How To Begin With Your Very First Invention
The little light bulb inside your head has lit up as well as you are stuck with the idea that you developed something You are uncertain yet just how useful your idea goes to this time around, however, something. informs you that this may be the Luck you were searching for. What you do next and exactly how you approach your next actions is exceptionally vital as well as will certainly either lead you on to splendor or will ruin your endeavor. The steps that I will certainly lay out a little later may appear unneeded; nonetheless, I want to guarantee you that in the end, you will certainly be happy that you took my suggestions.
Before we wage the discussion, I would love to provide a couple of words of knowledge. While working with your concept you will certainly experience individuals who will slam your job and also attempt to prevent you from forging ahead. Several of the objection will certainly be deserved as well as the need to be taken into account. If you see that a valid point is raised that you never thought about before - the much better off you are. It permits you to stop briefly as well as see your concept from another perspective (or angle). Nonetheless, you might additionally encounter a supposed devastating objection that is not based upon any type of facts.
When you learn exactly how to separate these two, you will be far better off. My recommendations to you -
- Do not be afraid to inquiry experts, since the majority of specialists are one-track minded and oblivious to various other points
- Do not be afraid to test other people's ideas, wait for your principles and also be firm
When you are ready to market your idea, you will need to take care of big firms. Bear in mind that the bigger the firm is, the more bureaucratic it is. Lots of big companies lose focus and also often work with staff members who are either not received the job, or just not interested in what they are doing. If you stumble upon these individuals that are attempting to make you feel trivial (and also your concept unimportant as well as not practical) don't get dissuaded by this - opportunities are you will certainly be far better off dealing with a smaller company that is extra focused and also going to take dangers!
- Do not be afraid to find that your idea is malfunctioning. Time out, make corrections, re-analyze as well as move ahead
Action 1 - Stay Focused and Document Your Idea
This action has significant benefits, because -
1. You will plainly define your invention idea 2. While documenting your idea, you may locate means on exactly how to increase your invention
Constantly attempt to place on paper what it is that you designed - precisely define your suggestion, its objective, restrictions, and target audience. If you can not exactly define your idea, after that this implies that you need to take an action back, re-analyze your reasoning, and streamline things.
Case Study 1
In the final evaluation, John K. should have stopped right before making any type of adjustments to his initial Automatic Knife System and also asked himself the adhering to - am I better off with the original system or with a pedestrian mechanism that has extra features? Are the extra attributes also required?
While laboring difficult on his invention, John K. creates technical illustrations and decides that his future product will profit from the enhancement of additional things - a scissor as well as a screwdriver. The enhancement of these products makes the last product larger and much heavier.
The above example clearly shows the following - focus on your initial concept and also disregard additional, superfluous attributes that could muddle your vision. Additional attributes will certainly enter into play later on, as soon as you clearly explained as well as formed your invention.
Action 2 Exploratory Stages - Determine if your concept is distinct
Once you've documented your concept, you should start thinking about the following - exactly how unique is my concept? To answer these questions, you will have to do some legwork and hit your local library and also the net. Unless you allowed a huge quantity of your spending plan to Patent Attorney, who will investigate for you, you will certainly be much better off doing a preliminary study by yourself. Why? Because you might uncover during your exploratory searches that your style is not one-of-a-kind and also save yourself from paying Large Legal representative fees. A note of care - don't get dissuaded if you determine that the suggestion similar to your own already exists and also already patented. The reality that a person concerned similar conclusions as you, just a bit previously is excellent - you have competitors! Competitors are good, competition is healthy and balanced! Very carefully check out the contending item, even take it apart, if required. Determine what separates your concept from rivals, its restrictions, and also just how effective it was an additional individual (or a business) with marketing it. As you can see, you can really learn from the mistakes of others, prevent their blunders, as well as advance fully aware of the competitors and also their constraints.
Action 3 - Product Security Considerations
Whether you determined to create a baby product or some sort of house device, special care must be absorbed describing potential hazards associated with using your product. If you invented a new plaything developed for small children, attempt to come up with the listing of parts that can damage your little customers. Remember that lots of people, regrettably, neglect exploitation handbooks. Establish what can or might fail with the operation of your product and also identify means on just how to boost item safety. The questions that you might ask on your own are the complying with -
1. Am I using proper materials? 2. Maybe the part which contains the most risks should be revamped?
Attempt to find up with a comprehensive list of parts that can be potentially unsafe as well as fix your style before you start marketing your item. You might think of this step as unneeded, but let me alert you - most advertising business will need you to explain all Safety attributes of your idea, and you could save yourself a long time by doing preparations in advance. Find out more advice by visiting InventHelp Wiki
Step 4 - Demographics and Determining who will Utilize Your Item
Ones you have a clear image of your item and also you worked out all nuances of product style, attempt to determine that will certainly utilize your item, when, and where. Try to ask on your own the adhering to inquiries -
1. What is the age brace of the target market? 2. Is my product developed for Guy, Females, or Both? 3. Where and also when can it be made use of?
Your product is most likely customized for sure sectors (for example, farming); after that think about those that will profit the most from your invention! If your product is designed to collaborate with certain dirt or crops, then you ought to target geographical region rich with preferred features. As one can see, this action needs comprehensive study, preparation, as well as leg job; the advantages, on the other hand, will be payoff satisfying!
Appropriately responding to these questions will assist you properly market your product and also remain abreast of the competition. Also, recognizing the solution to those questions will help you in putting finishing touches on your product. Exactly how? If your item is made for youngsters, then it should be brilliant as well as vibrant. If your item is designed for a chilly environment, you need to stay clear of advertising it in areas where it's warm all year long.
Step 5 - Create Complete or Little Range Design of Your Item
It is exceptionally essential to create a working model off of your concept. Why? By having a real-life design of your idea (or a scaled-down variation of it), will help you to -
1. Determine its constraints as well as provides you a chance to re-think some aspects of your preliminary layout and also make necessary improvements 2. Improve your last style
Along with those things, the last version will certainly help you psychologically. There is no much better feeling than having the ability to physically see and also touch the production of your mind! The truth that you are touching the real-life version of your last style will certainly provide you a positive mental increase equal to no other you've experienced during the design procedure, encouraging you much more to succeed!
As soon as you prepared your version, try to determine what materials will enter right into the building of the real-life product. Will your item be developed of plaster or metal? If metal, after that what kind of metal - is it lightweight aluminum, copper, or some type of alloy? As soon as you establish the essential materials, estimate the manufacturing price since the rate that you'll charge for your item will certainly depend on the production cost of each device. You do not need to be 100% appropriate at this phase with your product options, yet it's great to recognize what materials will enter into the production of your product so that you have a ball-park figure on the last cost of your item.
The best method to approach this step is to attempt as well as make use of a notepad the final version of your product, the method you see it now. Your illustrations ought to show your final idea/product under various angles, in a 2-D and 3-D. The picture could not be rather because not many people have essential illustration abilities. However, this attractive task will assist you profoundly strengthen your style and pinpoint products that you still require to service. Also, I highly advise that you produce your initial item prototype from clay or any other material that is easily available. Why? This model together with initial illustration will assist you to discuss your concept to the technical individual who, subsequently, will change your layout right into a very technical design illustration.
Step 6 - Estimate Cost and also Gross Profit
When you established that will certainly use your product as well as where (or your product's market), it is time to believe "huge" - try to exercise cost/benefit analysis of your product. Below is a case study -
Mary A., a homemaker with 3 little children, designed a plastic bottle holder for babies and also tiny young children. Her bottle owner was designed as if it would hold both the bottles, spoons and also container caps. Mary A. developed countless illustrations of her product as well as with the help of her hubby handled to create a major variation of her product constructed from clay. Before entailing an engineer, Mary A. approximated that her item will be made totally out of plastic. The approximated manufacturing cost of 1 bottle holder is $3.00 (we assume that the factory lies in China and also delivery prices are currently factored into the approximated manufacturing expense). Mary A. did comparative purchasing and established that other sorts of Child Owners are marketing around 15 dollars. Also, Mary learned that three local baby shops each offer 1000 consumers per day (including online purchases); also, each shop calls for a 40% compensations per each acquisition - implying that $6 is paid as a commission to the store for every $15 purchase. Mary A. promptly figured out that her total earnings will be $6 per each container holder ($ 15 - $6 - $3). Assume that one-third of all consumers in each store have either infants or toddlers who still require container owners (roughly 330 customers per shop), Mary A. can create earnings in the quantity of 330 X 3 X 6 = $5940.
Step 7 - Product Advertising
The right advertising technique is necessary for the success of your suggestion. Partnering with an advertising and marketing company that you can trust and also rely upon will pay large rewards over time and also need to not be neglected. What should you find out about marketing firms? The majority of these businesses are split into two groups (I will call them groups An and B) -
Team B: These businesses provide inventors complete flexibility in marketing their suggestions. Inventors pick what to state and also concentrate on highlight locations that they believe are most relevant to their invention. IdeaJets is a market where individuals with suggestions as well as companies who look for sharp minds fulfill. Along with assisting you to find an appropriate partner that can aid you to understand your suggestions as well as desires, IdeaJets likewise brings inventors in contact with various other enthusiastic people to cultivate as well as advertise the society of creativeness as well as success. You can meet your other inventors making use of the IdeaJets messaging system or in Online forums. With any luck, by sharing concepts and points of view, individuals might see their inventions or concepts in a new light, improve, and also re-define them to more increase their possibilities to succeed. Since now, IdeaJets is completely complimentary!
Team A: These companies assert that they have particular expertise and inside connections in a broad variety of sectors. In addition to been expensive, numerous firms that belong to this group are implicated in scams, and also the creator must very carefully consider who they are dealing with.

You're so mind-blowingly brilliant -- your posts never cease to make my day! I don't even have a tumblr account, but I check your page at least ten times/day, hoping for a new analysis. Reading your essay on "folklore"'s dreamscape felt like an acid trip in the best possible way. Please share your thoughts on the original "Cardigan" lyrics ASAP!
Thanks, anon! You’ve got me blushing like a damn fool over here 😊 You’re always welcome on this blog, lurking or otherwise!
Okay so this is more a line of reasoning that starts at the OG “cardigan,” not just lyric analysis. I’m not exactly sure how to organize all these thoughts so I’m just going to put them in the order that they came. Apologies if this is a mess. (And under a cut because I can’t shut up lmao)
To me, the OG “cardigan” is the antithesis of the song as we now know it. That got me thinking about how the core of the album might have been much different too.
The album-making process started with “my tears ricochet.” (I believe this song is from Karlie’s point of view, per the notes in the dreamscape essay.) I’m assuming Taylor didn’t edit this song much. She has implied in the past that a song is “written” when it takes musical form (i.e. lyrics literally get put to a track). The idea of a dead lover is also extremely compelling. She made “cardigan,” “seven,” and “peace” next.
