nope. idk if i function like that tbh. i have some huge friend crushes tho and want to be closer with some ppl a lot! not mentioning names bc am shy haha

but i want to say that monica @stormyoceans is very important to me these days. she brightens up my days and makes my whole fandom experience so much better by simply being her enthusiastic and authentic self ♥ never change!

and also jessi @oswlld who i still cannot believe is someone i can call my friend and bestie on this site. i am so happy we've gotten to share bad buddy, vice versa, and last twilight together! also happy to hear about your life at times and to just share silly things with you ♥

third one i want to mention is shannen @icouldhyperfixatehim who always manages to stand out in a positive way. we don't interact much but i cannot help but feel very giddy about their presence on my dash. they leave the best tags and every time they reblog any of my edits with their tags, they manage to make me feel like i've made it and my edit was worth the effort :'D so thank you!

Dolls brands I never thought I'd own, part 4: Global PenPals

Meet Amity Anderson!

This doll was a tough cookie to track down. I first stumbled across her last year while searching for a completely different doll on eBay. I thought she was adorable, but priced way too high, so I let someone else have her. When I saw her come up again recently for a lot cheaper, I lost the bidding war. When she popped up unexpectedly a third time, I managed to snap her up right away.

The first time I saw her, I was curious about her origin, since the listing said nothing about the brand, Global PenPals. I figured it was someone's small business, because it's an unfortunate truth that many, many 18 inch doll companies produce beautiful and quality dolls for a few short years and then go out of business. Because she certainly didn't look poorly made or low quality; she obviously had a lot of love put into her production. I could tell she had a really nice wig and a carefully sculpted, realistic face mold. She was meant to be more than just a toy, but a little friend as well. That's what I liked about her. She was special, rare, obscure, and unique. And as much as I love my American Girl dolls, I also love the rare and obscure 18 inch dolls that have fallen into my lap over the years through pure luck. That has turned me into a connoisseur of obscure dolls. The rarer, the better.

So for that reason I couldn't get her off my mind. I became very fixated on finding one. I did a Google search that brought up nothing but the listing for her, plus a few dolls with similar brand names, or sites for finding an actual human pen pal. But I noticed the listing photo included a picture of her box, which had the URL of the brand's website. It was defunct, so I plugged into the Wayback Machine at archive.org to see what I could find.

The site's first snapshot was taken in February 2011. It has a very short intro:

"This site is dedicated to children everywhere. Autumn Woods and Amity Anderson will begin pen pal corresponding with children in other parts of the world. They will learn about different living conditions and diverse cultural traditions. Will they discover that children are the same worldwide? Come along with us and see!"

None of the links on the sidebar were archived by the Wayback machine, so I looked at the next three snapshots, taken in July 2013, January 2014, and December 2014 (the final snapshot).

Now this snapshot displays a lot more content, although once again most of the site didn't get archived. The intro is more or less the same. But now we can see illustrations of the two main characters, Autumn Woods and Amity Anderson.

Clicking through the "Meet and learn more about Autumn" graphic linked to a page that had biographies for both characters.

Autumn Woods introduces herself first. She was born in October, hence her name, but she loves Christmas more. She lives in Kennewick, Washington with her parents and younger sister, and likes her school. She's athletic and loves to do cartwheels. Her best friend Amity lives in Basin City, near the farm where her grandparents live. She doesn't know a whole lot about the world outside of Kennewick, so she's looking forward to making pen pals all around the world.

Amity Anderson introduces herself next. She loves living on a farm in Basin City, and most of the other kids at her school are also from farming families, or live in the area seasonally, which has made her curious about the lives of other children of different background. Her family grows cherries, and sometimes the crops fail due to weather conditions. They also have lots of animals including dogs, cats, and cows. She has a secret hideout in the hay loft.

The next page linked at the top contains all of the pen pal letters to and from Autumn and Amity.

There are 10 pages of these letters. The first letter is dated June 11th of 2011, and the final one is dated August 14th of 2013.

To sum it up, Global PenPals was started by Marcia Elovich in 2010. She had always sewn doll clothes for her granddaughter, and her husband built doll furniture. She used dolls to help schoolchildren learn more about the lives and perspectives of children all over the world. She modeled the dolls' faces on her granddaughter and niece, and hopes to introduce more dolls to the brand.

