It frustrates me when people interpret that one moment in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120 as Dick not trusting Cass, because it's so much better and it also just makes more sense contextually when you understand that it's actually Dick not trusting Bruce's judgement.
Tumblr media
(from Robin (1993) #67)
In panels above, which are part of a comic that takes place before Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120, Dick expresses frustration over Bruce suddenly calling them in, disrupting anything they had going on in their lives. Dick specifically at the time was in training at the police academy, and this ended up disrupting that whole situation.
There is also the frustration from him at the idea of being a last resort, instead of a person that Bruce feels he can rely on for help. Dick had offered earlier to help Bruce out in Gotham, but Bruce wanted him gone. It's only now that Bruce has messed up that he realized that he needs help. If he's supposed to be Bruce's equal, a partner, shouldn't Bruce be more comfortable asking for his help?
Tumblr media
(from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120)
The panels above take place, earlier in the issue, before the confrontation between Dick and Bruce. We see that Helena rejects Bruce's orders and Bruce in turn rejects her help entirely. She points out how Dick in contrast, will always come to heel.
Tumblr media
(from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120)
The panel above takes place right after the confrontation with Helena. "[Bruce] can't push her like that and expect her to play along." But can he push Dick like that and expect Dick to play along?
Tumblr media
(from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120)
The panels above show the beginning of the confrontation in question. Dick makes it clear that he's no longer able to trust Bruce as he once did. His faith in Bruce is damaged.
It's also made clear that the doubt is specifically about Bruce rather than about Cass when he says, "Six months ago that would've gotten further than it will now."
Tumblr media
(from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120)
Bruce explains his reasoning thoroughly and yet Dick still doubts Bruce's judgement. Dick doesn't look at Cass, he looks at Bruce when he says, "You're so certain." It's not that he doubts Cass, it's that he doubts Bruce.
Tumblr media
(from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120)
Even when Bruce shares his more personal understanding of Cass's situation in an attempt to appeal to Dick, Dick does not accept it.
Tumblr media
(from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120)
Once Babs expresses her trust in Cass, Dick easily accepts it. The way Dick accepts Babs's approval after a brief explanation contrasts with Dick's rejection of Bruce's more lengthy one. Babs sees Dick far more as an equal than Bruce does, or at least that may be how Dick sees it. This illustrates how it isn't so much the explanation itself, but the person giving it that leads to Dick's acceptance of Cass.
Dick holds resentment for Bruce because Bruce rejected his initial offer to help and then later, Bruce all of a sudden expects Dick to drop everything to come help. And of course Dick does. Dick will always come whenever Bruce asks. but it would have been much easier for both Dick and Bruce if Bruce had just accepted help in the first place.

What do you think of the decision to make Cass not mute anymore? I kind of liked it because it was unique and I think added a lot of cool narrative possibilities, and I kind of want her to be mute again the same way I want Barbara to be Oracle in a wheelchair again
Alright, honestly I've always been in the camp that Cass was never mute to begin with. I think people see Cass not having a lot of experiences using spoken languages as being mute and I don't see it that way at all. She speaks in her first appearance (both her original and New52 versions). The only version of Cass I believe is truly mute is the Young Justice version of Cass and even then they made it due to Shiva cutting out her vocal cords, which is fucked up btw cause they made Shiva be a one note Asian dragon lady type villain and Cass become the "silent Asian trope* that both characters don't deserve (not to mention the white girl is the one that saves Cass and teaches her the meaning of life... she's not allowed to do anything for herself huh?) but whatever.
Now Cass did have major communication and social disabilities due to how she was raised and I do think it provided unique narrative opportunities, but a big reason her original run especially changed that pretty early was because (as the editor Joseph Illidge explained on twitter on her birthday a couple months ago) a couple Asian writers got together with him for lunch to express their worry about Cass being too much of a trope type character due to her silence and language problems. That's why in the OG Batgirl run uses a psychic to give her the ability to speak using her words while taking away her ability to understand body language. It isn't a perfect story, but knowing the reason behind it and frankly allowing it to introduce Shiva which leads to the long game of Batgirl #25 I think it was worth it. Especially since she still had other developmental disabilities such as dyslexia and being heavy neuroatypical/autistic coded (i think only the dyslexia was confirmed on panel, I could be forgetting though)
Now with the current run, yeah Tynion bringing her back he said straight up he didn't want to go the "psychic teaches her to speak route" and was just gonna have her talk from the beginning which imo was fine. I actually think at first he was doing a decent job still showcasing that while she was able to speak her communication and developmental disabilities were still present though maybe not as heavily noticeable as OGCass. Though at the end of his run he presents Babs as teaching her to read and communicate and every writer after has basically stopped showcasing Cass having any real issues communicating, with speaking, and socially which I do think is a real shame. A lot of what makes her unique is gone when you ignore that.
So while I don't think she needs to be *mute* to be interesting, and by the end of her in the Pre52 canon she was experienced enough that her communication skills were fine as she lived in Hong Kong by herself, I do wish writers were more interested in making her unique way of speaking more relevant again. Another reason it's hard for me to think current Cass in Batgirls has the same history as her past self (but that's a different conversation). Though admittedly Cass in Batgirls while the art and coloring for her is terrible, the dialogue writing for her is about as best as we'll probably get unfortunately it's extraordinarily childish.
Hope I answered the question, HA!

You might've answered this already and I just didn't find it, but one thing that always perplexed me about Duke was how old he was in comparison to the other Batkids. It's obvious he's younger than Dick and Babs, and I pretty sure he's younger than Jason and Cass, and older than Damian, but I cannot tell if he's meant to be Tim and Steph's ages, younger, or older. Could you help me?
Youā€™re all kinds of good here, anon!!! I answered a similar ask abt the Order of AdoptionĀ but didnā€™t dive into specific ages on that post BECAUSE well they didnā€™t ask lmaooo but ALSO:
Comic ages are very fluid usually! While Yearsā„¢ļø might pass in the canon proper, or while time seems to slow to a crawl, having a characterā€™s age outright stated is something that occurs very rarely for most characters, if at all!
Because itā€™s always much easier to have a floating age range to work and play around in! Itā€™s easier to keep a character Perpetually 12 or 16 or 25 or mid-40s or- you get the idea. SO, with that in mind. Letā€™s do our Best to Break Down What Age Duke Might Be Currently A N D how it might interact with the Other Batkids!
(Warning for a Very Long Post, lots of issue citations, and a LOT of comics terminology regarding specific runs/events/continunity. Iā€™m gonna try to keep it as clear/concise as possible ofc but plz keep these things in mind! If youā€™re not at least marginally familiar with Bat-Comics, you might find yourself feeling a little lost here!)
So from theĀ Zero Year arc we see a common Trend that plays out pretty consistently with Batfam comics: a Life-Changing Event Occuring while the protag is Youngā„¢ļø.
Tumblr media
(Batman (2011) #30)
With how Duke is drawn in these particular issues, and given the trends of the past, Iā€™d place him in the 8-12 range. The historic precedent being ofc that that is the same range that canon usually places both Bruce and Dick at for their Tragediesā„¢; the more benign reason being that he... just very much Looks to be drawn in that Range. Heā€™s very clearly an Older/Prepubescent child here.
