new asshole when they decide to spread their hate online. fuck off trolly boys.
she’s been in two high profile relationships in her life. the first was with monty sayre and that was a fucking nightmare. a lot of their relationship was caught on screen and its cringey whenever people tweet her pictures of monty and his new fiancee, or share photos of the two of them from when they were together. she might have dumped him but that doesn’t mean that she wants to be reminded of it all the time
she still works with dragons and they are frequently featured on her instagram, snapchat, and on the show. some of them even have their own little cult followings. its weird but kind of beautiful,
PIPPA CARSTAIRS
pippa being born in the 2000′s is the best thing that ever happened to her. truly. britney? christina? pink? oh my god she’s living. she loves pop music, loves concerts, and has a passion for professional cheerleading bc it's a legitimate sport now y’all! it’s her dream to be a professional cheerleader. maybe in the magical world if quidditch has them now?? we just dont know.
her aesthetic is blair waldorf chic. maybe a little more revealing. she definitely still wears heels, ignores dress codes, and always has her hair straightened perfectly. she is very very good with makeup -- think contouring and all that jazz. she looks like a million bucks literlly every day. it’s incredible.
pippa has a luxury car. i’m thinking it’s probably an suv?? she definitely would want something bigger and not your typical girly girl car. i’m thinking a black cadillac escalade. she doesn’t have a broom bc she still hates flying and heights. fuck that shit. as for technology, she’s got it all -- snapchat, twitter, instagram, youtube, etc. she also definitely has a youtube channel dedicated to beauty tutorials and has thousands of dedicated viewers. she’s done everything from contouring, costume make-up, etc. her channel is especially popular around halloween as she does a special called ‘the twelve days of pippaween’ where she does different costume makeup every day for 12 days. her most popular to date is ursula from the little mermaid! she also definitely has the latest iphone, macbook, etc, and it’s probably all rose gold. she’s a rose gold girl.
currently in the middle of an instagram war with her ex boyfriend. they’re both shady as fuck with their vague posting on finstas and it’s mESSY. we love a good mess!!!!! (this good be a good wanted connection if someone wanted to be her messy ex for the AU!!)
ALARIC ROWLE
i feel like wizards having access to technology changed things significantly for rowle. he was able to track down his birth father’s parents much easier and probably moved back to the UK when he was much younger. he definitely learned more about the war and was drawn into anyone whose narrative reflected what he wanted to hear -- that his parents were martyrs and that the dark lord had been in the right the whole time.
he definitely kept dueling. when his hand acted up, i think he would have been so desperate to fix it that he would have given into muggle medicines and treatments. he probably wears a splint on his wrist and his wandwork isn’t AS quick as it could be but he’s still one of the top duelists in the country. seriously, ya boy was good. him getting to continue being awesome might make him less of a douche. maybe. he definitely competes bc glory and loves every minute of it. a rowle who is less grumpy and super cocky? we stan.
he’s definitely a reddit troll. i feel like there’s a death eaters subreddit or something and he basically lives there and talks to other death eater sympathizers, former, or whatever, and slowly await the return of the ‘great days’. think alt right but .. y’know magical.. ugly.
he still teaches dada bc initially he needed money to pay off some wicked crazy medical bills for all the specialists and acupuncture and weird shit he did to fix his hands. even with the money he earns when he’s duelling, he’s in debt up to his ears.
i think he still has the scars that marr his face though bc as much as he will use splints or salves on his hands he is not gonna fucking undergo plastic surgery in the muggle world. he’d rather choke.
ANSEM WARBECK
ansem warbeck deserves social media. he is living his best life. he is definitely the guy who is constantly using ‘find my iphone’ bc he lost it, has a cracked screen because he forgot to buy the shatterproof screen protector, and changes his netflix password weekly bc he can never remember what it was. he’s also the snapchat king. i’d say he has 100+ streaks with as many people as he can convince to keep it up and he sends angry snaps when you ruin his streaks. they’re like his babies. one time he was running a fever and still managed to make streaks. there’s no excuse.
he still works as a curse breaker but i feel like he’s really like... stepped up gringott’s social media game. i feel like he took it upon himself to get them an instagram and is always uploading picture of whatever ‘cool’ treasure they can find. griphook keeps telling him they’re going to get robbed if he doesn’t stop bragging but ansem never listens.
the warbeck family is probably one of the few that have not acclimated to the technological changes at all. they won’t have anything to do with electricity, social media, or anything of the sort and look down on people that do. so ansem with his luxury brooms and his waffle iron are basically sacreligious to his family and his mom always cries whenever he talks about these things. it’s a whole Thing and just reinforces that arson is the best and ansem is the Worst.