It’s likely that these four songs represent folklore’s original ideological pillars. The common thread of Aaron’s three songs (both versions of “cardigan”) is the idea of age or maturity. “peace” and “seven” are age-related endpoints and “cardigan” is a midway point. “my tears ricochet” happens to be an endpoint (i.e. dying, as opposed to reaching an adult maturity).
From these songs, I extrapolate that Taylor wanted to explore emotional growth specifically by addressing Peter Pan and Wendy’s philosophical disagreement. (Also…veer off into gay childhood trauma.) “peace” is about the strongest argument anyone could make in favor of Wendy—growing up is necessary, especially in order to love and treat someone properly. (This song even argues for mutual maturity/understanding.) “my tears ricochet” is the fallout if two people end up fighting with each other, not for each other. OG “cardigan” comes down on Peter’s side—if given the choice to preserve youth or yield to age, one should prefer the former. The album was to transform an endorsement of Peter into an endorsement of Wendy.
The three songs done with Aaron were likely written to appear in the order they do today: “cardigan” as exposition, then “seven,” then “peace.” Observe that to chart a course hitting all four songs, Taylor has to align OG “cardigan” with “my tears ricochet.” “seven” can stand on its own, provided she pads it with enough storytelling. “peace” and “my tears ricochet” cannot both be endpoints of the story, especially because they are at odds with each other. The mutual understanding in “peace” is not at all consistent with the hatred and sadness in “my tears ricochet.” Thus, the track list requires the partial ordering of OG “cardigan,” then “my tears ricochet,” then (much later) “peace.”
Let’s talk about OG “cardigan.” The first verse paints the potrait of Karlie. “Vintage tee, brand new phone // high heels on cobblestones // when you are young they assume you know nothing” alludes to the glamor of modeling, plus its stereotype as the profession of being young, dumb, and beautiful. “Livin’ in a gold age // sneakin’ to my bird cage” reintroduces the tension of reputation, youth and freedom at odds with oppressive forces. “Laughin’ like a damn fool // breakin’ every damn rule” contrasts the characterization of Karlie in the verse. She instead has a marvelous time being hot, smart, and moderately evil. Through this contrast, Taylor suggests that the power of youth is the freedom to choose to ignore very serious problems (pseudo-escapism?). The OG outro full of zingers is Taylor’s perspective as someone who gets burned by the freedom of choice. Young Karlie leaves young Taylor because the high of reputation-era antics wears off. Then, old Taylor, still affected by this loss, also loses her mind in a reverse-“Don’t Blame Me” kinda way.
Word choice, to me, suggests that “cardigan” was originally conceived not as the Breakup Song of the Cenozoic Era but a narrative partner of “illicit affairs.” Karlie and Taylor are on the same team in OG “cardigan.” They have a marvelous time being hot, smart, and moderately evil and breaking all the damn rules together. “You know damn well // for you I would ruin myself” gets spit back in Taylor’s face and is that much more impactful.
Karlie is justified in leaving because the moment dies. This phrase describes a relationship that mutually and/or slowly dwindles. Karlie makes a decision to leave and save herself, and indeed makes the better choice because she retains her wild and her sanity. Hence, Peter wins the argument.
It’s unclear when “exile” was written, but I think it was early on in the process because Taylor added bird noises to it. “exile” plus OG “cardigan”/“illicit affairs” illustrates two joint affairs, such as double bearding. Pronoun issues with the second verse of “cardigan” aside, Karlie’s eventual downfall (i.e. the emotional end of “illicit affairs”) is implied to be a result of Taylor…also cheating? Maybe it’s the whole Friends “we were on a break” thing. (IDK, I’ve never actually seen Friends.)
OG “cardigan,” “illicit affairs,” and “exile” were once closely affiliated. More pertinently, by the partial ordering, “illicit affairs” and “exile” were meant to explain how OG “cardigan” connects to “my tears ricochet.” Karlie leaves Taylor during their illicit affair; the affair ruins Karlie; Karlie dies and Taylor shows up at the funeral because she’s pissed; Karlie becomes a vengeful ghost and Taylor is also emotionally ruined forever. Scene.
But these are not the connections that Taylor put out into the world. Obviously we can never know precisely why. One thing that does stick out to me, though, is how hard it is to turn around and align with Wendy given the illicit affair narrative.
In “peace,” Taylor shows her own maturity by acknowledging that she was cowardly and dishonorable. For what? Karlie left her in OG “cardigan,” not the other way around. Taylor runs away with someone else in “exile” (“him), ostensibly to enjoy a more stable relationship. Her playing the role of the angry funeralgoer in “my tears ricochet” is perfectly reasonable. Taylor was promised love and Karlie didn’t give her what she needed, so she moved on. Therefore, we should conclude that maturity is really…hanging onto someone who doesn’t stay? Having the courage to stay in an incredibly tenuous affair? Apparently, one also must be cheated on in order to mature. These are all strange conclusions.
Taylor illustrates Karlie’s maturity with a monologue of numerous promises—of pretty much everything except peace itself. The illicit affair narrative does strongly support the argument that maturity is learning how to stay true to one’s word. Yet its logical beginning is that one must cheat on another—plus be unfaithful to the person they are cheating with—in order to mature. (Karlie gets burned by the freedom of choice only when she later faces the consequences of the affair.) Also strange.
The illicit affair narrative as a primary emotional catalyst of the album generates even bigger inconsistencies.
“august” both humanizes the person cheated with and leaves them worse off than the cheater. “my tears ricochet” emphasizes the opposite: the one cheated with stays alive and becomes a very ugly person, but the cheater dies.
Arguably, both people should have anticipated the fallout of the (implied to be years-long) affair. “my tears ricochet” is internally inconsistent. “I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace” suggests Karlie died an unfortunate or unforeseen death, not an inevitable one. “You turned into your worst fears” suggests Taylor turned around and became a cheater too.
“invisible string” can support the argument that Taylor and Karlie were always bound to get back together after a breakup. Morally dubious underwriting of the initial affair notwithstanding, this song contradicts “mad woman.” Taylor wrote “mad woman” song shortly after “peace;” in it, she is staunchly against cheating. (She avoids morally dubious underwriting of illicit activity on the album by axing the OG “cardigan”/“illicit affairs”/“exile” narrative, then condemning cheating and seducing in “mad woman” and “illicit affairs,” respectively.)
Again, it is impossible to know when, why, or even exactly how the narrative of the album changed as Taylor was writing it. The dramatization I’ve provided of inconsistencies piling up is only one plausible explanation—and a convoluted one at that—for a change of artistic heart. Whatever the reason, I think it is significant that Taylor performed a volte face to never argue in favor of Peter in the first place.
The album version of “cardigan,” and indeed the entire love triangle, supports Wendy’s side of the argument. “cardigan” shows that James and Betty’s relationship was vibrant, joyous, thrilling, and tender, but above all, perfect. The tone of the song helps Taylor denounce James’ choice to leave Betty as cruel and unnecessary. It is James’ fault for leaving once the “thrill expired,” not Betty’s fault for believing James would stay after the honeymoon phase. “betty” reinforces James’ characterization as the ignorant fool too. Because the album necessarily pigeonholes the leaver in the role of the coward, Wendy wins the argument on the grounds of moral fiber.
(James technically ‘wins’ in “august” because the titular character is left devastated and alone. August embodies youth through hope and yearning. James’ lack of conviction kills that hope. Thus, youthful traits are always collateral damage of the entire maturing process. And, the narrative that pits the characters against each other ends with James, regarded as the paradigm youth, losing the most.)
Perhaps this is the best justification for the existence of the teenage love triangle. Introducing characters who are maturing in various ways still allows Taylor to explore emotional growth. Three separate but fixed perspectives act as a proxy for one person’s changing perspective. By aligning herself with each character at a different time in their life, she shows that maturity (e.g. realism, reliability, patience, etc.) always gives one the upper hand.
The love triangle’s main purpose is to illustrate the philosophy that permeates the rest of the album. folklore as we know it is Taylor’s memorial to all the things lost to youth. Maturity would have prevented so many losses. At the same time, it is impossible to mature without first being youthful, making mistakes, and feeling lost while doing so. This is Taylor’s singular but melancholic endorsement of Wendy. How sad, valuable, and necessary, she says of growing up.
Lest my point be misinterpreted as ‘we can confidently reverse-engineer Taylor’s artistic process,’ here are my main takeaways from the “cardigan” changes:
OG “cardigan” is sad and we should appreciate it as such. “I knew to love would be to lose my mind?” Please.
“cardigan,” as a midway point with respect to age, is the only ideologically ‘variable’ song of the original quartet. Furthermore, by placement and construction, “cardigan” is/was intended to be expository. Changing “cardigan” changes the course she charts through the album. Taking sadness out of one song and spreading it over a storytelling album really changes the meaning of that sadness.
Of the eponymous characters, it’s worth noting that Taylor is James, the leaver, whereas she is left in the OG “cardigan.” It’s utterly fascinating that Taylor chooses to embody ‘hanging on to youth’ angle. What we assume is a very deep, primal feeling is one she overemphasizes for narrative purposes. Consequently, dismissing the love triangle as (fix-it) fiction requires dismissing Taylor’s attachment to youth—being Peter. To that end, we might also need to dismiss the infamous “I never grew up, it’s getting so old” line from “The Archer.” Many others, too…
Red herring though it may be, the love triangle alters folklore’s underlying philosophy, hence the very essence of its melancholy. It seems rather unwise to ignore the love triangle or to reduce it to a cheesy storytelling device. Recognizing that Taylor endorses Wendy and only Wendy is, in my opinion, crucial for clarifying other nebulous ideas in folklore. (I know I sound like a broken record, but I really do think abstraction in the music requires abstraction in analysis. It’s really easy to fall into the habit of tying specific lyrics to people or events. Personally, I find richer and deeper connections by actively working against that habit. I’m not saying this is the only way to do analysis—on the contrary, I think all analysis is correct because it’s all subjective. Rather, I think people overlook the value of occasional abstraction, much to my distress. folklore analysis even seems to demand abstraction. Sue me for believing that things like the underlying philosophy of an album are important, I guess?)
Would you believe that there’s more to this change than what I’ve argued? I’m weary that this is answer is already not what you wanted, so I won’t bang on and quadruple its length. In conclusion: the Implications.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality: Initial impressions
Titles can be deceiving.