Fast Forward to his Next Appearance in the Endgame arc and-
Tumblr media
(Batman (2011) #37)
Heā€™s definitely older! Heā€™s wiser! And heā€™s giving Batman a fistbump lmao. Again, no strict age given here BUT, since they condensed each Robin to a Year or Two tops with Bruce (its n52 and its fucked up is what it is), we can assume itā€™s been at least 4-5 since Zero Year (which would mean if we go off the age range I proposed for that year, then theoretically he could be anywhere from 12-16 here, and I think that tracks pretty well. Not Perfectly and Certainly Not so well with Pre52 continuity ofc, but Iā€™ll talk about that later!)
In We Are Robin, while its not stated Directly In The Text, it IS given as an Informational Tidbit that Duke is 16 (specifically this can be found at the end of issue #4)! (Sweet sweet canon confirmation FINALLY)
We know that WAR takes place Fairly Soon after Endgame (almost immediately, give or take a month or two given that Dukeā€™s been placed in a few foster homes at this point and has racked up Quite A File) now, again id like to remind yā€™all that while this is a NICE starting point to have, keep in mind that comics are fluid and this may be retconned slightly/ignored in later stories bc Keeping Duke 16-ish is in DCā€™s Best Interest at the moment. (Having Relatable Teen Characters afterall is a Good Marketing strategyā„¢ļø. And the longer they can Keep them Young, the Better)
With that in mind letā€™s take a moment to Highlight the fact that Duke and Damian have crossed paths at this point AND the storylines that have occurred during this year that were meant to be in conjunction with one another!
Because Prior to Endgame, Damian had Died! And just a year (in real, meat-space time) before We Are Robin, he was resurrected and had begun his ā€œYear of Atonementā€ in theĀ Robin: Son of Batman maxiseries. Midway through both this series and WAR (and, we can assume, midway thru this ā€œYearā€ for Damian) the Robin War begins/ends and we see at least one major Moment between these two boys who will soon call one another brothers:
Tumblr media
(Robin War #2)
Given that R:SoB is followed up VERY quickly by Teen Titans Rebirth (in which Damian celebrates his 13th birthday), we can conclude that Damian would be 12 during this time (well, 12 and 1/2 to play it safe lmao). That being said, this Confirms about a 4yr gap between Duke and Damian! (One Batkid down at least! but heā€™s the key to the others so put a pin in him!)
As We Are Robin draws to its conclusion, DC was releasing another arc that would eventually flow into the Rebirth Era, by the end of which, Bruce would approach Duke with an Idea (which involves Bruce becoming Dukes temporary guardian & as he states Many Times ā€œTrying Something Newā€ with Duke).
And thus the Rebirth Era begins, and Duke began his Year of training (most directly encapsulated by the Cursed Wheel arc in the All-Star Batman run:
Tumblr media
(All-Star Batman #1 (back-up story))
Bruce introduces Duke to a training regimen that Alfred has named ā€œthe Cursed Wheelā€. It encompasses all the training Bruce and the other bats have undergone and condenses it down into color-coordinated segments that will take Duke a Year to Complete.
It can be assumed that by the End of this Year Duke will somehow miraculously still be 16, despite, again, an entire ass year passing.
Thereā€™s one story that takes place mid-year in All-Star Batman, and the Cursed Wheel is meant to be capped off by Dukeā€™s first Official Day as the Signal (in the titular Batman & the Signal ofc) BUT, near as I can tell after thisĀ story, Dukes age is not brought up again. So until they DO bring it up either in Batman & the Outsiders or whatever future run Duke becomes involved in, we can assume DC will be working with the idea that heā€™s meant to be in that 16-18 range from here on out (ie still a minor).
But, dear anon, you might be saying ā€œokay, thatā€™s cool, but how does that relate to my question abt how he falls in with the other Bats?ā€ Youā€™ll have to be a little patient with me here, but I think I may have cracked the code!
Keep in mind Iā€™m gonna be addressing both the Post-Crisis to Flashpoint Continuity (ie mid-80s to 2010 in comics history) and the N52-slash-Rebirth Era (2010-Today). Its generally agreed by fandom and DC alike that these points of rebooting &/or Major Events constitute the era ofĀ ā€œModernā€ comics, and that everything from the 80s-on might more or less be canon on some level, even if not All of it is.
(Plus, most of fandom usually likes to borrow elements from both eras and much more rarely from stories before it, SO-)
Lets do a quick rundown of how everyone whoā€™s Closer to Dukeā€™s Age, Relates to each other first, age-wise:
Given that Jason was 15 when he died, in A Lonely Place of Dying its established that Bruce had become increasingly reckless since his death, and by the end of the story, Tim has stepped in to fill Robinā€™s shoes (he states that heā€™s 13 during this story btw). Pretty soon after, Stephanie Brown is introduced & established to be about a year older than Tim (wish I could pin-point a specific issue BUT, i unfortunately havenā€™t read any Tim OR Steph-involved comics that predate No Manā€™s Land... Besides the aforementioned Lonely Place and Young Justice technically, but im working on remedying that soon!)
NOW, during the No Manā€™s Land event, Cassandra is introduced, and pretty soon into her Batgirl run, its revealed that sheā€™s around the same age as Jason (or at least how old he Would Have Been, had he not died.) Now, given that Jay has an August bday and Cass has a January one, fandom sometimes likes to play around with the idea of one being older than the other (OR even speculating/placing them in an AU as twins/siblings, given that Lady Shiva (Cassā€™ mom) was a Possible Candidate to be Jasonā€™s biological mother but thatā€™s a Whole Other Thing i wont get into here.)
The point being, Cass, in this era of comics, IS slightly older than Tim and Steph. At Timā€™s start as Robin, their ages could either line up like: Tim-13, Steph-14, Cass-15 (being a few monthsĀ ā€˜behindā€™ Jay), then Jason at 15/16 (depending on how soon Tim filled the role after Jay died in April) OR Jason-15/16, Cass-16/17 (in this case sheā€™d be a few monthsĀ ā€˜aheadā€™ now instead)
So brief detour to talk New 52, however! Because Tim, Steph & Cass all got switched around from where DC originally left them prior to the reboot! Now I havenā€™t read much of them in this era, other than Batman & Robin: Eternal, so my Understanding of their current ages is Spotty at Best. The general consensus seems to be that while before N52, Stephanie had been attending her first year of College (& doing VERY WELL i might add), with the reboot she was set back a few years alongside Tim to a vague Late-Teen state (so 16-18-ish, instead of a Very Clearly Established 18/19). Cass is probably the worst off for this reboot, given that B&R:E basically constitutes her new origin for the new continuity, and does nothing to confirm her age (all I really know is that sheā€™s a Vague Late-Teen too... Probably? Maybe?), given how much they infantilize her, and subsequently how fandom in turn has taken to infantilizing her too, theres a semi-popular fanon that places her Younger that Tim and Steph. And I, for one, propose that we ignore that bc its Weak Sauce my dudes.
Some fans chose to ignore N52 continuity due to this vagueness, and will stick to the ages established before the N52/Rebirth reboots. But its something to keep in mind regardless bc weā€™re all obviously going to pull from whatā€™s most familiar to us!
But WHERE could we place Duke with regards to them, then? Because them beingĀ ā€œLate Teensā€ is certainly much too vague to work with!
This is Where Damian is the key!