just pals being pals
(a twist of @gouguruheddo‘s no homo lime in this drank. this plotless fluffy one is for you, acky baby <3)
Levi sinks into the Smith’s hot tub with a carnal sigh.
Monday in government class, Erwin had told him that his parents were going away that weekend, so Levi has been looking forward to it all week. Gymnastics is his only extracurricular activity, but now that he’s on the hunt for scholarships, every meet must be his best. Despite regularly engaging in such strenuous sport, Levi is, as he answered enthusiastically in the middle of a lesson on immigration fluctuations, “always a slut for a dip in some hot water.”
Erwin sinks in with an appreciative sigh of his own. Academics is hard work, too. For a minute, they relax on adjacent edges, and then Levi makes the move into Erwin’s lap, chest to chest, short legs wrapped around Erwin’s waist for good measure.
“Rub my neck and shoulders,” Levi demands, knowing full well that he will not be denied. The first dig of Erwin’s meaty thumbs into tender deltoids causes Levi to tense, momentarily making his muscular body a visual guide, defined enough that Erwin could possibly use him to study for his upcoming anatomy and physiology exam. The next second, Levi is a smooth expanse of reddening skin again. It always amazes Erwin, the difference a little tension can make. His own body is still adjusting to his growth spurt last year, making a beanpole of him, but Levi, in his compact build, has thighs to kill a man.
Erwin rubs until Levi is figuratively boneless and boiled, and then he rubs a little lower. For relaxation. Levi’s relaxation. After a week like this, Erwin just wants to see Levi enjoy himself, and Erwin is more than happy to give. He knows his ministrations are well appreciated by the way Levi wraps his arms around Erwin’s shoulders and graces Erwin’s ears with quiet, needy whines until Levi climaxes with a sweet, slow, low croon, “Fuuuck, Erwiiin.”
Touching Levi is always a pleasure. Erwin likes the softness of his hair, the almost-smooth expanses of his skin, the noises Levi makes. Like a hidden talent, Erwin is able to encourage such sounds from Levi, moans and whimpers and bitten half-words. Usually, Levi is wound up tightly and stoic, but when they’re alone, Levi unravels so easily. Just a stroke here and there and Erwin can reduce him to a horny boy with an otherworldly appetite.
They’ve been on the couch together drinking lemonade for ten minutes when Levi loses interest in the Kardashian rerun. Without a word, Levi hops up and trots off, returns quickly with two cubes of nail polish.
“Gold or red?” Levi asks, sitting on the couch, legs criss-cross, facing his best friend.
“Red,” Erwin says. It accentuates Levi’s mouth, those full lips often drawn into their fair share of a scowls. “Gold accents, if you want.”
“Whatever you think looks good.” Levi gives him the two little cubes and then holds out his hands expectantly. Erwin takes his time and paints Levi’s nails with care, avoiding smearing the polish onto Levi’s skin. When he’s all done, Erwin brings Levi’s hands up and gently blows on them to bring the polish to set more quickly.
Levi twitches. “That tickles.”
“You say that every time.” Erwin takes a deep breath and releases it, watching the way it shifts Levi’s arm hair. “Does it still turn you on?”
Considering the fact that Erwin has Levi’s cock down his throat no more than sixty seconds later, it’s a clear answer.
Levi is a rascal in bed. He makes tangles of Erwin’s sheets and limbs, gets Erwin hard and fucks himself on Erwin’s cock while Erwin lays there with hands on Levi’s hips and “Levi!” on his lips. Ordinarily, Erwin’s parents are home so they screw like demure housewives, but tonight, they solely occupy the Smith residence; Erwin’s headboard scuffs the paint and Levi tosses his head back to better let his pleasure rumble through him, too much to contain in his body. They'd learned to fuck by fucking one another, and it shows. He knows how to wring an orgasm from Erwin about as fast as Erwin’s favourite video, a clip on his phone of Levi doing... stretches.
Just a moment later, Levi cums dry in an obscene, wailing shriek of pleasure. For a second, he’s tense all over again, every cut muscle showing, and then he melts into himself and slumps down onto Erwin, his forehead to Erwin’s chest. Levi promptly passes out. Erwin slips out from under Levi and tucks him into bed, and then goes to the kitchen to get snacks for Levi. His metabolism runs like a stallion, requires constant maintenance, and Erwin likes to pamper Levi whenever he stays over.
Erwin also likes to leave goodie bags in Levi’s locker. He marks all of Levi’s meets in his student planner and coordinates snacks depending on Levi’s needs.
