Do you think he realizes that this implies all humans are female?
#'at conception' my dude nobody produces reproductive cells at conception.#sex doesn't start developing until a few weeks into pregnancy#'well the sex chromosomes are determined at conception' which don't always result in the respective sex organs developing :)#also this specifies it as whether they 'produce the large/small reproductive cell.' which isn't determined at conception.#and some people never develop either reproductive cell. are they neither male or female?#i was also amused by the phrasing of 'immutable biological sex.' ah yes biology. very much known for producing clean and immutable results.#have any of these people actually like. spoken to a biologist?#'its third grade biology' maybe you should have attended a biology class after third grade. there is more. it doesn't end at third grade.#i hold some hope in the fact that i don't know how well this is going to hold up in practice. there's so many holes and blatant errors.#you'd think if they were to pass an executive order about this they could've at least put some thought into how it is worded.#a lot of it is just like 'these words mean this' and it's like. okay? who asked?#do you think people read executive orders for guidance on what is right or wrong like it's the Bible?#'man and boys mean male' okayđ. I don't care.

I know this sentiment is like, rampant, on any subreddit that isn't transmasc specific
But right now especially, it really hurts
And I don't know what to do
https://www.reddit.com/r/trans/s/hZVLpf6qmq
Aw jeez, that's a doozie of a post. Let's go through this line by line, indents are from reddit, italics are from the Executive Order:
The language of Trumps executive orders regarding trans rights have just been revealed. It is beyond disgusting that his approach to transgender rights was to specifically target transfems and transgender women in his language.Â
Well, not to be a pedantic bitch, but Trump didn't write the thing. Stephen Miller did. Anyways, the author of this post is wrong. The order is very unilateral and affects both trans men/mascs and trans women/fems
Some examples:
(b) âWomenâ or âwomanâ and âgirlsâ or âgirlâ shall mean adult and juvenile human females, respectively.
(c) âMenâ or âmanâ and âboysâ or âboyâ shall mean adult and juvenile human males, respectively.
(d) âFemaleâ means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell.
(e) âMaleâ means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell.
(f) Â âGender ideologyâ replaces the biological category of sex with an ever-shifting concept of self-assessed gender identity, permitting the false claim that males can identify as and thus become women and vice versa
(b) Â Each agency and all Federal employees shall enforce laws governing sex-based rights, protections, opportunities, and accommodations to protect men and women as biologically distinct sexes. Â Each agency should therefore give the terms âsexâ, âmaleâ, âfemaleâ, âmenâ, âwomenâ, âboysâ and âgirlsâ the meanings set forth in section 2 of this order when interpreting or applying statutes, regulations, or guidance and in all other official agency business, documents, and communications.
(d) Â Agencies shall effectuate this policy by taking appropriate action to ensure that intimate spaces designated for women, girls, or females (or for men, boys, or males) are designated by sex and not identity.
As you can see, the order talks about both "men" and "women" in it. It's not targeted only at trans women/fems.
Nearly all orders did not mention the existence of transmascs and transgender men, and used dehumanizing terms and phrases to generalize all transgender people, primarily transgender women.
Buddy, did you read the order? It talks about how men are men from birth, which I can assure you, isn't talking about trans women. What do you think "permitting the false claim that males can identify as and thus become women and vice versa" means?
Us transmascs will not suffer the most- it's clear
Too early to say which will suffer "more" (whatever the fuck that means), but trans men/mascs will suffer
WE HAVE WORK TO DO AND WE HAVE BEEN ELECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT ITSELF TO STEP UP AS THE MORE PRIVELEDGED PEOPLE WITHIN THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY.
Literally what? Babes, honey, of two current elected officials, one is a trans man, James Roesener, and he's a state representative in fucking New Hampshire. The other, Sarah McBride, is a trans woman, and holds a higher position than James. No trans man has been "elected by the government".
Do social work for trans people, participate in campaigns, spread online awareness, stand up for our trans sisters, protest for easier hormone access.
Ah yes, Estrogen, Spiro, and Progesterone, the hard HRT to get. Nothing like those trans men who can just order testosterone off the internet, right? /s
Does that mean that literally anyone can just access feminizing HRT? Nope, but it's definetly a fuck ton easier to get, and actually possible to get, on the grey market, compared to T. If anything, people should be fighting for more access to T, but I guess not.
Even though trans men aren't as targeted as trans women, we WILL NOT STOP FIGHTING for you.
Oh honey, there's still a lot of targeted Trump policy that affects trans men. Have you forgot about the mass protests about the revoking of Roe v Wade? Or how Trump signed another order that revoked Executive Order 14020 which focused partially on access to reproductive rights, 14021 which focused on trans kids rights in school, 14075 which is another bill that gave rights to trans mascs?
Hell, Trump axed a bill that would form an initiative to focus on how to combat the act of corrective rape, which disproportionately affects trans men/mascs, as sexual violence against trans women/fems is usually public/with an audience such as forced genital exposure (Doan-Minh, S. (2019). Corrective rape: An extreme manifestation of discrimination and the state's complicity in sexual violence. Hastings Women's LJ, 30, 167.)
This reads almost like a trans woman pretending to be a trans man, trying to push a narrative that it's the women that are truly affected the most, when in reality, trans men/mascs and trans women/fems are fucked differently, in different ways, with different issues for each.
That whole post gives me the ick, and if the OP is actually transmasc, then I feel bad for his need to prostate himself before trans women and downplay the trauma that his fellow men/mascs undergo daily.

I was thinking similarly! I think Chartreuse has always been the 'easy' kid, the 'good' kid from Prism's perspective. She's 'well-behaved' like Cobalt, and she's 'independant' like Crimson, none of that inconvenient ~rebellious spirit~ (read as: Desperation To Be Seen And Heard,) but also none of that irritating Asking Her For Guidance and Questioning Things She Doesnt Want To Think About nonsense. (The "You're always having problems, grumpy!" exchange before she delivers cobalt's crisis in combination with her comparing him to Jack as referenced in another post informs a good bit of my perspective on prism and cobalt's relationship.)
Chartreuse does what shes told and doesnt need to be told how, she figures it out herself and performs her duties accordingly. at least until she suddenly won't. and that kind of pressure, to be perfectly convenient like that, takes a toll on you! That shes the 'angel' of the group speaks to the difference between her and her brothers' places in the story, too. Crimson's a Problem To Be Solved, Cobalt always comes bearing consequences to balance things, and Chartreuse is the Tragic one, the Kind one who just wants to live a life she cant have, whose flaws mostly serve to make her inevitable fate sadder. Nevermind the fact that when Treuse isnt being cagey, can be blunt as a sledgehammer and carries and protects her secrets less like a forlorn tragic maiden and more like a mobster who will take your kneecaps with said sledgehammer for asking too many questions, (although she, like her sibling, is a little more willing to discuss things plainly in the dreams where the consequences won't matter,) Crimson killed a guy on accident and still feels queasy about it when you catch him off-guard with the topic, Cobalt carries himself always with grim necessity but dislikes undue suffering and is willing to offer deals to alter ones fate, we are first introduced to chartreuse with threatening to beat someone to death for their transgressions. in no uncertain terms, chartreuse does not fuck around. And uh. Considering something going wrong Hurts Her, and that someone who isnt used to having her powers reacts to experiencing them like-

... yeah well i think i can understand why shed be a bit cranky and blunt about these things. (Given Dr. O never actually became a goddess, merely stole a charge off of a real one and played pretend for a little bit, i assume her vision of spectrum and the subsequent villainous breakdown were the main symptoms she experienced as opposed to. what peppermint's dealing with. Prism's all on/all off + amnesia/all on again approach of getting her adjusted her is, prism-typically, cruel and unusual. At least when crimson shares his powers hes careful about it [described as briefly turning off other senses, notably sight in the example we have, when possessing people so theyre not overwhelmed by the New Ones and maintains a fairly strict mental separation])
And the thing is- performing her role perfectly, correctly, is both an act of self-preservation (given things being broken Hurts her,) and demonstrably requires some. Morally Questionable Decisions. This is true of all the gods- godhood is an inherently dehumanizing ethical nightmare- but given that shes the one who does everything Right, and the way that 'doomed timelines,' the relativity of time and futuresight sort of complicate and abstract mortal moral concepts, especially her. If you take actions to prevent or change a doomed timeline, it is destroyed. Insert tenmyouji biker metaphor here. Every life lived beyond the point of divergence ceases to be, even if their origin point lives on in their own way. To do this constantly is to be responsible for loss on so great a scale, so incalculable and theoretical as to become abstract.
Its been noted- chartreuse and larry are alike in that the execution of the timeloop plan required disguised collaboration with the enemy for a while in order to create conditions for their ultimate victory. This was a MUCH shorter tenure for chartreuse, D+ wasn't a long haul grift, but she did help Order take over the tournament in order to stop her in the long run. and the way she went about this indicates to me that this is a pretty par for the course, 'business as usual' method of fixing things for her? a lot of how chartreuse behaves is defined by this sort of... temporally utilitarian information calculus, because thats how she does her job, and shes always working. even when it makes things worse!
Ive said it before and I'll say it again- folk didn't know how she was keeping him alive, but he also didnt even know she had two siblings until Cobalt involved himself, and chartreuse being a lockbox of secrets who refused to allow herself to be known was and is a very real point of contention in their relationship they're working on now that theyre in therapy. Chartreuse needs to have control of what information other people have about her- a symptom of Prism's surveillance, crimson has this problem too! Its a self-preservation tactic!- but even more so because her job depends on it. Even after she can't sense Prism's eye and manipulative influence on her anymore, she feels it drape over her, pulling her down, like a 'prismatic molasses,' after shes become mortal, defied prism, become vulnerable to it again.

Chartreuse's personality is, inevitably, heavily shaped by her unique perspective on all of time. Everything she can see, nonlinear and abstract and branching as it is, makes the means to any given end Extremely Specifically Clear, and makes all other possible actions ultimately irrelevant clutter. Of course she's ruthless like a weapon- why waste time when she and everyone else are just cogs to bring about inevitable conclusions, a divine train confined to its holy rails, because they've already happened, from her perspective. Of course she's secretive and prone to lying by omission- she knows intimately how the smallest bit of information can transform outcomes radically. Of course losing her timesight makes her act like a disoriented alien, defensive and angry- she's rarely, if ever, experienced life like a human being- or even like the rest of her own family does, she lives always in the past present and future causes and consequences of an action simultaneously. She's alienated in a very unique, overwhelming way.
You ever think about how she must have known she'd lose her nonlinear perspective eventually? That there was this... scary blindspot in a life she otherwise knew the beats of step by step, a flicker where it came back, and that she'd then choose to go back to being blinded?
You ever think about how she knew the world would come to an end? And played her role in it, placing her faith in the mission even when she couldn't see the roadmap anymore?
Now, you might ask, 'chirp, what do you mean come to an end? Aren't they just dreaming?' Well yes. But.

Isn't it interesting? That in every ncct, we start or at least end, with a cutscene in the waking world, and in ncct4... we start with Prism, engulfed in the snakes? The harbingers of the end, pondering why spectrum has seen fit to prolong their lives in the way they have? And then the snakes find them in the dream, and... well we heard them, they werent being the subtlest about it. The snakes will eat their universe. They, seemingly, did.
But not the dream. Thanks to spectrum, acting through juni, they were banished from this liminal, shifting safe haven of the dream. The rules are different now- at this point, its unlikely cpuk-as-streams will ever come back, and if they do, ryan's been clear it'd be rebooted in some fashion, given the notes things were left on. In a sense, then, is the old world not lost to the belly of the snake? It could always escape, theoretically- those the snakes consumed before spectrum's intervention were spat back up after all, the end need not stay the end- but the implications stand.

That would make the dream the closest thing to reality thats left for these characters, in this form, a metanarrative post-apocalypse shelter of sorts from the pursuit of The Lord of Snakes. and like many post-apocalyptic narratives, the world didn't actually end, it just... changed. A lot of things are lost, a lot is different now, for better or for worse, but life goes on.
We've been saying the whole time- whats the difference if theyre real or fiction? theyre still meaningful, theyre just governed by different rules than before. since ncct2, its been emphasized that whether any character is real or a construct is kind of pointless to investigate because even if they were, they themselves wouldnt even know, the dream constructs are still people regardless, and theres nothing particularly mechanically unique about them- they just exist as any other person within this reality would, theyre just formed out of in-universe perceptions the same way anyone else within cpuk's reality is formed out of some kind of Inspiration, like therapuppy from terra, or within Dr. Order's attempts to play act at being god, Quad from Val. Hell, majestic kerfuffle, Prism finally facing her fear of the end after attempting to start again from the top with a re-do of sorts, is also largely about rescuing a group of 'fake' people from their 'fake' dying world to seek safe harbor in the dream.
An angel is like a train on tracks. Incredible power, but confined to it's path, laid before it by god and their engineers. It has run this path without fail, charging along to its destination, taking every turn it needs to- even when that path turned away from the desired end, respite, the station, because it knows. all tracks lead there eventually. The conductor cannot keep the train running forever, no matter how much she wants to. Someday, she will have to retire. The train will have to retire. To push the train past its limits against its engineers designs only brought it all closer.
Yknow whats kinda funny? that Chartreuse gets angel-y imagery (like the roman numeral clock halo, and the whole 'time sand' death thing for doomed timelines being kind of reminiscent of 'smiting enemies into pillar of salt' style angel stuff) where her brothers are referenced as demon-y (crimson being directly called a demon more than once and cobalt being directly compared to The Devil at least once,) but out of the three of them shes kind of the scariest if you pay enough attention and give it a good long overthink