Because Damian is one of those rare exceptions to the Reboot Rule. His story flowed almost seamlessly over from before to after. While he was made a Robin at the age of 10, he continued to grow and learn even after the universe was being rewritten to suit the whims of DC editorial.Ā
If we choose to ignore how everyone elseā€™s ages and origins were swapped around, and stick with the growth that was presented before the reboot, then we can draw some interesting conclusions!
Firstly, though Stephanie also had Died and subsequently Returned, she hadnā€™t lost much, if any time, from the Ordeal. At the start of her Batgirl run, she is enrolled at a Gotham university and making headway with a more firm foot in the Batfamily (even to the point that she and Damian spend a few issues bonding. At this point in time, Damian is definitely 11, and again, Steph can be assumed to be 18/19 during the course of her run. Weā€™ll assume 18 for clarityā€™s sake.)
So, then when Damian is 11, now our line up is as Follows:
Dami - 11, Steph - 18, Tim - 17, Cass 19-21 (the range depending again, if you subscribe to Cass being either older/younger than Jason).
WHICH MEANS, If during Robin War Damian is 12 (and a half) THEN Weā€™ve got an age line-up that Potentially looks Like This:
Dami -12(and 1/2), Duke - 16, Tim - 18, Steph - 19, Cass - 20-22 (And Obvsly Jason, Babs & Dick at their varying Older Ages than everyone here)
and im just now realizing i Didnt include Harper in this line-up, but thats bc sheā€™d also throw a big wrench in all this.Ā  Iā€™d personally throw her in with being Stephā€™s age, but Iā€™m pretty sure she was supposed to be either that, or between Steph and Cass (again, since its N52, i believe Cass was/is assumed to be Younger than Steph, but that contradicts the assumed following of pre52 canon that we have for the above line-up, obvsly, and so we ignore that lmao)Ā
All this to say, however, that canon and fandom is what you make of it, and if you want to wiggle these ages around a little, youā€™re more than allowed! God Knows i usually like to skew the Tim-Steph-Cass age group to be a tad older than this in my own fic writing, and I like to have Duke start as a Robin at 14/15 instead of 16, but thatā€™s just bc I like the dynamic potential it could bring with them being Definitively Older that him, and thus in a more secure place to be Mentoring him right alongside Bruce & the others.
But you might see these age ranges and want to do something Different (say, making Tim, Steph, Cass, & Duke all the Same Age at 17 instead! And that very well tracks with how current comics kinda looks right now!) and youā€™re absolutely valid to do so! Because again, comic characterā€™s ages are meant to be fluid, not fixed!
And at the end of the day, its all about wanting to see these teen heroes kick serious ass haha

Do you ever just...
Wish DC branched out a little more with their heroes and stories? Diversified a bit?Ā  There was a thread going around poking fun at the fact Batman has a plethora of books to choose from. Batman, Batman: The Adventures Continue, Batman and the Outsiders, The Batmanā€™s Grave, Detective Comics... Am I missing any? Not to mention, Batman has major appearances in things like Justice League. FURTHERMORE, while The Batmanā€™s Grave ends in December 2020, a NEW Batman mini (Batman and Catwoman, written by Tom King) will begin as soon as that series ends.Ā  Now letā€™s go one step further still: Batman and Detective Comics are each published twice monthly. If you want to read those series and know whatā€™s going on, thatā€™s $16/month (depending on your LCS). If they were once monthly, like most other series, $16 becomes $8. Sure you can keep that $8, but you could also use it to purchase two other books. In the coming months, many books are getting canned (Teen Titans, Batgirl, Shazam -to name a few), but Batman will still have plenty of titles (except Batman and the Outsiders). But if people had more money to spend on other titles, might they do so? All Iā€™m saying is, if youā€™re a kid with an allowance or an adult on a budget, that $8 can mean a lot in terms of which comics you are picking up.Ā  Ā As we all know, Batman is one of DCā€™s huge money makers. Heck, itā€™s well known (thanks to Tom King) that Batman could have a less than great writer and people will still buy and read that title. Which isĀ wickedĀ unfortunate. It goes without saying that the Batfam is huge: Dick, Jason, Tim, Steph, Cass, Damian, Duke, the list goes on, but only 2 folks on that list have their own titles. Nightwing and Red Hood are each once monthly, and the Nightwing run had a wicked bad time the last couple of years (see ya, Ric). Tim is around plenty in Young Justice (ending in 2 issues), and heā€™s now back to Robin in the Batman titles, but thatā€™s it. Damian was Robin and the leader of the Teen Titans (also ending in 2 issues), while he is arguably the central figure in Teen Titans, he shares that stage with several others. The next series we see him in is Batman Beyond, and thatā€™s wonky where DC continuity is concerned. Everyone else on that list (and anyone I forgot) is just there for support, sometimes it feels they are just there when a writer remembers they exist. Oof.Ā  Sorry for the rant, all Iā€™m saying is DC has so much potential here, beyond Batman (just donā€™t kill off the Batman Beyond title, thanks). Where they are cancelling so many series and Batman, Detective Comics, The Flash, and Justice League are all going down to once monthly come 2021, DC has room to write some new BANGERS. Iā€™ll likely never stop reading Batman, but hear me out...Ā  A series with CONNER Kent, who doesnā€™t love this funky lil mad lad from the 90s? And itā€™s not like he wouldnā€™t come with a fun supporting cast. Heck, if youā€™re reading Action Comics right now he is the one running around with Clark, Jon, Kara, and Brainiac 5! If the other members of the Super Fam arenā€™t to your liking, Conner is a breath of fresh air. And who doesnā€™t love a little edge? Damain. Okay, I get that he is from the Batfam, but heā€™s gone off the rails and DC has some room to give us a wild story all about what he decides to do next! Instead of there being talk of some sweet solo Damian run.... All we know is that he will be showing up again sometime in or around Detective Comics 1028. smh DC. Or even a story that showed us how he ended up back with the League in Batman Beyond. Two potential titles right there!Ā  LADIES. DC HAS SO MANY GOOD WOMEN. Yes, we have Wonder Woman, Batgirl (ending soon), Amethyst (is that still running?), and probably something else Iā€™m forgetting... But give us a story all about some of the other women of DC. Starfire has a rad as hell origin, and her personality would make for a great story. Maybe they could give her some more clothes, though. If they wanted to keep it Batman related, they could do a solo series with Cass. Just a thought. I get that these are more niche characters, but theyā€™re also something different from what/who DC has been using.Ā  Okay, anyway, that concludes my rant. Iā€™m going to stop myself because this is already a wall of text and I didnā€™t even use pictures.Ā Ā

off the rack #1316
Monday, March 8, 2021
Ā Coming up on a year since the pandemic started. I hope you're all healthy and safe. I am hopeful that vaccines will be deployed widely and help us all feel less anxious. I am fortunate enough to be one of those people who is happy as a bug snug in a rug while self isolating. I do really miss my dear friends and family but hugs can wait until we're all vaccinated.
Ā My thanks to Doug for lending me these comic books to read.
Ā Batman Annual #5 - James Tynion IV (writer) James Stokoe (art) Clayton Cowles (letters). It's the origin of Clownhunter and it's not very original. If I had to pay $4.99 US I would have passed on this and lived with leaving a hole in my Batman collection. If you're not familiar with this new vigilante, he's an Asian teenager named Bao who decides he's going to kill the Joker and all of the villain's sycophants. The reason he becomes Clownhunter (and killer) is very mundane. I wish they could have come up with a new motivator. Maybe the philosophical discussion about what to do about the Joker might interest some fans but I found this story quite tedious. I also didn't like the way Bao and his parents were portrayed. Did they really have an Asian saying "Ah, so"? Yes they did on page 8. Shades of Charlie Chan, Batman. I was not offended, just disappointed.
