People who ship Merlin/Mordred (18 and 10yrs old when they met), you need to develop the ability to see dynamics between humans outside of a romantic context, because that shit is disgusting. I don’t care if he “waits until he’s 18” or something. If you think this has no relation to real life, you are lying to yourself.

People who ship incest… get real, it’s 2024. This includes half-siblings, step-family, adoptees, etc. because they ARE relatives. Yes, I have seen ppl in this fanbase say it’s ok to ship adoptees because they’re not “real family” — specifically using Thor/Loki as an example (in the replies of a post about Merlin & Mordred having a “brotherly” relationship, no less). Those of you still shipping Arthur/Morgana and Morgana/Morgause… A ship being gay doesn’t magically make it progressive. Abuse is not progressive, it is a result of one person’s sense of entitlement in conflict with another person’s autonomy.

Racism and misogyny — particularly this fandom’s misogynoir towards Gwen. Common sense, except many of you will read this and think it doesn’t apply to you when it does.

If you think that Arthur is incapable of loving Gwen as much as he loves Merlin (despite the opposite being true in canon), if you call Gwen “a beard” or act as if Arthur broke centuries of tradition to marry a servant out of “convenience” or to use her for her womb — why do you want Arthur to objectify this woman so bad?

If you think that Merlin would’ve needed to teach Gwen, Lancelot, or Elyan how to write despite the fact that Gwen and Elyan were co-running a small business with their father for years + the season 1 photoshoots of Gwen writing + s5 Gwen writing onscreen + the fact that Lancelot and Merlin were writing each other for years — we get it, you watched Holes.

Villainizing Gwen and/or Elyan (e.g. the Kingdom Come fan script). Gwen accepts Merlin’s magic with a grace that Arthur doesn’t offer in the same episode, but fans often interpret Arthur’s reaction with good faith and ignore Gwen’s entirely. She and Elyan both suffered the wrongful death of their father when Uther accused him of consorting with a sorcerer and didn’t give him a trial. Elyan saw/experienced firsthand the wrongful persecution of the Druids when he was possessed by the spirit of a Druid child, so fics where he is disproportionately aggressive towards magic while Leon and Arthur are disproportionately calm are especially transparent (e.g. that Arcane Dominion fic on Ao3).

If you think that whole Helios arc (especially with Gwen’s outfit) or all the “Southrons” shit in the show wasn’t racist (or, if you don’t know, please look up what orientalism is and how it affects people irl).

Homophobia - a lot of merthur shippers (and others, but one’s kinda more popular) have a lot of homophobic beliefs. For example, if you think that sub = bottom and dom = top, that is both misogynistic and homophobic. If you think that Merlin or Arthur (or, like, Gwaine) is “weaker” than the other and decide their position as dom/top or sub/bottom based upon that criteria, again you are being misogynistic and homophobic. This goes double for presenting Merlin as a dom/top because of his magic (not in general), when it’s pretty clear in the show that magic peoples are experiencing a genocide because they are stereotyped as dangerous. Hmm, I wonder what groups this logic might apply to in real life who are demonized and hypersexualized to justify their eradication… not gay and trans people, or poc, or other oppressed groups! They could never have anything in common with a hypothetical oppressed group !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Transphobia - fics going on about how “[x gender] could never [perform y reproductive function]” is obviously something you say when you forget or ignore that trans ppl exist. Doesn’t matter if you’re making fun of mpreg or whatever, and no it’s not just merthur fics.

Religious persecution - first of all, if you generalize any persecuted religious group/culture or decide that genocide is justifiable towards some people, you are either a Nazi, a Zionist, or some other white supremacist, and you are not welcome here.

Now, this touches on homophobia, misogyny, and transphobia, too, but because magic is ultimately a stand-in for religious persecution, it goes here:

When you villainize Merlin for keeping his identity a secret in a society where he is, in written law, to be executed for the way he was born, you’re sending a horrific message to people who should never feel guilty for the most bare minimum acts of survival. Fiction is informed by reality, and may support certain societal aspects/ideas in return. Stories are a form of speech, which is cycled through the sociopolitical atmosphere of the storytellers. You are not immune to propaganda, but you are especially susceptible if you refuse to acknowledge that even allegories exist.