Master Fu: Master of Failure (200 Follower Special)
Mentors are some of the most important characters in all of pop culture, as they help the protagonist advance in his journey while helping them improve in skill and personal growth. Because of their vital role, mentors tend to be among some of the most memorable characters in their respective franchises.
Mentors can be a variety of people, from wise sages, to former soldiers, to just regular people with a strong moral compass. What matters is the impact they have on the hero, and the role they play in the story.
Master Fu does a poor job at accomplishing both of those qualifications.
Like, well, basically every bad thing in Miraculous Ladybug, the ideas behind Master Fu were interesting in concept. The problem was the execution, or rather, what little we got with Master Fu. Yet he still manages to be memorable (no pun intended) for all the wrong ways. But before we get into Master Fu, let's get into a problem with Miraculous Ladybug in general that plagues several characters and plotlines.
Order of the... What Exactly?
Despite being âthe last known member of the Order of the Guardiansâ, Master Fu hasn't really explained much about the Order he's from. All we really know is that he was trained to guard the Miraculous and distribute them to worthy people. And the Order does this... why exactly?
This is a huge problem with Miraculous Ladybug, the underdeveloped lore behind a major part of the story. Despite being connected to the Miraculous, you know, the magical artifacts the show is named after, we still don't really know much about why they were formed in the first place, and what their connection to the Miraculous is.
Oh wait, the origin of the Miraculous actually is explained... in an issue of the tie-in comic.
Someone seriously thought it was a good idea to explain that Kwamis are connected to abstract concepts like creation and destruction, and how the Miraculous were created, both very important things to learn, AND THEY DID IT IN A GODDAMN TIE-IN COMIC THAT ONLY LASTED THREE ISSUES!Â
I shouldn't be expected to read supplementary material to understand the backstory of a show. You don't need to watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars to understand the tragedy of Order 66, so why would you expect your audience to read a comic book to understand the origin of the magical objects that give your main characters superpowers?
Even the explanation we got isn't that detailed. Okay, fine some guy created the Miraculous to give the Kwamis tangibility (which actually explains how they can phase through solid objects), but... how and why? How was this sage able to see Tikki, how was he able to create the Miraculous, and why did he do it?
This extends to the Order of the Guardians as well. How and why were they formed? What exactly do they even do besides guard Miraculous? Why do they even guard the Miraculous in the first place? We even learn more about their methods, and trust me, I'll get to that later.
In Xiaolin Showdown, the pilot episode of all things explains why Shen Gong Wu are so important, and why the Xiaolin Dragons dedicate their lives to protecting them, because they maintain the balance between good and evil, and if they fall into the hands of evil, the world could fall into 10,000 years of darkness. Yeah, the first episode actually does a good job at explaining the backstory of the show, who would have thought? And it's from a show that has a better representation of Chinese culture when this is what the main character looks like.
Overall, the Order of the Guardians is an underdeveloped concept that does very little to help out Master Fu as a character. If the backstory of a character is so vague, how can we even understand the character's motivations in the first place? And by God, are Master Fu's motivations confusing.
Master of Not Doing Anything
Before I started working on this, I saw a video review of Miraculous Ladybug by someone who had never seen the show before, and only did so because one of his friends said they would start watching One Punch Man if he did. Even though he only mentioned Master Fu a few times, he described him as âa dude with a jewelry box full of superhero blingâ, and felt like that was all those unfamiliar with the show needed to know. As someone who is familiar with the show? Yeah, that's basically all Master Fu is.
Despite being classified as a mentor, Master Fu doesn't really do a lot of mentoring. Sure, he occasionally talks to Marinette, but whenever things get rough, all he really does is hand out a Miraculous for Marinette to give to someone else temporarily.
And I've said it multiple times, but the Rent-A-Miraculous system is a horrible idea. Not only does it require Ladybug to basically leave Cat Noir to fend for himself while she rushes over to Master Fu, she has to think of an ideal candidate for the Miraculous she takes, find said candidate, rush back to where the Akuma is, hope Cat Noir wasn't incapacitated by the Akuma, and then haul ass to Master Fu's place to return the Miraculous as soon as the fight's over.
The idea of introducing new heroes is interesting, but because we see them so rarely, they don't really feel that important. I get that the title is âTales of Ladybug and Cat Noirâ, but I just wish the show would do more with the temporary heroes, like see how it affects their lives. Unfortunately, I can't, thanks to âMiracle Queenâ, as usual. I'll get to that episode again later on.
Even when Master Fu takes out the Miraculous, he doesn't really help Marinette think of which one to choose. He just says something like âTake a Miraculous, but be sure to return it to me when you're done.â It doesn't matter, because Marinette apparently knows how all fifteen Miraculous in the box work. Hey, wouldn't it have been nice to see Master Fu actually teach Marinette how every Miraculous works? Maybe have him suggest which Miraculous to take based on the Akuma's powers? I'm just saying, maybe you can take time away from Ladybug and Cat Noir fighting a giant baby to actually give more focus on other characters.
Before that, he was just planning to do nothing and hope Ladybug and Cat Noir could reclaim Hawkmoth's Miraculous for him. According to Tikki in âThe Collectorâ, Marinette isn't even supposed to see the Guardian, and only met Master Fu because she found the Grimoire. So despite being âGuardians of the Miraculousâ, he doesn't even help out the random people he decided to give Miraculous to? It's a miracle Ladybug and Cat Noir survived an entire season without any real guidance from Master Fu.
The third season tries to do something by having Master Fu train Marinette to become a guardian, but all of the training is entirely offscreen, and by âFeastâ, he just says that her training is complete, and then makes her a guardian against her will in âMiracle Queenâ.
Then there are moments unrelated to the Miraculous where he fails to actually be a mentor. Everyone knows about how stupid it was that the writers wanted the audience to sympathize with Adrien for threatening to quit being Cat Noir while Paris is flooded, but this also could have been a moment where Master Fu helped him talk about his feelings, or maybe dispense some wisdom about how hard it is to understand if someone actually trusts him or not. You know, act as a mentor to Adrien?
But instead, they brush over this potentially interesting character moment, because that would actually imply that Adrien has flaws. Because we all know Astruc loves to show the audience that Adrien Agreste is basically the second coming of Jesus Christ, right? And even though the episode making a big deal about Adrien not knowing Master Fu, they really don't have any meaningful conversations outside of that episode, except maybe âParty Crasherâ. Though the episode does have Master Fu taking action when Ladybug is incapacitated by the Akuma by giving a Miraculous... to someone he barely knows swimming in Adrien's bathtub. Even he regrets his choice a few minutes later.
And then there's the fact that despite it being his job to guard the Miraculous, he does literally nothing to figure out where the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculous are. Sure, he briefly talked with Marinette about Gabriel possibly being Hawkmoth in âThe Collectorâ, but she did most of the investigating in that episode.
Hell, âSandboyâ establishes there's a way to contact Nooroo, the Kwami of the Butterfly Miraculous, on his birthday, but Master Fu turned it down, so they did it behind his back! For the love of God, this is a chance to figure out who Hawkmoth is and bring the conflict with him to an end, and you're passing it up?! In âHeart Hunterâ, Master Fu says that Hawkmoth âtalks a lot, but hasn't achieved much so farâ, but you could easily apply that to Master Fu himself.
Outside of giving Miraculous to Marinette to borrow, what has Master Fu actually accomplished in the story? Maybe his backstory will shed more light on him as a character, and won't just make him look even worse.
The Bungled Backstory
One of the most frustrating things about Master Fu's backstory is that it actually has some pretty good buildup.
In âThe Collectorâ we learn that Master Fu made a mistake that led to the destruction of the temple the Guardians operated out of, and the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculous were lost in the process. This does a good job at setting up the mystery of what Master Fu did to destroy the temple in the first place. It continues in âSandboyâ, where Master Fu's worst nightmare is him heing haunted by the ghosts of the guardians he accidentally killed, and then we see in âBackwarderâ that Master Fu had confidants to help him keep the Miraculous safe from what are assumed to be the Nazis. Because I guess guardians get to share their secrets, but not Ladybug and Cat Noir?
And then we learned the full backstory in âFeastâ. Much like how âOblivioâ and âCat Blancâ killed any chances of me ever showing any sympathy to Alya and Gabriel respectively, I lost all respect for Master Fu after watching this episode.
We learn that Fu was chosen to be a guardian at a very young age, and had no other choice but to start his training. One day, he was assigned to watch over A Miracle Box as a test for twenty-four hours without any food, water, or sleep. He decided to use the Peacock Miraculous to create a Sentimonster to get him some food, but his anger corrupted the Sentimonster that made it go on a rampage to eat the Miraculous in the temple... and somehow set the temple on fire judging from this shot.
In my main blog, I had originally made a post calling out Master Fu for what he did, but since then, I've mostly softened up. This is just a fan theory you are free do disagree with, but I like to think that Fu was supposed to use a Miraculous during the test. Maybe he was supposed to use the Mouse Miraculous to get some food while one of the clones sat and watched the box, or use the Horse Miraculous to sneak to the kitchen.
My problem comes from how his backstory affects his actions, and makes him look like a complete hypocrite.
Even though he hated the fact that he was basically drafted to become a guardian when he was only a child, he saw no problem handing out Miraculous to children who weren't that much older than he was when he burned down the temple. I don't even think he should even qualify as a master. His title shouldn't be âMaster Fuâ, but something more along the lines of âActing Master Fuâ on account of the other guardians burning to death.
Say what you will about Zordon for recruiting teenagers with attitude to become the Power Rangers, but what makes him more likable than Master Fu was that he actually cared about them. He routinely gave them advice, never really lost his patience with them, and understood they had lives outside of their jobs as Rangers. Hell, he was even willing to let them retire to peruse major opportunities in their lives, like Jason, Zack, Trini, and Kimberly, because he knows what it's like to be trapped in a situation that prevents him from living a normal life.
In fact, if Fu really hated being forced to become a guardian, why did he have no problem doing the same thing to Marinette? If anything, Fu should hate the Order of the Guardians, but it's never really explained what really motivated him to continue their practices.
Usually, a backstory related to a supporting character is meant to be followed up by the main characters doing something so history doesn't repeat itself. Anakin Skywalker was driven to the Dark Side because he was afraid of losing someone close to him, with the Jedi Order giving him no support due to their rules against personal attachments. This ideology is subverted in the original trilogy when it's Luke Skywalker's compassion for his father that motivated Anakin to rebel against the Emperor and fulfill his destiny as the chosen one.
But instead of learning from past events, or maybe realizing the Order of the Guardians was never as noble as we were led to assume it was, Master Fu just upholds their tradition of enlisting child soldiers to protect these world-ending artifacts while barely doing anything to help them out. And nobody ever acknowledges there might be anything wrong with the Order.
The Cowardly (and Hypocritical) Turtle
Despite being established to be 186 years old (which still hasn't been explained), and the destruction of the temple happening when he was a child, Master Fu hasn't really done anything with his position.
Despite having all the time in the world, as well as a Miraculous that lets him teleport anywhere, he still hasn't found the missing two Miraculous that Gabriel managed to find at least 129 years after he lost them, give or take.
There's also the fact that, at least, according to the flashback in âBackwarderâ, Master Fu may or may not have chosen to sit down and let several historical atrocities and conflicts happen because he didn't want to risk losing the Miraculous. You know, minor things like the Taiping Rebellion, the Crimean War, World War I and II, the Rape of Nanking, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Tienanmen Square Massacre and God knows what else. What did Master Fu even do while he ran around the world to keep the Miraculous safe anyway?
These both factor into the biggest problem with Master Fu as a character: He's a coward.
Whenever he's confronted with a tough situation, Master Fu's first instinct is to run away and hide. As soon as the Sentimonster that destroyed the temple returns, he takes back Marinette and Adrien's Miraculous and runs away. As soon as Hawkmoth finds out about his existence, he packs up his stuff and runs away. When he's captured by Hawkmoth and Mayura, he gives up his position as Guardian and forces Marinette to take on the role, so he can run away safely.
And once again, despite hating the Order for forcing him to train to become a Guardian, Master Fu has no problem with forcing Marinette, someone who was only a few years older than he was when he was drafted, to become the next Guardian of the Miraculous, all while conveniently losing his memory in the process, which implies that Marinette will lose her memory when she retires as Guardian. I once made a submission to Terrible Miraculous Ladybug AU's joking that he only made up the whole amnesia thing just to dump the responsibility of being Guardian on Marinette, but with his appearance in the Season 4 teaser, I'm genuinely worried that may be true.
And yet, despite every incompetent thing he's done, the show keeps trying to portray Master Fu as this wise old soul, because like with so many characters, the writers think if they keep saying things that aren't true, the audience will just give up and accept these ideas as fact. âMaster Fu is a wise mentorâ. âAlya is a good journalistâ. âLadybug and Cat Noir are equalâ. âChloe is irredeemableâ. âGabriel is a sympathetic villainâ. âLila is a good liarâ. âThomas Astruc responds to criticism like an adultâ.
And I'm not against the idea of a flawed mentor either. I already talked about how complex Dr. K is as a character, and how her connection to Venjix makes her an interesting mentor. What I want is for the narrative to acknowledge that Master Fu is way out of his league. I want someone, anyone, to actually call him out for how poorly he's handled things. I don't want to be told he's a great mentor when the evidence clearly shows otherwise.
But it seems like we may never get that in the show, even though it looks like he's going to return in Season 4.
Let's just hope Master Su-Han is a better mentor, and actually appears in more than a single episode before being escorted off so Marinette can't have any confidants as Guardian. Who am I kidding? That's basically what's going to happen.

The Reality of Real Estate Investing with Dave Seymour & Jay Conner
Jay Conner (01:44):
After 16 years as a firefighter and a paramedic, my special guest launched his career, rapidly becoming one of the nationâs top real estate investors himself. So within his first few years as a real estate investor, he had transacted millions of dollars of real estate and had become one of the nationâs leading experts in both residential and commercial transactions.
Well, his unabridged passion for business and real estate put him on the radar very, very quickly in the A&E television network, and other multiple television stations and organizations like CBS, ABC, CNBC, Fox News, and CNN. Well, the New York Times reported that my guestâs series titled, âFlipping Boston,â posted the highest ratings ever for the A&E Network at the time of airing. Well, my guest has been sought after as the tell-it-like-it-is motivator. Well folks, my guest, friend, and fellow mastermind member is Mr. Dave Seymour. So welcome to the Private Money Academy Podcast, Dave!
Dave Seymour (03:39):
My Lord, I was looking around to find the guy that you were just describing.
And then I have one of those moments, âOh, itâs me.â Yeah. Iâve kicked some butt and taken some names in my career. God bless you, man. Itâs a pleasure to be with you, dude. It really is. Thanks for having me on.
Jay Conner (03:59):
Well, Iâm excited to have you on Dave. I mean, you have got quite the story. I mean, thereâs not many of us guys and gals out here that have had the trip and the journey that you had. So, yes, we want to hear all about âFlipping Bostonâ and being on the A&E Network. But before we get to that, you got your seatbelt on? You ready to go?
Dave Seymour (04:22):
Iâm ready to rock and roll, brother. Iâm ready. Letâs rock and roll. You got it.
Jay Conner (04:26):
Well, tell us, how did you get started in real estate?
Dave Seymour (04:29):
Yeah. Great question. Itâs always a good opener. Itâs like you said, I was a firefighter and a paramedic for many years. Iâm actually an immigrant to the United States of America. Donât tell anybody. Itâs a secret. I came from London, England back in 1986. I became a naturalized citizen. Absolutely loved what I was doing, but the challenge was, I wasnât very financially literate back then, Jay, and I suffered the consequences of financial illiteracy and I got hurt pretty badly during the crash of 2008-09. I was a firefighter paramedic. I was working construction. I was working retail security. I was working about 120 hours a week and I couldnât make ends meet. And I very quickly realized that what I was doing wasnât working. I was following the herd as I call it, 401-Ks, et cetera, et cetera. Debt was bad.
Saved money. I mean, all of the misnomers that I was given from years of education. But anyway, I found myself in 2008 losing my primary residence, a pre-foreclosure scenario cost me a marriage, Jay, and it was a serious side to all of this stuff, relationship-wise. It wasnât easy to be a father to my son or a husband to my wife when I was working that many hours, I was out of the house. And itâs funny, man. I look back at it today and I have a bright smile. At my lowest, lowest point, I always kind of looked north for some help and guidance and Iâm screaming and shouting at my God. And Iâm like, âWhat did I do wrong?!â I didnât lie. I didnât cheat. Didnât steal.
I worked hard. I was a man among men. Worker among workers, and yet everything had turned to crap. And Iâm shouting at my God and Iâm like, âHelp, help!â Those that seek shall find, right? And in that moment of clarity or insanity, depending on how you want to look at it, a commercial came on the radio and it was, âTeach me foreclosure.â I was in my pickup truck. âTeach me foreclosure. Free one and a half hour seminar coming to your neck of the woods. Do you want to be a real estate investor? Do you want to learn how to do transactional deals with no money down, no credit?â And Iâm like, well, I got no credit. My credit score is like 2. Iâve got no money. Iâm losing my house. But I believe that it worked, Jay.
That was what was important. Like I had faith that real estate was a vehicle to wealth because Iâd seen it, working on the construction sites, the investors showed up. They didnât have any dirt on their boots. They were driving nicer cars. They got shiny white teeth. They were smiling. I wasnât. So that was how it started, man. I went to a seminar. Iâm a product of real estate education and training. And I took to it like a duck to water. I had no way to go but up really, was the answer to it. And I put one foot in front of the other. Worked with my now-wife, Mary Beth, for the 3-day class, and invested $27,000 on her credit cards. She was my first private lender, go figure, right? My wife. Itâs the truth. I looked at her and I said, âWhat do you think?â It was $27,000 for like 5 classes.
I said, âWhat do you think, baby?â Then she goes, âI donât know, what do you think?â I said, âI canât keep doing what Iâve been doing. You know, the cost just keeps going up. The emotional costs, the physical costs.â She said, âGo get âem!â She said, âIâm proud of you. I love you. I support you in anything you want to do.â And I looked at her, I said, âIâm so glad you said that. Weâve got to use your credit cards, mine are maxed out.â That was the truth and thatâs how it all began. So yeah, kind of a long story, short, short story long, however you want to put it, but that was it.
Jay Conner (08:09):
So what year did you start your education and when did you go full-time real estate investing?
Dave Seymour (08:19):
Yeah, I started my first classes in late 2007 and 2008. Like the foreclosure crisis was just beginning to ramp up. And I started learning how to do short sales and distressed assets. And 18 months later, I quit the fire department and I say, âI quit.â I didnât really quit. I retired. And the reason I retired was it got to a point where it cost me way too much money to go to work. It is as simple as that. I had made enough noise and grabbed enough attention in those 18 months that I was in the process of doing the TV show, âFlipping Boston.â I had surrounded myself with different people. I learned about internet marketers and the different ways of lead generation and attraction and execution and contracts and money. And I was like, all in man. I was like, where am I? Where has this been my whole life? You know, Iâm like, Iâm alive!
And that was it. That was how it started.
Jay Conner (09:22):
I experienced the same exact thing when I got into real estate investing. It was like, âMy lands, where has this been all my life?â And my very first real estate investing seminar that I went to, I had already been doing this business for 6 years. My lands, donât start out that way, get your education first. But I was cut off and lost my lines of credit in January of 2009. And thatâs what triggered me to go to my first educational seminar to learn about private money. And thatâs what got me going, this world of private money. So you got in there 18 months after getting your education. You retired from the firefighting and paramedic world. What were some of your early struggles when you started out and what are the lessons you learned from them?
Dave Seymour (10:18):
Yeah, thatâs a great question. The biggest struggle I ever had was with my own head. Growing up a blue-collar guy now moving into a white-collar world. It was very hard for me to believe early in my career that people would sell assets to me for a discount. It was about self-worth, like I did a ton of personal development as part of my business development. Believing that I was worthy, believing that I had something of value, which was my education, which was the way that I looked at a real estate transaction. And as you do it, hereâs the key. I think Jay, and I donât know if you agree with this, I anticipate that you do, but as long as I was always in motion, in forward motion, as long as I was putting, honestly, my very best effort with one foot in front of the other.
If I was removing the negativity around me, the people who said, âYou canât.â I loved it when somebody said I canât because Iâd immediately turn it to, âI can.â And I just execute. And I just somehow succeeded. So it was about working on my mind first. A guy said to me, âDave, thereâs 6 inches of detrimental thinking that lives between your ears.â He said, âOnly you can control that. Only you can. Are you wealth? Are you confidence? Are you joy? Are you value?â He said, âBecause if you believe you are, then that will resonate to the people around you.â And I started looking at opportunities where I could bring massive value. And it wasnât money-driven, Jay. It wasnât money. Money was the by-product of service first. Helping a distressed homeowner. Looking after your contractors and treating them like equals, not like they were lesser citizens or whatever. Leaving my pride and my ego and pocket it to one side. Stepping into every relationship with everybody being at a hundred. And losing points rather be at zero.
Iâd always have to gain points. You know what I mean? I bought an attitude of gratitude to everything that I did. And I just kept going, man. Thereâs a book out there. It says, âSix inches short of gold, or six feet short of gold.â And the idea is, is it just that one more phone call? Is it just that one more author? Is it just that one more relationship? Are you gonna quit before itâs time to succeed? And what happens is, 90% of our competition, if not higher, quit. And thatâs why guys like us succeed because we stay the course. We have the tenacity, we have the drive, we have the faith, the belief. And again, surrounding myself with like-minded people who wanted to do what I was doing and that overcame any hurdle. There arenât any hurdles. Theyâre just little blips along the radar. Itâs as simple as that.
Jay Conner (13:13):
Well, what you just said, Dave, is one of the reasons that you and I resonate so well with each other and that is, itâs never about the money for the long-term. Making a lot of money can be a motivation for somebody in their short term. But you know, itâs been my experience over all the years of being in business. Whenever I got involved in an activity or an opportunity, and the only interest that I had in that opportunity was to make money, I never succeeded. I never succeeded. And it all comes down to what you just said, having a servantâs heart. I know you gotta love Zig Ziglar like I love Zig Ziglar, right?
Dave Seymour (13:54):
Right on my wall, right there. âYou can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.â Zig Ziglar, itâs right there on my wall, brother.
Jay Conner (14:07):
Thatâs it, thatâs it.
Dave Seymour (14:13):
Look at that, Iâm getting goosebumps on my arms.
Jay Conner (14:13):
Mine are standing up on my neck. So, as far as your real estate investing journey, what have you focused on? Fix and flips? Wholesaling? What niches of real estate have you really been involved in and like, just knocked it out of the park?
Dave Seymour (14:34):
âYesâ is the answer to all of them. Yeah. Look, hereâs the thing. As you become more intelligent in your industry, you see more opportunities. So, the TV show, âFlipping Boston,â pigeon-holed me as the grumpy construction guy who just got it done, which is all BS, itâs reality TV, right? But the reality of it was, I really did buy houses with my partner, we really did renovate them, fix them, sell them, and make a profit. Wholesaling is easier money. Itâs just great negotiation skills, understanding the mechanics. I think the biggest disservice in the education space is that people say, if you just learn how to be a wholesaler, then youâll make quick money. Well, thatâs garbage. You gotta know how to be a rehabber so that you can be a great wholesaler, right?
If you donât understand the mechanics, the numbers, the time, the ARVs, et cetera, et cetera. So Iâve always been in that field. Always, always will be in that field. Although itâs not my focus so much today. Along the way, buy and hold, get some cash flow coming in, get some appreciation, let the tenant go to work and pay down your debt service for you, thank you very much. Treat them like the gold that they are. Donât be a slum landlord, give them clean, decent, affordable housing, give them a response immediately when they need you, if you can, to make sure that you build that relationship with them. Theyâre the most valuable asset that you have as a real estate investor, is your tenant base. And then today, we level up. Itâs always a case of levelling up. I canât sit still. Itâs my A.D.D. DNA. And today weâre in the commercial real estate space. I run a $100 million private equity fund that invests in multi-family assets in the Sunbelt. And we just started our build-for-rent strategies where weâve got 6-acreage plots in Florida, another 8-acreage plots in South Carolina and Atlanta. And now weâre going to be building houses for the folks who want to rent and not own. So thereâs a trajectory, Jay, which part of that do you want to address for us?
Jay Conner (16:44):
Well, youâve done it all and itâs just part of ascending up the ladder. Now you just mentioned that youâve got a pretty large fund for the commercial projects. So like myself, you know a whole lot about growing capital, attracting capital. I mean, both you and I could talk a long time about that, but letâs just stop here for a moment. Tell us from your experience, whatâs the best way to grow capital?
Dave Seymour (17:14):
So look, there is an absolute learning curve, right? So when I was doing single-family buy fix and flip, attracting an investor, first of all, who understood the business, was critically important. So you could do that through show and tell. This is what we paid for it. This is what we did to it. This is how much we made. And this is what our private lender made on it. Protected, secured, and insured. 8% interest. Interest only, blah, blah, blah. You know the pitch, right? And that becomes word of mouth. So, my portfolio attracted that retail investor. Iâm not going to lie, Jay. Iâm going to be truly transparent. It can be hard work. It could be heavy lifting sometimes with the retail investor. We use the term, âIf it feels like Iâm pushing a donkey up a hill, then I got to stop doing it.â
Right? So how do I get attraction? How do I get motion? Repetitive actions? Itâs by being successful. The very first private loan I took was $35,000 from a lieutenant at the fire department. And I said, âSo, Mike, could you give me $35,000? Iâm going to put you in a third lien position on this property. But Iâm going to give you your $35,000 back in 3 weeks plus an additional $5,000.â I knew I could do it because the property was on the contract. We just needed this money to squeeze roots at the finish line. So I give him his money back in 2 weeks and heâs ecstatic. And he said to me that day, âDude, that was a great deal!â I said, âThanks, Lt. I appreciate it.â He said, âIf you ever,â magic words, âif you ever need money again, you come to me first.â
âAnd if I donât have it, I know somebody who does.â And what he was referring to was his father because his father was a retired chief. So, the first one is always the toughest one. But once youâve got traction underneath that, it becomes a system. It becomes repetitive and it creates its own motion. Today, Iâm in a different sandbox altogether. Today, I attract capital through the portfolio. I attract capital through family offices, institutional capital. How would you like this for a problem, Jay? You ready? I have 18 months to put together a half a billion dollar portfolio because Iâve got an arbitrage trust company thatâs ready to take it out at a full cap on the buy-side and an 8.5, 9% cash on cash return. So, thereâs a guy waving a half a billion dollar check in my face and heâs like, âGo find me the real estate. Letâs go!â So, itâs interesting because the first guy that I learned commercial from was a very, very cool gentleman. His nameâs Dave Lindahl. Heâs in Massachusetts.
Jay Conner (20:12):
Yeah, Daveâs a good friend of mine.
Dave Seymour (20:14):
Okay. So DL said to me, âDave, itâs just zeroes. More zeroes on the way in, more zeros on the way out. Just run the deal the same way.â And I never forgot that. So yeah, thatâs how we raise money today, man.
Jay Conner (20:30):
Thatâs awesome. Before I get to my next question, let me ask you this first. So everybodyâs dying to hear the short story summary of your television stardom of the A&E show âFlipping Boston.â So take a moment and tell us about that. Well, before you tell us about reality TV, I tell people whenever the ask me, âJay, tell me about all these flipping shows.â And Iâll say, âThe only thing real about reality TV is none of itâs real, except Dave Seymourâs Flipping Boston because he actually did have to do all that.â But anyway, take a moment and tell me and the audience about that reality TV experience.
Dave Seymour (21:12):
Look, itâs a blessing and a curse, depending on how you want to look at it. The blessing was the national exposure. I donât know about anybody else. I didnât get rich off of a TV show. I think it was $15,000 an episode at the end of our career there. Hereâs what the benefits are. The exposure. It put me on the Today Show multiple times. It put me on the Rachel Ray show multiple times. It allowed me to be recognized as a national expert and a pundit on CNBC and CBS and other networks. So that was the caveat to it. The nitty gritty of a real estate transaction being filmed for a TV show. If itâs a half an hour TV show like these fix and flippers, these shows on HGTV, you know what I mean?
If itâs a half hour show, look, man. Paint and carpet, paint and carpet. Youâre not making 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, a hundred thousand dollars on paint and carpet, okay? So stop it. Be serious. Theyâre creating a TV show. You know, with us up here in New England, my inventoryâs some old, old ladies, man. I mean, 1890, you know, 1880. The oldest lady I ever loved was 1892, I think she was born. And she was an old school in Newburyport that we turned into a couple of high-end condominiums. But we really did rip the houses apart and put them back together again. And the thing is, I will always give kudos to my ex-partner, Pete, on this, was he ran the numbers as if there was nothing special about the exposure or anything else. Like the numbers were real. The real numbers in, the real numbers out. The profit, whether it was a skinny margin or a better margin, he stayed true to the numbers.
Look, can you flip a house in 3 weeks and make 40, 50 grand? Maybe. You can flip a contract and make 40 grand. And you can do that in 24 hours if you know what I know, right? So, reality TV had to create a story, had to create a show. And I allowed a goofball like me to have some fun. Iâd break the fourth wall all the time. The fourth wall is the camera. I got to break it all the time, just not talking to the camera. You know what I mean? Theyâre like, âYou canât do that.â And Iâd say, âKeep it in there. Itâs good.â So yeah, if youâre watching those shows, watch them for the show value, do not watch them for educational value because if youâre watching for educational value, youâre going to get your butt handed to you. Weâll watch them for show value and Iâll enjoy the pretty ladies. Enjoy the drama. Oh my God, the pipes burst! Letâs go to commercials. Right? You can play all of that as silly games if youâre hunting. Itâs a show, come on now.
Jay Conner (23:58):
I love it. Thanks for telling it like it is, Dave. After all, you are known as the âtell it like it is guy.â So both you and I, Dave, are big believers in the law of reciprocity. So 2 questions. Tell everybody, whatâs your definition of the law of reciprocity? And how does it apply to real estate investing?
Dave Seymour (24:20):
Yeah, thatâs such a good question. Look, man reciprocity, they actually did, like the intelligence psychoanalyst kind of guys and girls looked at reciprocity, and itâs part of our DNA. And our DNA says as homo sapiens, that if I do something for you that is perceived to be valuable, you in return will do something back for me. But donât bring value to someone with an expectation of value. Just give because giving is good, right? Start there. Our rewards are coming from high up above. Theyâre not always coming in the paycheck. You know what I mean? So reciprocity is just going out and being of service, I believe. I know a guy, who I see as the ultimate in reciprocity. I know a guy whoâs financially stable. This guy has a couple of boys. Theyâre now 11 and 9 years old.
And what this man does is he takes his children to Walmart the last 2 weeks before Christmas every year. And he will put down $5,000 at the layaway counter and tell the lady behind the counter, âPay down $5,000 worth of layaways, whatever comes up on your screen until those layaways are all paid off.â And he just shows his sons that. Thatâs reciprocity, this man. And Iâve had many, many, many conversations with him. And he says, âReciprocity has put me in a position to be financially free.â And the Law of Reciprocity says if I want to keep something, I have to give it away. Say that again. If you have something of value, if youâre going to keep it, then you have to give it away. Pass it on, is what we use for terminology. So thatâs my definition of reciprocity. And hereâs the other thing, man, when it comes to charity and giving them philanthropy, donât do it to get recognized, do something good for somebody else and then keep your mouth shut. Because that I believe is the definition of humility, which works side by side with reciprocity. So thatâs just my own philosophy on it. And itâs served me pretty well.
Jay Conner (26:37):
It reminds me of what Jesus told the Pharisees when theyâre out there praying in the public square, their arms lifted up and leg Jesus said, âGo pray in your closet and shut the door,â right? I love it. How does the law of reciprocity apply in real estate investing?
Dave Seymour (27:00):
Look, through coaching. Through passing it on. Through being humble. Okay? Thereâs a lot of ego in our industry, Jay. Letâs just be honest about it, right? âLook at me, Iâm the best. Iâve got a private jet. Iâve got a big house,â you know, all of that stuff. I donât believe that encompasses reciprocity. Reciprocity is an opportunity to give somebody a hand up, not give somebody a handout, right? When youâre in a position to share knowledge, knowledge is only powerful if implemented, right? So thatâs what I like about real estate reciprocity. And then we get to pass that along to our clients. To a homeowner in distress with whatever that situation is and the reciprocity in there works along the way of, âYou know what, that person knows somebody else.â And my reputation will always walk before me. Unfortunately, bad news travels faster than good news. We all know that. And if you make loud, good news with clients and let them speak your words afterwards, then reciprocity and momentum follows afterwards. So thatâs how I look at it, brother, right or wrong. Itâs certainly good.
Jay Conner (28:21):
I love it. Dave, what book have you gifted to other people more than any other book?
Dave Seymour (28:28):
Itâs âThe Secretâ by Rhonda Byrne. Law of attraction. And then my good friend, Jack Canfieldâs âSecrets of Success.â
Jay Conner (28:38):
Oh yes. My wife, Carol Joy, and I went to see him. Iâm looking at the certificate up here. We went to Jack Canfieldâs first event of his, that was The Breakthrough to Success. And I got so excited. I went back and paid the big bucks and got certified to teach Jack Canfield stuff because I just love it. Dave, I have just loved having you here on the podcast as we wind down. Do you have any parting comments or final advice that you would like to share with the audience and then be sure to tell the folks how they can get hold of you.
Dave Seymour (29:13):
Yeah, for sure. Itâs always interesting how you wrap up a conversation. For me, I think about the people who listened to us, Jay. What do they want? What are their needs? How can we serve them best? And I know it sounds kind of kitschy, but I always say, âTo thine own self, be true.â Is what youâve been doing working? Be honest with yourself. And if it hasnât, itâs okay to do something different. You donât have to know everything before you do anything. Take the first step. Educate, donât speculate. And find the people that are doing what you want to do at the highest level possible. Do your due diligence and then step into action. A lot of fantastic people sitting on couches, wishing and wanting and dreaming. But then thereâs a smaller population of guys like us who are out there actually doing it, right?
Not just teaching it, but weâre actually out there doing it as well. So step into your own greatness. And if you want to connect with us, if you want to learn anything about what we do at Freedom Venture Investments, I know Jayâs got a website that he can send you to there. Iâm old school, brother. You could pick up the phone and call us at (781) 922-4418. One of my team members will pick up the phone and connect to me if thatâs possible. I try to be as available as I can. So I just want to keep it moving forward, brother. Iâm the opposite of stale.