CW: child abuse, childhood trauma, mental illness, depression, anxiety
I think I can recall hearing about Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality at some point in the fairly distant past, though I can’t be sure. What I can say with relative certainty is that if I did encounter it, I probably wasn’t very likely to read it. I probably assumed that HPMOR was one of those obnoxiously misguided and pedantic critiques of fiction by scientists who neither know how to utilize suspension of disbelief, nor understand the basic nature of symbolism. At best, I might have imagined it to be a piece attempting to discover or construct a coherent logic from the magic within the Harry Potter universe, just for the pure amusement value, the absurdity of attempting to apply logic to that which defies it. I could see the appeal of that, but probably not 122 chapters worth of it.
After actually reading the first ten chapters of HPMOR, however, I can say that my first guess was incorrect, and my second guess was insufficient. HPMOR does capitalize on that humorous absurdity, but that’s hardly the core of the story.
One major reason for my misperceptions was a lack of familiarity with the difference between science and rationality. In layspeak, we often use these terms near interchangeably, and while they do go hand-in-hand to some extent, they’re not the same. Science is a method of obtaining knowledge. Rationality is an approach to living life, which dictates utilizing philosophy and science to obtain desired outcomes. You can be a scientist and be completely irrational, which actually reflects back on my initial concern; there are some scientists who will attempt to use the theory and language of science to denigrate works of art, completely ignoring the point of art.
HPMOR itself deals with this problem, not only the conflation of science with rationality, but the conflation of science and rationality and aptitude and general intelligence. The very first chapter highlights how AU Harry’s (Harry James Potter-Evans-Verres, HJPEV for short) father is a professor, knowledgeable about science, presumably quite intelligent, and yet behaves incredibly irrationally. Rather than attempting to settle the dispute about the existence of magic objectively, he refuses to entertain the idea on principle, saying, “Magic is just about the most unscientific thing there is!”
And here’s where the real story begins to unfold. What makes HPMOR hit hard, at least for me, is not the discussion of science and rationality in the abstract, or even the very useful, illustrative scenarios, but the emotional struggle of trying to be a rational person in an irrational world, especially when you’re a child. In so many ways, HPMOR is a story about the trauma of growing up as a so-called “gifted” child. Almost every chapter that I read was painfully reminiscent of my own childhood:
Seeing my parents speculate and argue endlessly over things that could be proven;
Attempting to reason with them only to be shut down;
Having my value in their eyes dependent on their perception of my intelligence and academic performance, being praised for when I was perceived to have succeeded in these matters, while at the same time having my perspective completely ignored when it came to anything that mattered;
Being mocked relentlessly for things I did when I was younger, ignoring the incredibly rapid growth that defines childhood;
Constantly feeling as though, as HJPEV puts it, I was being treated as “subhuman,” my feelings, thoughts, and opinions all invalid because of my age;
Feeling so, so frustrated that the people who were supposed to protect me were so absurdly, ridiculously, unfairly, woefully, tragically ill-equipped to do so.
I became hopelessly isolated from my parents, and my self-esteem became self-degrading. Being told over and over again how what I felt or thought didn’t matter because I was only a child made me doubt and disrespect my own emotions and doubt my very sanity. I don’t think that my parents meant to gaslight me, but that’s exactly what they did. For years, and years, and years, and it hurts. so. much. It...I cannot express how much it hurts.
And I am left with all of this damage, these lines of irrationality programmed into my brain, this obsessive need to to be perceived as intelligent in order to believe that I could be loved, in order to merely function, this irrationality that I hate so much because it hurt me so much is now encoded into my very being and it fills me with existential horror to this day.
It was difficult for me to get through as much of HPMOR as I did, and I genuinely wonder if it would be detrimental to my mental health to go on. It triggers both the suffering that comes with remembering past trauma as well as the compulsions that have resulted from that trauma. Hearing HJPEV list all the books he’s read sends a bolt of anxiety down my spine, knowing that I will never measure up to people like him, I will never have read enough, I will never be smart enough, I will never...be...enough—
Enough. I know when to stop torturing myself.
I was shocked to see how quickly HPMOR itself comes to the conclusion that what HJPEV has endured is a form of child abuse. It took me years to become comfortable using the words “abuse” and “trauma” to describe my experiences, and HPMOR introduces the word “abuse” in Chapter 6! I give HPMOR’s McGonagall much less credit than HJPEV does, but even so, it’s kind of astonishing to me to see an adult pick up on the existence of abuse in a so-called gifted child, even in fiction. I find myself wondering how I might have turned out differently if I had had someone like McGonagall in my life, or someone better than McGonagall in my life, who had told me in no uncertain terms, “What is happening to you is abuse, it is not okay, it is not your fault, and while I’m unable to legally extricate you from your unfortunate circumstances, I will do everything in my power to protect you.”
Because that didn’t happen. No one told me that I was abused or damaged. They told me that I was “smart,” “gifted,” “advanced,” or “mature”; and if they noticed anything odd about my behavior, it was because I was just “quiet,” “shy,” “introverted,” or “diligent.”
I also find myself wondering if I might have been a little different if I had read HPMOR when I first had the chance. But then again, I don’t know if I would have understood it as I do now, after years of studying psychology and working to heal myself.
God, seeing it all laid out so starkly, things I worked years to understand, in a few short chapters of someone’s fucking fanfiction*...I sure do feel like an idiot.
But then, this whole conversation has primed me to feel those feelings.
I must not undervalue myself. I am not playing that game. That game is the problem.
One thing does irritate me, though. Putting aside my misconceptions about HMPOR specifically, there’s this huge barrier to entry to the rationalist community in general. I think people perceive (correctly, as far as I can tell) that it is a community of highly intelligent people, who are highly skilled in STEM disciplines, particularly math. The one friend who could have introduced me to all this was someone who I saw as hopelessly more intelligent than I, and that perceived disparity made it incredibly difficult to approach him even as I admired him, envied him, and desperately needed the things that he could teach me. (I don’t know what things were like on his end. I still don’t.)
We’ve already seen that someone can be highly intelligent and completely irrational. I wish we could take that logic a step further and really make clear that rationality is not something that requires high intelligence. As with learning anything, intelligence helps, but intelligence can’t be a prerequisite for this skillset, because literally everyone should have it. I guess this might be controversial, but so far as I can tell, rationality is just the best way to go through life. And of course, knowing the best way to move forward is especially critical for those of us leaving behind dark pasts.
For fuck’s sake, this doesn’t have anything to do with quarks or discrete math or machine learning. It has everything to do with reducing human suffering.
And I wish...I really wish that there was a way to share this world with my friends. The only reason that I made it here is that I’ve constantly existed on the borderline, wavering around the threshold of what is broadly considered intelligent, attempting mastery of both STEM and humanities, science and art. As much as I doubt and denigrate myself, I am able, if I really want to, under certain favorable circumstances, to convince myself that I belong here. Not all of my friends have the same privilege. I have friends who have lived their whole lives believing that they just aren’t that smart, or that they aren’t any good at math or science. Maybe they decided early on that that stuff wasn’t for them, or maybe they tried and felt like they failed. I know that, for many people, academic language is frustrating, triggering, or otherwise completely inaccessible. I know that many people will find HJPEV absolutely insufferable and most of what he says incomprehensible.
And I’m really not sure what to do about that. I’ve not sure how to convince people that striving for rationality is both possible and worthwhile for everyone, and if I do convince them, I’m not sure what to actually show them that will make any sense to them.
I don’t know. Maybe it does have a bit to do with math. Because a lot of what I get from rationality, I can get from other places, be that art or psychology or witchcraft, but the stuff that is unique does tend to be the mathematical and statistical thinking. And philosophical thinking, academic thinking. Talking about things with precision...That’s always been my problem with trying to translate the academic into ordinary speech, it feels like all the precision is being lost. To be precise, you need unique words, and unique words tend to be obscure, and people find obscure words upsetting.
Obviously, this isn’t a problem I’m going to solve in this blog post. But it’s something to think about.
So, I guess that’s my review of the first ten chapters of HPMOR, if you can call it that. If one of the purposes of fiction is to unlock a bizarrely intense cocktail of existential horror and unadulterated wrath deriving from the wrongs of one’s childhood—and I certainly believe it is—then HPMOR succeeds spectacularly.
*Edited to add: In my unfortunate compulsion to drag myself down, I often drag down other things or people too. I shouldn’t trivialize the value of fanfiction. And, quite honestly, I really shouldn’t be surprised that it could be a source of profound insight. After all, writing fanfiction has been one of my own ways to cope with and sort through my emotions and illnesses for a long, long time.

to help yourself understand the Mueller investigation, read this novel
“This novel” being, of course, a stack of court documents filed in the course of the investigation.
Hear me out.
This isn’t to trivialize or sensationalize an ongoing existential threat to western democracy. Precisely because it is not a fucking game, I think it’s really important for people to get new ways into this story. Because it still seems alarmingly common for even generally well-informed people to throw up their hands and say “well, the right says ‘no collusion!’ and liberals say ‘he’s a Russian agent!’ but the partisans all seem really worked up, I guess the truth is somewhere in between/it must not be as big a deal as they think.”
Maybe sometimes that’s motivated reasoning or sheer ignorance. But it’s also possible that “this Rusher thing with Trump and Russia” is unusually resistant to understanding as a conventional news story. We want our news to be solid, with “hard facts.” Maybe this is more like gas. Like gas, it always takes up as much space as it’s allowed. On slow news days it can expand to envelop everything else; unrelated dramatic events can compress it down to almost nothing. And you can’t get a grip on gas.
This whole bizarre situation is genuinely unprecedented in American history, which is perhaps why special prosecutor Robert Mueller has been doing something unusual in issuing a series of speaking indictments. Remember, a bill of indictment is basically a list of the crimes that a prosecutor has convinced a grand jury that someone has probably committed. Prosecutors are smart to keep these minimal, because every fact they allege in their indictment, they damn well have to be ready to prove. A speaking indictment means that the prosecutor is saying more than they have to say. In a case like this – which deals with a lot of sensitive information, and implicates people who haven’t yet been charged or even interviewed – that’s even trickier, because there’s a lot it has to avoid.
Generally, when a person makes their own job harder, they’re doing it for a reason. And I think at least part of the reason here is that the special prosecutor’s office is trying to tell the American public a story. Our minds can comprehend dramatic plot lines more easily than the seedy, fact-heavy, choppily-paced web of a real criminal conspiracy. There’s a narrative logic to the pre-election events described in the most notable speaking indictments in the order we’ve seen them, moving relentlessly closer in time, space, and relationship to Donald Trump on Election Day, 2016.
So if you’re frustrated or baffled by what you catch of this story in the news or on your Facebook feed, it’s not because you, personally, can’t understand it. You might just need a new angle of approach. If you are a movie person, I can recommend the documentary Active Measures (Hulu, iTunes). If you’re more of a reader, these documents, in this order, can be read like an epistolary novel – specifically, a pulpy, beach read-y spy thriller.