“You’re, like, a great fucking boyfriend,” Levi tells him on Valentine’s Day, his locker overflowing with red and pink and white. “Always doting on me. Shit. You’re so fucking gay, Erwin.”
“So are you,” Erwin retorts playfully, pulling Levi into a tight hug and settling his chin in Levi’s hair.
“I’m not gay, I just like you,” Levi scoffs, but his hands are creeping into the pockets of Erwin’s heavily decorated letterman. A teacher shoos them apart, citing the school’s policy on public displays of affect. Levi licks a stripe up Erwin’s throat in front of the teacher before separating and heading to his class, and Erwin lets the saliva dry instead of wiping it away.
Once Erwin’s academic load lightens, he begins attending the gymnastics meets. He sits beside Ms. Ackerman in the bleachers, blanketed in the shroud of protection that her 1990 Olympics silver medal offers from the vicious parental politics.
It’s really cute to watch Levi interact with his gym mates from afar, helping adjust spandex and hairbows. He’s only the barest bit taller than the girls, and altogether, they look like a group of children as they stand on the sidelines while each competes. Levi is the only male, and so his events are vastly different from the girls’, but after a particularly impressive night, Levi takes to the equipment in the emptying gym with a scandalous glint in his eyes.
By the time Levi is done showing off, Ms. Ackerman has to politely ignore the tenting in Erwin’s jeans as they all walk out to the parking lot. She doesn’t stop Levi as he climbs into Erwin’s car even though it’s a school night, only reminds Levi that he needs to answer if she calls because it’ll be important. Ms. Ackerman never calls.
There’s glitter across Levi’s cheekbones that catches in the streetlights as Erwin drives, and his leotard shimmers under Erwin’s letterman. The first thing Levi does at the Smith’s is eat, cleans out half the leftovers as he stands at the island. Erwin keeps his glass of ice water topped off.
“I’m so fucking tired,” he whines when he drops into Erwin’s bed like it’s his own. It might as well be. Droplets of water in his hair from their shower catch in the pillows.
“Too tired to have sex?”
Levi lazily rolls his head sideways to give Erwin an unimpressed expression. “That’s a stupid ass question.”
Nevertheless, Erwin does all the work. Sucking Levi off while working a finger into his ass to massage his prostate is terribly efficient. Levi cums biting the back of his wrist because Erwin’s parents are down the hallway and like hell does he want anyone to hear him in the throes of pleasure. Erwin jacks off using Levi’s cum for lube and even though Levi voices revulsion, he still kisses Erwin deeply in their post-coital high.
Erwin gets plenty of hopeful invitations to senior prom, and to silence them, he does the most dramatic thing he can think of. Jumping up onto the table, Erwin points across the cafeteria and shouts, “Levi Ackerman, let’s go to prom!”
“You can go fuck yourself!” Levi shouts back as he ducks out, blushing all the way to his ears.
Erwin pursues, and when he catches up to Levi in the sciences hallway, Levi shoves his tongue so far down Erwin’s throat that they share breath, and frots against Erwin’s thigh between his legs with zealous need.
“You’re a romantic piece of shit,” Levi huffs against his mouth, eyes screwed shut, voice pained with the need to climax. “Get that from a movie?”
“Perhaps,” Erwin breathes, cupping the bulge in Levi’s jeans. “Go to prom with me.”
“Why? So we can--” his breathing hitches into a whine “--take shitty photos and slow dance and lose our virginity?” Levi laughs at his own joke. “I’ve taken that fat cock up my ass more than the biggest slut in school’s been laid.”
Erwin doesn’t understand why it twists hotly in his gut, but it does. His fingers dig into Levi’s jeans unforgivingly. “Maybe,” he bites Levi’s tongue when it gets in the way, “I want you inside me.”
“Don’t write checks with that mouth that your ass can’t keep.”
“I’m not.”
And Erwin isn’t lying. They get matching tuxedos and boutineers and slow dance and take that awkward photo with the cheesy decorations, and as soon as they’re in Erwin’s room and the door is shut, Levi attacks. It’s easy work to get Erwin spread on his belly with Levi inside him. Their difference in size finds the tip of Levi’s cock knocks right against Erwin’s prostate and then drags along it mercilessly.
Erwin is crying streams of tears by the time he soils his sheets. Levi pulls out and pushes Erwin’s ass cheeks together and fucks himself there, coating Erwin’s back in a mark of ownership when he finishes.
“You’re so fucking gay,” Levi whimpers as he cleans them both.
Erwin is a little beyond blissed out, but he manages, “So are you.” And this time, Levi only kisses Erwin’s shoulder in response.
#in which youre so gay is code for i love you#eruriweek#day three#high school#eruri#penned#gouguruheddo