Useful and practical advice for everyone starting college
So... Yes, I graduated! To celebrate this, I thought it would be a good idea to pass on some knowledge to those new students starting college this year (I feel like a Senpai). If it was difficult for me, I cannot fathom how much difficult it's going to be for you guys starting this year with all the things happening around the world. So good luck and I hope this really helps you out!
Try to get along with everyone. Look, prior to entering college I was asocial AF. It's not that I was shy, I just didn't like hanging out with people. However, my time in college taught me that interaction IS a very important part of life. I will be forever thankful to my classmates, who approached me on my first day (I entered college mid-year with no experience in business or economics. I was completely clueless). They were very nice to me and tried their best to explained how the school works, what classes we will be taking, what the professors and exams are like and such. Without their help, I would have had a harder time trying to get used to college. Truth is, you WILL need help at several points in college. And if you're not on good terms with anyone, who will be willing to help you? No one. So don't be a jerk and try your best to be nice and genuine with everyone in the class.
Help your classmates. Just as you will need help, your classmates will also need help. Don't wait for them to ask you for help. Offer to help them if you can! This can help you make friends or find new study buddies. Do not underestimate the power of helping others. When you help people with something, it is very likely that they will help you back when you need to. They might even recommend you for a job or internship position just because you helped them.
Find one or two study buddies. Study buddies will make studying more bearable. The study material that you will get in college is nothing compared to high school. So having a few study buddies that can help you make summaries, explain and work together on assignments will make studying much easier! I remember I had a study buddy for one of my minors in which we had to learn 16 chapters. We divided the summary workload and took turns explaining the chapters we each summarized. We literally cut the study time in half because of this!
Keep in contact with your classmates and professors. Chances are you will be separated for some time during minors, study abroad programs or internships. But that doesn't mean you have to lose contact with them. I'm not saying you have to chat with them every day. But contacting them once in awhile is good. I have been able to help some of my classmates with some subjects and applications. I have also become one of my professor's running buddies. So keep in touch because you never know what good you can give and what good it might bring you!
Be persistent. I have had instances were my school coach has ghosted me AND the school completely. Putting my internship and thesis at risk. Shit happens. And when you see things taking a turn for the ugly, fight back with all you got to get things back on track. The truth is, college is a business. And it will continue with or without you. A bit toxic, yes. However, it is up to you to not let things go south! Take action. Contact your professor when needed. Contact the administration. Contact management. Be persistent!
Plan as soon as possible. Don't wait for the first class to get your curriculum and then plan a week later. Download the curriculum BEFORE going to that first class. Plan BEFORE Â going to the class. Bombard your professor with questions regarding the curriculum on the first day. Make changes accordingly. Execute that plan ASAP. Your worst enemy is time. But your best friend is also time. The sooner you start, the more prepared you will be for your exams. Read more about how I plan here.
Don't say "yes" to everything. Yes, I am guilty of this one. I learn fast. I'm young. I have lots of energy. I can do whatever I put my mind to. WRONG. This kind of thinking led me to severe burnout. I was helping my parents in their business. I was doing a full-time internship. I started my own business and had 9 clients. I was training for a marathon. Shit went down horribly at some point. I'm glad I went through that burnout because it taught me the importance and necessity to be balanced in life. And that my ability to say no is sometimes more important than my ability to say yes.
College is more than just learning theory. Look, classes are not the thing you should focus on solely in college. If there's anything more important than classes, I would say is your ability to network and leverage this to get experience in the field. That is what college is about. College opens so many opportunities, not because of what they teach, but because of the resources that you are able to get. I'm not saying go slack on your classes, but keep in mind that a lot of times, people don't hire because you have a perfect GPA.
Have a plan to be smart with your money AND stick with it. I had a plan to be smart with my money. And I did so for 3 years. But in my fourth year... I fucked up. Guys... stick to your financial plan and avoid goddamn headaches. Learn about budgeting,
Do not pull all-nighters. If anything all-nighters made me perform worse. Also, they completely messed up my sleeping schedule, which in return messed up my entire schedule. As a result, I would stress out because I was behind schedule and I did not have the energy to catch up. Guys, do not underestimate the power of a good night's sleep.
Time batching will be your best friend. Having a set day to do similar tasks is honestly, one of the best ways to work. One day I would do all my homework for the week. The other day I would only study. One day I would do all of my house chores etc. It's much simpler and effective this way.
Having a study routine will actually help you to pull a miracle. A lot of people swear by a morning or night routine. I swear by a study/ work routine. For real... why aren't work routines more common? Once I start my routine, my brain knows its time to work and study and will not get distracted. You can read about my study routine more in detail here.
You will get fat pretty fast, so exercise. You will not have a lot of time on your hands. You no longer have breaks to play sports, you don't need to go to gym class, you probably have a car now. Your sedentary life will pretty much begin in college. And because you have the money you will start eating out or order takeout. So EAT WELL AND WORKOUT. I realized that the weeks I ate healthily, were also the weeks I was more energized. So do these 2 things religiously.
Don't be too uptight. Relax and have fun. If you're the type A, teacher's pet kind of student... don't be afraid to loosen up a little bit. After my burnout episode I understood the importance of having fun once in awhile. Turns out that going to parties, clubs, having girls night out is a fun experience and you'll look back at those memories with fond!
Start applying for internships as soon as possible. THIS. Honestly. Apply early. Finding an internship position isn't hard. But finding the right internship place that will allow you to grow and learn and at the same time get along with the culture is MUCH MUCH MUCH harder! So take your time finding an internship. Go to as many interviews as you can. Don't accept the first internship position because it's the first you got. Look at it objectively and talk to others that work in that company. I had the opportunity to work for 2 days under the guidance of another intern before saying yes. Ask for a similar opportunity so you can test the waters before accepting the internship offer.
Taking care of yourself is harder than you think. Develop a routines. Stick to those routines. Develop a personal hygiene routine. A workout routine. Eat healthy. These things are easier said than done. Constantly work on these things. If you let one fall, others will start falling too. Self care is a work in progress so never stop improving yourself no matter how many deadlines you have!
Older students are a godsend. If you want to hear a goddamn unbiased opinion, please refer to an older student. The administration or professor might tell you a process or application goes a certain way, but the older students that went through it, know better as they literally had to go through it. The advice they will give you will be more practical than the advice the professors can give you. So listen to them carefully. They will also be able to help you with tips for exams, summaries or explaining. So be friends with them too!
Get a mentor. I was lucky enough to find 2 excellent mentors in my college journey. I became good friends with one of my professors, and she was the one that taught me all I know about personal investing. Honestly, she was the real MVP. Amazing professor, explanations were top notch, and really enjoyed her work. The second one, was my thesis coach. She helped me built my business and her expertise in the field helped me a lot in starting up. Don't be afraid to ask your professors or experts in the field to help you get started! Sometimes, they are eager to pass what they know unto someone. You got nothing to lose!

I call this a âsectionâ because it is not a separate part of the chapter in the book, but divided from the rest of the chapter by a scene break.

