Yknow what? Not done talking about Valka. I think she and Hiccup are kindred spirits, they share the same 'soul of a dragon', out of place among the vikings of Berk.

We don't know a lot about Valka canonically since she was just reduced to 'mom' a bit after her introduction, but I'd like to think Hiccup's wanderlust is also something he inherited from her.

They're both passionate and meant to explore the world to better understand it, they value their freedom in the sky and would be miserable tied down. I feel like as much as she loves Hiccup and Stoick, and as bad as she feels for staying away, she's guilty but not remorseful. She's selfish and it's painfully humanizing.