Ā Batman/Catwoman #3 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I was thrilled to see the town of Port Orange, Florida mentioned on the first page. My pal Al lives there. It's also where Selina finally catches up with the Joker and does what Batman never did. I love this Black Label book taking familiar characters and treating them in a new and interesting way. Here's a future where Selina has survived her husband Bruce's death and their daughter Helena is the new Batwoman. Now I wait to see how mother and daughter deal with the Angel of Death.
Ā And now, more Future State books.
Ā Future State: Robin Eternal #2 - Meghan Fitzmartin (writer) Eddy Barrows (pencils) Eber Ferreira (inks) Adriano Lucas (colours) Pat Brosseau (letters). The consequence of Tim Drake/Robin being dunked in Lazarus resin is that now he's immortal. Whoop-dee-doo. Not only is this a boring Robin beats up bad guys issue but the art lacked any logical perspective. This issue takes place on a train but you would think it's in a huge building based on the art. I know it's comic books but I hate when one doesn't make visual sense. I think that's just laziness.
Ā Future State: Kara Zor-El Superwoman #1 & #2 - Marguerite Bennett (writer) Marguerite Sauvage (art) Wes Abbott (letters). This 2-issue fairy tale was not meant for old farts like me and Doug. With it's soft pastel colours these books should have included glitter and bubblegum flavoured lip gloss. Maybe young tween girls will like this. The moral of this story is "no one is born wise".
Ā Future State: Dark Detective #3 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Dan Mora (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Aditya Bidikar (letters). There are not one but two Batmans in this issue. You've got Bruce in his new capeless costume but here he's wearing a trench coat to give that fluttering effect, and then there's the new guy in the Bat suit, cape and all. The "uh-oh" point of the story hits here when the bad guys discover where Bruce is hiding out. The Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Carmine Di Giandomenico (art) Antonio Fabela (colours) & AndWorld Design (letters) Grifter story concludes here too with a double cross and a whole lot more of Helena/Huntress. This is my favourite Future State book so far.
Ā Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1 & #2 - Sean Lewis (writer) John Timms (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). If you're wondering how a grown up Jonathan Kent takes over for his dad as Metropolis's protector then these two $5.99 US books will satisfy your curiosity. The villain of the story is an evolved Brainiac who is a big multi-mouthed ball now. Metropolis is shrunk ala the bottle city of Kandor, the citizens go nuts but Jon returns things back to normal in the end with the help of Kara/Supergirl. I don't know why Kara's a girl in this story and a woman elsewhere. Each issue has two back-ups so you get your money's worth. One features Mister Miracle and the other the Guardian. They are both dealing with bad things inside the bottled Metropolis. You won't miss much if you don't read them. The Mister Miracle story "The Metropolis Menagerie" is done my Brandon Easton (writer) Valentine De Landro (art) Marissa Louise (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). The Guardian story is brought to you by Sean Lewis (writer) Cully Hamner & Michael Avon Oeming (art) Laura Martin (colours) AndWorld Design (letters). This one got me excited because a villain wants to throw Jimmy Olsen off of the Daily Planet building.
Ā Future State: Catwoman #2 - Ram V (writer) Otto Schmidt (art) Tom Napolitano (letters). Read this to find out if Catwoman saves the lives of the people on the train. You will also find out if Bruce is freed from the bad guys. Talia Al-Ghul appearing is the deus ex machina in this story. I like the new Cheshire and Onomatopoeia is always fun.
Ā Future State: Superman: Worlds of War #2 - Phillip Kennedy Johnson (writer) Mikel Janin (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) & Dave Sharpe (letters). In "The Many Deaths of Superman" the Man of Steel fights in the arena of Warworld where Mongul resurrects him after every death match. It's the typical brutal battle scenes and super villain gloating. What's more compelling is an old newspaper story that Clark Kent wrote that inspired a young woman who travels to Smallville. I was totally confused by the three back-up stories featuring Mister Miracle, Midnighter and the Black Racer because they were not very good. I am a completist and have to finish what I start. I could have stopped reading after the $3.99 US main story in this bloated $7.99 US comic book Ā but my obsessive compulsive nature wouldn't let me. It's a character flaw I wish I could change.
Ā Future State: The Next Batman #1 - John Ridley (writer) Nick Derington (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). All the teasers for this book hyped the fact that this Batman is black. You won't get the secret identity in this first issue but there are a bunch of likely candidates. Lucas Fox is a possibility but it's confusing because he's a bad guy in another Future State book. This is another $7.99 US book with back-ups. These are more coherent than the ones in Future State: Superman: Worlds of War.
Future State: Outsiders by Brandon Thomas (writer) Sumit Kumar (pencils) Sumit Kumar & Raul Fernandez (inks) Jordie Bellaire (colours) & Steve Wands (letters) gathers together some old Batman associates helping Gotham City citizens escape persecution by the Magistrates outside Gotham City's borders. Get it? It was nice seeing Katana in action.
Future State: Arkham Knights by Paul Jenkins (writer) Jack Herbert (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) & Rob Leigh (letters) gathers together some of Batman's rogues gallery to fight the oppressive Magistrate. Two-Face, Mr. Zsasz, Dr. Phosphorus, Killer Croc and other ex-inmates of Arkham Asylum are being lead by an armoured Astrid Arkham. It's super villains being super heroes.
Ā Future State: The Next Batman #2 - John Ridley (writer) Nick Derington (breakdowns) Laura Braga (art) Arif Prianto (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). We learn the secret identity of the new caped Batman in this issue. It's Lucas Fox's brother. He has a brother? This also has three new back-up stories.
"Batgirls" is by Vita Ayala (writer) Aneke (art) Trish Mulvihill (colours) & Becca Carey (letters). Batgirl/Orphan Cassandra Cain gets locked up in the Magistrate Detention Facility where both good guys/white hats and bad guys/black coats are incarcerated. She got caught on purpose because her mission is to find Oracle and Batman and free them. She gets help from Spoiler who is queen of the inmates. In this reality Cass is way more articulate than she used to be. I didn't like that. I also didn't like that in the other Future State stories the Magistrate foot soldiers have a shoot to kill order for any masks that they encounter. Why are all of these masks alive? Anyways, this part ends with the white hats and black coats forming an alliance so Cass can get on with her mission.
"Gotham City Sirens: Ladies' Night Out" is by Paula Sevenbergen (writer) Rob Haynes (breakdowns) Emanuela Lupacchino (pencils) Wade von Grawbadger (inks) John Kalisz (colours) Becca Carey (letters). Catwoman and Poison Ivy spring a domestic droid named Dee Dee (get it?) from servitude and they have a night on the town at a bar. The bar is run by Sam Bradley and both super heroes and villains can imbibe in peace. Fans of Sex and the City may like this. Not a lot of drama until the last page when the joint is raided by Magistrate goons and major characters are shot.
Ā Future State: The Next Batman #3 - John Ridley (writer) Nick Derington (breakdowns) Laura Braga (art) Arif Prianto (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). This is the "uh-oh" moment in the story where the hero is felled by the villain. A wounded Batman is attacked by the murderer he's trying to bring to justice. I saw that coming.