Chapter 15 - The Day the Empire Fell
Bethroen was a port town located in southwest Renais. After capturing Fort Rigwald, Ephraim's army continued their preparations to head towards Gradoâs capital city by ship.
Their march progressed smoothly. The only worry on Ephraimâs mind was Eirika, who was currently headed for Rausten.
The day before, the Frelian pegasus knights had told him the grave news that Carcino had betrayed them. Prince Innes was all alone at a fort on a plateau, and Eirika was headed his way to rescue him. Both the status of the prince and Eirikaâs safety were currently unknown.
Because theyâd thought that going to Rausten was the easier journey, heâd sent his sister out on that mission. It made Ephraim panic, but now that heâd come as far as he had, he couldnât go back. He continued to pray for his sister to stay safe, and with no further time to spare, he decided the only thing he could do now was hurry to Grado's capital to capture it.
First, they had to find an appropriate ship. Ephraim gave the command to his soldiers to procure a ship, then he received a message from a member of the reconnaissance team.
âLord Ephraim, the Grado Army is straight ahead of us!â
âSo theyâre on their way here?â Ephraim decided to put their ship search on hold for the time being and order everyone to prepare for battle.Â
However, the next piece of information was very strange.Â
âThe Grado Army is not coming this way. They are chasing someone.â
âWhoâŚ? A deserter?â Ephraim quickly climbed atop a tall cherry tree and scanned the area.
Just as it had been explained to him in the report, he saw the Grado Army chasing around a knight atop a horse. The knight was avoiding his pursuers with expert handling of his horse's reins, but they had him surrounded, and it was only a matter of time before they captured him.
The moment that Ephraim saw that sight, he realized the identity of the knight dodging the Grado soldiers. He shouted aloud without even thinking before he spoke, âThat⌠Thatâs General Duessel, isnât it!? Why is he being chased by the Grado ArmyâŚ?â
He knew absolutely nothing about the situation, but couldnât overlook his teacher when the man was in danger. Ephraim immediately changed his orders. They were now to prioritize rescuing General Duessel over fighting the Grado Army.
He also grabbed his own lance and ran towards Duessel. The crowd of Grado soldiers dispersed, and once he was within earshot, he called out his instructorâs name as loudly as he could.Â
When Duessel noticed him, he galloped his horse over to where Ephraim stood. He looked so different that Ephraim was at a loss for words. Both Duesselâs clothing and hair were in disarray, and he was breathing heavily. The general, once with a refined demeanor fit for royalty, now looked like an entirely different person.
âLord EphraimâŚ!â
"What happened, General Duessel? Why are you being chased by the Grado Empire? ...Nevermind, we can talk later. It's more important that we protect you. Come with me." Ephraim immediately started to turn around, but Duessel didn't move. Ephraim turned back around and said in an irritated tone, "What's wrong, General Duessel? You're surrounded here. Please come with me to my army."
"I am sorry, Lord Ephraim. You are my enemy to the bitter end. And no matter the circumstances, I cannot accept help from an enemy." Ephraim immediately started to give his argument, but Deussel shook his head with a heavy heart and interjected, "I am Deussel, the Obsidian. Ever since that title was bestowed upon me, I have sworn my loyalty to Grado and the emperor. I am running now only because I am to be executed, as His Majesty is questioning my loyalty. It is not to get help from you."
"Did you just say⌠executed? What the hell happened"
"There is nothing for me to tell you. Please retreat, Lord Ephraim."
"What will you do when you get away from the army?"
Duessel did not answer.
Ephraim, now all the more irritated, thumped his lance against the ground and shouted, "What's going on, General Duessel?! Tell me what happened!!"
"...No. I can't tell youâŚ"
"Why won't you talk no matter what? If that's the case, I have an idea too. I know it's selfish, but I will protect you."
"Lord EphraimâŚ" Duessel's face was frozen in utter astonishment.
Ephraim said to him with conviction, "It is because it is something I can do. Donât throw away your own life in front of me. You are my teacher. No matter the circumstances, I will not allow you to die. Even if I have to drag you along with me. Don't make this that difficult for me."
Duessel clenched his teeth in pain and looked at Ephraim.Â
Ephraim softened his words a little. âIâve heard rumors of the emperorâs descent into madness as well. And those who advised against his actions were his true retainers⌠isn't that right?"
"Yes. And so IâŚ"
âYou canât do anything by your own power alone. Do not choose this path you are on and be captured without resistance. Right now, even if you have to bear with the disgrace, please accept my assistance. The happiness of the Grado people is much more important than your honor, isn't it?"
Deussel's cheeks turned slightly red. Ephraim's sincere speech seemed to have hit home. The general clenched his jaw, then nodded. "...You're right. I've been showing you my embarrassing side. I will entrust these old bones to you. The countless evil deeds that the Grado Army has committed⌠Take me with you, and help me atone for all of them."
With Deussel added to their ranks, the Grado Army was no match for Ephraim's army. The battle ended with hardly anyone on their side becoming injured.
Ephraim and Deussel first found an inn in a port town to rest in. After Deussel cleaned himself up, his face was still pale, but his expression calmed. "You've grown up, Lord Ephraim. When I taught you the lance, you were just a boy who hated losing."
"It is because of your guidance. General Duessel, please, I want you to talk to me. Why were you discharged from the imperial army?â
Duessel was silent for a long while, but when Ephraim pushed him one last time, he finally opened his heavy mouth to speak. â...His Majesty ordered me to kill you.â
Ephraimâs expression froze, and he nodded. He had of course expected that to be the case.
âNothing could get me to agree to this war. It might have been only a matter of time before the countries of Magvel started fighting with each other, but this war is not for a just cause. It is an invasion, and nothing more. A war like this makes not only the people of Renais, but also Grado, suffer⌠I said that to His Majesty, but he did not listen to me. Or should I say⌠it made him question my loyalty.â
Ephraim knew that Duessel was more deeply loyal to Emperor Vigarde than anyone else who served him. He could easily imagine just how painful it would be for the emperor to question his loyalty.
âAnd so, I decided to do as I was ordered and set out to kill you. Please forgive me.â
âThere is no need for you to apologize. It is just something you would do as a general of the Grado Army.â
âBut his Majesty really did doubt me. Selena went with me under the guise of my assistant.â
âSelena⌠The general known as âFluorspar.ââ
âYou are correct. She is a woman with a powerful sense of justice. She had doubts about this war from the very beginning as well, just as Glen and I did. But she is also a Grado soldier⌠she could not disobey His Majestyâs orders either. Selena insisted that I go kill you immediately, but I was still hesitant. I wanted to talk to you if at all possible⌠If I could, then we might be able to avoid a pointless fight. That is what I insisted upon.â
Ephraim and Eirika planned to avoid fighting whenever possible, and so had Duessel. That reassured Ephraim, but at this point, it was also stressful.
âAnd with that, I was branded a traitor. Selena accused me of the crime of betrayal, and told me to immediately drop my weapon. If I resisted, then I would be executed. I did not fear death. If I did not have the resolve to sacrifice my life for His Majesty, then I never would have become a soldier. But I couldnât allow myself to be executed for groundless suspicions of my loyalty. His Majesty is walking the wrong path. Until I successfully advise him to choose otherwise, I cannot die. With that conviction in my heart, I ran from my pursuers, but⌠it seems that I was lacking a bit in my usual composure. Your words have opened my eyes. There really is no way that I can do anything on my own. I will bear with my humiliation, and lend my power to Renais.â
With that explanation, Ephraim knew exactly why Duessel had run from the Grado Army. Things were worse than he imagined. For the emperor to question his most trusted retainer meant that his descent into madness was much further along than Ephraim had suspected.
âSo is General Selena close by here now?â
âNo, as I understand, as soon as I escaped, she received orders to return to the capital. What is His Majesty intending to do by scattering the generalsâŚ? Even if he is doing it on a whim, it is still an absolute mystery."
âGeneral Duessel. I can't help but think that the emperor's personality has changed to its very core. What happened in the capital? Isnât there anything that comes to mind?â
Deussel furrowed his brow at Ephraim's question.Â
Ephraim guessed what he might have that he wanted to talk about, and waited.
Deussel's hesitancy over whether or not he should say anything likely came from the fact that he had not yet abandoned his loyalty to the emperor. It wasnât impossible. Even if he had been branded a traitor, he wasnât the type of person to have a sudden change of heart.
After a long pause, Duessel finally opened his mouth. âI have no way of confirming whether or not this is related to the emperor's change of heart, but⌠there is something that has worried me for a long time."
âWhat kind of thing is it?â
âThis happened quite some time ago, but⌠Prince Lyon and the mages said one day that they had successfully made the Dark Stone. The prince was unusually excited about it."
"What is this 'Dark Stone?'"
I do not know. But they said that it is an amazing stone even more powerful than the Sacred Stones. Now that I look back on it, I think that was the day that the emperor started to change."
Ephraim was deep in thought. If that story was true, then this Dark Stone was what was negatively influencing the emperor.
"...Ephraim."
He heard a small voice. It was Myrrh. He'd put everyone else in rooms far away from this one, but she was different. Just taking his eyes off her worried him, so he had told her to always stay close by.
"What is it, Myrrh?"
"I have felt an ominous energy coming from the capital for a very long time now. That energy twists people's hearts. No matter how good they may be, it will turn anyone into a bad personâŚ"
"...Is that true?"
Was the Dark Stone the source of this "ominous energy" that Myrrh was talking about? It would mean that they would have to destroy the Dark Stone to save the emperor.
"General Deussel, where is the Dark Stone now?"
"Prince Lyon should have it. He hasn't put it down for even a second ever since that day."
"...So that would mean there's a chance the Dark Stone has also had an effect on Lyon as well, correct? Has Lyon changed at all?"
"WellâŚ" Duessel seemed to be even more baffled by this question. Once he was finally done thinking, he shook his head.
"No, I don't think that he has. He stays holed up in his room even more now, but that's probably because he is fervently studying the Dark Stone. On the occasion that he has shown his face to us, he is the same kind prince that he always has been. Even if he has not clearly stated it, I believe that this war is weighing heavily upon his heart."
"I understand." Ephraim breathed a sigh of relief.
"So, as we thought, our march towards the capital is the key. I want to meet him and talk to him. If we were to combine our strength, then I strongly believe that we could return the emperor to normal."
"I will go with you." Duessel's tone was full of conviction.Â
Ephraim looked him in the eyes, and asked, âWe will be fighting the Grado Army. Are you okay with that?â
âI have already been branded a traitor. To worry about that at this point is futile. More than anything else⌠I want His Majestyâs heart to return to what it once was. If you figure out the mysteries of the Dark Stone, then surely His Majesty will be freed from the terrible curse he is under. To accomplish that, I am prepared to resign myself to my fate as a disloyal servant." Duessel said word by word, slowly trying to convince himself of what he was saying. âBefore that, thereâs just one thing Iâd like to ask. You might think of it as a shameless request, butâŚâ
âWhatever it is, Iâll hear it.â
âItâs about my subordinates. There are some that still did not abandon me, even after I was branded a traitor. Their numbers are few, but⌠I was wondering if you would let them do as they wish. If there are any soldiers that want to serve you, I want you to welcome them. And I want you to let those who say they wish to return to Grado do so. It is a selfish request⌠but I want to reward them for their loyalty however I can.â
âGeneral Duessel, you really are my teacher.â Ephraim laughed. âThe soldiers that serve you are yours. I wonât interfere with them. All of you may do as you wish.â
âThank you, Lord Ephraim.â Now that one of Deusselâs worries was gone, his face relaxed.
He left the room and explained to his soldiers what Ephraim had said to him, then told them to consider themselves free to do as they wanted from here on out. None of them said they wanted to return to Grado. Every single soldier was prepared to tie in their fates with General Duesselâs.
Together with their new allies, Ephraimâs army finally set out on a ship. Their destination was the shore opposing Bethroen, Port Taizel. That put them in Grado territory already, and just a few days' distance away from the capital.

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Mary Ruth Keller
Mary Ruth Keller has 42 stories at Gossamer, plus her stories are at AO3. She's written a number of short standalone stories, but she's thought through the X-Files mythology and written about it probably as much as anybody ever has. So if you want to dive into the mythology and all its drama, you need to go read her mythology fics ASAP. (But read this long, interesting interview first!) Big thanks to Mary Ruth for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
Quite frankly, yes. The Kuxan Sum Cycle branches off the actual series following the Third Season episode Syzygy. I took the myth-arc as it stood at that time, post Nisei-731, and the agents in mid-Rift. Although I didnât quite realize it when I started out, I was most interested in moving the myth-arc forward in a continuously unfurling narrative, one where Scully and Mulder became an effective investigative team who support each other as partners and friends again. After I started writing in my little corner of the X-F universe in 1996, there was a lot of stuff on the show that just happened, with no real storytelling logic to it I could fathom, but that seemed to be popular. I stopped writing in 2000 because I was frantically busy at my new job (which consumed far too many twelve-plus-hour workdays and weekends) and because my sister and I were trying to take care of my elderly, increasingly frail, Mother. So, I never expected, when I started writing in 2018 and posting again in 2019 (I reposted all my stories, in order, to AO3 and fanfiction.net, because Chermera would never have made sense without them) for readers to take an interest in myth-arc and character issues that the series writers had simply abandoned to go chase, well, anything else, especially if it made no coherent sense whatsoever. What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
The fandom was a lot of fun. There were many interesting, engaging discussions I took part in with other fans of the show, some of whom I am still in touch with.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
All of the above. I spent a lot of time discussing writing and characters with other writers on ATXC, except when I was actively working on my novels. Since I was doing basic research into microwave remote sensing of the Earth while working at the Naval Research Laboratory at the time â yes, I was one of those dreaded Department of Defense scientists the show had a love/hate relationship with â my writing happened at night and on weekends. Novels, especially the longer ones, take me about a year from first words on disk until release, which meant I didnât have all the time to participate on-line as I would have otherwise. But, I enjoyed chatting with the fellow denizens of the Endies Board, and on the EMXC, Scullyfic, and Je Souhaite mailing lists. Iâve saved some of those posts and conversation threads on my older computers, where itâs fun re-reading them from time to time. What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
There were a lot of generous, funny, very intelligent fans involved with X-F back then (not that there arenât now; there are, of course). I started writing because I wanted to get the myth-arc and the characters back on-track, the long-term story moving forward and the agents again being the smart investigators I loved hanging out with on Friday nights. But, outside of having read a lot of myth, literature, fiction, and non-fiction, I didnât know enough about the mechanics of writing fiction. Several authors were willing to help out, some explicitly through E-mail conversations, and some from general comments about crafting stories that were posted to ATXC. I had a real problem with how I initially handled dialog, which I had some E-mail guidance on, that was very much appreciated. I also had two quite diligent beta readers, one an on-line fan, and one a real-life friend, both male, who helped me with the direction of the Scully-Mulder half of Anath. I was, at the time, utterly exasperated with how the pair of them had become such complete morons on the series, both totally incapable of investigating anything successfully, which was affecting my writing the characters in that story. Â What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show? Ooh, boy. Iâd like to say I started watching with the show with the Pilot, but I didnât, quite. Tom Shales was the Washington Post TV critic at the time the Pilot aired â yes, not only was I a government scientist, I was living in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1992. He was intrigued by the characters and premise and found Duchovny and Anderson engaging while playing their roles. At the time, I was wrapped up trying to work on a PhD while still employed at NRL, so I tucked the review away, waiting until I had Friday nights free to check it out. Iâm a great lover of science fiction, so I thought to give the show a try, eventually. [Lilydale note: I found a couple things Tom Shales wrote about The X-Files premiere in 1993: Fall 1993 TV preview article and a âPilotâ episode review.]
The first episode I sat down to watch was the First Season Darkness Falls, where Mulder and Scully get trapped at the logging camp with the Earth Firster, Doug Spinney, the logging executive, Steve Humphries, the Forest Ranger, Larry Moore, and the gooey green bugs. I was amazed by that story. It was as perfect a little piece of science fiction as I have seen on TV (except for one bit toward the end), with an environmental moral to it as well, where all the characters make good and bad choices, and they all suffer or succeed because of them.
What hooked me, really hooked me, were the first/second acts, specifically, Dana Scullyâs actions, once they find the desiccated logger in the tree. The investigation is handled logically, in that itâs not the big male agent who goes shinnying up the trunk to look at the evidence while everyone else stands around watching and wailing, âWhatever shall we do!â No, itâs little Dana Scully who takes the ride to the upper branches. This made oodles of sense, in that she was this tiny woman whom two men could lever up that far with a rope, a hand winch, and pulleys. When she gets there, after grimacing (who wouldnât, considering what she saw), she starts investigating. She does an on-the-spot post-mortem exam, while Mulder makes an ooky male-body-parts joke, but everyone takes her results seriously. I was thrilled. Here was a female character I could really relate to, someone who could hold her own in a difficult situation, unlike most of those on the tube, then or now.
I made a point, over the following summer, of watching as many re-runs as I could, catching up on the episodes and characters. The stories ran to science fiction and horror, which are my preference. Further, although there was an emphasis on the paranormal, several of the first season episodes were written so both Mulderâs wanting-to-believe-but-needing-proof intuitive, emotional approach and Scullyâs logical, scientific, justice-oriented viewpoint each got the narrative coherently from initial crime to identifying and apprehending a suspect. It was some spectacular, complex writing, and I was hooked, hopelessly hooked. I discuss this some on my old author web-page, which still exists, courtesy of the Wayback machine), so I wonât belabor it. What got you involved with X-Files fan-fic? The shenanigans within the Third Season, quite honestly. The myth-arc wasnât moving forward, as it had during the Second Season, which I really couldnât understand. Carter had given us this bang-up start in the ABC Trilogy with all these new fictional possibilities to explore, but instead, bupkis. The MOTWâs were retreads with no depth or moral/ethical weight to them, except for Darinâs stories. The intelligent agents I had enjoyed spending time with while they pursued their oddball investigations were evaporating before my eyes. Mulder had always been this deeply intuitive character who cared about others and knew he could get it wrong, so needed Scullyâs logic in their investigations, even if he didnât always want to hear her observations and questions. But that character was being replaced by a cookie-cutter misunderstood anti-hero, who wasnât thinking, just running off to chase butterflies, who was always right because he was The Guy. Scully, as an investigator, the little agent who could, was simply being sidelined. Sure, sheâd argue with Mulder, but the writers had stopped giving her and her logical viewpoint a real role in their cases, Darin excepted, again. As the series went on, the Agent and Doctor Dana Scully I respected was replaced with this snappish little female whose only notable skill was running in high heels, who spent her time standing around with her arms crossed, and made pruney faces at Mulder if she were required to do any actual investigating. I hated that character, but, apparently, the all-male writing staff just loved her.
I knew about the on-line fandom, so I thought to check out if anybody else had noticed these âimprovements.â First, I spent time at ATXF, discussing the changes with the series, that disturbed a lot of folks, not just me. Eventually, I tripped onto ATXC. There were writers there who understood the two characters, quite well, but werenât that interested in the other problems with the show that bothered me deeply.
Like many fan-fiction writers, I decided to try to bring in, or in my case, bring back, what I was missing in what was being aired. Sins of the Fathers was the result. As I mentioned above, it was a far from perfect story, but I learned much putting it together, and it got a lot of positive feedback. So I kept writing and trying to improve what I wrote. Folks appreciated it, then and now, surprisingly, which was endless encouragement to keep going. What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom? With work and my Mom, as I mentioned above, I dropped out for a few years. My new job is still microwave remote sensing of the Earth, at a University-affiliated laboratory, not working directly for the government, but the NASA/NSF-type funding for the research I like to do is much harder to come by, so it takes up a lot more of my time to keep funded and working. Adding to that, I havenât found places like ATXC in the 90âs or the Endies Board, but I suppose lightning only strikes once. Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
Not really, no. Iâve enjoyed other TV series, but, I never felt those shows were just throwing away essential parts of themselves as X-F did, or, if they went bad, I simply stopped watching them. A fandom is, or can be, a huge time commitment, which, as Iâve noted, I donât have that much of. I discuss this quite extensively in my authorâs notes at the end of Chermera, so I wonât repeat myself. [Lilydale note: the long author notes are at the end of the storyâs last chapter, not in the AO3 notes section.] Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
As a child, I loved reading myths and legends from many different cultures. So many amazing stories, so much that touches on truth. Greek myth, Norse legends, Islamic tales, Celtic fables, all of them. It goes without saying that discovering Tolkienâs fully-realized Middle Earth in my early teens was like falling into an river of endless delights.
In literature, perhaps the character I enjoy most is Sherlock Holmes. On television/in movies, Iâd have to say: Beverly Crusher, (early) Dana Scully, Susan Ivanova of Babylon 5, Paâu Zotoh Zhaan and (early) Aeryn Sun on Farscape, Samantha Carter on Stargate SG-1, Hermione Granger, and most recently, Lagertha on Vikings. Dunno, there might be a pattern there. Possibly. Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
Yes, absolutely. I started rewatching the series when it ran on BBC America, enjoying the first two seasons again. Iâd actually never stopped thinking about Mulder and Scully; I just lost the time to write about them, until two years ago, when I managed to land some long-term funding so I wasnât staying up nights writing proposals every few months. Iâd have a thought about how to advance the story that became Chermera, so Iâd make a mental note and play with it in my head. I also have two more novels and a satyr play left to go in the sequence of stories I want to write, so Iâm turning over plot-lines and potential arcs in my head all the time. Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom? I do read X-F fan-fic. Since the series has wandered so far away from what engaged me, and most fan-fic keeps up with that, I donât read very much. As far as other fandoms, one was enough. Do you have any favorite X-Files fan-fic stories or authors?
Reaching back into the dark ages, Iâd say Pellinor and Nascent. They may both be available on Gossamer. [Lilydale note: Fortunately, they are!] What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise? Zurvan is the favorite of my older stories. It, like Twelfth Night (Denha on AO3 to avoid confusion with another X-F story named Twelfth Night), builds on the past stories in their trilogies and brings the overall arc to new places. Itâs fun to uncover surprises when writing and develop challenges to address in the future, which both of those stories did. Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
Iâd certainly like to. I had planned to write three trilogies with their satyr plays, each of them focusing on an aspect of the mythical Triple Goddess: Maiden, Matron, and Crone, in the X-F universe. Only, being me, I turned it around. Sandra Ann Miller (Samantha) is the Maiden, but Iâve just started telling that part of the arc with the transitional Anath and the first trilogy story Chermera. Iâm approaching this trilogy as a coherent tale spread across the three novels, which is different from the other two. The Caroline Lowenberg Trilogy didnât really get organized until Twelfth Night. It was only the third story Iâd ever written, so perhaps I can be excused. The Dana Scully Trilogy was all interconnected, but that was more of an organic, rather than a pre-planned and deliberate, effort. I didnât really grasp the full arc of what I was creating there until I was writing Chermera and looked back over the threads running from Rustic Suite through Anath. The next story in the Sandra Ann Miller Trilogy involves the exposure of the Japanese arm of the Consortium, but, I need to read up on Japanese history, myths and legends, and world view before I write it. After finishing and posting Chermera, thatâs what Iâve been doing. The conflict between Amaterasu, the Sun goddess, and her neâer-do-well brother Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the god of, among other things, storms, marriage, and love, as told in the Kojiki and the Nihongi (both written down in their near-final forms at the same time as we in the West were just recording the first skeletal versions of the Arthurian Legends), will definitely get worked into the Sandra Ann Miller Trilogy. Iâm starting to put the arcs and plot-lines together, but, Iâm not ready to begin writing yet. Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work? As Iâve discussed, I do. Part of why I take my time is because Mulder and Scully are owed real, challenging cases to solve - the two intelligent agents with their own approaches, strengths, and weaknesses, remember. Partly, because I have original fiction ideas Iâd like to pursue. Trying to do the best I possibly can in the sheltered world of X-F where I attempt to create stories with universal themes, well-realized settings, coherent plot-lines, and original characters who resonate with my readers is practice for the original fiction. Iâll never write the Great American Novel (whatever that is), but Iâd like to write stories that are as good as I can make them and fun for my readers, so I keep plugging. Where do you get ideas for stories? Reading and thinking, mostly. I try to look for ideas that havenât been done to death, or different approaches to old themes. I have four original novels I scribble mental notes on. After I bring this myth-arc Iâve been working on to its (to me) logical resolution, I hope Iâll be able enough of a writer to get started on them. What's the story behind your pen name? Actually, itâs my real name. At the time I started writing, I didnât think to do anything else. On ATXC and Gossamer, I wrote several of the shorts that are separate from the Kuxan Sum Cycle under the pen name Lise Meitner. She was a Twentieth Century theoretical physicist who explained nuclear fission, then was cut out of a Nobel prize because the judges of her day thought Marie Curie and Irene Joliot-Curie were âenoughâ women physicists working in radioactivity to be so honored. [Lilydale note: hereâs her Wikipedia page. Among many other fascinating things talked about there, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize 48 times in two different categories and had the 109th chemical element, meitnerium, named after her. She also escaped Nazi Germany in a plot involving trains, boats, planes, and an emergency diamond ring. You really ought to read about her.] Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
Iâd shared the first five of my novels with my family back in 1996. They liked them, my sister especially. Iâm not sure they knew what to make of them. I havenât shown them to my in-laws, but, I think my sister-in-law found them on her own. We havenât discussed them, as they arenât her usual preference, which is Romance. One distant blood relation was thrilled to discover them on-line and wrote me about them. My sister, though, is my (self-admitted) biggest fan. When we were kids, she and I shared a bedroom, where Iâd make up stories to tell her at night so she could fall asleep. She and I correspond regularly by E-mail (sheâs in Florida and Iâm in Maryland). Back while I was working my way through Chermera, she asked out of the blue if I was ever going to write any more. She was thrilled to hear I had been but she doesnât have regular Internet access other than at her job. I made printed, bound copies of all my stories to mail to her last Christmas. She loves them, bless her. Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Iâve sent Chermera to Gossamer, but, it hasnât been updated since July 2018. All the rest of the stories are there.
At AO3, my stories are under: https://archiveofourown.org/users/mrkeller. The Kuxan Sum Cycle is linked together at: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1555492.
Iâve published the Lise Meitner stories under my own name there: Faustus Mulder; Late Night Thoughts on Evolution, Hard Times, and Lost Pets; You Just Donât Understand; and Lux Perpetua. Since I could separate out the trilogies into their own cycle, it just made sense.
At fan-fiction.net, theyâre under: https://www.fanfiction.net/~maryruthkeller
Again, the Lise Meitner stories are under my own name. Since fanfiction.net doesnât have a linked series option like AO3, Iâve added a header to all eleven of the stories in the Kuxan Sum Cycle so far explaining the order. The novels all are tagged with thumbnail versions of the covers I made for them. Also, the literary quotes I started each chapter and begin and end each story with, are kept in the AO3 versions, but are removed at fanfiction.net to avoid potential copyright issues. Shakespeare, Christine de Pisan, the Popol Vuh, the Ugaritic myths around Anath, and others are all long out of, or never were in, copyright, of course, but, just to be on the safe side, Iâm following fanfiction.netâs rules.
If folks care to write, Iâm still at my old eclipse address: [email protected]. Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
Enjoy it, use it as an opportunity to make connections and expand your horizons as a storyteller. Fan-fiction was much more of a home-grown effort back in the 90âs than it is now, when there are how-to books, of all things. But, donât get so wrapped up one forgets about real life. Thatâs where all the best stories are.