Part I: United States of America v. Paul J. Manafort, Jr. and Richard W. Gates III
Part II: United States of America v. Internet Research Agency, et al
Part III: United States of America v. Paul J. Manafort, Jr. and Konstantin Kilimnik
Part IV: United States of America v. Viktor Borisovich Netyksho, et al
Part V: United States of America v. Michael Cohen (a)(b)
Part VI: United States of America v. Roger Jason Stone, Jr.
TO BE CONTINUED [probably]…
I’m serious. Download the pdfs onto your e-reader – remember to make a note of the order! – brew yourself some tea, and turn off pop-up notifications for a while. (Don’t get too hung up on figuring out who “Organization 1″ or “Person 2″ are - sometimes it’ll be obvious, but don’t worry if it’s not. You can just treat the big tables like illustrations: look and see what they’re about, but you don’t need to read every line to get the gist. You can also skip the last page or so if you start hitting headers like “statutory allegations” or “substitute assets.” There’s no post-credits stingers.)
These aren’t all the documents that have been filed in court by the special counsel, let alone in related cases, and I doubt even the courts have heard the whole story yet. Most of the documents related to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn are still redacted. Maria Butina was charged by a different prosecutor’s office just as she was about to make a run for it, but her infiltration of the National Rifle Association could quite possibly be Chekhov’s gun. And it doesn’t even mention the UK spinoff! But I think they’re the ones that are, intentionally, useful to someone who wants to understand.
Still skeptical? Recap/analysis below.
Part I: United States of America v. Paul J. Manafort, Jr. and Richard W. Gates III
The first indictment of Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort took its focus far away from, and several years before, the main story, deep into a 2010 election in Ukraine which ominously foreshadowed the 2016 election. Manafort, an old friend of Stone, a Trump Tower resident, and the employer of his co-defendant Rick Gates and of future Sanders consultant Tad Devine, ran the campaign of a buffoonish businessman who was in hock to the Russian government. Their strategy relied heavily on exacerbating ethnic tensions within Ukraine and seeding skepticism about international alliances, as well as a vicious smear campaign of his opponent, an accomplished public servant who would have been the nation’s first woman president. Manafort’s candidate took office, was exactly as bad as his opponents believed he would be, and had his opponent imprisoned and tortured – but was eventually forced to release her and flee the country for Russia.
Part II: United States of America v. Internet Research Agency, et al
The Internet Research Agency indicted Russian nationals who worked on the propaganda campaign, spending over a million dollars a month to manipulate American public opinion from a nondescript office building in St. Petersburg. The action starts in 2014 and picks up in 2016, but still takes place a continent away. It deliberately stays away from the hacking and dumping of Democratic party emails, and pointedly does not accuse any Americans of committing crimes.
Part III: United States of America v. Paul J. Manafort, Jr. and Konstantin Kilimnik
An installment with a foot in both worlds indicted Manafort and a Ukraine-based co-conspirator, while also showing Manafort’s corruption of a respected American law firm. This part shows us how Trump’s campaign manager – both his dirty politics and his illicit money – moved from Ukraine to the United States, set in the same time frame as Part II.
Part IV: United States of America v. Viktor Borisovich Netyksho, et al
Then another indictment did name the Russian military intelligence officers who stole Democrats’ emails in the spring of 2016, and traced their cooperation with “Organization 1,” which released those emails. This moves the story closer in time to the election, and shows the stolen data moving west from Moscow to Julian Assange’s hideout in London before being dumped on the American public.
Part V: United States of America v. Michael Cohen (a)(b)
The next installment targeted Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen, a New Yorker like Trump. Cohen pleaded guilty to hiding what appears to have been early 2016 real estate negotiations for a property in Moscow, and of committing apparently unrelated crimes to affect the election illicitly by covering up the candidate’s affairs in the weeks before the election. The Southern District of New York – filing at the same time and in clear cooperation with the special prosecutor, but not working directly for him – overtly said it could prove Trump’s complicity in crimes. Trump is tagged “Individual 1.”
Part VI: United States of America v. Roger Jason Stone, Jr.
Currently in the barrel is Roger Stone, a longtime supporter of Trump’s political career and an old business partner of Manafort. Stone has a colorful backstory of extensive wrongdoing, but his indictment is laser-focused on conversations he had with a known Russian intelligence cutout in the summer and fall of 2016, and the crimes and lies he tried to use to hide those conversations. This indictment mentions the Trump campaign by name, and it includes a lot of specific conduct by individuals who are not named but are nonetheless readily identifiable. The document is succinct, clinical, clear as a bell. But it leaves one omission which leaped out screaming at just about everyone who read the whole document.
[A] senior Trump Campaign official was directed to contact STONE about any additional releases and what other damaging information Organization 1 had regarding the Clinton Campaign.
If you’ve taken high school English, you already know the million ruble question. “Was directed”? Who gave that direction? The indictment doesn’t say.
If you’re trying to avoid drawing conclusions the way a newscaster might, you would probably think it was not another senior campaign officer – otherwise, why not refer to them as “Senior Campaign Officer 2”? – but still someone important enough to boss around a senior campaign officer. Maybe if the candidate had adult family members who were not given official positions on the campaign, they would be suspects – though only because they could reasonably be assumed to be speaking for the most likely culprit. The simplest explanation for They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Pseudonymed is the most dramatic one. The candidate is not a senior campaign officer. The candidate is the candidate.
We don’t have all the facts yet. The only thing we can be sure of is that the special prosecutor has, quite deliberately, not yet shown this particular card.
But if you’ve taken high school English, you have a pretty good idea about the answer.
Okay, the genre snob reviewers might say it’s a little heavy-handed. Personally, I’ve always felt that subtlety is overrated.

How Berkshire Hathaway May Have Been Snookered in Germany
While, unknown to the public, German manufacturer Wilhelm Schulz teetered on the edge of bankruptcy, the company was under consideration for being acquired by Precision Castparts (owned by Berkshire Hathaway) for $870 million. The CEO of William Schulz developed a plan to improve the financial statements by borrowing $8 million from a bank and creating fake invoices. If you were an IT employee assigned to create the fake invoices what would you do: (1) do as directed, (2) refuse to do so, (3) blow-the-whistle to Bershire Hathaway? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Only a few weeks after Berkshire Hathaway bought what looked like an upstanding example of German engineering prowess, a manager in Warren Buffett’s widely admired corporate empire received an unsettling email.
“I have to get rid of something I witnessed in the last few months,” the anonymous author wrote in slightly awkward English. “There is a falsification of data going on.”
The whistle-blower’s tip eventually led to the exposure of an elaborate conspiracy involving fake sales invoices, phantom customers and hacked computer systems, according to testimony in a legal dispute. The case showed that even Mr. Buffett, one of the shrewdest investors in the world, can be hoodwinked.
What looked like a profitable German manufacturer of specialized pipes for the oil and gas industry was, in fact, nearly bankrupt, according to testimony.
As a result, according to the findings of an American arbitration panel, Precision Castparts, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, paid 800 million euros, or $870 million, for a company that was worth only about one-fifth that price.
The acquisition of the company, Wilhelm Schulz, was an expensive misstep for Mr. Buffett’s holding company, which has also been hit hard by the pandemic. Early in May, Berkshire Hathaway reported a loss of almost $50 billion in the first quarter as lockdowns and the economic downturn took a toll on the company’s portfolio of airlines and financial firms.
The case also dents the mythos of the Mittelstand — the midsize manufacturing companies that underpin the German economy. German prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation focusing on eight suspects at Wilhelm Schulz, all of them former high-ranking executives, finance officials or information technology specialists. None have been charged.
The investigation was reported earlier by the Handelsblatt newspaper.
The circumstances that allowed Mr. Buffett’s organization to be tripped up by a little-known German manufacturer were detailed by the arbitration panel that considered a complaint filed by Precision Castparts, which is based in Portland, Ore. The tribunal found that Wilhelm Schulz executives and employees had “engaged in a pervasive scheme” to conceal the company’s dire financial condition so that Precision Castparts would go ahead with the acquisition.
“This is not a close case,” the tribunal found. “The evidence strongly points to fraud, and there is little in the record to suggest otherwise.”
Lawyers representing interests of the sellers, three German holding companies owned primarily by members of the Schulz family, deny wrongdoing and have asked the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to dismiss the arbitrators’ decision.
On the surface, Wilhelm Schulz seemed like the kind of solid industrial company that has made Germany an export powerhouse. Based in Krefeld, north of Düsseldorf in Germany’s industrial heartland, Schulz appeared to have a strong position in its market niche: specialized pipes for the oil and gas industry.
The chief executive, Wolfgang Schulz, was the son of Wilhelm Schulz, who put his name on the company when he founded it only months after the end of World War II. Wolfgang Schulz was well known locally as the owner of a pro ice hockey team, the Krefeld Penguins. Mr. Schulz has denied wrongdoing and vowed to clear his name.
Precision Castparts began thinking about acquiring Wilhelm Schulz after being approached by an intermediary in 2016.
Berkshire Hathaway had acquired Precision Castparts only a few months earlier for $37 billion, Mr. Buffett’s biggest acquisition ever. Though best known for its aircraft parts, Precision Castparts also makes products for oil and gas production, an industry that was suffering even before the pandemic caused fuel prices to plummet.
Wilhelm Schulz seemed like a way for Precision Castparts to increase its presence overseas, and a rare opportunity to buy a German company. Many midsize German manufacturers are owned by families that are loath to sell.
Precision Castparts dispatched employees to Krefeld, where they spent six months poring over Wilhelm Schulz’s financial records. They examined lists of the biggest customers, interviewed Schulz employees and visited Schulz facilities.
But unbeknown to Precision Castparts, Schulz had narrowly avoided bankruptcy only weeks before. The company had been unable to make payments on a €325 million credit line from Commerzbank, according to the arbitrators’ report. A lawyer hired by Schulz had advised the company that it was obligated under German law to file for insolvency.
Schulz avoided that fate only because it persuaded Commerzbank to front it €8 million more, saying it was waiting for payment from a big customer. The bridge loan came with a proviso. If Schulz couldn’t pay, Commerzbank would effectively take control of the company.
Schulz was also raising cash by borrowing against accounts receivable — money that customers owe but have not yet paid — a common practice known as factoring. But some of the documentation that Schulz presented to the lender (and later reviewed by Precision Castparts before the purchase) was fabricated by using Photoshop software to create fake invoices and delivery receipts, the arbitrators found.
How could Precision Castparts’ auditors miss these glaring problems? One incident described in the arbitrators’ report illustrates how Schulz employees made the company look healthier than it was.