I'm not the fact checker anon but I did check this fact and it is categorically wrong.

I went throufgh the entire Zukka and anti Zukka/anti zukka shipper tags neither tag had much content so either there are just nit a lot of confessions about them (which honestly makes sense) or they previously weren't properly tagged (no shade to mod ). there was one ask that referenced another ask but I could not find it so either it was deleted or tumblr search if fucked and both are possible so just keep in mind that there might be more.

But from what I found most pro-zukka posts weren't even about zukka, zukka was just one ship listed among other rare pair/lgbtq ships or alternative fire sibling water sibling ships

there were maybe 3 posts that explicitly was about Zukka saying that Zutara/ the shipping war was ridiculous and people should hope sides.

the rest were headcannons or responses to previous takes on Zukka.

Now for the anti zukka shippers/ anti zukka tags

if something was anti zukka it was also tagged anti zukka shippers except for one ask that was about the characterization of zukka within the ship but had no problem with the ship itself.

One person admitted they just didn't like zukka no reason given

Majority of the posts were about how Zukka stans are all fujoshis who only like the ship because it's gay/yaoi (a lot of pro zukka posts are in response to this)

Atleast 40% of the posts were people complaining about Zukka shippers attitudes towards Zutara (very little evidence of that attitude on this blog but then again this is a vent blog I'm sure it's probably happening fandom tends to bring out the worst in people) but yeah within that about half of it was people saying that calling Zutara a colonizer x colonized but shipping zukka is hypocritical (which true)and that their reasons for why it's not are flimsy. And the other half is saying that Zukka became famous of the back of Zutara or they got popular by purposely antagonizing zutara and saying they are the true solution to the ship war which no (if anything it would be zukaang because Katara's interest is the polarizing topic or some version fo zuko/aang/katara but realistically none of these ships would stop the ship war because that is not what the ship wars is about)

The rest of it is calling Zukka repurposed klance and comparing about the toxicity thepandemic boom brought to the fandom.

what got you into selfshipping?

well... i guess just escapism? i was always a really imaginative kid. i loved warriors and percy jackson and etc. i had warrior cats ocs. i made ocs to put into percy jackson bc i wanted to be there so bad. although the one that got me into selfshipping in a SERIOUS capacity was Xenon from Cytus II. i was so head over heels for this man. it was also 2020 so i was incredibly lonely. like "playing heartbeat sounds on my phone and putting it under my pillow" type of lonely. back then i gave everything that i wished and yearned for to my s/i, aggie. she had a loving partner, great close friends, and was a successful professional dancer. i've discussed this on my blog (tag #meta) before, but nowadays i see selfship in a different way. instead of "i want this to happen to mee" it's just like "would that be fucked up or what"

you know this really depends because they're all sort of.... different? the example i always cite is adelheidis because adelheidis is a gay white man. i am a chinese lesbian. how does this even happen. i suppose they're all idealized because they're generally better at things than i am--like adel is a better dancer than me, vesper is a world-class duelist. but there's also like, cainabeth who sort of isn't an idealized version OR just me. she mirrors me in many respects though.

I need to get my soapbox out for this one. I can’t not agree with you more on the twinklaren and mctwinks terms. It just gets my knickers in a twist for multiple reasons. 

1) twink is historically meant to be a thin, white, young gay man.

A)While neither driver has declared their sexuality publicly, Oscar is in a straight relationship with a women, and it doesn’t feel right to use a gay term to refer to him. Lando has dated at least one woman in the past and has never said anything different. I really don’t like using a term for a gay man for Lando since there is so much open speculation about his sexuality and using the term seems like a presumption on our part. If he is something other than straight, he can make it public or not in his own time.