Given that Rey is Palpatineâs grandaughter and also a scavenger of old imperial ships I think that she should have been really good with information, lore, and history, rather than good at fixing droids and ships and stuff. Luke was able to fix c-3po and r2rd2 because thatâs what he did, as a farmhand; he tended to machines, and fixed robots. It also drew a parallel to Anakin, who was also really good with machines, good with ships, grew up on tatooine, etc. But I doubt that the decision to make Rey a descendant of palpatine was made by the first film, and it opens up some new Ideas for me as to her character.
Firstly, the similarities between Luke and Rey, in my mind, kind of end beyond desert planet and dead parents. Luke has a family, he works as a farmboy for a vital resource, heâs got a stable, safe life(at first). Rey apparently has no one, she scavenges old ships for stuff that apparently is only worth several bits of rations, I donât see any motive for her to waste valuable time and resources fixing up robots and stuff that donât appear to help her when sheâs out and scavenging. I think it would be more interesting if, instead of trying to copy Luke and Anakinâs origins story, they leaned more heavily on how sheâs looting and exploring a dead empire. Because sheâs Palpatineâs descendant, she should have a natural curiosity for history, and the lore behind the ship.
The scene where she helped Han fix his own ship couldâve been improved. Iâm not saying sheâs a mary sue or whatever, but I think itâs a little weird she fixed in five seconds what Han couldnât on the ship he had been flying for decades. It made her look smart, sure, but did that by making Han seem like a doddering old fool. I think it wouldâve been better if she helped Han navigate through the ruin of a star destroyer in a chase scene, or gave an imperial access code to an ancient door that still takes it. For example, we could start out with her coming back to an old spot, clearly marked by a clean spot on the floor contrasting with the dust around her. She hooks up a battery she traded some valuable pieces for, and plays the scene.
A general, sending a message to his officer. Something about the tactics the officer is to execute when facing rebellion ships. Sheâs already seen the scene a hundred times, but she felt reassured by the confidence of the general. She also needed to eat lunch. A couple of rations bubbled to life in the corner as the face the voice belonged to flickered into view, round features, obviously a man from comfort. His hollow, yet intense eyes betrayed his deadly experience from a long career sustained by the nurturing destruction of war.
â...-not hold their own. They will employ hit and run tactics, meant to confuse you, draw your fighters away from the ship, and then disable the command center.â The frustrated edge in his voice told Rey just how successful this tactic was. âKeep the TIE fighters close. Establish a perimeter around the ship. The goal is a long, battle of attrition. This, they cannot win. If-â The officerâs voice cut in.
âBut what if they attack a target that cannot be lost, say, a capital ship that has had its defenses temporarily disabled?â
âIf their attention shifts to another essential target, pursue them. Do not fail. Hokar out.â The last of the rations popped from their packaging, startling Rey back to the dusty reality.
Then, later, she sees Han attempt that old republic tactic, unsuccessfully. She remembers what she saw, what she knows. She tells Han that, instead of faking fleeing, he should target some vital support systems left exposed during construction. He does so, and it draws their enemy out from their post. Han uses the superior speed and maneuverability of the falcon to lead them through somewhere they couldnât follow, and then blast off, escaping with whatever they had, whether thatâs their lives or some valuables. Isnât that better? Isnât that better than throwing a beloved character under the bus to build up her ethos? It would also establish her as smart, quick on her feet, wise, with a long memory, and she knew how to use it, like a certain other senator.
Then, Palpatine. Palpatine achieved what all the legions of Sith before him could not; he destroyed the Jedi order. But not by might alone, he schemed and manipulated into making people make the wrong decisions. We could have the same thing happen with Rey! Once she is looked to for guidance, she comes up with a plan in the midst of battle. She stages a dramatic scene, prolonged fighting and losses making her doubt herself. But, just in the nick of time, the first order falls for the trick, and extends its face right where Rey wanted it to, and destroys it. The enemy is routed that day, and those beside her both celebrate her ingenuity, and ponder on what would happen if it was used against them.
Palpatine ate of the tree of knowledge, and knew death. He used that knowledge to darken hearts and promote himself to emperor. Near the ultimate climax, Rey will also receive knowledge, dark and terrible. She will see prophecies of her friends dying, histories of those that had come before her and failed, visions of the present dire situation. Having hope, she dismisses these. But, the dark side tries again. It tempted Palpatine over with promises of power and rule, and so it will try that same method with Rey. Isnât she tired of not being the one in control? Doesnât she want to wrest control from the blinding light, and plunge the galaxy in a soothing darkness, a darkness she controlled directly? She will not have friends, or a family, but they will be weak to the power she wields. She will not be given a choice, but will instead find herself on the same path Palpatine and Anakin were on, and failed. She will start to wrest control for herself, greedily hoarding information, doling it out when it suited her.
But, her vision extends beyond his. She will see that it takes many pairs of eyes to take in a complete picture, many men talking to each other to describe an elephant. Life should be lived with others, not alone as Palpatine aspired to, surrounded by equals, not placed above them, blah blah blah, light side crap. She will choose the harder path in a climactic scene/lightsaber battle, proving herself stronger for climbing the bloodied steps to the light. I could probably put this whole thing into a step-by-step heroâs journey type thing, but thatâs a bit too much effort for me.
thx for reading, talk to me if you disagree or whatever.

Blog Post #2
https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/lawyer-case-black-inmate-set-die-reveals-racial-732109591. Â Â Please find THREE articles that pertain to your civic action issue; one article should be from a liberal leaning source, one should reflect conservative media bias, and one should be objectiveâfrom an impartial source. *Please refer to the media bias spectrum chart posted on Canvas as a guide to finding articles. *DO NOT analyze sources from extreme media bias sites or fake news sites.
2. Â Â SACAPS EACH article and provide a link or URL to each article analyzed. Please review the SACAPS template posted on Canvas last week for additional guidance. SACAPS:Â
SUBJECT what is the main point the source is trying to convey? What is the central message of the document?  Â
AUTHOR who authored the source? Google search the author if needed.  What are their credentials? What social, economic, or political affiliations does the author have which may have an impact on their argument or objectivity? CONTEXT where and when was the source produced? How might this affect the meaning of the source?Â
AUDIENCE who published the source and for whom was the source created? How might this affect the reliability and objectivity of the source?Â
PERSPECTIVE is the text objective (neutral or fair point of view) or is it subjective (biased or one-sided)? If the article is objective, identify the competing perspectives presented in the article. Which perspective do you agree with and why? If the article is subjective, identify the authorâs claim.  Do you agree or disagree and why?
SIGNIFICANCE what is the evidence used to support the authorâs claim or competing perspectives; what verifiable facts are presented?
3. Â Â What are the similarities and differences between these three accounts of your issue?
4. Â Â Finally, which source do identify with most and why?
Article #1:Â https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/lawyer-case-black-inmate-set-die-reveals-racial-73210959Â (Liberal Leaning)
S: The main subject about this article is to tell the story of a Black man who murdered a White couple and then ask why didnât the officers who shot Breonna Taylor didnât get any charges.
A: The author is Michael Tarm. He is a AP Legal Affairs Writer. He has also written for many different news outlets including Conservative Leaning, Fox News.
C: The article was written for ABC news on September 24th, 2020. It can affect how people react to the shooting of Breonna Taylor, maybe to sway people to call for the death penalty for the cops that shot her.
A: ABC news published the article. The reliability of the source is a 50/50 because after the first half of the article it subtly starts to turn into a opinion article but, steers away from an opinion.
P: The article is very Liberal leaning because, it questions the police force and claims that the legal process to determined who gets put on death row is against black people because the cops that shot Breonna didnât get any charges but the black man who murdered a White couple got sentenced to death.
S: The sources for the article was the recent execution of a Black man in Indiana. And possibly evidence from the murder scene from when the crime was originally committed.
Article #2: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-executions/u-s-to-carry-out-fifth-federal-execution-after-17-year-pause-idUSKBN25O2JA?feedType=mktg&feedName=topNews&WT.mc_id=Partner-Google (Objective)
S: The main subject of this story is to talk about how Capital Punishment has been given the OK to continue after a 17 year break. It also talks about the legal process of sentencing one to death.
A: The author is Johnathan Allen. He is a book writer and a writer for NBC News it looks like.
C: The article was written for Reuters on August 28th, 2020. It could help give people a better understanding about what legal processes have to be done in order to put someone on death row. The article could be very informative since the Death Penalty has been recently legalized again by President Trump.
A: Reuters has published the article. The reliability of the article is 100%, I was very surprised with how unbiased this article stayed throughout the whole thing. It was packed with information, direct quotes, and facts.
P:The article is very unbiased because, it gives very reliable facts, direct quotes, and lots of background information on the subject. The article does not mention race or whether the death penalty is fair or not. It just talks about the legal process and who got sentenced to death.
S: The sources for this article comes from the Court discussing the persons process to be sentenced and direct quotes from everyone involved in the issue.
Article #3:Â https://dailycaller.com/2019/12/03/scotus-daniel-lee-death-penalty/Â (Conservative Leaning)
S: The main story of the the article talks about how the Trump Administration had asked the Supreme Court to legalize the Death Penalty again, and Continued to kinda justify why is was a good thing to do without directly trying to justify it.Â
A: The Author is Kevin Daley, a Republican Senate member in the state of Michigan.Â
C: The article was written for the Daily Caller on December 3rd, 2019. It doesnât have too much significance now, because a lot has happened since then. But when it first came out it probably was a big thing since the decision to reboot the death penalty was recently passed.
A: Daily Caller had published the article. the Reliability is maybe 50/50, it give some good information about the process of bringing back the death penalty and how the Left wing was against it. But, it also hinted towards why this was a good decision by President Trump, kinda turning it into an opinion article.
P: The article is biased because it hints towards Justifying why the Trump foundation was right for rebooting the death penalty and why the Left wing need to back off and how they were wrong.
S:The source of this article comes from the people that was a part of the decision and Mr. Barr.
3) They all are similar because they give the background to Capital Punishment and some of the legal processes that happens behind the scenes. They all are different because two of the three articles almost indirectly give a little bit of their opinion on what they think about what happened.
4) I liked the 2nd Source because it was the most informative source out of the three and I really learned a lot from it. It taught me the most out of the three articles that I read in total.