I like the change with Black Lightning in the Outsiders back-up.
I like the art in the Arkham Knights back-up even though the dialogue is eye roll inducing.
Ā Future State: The Next Batman #4 - Jace/Batman lives, as if that was in any doubt. This story would have been a lot more interesting if Bruce/Batman was really dead. Even if the Future State line of comics dies out this Next Batman is a cop out. The Batgirls story ends with Cassandra/Orphan saving Barbara/Oracle and the Resistance gaining ground on the Magistrates. The Gotham City Sirens story ends with Catwoman and Poison Ivy helping the Resistance get an advantage in their war with the Cybers thanks to Dee Dee.
Ā I admit that I was sucked in by the hype for this mini. The Next Batman being black intrigued me. The story itself was meh and I would not have missed anything by not reading it. I was not engaged as a mature reader but I think someone in their teens might like all the stories in these four issues.

hi! did bruce ever come to accept that cass DID kill a man or is this something he's still in denial of?
Oh boy, so this is a favorite subject of mine and especially now that we have two continuities to provide comparison for, Iā€™m going to wig out a bit and go for a full deep dive here. My apologies, one and all.
Discussions of murder, child abuse, and suicide under the cut.
New Earth | Pre-Flashpoint Continuity
The simple answer to this is that Bruce learned the truth but rejected the truth and for as far as we were ever given evidence for in all of Batgirl (2000-2006) and all comics after that ā€“ minus the OOCĀ ā€œEvil Cassā€ Saga that everyone agrees to ignore ā€“ he basically rejects it without fail.Ā
Now, one would say that Bruce Wayne objecting to hard evidence on anything is out of character and theyā€™d be right. And, in fact, for Bruceā€™s subplot throughout Batgirl (2000-2006) that dichotomy actually proved to be one of the leading problems.Ā
Even when David Cain gives Bruce video evidence of the murder Cass committed as an eight year old child, he is heartbroken but also refuses to accept it no matter how much the evidence stacks up.
Tumblr media
[Batgirl (2000-2006) #4]
But, of course, the more he analyzes the tape, the more he looks for signs of tampering or editing, the less he finds, and the more angry he gets at himself for not being able to somehow change the reality of what is happening.
Tumblr media
[Batgirl (2000-2006) #4]
This isnā€™t a new thing for Bruceā€™s characterization in this era. Earlier that same year in the premiere issue of Batman: Gotham Knights (2000-2006), hisĀ ā€œblind spotsā€ were actually the main crux of the issue, as all the evidence pointed toward the son of the two victims being the one who committed the heinous murder, and he spent valuable time and effort, as well as everyone elseā€™s time and effort, trying to find any evidence at all that would prove the truth wrong. To the point that Dick was trying pretty desperately to take the case from Bruce so it wouldnā€™t bother him so much.Ā
But even with that case, as as much as it affected Bruce, he ultimately conceded to the evidence.Ā
Cassandra, though, is personal. And throughout her Batgirl run, Bruce again and again makes comparisons between the two of them. Bruce almost uncharacteristically opens himself up to Cass soon after beginning to work with her. She had beĀ ā€œvettedā€ by Barbara, easily Bruceā€™s most trusted ally at the time, had proved herself by saving Bruceā€™s best friend Jim Gordon, and provided assistance at their darkest hour during the No Manā€™s Land crisis. But more than any of that, Cassandra was the first person in Bruceā€™s life who seemed to carry his blind allegiance to theĀ ā€œNo Killā€ rule that he had.Ā
And just when Bruce was most confronted with the facts, when he had heard from Cain himself that Cass had blood on her hands, Cassandra proved herself in an act that even Bruce himself would have had difficulty doing as selflessly and heroically as Cass did. She races into gunfire, not dodging a single shot in order to keep a criminal behind her from being taken out by friendly fire.Ā
And in the process, has a quiet moment that once again shows just how incredibly similar she and Bruce are in their attitudes and mannerisms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Batgirl (2000-2006) #6]
And when Bruce asks her about it later, she gives him an answer that seems to help him draw the wool over his eyes all the more, because she couldnā€™t be so instinctively protective of life like he is if she had ever taken life herself.
Tumblr media
[Batgirl (2000-2006) #6]
If Cassandra, who embodies his philosophies and beliefs so much could kill, then that meant that Bruce could kill, and this was at a dark time in Bruceā€™s life where that very question was something that could have been the end of him, even the suspicion of murder ā€“ such as in Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive ā€“ would tear down everything he believed at its foundation.
But of course, all of this was still a willful delusion on Bruceā€™s part. Cassandra had killed. Cassandraā€™s guilt and death wish was because of her past. And just because Bruce came up with any excuse possible to ignore these facts didnā€™t mean that it wasnā€™t plain to see for everyone else.Ā
And thus the main conflict for Bruce in Batgirl (2000-2006) wasnā€™t really portrayed as him discovering the truth about Cassā€™ past ā€“ he had the evidence for it since the third issue ā€“ it was about how his inability to accept it, because of his inability to forgive that fault, fed into Cassandraā€™s death wish as much as her personal guilt.Ā
Bruce couldnā€™t accept the reality of Cass having been used and manipulated to do something so heinously wrong when she was a child, because he couldnā€™t accept the flaw of his own morality that (at this time in his life) he would not be able to find it in himself to forgive someone he loved and admired so much as a part of his family. His very staunch black-and-white worldview was shaped in a way that it made it simpler for him to put criminals away and to see willing killers as deserving of punishment without nuance was at odds with the girl he had adopted as his own who very much was born as evidence of the worldā€™s shades of gray.
But Bruce wasnā€™t Cassā€™ only parental figure. In fact, Barbara Gordon was a far bigger influence at this time and Babs was someone with a far more nuanced outlook. And also someone who believed not only that Cass had been haunted by this crime, but was someone who wanted Cass to learn how to forgive herself for something that wasnā€™t ultimately her fault. Barbara knew that Cass needed to see from her mentors that she could be forgiven before she could really forgive herself, and as long as Bruce wasnā€™t budging, she was going to continue on her path of self destruction. This frightened and angered Barbara because she couldnā€™t force Bruce to believe and forgive, even as the time of the death-by-Shiva was approaching.Ā
Without getting too much into it, Iā€™ll just say that this sentiment is very similar to the helplessness one feels with being familiar with the signs of someone becoming increasingly suicidal, but incapable of pressing others in the loved onesā€™ life to open their eyes and see the danger for themselves ā€“ to accept that there is a problem so that they can then begin to help heal and fix and forgive for it.
This comes to a head in Batgirl (2000-2006) #23 when Barbara tries one last time to wake Bruce up to the reality of it while Cass prepares for her final fight.