That is the main reason we travel with a portable hard drive. It allows us to reuse our memory cards without worrying about losing our shots.
Between that and the cloud we have two storage devices when we are on the road.
I love the Samsung Portable SSD because it is lightning fast and it is tiny.
Also, the SSD (solid-state drive) makes it very durable, so it can withstand the rigors of travel.

Because it is powerful, holds 4 charges and comes with a built-in flashlight.

Universal Travel Adapter form Eagle Creek
If you travel a lot, you’ll know what a pain it is rummaging through your adapters trying to find the right one for the next country.
That’s why Eagle Creeks world plug adapter works great. It’s got everything you need in one compact plug.
No more loose pieces of gear getting lost in the hotel room.
Why this one?
Because it is light and compact and also comes with 2 USB outlets.

The Joby Gorilla Pod has changed our travel photography and videos.
With all of the different mounts, we can put our smartphone, camera and GoPro on the flexible tripod and capture time-lapse photography, Steadicam shots (with the iPhone X and GoPro Hero 7) and we can mount it to anything.
When we’re walking around town, we don’t need to carry a bulky tripod anymore, we just use the Joby.
We’ve mounted this piece of gear to the front of our ship when cruising in Alaska, it’s that durable.
But we still suggest tying it off, we are all about having a double back up of everything for safety, it would suck to lose all that great travel footage by having a tripod fall in the water because of some fluke accident.
We recommend getting the heavier, more sturdy gorilla pod over the light ones as we’ve had the small cheap ones and they’ve broken.
Plus, the heavier one lets you mount your DSLR if you want to.
Buy it on Amazon
Some Gorilla Pods come with all the mounts, but most likely you will have to buy the accessories to go with it.
Dave and I both use our smartphone mounts for many things. When using the hyperlapse app on our iPhones, it helps a lot to have it sitting on something sturdy and still to minimize movement.
I now walk around with my phone on my mount all the time it’s much easier to shoot Instagram stories and videos with my phone mountain than just doing handheld.
Get as durable of one as possible, you don’t want your iPhone or smartphone falling out and smashing, so spend the extra money.
I like this one on Amazon because it has a remote control included, that’s the next one I’m going to purchase.

You spend a lot of money on your smartphone so why wouldn’t you take care of it.
Lifeproof is the best case for your electronics making them waterproof and shock absorbent. Believe me, we have tested it.
If you drop your phone a lot like me or plan on doing water excursions or adventure travel, you’ll want this case.
I ruined a phone snowboarding in wet conditions in Whistler, if I would have had this case then, my phone would have been saved.

