I’ll sometimes see people make fanart or something to do with the DL-6 incident and write underneath or in the fanart “don’t forget DL-6” and I’ll get super emotional about that line before suddenly remembering that that line was said by a fucking parrot and honestly I think that sums up the ace attorney experience

getting a DL-6 tattoo to make sure I don’t forget

I’ve been thinking about narumitsu coming up with excuses to hold hands lately

Babies holding hands as they cross the street because it’s dangerous, or grabbing onto each other so they don’t get separated on a field trip, or one of them (probably Phoenix, sorry baby) forgets his gloves inside and it’s freezing but they don’t want to lose a single second of recess going back inside to get them!

And then as they get older, Phoenix and Miles shaking hands after getting the verdict for DL-6, and maybe they’re both holding on for a little too long, staring a little too long, and breaking away with an awkward cough

or Phoenix pushing his way through the crowd after Matt Engarde’s verdict, carrying Pearl in one arm and holding Miles’ hand in the other because he can’t risk them getting separated and Miles is the one with a car and a tendency to speed so he’s the one—

or Miles clasping Phoenix’s hand between his own in the hospital because lord, he’s freezing, trembling uncontrollably and really, it’s only because Phoenix is trying to give him something so of course he has to take his hand—

and gently pulling Phoenix’s hand away from his spiky hair, on the verge of tearing it out, coaching him to regulate his breathing. Holding Miles’ hand through a particularly rough patch of turbulence. Taking Miles’ hand while they walk on the streets of whatever country he’s flown them out to, because he’s holding Trucy’s hand on the other side and they need to be balanced, can’t get separated,

quietly, quietly, joining pinkies in the front row of one of Trucy’s shows. quietly, quietly, tugging on sleeves just to ask to slip around a corner for close whispered words and warm cheeks that almost touch. quietly, quietly, letting their hands rest just beside each other as they both hold on to the grocery store cart, and it’s awkward because they weren’t made for two men of their stature to push it at once, but it really doesn’t matter all that much.

And (taking a page out of Rendevok’s book, love you) one of them (probably Phoenix, sorry baby) forgets his gloves again, and Miles carefully taking his hand, pulling him close, and warming his hands up as best as he can

and taking Phoenix’s hand, trying to steady it (which doesn’t help at all because they’re both shaking), glancing up at him and he’s got this wobbly excited smile on his face and Miles can’t help but snort, which doesn’t help the shaking hands but someone clears their throat and they both take a steadying breath, and Miles gently coaxes the ring onto Phoenix’s finger, and they smile

save for the dual destinies dlc case, i’ve finished my first play through of the mainline ace attorney games. incredibly solid series. i have a draft with my thoughts on each case in the aj trilogy + game ratings. dunno if i’d wanna post it though, it’s kinda long.

so instead, i’ll post some misc thoughts about phoenix and edgeworth portrayals across mainline/aai + my personal favorite interpretations of them by the writing team!

spoilers for AA mainline and AAI duology

by far, my favorite phoenix portrayal is og trilogy phoenix. the way he interacts with his environment and the people around him is very authentic, albeit rude as hell (which, in hindsight, is even more authentic for phoenix, so…). saw someone’s tumblr post mention that phoenix is such a “straight guy” which…yeah LMAO. real to life accuracy, so much so it’s infuriating. i think what i’ve played of dd’s dlc case captures what i wanted to see from post-trilogy phoenix in that he’s still an asshole and comically stupid, but not actually stupid, if ykwim. something i disliked abt the rest of aa5 and aa6 is how the writing team watered his character down to the following two oversimplifications: “phoenix only wins cases bc he bluffs!” and “uhh...what evidence does phoenix present now?”

don’t mistake a silly man for a stupid man. mia calls phoenix a genius in the og trilogy. phoenix dives in head first but he’s meticulous when it comes to drawing out the truth. most of all, he doesn’t outwardly show how frazzled he is (see that one drew misham quote about phoenix quietly watching the court as he’s accused of forging evidence), even if he feels that way. i get the colorful usage of expressions is for comedic effect but it just makes him look like he doesn’t know wtf he’s doing, and that’s a disservice to his character. yes, he bluffs, but he isn’t clueless. anyway, i’m excited to replay the first trilogy now that i “know” second trilogy phoenix. that might also just be my way of saying “give me back MY phoenix”, bc the last time i’m (mostly) on board w his portrayal is in aa4, and even then i didn’t like the dialogue in his forged evidence trial.