Marcia specifically wants to thank her mother and father, Bob and Kay Harvey, for providing a childhood almost as colorful as the fictional one of which she writes. They gave to her, her three brothers and many childhood friends their mentoring in an era when the village actually did help raise the children.

I also found Marcia's Pinterest profile. She has pinned exactly four images.

The first two are the illustrations seen on the website. The other two are pictures of the dolls.

This picture's caption:

This confirms that the doll I have is indeed Amity, not Autumn as I had sort of guessed. Amity is illustrated with bangs, but it seems that changed at some point in the doll's design.

I guess that's Autumn on the left? I see no indication on the site or elsewhere that she was ever sold, so it's possible she never made it past the prototype stage.

There's very little else out there about the dolls. A few pictures on Worthpoint with captions stating what I've already put here.

Amity seems to be one of those ultra-rare dolls that only a few collectors know about. After losing out on two other listings, I know that at least two other people do have one and know what Amity is worth. But I have no idea exactly how many dolls were ever produced and sold before the brand disappeared, which probably happened within three years of their debut.

I wonder if their failure may have been due to the price point, $59, which seems very low for a doll with such a nice wig, sleep eyes, a cloth body, a beautifully designed box, and proprietary clothing.

1. why did you choose your url?

i love khaotung. khaotung was obsessed with the capybara song last year before i even knew who he was. capybaras happen to be a very common animal in the region i live. i was very happy they were getting the recognition they deserved. put them together, we have lovely khao + capybaras = khaopybara (i'm also super sure i've seen people here and on tw use this and i just stole it. i'm not creative especially when it comes to usernames).

2. any sideblogs? if you have them name them and why you have them.

i have two other sideblogs. @tuseryoo for all of the gifs i make so i can have all of them in one blog just because, so i feel like i'm not losing track of the things i create (even though i haven't updated that one in a while), and @captain-xandis that some moots might have noticed in their notifications bc i recently created that one to post gifs about critical role, but i always forget to check which blog appears on top of the thingy, so i'm constantly deleting and reblogging things in the right blog these days.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

as of july 3rd, i've been here for 11 years now, so since 2013? which tracks with my super strong k-pop phase tbh.

How to navigate and browse tumblr to find posts from years and years ago: perhaps something useful?

Anywho. This'll be centered around tf2 art. Because of how long the fandom's been chugging along, tf2 art on tumblr dates back to the early 2010s. Talking about this like I'm an archeologist... but yeah. And a lot of these drawings or gifsets or sfm creations are lost to time because of the hunter-gatherer nature of tumblr's reblog system. You can't reblog stuff from a deactivated account, and posts from an account that was last active in 2017, barring the popular posts that circle around for years, are something you have to actively seek out. I'm assuming this knowledge is already pretty common but I figured I'd share how I go about having these big queues of tf2 art posts from 2013 to 2018.

I have used these methods since before I even had a tumblr account, back when I was searching up things like Girls Kissing on pinterest and following the paper trail of links, browsing through reblogs and likes, gambling on whichever blog I clicked on, all to sate my curiosity by burning images into my retinas that no child should have ever seen.

So that's basically the concept- when you stumble onto a post that dates back a handful of years, you scroll through the reblogs (under the "other reblogs" category) until you reach the oldest ones. You then click on the oldest rebloggers url, and from there you can see whether or not you'll want to spend time scrolling through that blog, or if you should move on to the second oldest reblog. And then the third oldest, and so on and so forth.

It's like, a 50/50 gamble on whether or not the blog you'll click on will have what you're looking for, and even then odds are that tf2 wasn't the only thing the blog posted about, so some scrolling will most likely have to be done.

Sometimes blogs have a tagging system for the kinds of posts you're looking for. 3 out of 10 old blogs I go through have "tf2" as a tag, which makes my life really easy. You just click on that tag and scroll through the posts under it.

I usually start off with really popular tf2 art posts from before 2016, and then go through the process of scrolling and browsing the rebloggers' blogs.