[Batgirl (2000-2006) #23]
Honestly, #23 is probably one of the most underrated issues of the entire series andā€¦ while the subject material is dark itā€™s vital to really understanding what the first third of the run was even about.Ā
Thereā€™s an element of Bruceā€™s denial that is a bit self serving. He doesnā€™t want to see whatā€™s wrong with Cassā€™ behavior or her suicidal behavior ā€“ her death wish ā€“ because it requires him to defend a fundamental flaw of his own philosophies and beliefs. It requires him to really confront how heā€™s capable of forgiving criminals who have more identifiable motives and, often, mental illness, but is much stricter and less forgiving of the people he loves most and has the highest expectations of. Usually people whose mental illness and trauma arenā€™t as easily identified.Ā
It confronts the mindset of valuing any belief system over the circumstances of reality. And Bruce, until he goes through this himself and forgives himself in Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive canā€™t begin to accept what it would mean for Cassandra.Ā
But, for reasons that many can fannishly extrapolate on, Barbara can. and itā€™s fortunate that she can because Cass surviving, Cass being reborn after what is for all intents and purposes a failed suicide attempt, it was Barbara who let her know that her life was still valuable, that her sins and burdens were not beyond forgiveness or made her undeserving of love. That no fault would make Barbara love her less.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Batgirl (2000-2006) #25]
Cassā€™ victory in this moment is actually also Barbaraā€™s love as a parent winning as well. Because sometimes putting aside long held beliefs and traversing into new territory to adapt to the grayness of reality is the only real way to be moral in life.
And itā€™s because Babs showed Cass the way that Cass is able to finally accept herself and see outside herself enough to recognize that same tendency, that same crushing death wish in her opponent as well and ultimately give Shiva the gift of living past a death wish as well.
Tumblr media
[Batgirl (2000-2006) #25]
This is just an amazing powerful moment and for obvious reasons can effect many people very differently. This tone, this strangely optimistic story about conquering the shadow of death after it haunts you for all of your life, was one of the most important comics I personally had ever read. And because of that it means a lot to me. I like that there were so many layers to Cassā€™ feelings, to the reactions of the people around her, and how sometimes those people around her failed her without ever even realizing it.Ā
And in a way, Bruce did fail Cass in this respect. And itā€™s because of that that I think a lot of people donā€™t come away from Batgirl feeling it lines up well with any Batman they know. In a sense, yeah, it feels pretty damning for him to have never accepted the danger Cass was putting herself in, to never fully accept it as something he could change or even that he could contribute to.Ā
But thatā€™s a sad reality. And in 2003? It would have been all too easy for a parent to write off suicidal teenagers as something that was completely outside of their control, and as much as that angers me today in hindsight, I canā€™t say that such mistakes would ever singularly make someone a completely terrible person.Ā
We never get evidence that Bruce accepted the truth later in the series or beyond. And I do think thatā€™s a dangling plot thread that works against the overallĀ ā€œscoreā€ of Cassā€™ Batgirl series as there were quite a few plots that were left aside unceremoniously. But I can also argue that it was something that was left behind because they didnā€™t think it held any narrative purpose after presenting theĀ ā€œwrongā€ way someone handles other peopleā€™s suicidal feelings. Batgirl is Cassā€™ story, and Bruce being able to accept the truth for himself once Cass moved past it could have been part of her story, too, but it was still mostly a Bruce story. And it was never brought up in his own series again.
Not to say that Bruce didnā€™tā€¦. evolve on those thoughts over the years anyway. Just. Not in regards to Cass. Just in regards to Damian and David andā€¦. Selina in hindsight. Comics are weird, and this drop off of this narrative point also marked a lot of change up in Editorial and Writing for the Bat Books that would take us down a path to War Games so saying that we werenā€™t going to be getting much nuance on the subject is putting it lightly.
Prime Earth | DC Rebirth Continuity
Cass is a really different character based purely on her origins alone in this because a fundamental change was made that... kind of took a lot of power out of Cassā€™ original death wish by someā€™s measure, and moved us beyond years of idealizing a teenagerā€™s depression and mental illness in others. It will really depend on what side of the fence you land on for how you feel about either.
Cassandraā€™s murder was not a nameless mobster here but instead one of her best friendā€™s mothers, Miranda Row. She also has a mission before she joins the Batfamily of her own volition, one specifically handed to her by Bruce who knows she was Miranda Rowā€™s murderer from the start.Ā
Bruceā€™s acceptance of Cassā€™ past sin is actually the main crux of their relationship in this version and isnā€™t at all independent of the very real fact that Cass hasnā€™t been given a mother figure in all of this, there is no Barbara who will play opposite to Bruceā€™s approaches to Cassā€™ struggles and past. Therefore the narrative doesnā€™t have the freedom to explore how different approaches to raising a child with these conditions, especially an adopted child, and so Bruce has to be good and accepting of Cass or else the narrative is just needlessly mistreating someone without giving them any relief or help. To avoid that, both Bruce and Cass have a lot of those layers removed and the story is streamlined.Ā
Bruce isnā€™t only accepting of Cassā€™ past, he is actively encouraging her to move past it and maybe even give up vigilantism and violence as a way to reclaim herself.
....
While simultaneously reminding her that Miranda Row will never come back? But at least Harper forgave her?Ā
.... Batman and Robin Eternal was a mess.
Tumblr media
[Batman and Robin Eternal (2015-2016) #26]
You can sort of see the editors and writers desperate to sidestep subjects they donā€™t want to deal with but also wanting complexities and so... never... really threading that needle.
But since Bruce never really ignores or avoids her past and her faults, that need for Cass to internalize her guilt and to exile herself from the basic joys of life doesnā€™t really exist either. If he accepts her openly and acknowledges her past, Cass knows that her idol will love her despite her flaws without a blanketed, irrefutable moment like we got between Cass and Barbara in Batgirl (2000-2006) #25.
Un...less we randomly have it anyway?
So. Starting with the relaunch of Detective Comics in Rebirth, we have the mandatory team-gathering issue where Bruce gives his analysis of all the recruits one by one and it includes a moment about Cass over the backdrop of her saving children from a human trafficking ring -- this is notable only because that seems to be the only thing Tynion ever has Cass doing on her own, busting up these rings, but itā€™s also never commented on and weā€™re never told how she tracks these down and whether itā€™s something she dedicates herself to as it has something to do with her past under Mother and that child trafficking. Tynion likes to... not get too far into the subjects he brings up. Which is again a bit at odds with how the old Cass went.
And in this overview Bruce is giving Kate about Cass he.... remarks that sheā€™s the most dangerous fighter he knows which. Seems to go back on his previous reactions to her where it was all about how he believed in her and saw past her one sin and knew how good she was, enough so he trusted her to run interference while he... self-amnesiaed himself for the majority of BaRE.Ā
Tumblr media
[Detective Comics (2016-present) #934]
This also leads to some questionable choices on how they present Cassā€™ internal struggles. Because sheā€™s been forgiven, she isnā€™t isolating herself willingly or unwillingly anymore, and sheā€™s already confronted the murder she committed and received resounding forgiveness from Harper (and notably no one writing cares about Cullenā€™s feelings on the matter hmmm) who regularly pals around with her now like nothing happened.Ā
So itā€™s confusing when the only arc which has centered around Cass so far tells us that sheā€™s... drowning in guilt and that sheā€™s desperate to figure out why Batman believes in her. Even though... we know as readers that he.... doesnā€™t necessarily believe in her all that much.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Detective Comics (2016-present) #950]
I should note that none of this is really resolved by the end of this particular arc. she just. Learns that she doesnā€™t have to fight alone because she has the family behind her and she gives her declaration to Shiva thatĀ ā€œI am not less, I am MORE.ā€ so. What Iā€™m saying here is thereā€™s some confusion and a lack of cohesion in what they want to do with Cass here.