*though, as of writing this, i’ve seen some good arguments abt his forged evidence trial dialogue that make me think ok maybe it was actually pretty accurate. let’s see wht i think on replay

on the other hand, my favorite edgeworth—at least in principle—is post-apollo justice edgeworth. in many ways, i think how he’s portrayed at 35 is how he would’ve been had dl-6 not occurred, barring his career choice. still a bit pompous, still fairly mean (at least on the surface, we all know he cares more than he lets on) and perhaps a bit uptight, but self-assured and just. the writing team makes a point to show that edgeworth doesn’t care about prestige or fancy titles. that feels like him in a way post-first trilogy edgeworth doesn’t. this particular point was fleshed out in aa1 and rfta, tho, so idk if i can give yamazaki credit for it.

there are some things that will always bother me abt post-first trilogy edgeworth (the problems are present in the aai duology as well) where the writing team shoves him into a box teeming with boring tropes for his character archetype.

edgeworth is fine w pictures in the first trilogy, but comes to hate them in the aai duology.

ik it’s small but honestly what was the reason? what justification is there for this outside of wanting to fit edgeworth into a “cold character” stereotype?

bridge to the turnabout and turnabout ablaze are only about a month apart. i’m not buying into the sudden aversion to picture taking, regardless how minute a criticism it is. in any case, i feel like what i’m trying to say comes through w these screenshots: yamazaki’s edgeworth is always just a little off.

i am forgetting where i saw the post and i have too many liked posts to scroll thru to find it again but i saw a reblog?? tumblr post?? abt yamazaki and takumi’s diff approaches to edgeworth, where takumi says edgeworth listens to trot while yamazaki thinks he’d listen to classical music, and if that doesn’t drive the point home, idk wht will.

why then, did i enjoy post-aj edgeworth most? short answer is i’m taking liberties w his development and its implications. while i never completely buy into post-aa3 edgeworth, i can digest and get behind most of him when i’m not nitpicking, unlike w post-aj phoenix. does edgeworth feel a little uninspired and one- as opposed to three-dimensional? yeah, but his core is so strong i can overlook it. i’ll miss seeing a developed edgeworth when replaying the trilogy. him at 35 makes me feel warm inside.

anyway, i didn’t intend to start hating when i made this post bc i ultimately still believe the second trilogy was pretty good, if not overly ambitious with it's storytelling. maybe i'll post that AJ trilogy review.

overall, tho, t&t and aai2 were my favorite games to come out of the franchise. i’m going to do that slow replay of the first trilogy, aai duology, and aj:aa before making final judgments.

I think the fact that “don’t forget DL-6” was said by a parrot makes it all the more haunting. It has something inhuman, something beyond human, something nightmarish and fantastical - the parrot doesn’t understand the words, she just repeats them mechanically. The one who’s said them, said them so often that the parrot picked up on them, said them obsessively, relentlessly - is Yanni Yogi, the man destroyed by the case, alone in his miserable little shack next to the wide and misty lake, in the dark night where he committed murder and framed another for it. But we don’t get to hear them from him. We hear them from his parrot, in a chilling confirmation of this mysterious and unsettling old man’s identity. But when we bring the parrot to the light of the court, where the truth shines and mysteries are unravelled - she will not speak those words. “Don’t forget DL-6” is an injunction for the shadows, for the darkness, for the night. It is a phrase of vengeance and suffering. It comes from the mouth of a parrot in order to hide the man that killed another for it.

So! As stated in my rules, reality can be whatever I want. When folks come to this blog, I want them to know my Miguel is comics based with atsv influences, as well as influences from 2011′s Spider-Man: Edge of Time video game (as fun as Shattered Dimensions is, and while I do love Miguel in that, it wasn’t my favorite portrayal so that chunk of characterization is not included in this one.) That being said, some things with my Miguel I feel like I should include are

Miguel always wears the yellow shades in and outdoors and when hiding his eyes from people who don’t know he’s Spider-Man

He knows Tyler Stone is his father, but has not shared the fact that he knows. He does not know that Kron’s dead (and flushed)

Miguel hasn’t told Gabriel he’s alive. He never told him he was leaving

He doesn’t inject rapture. The movie didn’t explain why he does and I’m not about to give a wrong answer so he just doesn’t do it

He’s not as massive as he is in the movie but he’s still pretty tall (6′3)

Dana and Gabe were never together, just good friends. Gabe introduced Dana to Miguel at a party, and they dated sometime shortly after

But just as Peter lost Gwen, Miguel lost Dana when Kron (Venom 2099) killed her

He hasn't dated since loosing Dana

There’s a six year age difference between Miguel and Gabe (obvi Miggy is the older brother)

Miguel still works for Alchemex in the genetics department. All of his check goes toward the Spider-Society

He's rich but don’t forget that a common trait among spiders is that they’re very smart. Most spiders can make something out of practically nothing and that’s the big part in keeping operations running smooth. His check goes more towards specialized equipment that can’t exactly be built (and food)

He sings veeeeeeeery quietly to himself while he works sometimes

While he would happy to not be Spider-Man for the rest of his life, Miguel would miss the gliding aspect of it most of all

He remains Peter Parker’s biggest fan in the future. He tries to keep it on the DL but he has his fanboy moments

He is out of the closet to literally everyone but his mom (who’s alive btw)

George is dead tho (thank God) he unfortunately did not suffer (boo, tomato)