In October 2016, as Precision Castparts was going through Schulz’s financial records, a Schulz information technology employee engineered a five-day outage of the computer system used to track sales and orders. A team at Schulz exploited the downtime to fabricate nearly 50 orders, worth tens of millions of euros, that were backdated to make it look as if they had been placed in 2014 and 2015, according to the arbitrators’ report.
Orders were recorded from companies with which Schulz no longer did business, according to testimony. One supposed customer had effectively ceased to exist years earlier.
The deal closed in February 2017, and the news was reported in Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Journal. Handelsblatt trumpeted, “Warren Buffett Strikes Again in Germany.”
The whistle-blower’s email arrived in early March.
The informant, later identified in the arbitrators’ report as someone who worked in information technology at Schulz, wrote that a small team of co-workers was entering fake customer orders into the company’s computer system to “make our company look much better than we really are.”
“I regard this as a criminal act and don’t want to work for a company which uses such methods any longer,” the email said.
Alarmed, Precision Castparts flew in consultants who specialize in accounting fraud, along with its own financial controllers.
After months of digging, one investigator discovered the backdated computer invoices. Another learned from Schulz employees not involved in the fraud that companies that were supposed to be among the firm’s biggest customers were not customers at all. Auditors found emails in which Schulz employees appeared to be discussing how to artificially pump up sales.
In 2018, in an attempt to get some of its money back, Precision Castparts invoked a provision of the sales contract that required disputes to be settled by arbitrators.
In April, a tribunal in New York found that Wolfgang Schulz and his employees had “engaged in a pervasive effort to present a fundamentally misleading picture of the financial condition” of the company. An expert who testified concluded that fake transactions inflated Wilhelm Schulz’s profits by €160 million.
Through a spokesman, Mr. Schulz, 73, declined to respond to the accusations in detail, citing the continuing criminal investigation. Last year, German authorities searched his home. Mr. Schulz said through a spokesman that he “clearly rejects the accusations of fraud.”
His lawyers argue that Wilhelm Schulz was worth the €800 million that Precision Castparts paid for it. Any loss of value was caused by poor management since the acquisition took place, including a decision to fire all the top executives after irregularities were discovered, they say.
Precision Castparts “continues to aggressively use the Schulz brand in the market, even as it demands return of the purchase price,” Schulz Holding said in a statement.
Precision Castparts has prevailed in the legal battle so far. The arbitration tribunal awarded it €643 million in damages — the purchase price minus Wilhelm Schulz’s estimated true value of €157 million.
It’s doubtful whether Precision Castparts will be able to collect the money. The three holding companies that sold their shares in Wilhelm Schulz have declared insolvency. Wolfgang Schulz sold almost all of his stake in the Krefeld Penguins in April for an undisclosed price. Jan-Philipp Hoos, a Düsseldorf lawyer who is serving as bankruptcy administrator of the holding companies, declined to comment.
The financial hit comes at an especially bad time for Precision Castparts. Its main customers, aircraft makers like Boeing as well as oil and gas producers, have been hit hard by the economic effects of the pandemic.
But Wilhelm Schulz does not seem to have shaken Mr. Buffett’s faith in Germany, a country whose engineering he has often praised.
“We view this as a unique situation involving individual circumstances,” David Dugan, a spokesman for Precision Castparts, said in an email. The experience with Wilhelm Schulz, he said, “does not impact our view of German industry.”

Many risks of Feminine Genital Mutilation
Illustration: Feminine genital mutilation
By Ikenna Osuoha (Information Company of Nigeria)
Feminine Genital Mutilation (FGM) entails the partial or whole elimination of the exterior feminine genitalia or different harm to the feminine genital organs for non-medical causes.
It’s categorized by consultants into 4 main sorts, specifically:
Kind 1 is the partial or whole elimination of the glans clitoris (the exterior and visual a part of the clitoris, which is a delicate a part of the feminine genitals), and/or the prepuce/ clitoral hood (the fold of pores and skin surrounding the clitoris).
Kind 2 is the partial or whole elimination of the glans clitoris and the labia minora (the inside folds of the vulva), with or with out elimination of the labia majora (the outer folds of pores and skin of the vulva ).
Kind 3, often known as infibulation, is the narrowing of the vaginal opening by way of the creation of a overlaying seal, the place the seal is fashioned by reducing and repositioning the labia minora, or labia majora, generally by way of stitching, with or with out elimination of the clitoral hood and glans.
Kind 4 consists of all different dangerous procedures to the feminine genitalia for non-medical functions, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scrapping and cauterising the genital.
Societies and communities across the globe apply the various kinds of FGM, claiming it’s a panacea for promiscuity and technique of defending girls’s chastity.
It’s prevalent in about 28 nations in Africa and few scattered communities globally. However its burden is seen in Nigeria, Egypt, Mali, Eritrea, Sudan, Central African Republic and Northern a part of Ghana, the place it has been an previous conventional and cultural apply.
In Nigeria, the 2018 Nigeria and Demographic Well being Survey (NDHS) report reveals that the apply is prevalent within the South-South with 77 per cent, adopted by South East with 68 per cent, South West with 65 per cent, however practiced on a smaller scale within the North.
Nevertheless, it’s recognised internationally as a violation of the precise of women and girls, as consultants conclude that it’s a dangerous apply and has no well being advantages.
International marketing campaign towards it’s celebrated yearly on Might 23 as World Fistula Day to carry to the fore, the various disadvantages and ills of the apply and the way it impacts girls and women, in addition to proffer resolution to treatment the scenario.
The theme of the 2020 version is “Finish Gender Inequality! Finish Well being Inequities! Finish Fistula now!”.
Dr Juliet Ofor, a medical practitioner with Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja mentioned “the act is a mirrored image of deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes excessive type of discrimination towards girls.”
Ofor mentioned it’s carried out on minors, making it a violation of the rights of youngsters.
The apply is a complete violation of an individual’s proper to well being, safety and bodily integrity; the precise to be free from torture and inhuman or degrading remedy, and the precise to life when the process outcomes to dying.
The medical practitioner, who emphasised the necessity for nationwide and worldwide laws towards FGM, mentioned it has no well being advantages however hurt.
He famous that deinfibulation, a surgical process carried out to re-open the vaginal introitus of ladies dwelling with sort III FGM, is usually obligatory for improved well being and well-being, in addition to to permit intercourse or to facilitate childbirth.
She provides that “FGM has no well being advantages, it harms women and girls in some ways. It entails eradicating and damaging wholesome and regular feminine genital tissue, and interferes with the pure features of women’ and ladies’s our bodies.
“The dangers of FGM improve with growing severity, which corresponds to the quantity of tissue broken, though all types of FGM are related to elevated well being threat.”
“It’s clear that prevalence charges progressively decline within the younger age teams and about 37 per cent of circumcised girls don’t want it to proceed.”
Ofor urges authorities in any respect ranges to start large sensitisation and schooling on the ills of FGM, noting, nevertheless, that “states like Ebonyi, Osun and Imo, the place the apply is excessive, have, nevertheless, recorded discount.
“However there may be want for steady schooling of the lots on the dangerous cultural apply. Many stakeholders have persistently referred to as on well being staff to organise programmes on the dangerous results of FGM in rural areas, the place it’s seen as a cultural proper, utilizing native languages and citing examples of the issues.”
Adaku Okadigbo, an Abuja resident who mentioned she was a sufferer of FGM, described the apply as a silent killer.
She mentioned the damaging results of FGM on her are so many to say “and I’ll by no means apply it on my youngsters or encourage any of my relations or buddies to do it on their lady youngsters.”
She added that the apply is simply to dehumanise the victims and never a panacea towards promiscuity “as a result of a promiscuous lady will nonetheless do it it doesn’t matter what you do to her.”
Additionally, Dr Yeti Kunle of College of Port Harcourt Educating Hospital, listed the numerouscomplications of FGM as extreme ache, extreme bleeding (haemorrhage), genital tissue swelling, fever, an infection, urinary issues, wound therapeutic issues, harm to surrounding genital tissue, shock, and even dying.
In response to her, long-term issues can embody urinary issues (painful urination, urinary tract infections, vaginal issues (discharge, itching, bacterial vaginosis and different infections); menstrual issues (painful menstruation, problem in passing menstrual blood), and lots of extra.
Due to this fact, a Lecturer at Angel Crown School of Training, Abuja, Mrs Sylvia Oguamanam, emphasised the necessity for change of conventional and cultural ideology in goal communities.
Oguamanam, who says there may be appreciable assist for the apply in areas the place it’s deeply rooted in native custom and ignorance, famous that conventional rulers have to be concerned as main stakeholders to realize the specified change.

Apple and Google detail bold and ambitious plan to track COVID-19 at scale
Google
In a bold and ambitious collaboration, Apple and Google are growing a smartphone platform that tries to track the unfold of the novel coronavirus at scale and at the identical time protect the privateness of iOS and Android customers who choose in to it.
The cross-platform system will use the proximity capabilities constructed into Bluetooth Low Power transmissions to track the bodily contacts of collaborating cellphone customers. If a consumer later checks optimistic for COVID-19, the illness attributable to the coronavirus, she will select to enter the outcome right into a well being department-approved app. The app will then contact all different collaborating cellphone customers who’ve lately come inside six or so ft of her.
The system, which Google and Apple described right here and right here respectively, applies a technological strategy to what’s often known as contact tracing, or the apply of determining everybody an contaminated particular person has lately been involved with. A lately revealed research by a bunch of Oxford researchers urged that the novel coronavirus is just too infectious for contact tracing to work effectively utilizing conventional strategies. The researchers proposed utilizing smartphones, since they’re almost ubiquitous, don’t depend on defective reminiscences of people that have been contaminated, and can track an almost limitless variety of contacts of different collaborating customers.
Mitigating the worst
However whereas mobile-based contact tracing could also be simpler, it additionally poses a severe menace to particular person privateness, because it opens the door to central databases that track the actions and social interactions of probably hundreds of thousands, and presumably billions, of individuals. The platform Apple and Google are growing makes use of an modern cryptographic scheme that goals to permit the contact tracing to work as scale with out posing a danger to the privateness of those that choose into the system.
Privateness advocates—with at least one notable exception—principally gave the system a certified approval, saying that whereas the scheme eliminated a number of the most instant threats, it could nonetheless be open to abuse.
“To their credit, Apple and Google have announced an approach that appears to mitigate the worst privacy and centralization risks, but there is still room for improvement,” Jennifer Granick, surveillance and cybersecurity counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, wrote in an announcement. “We will remain vigilant moving forward to make sure any contact tracing app remains voluntary and decentralized, and used only for public health purposes and only for the duration of this pandemic.”