If you are an Android user they also make them for the Samsung too
Why this one?
We have tested this underwater, in sandstorms, and on mountains and it is the only one that has not failed.
Waterproof, shockproof and easy to use. They don’t call it Lifeproof for nothing.
I love going to the beach, but I really hate having sand all over me.
When CGear offered to send us a beach matt to try, I said yes. We don’t normally accept gear to try out. We prefer to buy it ourselves, but we had to give this a chance, since I go crazy sitting on a sarong or towel at the beach and get covered in sand.
This matt really does wick away the sand. When the sand is wet, it needs to dry, but once it dries, it falls through the matt giving you a sand-free beach experience.

I was unsure about this one, but it is a really cool little travel gadget. While it doesn’t steam your travel clothes, it does make steaming them in the shower of your hotel room easier.
I will admit, one thing I’ve always had a difficult time with is getting my shirts close enough to the shower to make the steaming work. With SteamClip I can do that as it attaches virtually anywhere and works with any hangers, including the ball hangers that are attached to a trough in a hotel room closet.
For $11.99 (for one) it’s worth keeping tucked away in my suitcase.

This cool little gadget attaches to your home SIM card and can be activated when traveling.
KnowRoaming is the easiest solution to international data roaming and cell phone usage for only $3.99 per day unlimited data.
It is a micro-sized sticker that you put on your home SIM card. Once you activate it, it is ready to go.
You decide how much money you want to load onto your SIM card for each trip and you can top up anytime.
It never automatically tops up your account, so you never have to worry about spending more than you want.
The KnowRoaming SIM sticker doesn’t affect your home cell phone plan and only activates once you land in another country.

If you are anything like us, you have a lot of different memory cards.
We don’t like to erase anything until our photos and videos are backed up but having memory cards loose in our luggage isn’t an option either.
This Aluminum Memory Cardholder goes well with our Apple products (since it is silver) and holds SD and Micro SD Memory cards snug as a bug.
We also use it to keep things organized by putting used cards on one side and unused ones on the other.
Why this one?
Most memory card holders are soft and you cards can get damaged. This is a hard case and it stores both types of cards.

If you read our blog often, you’ll know that we often recommend the Belkin as one of the best travel accessories out there for anyone who hits the road..

When it comes to gadgets you are looking to take with you traveling I am sure water purification is not something you would think of.
But thanks to advancements in technology we can now carry something like the SteriPen. This works with ultraviolet light to purify water.
It is run with batteries and can fit in your pocket. What we love about this bit of tech is that it is chemical-free.
It should be noted that it doesn’t filter dirt out of the water it just purifies clean running water.

Have you noticed that with all the electronics that we’re all carrying, our charging cables are getting all mixed up and tangled?
Thanks to a tip from our pal EarthXplorer, we’ve solved that problem with Gear Ties.
Now when we pack our iPhone cables, computer cords and camera chargers, we wrap up all the loose ends with gear ties.
They’re way better than tape or zip ties because they coil and uncoil with ease and they are colour coded.

Pacsafe Travel Organizer – I carry all our travel documents and credit cards when traveling.
It’s a lot to worry about, but lately, my mind is resting a bit. I am loving my new travel organizer. It easily holds all my credit cards and travel rewards cards as well as both our passports and money. This organizer transforms into a clutch for nights out too.

I love noise-canceling earbuds. I have no idea where I got my Audio Technica Noise Cancelling earbuds. I think they were in a goodie bag from some event. But I am glad I did!
I really didn’t think noise-canceling earbuds would make that much of a difference but they do!
I use a rechargeable AAA battery and when I turn the QuietPoint on, it erases all background noise. When I have it on, I can hear the ambient noise around me.
I use my earbuds on planes to keep the noise out and even when sleeping, I keep them in with nothing playing.
I find they work better than earplugs.
If you really want to invest in a good set of earbuds and are a sound lover, get the AirPods Pro by Apple. They are wireless, can you can turn off the ambient sound just like the Audio Technica. You must go for the pro over regular earbuds, because the of the formable seal to your ear.

When you are not used to hot and humid weather, this fan comes in handy.
I have found it to be a lifesaver on buses without airconditioning or when I feel like I am overheating and need a quick cool down in hot climates.
These cool fans plug into our charging port on our iPhone and immediately turn on giving me a cool breeze.