B) Using a term that refers to the body shape of anyone male/female/other doesn’t feel great either. Especially since they are not the stereotypical thinness of a twink. They are incredibly fit muscular young men who spend a lot of time and effort on their physical fitness for their jobs. I don’t think we should be referring to their body shapes in general but especially not calling them them as thin/waifish as that promotes a muscular body standard for men who have a thinner body type that is difficult to obtain.

2)I know shipping them is popular, but the use of twink makes certain assumptions about their sexuality and is strong on the shipping side of things. I personally feel that shipping should stay in rpf and certain online communities and not in spaces they can see. When I see these terms used in instagram or twitter under the official McLaren accounts it feels icky. The whole Oscar heart eyes thing under Mclarens instagram account is out of control.

3)I am a straight female. Using a term that is from the gay community and that I don’t know the deep history and meaning up just feels icky as well. I would never go up to one of my gay friends and say “oh you are such a twink” so why would I think it’s okay to use it online?

My suggestion for a change. I think we can still keep the whole fun word play, but just change it a bit. Turn it into McTwins and TwinClaren. They do have similar features and similar mannerism. The twinning is cute, and doesn’t have any underlying commentary on their sexuality or body types. It’s almost more brotherly, the idea of twin brothers. It would take a lot of the ick out of it for me.

Among all the points you listed here, I never go into comment sections because it's always a hellhole, but seeing you say people comment twink- and heart-eyed-related things makes me want to die. People (both fandom and admins at this point) lose boundaries more and more every day.

I personally don't ship Lando and Oscar (though that's not news), nor do I think they really even look like each other apart from both being young white guys with dark hair, but a change in how people refer to them as a pair would be welcome in my eyes. I will personally keep tagging their joint things with "sibling behavior" because you're right, their relationship is very brotherly in my eyes.

What are some "problematic" ships you like?

do you really want to know because I have some really problematic ships? If so I'll tell you. A lot of them have age differences. Sometimes big ones. A lot of them are with evil people. And a lot of them aren't straight. And lot of them are just plain, well taboo. This will probably be long so stop reading if you don't want to read an essay.

My problematic ships:

Roy Mustang x Edward Elric Fullmetal Alchemist: ok really problematic straight out of the gate. Not only because of age difference but also because Roy Mustang is technically Ed's boss/superior officer in the military. Not that Ed fully listens to everything Roy says. And Roy constantly teases him about it. Roy is also snake but someone trying to change things for the better. He's also has done a lot of bad things. But so has Ed. They are both to messed up people trying to fix things they've done wrong and they are both intimately aware of that about each other. They both are incredibly brilliant and have in common the type of powers they use. You need to watch Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 to understand(not brotherhood. 2003 first) they are not canon but the canon ships bore me and lack any real romance so there you go.

Luz Noceda x Philip Wittebane: I know I know! This one is really fucked up. So fucked up. And Lunter is my otp. Believe me I know. But I have a dark fascination for this ship. Especially considering every interaction Luz and Philip had. And how much they have in common.. Like this my go to ship for when I want angst and trauma and just to see a dumpster fire. When I want Luz angst. I love Lunter. If Lunter is my happy ending, this ship is if I want tragedy and bad endings. This my depression ship!

Zuko x Happiness avatar the last airbender(anyone who is not Mai because she honestly sucked.) I am not a Mai fan. She is a horrible written character to me personally. And just horrible for Zuko. I mostly love any Zuko ship that has a water tribe sibling in it. But now a days that seems too toxic for people. You can look up the reasons in the anti zutara, anti zukka, anti zuko tag. But Zuko is my favorite character. Anything that gives him happiness makes me happy. Over all this mostly seems toxic because of Zukos past and family. But he had a redemption arc. One of the best. He deserves some happiness as he works hard to change things as fire lord.

Lunter/Luz x Hunter: You understand this needs no explanation. You know the owl house Fandom.

Dipper x Bill gravity falls: Yeah this one is really really bad. I think I have a really messed up taste for romance. Especially where age difference comes into play? Maybe I'm a masochist? Who knows. But I have a soft spot for adhd/autistic characters with older/immortal people. I have a soft spot for immortals/dangerous people protecting said autistic/adhd people.