Not like conventional contact tracing, the cellphone platform doesn’t accumulate names, areas, or different figuring out data. As a substitute, when two or extra customers opting into the system come into bodily contact, their telephones use BLE to swap nameless identifier beacons. The identifiers—which in technical jargon are often known as rolling proximity identifiers—change roughly each 15 minutes to forestall wi-fi monitoring of a tool.
Because the customers transfer about and come into proximity with others, their telephones proceed to trade these nameless identifiers. Periodically, the customers’ gadgets can even obtain broadcast beacon identifiers of anybody who has examined optimistic for COVID-19 and has been in the identical native area.
Within the occasion somebody stories to the system that she has examined optimistic, her cellphone will contact a central server and add identifiers of all of the customers she has come into contact with during the last 14 days. The server then pushes a notification to the affected customers.
The next two slides assist illustrate at a excessive degree how the system works.
Google
Google
Apple and Google are offering different assurances, together with:
Specific consumer consent required
Doesn’t accumulate personally identifiable data or consumer location knowledge
Listing of individuals you’ve been involved with by no means leaves your cellphone
Individuals who check optimistic should not recognized to different customers, Google or Apple
Will solely be used for contact tracing by public well being authorities for COVID-19 pandemic administration
Doesn’t matter you probably have an Android cellphone or an iPhone—works throughout each
The way it works (in idea)
Jon Callas, a cryptography skilled and senior know-how fellow at the ACLU, instructed me that the scheme is analogous to the best way raffle tickets work, with one occasion getting half of a paper ticket, the opposite occasion getting the opposite half, and—in idea at least—nobody else being the wiser. When two cellphone customers come into bodily proximity, they BLE transmitters trade tickets. Callas stated {that a} related COVID-19 monitoring scheme often known as the Pan-European Privateness-Preserving Proximity Tracing seems to work roughly the identical means.
“I keep a list of all the tickets I have,” he stated. “If Alice tests positive, she releases her tickets and if ones that I have match, I know I had a contact with a positive person.” Callas went on to warning that ambiguities within the circulation of each the Apple-Google platform and the Pan-European Privateness-Preserving Proximity Tracing go away open the potential of abuse as a result of it’s not but clear which events get entry to which tickets.
“If Alice releases the tickets she despatched and those she acquired, she’s outing the individuals who have been close to her,” he stated.
Callas stated he was concerned in growth of a 3rd monitoring scheme often known as PACT, brief for Non-public Automated Contact Tracing. Against this, he stated, it has assurances that events can solely launch despatched tickets.
Begging to differ
Moxie Marlinspike, a hacker and developer who has each damaged superior crypto schemes and constructed them, was among the many most vocal critics of the scheme as laid out. In a twitter thread that analyzed the best way the APIs and cryptography interacted, he raised severe doubts concerning the plan.
“So first obvious caveat is that this is ‘private’ (or at least not worse than BTLE), *until* the moment you test positive,” he wrote in one tweet. “At that point all of your BTLE mac addrs [BLE MAC addresses] over the previous period become linkable. Why do they change to begin with? Because tracking is already a problem.”
So it takes BTLE privateness a ~step again. I do not see why the entire present beacon monitoring tech would not incorporate this into their stacks.
At that time adtech (at minimal) most likely is aware of who you’re, the place you have been, and that you’re covid+.
— Moxie Marlinspike (@moxie) April 10, 2020
Marlinspike, who’s the creator of the Sign encrypted messenger app and the CEO of of the the corporate that stewards it, stated the subsequent weak spot is the quantity of information that may have to be transmitted to consumer telephones:
Second caveat is that it appears probably location knowledge would have to be mixed with what the system framework provides you.
Printed keys are 16 bytes, one for every day. If average numbers of smartphone customers are contaminated in any given week, that is 100s of MBs for all telephones to DL That appears untenable. So to be usable, revealed keys would probably want to be delivered in a extra ‘focused’ means, which most likely means… location knowledge.
That appears untenable. So to be usable, revealed keys would probably want to be delivered in a extra ‘focused’ means, which most likely means… location knowledge.
— Moxie Marlinspike (@moxie) April 10, 2020
One other attainable weak spot: trolls can frequent sure areas and then report a false an infection, main giant numbers of individuals to suppose they could have been uncovered. A variation is relaying BLE IDs collected from a hospital or different focused space.
Technologist and privateness advocate Ashkan Soltani supplied extra privateness critiques in this Twitter thread:
In my view – most of these knowledge are poor proxies for the bottom reality we actually search: precise #COVID19 an infection charges — which may solely be really recognized by widespread testing. If we had testing in place, it might make the necessity to pursue these privacy-invasive methods moot
— ashkan soltani (@ashk4n) April 10, 2020
Soltani supplied different helpful particulars here and here.
Studying the specs
The cryptography behind the nameless and ever-changing identifiers are specified by this specification, which amongst different issues assures that:
The important thing schedule is mounted and outlined by working system parts, stopping purposes from together with static or predictable data that might be used for monitoring.
A consumer’s Rolling Proximity Identifiers can’t be correlated with out having the Day by day Tracing Key. This reduces the chance of privateness loss from promoting them.
A server operator implementing this protocol doesn’t be taught who customers have been in proximity with or customers’ location until it additionally has the unlikely functionality to scan ads from customers who lately reported Analysis Keys.
With out the discharge of the Day by day Tracing Keys, it’s not computationally possible for an attacker to discover a collision on a Rolling Proximity Identifier. This prevents a wide-range of replay and impersonation assaults.
When reporting Analysis Keys, the correlation of Rolling Proximity Identifiers by others is restricted to 24h durations due to using Day by day Tracing Keys. The server should not retain metadata from shoppers importing Analysis Keys after together with them into the aggregated listing of Analysis Keys per day.
A separate Bluetooth specification, in the meantime, requires that:
The Contact Tracing Bluetooth Specification doesn’t require the consumer’s location; any use of location is totally non-obligatory to the schema. In any case, the consumer should present their express consent to ensure that their location to be optionally used.
Rolling Proximity Identifiers change on common each 15 minutes, making it unlikely that consumer location could be tracked through bluetooth over time.
Proximity identifiers obtained from different gadgets are processed completely on system.
Customers resolve whether or not to contribute to contact tracing.
If identified with COVID-19, customers consent to sharing Analysis Keys with the server.
Customers have transparency into their participation involved tracing.
Coming to a cellphone close to you
Apple and Google plan to launch iOS and Android programming interfaces in Could. They are going to be accessible public well being authorities for growing apps operating on one cellular working system to work with apps operating on the opposite. The official apps will then be accessible for obtain in Apple’s App Retailer and Google Play. Ultimately, the businesses plan to introduce tracing performance instantly into the OSes. Presumably, customers can activate the performance with a setting change.
Moreover the privateness dangers, there are different potential flaws. The system may trigger undue alarm if it sends a warning that somebody was uncovered, when actually the opposite occasion was dwelling in the identical condominium constructing however in separate items. Bluetooth can also be inclined to a wide range of flaws that may compromise its reliability and sometimes its safety.
There are lots of vital particulars that aren’t but accessible and are essential to understanding the privateness dangers of the system Apple and Google are constructing. In regular occasions, it could be a given to advise individuals to choose out. Given the worldwide well being disaster offered by the continued pandemic, the decision shall be a lot tougher to make this time round.

The Feel Excellent Morality
http://topicsofnote.com/?p=6284&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr
Televisions, stereos, computer systems, video clip game titles, and mates are usually means by which small children develop their sense of right and improper in a lot of families. Do you assume small children must create their own sense of morality from signifies exterior of their dad and mom? In the hustle and bustle of life, a mum or dad could possibly be a lot more apt to enable his youngster to turn to a person of these mediums for prolonged intervals of time. This does not permit a boy or girl to establish crystal clear expectations of what constitutes suitable and wrong conduct. This also leaves the boy or girl to ascertain suitable and wrong by the social customs to which he is exposed. Have you ever listened to the time period moral relativism? Moral relativism indicates that moral specifications are grounded only in social custom made. Morals are outlined as good functions.
Do you know how you can get a great act to remain very good if the social personalized is hurtful? Don´t stress, I do not know the remedy possibly. The terms moral and relativism are contradictory. The prevailing considered or customized of culture demands to comprise a safeguard to avoid immorality. How will you maintain your behavior in check out if you do not adopt a morality that includes absolute legal rights and wrongs? These days, a lot more and far more youngsters are adopting their parents´ "come to feel fantastic" morality, which usually will cause them to inflict damage toward some others. If extra people declare a conduct an acceptable social personalized, the habits will grow to be morally satisfactory in accordance to a relative moral perspective.
A person's watch on a social tailor made can be affected by audio, television, motion pictures, literature, and societal developments. If these views are not held to a conventional that is absolute in regards to ideal and wrong conduct, the person can get started to get rid of his capacity to see the line concerning excellent and terrible. Have you ever searched for a superior sensation via sex, prescription drugs, substance belongings, or open up expressions of anger or rage? Are your thoughts rational when you believe that you can preserve a balanced marriage even though pursuing only all those points that make you experience superior? What is right or erroneous without obtaining an absolute morality? You may well issue how this absolute common is established. This will be defined and described in a lot more depth in the future chapter.
Susan is a seventeen-year-outdated expanding up in a family that does not instruct morality. Susan and her buddies have classroom discussions with academics and counselors declaring that sexual activity is correct if the two people today are consenting and safe and sound intercourse is practiced. Via the media and discussions with other pupils, Susan concludes that the act of oral intercourse is not considered sexual thanks to this act not involving penetration. Susan seriously enjoys her boyfriend and decides this is a way to continue to be a virgin and show her boyfriend she enjoys him.
Can you relate to Susan or Susan´s mom and dad in this illustration? If you have viewed the news and specific reports on tv, you have been knowledgeable that this instance has transpired between several teenagers. Many boys and ladies think they are trying to keep their virginity by engaging in oral sexual intercourse. They understand the social customized to be that oral sexual intercourse is not intercourse. The place have you listened to this before? This is an a further case in point of moral relativism. The conclusion designed by Susan was not dependent on rational imagined procedures. If Susan recognized that her actions ended up in direct opposition to an absolute moral code that defines acts of really like and intimacy, she would make extra rational options. If her parents created clear behavioral expectations based mostly on precise virtues, she would be confronted with the accountability of generating a choice either to respect her parents´ view on morality or not.