Theyā€™re not comfortable with tackling a teenage girlā€™s suicidal tendencies and, really, thatā€™s more than understandable. I wouldnā€™t want any writer to tackle a subject that important without having a full vision and lots of comfort in doing so. Even the original take with Cass, which benefited from having different circumstances and an editorial team that allowed for Cass to have two mentors to balance things out with, was far from perfect and Bruceā€™s part in the relationship is a key example of that.Ā
In New Earth, Bruce never had to fully confront how he was wrong in his approach with Cass, or the fact that it almost cost his adopted daughter her life. Somewhat ironically, Batgirl (2000-2006) was often limited by its failure to sum up the points of its more complicated perspective and storytelling into exact words. The lessons could be missed.Ā
But in Prime Earth, we have the broad outlines of a relationship dynamic that doesnā€™t really match up with the text it keeps providing us with, or how they strive for that perilous tone that was known in Cassā€™ original series, without wanting to dive into the greater themes and struggles. This is a limitation of wanting to hit those notes without focusing hardly any published page time on Cass and her story. These things will only become more and more noticeable as time goes on and weā€™re continuously sold this idea of growth and relationships without Tynionā€™s team actually dedicating the time to them.Ā
So, thatā€™s my summation of the whole thing! Sorry for going a little extra on it lol I appreciated the question a lot.

Fanfic retrospective 2018
I have seen 2 people doing this and I thought, oh, why not?! So lets revisit all the fics submitted last year!
Online Hero Need Friends:
Summary: Izuku makes some online friends when he's in middleschool that he keeps when he becomes a pro hero. But he never told them he's The Deku.
Thoughts: This fic was kind of unexpected for me! In a lot of ways. I got inspiration for the idea from a post of Tumblr, but wasn't really going to do anything with it, and one night, suddenly, I just started to write it! I finished the first chapter around 3am on a work day and the response wasā€¦ Unexpectedly amazing? I remember watching at my phone just seeing the numbers growing and growing, so many people just loved it!!! So I decided hey fuck it let's make it have multiple chapters so, I sort of did that. All chapters were written on moments between classes and it's amazing so many people liked this because it's mostly just a self indulgent piece of fluff with some ocs hanging out, a friend described it as ā€œA long ass fic where nothing happensā€ (Which is super accurate) but I enjoyed making it and I loved creating the characters!!! I'm gonna finish it sometime in 2019. Sorry for everyone who's been waiting for the epilogue, but I promise this isn't abandoned!!!!
This is my most successful fic to the date which is honestly fucking weird. I'm serious guys, this is a story where NOTHING happens, just fluff with no substance and not even with characters you already know beforehand!! The hell is wrong with you?!
I don't believe you. You aren't like THAT:
Summary: Dick tells Damian he's gay. His brother doesn't take it well.
Thoughts: Ooof this fic. This was a vent fic. I made it after some stuff happened, mostly cause I relate super hard to Dick's relationship with Damian. Tbh this is just a self indulgent wish fulfilment piece of crap, but hey, that's what fics are for, aren't they?! It's actually super embarrassing to think this was my first DC fic, because, again, self indulgent trash. I'm honestly never ever ever gonna recommend anyone to read it, it's, well, embarrassing!!! I hope no one who knows me in real life ever touches it, they would immediately know which situation made me write it and I would just combust with embarrassment on the spot. Ugh. I've thought about orphaning it because, again, super personal and super embarrassing!!! But it's also kind of close to my heart? So I don't think I could just throw it away ever.
Night Habits:
Summary: Damian has a nightmare and goes to Dick's room to feel better. It's not the same as before. (Talon!Dick Grayson series)
Thoughts: This is another fic that was surprisingly popular!! I was thinking of writing a talon!dick story for a while now, and one day I just sit and wrote this. Again, Dick and Damian's relationship is SO precious to me, so of fucking course I did it about that. To be honest I feel this story is lacking because it lacks any context whatsoever, it's a problem I've noticed with all that series, it's just cute or sad moments without much context. But then again, it's fanfiction, and I learned a while ago to stop worrying whether something I post is good or not. Personal enjoyment > Quality.
Grappling Hook:
Summary: Little Dick Grayson goes missing soon after he moved to the manor. Bruce finds him sleeping in the cave as a grappling hook. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: Oh man. Listen, one day I just thought ā€œHey, I wanna see a soul eater AU of the batfam.ā€ Then I looked and lookedā€¦ And there wasn't any!! Can you believe it?! So I started to think of my own, not really knowing if it would be a comic or an ask blog or a fanfic.Ā
Soon it became more of a soul-eater-inspired thing than something actually related to soul eater, because honestly the only thing I really wanted was an au where everything was the same except people turned into objects. I shared the idea with a friend and we started to brainstorm worldbuilding and headcanons. One of those headcanons was that one day Dick just sorta disappeared and Bruce found him as an object sleeping somewhere. I'm not sure why I wrote this first? But I guess I had to start the series somehow and people liked it. So, yay.
Bo Staff:
Summary: Tim turns into an object for the first time. And then accidentally gets locked in a closet. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: My fingers puked this fic THE MOMENT I finished Grappling Hook. Listen, at that point I had been around 6 months without classes and bored out of my mind so, can you blame me? A ton of the following fics also happened DAYS after these, so, yeah, I guess I just really needed something to do, the following weeks were just insanely productive for me.
I like the contrast this fic creates with Dick's. Overall, I think it's ok. I'm not sure if I want to subscribe to the portrayal of Tim's parents here? I like the idea that they care but just are too absorbed on their work to actually notice the kid exists, but I think here they came off as downright hateful. Oh well, I can blame it to it being from Tim's POV I guess. Unreliable narrator and what not. I also think I didn't make it as angsty as I wanted it to be, but most people said it was still pretty sad, so, I guess that's ok.
How (not) to cope when your brother is turned into a zombie that might or might not still be him:
Summary: Tim realizes he's (just maybe) been fucking up a little bit. (Talon!Dick Grayson series)
Thoughts: Oh, this thing. I liked how this thing turned out! I don't 100% like my portray of Talon!Dick on this series. I wanted to make it kind of like Rei in the evangelion movies after she becomes an empty doll, but, like, not so drastic? But idk man, I just have seen way more interesting portrayals of Talon!Dick before so maybe that's why I feel like it's lacking.Ā
I really enjoyed writing this one fic tho, there are some scenes I really enjoyed writing in here, like when Tim got kicked out of his team for an university project hahaha. Also this was my first time writing a nightmare and it made me realize my deep love for writing dream sequences. Since then I'm trying to restrain myself from adding a dream to every single one of my stories, since I feel it's more powerful with moderation, but believe me when I say the tentation is thereā€¦. Hm. Maybe I could write something that's nothing but compilations of characters dreams???? Sure would be a cool character exploration exercise. Hm. Hmmmmmmā€¦ I might just have had an ideaā€¦.
Training:
Summary: Jason asks Dick to help him training on being a shifter. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: This was a fun thing to write!!! I wasn't sure about writing young Jason, but it turned out alright, and overall I just had fun making this!!! I think I portrayed Dick and Jason's relationship well enough, maybe a bit more friendly than they were at the time, but fuck it, I liked this story.
Changzhou Comb:
Summary: Cassandra has a hard time forgetting old habits. (Shifters AU series)Ā
Thoughts: Oh man. This thing. This thing. Listen I didn't know Cass that well before writing this, I knew some about her and her backstory, but I wasn't really that interested in the character. However, I got this thing that makes me want to portray characters that aren't mine really well, so, naturally, I read every single one of her issues as Batgirl as preparation. Twice.