We always carry dry bags with us when traveling to take with us on a day of adventure, but these are a good addition for storage.
These great resealable bags are perfect for putting our cell phones inside to keep dry but they are also good for keeping electronics safe from humidity.
We’ve had electronics fail in humidity and these bags keep out not only humidity and water, but dust too.
And a cool bonus is that touch screens work through the aLOKSAK bag.
We’ve even seen people use these to wash their laundry.

We are still fans of headlamps even with built in flashlights in our cell phones and power banks.
Why?
Becuase with headlamps we are completely hands free. Plus, the light beams are stronger and we often use them for night sky photography to get that perfect beam in the air or to paint light in a night scene.
We like this Black Diamond model because it is rechargeable. We use three AAA rechargeable batteries that can be charged in our headlamp with a USB charger.

GoPros – Love these cameras for adventure travel
The GoPro is our favorite adventure camera.
The GoPro Hero 8 just came out, but we are not in a hurry to buy it as we love our Hero 7.
We have been using Gopro’s since the beginning and find they are indispensable for adventure travel.
The Hero 7 and 8 are amazing for stabilization. So amazing that we have tossed our gimble and Osmo and use it for Steadicam shots.
If you are looking to upgrade from the Hero 6 or less, jump to the Hero 8, but if you have a 7 I don’t think there is a reason to upgrade.
However, we probably will soon as we love the idea of a flip-out screen and that’s an option with the 8.
You can shoot photos, use it for time-lapses and it shoots in 4k.
It’s perfect for anything you need to shoot hands free by using GoPro accessories like the car mounts, helmet mounts or wrist mounts.
We’ve taken our GoPro on every water adventure you can think of from scuba and snorkeling to jet boats, kayaks, and whitewater rafting.
It is a true adventure camera.

DJI Mavic Pro is what we use
DJI Mavic Pro Drone – This is the ultimate gadget that brings your travel videos to a whole new level.
It’s an excellent way to get a different perspective and point of view for all your travels.
Imagine being on vacation and taking an overhead view of your resort or having a drone follow along as you paddle down a river.
Or what about setting a drone off in the air to photograph the magnificent landscape of the destination you are visit.
The possibilities are endless. Just make sure to obey the law and learn how to fly it properly before putting it to the test in your travels.

We were starting to get frustrated with Apple not bringing their cameras up to par with other smartphones like the Huawei P30 Pro.
But Apple came through and if you want to travel without a DSLR, this is a great option.
With three lenses you now have the power to shoot wide landscapes and telephoto.

I don’t know about you, but when I am traveling, I’m on my phone a lot.
Be it watching movies or binging TV series on the plane or on a bus, checking Google Maps for directions or booking hotels and flights, my nose is always in a phone.
Plus, we watch movies in our hotel room on our computers. Blue light is terrible for the eyes, so I even though I had Lasik done on my eyes, I always wear blue blocking glasses when working on my computer or spending long amounts of time on my phone.

I’ve never been a fan of travelers distracting other people with their music. Heck, I’ve never been a fan of people playing their videos and music out loud on the subway or in the coffee shop.
But I am a fan of having quiet music playing in our hotel or apartment when we’re traveling.
We don’t always eat out or go to the bar each evening when we are on vacation and sometimes we say in while enjoying a bottle of wine and some bread and cheese.
Or we can have our music softly playing when in the park.
As a couple, it’s nice to enjoy listening to music together and blue tooth speakers have helped set the tone better than just listening to music through our iPhone or laptop speakers.
What I like about the JBL Flip is that ts is affordable and has good sound quality for a portable blue tooth speaker. Plus it comes with a protective travel case.

We’re all about saving space, and while we used to carry a stainless steel hard water bottle, we’ve switched to the Collapsible to save space.
We like this silicon water bottle because it is lightweight and bendy. Plus, a portion of profits go to Dolphin Rescue so how can you go wrong with that?