This is not to say that Susan would not have engaged in a sexual partnership. Her preference wanted to be based upon her figuring out that this behavior experienced effects and was not endorsed by her dad and mom or the other units of care in her lifestyle. She and her boyfriend would require to learn what virtues must information their conclusions, and establish conduct expectations based mostly upon these virtues. These anticipations would want to align with their parents´ anticipations in these same regions. Her imagined that oral sex was not sexual intercourse was very easily adopted, considering that she did not have an absolute morality to obstacle this watch. As you see, irrational feelings can be used to justify behavior and stay clear of accountability. The man or woman who thinks in morally relative conditions would experience difficulties recognizing the harm that he would trigger another man or woman.
The abuse that young children endure in their households also contributes to their irrational contemplating. Do you see how the ideas and steps of parents can lead to their children´s adopting the exact same thoughts and actions patterns? Much more than 3 little ones die every single working day as a outcome of little one abuse in the dwelling. In 1998, approximately 1100 children died of abuse and neglect. Most of the children who die are under the age of 5 38 percent of the youngsters are under the age of 1. This is the main lead to of dying for infants and young small children. This features falls, choking on meals, suffocation, drowning, household fires, and motor automobile accidents. Pretty much one-fifty percent of all substantiated circumstances of neglect and abuse in a household are connected with a parent´s alcohol or drug abuse. As pointed out previously, people today with addictions are grounded in irrational thoughts.
Youngsters can act in horrific methods simply because of the irrational thoughts they build from damaging verbal messages, sexual and physical abuse, and moral relativism.
Brendan Smith was sixteen many years old when she killed two individuals and hurt 9. She experienced resolved to shoot a 22-caliber rifle across the street from her household onto the entrance of Grover Cleveland Elementary University in San Diego, California, on January 29, 1979. She talked over how...her violence grew out of an abusive home. She claimed that her father conquer and sexually abused her for yrs. She mentioned, "I had to share my dad´s mattress ´til I was fourteen several years previous." She went on to say that her father purchased her a gun for Christmas when she asked for a radio. Brendan was the primary university rampager.
On September 2, 1996, fourteen-yr-previous Barry Loukaitis broke into algebra course at the Frontier Junior Substantial College in Moses Lake, Washington, with a superior-powered rifle and shot a few students and their trainer. Two of the college students and the teacher died. Pupils recalled that Barry shot just one of the college students with whom he was constantly getting a conflict. Barry's mom suspected that one particular of the tracks that Barry listened to had driven him to commit the criminal offense. The father advised that the family members had a few generations´ well worth of depressive ailments in the loved ones. Barry´s mother explained to the jury that she treated her son as a "confidant" and instructed him every little thing. She went on to say that this provided designs to get rid of herself in front of her ex-partner and his girlfriend on Valentine´s Working day, 1996. He had been an honor pupil at school.
The damage in people is staying broadcast in the media much more and far more. The media is also endorsing acts of abuse. Do you know that there are individuals in academia who endorse pedophilia? In the April 22, 2002, version of US Information & Earth Report, John Leo wrote an post entitled, "Apologists for pedophilia." Larry Constantine, a Massachusetts loved ones therapist and sex e book writer, mentioned that small children "have the appropriate to express by themselves sexually, which signifies they may perhaps or may possibly not have call with folks older than by themselves." Wardell Pomeroy, coauthor of the unique Kinsey stories, stated that incest "can be in some cases effective." Minnesota sociologists included pedophile sex with all those "personal relations that are critical and cherished." There are propedophilia rationalizations however remaining designed currently.
Some of these rationalizations involve the pursuing statements: "Youngsters are sexual beings with the proper to select their associates." "The excellent of associations, not age, establishes the worth of sex." "Most pedophiles are gentle and harmless." "The damage of pedophilia comes mainly from the stunned horror communicated by mother and father, not the sex by itself." A new controversial book known as Hazardous to Minors: The Perils of Guarding Youngsters from Sexual intercourse by writer Judith Levine, includes a foreword by former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders. Just one report claimed that this e book performs down the risks of pedophilia and that Levine thinks this is a excellent time to endorse "some priest-boy sex." The report discussed how the "problem of the mental planet" trickles into the preferred society, including the college system. Tom O´Carrol has been requested to deal with the global sex convention in Paris relating to the personal legal rights of pedophiles and their youngsters associates. His pedophile reserve is on a study course list at Cambridge University. If far more people in culture find this to be satisfactory habits, pedophilia will be a morally appropriate actions. Does this audio like rational imagining to you?
Listed here are examples of irrational thinking patterns:
Perfectionistic thinking - Must statements / ideas: In your relationships, you criticize your self or other persons with phrases these types of as "I must have", "I ought to", "I have to", or "I shouldn´t."
All or nothing at all considering: A tendency to assume in complete black or white. There is no center floor, no home for blunders. Numerous adult males that are survivors of abuse believe in these conditions. They describe feelings in their associations in terms of contentment or anger.
Labeling oneself based on one particular knowledge or interior emotions: The tendency to get a person isolated occasion and make a normal rule from the expertise. "If I do not realize success at the time, I will hardly ever thrive." "If I built a error the moment I will often make a blunder." "I sense horrible, so I have to be awful."
Unfavorable Thinking: The tendency to always focus on the damaging and to omit the beneficial areas of a circumstance. Childhood activities and techniques that problems have been solved in your interactions will identify what kind of lense that you watch the earth. "I can do the job by way of this occasion and gain beneficial encounter", or "There is no hope to make this circumstance superior or to address this trouble." This also leads to you to blow scenarios out of proportion. "My final decision to go on the business journey was the lead to for my wife's dying in an auto accident."
Components that lead to irrational ideas
Psychological Health issues - Panic, phobias, melancholy, panic diseases, temper ailments, imagined problems, hyperactivity, individuality issues.
Trauma - Abuse, witnessing horrific activities, abduction, bullying, and other existence threatening occasions. Acquiring Adverse Messages as a baby - not desired, minimized, not the favored, not very good plenty of (perfectionism), not able to make selections or think critically (codependency).
Household and Societal Norms - 60% of households are single mum or dad, 75% of families have each individual guardian performing, even larger properties, much better everyday living for children.
Ethical Relativism - Morality centered on social customs - "experience-fantastic society", challenges of sexuality, tunes, television, video clip online games, and speedy fixes to difficulties.
Every single of these factors prospects a particular person to seem to self and absent from analyzing how he or she is relating to one more particular person. Self directed action has the opportunity to result in harm to other people in a romance. The delicate damage in associations are what induce the majority of romantic relationship troubles right now, not bodily or sexual abuse. The missing component in lots of relationships is a mindful attempt to incorporate an absolute morality to the marriage that can be evaluated in an goal method. In my partnership e book, I define aim ways to assess damage in a romance together with approaches to heal this harm.

5 takeaways from Roger Stone’s first major day in court
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/5-takeaways-from-roger-stones-first-major-day-in-court/
5 takeaways from Roger Stone’s first major day in court
The longtime Donald Trump associate is facing charges that he lied to congressional investigators trying to untangle the complex web of Russia’s election meddling. Prosecutors say Stone also tampered with a witness in that probe.
For their part, Stone’s attorneys tried to tell the story of a fabulist who walked into the House Intelligence Committee not fully realizing what they wanted to ask him about. If Stone wasn’t forthcoming or overstated his knowledge, they argued, it was not intentional or malicious, and perhaps just for show.
Here are POLITICO’s five takeaways from the first major day of the trial.
Trump takes it hard
If Trump thought he was off the hook after Mueller closed up shop in May, well, Wednesday was a rude awakening.
As the case against Stone kicked off, former Mueller prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky took the baton and seemed to relish the opportunity to weave the president’s name into the prosecution’s narrative on as many occasions as possible.
Less than two minutes into his opening statement, Zelinsky told jurors Trump was a “longtime friend and associate” of Stone.
While prosecutors could’ve portrayed Stone as a freelancer on a lark that might help his ally, Zelinsky instead suggested that Stone was wired to the candidate himself — and at the highest levels of the Trump campaign, “regularly” providing updates on his activities to senior campaign aides Paul Manafort and Steve Bannon.
Zelinsky never quite accused Trump of directing Stone to lie — the prosecutor said he did not know precisely what the two men said to each other in a series of phone calls that summer. But the implication was that Stone lied to Congress on Trump’s behalf.
“Roger Stone lied to the House Intelligence Committee because the truth looked bad for the Trump campaign and the truth looked bad for Donald Trump,” Zelinksky said.
Other aspects of the testimony could also anger Trump. One exhibit introduced near the outset of Stone’s trial Wednesday appeared to be a redacted list of phone calls made from Trump’s home in New York City. The fact that investigators were rummaging through details of the president’s personal phone calls seems like the kind of thing that could get the president tweeting.
The trial will be rated R
Stone is known for his brash style and crass language. So it really shouldn’t be a surprise that his trial is already full of expletives and hissed threats.
The curse words came quickly as the government prosecutors started making their case, quoting extensively from Stone’s text messages and emails.
There was this Aug. 16, 2016, email Stone sent to Bannon about the prospect of more damaging documents released about the Clinton campaign, which Zelinsky read aloud in court: “I have an idea … to save Trump’s ass.”
There was also this Oct. 3, 2016, text message exchange that an FBI agent on the witness stand helped narrate, illustrating Stone’s attempt to calm down Randy Credico, the therapy dog-toting liberal talk show host who thought Stone was using him to advance a false narrative.
“No one is using your name stop being an asshole,” Stone wrote in one message. Later on in the same exchange, Credico replied with a reference to a character from the Godfather movies, calling Hillary Clinton “a scary serious and dangerous person who will kill without conscious the same way Luca Brasi did.”
“Don’t be a pussy- the higher our profile- the safer u will be,” Stone replied.
Jurors also got treated to an f-bomb. That came when Zelinsky read aloud a text message exchange where Stone was offering Credico advice about how to handle a request to speak with Mueller’s prosecutors.
“Tell him to go f— himself,” Stone said of the special counsel.
Later, Stone attorney Bruce Rogow explained to the jurors that while they may indeed be hearing some “odious” language in messages between his client and Credico, it’s just part of their “strange relationship.”
“This is the way these two men talked to one another,” he said.
Stone’s many media hits are all now evidence
Stone was one of the most familiar characters to mainstream journalists, on the lecture circuit and in the far-right mediasphere during the 2016 campaign.
Now some of those conversations and appearances are resurfacing as evidence in his trial.
Prosecutors played several short video clips of Stone to back up their claims that he frequently discussed WikiLeaks and his efforts to learn more about what the activist site had on the Democrats.
Jurors saw Stone at his Aug. 8, 2016, appearance before a local South Florida GOP group where he boasted, “I actually have communicated with Assange. I believe the next tranche of his documents pertain to the Clinton Foundation, but there’s no telling what the October surprise may be.”