------------------------------------------------
Chapter Thirty-Six: Retâurcye mhi
I knew immediately that I wasnât really in the room I was seeing. There was a haziness to it, blurring the edges of my vision as if I was squinting hard. The room reminded me of the control center on the Republic frigates, with a holographic console in the center. However, instead of rows upon rows of computers and military personnel, the room expanded into a type of amphitheater. Benches encircled the room, rising up to various levels until they ended at doors on all sides. All of which were closed and locked, it seemed.Â
I was standing a few rows up, looking down at a group of creatures clad in jedi robes. I recognized the clean-shaven head of Windu immediately, watching his brow crease as he spoke quietly with a little green jedi--Yoda.Â
Others stood around that I recognized only slightly from either brief encounters, discussions with Anakin and Obi-wan, or from reports I read as a bounty hunter. There was a Twiâlek with magnificent blue skin, her expression passive as she eyed the holoprojector as if she were waiting for it to engage. There was also a female Tholothian, who stood beside a Nautolan I didnât know. Still, the smile he gave his companion jarred my memory. Iâd seen his likeness painted on a Republic attack shuttle, along with the Auberesh words, âService with a smile.â Fisto. Even bounty hunters knew about him.
The holoprojector hummed to life, revealed more jedi, all standing rather rigid. Some I recognized, such as Plo Koon and Shaak Ti. Others, I didnât. In the end, there were a total of eleven jedi, both physically present and holographically beamed in.
Iâd never seen so many jedi in one place before. It actually unnerved me.
My nerves only got worse when a final hologram appeared, revealing Obi-wan, Anakin standing behind him silently. Anakinâs face was drawn in worry, as if he was lost in deep thought.
âObi-wan,â Windu started, drawing the attention of all jedi present. âYou called an emergency meeting. What happened with Dooku?â My heart stopped at his words. It was a Jedi Council meeting. Something told me, from Winduâs words, that the meeting was about me.
Obi-wan fidgeted slightly, glancing back to exchange a sad look with Anakin before speaking to the Council. âHe escaped, as he has in the past. But my report is not of how we lost him, but how we survived him.â
Yoda hummed lowly, leaning on his cane. âMoved, the Force has. Felt it, we did.â
âYes, Master Yoda,â Obi-wan said respectfully. âAnakin and I had been captured, as well as all of our men. Kida kept everyone from being executed, ourselves included.â
âHow was she not captured with the rest of the army?â Shaak Tiâs hologram asked, her accented voice soft, but strong.
âHer ship had been shot down amidst our battle, Master,â Anakin jumped into the conversation, seeming almost eager. âShe survived the crash and managed to find us on Vandor.â
Windu stood silently, rubbing his jaw. âKidaâs involvement in your rescue is related to this shift in the Force, isnât it?â
âShe saved our lives,â Anakin started, practically desperate to speak. âShe just needs guidance.â
It registered that Skywalker was trying his best to protect me.
âYes, Master,â Obi-wan cut in, giving Anakin a look. âI had known she was Force sensitive, and that she had a powerful Force signature. But I could never have foreseenâŚâ His words trailed off, as if he was hesitating to say anything further.
âWhat has she done?â Windu asked, his voice harsh. I crinkled my nose at him, almost wanting to go over and hit him. I wasnât really in the room, of course, so I could have at least pretended.
But something whispered in my mind that the Force was enabling me to see this for a reason. And that if the Force was doing it, the jedi could possibly sense me. So I wasnât going to be Force-slapping any jedi masters at that moment.
âAwakened, her abilities have.â Yoda wasnât responding to Windu. Nor was he asking a question. He said it like he was merely musing the concept. Like he had been meditating, rather than listening to the report. He opened his wrinkled eyes slowly, gazing sadly to Obi-wan. âDangerous, she has become. Powerful.â
The entire Council turned to watch Obi-wan respond. Only Anakin looked away, his face a conflict of emotions.
âShe stood up to Dooku,â Kenobi said slowly. âShe displayed abilities even I donât have.â His face was almost wistful as he continued. âSheâd always been connected to the Force--weâve all felt that. But there was a moment in that room, when she chose to reveal herself, that the Force seemed to flow through her endlessly.â
âIâd never felt anything like it,â Anakin spoke quietly. âIt didnât feel like when a jedi uses the Force, or when a Sith does. It was entirely...different.â
âUntamed,â Obi-wan offered.
âDangerous,â Windu countered, crossing his arms. âFar too dangerous to have leading troops in this war.â
âMaster, she saved our lives. And it wasnât the first time sheâs put herself at risk for the Republic.â Anakinâs words were kind, but the other jedi didnât seem as hopeful as him.
âHer actions may be good now, Skywalker,â Shaak Ti reasoned gently, quieting the younger jedi. âBut someone so powerful with no teaching in the ways of the Force could be tempted easily.â
âObi-wan was giving her lessons,â Anakin responded, making my eyebrows raise. I wondered briefly if Skywalker had known before or if that information was just him being filled in after my reveal. âHe could continue to teach her.â
âSheâs too old,â Plo Koon finally spoke, his voice metallic through his mouth piece. To my surprise, the Council seemed to be bickering as I watched. Iâd always imagined their meetings to be quaint and tight lipped. And maybe they usually were.
I had a talent for rubbing people the wrong way, it seemed.
âMasters,â Obi-wan said loudly, bringing the discussions to a standstill. âSheâs already felt the draw to the Dark Side,â he confessed, his expression sad. âAnd caved to it.â
My chest got tight as the room remained silent, the Force rippling with their shared concern. The first to make a sound was Yoda, his head shaking as he hummed sadly.
âToo late, we so often are. Clouded, our vision is.â His words werenât exactly what I expected.Â
âSheâs had a hard life,â Anakin added in gently. âA slave. Tortured for years. Sheâs lost everything. Watched her only parent die. All sheâs known is war.â
âAs have you, young Skywalker,â a Cerean with a white beard said softly. âYet here you stand.â
Maybe it was because my unconscious body was near Skywalker, or maybe it was because he was so intensely strong with the Force that I felt his emotions shift. They twisted and swelled with frustration.
âIâve had training. I have the Jedi Order. Sheâs had nothing!â
âMade it difficult to see, this war has. Hidden from us, many children are.â I assumed Yoda was referring to the Force-sensitive kids the jedi would take from their homeworlds to come and live in the temple.Â
âEven you, Skywalker,â the Twiâlek said, her voice pleasantly accented. âWe would have not have found had Obi-wan and Qiu Gon not had to land there.â I wondered if that was due to the darkness of the times or that Tatooine was an outer rim planet. You didnât hear about a whole lot of kids coming in from the Outer Rim to be a jedi.
âThe past cannot be changed,â Windu spoke in his baritone voice. âWe must decide what to do now.â
The room was quiet for a moment until Anakin spoke on my behalf. âSheâs not a bad person. She hasnât fallen yet. She was desperate to save us. That one moment shouldnât be the only deciding factor in her fate.â
âAnakin is right,â Obi-wan joined his former padawan. âKida has proven herself again and again. One mistake should not doom her.â
âThese are dangerous waters we are wading into,â Fisto voiced. âShe is too old to become a jedi. But her apparent abilities are too strong to be left untamed. Especially in the Republic army.â
âTheyâve never been a problem before,â Anakin interrupted.Â
âAdmittedly,â Plo Koon agreed with a nod of his head. âHer inclination towards the Force may even have saved your life, Master Windu.â
Windu hummed lowly, touching his knuckle to his chin. âAdmiral Killian has only ever spoken highly of the girl,â he allowed. âAnd we cannot deny the good she has done for the Republic and its assets.â
âPerhaps,â the Tholothian leapt in. âBut then we must not deny the bad. She is a bounty hunter, after all.â
âNot all bounty hunters are inherently criminals,â Shaak Ti voiced. âNor should we resort to any possible criminal past to punish her, as we were more than happy to work with her under that pretense before.â The Torgruta sighed, tucking her hands into her pooling sleeves. âWe must remember that we have bounty hunters within our GAR even here in the training facilities. If we turn on one for her past as a bounty hunter, we could lose them as well.â
âIndeed, not to mention that the bounty hunters on Kamino knew Kida well,â Obi-wan added thoughtfully. âMany bounty hunters respect Kida for both her abilities and her connection to Jango Fett.â
âNot just bounty hunters,â Plo Koon said. âBut sheâs done jobs for many crime syndicates, as well.â
âAnd you think they or a bounty hunter would leap to her defense?â the Cerean asked skeptically.
âLikely not,â Fisto responded. âBut as per your previous reports, she has a close connection with the Hutt Clan. Is that bond close enough that it would jeopardize our ability to travel through Hutt space?â He was addressing Obi-wan now.
âI donât know,â the jedi admitted. âBut I know that what connection she did have, it was with Jabba himself. He would be the one to determine if our safe travel remained.â
âThis issue is no longer if she was a bounty hunter,â the Twiâlek interrupted. âWe are now discussing the threats of what loyalties she holds, should we act against her at all.â
Obi-wan hummed while he stroked his beard. âYes, Kida has quite a reputation, not just in the underworld, but even in the Republic now.â
âThe men look up to her,â Anakin added softly. âAnd I know there are quite a few senators who consider her a friend.â
âDifficult, this decision is,â Yoda allowed. âInside the web of our war, she is tied.â
âObi-wan,â Windu said curtly, commanding attention. âIs she or is she not to be considered a threat?â
My friend was quiet for a long moment before breathing slowly. âShe is genuinely a good person. She cares for others. Thatâs why she even agreed to join this war. She is skilled. Concise. Practiced.â His words tapered off as he looked around. âThe last time we discussed this girlâs fate, I gave my word that she wouldnât be a threat. That her biology did not make her dangerous.âÂ
I sat heavily on one of the benches, knowing he was about to say âbut.â
âBut,â there it was. âThe way it felt when she used the Force was unlike anything. At first, it was just unruly, but unbelievably powerful. And then Dooku began talking. He got inside her head and the entire room shifted. It was like the Dark Side blossomed from inside her. It overpowered everything in the room. She could have defeated Dooku on her own, had she not stopped herself.â
âShe stopped herself?â Shaak Ti asked for clarification.
âYes. She stopped and the darkness faded when she saw me. It seems,â Obi-wan sighed sadly. âThat our opinion has quite an effect on her.â
âThat was what Dooku used against her,â Anakin jumped in, his voice dark. âHe used her fear of what the Council would think. Of what youâd do to her because she used her abilities.â
âDangerous, fear is. A path to the Dark Side, fear is.â Yoda hummed in thought as the conversations about my fate resumed.
âWe cannot have her in our military. If she turned, she could bring us all down,â the Cerean voiced.
âDecommission her then,â Fisto offered. âShe can return to her life of bounty hunting none the wiser.â
âShe knew what happened in that room, Master,â Obi-wan argued gently. âItâs...changed her. Iâve never felt her afraid like that before.â
âWe cannot leave her to wander with these new abilities,â an Iktotchi male said from the holograms. âIt would leave her open to fall to the Dark Sideâs temptations. Especially with Dooku now knowing her power.âÂ
âPrison?â the Twiâlek asked, glancing around the room. âShe would be contained. Easily monitored. Her adoptive brother is there, as well. It may even be good for the both of them.â
Anakin shook his head, chuckling darkly. âShe can be trusted. She doesnât need to be put in a prison.â
âNor do I know if that would stop our worries,â Windu allowed. âShould her powers swell like they did against Dooku, she could massacre the prison. Or stage a break out.â
âYou all sound like you want to kill her!â Anakin yelled, looking around at the placid faces. His own expression fell. âIs that what youâre planning to do?â
âIt is something we must consider,â Shaak Ti said gently. âAs a last resort, should she complete her fall. Destroying the Sith is the duty of the jedi.â
The Council was quiet as they faced that possibility. It comforted me that they at least didnât seem like they wanted to straight up murder me. Of course, that didnât take away from the sting of the fact that they were considering murdering me anyways.
âObi-wan,â Yodaâs voice cut through the tension, drawing my gaze back to his small stature. âHolding something back, you are.â
Anakin and Obi-wan both fidgeted uncomfortably, the younger of the two looking away entirely. His face was warped with distress. Sadness. Anger.
âYes, Master Yoda,â Obi-wan allowed finally, heaving a slow breath. âWhen the darkness within her rose to its peak, Kida spoke words Iâm sure she was never told before, since she knows little of the jedi and the sith.â
He was hesitating to speak. Even I wondered for a brief moment what he meant until I recalled the horrible voice in my head. And the words it had fed into my mind.
âWhat did she say?â Windu asked cautiously.
Obi-wan glanced around the room, his blue eyes wide with distress. âIt wasnât the whole thing, but Iâm sure itâs what it was.â That didnât answer any questions. The room seemed to feel the same as me, leaning a bit closer to entice the words from Kenobiâs mouth. He let out another slow breath. âThe Dark Side took over, even if it was only for a few moments, when she recited the final lines of the Code of the Sith.â
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I bolted upright, my body complaining from the sharp movement. My right shoulder in particular twinged, reminding me of the lightsaber wound Iâd received there. A part of me wanted to roll my eyes. Yet another scar to add to the long list.
And then I was jolted back to reality when I felt Anakinâs frustrated presence aboard the same ship as me. Near his signature was Obi-wanâs, which admittedly, didnât seem to be much more content than his counterpart.
I hadnât been able to hear what decision theyâd made. Maybe they hadnât even made one yet. The hairs on my arms stood up as I thought about the last thing Obi-wan had said. Iâd recited the Sith Code. The voice in my head...it was sith. Despite that, I was still confused. The voice in my head had saved me. Had saved my friends.Â
And now the jedi were possibly plotting my murder.
My fear made me hyper aware of the room. A monitor beeped beside me, electrodes slipping under the red fatigues I was dressed in. My armor and weapons, battered as they were, lay piled in the corner. The wide viewport beside my bed showed that we were nestled in a small fleet of Republic ships, the stars looking dim against the bright lights of the cruisers.
I swallowed thickly before swinging my legs over the side of the hospital bed, my body complaining. I turned off the monitor quickly. My energy was sapped, but I was being driven by fear for my own safety.
Despite not wanting to listen to Dooku, I couldnât help but hear his words in my mind as I gathered my things in my arms.
âYouâre afraid. Afraid of what the Council will do with you.â
I swallowed again, pulling the pillowcase loose and throwing my things inside, leaving out my wrist gauntlet. Tugging on my boots, I slung the crisp white pillowcase Iâd fashioned into a bag over my shoulder. Iâd blend in more in the red fatigues, despite my obvious uniqueness from the clones.Â
My wrist gauntlet still worked, thank Kaâra. I tapped it to life, Apex lighting up since I was back in a signal range, aboard a frigate.
âIâm glad to see youâre alright, miss,â Apex said immediately.
But I had no time for pleasantries. âExit strategy. Now. And keep it quiet.â
âOf course.â Thankfully, despite the AIâs inclination towards sassy disobedience, his systems were smart enough to know when not to talk back and just do what heâs told. The screen on my wrist gauntlet flickered with his calculations as I exited my room silently.
The halls were filled with wandering clones, some in their red fatigues, but most in their armor.
âAfraid of what your friends will think,â I heard Dookuâs voice say again. His words urged me forward, my eyes on the floor as I passed through the halls.
With no official exit strategy, I didnât realize where my feet were taking me until I found myself entering the corridor filled with officersâ quarters. The tickle in the back of my mind told me that Rex was inside his room, trying to sleep. He was restless, though, tossing his body sideways in an attempt to get comfortable.
His rest had likely been an order from Skywalker, considering the clone captain had been electrocuted multiple times that day.
Was it the same day?
I realized I didnât actually know if it was.
I swallowed thickly, hearing my wrist gauntlet beep. It drew my eye, the screen showing the way through a diagram of the frigate. It led to the escape pods.
âIâm not taking a pod,â I hissed. I almost wished Windu was aboard, but I knew from my vision that he was back in the temple on Coruscant. I wouldâve enjoyed stealing his starfighter again.
And considering he seemed to be gently advocating for my death, I wouldnât have returned it this time.
âIâve dispatched Pinky with your shuttle. She should be there by the time you escape. After youâve concluded whatever you plan on doing once you get your ass moving.â Ah. The cheek was back.
âShut up,â I grumbled, turning down his volume.Â
As he quieted towards a total mute, I heard him say, âA thank you would be nice.â I didnât give him one, sensing Rex stirring again inside his room. I wondered if heâd heard me outside. It didnât matter. I steeled myself and stepped forward, rapping my knuckles against the cold metal door.
His head shot up immediately, trained to be tense. To be suspicious. To be a target in war. His movements were slow behind the door. Practiced and silent. There was a pistol in his hand as he pressed the button that opened the door.
âIt amazes me that you can be paranoid even on your own ship,â I said as the door hissed open.Â
Rex didnât respond, merely staring at me in shock. A million questions swam in his gaze, but he couldnât seem to get any of them out. I rolled my eyes--a faked ease that I was using to cover the terrified trembling in my knees--and pushed past him into his room.
The quarters were small, with a single bed with starched clean sheets, a table for his armor, which was piled neatly upon it, and a night stand where his other pistol laid. A door at the back corner led to what I assumed was the fresher.Â
âKida,â he said finally, his voice gruff. âYouâre up.â
âHow long was I out?â
My curt response seemed to take him off guard. âNot...not as long as we thought you would be. Not even a full day. You were barely responsive at all when we first got you aboard.â
I nodded slowly. âYou carried me. Thank you.â
âYou saved my life first.â His voice was gentle, but I knew he was itching to understand.Â
I sat on the edge of his bed--an action which only heightened his nerves--and regarded the man slowly. He was in his blacks, but he didnât seem comfortable at all. He fidgeted in front of me, standing as straight as he would when addressing a superior. His trigger finger tapped endlessly at the side of his pistol.
âYou have questions.â His golden gaze, which had been fixated on the wall, cut to me sharply. He didnât have to speak, since I could practically hear his growled âduh.â I sighed slowly. âYou already knew I could use the Force.â
âYou said you couldnât use it like the jedi.â He was suddenly defensive. Suspicious. For some reason, his reaction hurt me more than the jedi likely planning my death.
âI wasnât lying, Rex.â
âThen what would you call what you did on Vandor?â
âIâd call it saving your life,â I bit, my own frustration flaring. Still, I felt that darkness lurking at the edge of my mind. I silenced my rising anger, afraid of what would be waiting for me down that path. âI didnât⌠Iâve never done anything like that before. I didnât even know I could.â
Maybe it was the brokenness of my voice or the surprising water that was rising in my eyes that made Rexâs anger melt away. Slowly, he moved to sit beside me, the bed shifting under me as his weight joined mine.
âThat was...incredible,â he offered, still in shock.
âIt was terrifying,â I countered, glancing sideways at him. âAnd itâs ruined everything.â
His golden eyes narrowed in thought at my words. âWhat do you mean? Weâre all alive because of you.â
âDonât tell me you didnât notice it, Rex. I can feel your fear. Youâre trying to hide it from me, but I can feel it.â
The captain grumbled lowly. âUsing the Force isnât fair.â
âIâm not a jedi,â I argued. âIâm a bounty hunter. We donât play fair. Now stop avoiding the subject.â
He was quiet for a moment before answering. âIâve always enjoyed watching you fight. Iâve described it to you before that itâs almost like youâre dancing. But in that chamber on Vandor...something changed.â
âBecause I used the Force?â
âNo.â Rex shook his head. âThere was a moment when your face just...turned. You werenât desperate to save us. You werenât even trying to save yourself. You were just...angry. Your goal had shifted from saving...to destroying.â
âI know,â I breathed. âIt scares me too.â
He breathed slowly. âHave you talked to General Skywalker? Maybe he could--â
âI have to leave, Rex.â It hurt me to cut him off. It hurt me to say those words. The look of shock on his face faded to sadness and betrayal.
âWha-- why?â
âThe Jedi Council didnât trust me before all of this. They certainly wonât trust me now. Even now, theyâre trying to figure out how to either control me, or kill me.â
âKida,â Rex sighed. âGeneral Kenobi would never allow--â
âKenobi is the one whoâs been reporting on me to the Council. Iâm sorry, Rex but itâs true.â I paused, glancing down at my hands. âOne of their options is to kill me.â
âThey wouldnât do that.â
âI saw it, Rex. I saw them talking.â
âHowâŚâ his words tapered off. âThe Force?â he asked, to which I nodded. âI wonât let them. No one is going to hurt you.â
âYou know you couldnât stop them if you tried, Rex,â I said gently. âI need to go. You know this. I need to figure out what this thing thatâs calling me is. Learn how to controlâŚâ I looked at my hands again. âThis.â
He swallowed slowly, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. âYou donât have to run away from this, Cyare.â
âIâm trying not to die.â
âWe can face this.â
âStop it, Rex.â He stopped, watching my face carefully at my stern voice. âThey will never let me be free. I have to figure this out on my own. Without the jediâs influence. Without the Republic.â
âWithout me,â he completed dejectedly. Iâd never heard him speak in such a way before.
âI didnât say that.â Rex looked up in shock, meeting my stormy gaze. I wondered if it was the fear that was giving me such courage in a subject I barely knew. âCome with me,â I whispered, leaning over to grab his wrist gently.
I let him sit in silence, thinking over my words. They were big. And it would be tough for him. His arm turned over slowly, his long fingers curling around my wrist in turn. A small, hopeful smile came to my face.
âNo.â
My smile melted, my hand drawing away. His fingers caught mine, though, keeping me from pulling away entirely.Â
âLook at me,â he said softly, tilting his head to try and meet my eyes again. âPlease, cyare, look at me.â I finally did, seeing pain, but also genuinity on his face. âI canât go. You know that. My duty is here.â
âIt could be with me,â I surprised myself with my words. They were practically breathed out from between my lips, carried with a surprising amount of sorrow.
His forehead wrinkled in pain. âIt canât be. You know that. I canât desert.â
I looked at my lap again, finally successfully pulling my hand from his grasp. âRight. It was stupid to ask.â I stood, stooping to scoop up my pillowcase bag again.
âCyare,â he sighed, moving to stand with me. âKida,â he tried again, failing to make me turn still. His hand grasped my upper arm firmly, turning me to face him by force. âThis isnât easy for me.â
âYou could have fooled me, Rex.â I tried to pull away, but Rexâs grip was impressively tight.
âKida you donât understand. I donât call you cyare lightly. I donât take my feelings for you lightly.â
They were words Iâd wanted to hear for a long time. Since weâd been marooned at Cutâs farmhouse. But in that moment, they were almost sour. Iâd have preferred he yelled. Preferred he was afraid, even.
I wished that he wanted me to go. That he never wanted to see me again.
This affection, but refusal to go...it hurt too much.
âI have to go, Rex,â I said softly, my voice more broken sounded than I wanted it to be.
âKida,â he whispered, drawing closer. His lips were by my ear, his breath tickling the wisps of hairs there. âNi kar'tayl gar darasuum.â
My eyes closed, tears leaking out when I hadnât given them permission to do so. Iâd never heard those words before. They were beautiful, even in the harsh dialect of Mandoâa. But while they were amazing and enveloped me in a warmth, they also stung like daggers. In a burst of emotion, I turned in his grasp, my free hand coming up to grab the front of his black shirt. I pulled his tall frame down, lifting my head to press my lips against his.
He seemed shocked for only a short beat before his other hand came up to rest on my cheek, the first still wrapped around my upper arm. His lips were softer than I would have imagined them to be, considering he was a soldier. Then again, they were fed all of the nutrients they needed to stay as physically inclined as possible. I guess that led to health all around.
The kiss was messy at first as the intelligent man quickly learned the new experience. It didnât take him long to take over, the hand on my arm releasing to curl around my waist. It was inexperienced. Messy. Frantic. Emotional.
And wonderful.
It practically hurt my lips to pull away. My fist, still clenched in the front of his shirt, released slowly to push his chest backwards. Our breathing was a bit shorter as we stood in silence, quiet tears still sliding down my face.
One of his rough thumbs lifted to wipe them from my cheek. I caught his hand, pushing it away as well.
I sniffed slowly. âMaybe you do,â I finally whispered in response to his words. âBut itâs not enough for you to come with me.â
The hurt that radiated off of him stung like a whip across my shoulders. I drew away from him, his door opening at the press of my hand. He followed like he was in a daze, stopping only when he reached the threshold of his room.
âKida,â he breathed. I could tell he was desperate for words, but there were none for him to speak.Â
âGoodbye, Rex,â I whispered. âRetâurcye mhi.â
The captain was silent, staring sadly at me as the door hissed closed between us. I angrily held back a sob that threatened to come up my throat before glancing at my wrist gauntlet.Â
I followed the path Apex had planned for me diligently, my eyes glued to the floor, fingers curled tight around the pillowcase. The escape pods were unguarded, as would make sense since my departure from the medical wing had yet to be noticed.
I opened one, setting my bag inside.
âKida.â I turned at the familiar voice, a part of me wishing it belonged to Rex. I knew it didnât, though.
âPlease donât try to stop me, Anakin,â I responded gently, seeing the jedi standing outside the escape pod.
âWhere are you going?â
I didnât answer his question. âDid the Council decide what they wanted to do with me?â
Anakinâs eyes widened for only a moment before he pieced it together. âTheyâre...still undetermined.â
âIâm not sticking around to wait for them to decide how to kill me.â
âThey wonât-â he started, but his words faltered. Even he doubted if they would keep me alive. He breathed through his nose. âItâs wrong of them not to trust you. You saved our lives.â
âMaybe,â I allowed. âBut theyâre right in that thereâs a darkness speaking to me. I need to figure out what it is. I need to learn to control this.â
âThe jedi can--â
âNot from the jedi, Anakin. You know I wouldnât do well with your...rules.â
âWell, neither do I,â he argued. âBut with us, you can still do good. Like you wanted to.â Over his shoulder, a clone in 501st armor appeared, his blond hair buzzed short. Rex. He seemed like heâd been running to catch up, but stopped suddenly when he saw Anakin.
It seemed duty would win out again.
âI canât stay, Anakin,â I said softly, looking away from Rexâs desperate gaze to meet the jediâs again.
His blue eyes were conflicted, but I could tell the conflict didnât lie with me. âI know,â he said finally. âPleaseâŚbe careful.â
I smiled sadly in the doorway, my hand lifting to press the door key that would seal me in and launch me from the port. âYou too.â With that, the doors hissed closed and the thrusters engaged, sending me away from the frigate and the GAR, towards where I knew Pinky would be waiting to pick me up.
In the tiny viewport, I saw Rexâs face, his face drawn harshly with sorrow, shrinking as I put more distance between us.