Bakudeku my hero academia : I have a soft spot for redeemed bullies who actually put in the work to change. One of my favorite movies was a walk to remember.

my grandparents have recently both passed away and my dad is currently remodeling their house with the intention of selling it. they lived countries and continents away so I didn't get around to visiting them all that often but from the times that I did, I remember that house and I remember that they lived there. I asked my brother, who is much older than me and spent a lot more time growing up in the house, if he is sad that the house is being changed and we may never go in it again. He hasn't been able to visit at all in the past years even though he constantly wishes he could so I thought he would be sad. But it surprised me when he said that he doesn't mind about the house, he plans to visit the graves. I realized that I did not think that way. Because to me, their memory, their soul, isn't with a rock I've never seen before. It's in my memories, in the house. It's when my grandma helped me wash and hang my laundry to dry from the apartment window, its where my grandpa would joke around and tell me he can summon rain by singing when we were walking through the hallway. Revisiting these memories, seeing the worn out wood floors, the sun bleached rugs, the china collections, and the old old tv, that would be more impactful for me in remembering them.

But all of this is different for my dad. To him, he's getting peace and closure with clearing out the house. He didn't have the best relationships with his parents, so changing the house and getting rid of it is his way of lifting the past traumas off his shoulders. In a way it was exactly the same for me here. Since my dad has been gone for years to take care of my grandparents and now fix the house, us here, my siblings and I, have been remodeling my dad's house with the intention of renting it while he's gone. This house was where I grew up. Played with my toys running all around, stuck glow in the dark stars and paper moons on my walls, etched my height into the door frame. But also, this is the house where I'd drop everything I was doing and freeze to try to hear why my parents were yelling. This was the house where the dinners would be tense. This is the house where I was lectured that I shouldn't listen to pop music. This is the house where I began to be obsessively germaphobic, because that's what my dad was. But also, this is the house I lived in when I had the most friends, the entire street were mostly kids my age and we would all play, go to the park and play lava tag, play in the mountain wilds, turn our front yards into potion shops and super hero hangouts. This was the house I bravely learned to lose my baby teeth. The house where my mom would teach me to cook and sew. But also, this was the house where my dad was always by his computer, typing away at his book or arguing with someone online about politics. The house I was homeschooled in cause real school didn't work for me. My mom tried her best but I was difficult and I would cry and yell because I just couldn't understand math. This was the house I loved and hated and would never want to live in again. So of course I wanted it remodeled, I wanted that white-ish yellow walls my dad painted when we first moved in to be gone. The beige matted carpets that never got vacuumed after me and my mom moved out completely ripped out. The lights changed, the countertops, the banisters, the front door. Change everything, replace Theseus's ship one plank at a time. We threw out old things and shoved all my dad's stuff in a storage unit. Now there are new people living there. But with so much stuff changed, I realized the memories still remained. The house looks different on the inside but the layout is still the same, the kitchen where my dad jokingly said he'd kill me if I was gay is still there, the bedroom I cried in and couldn't sleep cause I anxious about something or another. The outside is the exact same. The backyard where my dad planted trees we took care of cause he'd leave. My friends houses are still there even though every single one of them has moved away. You can change the ship's planks all you want, making it technically a different ship, but in Theseus's mind, it will always be the same ship.

Not sure what the intention of this post was. Supposed I wanted to draw parallels and underline history repeating itself in my family. Maybe for the first time in many years I am starting to understand my dad and not really hate him in my angsty teenage way. Everyone has their unique upbringing causing a butterfly affect for the rest of their lives and affecting their children. he was raised in the soviet union, his country experienced famines, money in banks was lost, he did everything he could to get his family out of there, they moved around until getting a scholarship into an American college and being able to comfortably move his family to the US and then I was born. I understand the stress he lived through, I understand that there are some things I don't understand. I understand that I won't ever forgive him for some of the things I grew up with. But I also understand that he loves me, he doesn't know how to love me, cause his love can be stressful and suffocating sometimes, but he loves me. And I am making my peace with that, I am moving on. Because even if you don't agree with someone, they have a negative effect on your mental health, and you wished they raised you better, they still deserve to be understood.