And. I. Loved it. I loved it so much!!! I loved her so SO much!!! She was such an amazing, endearing, interesting character!!!! Then I finally sit down, and started the story. And let me tell you I was SUPER worried this would turn out mediocre, I wanted to portray the character well but didn't think I could. But then, then something, I don't know what, but something possessed me and I justā€¦ Began writing. And it turned out amazing. This is one of my best fics to date. I'm super proud of this one and it's a shame it's the least popular story of this series.
Grandfather's Collection:
Summary: A funny cute little story from Damian's childhood: The first time he pets a cat! (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: This fic was fun to write! It allowed me to show some stuff I wanted to show and it's always a treat to use an unreliable narrator. Also Damian as a tiny little kid excited because of a cat is a treasure. I guess I wish this had been a bit creepier??? But then again, it's hard to make anything truly creepy when your narrator is a tiny kid who's having the best day of his life.
Revolver:
Summary: Some time after coming back to life Jason discovers something's changed. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: I got conflicted feelings about this one. On one hand, I like how the narrator for Jason turned out, and I think the story is fine, it just feelsā€¦ Idk, contrived? It does depart from canon by a lot (I'm sorry but I just love aus where Jason stays with Talia and Rah's for some time) and I worry Rah's motivations come off as, you know, kinda shallow??? He feels like a Disney villain. And I honestly like writing him like a Disney villain???? I know he's complex in canon and stuff butā€¦ Idk, I kind of really enjoy writing him as the embodiment of evil who can decide if you live or die in a whim, so I will probably keep writing him like that, even if it's ooc.
Engraving:
Summary: Tim asks Jason if he knows a good tattoo parlor. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: This one was fun!!! This was a bit of worldbuilding I wanted to show since I first invented this AU, and I think it turned out alright. I'm satisfied with Jason and Tim's interactions. I think including the conversations with Kon and Bart at the end was kind of forced maybe??? But fuck it!! It's fic!!! Personal enjoyment > Quality!
Sleepover:
Summary: Damian has a nightmare. Set during Dick's time as Batman. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: Hellooo again my love for writing weird ass dreams!! This fic was fun, and I like how it ended. From Damian's nightmare to Dick comforting him, it was nice. Just, a nice fic overall. I donā€™t have much else to add, just. I liked it, I had fun. I really like this one.
Tantrum:
Summary: Jason refuses to shift back, Bruce is out of his depth. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: Honestly this is bad. Just, a bad fic. I really wanted to write something with this general plot, but I don't know if I just wasn't inspired or what but at some point I just went ā€œYa know what, fuck it.ā€ And rushed it, just, getting out of the way the list of things I wanted to include. Which is a shame cause the basic premise was good!!! I think I might rewrite it someday, I would like to actually write something good out of that plot. Hm.
Let's dance in my borrowed shoes tonight:
Summary: Dick is missing. Someone has to cover for him. (Talon!Dick Grayson series)
Thoughts: Another Cass fic, another idea I wasn't sure I could live up to, another amazing fic that turned out better than expected. I don't know why but Cass just awakens some poetic part of me I guess. It's funny, the more I write her, the more she starts to turn into my favorite character.
I like this one, a lot. Cass as Nightwing is super super cool, and I like how awkward and insecure she is with the whole thing. I really liked the whole watercolor thing too. I was practicing how to use watercolors around the time I wrote this, so you can bet that line came directly from that. I liked to describe the city as painting, I think it suits it. I just. Liked that part a lot.
Also you get a random girl trying to kiss Cass, so whatā€™s not to love?!
Hight morning last minute visit:
Summary: Jason visits someone he hasn't seen in a while. (Talon!Dick Grayson series)
Thoughts: I had this idea for a while now, almost since the beginning of the series, a friend gave it to me and I wanted to write it but I wasn't sure how. I think this turned out alright, I liked my portrayal of Talon!Dick in this one for a change, and I really really liked adding that part where Jason admits he didn't actually kill anyone and tells the story of the kid.
Also, I had this idea for the happy birthday, and I even told my friend ā€œI'm gonna end it in happy birthday Dick and it's gonna be super sadā€ and she was like ā€œuhhhā€¦ Ok?ā€ And I made sure the last line was a gut punch, and based on the reaction of everyone in the comments I succeeded!!!! It was important for me that the last line turned up the sad a lot, it was the whole point of the fic, so I'm glad I could make it work!!!!!
And by the way, the title isnā€™t a typo. I know how to write ā€œhighā€.Ā
Training II: Teacher's teacher
Summary: Someone had to teach Dick how to be good at shifting before he was actually good at it. (Shifters AU series)
Thoughts: Oh man, this whole thing was basically just an info dump disguised as fluff. I needed to add some worldbuilding before moving to some stuff in this series so I used this to get it out of the way, I really hope it wasn't too confusing!!!
In general I liked this fic, I had a ton of fun writing it! I had this idea of Lois being an absolute beast in this AU and I'm happy I could finally show it off, even if I kind of feel she's a tiny itty bit out of character.
Also, there are tons of fics exploring Dick's relationship with Clark, but not so much with Lois. I wanted to make them closer in this AU than in canon and I like how their relationship was portrayed hereā€¦. Lois is just a ton of fun.
I also really like how when Lois talks about being a shifter her speech is exactly the opposite of what Dick tells Jason, just a fun detail that shows everything the characters say is just their perspective and everyone got a different opinion on how they see being a shifter, no oneā€™s 100% right.
This was the last fic of 2018 and you got no fucking idea how hard it was to have it ready in time. I almost didn't include the last part because of lack of time, but!! At the end I was able to add everything I wanted to!!! And publish it in time!!!
Special fic
Syntax error.
Listen. Listen. This. This is a special one, that's why I'm talking about this apart from the others. Why is this fic a special one you ask? Oh, I don't know, maybe because I've bEEN WORKING AROUND EIGHT MONTHS ON THIS SHIT BEFORE EVEN PUBLISHING IT?!
Listen. Just. Just listen. I spent way too much time just plotting this story. Way too long. I spent hours just ranting about this to my friends. I made a fucking playlist for this thing. I spent days just figuring out what the chapters will be named. I spent HOURS. DAYS. Researching each character to write them properly, there are chapters I've written like four times for this shit.
Now, is this perfect? Hell no. Specially the first chapters are unpolished as hell and you know you're gonna find typos because I always miss at least one. But as far as I'm concerned this is the only thing I'm actually putting effort into. All the other fics? All the other fics and series I've talked about? Those are just projects to pass the time. Stuff I do when I'm bored. I love them, sure, but it's not like it took more than three hours to write any of them. They're fun stuff, they're entertainment, they're something to pass the time. I will write them between classes or when I'm bored and open drive in my phone and write them without much planning or care. They're just that. Fun
But this thing? This thing right here? Syntax error? That's my baby. That's my goddamn main project. This thing right here already stole hours of my goddamn life and it will only keep stealing more. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
I honestly don't give a fuck how many people read this one, I'm past the point of caring. I have and will keep pouring tears, sweat and blood into this shit. This is something I actually care about. This. This is such a personal project guysā€¦. Iā€¦. Loveā€¦ This oneā€¦
So that's the retrospective of fics published on 2018!!!!
Man, that was fun, let's just hope 2019 is also a fun, productive year!!!!!