Ask D'Mine: Weigh What You Eat, and Insulin Analogy Troubles

Ask D'Mine: Weigh What You Eat, and Insulin Analogy Troubles
Happy Saturday! It's time for another edition of our weekly diabetes advice column, Ask D'Mine, with veteran type 1 and diabetes educator Wil Dubois who tackles all sorts of quirky questions from our D-Community.
This week, Wil's looking at options for weighing food, and also the medical profession's various analogies for diabetes. He's touching on everything from carb-focused apps to diabetes linguistics in this one!
Got your own questions? Email us at [email protected]
Darlene, type 1 from Wisconsin, writes: I have been living with diabetes for 41 years, and started on the pump a few years ago. I read labels and use the old, old food-exchanges-measure-and-WAG (Wild Ass Guess) method to calculate carbs for my boluses. In most cases I'm typically right on with my results or guestimations, but recently I purchased a scale just to add another calculation option. A scale is something that I would not utilize every day, but the other day I actually used it to calculate my bolus. I was shocked at the difference in the carbs. What do you find to be the most reliable source of determining the amount of carbs in food?
Wil@Ask D'Mine answers: I'm still waiting for the CarbSniffer App for my iPod Touch. You know, the one where you wave your smart device over your plate and it automatically counts the carbs with an accuracy of 1/10th of a carb, and then subtracts the fiber for you to boot. Unfortunately, there's not an app for that.
(((Sigh)))
Meanwhile, the closest thing is my trusty old Salter Model 1400 nutritional scale. It's my go-to carb counter at home. I bought it at Diabetes Mall years ago. Does anyone remember Diabetes Mall? Does anyone remember malls at all? Here's what I like about the Salter: It's smallish, cordless (it uses a 9 volt battery), measures in either ounces or grams—handy as some food labels use one measure and some food labels use the other—and it has an easy to use "zero" function. That means I can set a bowl on the scale, zero it, then put in cereal or whatever I feel like eating, and get the weight of the food without having to subtract the weight of the container. Then I can use any old calculator to figure out the carbs of my serving (based on the nutrition label). The scale is accurate enough that I can get excellent results even with heavy bowls and light foods.
But it gets even better. The scale also has a telephone-style numerical key pad on the far right hand side. What's up with that, you ask? It has a built-in data base of foods that don't come with nutrition labels. Let's say that I want to eat half a baked potato with my dinner. I can either go to a carb book or data base to find:
Potato, baked, 2 ¼ inch x 4 ¾ inch, with skin = 51 carbs
And then wonder what to do about the fact that my frickin' potato is 2 ¾ inches by 3 ¼ inches instead of the standard size, before dividing by two and worrying about how well I cut it in half....
Or, I can just slap the actual half potato on my scale, enter code number 908 (for potato — you look up foods in the guide they provide), press the carb button and get what I need: 19.44 carbs. Ta-da! Oh, and pressing the fiber button tells me to subtract 1.83 from the total, for the impact carbs. If I were a registered dietitian, I could also press the calorie button to learn that my intended potato serving has 83.9 calories. Additionally, it has buttons that I never use to calculate salt, protein, fat, and cholesterol. The only bummer is that it can only display one thing at a time, but maybe they've fixed that in the newer models.
It is not, however, portable enough to take with me when I'm eating out. For that, I also used to just use the SWAG method (Scientific Wild Assed Guess) of carb counting: Well, that looks like about 35 carbs to me, let's eat.
But recently, my iPod Touch has changed all that. I now have the very good Calorie King app, which actually beats the pants off of the printed book that used to live in the glove box of my Jeep. The book was great for drive-thrus, but of no use when you've forgotten to take it into a restaurant with you, hence the frequent SWAGing.
At the D'Mine Innovation Summit in November, My good friend Bernard introduced me to a new app called, improbably, Figwee. What's cool about this app is that it has photos of various foods and a slider that lets you make the portions either larger or smaller to mimic what's actually in front of your face. As you change the visual size of the portions, the carb data changes, too. They call it a "photographic portion estimator." It's very cool. You can even change the viewing angle on the food. We used it to estimate how many carbs the tiramisu had. How'd that work out? I don't know, you'll have to ask Bernard. I opted for the spumoni, instead.
So there's a lot of technology out there to help us get a better handle on our foods, and I encourage you to use it. When we guestimate, we risk what I call "error creep." A little at a time we get sloppy. Yeah, you think you're pouring a half-cup of corn flakes into that bowl but you're already up to three-quarters of a cup. If you don't believe me, serve yourself what you think is a third-cup of rice onto your plate, then scrape it back off and into a measuring cup to see how much you really served. I'll be its more than you thought it was! And heavily compacting the rice in the cup is cheating.