What made you ship it? —Listen. Listen. Listen. I had stirrings probably as early as BJ swinging Margaret down from the jeep in Margaret's Engagement. But the real dynamite exploded inside of me in Eye for a Tooth, when BJ and Margaret and Hawkeye are pulling their ruse on Charles. I had already picked up on the story beats well enough to know going into that climactic scene that the three of them had a ruse going, so I wasn't afraid of whatever was about to happen on my screen. THIS DID NOT MEAN I WAS PREPARED FOR BJ TO WRESTLE MARGARET DOWN ONTO A COT. I tell this story a lot, but truly I had to go in the kitchen and stand there and stare at the wall for 5 minutes as I processed everything, this constant repeating chant of "Did I hurt you, Margaret?" "Not at all, I LOVED it!" It was so fucking much. The trust it took to be that physical with one another, the way they held hands from the moment BJ got off of her, the just sheer! Physicality! Of it all! My god! I was a goner. From that moment on, I started noticing every side moment of BJ getting snippy over her love interests, of how often they will find and support each other—the hand thing, the FUCKING hand thing, WHY do they hold HANDS so much!!!!!—and how frequently they will watch each other when the other isn't looking, and it was just an endless line of dominos. They want to fuck each other's brains out. This is just a fact of life.

What are your favorite things about the ship? —I love the messiness of Margaret being a blonde woman named Margaret and what that must do to BJ's brain in those early weeks of being there. I love that Margaret lets BJ get away with saying filthy things to her that she would never let Hawk get away with. I love how they clearly find each other extremely safe—they would never act on this craving! They get so so smug when they say goodbye and they haven't done a damn thing! They survived cheating! (and then postwar—) I love that as they evolve, Margaret is not afraid to take him to task when he fucks up, and I love that BJ is so protective of her in so many circumstances. I love the doors they open for each other for genderfuckery on both sides and I love that all of BJ's latent misogyny is right there for Margaret to blast holes through like a wrecking ball just by the very nature of who she is as a high-ranking hard-working woman. And as I always say, their ship doesn't work for me unless they're best friends underneath it all. Their friendship is vital. It's just a complicated one given the nature of the Everything about them.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? —The fact that I ship them at all is the unpopular opinion hkdffds I don't see BJ as a gay man, I don't see Margaret as a lesbian, and I don't see them as only friends who are not attracted to each other/sibling-coded. Obviously I respect everyone who sees them in such ways and I completely understand why they do. But to me, they have incredibly electric moments, and the cracking tension of them knowing they can't, they really can't, absolutely gets my brain running far far too fast and too hot. I will be sailing their very tiny canoe and continuing to dominate their ship tag for the rest of time.

Jazlyn and Ewan usually go as a famous couple (yes, even before they dated)

Gabriel never tries and goes sarcastically as "a teenager" or "a high schooler in a sheet" etc

Liam always goes as something clever, but easy to put together (e.g., a stick figure)

Kelsey and Tyler both do something classic like a zombie, vampire, etc.

I wanted to like idk rant to someone in the HB fandom who isn’t balls deep in the “anti proship” sphere bc like, I’ve been struggling w guilt over enjoying a certain ship that everyone hates and considers problematic (I think Loona and Octavia is rlly cute!) and I’d like to make content for it but I also rlly fear being seen as like a pedophile. Do u ever worry abt that kind of thing? And is there anyway ur able to get over it if u do? I don’t like getting into anti/anti anti discourse bc I feel like it’s a very reductive way to view and interpret media but I still have a crazy amount of worry/guilt

First off, it is still ridiculous to me that this is even a problem in this fandom. This is an adult show about characters in Hell, and the main characters are, respectively, assassins and the eclectic cast of the Hotel which includes a cannibal serial killer. (I am eternally both amused and completely baffled that like half the awful puritanical takes I see are from Val icons. Buddy. Pal. The fucked up fiction is coming from inside the house.) I saw waaaaay more fucked up shit on Zim nsfw twitter than I see on Hellaverse twitter and that show was Y7. Up your game, guys.