Steven Universe Podcast: Volume 2, Episode 3: Peridot
In the new season of the Steven Universe Podcast launched January 25, 2018, episode 3, released February 8, 2018, is about Peridot! The official description:
Why does Peridot call everyone a "clod?" Find out on this episode of the Steven Universe Podcast as creator Rebecca Sugar and former Executive Producer Ian Jones-Quartey return to discuss Peridot! Discover what inspired her design and personality traits, and how Rebecca's real life experiences shaped Peridot's development and storyline. Plus, Shelby Rabara, the voice of Peridot, and storyboard artist Amber Cragg join to share their favorite Peridot moments and episodes, and speculate on how Peridot is spending her free time away from the Gems! And Peridot herself answers some fan questions about best pets, earth fashion, and the Crystal Temps!

This is very long because the podcasts are getting long, and I donât want to skimp on the detail but I also donât want to overwhelm anyone with too much text. Therefore, I will open with bulleted highlights and include a more detailed narrative under the read-more.
Highlights:
Shelby Rabara thinks Peridot letting Steven and Amethyst help her in the episode âBack to the Kindergartenâ was a real turning point for her as an expression of trust.
Amber Cragg thinks Peridot is a fantastic âicebreakerâ character who is functioning these days as a Crystal Gems mascot.
Peridotâs free time on the weekends, according to Amber, would probably be occupied playing video games like Farmville and trying to make vlogs but failing to edit properly. Shelby thinks she does random art installations.
Peridotâs âclodâ catch phrases originated with Ian Jones-Quartey doing an alien impression in the writersâ room, combined with an interpretation of science bros being condescending about concepts like evolution when they could have easily been more gentle and welcoming.Â
âMarble Madnessâ combined story elements of discovering the Gemsâ pasts with the Gems themselves learning something new about the present.
Rebecca feels that Peridotâs evolution from being a Homeworld flunky to discovering what happens when the system does NOT work for someone is a very important aspect of her character.
Peridot truly believed Homeworldâs philosophy was good for everyone and was not shy about being cruel to those who defied it; Rebecca related this to her experience being a Jewish kid getting shamed for her assumed beliefs by people who honestly thought they were doing her a favor.
Do Gems emerge from the ground with their indoctrination to Homeworld already embedded, or is it taught to them through propaganda? Some of both.
Shelby Rabara, in character as Peridot, suggests the Crystal Tempsâ next adventure should involve baking an ube roll with Lars; that sheâd like to learn eating so she can make noises; that sheâd like to make vinyl pants that can have music embedded in them;Â and that dogs are the Best Earth Animal.
The detailed summary, including Shelby and Amber discussing Peridot's evolution, Rebecca and Ian discussing Peridotâs origin, and fan questions answered in character . . .
Read it all below!
McKenzie opens by asking storyboard artist Amber Cragg and Peridot's voice actor Shelby Rabara to discuss the episodes "Raising the Barn" and "Back to the Kindergarten." Shelby feels very in suspense when she watches new episodes because it's been so long between when she recorded and when she gets to see it. She loves when Peridot is so depressed lying in the bathroom, with that awful face Paul Villeco drew on her, and how she wants to bring her music to the kindergarten.
Shelby points out that Peridot lets her friends Amethyst and Steven cheer her up, and says it's an act of trust, which is a bit of a turning point for her. Even though Peridot ends up having an outburst and unloading, it's important to know that hope can sometimes come in the form of other people inspiring it in you.
Amber thinks an important aspect is Peridot's energy; she has a ton of it, and she can end up investing it in the wrong place. She was so careful with Lapis that she never wanted to say anything to rock the boat, and Lapis didn't talk back much, so neither really communicated, and it became a disaster of misunderstanding. But sometimes even if you invest energy into what ends up being a wasted effort, it's okay. You have to know when to move on. Amber mentions loving the scene that Katie drew looking at the sunflowers and riding in the train.
McKenzie clarifies that sometimes the issue is it being the wrong person you invest your time and effort into, and sometimes it's the wrong time. You can't fixate too much on ONE thing that has to be perfect or it's all over, or you could end up with nothing. She brings up Peridot's changing love for the Earth and its inhabitants, and asks what they think about that. Shelby thinks Peridot's love has developed partly because of how others there have treated her. Peridot's no longer just a "space Dorito"; she has empathy now. Amber says the Crystal Gems helped her find her roots, and now whether she likes it or not, Earth is home.
McKenzie leads into discussing Peridot's relationships and sense of self. Does Peridot put Amethyst down as defective as a way of increasing her own sense of self-worth? Amber says Peridot first noticed how all the Gems on Earth ignore the rules she's lived her life by forever, and how she's incensed by this at first, only to find she can develop her own personality through ignoring what she was told to be as well. Shelby runs through some interpretations of Peridot's perceptions of the other Gems, seeing Pearl as beneath her, Amethyst as cool despite her flaws, and Garnet as requiring compartmentalization. Shelby brings up Peridot's willingness to let the others show her who they are, and highlights the scene with Peridot being willing to try dancing with Garnet. (Her interpretation is that Peridot's response is to feel dirty and resolve never to try again.)Â
Still, the Crystal Gems being full of surprises parallels her experience with Earth itself. Peridot herself got to be a complete ham, take herself in whatever direction she wanted and be encouraged by the others. No one will ever stifle her attempts to grow. We can take the message home that we can change even if we're past childhood or adolescence; we can reinvent ourselves and still access support.

McKenzie asks what the other Gems may have learned from Peridot, and Amber says they may have been inspired to see someone new coming into the fold as someone who needed their guidance and help. Amber thinks Peridot almost functions as a mascot--as a source of energy and morale. Everyone loves her, and she's a great "icebreaker" character, inspiring the others to be less blocked in and cautious.
And for her last question to them, McKenzie brings up how Lamar and Rebecca suggested Garnet and Greg play tennis on the weekends; in that light, what do Amber and Shelby think Peridot does? Amber thinks she argues with people on the Internet and is a pro gamer on Farmville (handle: ClodFarmer3000). She probably also tries to make vlogs but can't edit. Maybe she's taking a class in Adobe After Effects. Shelby thinks she does random art installations. Maybe blending in with a tree, not blinking. Or trying to be a mannequin in a clothing store. Or eating french fries and messing with people using her metal powers. She wouldn't let anyone in during her art creation process.
Ian and Rebecca talk origins and concepts:
Peridot was conceived pretty early on. Ian used to bust out with an alien impression in the writers' room, with generic not-understanding-humans statements, and he really wanted to put a similar alien in the show.Â

The origin of Peridot's favorite word "clod" began with Rebecca and Ian watching the Cosmos remake, which sort of makes you fall in love with science--but then there's another side of it, with people who get mad at religion and are angry with those who don't understand evolution. Ian would do a voice of a "frustrated liberal": "But the Earth was created in seven days!" "No it wasn't, you CLOD." "Evolution is real, CLOD!" They point out that evolution is such a beautiful concept, but some of its proponents want to win you to their side by being mean about it. They believe more in being gentle.
They connected this with Peridot eventually, first starting with Elle Michalka wanting to include a Gem named Peridot combined with Rebecca's inkling that she wanted to handle Steven getting cyberbullied on the show. That didn't exactly come to fruition, but the idea of the person doing it--harassing someone and threatening someone from far away--became Peridot. This worked well with their desire to include discovery of the Gems' pasts and mix that with them learning something new about the present. Rebecca loved the episode "Marble Madness" because they'd written everything referenced in that episode to all be tied in together, dependent on information that had been revealed carefully in previous episodes.

Rebecca enjoyed bringing Peridot in as an example of a Gem who really toes the line and buys Homeworld propaganda; she relates it to her experience growing up Jewish and having other kids tell her they know she's categorically wrong about all of reality based on what box they believed she belonged in. The kids were never shy about telling her what punishment awaited people who don't pick the right religion, and honestly believed they're helping her out by saying these things; Peridot is similar, having never met a Gem for whom the order of the Diamonds was not beneficial, and she is not worried about whether the Crystal Gems' feelings will be hurt if she says so.Â
Rebecca says Peridot may seem conceited, but she isn't; she knows she's a grunt, a maintenance worker, and is only proud because she knows her place. She believes the others she's meeting are just as not-special as she is, but then she comes to find out there are Gems who were failed by the system, and that changes her outlook. Always before, she thought the Homeworld philosophy really was the best for everyone, but when she finds out it isn't, she also realizes she herself is outside the system. You have to change your thinking when you learn the way things are is bad for some people.
McKenzie then asks about Gem indoctrination; do they pop out of the ground with these beliefs intact, or is it drilled into them? Ian acknowledges this is a big question about the nature of Gems, and they agree it's some of both. Peridot, as a maintenance worker, didn't think about questioning the system because she was just too busy working within it, going to a bunch of different places and learning about them, and also unknowingly absorbing revised history created to edit out what made Homeworld look unsuccessful or imperfect.
Peridot answers questions:
Peridot perks up at the mention of questions sent through Twitter and demonstrates recognition of the medium, and claims she has only taken over the CN Twitter when she's had PERMISSION.
McKenzie: I've heard rumors that you forcibly took over Cartoon Network's social media channels?
Peridot: I wouldn't call it forcibly. I basically did it because I felt like it, but who needs permission these days? I'm Peridot, hello.
McKenzie: That's fair. You are the #1 cartoon character according to that post.
Peridot: Did you see Shelby Rabara congratulated me? I got to talk to SHELBY RABARA. Oh my god. I don't think she knew that I self-proclaimed that I was the #1 cartoon character.
McKenzie: Would you ever consider leading another adventure as the Crystal Temps?
Peridot: I love being the Crystal Temps. I mean, everybody knows that I am The Garnet, the best one. I'm not as good as THE Garnet, but I think Lapis and Connie and myself, I think we would be really really great at baking cakes, specifically ube cakes with Lars.
McKenzie: Interesting! So would Pumpkin accompany you on that one, or would Lars take the place of Pearl?
Peridot: Oh no, Pumpkin definitely would be by my side, who's gonna lick up the extra ube cake when it--I don't wash floors, that's what Pearls do.
McKenzie: Speaking of food, if you could eat anything, what would you want to try first? Cookie Cats, Fry Bits, or something else?
Peridot: I would definitely try fry bits, because there's something about the oil bubbling really violently that makes it really really neat to watch. And apparently when I watch Steven eat the fry bits, he makes this loud noise, so I'm interested in how many loud noises I can make all at the same time.
McKenzie: What is objectively the best Earth pet? There's dogs, cats, hamsters, are you familiar with those?
Peridot: What is the difference between a hamster and--cats?
McKenzie: Cats are larger and they would probably eat a hamster.
Peridot: Oh my god, they eat a hamster? Cats eat hamsters?
McKenzie: They eat mice, which are related to hamsters I'm pretty sure.
Peridot: I ate a Cookie Cat. Was I eating a real cat?
McKenzie: That is a separate thing.
Peridot: Are dogs loyal?
McKenzie: They are. That is their main feature.
Peridot: Okay. Well, Pumpkin is super loyal to me, so if Pumpkin's anything like an Earth dog, I would have to say my final answer would be the best Earth pet is a dog, if it's remotely anywhere near Pumpkin.

McKenzie: What is a piece of Earth fashion that you've always wanted to try on?
Peridot: Is there something called vinyl on Earth? I would like to try on some vinyl pants. Very shiny. I don't know if they're easy to walk in, but something about the vinyl, the scratchy sound it makes. Don't Earth people put music on vinyl? Or am I getting that mixed up with the round thing?
McKenzie: Yeah, they're both called vinyl. They're not on the pants. There's no music in the pants.
Peridot: There should be music in the pants.
McKenzie: Maybe that should be the next step.
Peridot: Is that something that I can contribute to Earth? Making vinyl music pants that can play music while you walk?
McKenzie: I think that that's definitely something you should look into.
Peridot: Peridot, Peridot, Peridot, Peridot is going to own vinyl music pants!
McKenzie: I look forward to getting a pair.
Peridot: Me too. Me too. Me too McKenzie.
McKenzie: What is your favorite part about being a farmer?
Peridot: It is just so amazing to have my hands in the dirt. I love the smell of dirt, I love those white little rock thingies that supposedly help with water drainage. I really enjoy that something like soil has striations in it, just like rock. You have to put the bottom layer with rocks and you have to put some mulch on top, and then on top of that more dirt, and more rocks on top. So there is definitely a way to create soil that has good drainage, has all the yummy stuff for all these flowers and fruits and vegetables to grow in. So I really do believe being a farmer is something that is just ingrained in me.
McKenzie: You take it seriously.
Peridot: I take it very seriously. I am mulching every other day McKenzie. I am getting bags of mulch. Pumpkin likes to eat the mulch, and that's a problem.
McKenzie: If you had a podcast, what would you make yours about?
Peridot: This is a great question. I'm gonna need a moment. Now, what we're doing right now, a podcast, where people listen to us in our podcast, would I be able to have guests come on my podcast?
McKenzie: You can have guests on the podcast.
Peridot: I watched an episode of Mr. Rogers one time. Steven was watching it, so I got to watch it as well. And other than Camp Pining Hearts, that's still my number one show. Mr. Rogers has all these people come on the show and talk about how they make things, like mozzarella cheese. One time this man came on the show and showed how they made mozzarella cheese, and stretched it with their hands and put it in the water after molding it into little balls. I would really like to have maybe the inventor of yellow Post-It sticky pads. I would just wanna know people's thought processes? Like, what makes that glue on the top of the Post-It note? How does a microphone work? Who invented the button? I don't have any buttons on my clothes, obviously, but Steven one time wore a polo shirt with a button. And I was fixated with this little tiny round thing with four holes. I would like to know who made that button. Who are the great minds behind Earthling things?
McKenzie: Buttons have probably been around for a while. I don't know that the person who made buttons is still with us, if you know what I'm getting at.
Peridot: Oh that's a shame.
McKenzie: But I think that the mozzarella cheese thing sounds great!
Peridot: Where do people go?
McKenzie: Um....
Peridot: Is that for the next podcast?
McKenzie: Yeah we'll talk about that next time.
Peridot: Okay.
An episode about Pearl is next week!

A must read:
The Lost Jewel â Rediscovering Hazrat Imam Aliâs (A.S.) Letter
This is a fascinating story.
Pakistanâs premier female poet Fahmida Riaz, read a letter by Imam Ali (A.S.) while browsing through a translation of Nahaj ul Balagha. Today via email, she narrated how she was âso touched, and felt so angry for not knowing about it all my life, because really no one talks about the real jewels of Muslim history, they would rather conceal it from one generation after anotherâ. She took notes from the ancient text and recently quoted it in her paper presented at an Urdu Conference held at Heidelberg, Germany.
On her current sojourn in the USA, she showed this text to Dr. Patricia Sharpe who was impressed enough to put it on her website under the title GOOD GOVERNANCE EARLY MUSLIM STYLE.
In her email Fahmida writes further that âAnother American friend in Santa Fe is writing a book for the National Geographic about the achievements of Muslim thinkers and men of the sciences and letters. I showed him the text and he has asked me to forward it to him so that he may include it in his book. âThe Americans should know about it ,â he wrote. I have sent him the text, sighing to myself, â..and so should the Muslimsâ.
But really, what are we ever told about Islam or Muslims other than chopping of arms and killing of infidels? Or we are informed that Muslims once had a great empire, a brutal picture of conquest and subjugation of the so-called âinfidelsâ. What do we know of Hazrat Imam Ali (A.S.) except that he was very brave with a legendary sword? Pretty little.
And writes Riaz: âhere is this document, written by him,1500 or so years ago. The sheer beauty of his thought, the largesse of his great heart, the incredible refinement of his mind! It takes your breath away and brings tears to your eyes. And then, his understanding of the class structure of society.. long before anyone in the world paid attention to the composition of society! All this is so incredible.
The other ancient classics about governance that come to mindâŚ. tell you how to invite your enemy to dinner and then stab him in the back. They tell you how to perpetuate your RULE. In comparison, Imam Ali (A.S.) is telling you how to create a State that provides the greatest opportunity for the people to be happy. So great was this man that even being remotely associated with him is an honour that we hardly deserve though we are all born in the fold of his faith.
Another thought that comes to haunt you: Hazrat Imam Ali (A.S.) was so close to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) that he could never say what he did not believe to be the Holy Prophet's (S.A.W) own will? O my God! Then in what unworthy hands his teachings fell! How unfortunate it is for us.â
I wanted to share this excitment and sadness of Fahmida on this space.
Here is the entry in Patriciaâs blog where she has reproduced sections of letter and also improved the translations available online:
George W. Bush seems to think that the US political system must be replicated in structure and spirit in order for people to enjoy a decent political system. In fact, the Muslim world also has traditions and texts which establish the principles of good governance. Below are quotes from one such document, a document that might profitably be added to all basic political science syllabi. A close reading might also provide insights and terminology for American public diplomats tasked to engage Muslims in a dialogue about the universal human interest in fair, honest and competent government.
Ali bin Abi Talib (A.S.) Wali-Allah, the First Imam and son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Mohammed Mustafa (S.A.W), wrote a long letter of guidance after appointing Maalik al-Ashtar to be Governor of Egypt. He advises the new governor that his administration will succeed only if he governs with concern for justice, equity, probity and the prosperity of all.
The passages excerpted below illustrate the timeless applicability of Imam Aliâs (A.S.) admonitions. The letter itself is contained in the Nahjal Balaagha, which is a collection of the letters and speeches of the First Imam.
Manifest religious tolerance: Amongst your subjects there are two kinds of people: those who have the same religion as you [and] are brothers to you, and those who have religions other than yours, [who] are human beings like you. Men of either category suffer from the same weaknesses and disabilities that human beings are inclined to; they commit sins, indulge in vices either intentionally or foolishly and unintentionally without realizing the enormity of their deeds. Let your mercy and compassion come to their rescue and help in the same way and to the same extent that you expect Allah to show mercy and forgiveness to you.
Equity is best: A policy which is based on equity will be largely appreciated. Remember that the displeasure of common men, the have-nots and the depressed persons overbalances the approval of important persons, while
the displeasure of a few big people will be excusedâŚif the general public and the masses of your subjects are happy with you.
The rich always want more: They are the people who will be the worst drag upon you during your moments of peace and happiness, and the least useful to you during your hours of need and adversity. They hate justice the most. They will keep demanding more and more out of State resources and will seldom be satisfied with what they receive and will never be obliged for the favor shown to them if their demands are justifiably refused.
A healthy society is interdependent: The army and the common men who pay taxes are two important classes, but in a well faring state their well-being cannot be guaranteed without proper functioning and preservation of the other classes, the judges and magistrates, the secretaries of the State and the officers of various departments who collect various revenues, maintain law and order as well as preserve peace and amity among the diverse classes of the society. They also guard the rights and privileges of the citizens and look to the performance of various duties by individuals and classes. And the prosperity of this whole set-up depends upon the traders and industrialists. They act as a medium between the consumers and suppliers. They collect the requirements of society. They exert to provide goodsâŚ.Then comes the class of the poor and the disabled persons. It is absolutely necessary that they should be looked after, helped and providedâŚ.at least the minimum necessities for well-being and contented livingâŚ.
Ensure an honest judiciary: You must select people of excellent character and high caliber with meritorious recordsâŚ.When they realize that they have committed a mistake in judgement, they should not insist on it by trying to justify itâŚ.they should not be corrupt, covetous or greedy. They should not be satisfied with ordinary enquiry or scrutiny of a case butâŚmust attach the greatest importance to reasoning, arguments and proofs. They should not get tired of lengthy discussions and arguments.Theymust exhibit patience and perseveranceâŚand when truth is revealed to them they must pass their judgementsâŚ.These appointments must be madeâŚwithout any kind of favoritism being shown or influence being accepted; otherwise tyranny, corruption and misrule will reignâŚ.Let the judiciary be above every kind of executive pressure or influence, above fear or favour, intrigue or corruption.
Poverty leads to ruination: If a country is prosperous and if its people are well-to-do, then it will happily and willingly bear any burden. The poverty of the people is the actual cause of the devastation and ruination of a country and the main cause of the poverty of the people is the desire of its ruler and officers to amass wealth and possessions whether by fair or foul means.
Corruption undermines national well-being: I want to advise you about your businessmen and industrialists. Treat them wellâŚ.They are the sources of wealth to the countryâŚ.One more thingâŚ.you must keep an eye over their activities as well. You know that they are usually stingy misers, intensely self-centered and selfish, suffering from the obsession of grasping and accumulating wealth. They often hoard their goods to get more profit out of them by creating scarcity and by indulging in black-marketing.
Stay in touch with the people: You must take care not to cut yourself off from the public. Do not place a curtain of false prestige between you and those over whom you rule. Such pretension and shows of pomp and pride are in reality manifestations of inferiority complex and vanity. The result of such an attitude is that you remain ignorant of the conditions of your subjects and of the actual cases of the events occurring in the State.
Peace brings prosperity: If your enemy invites you to a peace treatyâŚ.,never refuse to accept such an offer, because peace will bring rest and comfort to your armies, will relieve you of anxieties and worries, and will bring prosperity and affluence to your people. But even after such treaties be very careful of the enemies and do not place too much confidence in their promises, because they often resort to peace treaties to deceive and delude you and take advantage of your negligence, carelessness and trust. At the same time, be very careful never to break your promise with your enemy; never forsake the protection or support that you have offered to him, never go back upon your word and never violate the terms of the treaty.
History reveals all: Do not reserve for yourself anything which is a common property of all and in which others have equal rights. Do not close your eyes from glaring malpractice of officers, miscarriage of justice and misuse of rights, because you will be held responsible for the wrong thus done to others. In the near future your wrong practices and maladministration will be exposed and you will be held responsible and punished for the wrong done to the helpless and oppressed people.