So to me, the most reliable method to estimate carbs is weight. I think that's the most accurate, and the simplest. But weighing food when you eat out isn't realistic for most of us. So weigh at home, SWAG (with some real science on your side with the help of a friendly app or two) when you are out and about, and you'll be fine most of the time. And for the rest of the time, that's what correction boluses are for!
Brad, type 2 from Georgia, writes: I was recently diagnosed and my doctor told me about how insulin is like a key that unlocks a door so the sugar can get into the cell. My question is, what closes the door again once the sugar is inside?
Wil@Ask D'Mine answers: Gah! I hate that stupid analogy. As a way to try to make some very complicated science easier to grasp, the action of insulin is often compared to a key that opens a door. Actually, as I'm sure you know, cells don't have little doors. Instead, via processes that border on magic, cells, with the assistance of insulin, can suck glucose right through their own walls. OK, well that was sloppily worded. Cells use highly specialized transporter molecules to ferry glucose from outside the cell wall to inside the cell wall. It's more like the international space station's arm reaching out and grabbing a cargo capsule, than like a tired commuter fumbling with his keys and unlocking his front door at the end of a long hard day.
The actual process involves words and concepts like "unpaired electrons, transmembrane segments, amino acids, hydrogen bonds, vesicles, signaling peptides, lipid folding," and the thoroughly unpronounceable "activated kinase domain autophosphorylates tyrosine." Oww, this is making my brain hurt. Ummmmm.... OK, like you doctor told you, there are these little tiny keys....
Don't get me wrong, I love analogies. I make them up and break them out every chance I get. I'm just not that fond of this one. It really doesn't do a good job of explaining either the pathophysiology or the defect of insulin resistance that leads to type 2 diabetes, and you've just identified yet another weakness of the whole analogy with your "closing the door" question. The problem is, I'm apparently not smart enough to come up with a better analogy than the cliché "key and door."
You know what? Maybe we're talking about the wrong kind of door. The whole process of getting glucose from the blood into a cell is more like walking through one of those revolving doors you see in public buildings. The door is never really open and never really closed, right? As it spins you can pass through. First you are outside. Then you are inside the door. Then you are inside the building. That's pretty much how glucose molecules pass from the blood into the cell. Now all I gotta do is figure out how to explain what part of the door the insulin is... I dunno... the motor that keeps it spinning? And insulin resistance is a crow bar jammed into the works...? OK, this is going to require a whole lot more work on my part.
But to answer your original question, the door doesn't need to shut again, because it was never really open. Just like the revolving door, the door for sugar is constantly spinning, grabbing sugar from outside the cell, holding it in the cell wall for an instant, then releasing it into the inside of the cell where it can be burned for fuel.
And now I'm going to shut the door on this whole conversation... I'll see you all next week. Same time, same channel.

Plus, the heavier one lets you mount your DSLR if you want to.

But thanks to advancements in technology we can now carry something like the SteriPen. This works with ultraviolet light to purify water.

It should be noted that it doesn’t filter dirt out of the water it just purifies clean running water.

We always carry dry bags with us when traveling to take with us on a day of adventure, but these are a good addition for storage.
These great resealable bags are perfect for putting our cell phones inside to keep dry but they are also good for keeping electronics safe from humidity.

27 of the Best Travel Gadgets for 2019
Travel Gadgets have come a long way since the days of a rubber sink stopper and a set of travel adapters floating around loose in your luggage.
With technology and innovation, there are many travel accessories to make your travels more enjoyable, organized and fun!
Over the years we have tried so many different gadgets. Some good and some bad. What does this mean for you?
This means that we have done the work for you and want to share our results of constant testing.

We take a lot of photos and videos when we travel and one tip I can give you is to NEVER erase memory cards until they are backed up on at least 2 devices.

Have you ever made a point of going into a coffee shop or restaurant just to use a plug to charge your smartphone or other travel gadgets?

With two USB ports, you can charge two devices at once. It even charges iPads, GoPros and Cameras.