They saw Stone speaking eight days later to Infowars host Alex Jones about his “backchannel communications” with Assange and the “political dynamite” that would soon be delivered against Clinton.
And then they saw a clip from Stone’s Aug. 18 interview on C-SPAN where Stone explained he was in touch with WikiLeaks “through an intermediary — someone who is a mutual friend.”
Prosecutors were using Stone’s own words to back up their case that he misled lawmakers a year later when he insisted that his intermediary was Credico. In fact, Stone at that point had actually been communicating about Assange with conspiracy theorist and author Jerome Corsi.
Stone’s defense: It was all a show
When your client is on trial for lying, pronouncing him to be a rather profligate liar is, to say the least, an unconventional approach.
But that’s exactly what Stone’s defense team offered Wednesday as his lawyers argued that their client repeatedly exaggerated his knowledge of the content and timing of forthcoming WikiLeaks releases.
“It’s made-up stuff,” Rogow told jurors. “Mr. Stone said those things. He was playing others.”
Stone also contended that what prosecutors described as threats leveled at Credico were not meant literally but as part of crude banter exchanged by two men hailing from opposite ends of the political spectrum. (Neither side mentioned what may be Stone’s most hostile email to Credico, quoted in Stone’s indictment as: “Prepare to die [expletive.]”)
“It is a strange relationship,” conceded the mild-mannered Rogow, whose beard, bowtie and glasses give him a professorial appearance far from that of his brash client. The defense lawyer said of the messages the pair traded: “They’re profane. They’re rude. … They’re not easy to read, but they’re not evidence of a crime.”
Rogow surprised some courtroom observers by not arguing that forgetfulness or oversight was the cause of Stone’s failure to disclose numerous texts and emails related to his Assange outreach efforts. Instead, the defense attorney insisted that Stone viewed his interview by the House Intelligence Committee as focused on Russia and not WikiLeaks or Assange, despite the fact that Stone was asked directly whether he had any emails or text messages on that topic and said he did not.
“The fact that this was a Russia investigation colored all of his answers,” said Rogow, who also claimed Stone had tried to be forthcoming with Congress. “He goes into this bare naked.”
It’s been widely anticipated that Stone would take the stand in his own defense, but Rogow’s approach Wednesday seemed to leave the door open to the self-described “dirty trickster” not doing so. A defense focused on the announced scope of the House investigation and on Stone’s penchant for provocative boasts might be feasible without testimony from the defendant.
Meet the new Judge Ellis
Close Mueller watchers won’t soon forget U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III, whose gruff manner and blunt orders made for a colorful month as he presided over Manafort’s trial last summer in Alexandria, Va.
Now it’s time to get to know Judge Amy Berman Jackson, a 2011 Obama appointee at the center of the Stone trial.
Jackson is no stranger to the special counsel probe. She’s been the judge on more cases from the Russia investigation than anyone else on the federal bench. She had the initial Mueller case against Manafort and grabbed headlines by ordering his bail revoked after he was charged with witness tampering. (Her Manafort case never went to trial because of a plea deal the Trump campaign chairman cut.)
Jackson also oversaw the cases against Trump campaign vice chairman Rick Gates and Alex van der Zwaan, a Dutch attorney whose30-day jail sentencemade him the first person to go to prison in the Mueller probe. And she spared a D.C. lobbyist, Sam Patten, from serving jail time after he got ensnared on a foreign-lobbying charge related to the Mueller investigation.
So far in the Stone trial, Jackson hasn’t delivered any of the sharp reprimands to counsel that Ellis was known to dish out, though she clearly is on alert for anything she considers problematic. During Tuesday’s jury selection proceedings, Jackson warned those in the courtroom against audible or visible reactions. She said she’d seen some activity of that sort Tuesday, but she didn’t elaborate.
Jackson has also displayed her sense of humor. She warned jurors not to make or read posts about the case on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook “or anything that’s been invented that I haven’t heard of yet.”
Culinary themes often seem to prod judges to humor, or attempts at it. Jackson on Wednesday made her trademark quip about the low-expectations breakfast the court offers jurors.
“We can’t promise you an omelet maker, but we will have fruit. We will have pastries.”

SPAM Digest #3 (Nov 2018)
A quick list of the editors’ current favourite critical essays, post-internet think pieces, and literature reviews that have influenced the way we think about contemporary poetics, technology and storytelling.
Deborah Smith of Tilted Axis Press on translation, at the International Literature Showcase 2017.
Literature from outside of Europe tends to get read more anthropologically than as art, and so we're publishing you things that are surreal or experimental , or that are at least innovative in some way.
Deborah Smith talks here both of translation and the ethos behind the non-profit press she founded, Tilted Axis. One of the points that resonated most with me was her recognition that literature outside of Europe, more often than not, is read anthropologically rather than as art. Is it a fair assumption to say that we, as western readers, would see a work of Thai or Indonesian literature as a doorway to furthering our understanding of that culture, but would be slower to consider the work critically and artistically, even when the style, form and ideas are innovative and experimental? Speaking on behalf of myself, I would say I've been prone to this.
Of course, translated literature, the 'lifeblood of English', as Smith puts it, does offer us an opening into cultures, traditions and ideas different from our own. Yet I found it truly refreshing when purchasing Prabda Yoon's Moving Parts from Tilted Axis to not find myself pondering what this book will teach me about Bangkok Culture. When reviews from authors such as Eley Williams read 'Sleek, supple and soaring – in this extraordinary translation, Prabda Yoon’s stories command your attention', any anthropological curiosities are overtaken by artistic interest.
As Smith points out in this talk, translators act as the literary 'gatekeepers', deciding which works make it across our borders. Traditionally, more unknown and underrepresented writers from countries in Asia haven't had such a platform to share their works in English, with larger publishing companies picking the writers they deem to be worthy of translating. Founded only three years ago, in 2015, Smith's press is the first to publish contemporary fiction in Uzbek and Thai in the United Kingdom. Just with that achievement alone, I think it would be fair to say that Tilted Axis is unique in the platform it is offering to the British public.

‘Emoji Dick and the Eponymous Whale, An Essay in Four Parts’ by Lisa Gitelman on Post45
[This strong recommendation comes with a flashing *very long read* alert]
This is without a doubt the most thorough and exhaustive commentary on the seminal post-iphone experiment that is Emoji Dick - an pictorial novel written by Herman Melville, edited and compiled by Fred Benenson, and translated into emoji by the hundreds of labourers that quietly operate behind Amazon Mechanical Turk . Gitelman’s essay approaches the Melville x Benson enterprise as 'a ludic contact zone between human intelligence and algorithmic processing', and as a beautifully layered example of what falls 'between literature and whatever the fate of the literary may be in an ever more digitally mediated and data-described world'.
What stands out about this essay is that Gitelman chooses to focus on the easily overlooked conditions of textual production involved in such a complex experiment - one that could, perhaps superficially, be considered simply for its conceptual significance. Gitelman draws parallels between the material manufacture of Moby Dick, the 19th-century physical novel, and the genesis of Emoji Dick the kick-started, self-published, on-demand book (do we still get to call it a novel?), as well as the politics behind the different types of labour involved in such different processes (from physical typesetting and letterpress printing, to crowdsourcing, algorithmic mediation and coding).
Questions of pictorial and collaborative translation are also raised, with reference to the west’s early approaches to Chinese and Japanese pictograms, the struggles that go along with the digitisation of the physically printed, the potential shortcomings of pictorial cataloging through linguistic methodologies, and illegibility as an artistic or conceptual statement in today’s literary landscape.
‘My students have observed that half the fun of Emoji Dick is saying it. They like the word dick, yes, but there is pleasure in the whole title. The word emoji, like the word perestroika is an untranslatable. It functions as a "checkpoint," marking a historically specific zone of contact and frisson between languages, the paradoxical crux of incommensurability and pleasurable accommodation. And just as perestroika is a Romanized untranslatable that we can date to the Gorbachev era of the 1980s, emojiis a transliterated untranslatable evolved in and of our networked present. Like other untranslatables, it can be reckoned "as a linguistic form of creative failure with homeopathic uses."’

‘Of Donuts I Have Loved’, by Miranda Dennis, Granta
I’ve been thinking about the value of the empty calorie lately. What it means to say, ‘treat yourself’ and how capitalism confects a version of spiritual nourishment that often comes in greasy wrappers. The damage and beauty in that, a little transient snack for the stressed commuter. To bestow upon your workmates a box full of donuts. Lore of rings and holes, orbital dough and icing halos. The donut’s performative, Sunday innocence. In a series of shorts that detail encounters with donuts, Miranda Dennis sketches a lovely reflection on hunger and care and the need to feel ‘whole’. The way our favourite snack brands offer a pharmakon source of regret and relief, how we find ourselves glitched on sugar’s addictive logic. She depicts a soft phenomenology of the donut. To see yourself sweet, to indulge those rituals that make us feel safe. This is the culinary memoir I want to read: not an oyster in sight, no grumpy men in whites with knives; instead the playful economy of snacks and comfort and female bodies. The acknowledgement of food as more than an expression of style or embodied nutrition. Food as narrative fact, as catalyst for complex affects: the precise oscillations between sadness and joy, the transitional digest of mood within us.

What is the internet? by Ian Sample, The Guardian
Most people, myself included, would think to know the answer to a question as obvious as this. Having been present at the Dark Mycology reading group, run by the Glasgow based Art & Ecology collective, I noted that one guest speaker pointed out how many people never envisage the internet in its physical form, and speak of it as if it really were wholly immaterial.
If someone were to ask me 'what is the internet?', I'd tend to explain it as a network of connections, focusing mostly on its functions/what it makes possible. My answer would probably focus on the immaterial, the web of shared information existing in a hyperspace, seemingly without any grounding in the physical world. Flashes of hyperlinks and search engines would surface before any images of deep sea ethernet cables came to mind. The question of what the internet actually is in its physical form didn't come as wholly new knowledge to me. Nor would I imagine it does for many others. Yet although I was at least partially aware of these elements, there's something quite novel about picturing the internet for what it is in its material form: hundreds of thousands of miles of underwater cables spanning all corners of the globe, connecting hundreds of nations.
To try to visualise the seemingly endless bank of information that flows through cables the width of hosepipes is quite magical when you consider the specifications of such a network: information passing at the speed of light through fibre optic threads the width of a single hair. There's something so painfully delicate about that image when you begin to think how more and more to the elements that allow our lives to function rely on the intactness of those small, underwater tubes. With an ever-growing number of lives now inseparable from online space, matched with a growing dependence on connectivity, it is too interesting to see how even in its physical form, all users are connected. The damage to two marine cables near the Egyptian port of Alexandria, which left many users in India and Pakistan without internet, illustrates how delicate such seemingly secure connections can be.