It's very much a useless and time consuming thing to do, but I find a sense of joy in seeing how the tf2 mercs have evolved in the eyes of tf2 artists over the years. Also it's like a gambling addiction. The anticipation- it's soooo good. Will I find cool art? Will I find weird niche posts that only have 20 notes? Who knows! "99% of post archeologists quit before they hit it big" type shit

url: the "majestic" part is an inside joke from my friend group when I was like 14. i wish i could just plop down every single one of my followers on here and write a little thing about them. unfortunately i can't, because it'd take forever, so here are a couple of blogs that make me happy.

i love oc's. i especially love oc's that sneak up on you and then it becomes blatantly obvious that they were meant to be the main character of this story. such is the case with @unbearablyindifferent. i don't know a lot about spn other than the three or four episodes i've watched but hayley always explains the things i don't get like salmon dean because i thought it had to do with an actual salmon. or, you know, dean liking salmon. or a salmon ladder like the one in arrow.

@bansithe's ryan is canon to me. truly, ryan was just always there in the background after they got her out of eichen house. i know this is canon. scott mccall told me himself. all jokes aside though, i really truly love this oc. west goes above and beyond and slots ryan into the teen wolf world with love and care.

i feel like that i (tessa) would probably not be able to talk to @khrused's hera because ???? too pretty ???? i would combust on the spot. i do, however, look back to our interaction fondly because hera was so kind and warm and maternal to udyati in a moment that she really needed it and it made me feel really happy as well.

Hi! So, random question, but is your url by chance a reference to the Every Avenue song? I ask because they’re probably considered an old band by this point, and I don’t think many people know them, but they’ve always been so special to me. In fact, in high school (soooooo 2013), I made one of my favorite art pieces to date and it was inspired by Picture Perfect (the song, not the album necessarily, although I do adore that album). I’ve never heard anyone mention them before, but if my favorite Hellcheer author was a fan, that would be like a celebrity I admire knowing a weird obscure book I really like.

And, yes, side note, you’re my favorite Hellcheer author. So few authors write what I consider to be an adequate smut-to-plot ratio (too much plot in relation to the smut, dammit), let alone smut that’s actually good, and yours is fan-fucking-tastic (this is not pressure to update, btw. As far as I’m concerned, longer time between updates means they’re that much sweeter when they come). entitled writers on tumblr: beg for notes 24/7, hold fics hostage and won’t continue until they get a certain amount of notes, complain about the like reblog ratio 24/7

also entitled writers on tumblr: only promote their own work, don’t support other writers and don’t look for other fics, don’t appreciate likes even though those are still notes, don’t update fics regularly, block urls they don’t recognize, block blogs that are too new as though we’re all supposed to have been here since 2013 or something, constantly insults the reader audience, get mad if people tell you they liked it so much they wanna part two, get mad if comments aren’t up to your exact specifications



let me go point by point to prove you’re a fucking idiot.

your entire first paragraph: writing takes a lot of effort, and the ratio has changed over the past few years, largely because of new users that don’t exactly understand how tumblr works. that’s fine, we learn, but listen to people who’ve been on this site for years. we are well within our rights to express disappointment and feel discouraged over low note count, especially when readers demand new work without showing appreciation for what’s there.

“only promote their own work, don’t support others, don’t look for fics” i have never seen a writer do that. i know several writers that have entire separate blogs for fanfic recs. i have one! and if you check the #fic tag on my blog, guess what you’ll see? comment after comment on fics i’ve read. and i don’t even read fic that often, like ppl i’m following definitely read more than i do and my dash is full of them reblogging fic with lengthy comments. i make it a point not to follow writers who don’t support their fellow writers. bc we all understand the struggle.

“don’t appreciate likes even though they’re notes” a like tells me exactly nothing. it tells me you SAW my work. i don’t give two shits about note count. i would take a 40 note fic where 38 of the notes are comments/reblogs over a 10k note fic where 9.8k of the notes are likes. many writers would.

“don’t update fics regularly” again. writing is hard. it takes effort. and we’re all fucking adults with college, jobs, family, illnesses, life in general outside this site. you as a reader are not entitled to scheduled updates, you are not entitled to fic period.

“blocks urls you don’t recognize etc.” blogs that get blocked are often A. ageless/minors or B. completely blank with the default icon + theme. they look like bots. i only block minors on sight, but blogs that block blank/ageless blogs are well in their right to do so.