Personally, I don't really see Loona and Via as siblings/sisters as much as I think a lot of others do, more just friends (and honestly I think canon moved much too quickly to give them such a heartfelt scene together, they hadn't even met officially before that point?) so it's really only the age thing and even then, the plot of HB has seemed to imply that a fair amount of time has passed since the series started, probably around a year- so Via would be 18 or older by the time anything actually started anyway, especially if they became friends first. Setting aside the 'justification' though... they're not real. They're cute together, I agree, and I think you should be perfectly fine enjoying them just in the lens of 'they're similar, I like how they'd interact, and I think they're cute together'!

I was pretty much forged in my opinions about this from Invader Zim stuff, where people insisted that liking two characters that I'd liked together since I was thirteen made you a pedophile. Obviously, I could tell that wasn't true, because it had never been the case in all those years up to people starting to be bitchy about it in 2019. (Before that, it was that it was bad because it was enemies to lovers and, more importantly, gay. Great hater throne to inherit, guys!)

Unfortunately... as stupid as it is, this fandom is way more puritanical than it should be, so it wouldn't be wrong to engage through anonymity to protect yourself. Find the people in the tag who are using 'proship/proship interact' or something along those lines (I've seen a few, although some tend to lean more on hard/dead dove content), post on ao3 into the anonymous collection which removes your name, make a tumblr sideblog that doesn't connect to your main, find fellow shippers and interact with them specifically. Do whatever you need to do to keep yourself safe from people who can't understand that thinking something is cute or interesting to explore in fiction is automatically bad just because they don't like it. The more stuff that's put out there about the ship, the more likely you are to find kindred spirits, that's honestly part of how I gathered my mpreg weirdos to me in both this fandom and the last.

I'm pretty sure that the callout I got for Sunny was why several mutuals who were a friend group unfollowed (and likely muted) me on twitter. Unfortunately, it left me worrying that the other shoe was going to drop any day for about a week because it got just enough notes to make me worry but not enough to get to anyone with any real reach to spread and get it 'over with'.

At this point, I've sort of reached a state of 'fuck it', because if it happens, it happens. I know that I'm fine, and the people I genuinely care about know that too. I know that what I'm making is entirely separate from my morals as a person, if not from how dumb the IZ stuff was than from the fact that I was an English major. Literature is full of stuff that authors don't make as a 1:1 with their real-life morals! And the one you're thinking about isn't 'bad' comparatively at all.

I think the fandom is starting to see that being a dick about fictional content is bad through the backlash to Poison and 'hey, maybe telling somebody that they need to detail their trauma to the public to make fiction is bad?', but it seems to mostly be centered on dub/noncon, so I wouldn't necessarily hold my breath.

At the end of the day though, remember this: You, as a person, are completely fine, no matter what others might think. Octavia and Loona would probably be seen as a totally normal ship like ten years ago (except for people who'd be dicks about them being gay) and there is no judgement to be made on your character in any reasonable way for thinking they're a good ship. You're not a pedophile for thinking a fictional owl and hellhound look cute together, any more than I was for smacking together two Nicktoon characters, and frankly the IZ argument held slightly more water than 'the almost-18-year-old and the 22-year-old' because Zim's age was so ambigious. Try explaining this 'people think the young adult animals holding hands are bad' to any adult who isn't sucked into fandom discourse and they'd probably be baffled that it's a problem.

I know that the guilty feelings aren't always rational and it took a bit of time for me to unwind how I felt about creating certain stuff too, but try to remember that above all else- exploring things in fiction has been a thing people have done for a very, very long time. What matters is your actions towards other real people, not what you do with fictional dolls.