Solopreneurs: Whatâs your fastest Shower, Ship, Succeed story?
Maybe this term already exists. I have no idea. But hereâs what I want to talk about: I had an idea for a new class while in the shower yesterday. I announced I was doing it today. It starts in two weeks. In six weeks, Iâll have a pretty clear picture of how successful it was. That seems like a turnaround that solopreneurs are uniquely positioned to create.
Backstory: My COVID vs. Career Crisis
Disclaimer: My family and I have been extremely lucky during COVID. No one has been sick and no one in my immediate family works in healthcare or has a job that requires going in-person work. So, Iâm using the term âcrisisâ with a tremendous amount of privilege. Still, it decimated my industry and how I used to earn a living.
That all being said, when COVID hit, I lost four months of work in one week. It created a huge void in my life. My entire career was built on live: live training and facilitation using IMPROV. I curled up into a ball and started questioning everything I had done in my life. What did it mean? What was at the center of it. About 6 months and 100,000 words (written only to myself) later, and I had the conceptual model for the PLAY Polarities. It was exhilarating. I had an idea of value that I could share with the world. Something of mine that I could sell myself. Only one problem. I didnât devise the product. Okay, cool. Hereâs a model. Everybody has a model. No one pays for an idea. They pay for an application of an idea.
So, simultaneously as I began telling people at PLAYdates (then TDCocoa) about the idea, I began thinking about ways to productize the insights I had assembled. Whatâs the coaching package? Whatâs the training program? Etc.Â
I think about monetization a lot. Between my cozy white male Gen X upbringing and my life in improv, I didnât get a lot of good ideas about how to make money happen. As a kid I was told by parents and guidance counselors:Â âjust get a general liberal arts degree and you can do anything.â I even once suggested to my stepdad that I might get a degree in public speaking (which turns out would have been hugely valuable as I spent a lot of time as a presentation skills coach). His reaction?
âWhy would you get a degree in how to say something instead of getting a degree in what to say.â
Somehow he thought that was a bad idea but didnât bat an eye as I selected my major in philosophy. PHILOSOPHY.
From there I went into improv where the general approach to everything is, âletâs just help each other out and everything will be fine.â Thatâs why the only financially successful improvisers are the ones you recognize on TV or the ones with good day jobs. âItâs a mugâs game.â
Donât get me wrong: improvisation can help you immeasurably as an entrepreneur. I just didnât know it and never applied it that way. So, consider it a âmod.â Improv doesnât necessarily help âout of the box.â
So, I did what I always do and why Iâve devoted myself to facilitating transformational self-improvement -- I started reading books about it. How does one become an âentrepreneur?â How does one âmonetizeâ their intellectual property into a service? How does one âproductizeâ their services into clearly defined products?
That brings me to a nice hot shower.
SHOWER: Surprising Yourself with the Big Idea
Iâve been racking my brain about lightweight products to monetize the PLAY Polarities. I turns out that itâs not enough to say, âI do coaching, training, and consulting.â People donât just start throwing money at you. You have to clearly identify problems and try solving them.
So you discovered a model that seems to organize individual, team, and organizational improvement priorities. Big deal! Who needs that? Do they know they need that? What are they going to do with that knowledge? How can it make or save them money? I.e. WHY SHOULD THEY PAY YOU?
Iâve been beating my head against the wall about this for weeks. And, without exception, each monetization strategy I come up with occurs to me in the shower. It just pops into my head.
âEureka! I should do this!â
Disclaimer: My spouse and I are watching the TV show, Eureka, right now. That may be a factor.
So the idea for this new class hit me. I would lead a live, virtual class, reduce the rate in exchange for participants letting me record it and turn it into assets for an asynchronous eLearning.Â
Okay, but if Iâm going to do that, before everyone gets too busy returning to the âreal world,â I should do it QUICKLY.
âLike April?â says my Shower Daemon.
âYes! April!â I reply. And then immediately face anxiety. How do I do that?
SHIP: Lessons from Volunteer Carpentry and Seth Godin
Something else I had to learn on my journey to unexpected entrepreneurship? Execution. Yes, my new company is as an assassin.... ON THE DANCE FLOOR! (Jumps up and down, shakes hips, trips, falls, farts.)
I had to learn what Charan and Bossidy talk about in their book, unsurprisingly called Execution. So you have great ideas? Great. What will you do about them? You plan to sell? How will you sell? How many dials? How many LinkedIn messages? When?Â
Execution is the lifeblood of business. Itâs almost too simple to recognize itâs profundity. Yes, duh, to do something, you must, you know, do something. When I tell you that that simple truism has sabotaged most of my professional life, believe me.Â
As the Apostle Paul says, âThe good that I would do, I do not. The evil that I would not do, I do.â Â
Or, in the Revised Matt Elwell version, âThe work that I wish I would do, I procrastinate about. The desk that doesnât need to be reorganized for the 80th time, I reorganize again. This is, in fact, the perfect day for it.â
As I said in a PLAYdate this afternoon:
Most people get to the starting line and GO! I get to the starting line and keep trying to redraw the perfect starting line. Job one for me is cultivating the habit of running imperfectly.
So, against every instinct, I announced my class on todayâs PLAYdate using a slide I created while the participants were in their breakouts.Â
There are two places. The first was Habitat For Humanity. I was no carpenter, but my home church had a long history with HFH and I loved the few mission days I spent with them. I learned a lot about handling wood and framing out a house. I learned how to âtalk to the nail,â making small adjustments to how you struck the nail to encourage it not bend as you encountered resistance. As someone who was pretty much written off in gym class as an irredeemable fat nerd, this was something physical that I felt competent about.
However, because I felt competent, I started wanting everything I did to be perfect. To garner the compliments and validation that meant so much to me as I started. But no. that positive reinforcement started waning, and people instead started looking at me with their heads cocked to one side. I was taking too long.
Thatâs when I learned a saying Iâve tried to remind myself of my whole life:
âYou ainât building a piano!â
(This was said to me in deep southern New Jersey, so it was more like, âYuh-aint-buildinâ-uh-pian-urr!â And then someone threw a piece of scrapple at me. True story.)
That simple sentence reminds me that I have made a habit, perhaps a compulsion, of fretting over details most people wonât notice. Iâve often excused this by telling myself that Iâm an artist and therefore, Iâm not just filling orders.
If youâre prone to excusing your own poor time management in favor of artistry, consider this. Are you making a statement about your art with what you are doing, or making a statement about your fear with what youâre not yet doing? Are you really saying something with the detail youâre burning hours on to get âjust rightâ or are you allowing yourself to avoid something that really does present the greater artistic challenge.Â
As Stephen Covey observed, âavoid being âright in the thickâ of thin things.â
Thatâs my Habitat for Humanity story. My other influence, which is a much shorter story, is Seth Godin. You can still get his ShipIt Journal for free on his blog. And if you have something worth doing, I would suggest using his guide to help you do it. In Godinâs characteristic manner, he helped me realize how much of my failure to execute was motivated by fear.Â
If youâre terrified of failing at something, your brain will make sure you donât, by making sure you never really try. Basically, you brain exists to keep you alive. Weâve evolved to not do things that can endanger our aliveness by experiencing and avoiding pain. So, if youâre afraid of failing, you are experiencing a kind of pain. Brains hate that noise. QED: you never quite get around to it.
So when Iâm not channeling the kindly old South Jersey carpenter who said, âyou ainât building a piano,â I channel Seth Godin who calmly informs me through his immaculate demeanor and trademark spectacles, âjust get it shipped.â
Telling people about my class today was me âthrowing my cap over the wallâ to make sure I did what I said. Iâm already scared thinking about it. But now itâs a fear of not getting it shipped, not of not getting it perfect. Thatâs the fear I want.
SUCCEED: Coming Soon?Â
In improv we have a ârule of threes.â Itâs integral to comedy:
Offer something
Add something else which, by its very following of 1, begins to create a possible connection/story
Add a third thing which, by association with the other two things, clarifies the connection and resolves it or launches us on a trajectory
Depending on that third offering, you either have a joke or a scene, but either way, you have a good chance a comedy.
Either way, the third thing is where we start seeing âthe product.â The thing thing is the embodiment of âoh, I get it....â For example:
If Player A nods to Player B and says, âCatâ and Player B nods back and says âDog.â Then a lot can happen.
Player A can say, in a business like manner. âAre any other animals joining us at this business meeting?â Immediately, a lot becomes clear. These people are playing animals. Theyâre doing some kind of animal business. Hilarious.
Player A can say, âOh, I love dogs! Isnât the vet here, great?â The two make small talk while their pets are getting treatment. Eventually, they fall in love. (Player A and Player B. Not the pets. Or Do ThEy!?)
Or, Player C can enter and offer a warm, âHey, Dog!â to Player B and sit down next to them. Then, they can turn and nod in the direction of Player A with a curt, even cold, âCat.â. Player B can respond happily, so grateful to be acknowledged. Player A can respond to the frosty greeting in a way that makes Player C visibly shiver: âHelloooooo, Mouse.â
No matter which of those scenes interests you, they would all interest someone. In an audience of 150, at least a few would walk out the door of the theater that night and say, âthat one was my favorite. That group was so good. Letâs come back here soon!âÂ
Three beats makes a product. Three beats is something people will buy, buy again, and tell their friends to buy. Three beats is success.
As I embark on this journey of Shower-Ship-Succeed, I think about what I need to get to my third beat. And what occurs to me is a clear picture of what success looks like and a practical understanding of what I need to do in myself, in my actions, in my systems, and in my relationships to make that success happen.Â
Some people might argue (and they might be right) that you shouldnât get to ship without having a clear picture of success. And maybe theyâre right. But donât let that stop you from starting the creation or âshippingâ process. In fact, Iâm finding that all three of these states are iterative. You donât so much go linearly from one to the other.
You have your âshower moment.â Hopefully, you listen to it and start to work on it. You start getting ready to âship.â I call that whole process âshipping,â not just the putting-it-on-the-shelf-with-a-price-tag part. As you do that, I believe you get a vision for what this will be and who will like it and then you can start asking why they would pay for it, and that can start you on this cycle.Â
That might be a question that sends you back to the shower for more.
What about YOUR Shower, Ship, Succeed story?
I started this post with a question and then all this stuff just flowed out. (Hooray, my gift of making first drafts five times longer than they have to be!)
Hereâs what I want to know: Have you ever, as a solopreneur, or just a creator of anything, noticed a rapid procession from initial idea (Shower) to making something (Ship) to having a desired result (Succeed)?Â
What was your fastest time?
What helped you get it done so fast?
What slowed it down?
What did you have to overcome -- in the project and in yourself -- to get it done?
Now that Iâve said all I could possibly say, Iâd love to hear your stories!

Analysis: Rotting fish, lost business and piles of red tape. The reality of Brexit hits Britain
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/analysis-rotting-fish-lost-business-and-piles-of-red-tape-the-reality-of-brexit-hits-britain/
Analysis: Rotting fish, lost business and piles of red tape. The reality of Brexit hits Britain
While it should be a source of embarrassment for the PM that his deal has made life very difficult for many of the industries that he has championed post-Brexit, Johnsonâs public statements on the matter suggest he is oblivious to the reality that many are facing.
When asked for comment on the immediate consequences of the trade barriers implemented as a result of the deal, a UK government spokesperson told Appradab Business:
âFrom the outset we were clear that we would be leaving the customs union and single market which meant that there would be new processes after the end of the Transition Period. These were widely communicated through our public information campaign.â
The starkest example of what Brexit is doing to British business comes from Scotlandâs fishing industry. Despite the governmentâs claims during Brexit negotiations that the fishing industry was very near the top of its priority list, there is a real fear that the entire industry could collapse in a matter of weeks.
âWe had an entirely new system for exporters to get their heads around that hadnât been tested prior to use. The result, somewhat inevitably, was that it started going wrong straight away,â says James Withers, chief executive of Scotland Food and Drink.
âThis isnât as simple as an IT glitch that needs fixing. In a matter of days, we went from being able to send fresh food to Madrid with a single cover sheet of paperwork. Now there are roughly 26 steps for each transaction.â
The real-world impact of this means that some exporters have had the European market cut off overnight. Almost every day, pictures circulate on social media of virtually empty fish markets and boats tied up. Withers has heard stories of Scottish boats sailing 48 hours to process catches in Denmark, just to get their stock into the single market. In an industry where profit margins are often thin, every hour spent working around red tape is critical to both the freshness of the product and the productivity of the business.
When pushed on the matter, Johnson has said that he thinks these are merely teething issues and not the fault of his deal or the barriers itâs created. His spokesman explains that the government is providing ÂŁ23 million ($31.4 million) for the industry to ease the process.
When asked specifically about the fishing industry earlier this week, Johnson once again denied that the problems facing exporters had anything to do with his deal, but instead were due to restaurants being shut because of the pandemic.
However, Withers believes that money âwill run out quicklyâ and without coming to some new sort of arrangement with the European Union, âthis sort of exporting might not be sustainableâ and will âalmost certainly lead to the very people the [Prime Minister] said he was fighting for losing their jobs.â
The scenes in Scotland might not be as dramatic as the food shortages and lines of backlogged trucks that many predicted post-Brexit, but the damage is already showing up in economic data. Brexit issues are exacerbating a slowdown caused by pandemic restrictions, IHS Markit said on Friday, and lengthening suppliersâ delivery times. While 33% of manufacturers reporting a drop in exports linked the decline directly to the pandemic, some 60% linked the drop to Brexit, according to IHS.
ForagePlus, a horse nutrition business based in Wales, had dozens of parcels bound for Europe returned this week due to glitches in its shipping companyâs new systems for processing customs information. âItâs just a shambles basically,â ForagePlus founder Sarah Braithwaite told Appradab Business, adding that it had been nearly a month since the company was able to ship anything into Europe due to the pandemic and Brexit.
There is real concern among trucking companies and logistics firms that things are going to get much worse in the coming months.
Multiple sources within the affected sectors told Appradab Business that British consumers wonât feel much disruption yet, as January is a typically quiet month at ports and the United Kingdom did stockpile goods to prepare for a possible no-deal Brexit. But that could change as trade volumes increase over the coming months, putting border systems under additional pressure.
This could result in a gradual reduction in the variety of fresh produce available to British shoppers. According to a spokesperson for Logistics UK, âin the short term, while supply chains sort themselves out, it may be that we return to a more seasonal approach to shopping or have a more limited range to choose from.â This could mean that after decades of fresh fruit and vegetables at all times of the year, Brits might have to start seeing strawberries as summer treat, for example.
The region where food shortages could fast become a real issue is Northern Ireland, where images of empty supermarket shelves have circulated on social media. Due to the unique position of Northern Ireland, it has split with the rest of the United Kingdom and remained inside the EU single market, making it a lot harder to import food from Great Britain. Simon Coveney, Irelandâs foreign affairs minister, said that images showing empty shelves in Northern Irish supermarkets were âclearly a Brexit issueâ and âpart of the realityâ of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
Trade experts are concerned about the gradual decline in EU-UK trade. âThe slow decline is in some ways more dangerous than sudden food shortages,â says David Henig, UK director at the European Centre For International Political Economy. âI am particularly concerned about exporters being unable to fulfill orders and losing customers or just giving up completely. The long-term message that sends could be very damaging for inward investment,â he adds.
There are legitimate questions as to why things have been so bad, despite the United Kingdom having years to prepare for the cliff edge. âWeâve known about the risks of not being prepared for five years,â says Anna Jerzewska, founder of Trade and Borders, which assists exporters and importers across Europe.
Jerzewska says that her clients are reporting numerous complaints, but most worryingly a failure of support from the UK government to resolve their issues. âGetting an answer to a technical question could take 48 hours, which is obviously a problem for fresh produce. People in the call centers can only really point to guidance, but the guidance isnât currently fit for purpose.â
And despite everyone involved working hard to resolve the early issues, Jerzewska fears this wonât be enough to save struggling British exporters. âAt the moment itâs shock, but the underlying costs are not going away. And for traders who work at thin profit margins, an extra couple of percentage points could be the end.â
Many of Johnsonâs Conservative lawmakers are struggling with how to reply to their constituents. âThe party gave us lines to read out when the deal came through presenting it as a huge success, but as time goes on, itâs clear thereâs quite a lot of nasty surprises in Pandoraâs box,â says one Conservative member of parliament who is not permitted to speak on-the-record about government policy outside of their brief.
Others say that small local businesses are up in arms at finding out that if they want to visit Europe to sell their goods, they might need a work permit from foreign governments or paperwork allowing them to move goods into the European Union.
There isnât much optimism that things will improve in the near future among moderate Conservatives. Many are extremely worried that the gradual decline caused by Brexit will ultimately lead to Europe trying to lure Britainâs golden goose to the continent: The City of London, which hosts many of the worldâs biggest banks.
âOnce the fog of Covid lifts, financial and professional services firms looking to expand globally will see London and realize that we have given up quite a lot of our competitive advantage,â says the Conservative member of parliament.
The trade deal Johnson signed bizarrely didnât address either of these, despite them making up a huge part of the UK economy. Banks and traders in London are now hoping to be granted âequivalenceâ by the European Union, a designation that would allow them to continue serving EU clients with limited disruption.
âIf no deal is reached on equivalence for financial services or data, that could kickstart a squeeze on the city from EU regulators and leave businesses wondering what the benefit of setting up in London is if you want to serve the European market,â says Henig.
The European Union and United Kingdom are supposed to reach an agreement in March on financial services, but the mood music from both London and Brussels right now suggests that the United Kingdom is unlikely to be pulled back into the EU regulatory sphere any time soon.
Many Brexiteer lawmakers felt vindicated when the world didnât fall off its axis in the immediate aftermath of Brexit, as plenty of the anti-Brexiteersâ worst nightmares failed to materialize. However, if the current trajectory of gradual decline continues, the slide could become uncontrollable.
Those politicians will have to explain to voters why they encouraged their prime minister to pursue such a hard Brexit despite the warnings of its consequences. They have a couple of months before things get really bad to put pressure on Johnson to start engaging with the reality of Brexit a little more.
The question that matters most to those struggling is how bad things must get before those who most vocally supported Brexit are willing to break ranks and admit the truth: that leaving the worldâs largest trading bloc has immediate consequences.