“constantly insult the reader audience” if you’re insulted by posts encouraging reblogging, take a look at how you interact with fic. the call is coming from inside the house.

your entire last point about comments: demanding more content is not a compliment. if all you say is “when’s part two??” or some variation then you are putting unfair pressure and burden on a writer who delivered you something that took time, effort, and talent. a demand ≠ a comment. writers are happy with a simple keysmash, so i don’t even get your point about “exact specifications.”

to sum. writers owe you jack shit. and if you have neither the capability nor the willingness to write your own fucking fanfic, then you don’t have a voice in this conversation. sorry.

@communist-ojou-sama this blog specifically is 9.5 years old, ive been on here for close to 11. However my likes are used as a way for to me mark if i have reblogged a post or at some point considered reblogging it, whether or not i actually did. its not a good system and i end up liking 30-50% of the posts i seen on my dashboard, but it was much worse before.

in the early days of this blog i used to like every single post on my dash. im not really sure why. it was just something i did because i followed so many fairly active artist blogs that maybe i wanted to show some appreciation to them without directly clogging my own blog.

i have been trying to be much better about that, but as you specifically might know, i like to go through some people's blogs i really like in particular, and just "like" everything in it that i havent read since the last time ive been on their blog. and that leads nicely into -

@loveswirl I do follow a lot yes, but the vast majority, perhaps 80-85%, I followed within the first couple years of this blogs creation. which again, yes, completely and totally unmanageable for its time at its peak in id say like. 2013-2017? its how i acquired internet brain poison during highschool. not the brightest choice for a developing young mind in hindsight.

but since ive maintained this blog for so long, and followed so many blogs that, in truth, had a clock hanging above them, around 60-70% of them have been inactive for literal years. ive gone into my following list once or twice a year and see dozens upon dozens of blogs that have their last update 5 years prior or more.

i used to try and unfollow all of them, but there were URLs or names i used to know, so it hurt to remove them from the record of this blog. ive since stopped trying to unfollow all of them because it felt too tragic. another tragedy ive noticed only in the past year were the blogs that had a last updated status that fell within quarantine. i try not to look in those for their last posts cause a few have been about getting covid.

for the remaining blogs that are actually active and maintained regularly like some of the mutuals ive had since 2014, top out at about 200, maybe pushing 250. while the rest are artists or gimmick blogs i follow that either post once a day, weekly, monthly, yearly, when they remember, etc. and even among those roughly 250 people, theyre all active in different parts of the day or post very little, or like me, run primarily on the queue feature. at any one time im really only seeing at most 20-40 different people that i follow out of the 3449 i actually follow, which is manageable. enough so that i frequently find myself looking at posts i was reading earlier in the day or the prior day.

so its not terrible terrible. its managed chaos. i think.

I’ve been asked a few things about Burgrr.com being back up, which was Slimebeast’s decision and I’m fine with; we created it together years ago, and there’s seemingly still confusion over who did what or whether I’ve given accurate credit for it, so here’s the most thorough timeline I can put together:

In early 2013 I emailed Slimebeast about doing a collab Halloween project, and said I’d like to do something kind of interactive, citing the ARG Dionea House as an example.

He and I exchanged literally hundreds of ideas in one massive email chain, including a text file of pitches I wrote that included expansions on some of his creepypastas and some of my own stuff, but didn’t quite settle on what to collab on. Instead, some concepts went towards the haunted house twine game I would make.

A few months later, he emailed me suggesting we make a website for the alien corporation in my Harmburger short story.

MY CONTRIBUTIONS:

The original short story, which establishes the overall idea.

Designing and illustrating the meat creatures.

Coming up with some of the site writing including the corporate statement, some character bios, I think some menu items and some page titles.

Writing the unlockable story chapters, which have also been archived on creepypasta wiki here.

A couple years later I incorrectly summarized all of this as just like “I approached slimebeast about making an ARG website out of harmburger,” and I only found out last year that he was really hurt by that, both because it downplayed the importance of him picking the setting and “corporate website” angle and because he considers burgrr.com a different project from my collab suggestion. I really just didn’t remember or think of it that way and didn’t mean to twist anything. I don’t know if I still got any facts wrong here, unless he lets me know somehow.
